70. "exactly...."
In response to Reply # 23

1 play doesn't cost anyone a 7 game series....the Cards completely imploded in that game...that call just gave it something tangible..

same thing with Donnie Moore in the Angles Sox Series...the Angles went on to get blown out 2 games after that game..

no 7 game series is won or lost on 1 play.

eat a dick..

especially bitch ass cerefussion and the sorry ass red sox..lol.

So let me explain something to this moron brigade...

For every purpose that matters for Armando Gallaraga...he threw a perfect game tonight...

Will it be in the record books as a perfect game? no... but It will be known forever as the game where an ump blew a call costing him a perfect game..so basiclly...that makes it a perfect game..lol.

to compare this with the Cards and the Royals series back in the 80's is completely foolish..

it's June!!!!!!

it's 1 damn game...not a season....

Armando Gallaraga will get all the acalades as if he threw a perfect game..including leverage on his contract..or value to other teams. Armando Gallaraga needed that as he fell off majorly last year, and this game puts him back in the mix..and probably did wonders for his confidence....dude was a boarderline major leaguer if he fukks this season off...Todays game may have saved that kids career....and it don't matter whether or not

Armando Gallaraga got a shut out victory tonight for his team, and for all purposes pitched a perfect game.

I saw dudes interview just after the game, and the look in that kids eyes ..he was estatic..he realizes what that performance did for his career...when the interviewer told him the ump missed the call...Galaraga was like whatever...

you muthafukkas are completely missing the point in your efforts to come on a board and say some stupid shit......in turn YOU end up looking stupid..

if Galaraga doesn't have a problem with it...why should you..

and wishing death on a person over a baseball game in june again....you look like a gat damn fool...lolol...

It was a bang-bang play....that particular play gets called incorrectly more times than others because if the pitcher doesn't cleanly ..almost stomp on the back...the ump's reaction is to HEAR the runner hit the bag and call the guy safe....

I feel bad for the umpire....those are tough calls to make, now he goes in the history books with the dude that missed the world series call..

but regardless..

THE FUKKIN WORLD SERIES>>>>> a perfect game in june....

no comparison....

across the bag ....or hit the bag in a stabbing motion with his foot going down upon the back to make a noise hitting it.....He is at risk of the ump not making the right call....

a slide motion or any movement of the foot around the back puts a question mark in the back of the umps mind....and when the runner comes across the bag with that hard sound of hitting the bag...subconsiously he's gonna call the guy safe...

you've heard of Tie goes to the runner...

that was an obvious bad call...and it was not a tie..but any question mark of the pitcher around the back is risking a safe call...

He made a spontaneous post on a sports board about a shitty call. Thanks oh voice of reason though for setting us all straight.

no excuse. I could give a damn it's it's a regular season game...the gravity of that game means the ump should be on the ball.

In response to Reply # 0

I mean, this is likely a very naive question, since I don't really follow baseball. But I know in other sports, as long as it doesn't change the outcome of the game, the front office has overturned a bad call before. Could they not do this? I know it'd be a bittersweet way to get the perfect game, but...

It would set a huge precedent that he doesn't want to touch with a ten-foot pole.

Again, it sucks for him, badly. But I don't see any other recourse other than suspending the Ump.

Jim Joyce was utterly distraught when we talked to him. "Biggest call of my career, and I kicked the shit out of it."

In response to Reply # 0

DETROIT (AP)Armando Galarraga(notes) of the Detroit Tigers lost his bid for a perfect game Wednesday night with two outs in the ninth inning on a call that first base umpire Jim Joyce later admitted he blew.

First baseman Miguel Cabrera(notes) cleanly fielded Jason Donalds(notes) grounder to his right and made an accurate throw to Galarraga covering the bag. The ball was there in time, and all of Comerica Park was ready to celebrate the 3-0 win over Cleveland, until Joyce emphatically signaled safe.

The veteran ump regretted it.

I just cost that kid a perfect game, Joyce said. I thought he beat the throw. I was convinced he beat the throw, until I saw the replay.

It was the biggest call of my career, said Joyce, who became a full-time major league umpire in 1989.

Seriously, that shows a lot of character. Umpires generally circle the wagons in a manner so shameless it would make cops blush. He could have gone Doug Eddings and entirely lied and could have expected full support from his colleagues, but instead he behaved honorably.

Baseball immortality.

They retired decades ago, and their names are still brought up, because they've done something that only 20 people have ever done in the 135 YEAR HISTORY of professional baseball.

Galarraga had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to become a part of one of the most exclusive clubs in all of baseball, and it was taken from him.

when that is not close to true.

in the standings, a perfect game is just a win
in a contract push, a perfect game is just one exceptional outing

the value of a perfect game is that it puts your name into the history books as someone who has done something that almost no one else has accomplished.

He receives NONE of those benefits.

Armando Galarraga is the Al Gore of baseball right now. When someone lists the Presidents of the United States, they don't have a sidebar that includes guys that should have won but got fucked over. You're either on the list or you're not. Galarraga is not.

There are, believe it or not, more important things than being good at your job. Joyce (who by the way, doesn't even register on the scale of egregiously bad MLB umpires) happened to display one of those things when he made the unfortunately rare admission of a mistake. There's obviously nothing he can do about it, but there is a fine, long tradition of umpires simply lying about events on the field to match their shitty calls and if you don't think publicly working without that net takes a certain level of integrity then you're, um, wrong.

when ed hochulli screwed the chargers, all we heard about was what a shame it was a good ref was being defined by one incident. same thing with bennett salvatore, although everyone who follows even a little basketball knows he sucks.

why does it matter if he's been good in the past? he's proven grossly inadequate at his job.

and now he came out and said he feels bad? and i'm supposed to give him credit because he didn't go mafia quiet on us? no, no, no.

it's great that he admitted it, but i'm not giving him any points for it and it should be nothing more than a one-line sentence at the end of the story. yes, people make mistakes, but most people pay for the mistakes without an entire industry of media twits looking for different angles making apologies because, golly gee, all these umps work so hard.

he screwed up such an easy call in such a critical moment that i would have no problem with him getting fired and think he should be suspended for a long time, the same way dekinger should have never worked another game.

yeah, so save the perspective argument on this one. the only perspective worth having here is that he screwed up royally and officials who do so deserve nothing but punishment and certainly not cheap sympathy.

Also, with respect to your subject line, allow me to suggest that Chris Rock, delightful entertainer though he is, has never listed "moral philosopher" on his business card. When all the forces of the earth seem as natural as gravity pushing you to do the wrong thing (for reference, I offer Doug Eddings' 2005 ALCS press conference) by making it as convenient, protected, and even virtuous in the sense of showing loyalty to the job, as possible, doing the right thing says something about you.

Cardinal Newman said something once, and I'm stuck paraphrasing, that it's better that the entire world should crumble and slide into the ocean than one man commit one mortal sin. Blessedly, neither the physical world or Jim Joyce's immortal soul are at stake here, but the point remains that the things we do matter.

So, I'll repeat that whatever he's getting out of this is not, in any form, a reward. Me pointing out that he showed some character I don't often see from the job and a $1.35 will get him a cup of coffee.

The topic of whether he deserves to keep his job seems like a potentially fruitful discussion, though. I agree that he looked pretty incompetent out there, and there's not a single umpire I'd mourn if a house-cleaning were held. But it's worth pointing out that he generally does a pretty good job, and given the near-daily displays of badness from MLB umpires lately I'd find it pretty annoying if Jim Joyce were sacrificed for this and the resulting shift in umpiring crews meant the Twins got CB Bucknor behind the plate in their next series. None of them are good enough to protect, but off the top of my head I can think of a half-dozen guys whose dismissal would be more likely to result in better quality of officiating league-wide.

and applies in SO many situations.

I wasn't using reward in the sense of "Look! he's getting a raise." but that some people are willing to not address something because someone apologizes. I don't agree with him being fired or murdered (a suspension, perhaps, given the nature of the call and situation), but I also don't think apologies are always just quick fixes, even if they are sincere. I think you agree with that, based on your post, and I agree with your points for the most points.

Honest question, and not an accusation: if this was a Twins pitcher, or at least a pitcher from a team you didn't hate... you know where I'm going with this.

I'd be furious. I'm concerned that I'm being misunderstood as saying that this wasn't a big deal. It's a huge deal and I fully support a good, long healthy period of Tigers fans acting all aggrieved and shit.

But it seems like the last fifteen hours or so disclosed something about the two separate categories of Jim Joyce's umpiring ability and his character. Missing a crucial call that badly means the former isn't really an interesting avenue of discussion for me. The latter disclosure, however, seemed un-touched when I brought it up and it impressed me. It also struck a chord since the thing that bothers me far more frequently than umpires screwing up is the wagon-circling that occurs afterwards.

Perhaps I'm being too Catholic here, but contrition means something. I didn't detect any sense of wanting to be let off the hook or any expectation that his apology could fix something. He apologized because he was sorry. I don't believe that's as common as people think it is and I don't believe that an apology being useless is the same thing as being meaningless.

Feel bad for that cat, but damn...he handled it better than I would

At least a call like this can almost guarantee instant replay

And they should make it where calls can be overturned...imagine if that was a WS game

This has to be covered under replay. If not for perfect game/ no-hitter situation, at least game ending calls. Even if there wasn't a perfect game at hand, this should have been over regardless.

and as an ump and an official, I can guarantee you nobody feels bad about it more than he does.

But all this other bullshit, fucking with his Wikipedia ("Fucking Jew", someone put his date of death as today) is inexcusable and shows a lack of class.

It totally sucks for Galarraga. But at the end of the day, it's a regular season baseball game. Move on.

so much wrong with this here... he knew a perfect game was on the line, how could he be so wrong? If you are that wrong when your concentration should be at the highest, how can you ever be trusted to do the job again?

Also, if its that close in your eyes (it really wasnt close) call the guy out! nobody will be mad if you were barely wrong on an out call, but this situation? Holy shit...

and enough already ESPN saying "lets give jim joyce so much credit for being a class act and admitting he was wrong" wtf else is he gonna do? His fat fucking ego got in the way, unless u know 110% a guy is safe there no way can u call safe...

fuck u jim joyce, I honestly don't see how he keeps his job, though he will, because again, if you are THAT wrong on such an important call, u suck at what u do

he manned up & admitted he blew the call, with a level of accountability I haven't heard from a Major League umpire since......well, ever.

Dude is generally regarded as a quality umpire who fucked up a call that will be the only reason most people remember his name twenty years from now.

Nobody wants that shit on their resume & to Gallaraga's credit he accepted the dude's apology after the game plus finished the game like a pro after the call.

The people you really wanna be mad at is major league baseball for being the only reputable sport with no replay in any context (other than I guess the fair/foul HR in the postseason) over a decade into the twenty-first century.

Ask the Blackhawks how they would have felt if that horn was the final judge & jury in the Stanley Cup Final OT tonight or the Flyers didn't get credited with a power play goal that only replay would have truly shown to be a goal earlier tonight & instead found themselves in an 0-3 series hole.

It's cool that everyone has their ability to watch it over & over with the benefit of the instant replay this sport doesn't allow but folks need to get over themselves acting like this is worthy of the level of vitriol dude is going to be receiving or that he should lose his job.

Dude blew the call. Cabrera & Gallaraga made more of an adventure of a routine play then they needed to anyway but they did make the play however awkwardly it came about.

Like I said, this wasnt a hot summer day in the 12th inning between the Royals and the Orioles, this is 1 out to go for a perfect game, if you can not make that call right I question his ability to ever make a call right... Not only because he was so wrong, but because he is mentally going to be fucked now in big spots

I mean Donald did what you are supposed to, hustle there and put pressure on the defense to make the play... but it did look like a routine grounder to second, if Miggy just retreats to the bag that's not even a close enough play to blow... of course, Miggy can't watch a grounder go by him because what if the second base had a longer route then he thought...

Beyond all that, my biggest frustration is the runner gets that call about 1 every 25 times in baseball... a routine grounder that at best was close, they always call the guy out, Brett Gardner is that close to first everytime he hits a grounder and is called out everytime... fucking up is one thing but I feel like Joyce wanted the guy to be safe subconsciously or something, otherwise on a play that close u don't reward a guy for hitting some shit ass tapper to second

that caused him to call it that way, it was a disjointed looking play & Joyce obviously focused on the fielder rather than the bag for a split-second longer than he should have & blew it.

But this is not how an umpire wants to be remembered & his contrition afterwards to me says he's fairly devastated about the effect his mistake had on history.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VnPdn3PMuU this is fucking fantastic.

I swear man, this shit was worse then game 163 last year. I mean, the fucking play wasn't even close! Motherfucker was out by a stride and this ump has the best angle standing 7 feet away from the play. Literally no one would be opposed to them changing this to a perfect game. People in Detroit are so heated about this. It's a shame MLB will just stick to being an archaic game and let this define Joyce's career instead of giving the ultimate underdog Galarraga his due for throwing a perfect game.

Well, I doubt I'll ever see 28 up and 28 down again.

I just bought a pack of basketball cards at the dollar store on a whim and found out that Randy Foye holds the Minnesota Timberwolves record for rebounds by a guard with 16. Like, wow, Randy Foye is still a forgettable basketball player.

shoot, Steve Blake holds the record for assists in a quarter. Scott Skiles holds the record for assists in a game.

does any of that REALLY matter when we evaluate a player's career?

no, wins and losses do.

hopefully dude stays winning, only lonely, stat obsessed baseball freaks actually think this is anything more than one more blown call in a game that features plenty.

as far as history goes, it sucks that Galarraga doesn't get to be 21st. but in many ways, this should be more memorable than had he just got the 27 up/down -- nobody is forgetting about this game for a *long* time. it doesn't make it right, but Galarraga's performance won't be swept away in history *because* of the call itself.

as far as the call goes, from the second base angle the ball looked loose in Galarraga's glove -- it wasn't, but it looked that way for a split second. and him covering the bag was a bit awkward. obviously Donald was out upon replay, but there were enough quirky aspects to cast doubt.

although as a Detroit fan, I'd be mad anyway.

This outcome of this game didn't effect MLB's money, so policy won't change. A week of outrage, Gallaraga ends up being a footnote, and Joyce ends up being hated for the rest of life/career. But I'll bet dollars to donuts no rules change because of this.

in the book, and in baseball it's all about what goes down in the book. so yeah in the end he will be swept out of history because of the call.

>as far as the call goes, from the second base angle the ball
>looked loose in Galarraga's glove -- it wasn't, but it looked
>that way for a split second. and him covering the bag was a
>bit awkward. obviously Donald was out upon replay, but there
>were enough quirky aspects to cast doubt.

that's what I was thinking, that joyce must've thought he bobbled the ball. but he said he made the call because he thought Donald beat the throw. so it wasn't due to any quirky aspect of the play, he just straight up blew the call.

i get the feeling that most of the posters in this thread didn't play organized sports growing up because shit like this happens ALL THE TIME. the ump/ref makes a horseshit call ... what do you do? get in his face and possibly exacerbate the problem for the remainder of the game? no. you move on and go about the business of winning the game.

the call was botched. it was the last out of the game and it was botched. but galarraga smiles and goes about getting the 28th out. his post-game interview was beyond classy.

joyce admits to the error and is obviously torn up about it. anyone who heard the interview can hear the emotion. the guy fucked up and he knows it. should he be punished or reprimanded? yes, because he is a damn professional, but to go any further is to completely lose sight of reality.

shit happens. get over it.

He probably made 5 calls in Galaraga's favor,
in terms of strikes called, that got hitters behind and
helped him pitch so well.

from my count that is, could be wrong. But it seems, at first glance, like the people that are saying "let it go" aren't the biggest baseball fans in the World. I mean Brooklyn said "gimme the call and situation." I don't make this argument often,, because I don't typically enjoy sounding high and mighty, but honestly, you guys just don't get it. That's not condoning the crazies who will be sending death threats, or saying that it's as bad as a World Series call, or even saying anything about jim joyce (I think he should keep his job, for the record), but if you don't understand the steam being blown off here, you just don't get it.

I mean i kinda understand the "well, he gets more publicity this way" argument, but he'd probably STILL trade that in for a pefect game in the record books. I know I would. And plus, if that publicity is all based on people patting your back and saying "you shoulda had it," is that really the publicity you want?

Why was I almost lynched?

the idea that this was the most important regular season game ever. and to act like "oh, what you should really be going for is the win" is also misguided, because this is an accomplishment that automatically involves getting a win, so baseball tradition and rational thinking are NOT at odds with each other (as they would be with some other accomplishment, such as some old sh*tty hitter who used to be good going for 500 homers or some of those games ripken should have sat out).

and for the record, i also don't give a f*ck about the tigers, and generally want them to lose because it makes ceej angrier/funnier.

I don't know if Nolan Ryan ever did.

Roger Clemens either.

Wanna know why?

Because those guys were actual good baseball players
who built great CAREERS.

All sorts of slightly-above-average niggas done got
lucky and thrown perfects.

Look at Dallas Braden? Dude is getting SMASHED since
that perfect game. All signs point to it being pretty
lucky, and not worthy of long term praise

they get praise for it, but it is NOT treated as a career accolades thing, or even a single season thing. and to act like the guys who build great careers aren't treated with more prestige is absurd. maris got 61 and then never made the HOF. still earned his place in the record books for a few decades though.

to put it in perspective, if wilt had shot for 100, and then done nothing else in his career before or after, the game would STILL be remembered. not as much, because it wouldn't have been a legendary player involved, but it would still be in the record books and people would still talk about it.

it's just the nature of it. it is a moment of perfection that is VERY rare and you deserve to be in the record books for it. cry.

Wilt's game gets love BECAUSE he was the GREATEST OF

We remember Wilt because he was GREAT.

Not because of no bullshit single game.

The GAME is not relevant without the CAREER.

The only way these guys are gonna get baseball immortality is by doing something like throwing a perfect game.

Braden has his immortality, Galarraga doesn't.
