"Poll question: So Now Rondo's Better than Chris Paul?"

I saw this in the Steve Nash post and this deserved it's own...to me there's no way in hell that Rondo is seeing CP3. Someone brought up his playoff performance (especially yesterday), and although he has balled, let's not forget about CP3 and his accomplishments as well

Soon as a dude gets hurt he gets written off

and I don't think we will likely see CP3 playing with comparable talent until late in his career unless the Hornets start salary dumping (but with the new owner, I doubt that's happening).

I don't understand how you guys spend so much time comparing the one position that is most reliant (statistically) on their supporting cast.

that was quick.

Not saying CP3 is Ledelle Eackles but trying to front like Rondo ain't speed farting in dudes faces is just ridiculous.

You gonna follow with, "Rondo has 3 HOF'ers".

Me - Rondo has a Ring.

You - CP3 has no one to play with.

Me - David West is somebody. As is Okafor and Collison.

You - CP3 was hurt

Me - I don't giveth a fuck. Stay healthy. Hit the weights. Stop being hurt all the damn time.

You - CP3 is gonna show muthafuckaz next year.

Me - I'll be here next season as well. Rondo will be on the court too. And he's coming back better like he has every year. Will CP3? Til, then I'll holla.

So a 10.7ppg, 6.8apg player is now farting in the face of a 19.7ppg, 10.0apg player, with worse talent around him...wow

WITH 3 HOF's

LOL...you are now saying that West/Okafor/D.Collision is AS GOOD AS Pierce/Allen/KG...is that what you're really saying?

Ah yes, this is the reason why so many players were/are better than Dwyane Wade

I'm not worried about next year...talk to me when Rondo is the 1st option on the team...we'll see how well he does

And you can use that logic for Rondo against Nash and Deron too...are you willing to say that Rondo is better than the both of them, thus making him the best PG in the league?

I'm not

Well this year he averaged a double double. And lead the league in steals and is All NBA defense first team. But way to play our worst talent card early.

Yeah, cuz that's what I said. But fronting like CP3 is playing with a quadrapalegic all start team is pathetic.

Talk to you then? Why don't we talk now? Obviously this whole FIRST OPTION thing for CP3 isn't working out too well. Because if Rondo was on the Hornets, he'd get the ball to his teammates and make them better. And what's the worst he can do, lead them to NOT the playoffs or a first round exit? Then he'd be CP3's equal. No?

>And you can use that logic for Rondo against Nash and Deron

Rondo is nestled right in between Deron and Nash. There all sitting on a 3-seat couch together wearing Snuggies. Deron being number one has the remote. Rondo being number two is holding the chips. But if Deron gets up to go to the bathroom he's gonna change the channel. Steve Nash is selecting what food they're getting delivered. And CP3 is sitting on the floor with D. Rose and they're not allowed to speak.

Who said that?
You said, David West is somebody, as is Okafor & Collison
I said, CP3's squad is nowhere near as good as Rondo's squad with that big 3...so I'm right

If Rondo was on the Hornets, they'd be at the bottom of the Western Conference. He would NOT get them nowhere near the WCF like CP3 did

First of all, pause
Second of all, Rondo is the #2 PG in the league behind EITHER Nash or Deron, when by the same logic you used he's ahead of CP3? That's crazy. You can't say Rondo is a winner, got his team to the chip, make his teammates better than CP3, yadda yadda yadda, without saying the same shit about Nash and Deron...you can replace CP3 with Deron or Nash and it would be true according to you

So again, you gonna say Rondo's the best PG in the league, based on that logic? Again I say no

Nah man, c'mon, looking at their most comparable casts I would say Paul in 2007 and Rondo in 2008 is a fair comparison. Paul went just as deep and had a better record and did more individually.

I know you love Rondo and will be leading this charge of lunacy pero venga ... CP mejor.

Better shooter, better passer, better scorer, equal penetrator off the dribble, as good if not better off the ball ... Rondo rebounds better and defends better. So does Kidd. He ain't better.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

first of all how is that the "only way" to compare them. AND how the fuck is this a quantitative method?

This is some random arbitrary hypothetical scenario you came up with, and how are we going to determine who will be the better player at the end of their careers, just a straight extrapolation? Isn't that the same as saying who's the best right now?

I'm gonna go ahead and say your method is just about the worst of a dozen other ways to NOT answer the question definitively.

let's stop acting like Pierce, KG and Ray Ray are still elite players this season. Yet, Rondo is finding a way to lead this team deep into the playoffs again. Not saying he's "better" than Cp3, but they're at the very least even right about now, with Rondo probably having a slight edge cause of that ring.

and for ESPN's analysts, six of them picked Boston to win in 7...Miami finished a whopping 3 games behind boston in the regular season and closed the season on a tear, whereas boston went 27-27 since christmas and was particularly bad down the stretch. so no, not many people thought they'd blow out miami like they did.

Averaged a trippled double through 14 games. last year.

His performance yesterday was once of the great playoff tripple doubles of all time, and that is not an exaggeration.

and say what you want about his supporting cast, but at this point pierce hasn't done anything, and Ray and KG are no longer truly elite players. There is no doubt that Rondo has carried the team dolo this series.

what sums up rondo is the reporter interviewing him at halftime asking him "do you think you can get into the paint at will?" and quickly answered with just a "yes i do."

Rajon's advantages are his rebounding ability and on the ball defensive ability. He is also the best bounce-passer in the league. My favorite thing about him, however, is how prepared he is for each game.....dude is out there running the game very comfortably and understands everything the opposing team wants to do.

Cats must have forgot how good CP3 is when he's out there....he is just as good, if not better, at getting to the rim, his passing ability is second to none(and imo he is the best transition passer in the league, and esp does an excellent job of finding his trailers), his quickness is second to none, his handles are second to none, his vision is second to none, his understanding of angles is second to none.....and his jumper is leaps and bounds better.

With all that being said.....and taking into consideration, CP3 has never had the type of talent that Rondo has around him(and for anyone trying to negate or downplay this fact, FOH), I would take CP3 for a couple reasons: 1) Rebounding is way down the list of priorities 2) The difference in shooting ability outweighs the difference in on the ball defensive ability.

Just imagine CP3 on that Boston team.....just imagine him being able to play with multiple cats who require defensive attention, multiple cats you can run sets for, multiple more chances for him to be on the break because more stops = more chances to run, AND having to play up on him because of his mid-range J....CMON.

Everything you said is pretty much spot on, but, even if Paul (or, say, Magic in his prime) was on this Celtics team, I don't really see how it would be possible to put up better games than Rondo has had in the playoffs the last two years, though 23 games, basically averaging a triple double, carrying the team on his back, and in this series essentially outplaying the best player in the world...i mean, even if Paul is better, would it be possible to actually play that much better than this? 29-18-13? at least a dozen "oh shit!" plays yesterday, and almost always at least 5 per game? i mean, your assessment is spot on, but i'm just sayin...

Yes, he is.

To all you OKP boards overreacting, did you not see Rondo outplay Rose in last year's epic 7-game series?

And look, 29 18 and 13 is otherworldly. Only Oscar and Wilt ever got to or surpassed those numbers in the playoffs. And they only did that once. And how old is Rondo? 24?! Shhhiii - Better believe LeBron was a witness to Rondo yesterday.

I think Rondo's the best pg in the league because he's far more unique than CP, Deron, Rose. He has CP's drive and Deron's toughness. Did you see Rondo yesterday? Charging directly into LeBron or Shaq like those two are just fodder. How many times have you seen Rondo fall down and you know for a fact he won't get up after 'that one'? I've seen it about four times already this series. Less than two minutes later, Rondo's at the line, slightly wincing and making or missing with about the same accuracy he has on chump fouls. Rondo's insane. Maybe we all need to start to pick up roller skating. Is Rondo in some low-key, Fight Club secrecy roller derby team in the offseason?

Most important part is that he doesn't have to even lead his team in a conventional sense. He doesn't need to do anything KG, Pierce or Ray could and he's respectful of that. Could CP step aside like that? Don't know. Look at where CP was drafted and where Rondo was drafted. Who had something to prove? The better draft pick, always. Keeping that high contract depends on it.

Plus, you gotta love Rondo's intense modesty. Spewing cliches in a monotone voice. That postgame interview explaining his performance was classic. Paraphrased from giggling memory: "Just aggressive and drove to the lane. Hit the glass for the boards. As far as the assists, that's just guys making shots." Such a hilarious rebuttal to LeBron's arrogance.

These debates are pointless. It's simply been a long time since I had so much fun watching a player play the game as I did yesterday. Rondo jumped out of some 80s time machine and gave us a brilliant throwback performance that I will never, ever see from CP.

Yes and that's a major reason why he is better than ROSE, who is worse than PAUL.

>ever got to or surpassed those numbers in the playoffs. And
>they only did that once. And how old is Rondo? 24?! Shhhiii -

He played a great game, we know, now stop your knee from jerking. Guys have had triple doubles in the playoffs before. Rondo could be argued as more of a gamer because we've seen him in more big games. That said, Paul was doing EVERYTHING for NO and has been for a while. Their best scorer, their facilitator, their biggest thief, their best outside shooter, everything. How easy is it to prop one guy up while he's playing well in the playoffs and the other guy's season is over? Compare their regular season work, Paul is clearly superior. He should have been the goddamned league MVP two years ago, he finished second on the arbitrary tiebreak of the final game of the season essentially.

So now he is the best in THE LEAGUE!?! Wow. Everybody gets up after being knocked down, man, if you're that impressed by Rondo I think you owe AI and Spree some retroactive knob slobbing.

You mean he does not need to shoot accurately?

It doesn't matter where either guy was drafted now, that only means shit for your first contract. Both guys are SECURE as STARS now and all that chip-on-shoulder shit should have been deaded the second Rondo got his extension.

>Plus, you gotta love Rondo's intense modesty. Spewing cliches

I hate when players talk in cliches and don't get it twisted Rondo is an assassin with tons of confidence. Oh yeah, Nash better, too, BTW and a better interview.

Uh, don't bet on it, Paul is only 24 and he is a better athlete and more skilled player than Rondo.

I can't clap to this...only because CP3 isn't in the playoffs. But, Rondo seems to transform in the playoffs. Dude is running the Celtics right now. And, its a good thing.

They were 3-7 when he went down the first time. Went 4-4 without him. Then went 18-10 when he returned. Hurt again. Then went 8-17 the next 25 games until he came back for a few games before they shut him down for the season. 21-17 with. 12-19 without.

So, uhhhm, yea. They did.

I have no dog in this fight. Nash and Rondo have been absolutely remarkable in the playoffs thus far, but CP3 has been injured and has a 3rd tier (at BEST) default All Star, a busted ass bigman, an overpaid swingman, and a bunch of nobodies on his roster. The dude is good. Really, REALLY good. It's a toss up between him and Deron, IMO and Deron has been better this year.

rondo lovers are lebron haters these days. if boston beats the cavs, all the lebron haters will have rondo jerseys next week.

that being said he is a sick ass ball player, not just point guard. the man oozes confidence too, that bitch on the sideline asked him if he feels he can get to the paint at will and he replies without hesitation, "i do" lmfao. i would put him above chris paul by a hair just for the defense, toughness and reboundeing he brings. we all know cp3 has a better shot but really, not by much.

If the Celtics had a point guard who could bomb 40% from three as well as take it to the hole would be insane.

If Rajon keeps improving his shot, he could close the gap.

74. "RE: So Now Rondo's Better than Chris Paul?"
In response to Reply # 0
Tue May-11-10 03:10 AM by Mastermind12

It's fucking ridiculous to punish point guards for having talent on their teams. How many point guards win without talent around them? And since when was a lack of talent required in order to determine how great he is? The idea that Rondo isn't as great as Paul (or Rose or anyone else that OKS decides to say is better) because he isn't the first option on offense goes against everything the point guard position stands for. CP3 and Rose are the first options because they have to be. No point guard is meant to be in that situation, and their lack of postseason success proves that point. Chris Paul is a better offensive player, but Rondo is showing right now that he is the better point guard because of what he has done for his team the last two years. Like it or not, Rondo is the best player on that team and has been for the entire season. The fact that he is relied on to run a team with 3 hall of famers (by name only, since neither of them were elite players this season) and do everything he does on the court in order for this team to win says more to me than CP3 being the first option and putting up gaudy numbers that don't mean anything at the end of the season. Sure Paul shoots better from 3 and his jumper is wetter. But what else can he do that Rondo can't do better or at least equally? Rondo is a better defender and rebounder, and there is no drop off when it comes to basketball IQ, court vision, passing, and leadership. Also, they are both impossible to keep out of the paint and are great finishers at the basket.

here are the arguments i am hearing from rondo:
HE GOT A CHIP (deaded by what you said IMO)
HE IN THE PLAYOFFS RIGHT NOW (thank you, captain fucking obviouses)
HE GOT TO THE SECOND ROUND LAST YEAR (Paul did the same thing two years ago ... IN THE WEST)

You look at any *fair* basis for comparison, Paul is easily better.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Like, Magic played with HOFers too, right? is CP3 better than him?

I say it like this: You could put any point guard in the leauge on the Celtics and they wouldn't eclipse the numbers/impact Rondo has had in the playoffs, two years in a row, through 23 games.

my post actually made no assertions one way or the other.

I think it is really hard to compare PGs when one plays with astronomically more talent than the other.

I still think Paul is better. And accomplishments...? Paul was one win away from being league MVP in 2007.

89. "Simmons compares Rondo to Magic, Wilt, Bird, Oscar & Jordan "
In response to Reply # 0
Tue May-11-10 02:58 PM by The Analyst

From Bill Simmons latest column:
Edit: Link - http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/100510&sportCat=nba

To Rajon Rondo, whose series-saving Game 4 against Cleveland (29 points, 18 rebounds, 13 assists, total control over the game) was a pantheon-level Celtics performance and had little in common with anything we've ever seen. Keep in mind …

• Since the 1986-87 season, only eight guards have grabbed 18-plus rebounds in ANY game (regular season or playoffs). Michael Jordan did it three times (once in the playoffs); Jason Kidd did it only once.

• Larry Bird had 69 triple-doubles but never a playoff game that looked quite like a 29-18-13. The closest: 24-17-10 (1981, Chicago), 19-16-13 (1986, Milwaukee), 25-15-11 (1986, Houston), 18-16-11 (1987, Milwaukee) and 24-18-10 (1990, New York).

• Only Oscar Robertson (1962: 32-19-13) and Wilt Chamberlain (1967: 29-36-13) had at least a 29-18-13 in a playoff game before, and in the past 40 years, only LeBron (2007: 27-13-13) and Magic (1986: 29-15-14) had at least a 25-13-13. So, um … yeah.

• If you read my basketball book, you might remember how I created a 42 Club for playoff performers who averaged 42-plus for points, rebounds and assists combined for an entire postseason (12-game minimum). According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Rondo also joined Wilt in the 60 Club for players who submitted a 60 (points, rebounds, plus assists) in one playoff game without scoring 30 points in that game. Wilt did it three times, all in 1967: 29-36-13, 24-32-13 and 16-30-19.

• For the playoffs, Rondo is averaging 17.9 PPG, 11.4 APG, 7.1 RPG and 1.9 steals. According to ESPN ace researcher Alok Pattani, only Magic Johnson ever averaged a 16-11-6-2 in the playoffs, and he did it twice: 1983 (17.9, 12.8, 8.5, 2.3) and 1984 (18.2, 13.5, 6.6, 2.0).

• We just compared Rondo to Magic, Wilt, Bird, Oscar and Jordan … legitimately. Kind of insane when you remember I was writing about him in "Rajon The Late Bloomer" terms just two springs ago. I continue to think we should dump "The Big Three" nickname and just start calling Rondo "The Big One."

You honestly think Rondo's good enough to be the face of the franchise WITHOUT KG/Allen/Pierce, like Chris Paul is?

Its been way more than just one ballin ass game though, I mean, he averaged a triple double through 14 games last year in the playoffs.

but i'm not even necessarily just arguing the rondo/paul point. and ur probably right that rondo can't be the face of the franchise w/o them, but at the same time, they wouldn't be where they are now without him.

And if Kobe played Ray in a game of 1 on 1 to 20. Kobe would win 20 to 0.

but yeah, he's ridiculously extra with it and his NBA takes almost always come off as the work of a knee-jerk neophyte.

His knowledge in non-football sports is limited.

null and void.

That's like someone telling me Tone Loc is on their GOAT MC list. Then, I really can't take them seriously on anything they have to say after that. Credibility is shot.

and all he does is shake that shit off and make the play that seals the game in the most important game of the season. He left his indelible mark on the game when it mattered the most for a second time this series. Don't be mad.
