It really could be five but I'm hoping the C's can steal one in LA and make it a series. I'm not going to go against the C's but we are definite underdogs.

better than boston too. im not saying boston can't surprise us and pull a detroit 2004, but they have looked inexperienced, confused, and out of sync. add to that the fact that they struggled against two crappy teams, and have played another 1/4 of a season already.

The 2 best teams in the league were the Celtics and Pistons imo. Lakers aren't ready for that defensive intensity. There's no answer for Kobe, but there ain't no answer for the Truth and Ticket. If Ray is on, it'll definitely be 5.

At the beginning of the season most people were picking Boston to be 3rd in the conference and not reach the finals this year because of the supporting casts. The expectations didn't change till they were a quarter through the season.

the lakers were a .500 team and being called a possible lottery team. they were barely in anybody's top 8, let alone top 4 in the conference.

Nobody really knows who's gonna win. There's the historical factor, the Ray vs. Kobe thing, Paul in LA thing, etc.

Oh, and...the first time since 1998 that neither Shaq nor Duncan is in the Finals.

kobe will guard rondo and be able to roam on defense...he'll conserve his energy for the offensive end..unless pierce is just on an absolute tear, then we'll put kobe on him...but for the most part this is going to help us out a lot

Lakeshow in 5, we'll steal either game 1 or game 2, then win games 3-5

Just as long as his confidence stays high, he could have a large series if the Lakers decide to do your plan.

Both of these teams are damn good, very
well rounded teams who truly deserve this.

This series has something for everyone:

Star power, excitement, history, and
good fundamental basketball.

The whole household, grandpa to
niglets, will be able to watch and enjoy

decades ago, no, I will not.

If the hype was based on Kobe vs. Pierce (I am salivating for that matchup n/h,) KG vs. Gasol, etc, maybe.

But the inevitable "I'm excited for this matchup because 20+ years ago (conveniently the last time I followed basketball) these two teams played for a title" talk . . . no.

On paper, these two teams could deliver a helluva series, but IMO Lakers will make it unfortunately short.

And just when I think"these will be great matchups that will lead to a close, entertaining seven game series," I remember that this is Doc Rivers vs. Feel Jackson.

Basically. I'm hyped because these are two good basketball teams, the respective best in their conference, are playing for the title. Stern can save all that other shit for 45 year old white men who think that the game has become to thuggish and complain about tattoos and the like.

Well, this is where I disagree however. I don't think it will be short.

I happen to think it this will be a series of good matchups. I would just prefer to deal with that instead of all the extra shit. What's wrong with enjoying a basketball series for what it is and not what ESPN wants it to be?

Though due to the 2-3-2 format, this won't be an epic series and will end in 5, but they should be 5 entertaining games that I am looking forward to watching.

EDIT: See post #87 for an idea of what I don't like.

Whining about how you only appreciate
shit for their "purity" and not hype.

Nothing wrong hit hot videos with
big booty bitches or wax beef.

Calm down, big guy.

And there's nothing wrong with
anything being popular and hyped by
people.

Like I said, the problem with hype is when
its NOT supported by good matchups.

In this series, you have a top 5 all time
power forward, a top 10 all time player,
a top 10 all around pure shooter, and a
another hall of famer. That's a lot of
fucking talent in one season.

But that's besides the main point:

There's nothing wrong with the nostalgia.
That is what makes rivalries and traditions;
the matchups don't occur in a vacuum; they occur
in a very concrete historical context

By your logic, I should evaluate Yankee-Red
Sox battles on their individual merit, and
not on the fact that these teams hate each
other via a century of beef complete with spells
and curses and shit <--all that shit legitimately
makes them more fun, so fall back.

The Lakers and Celtics primed the world for
Michael Jordan the resurrection of the NBA
in the cocaine era

It is meaningful that they are in the NBA
finals, and the history does matter.

Fall back

From about 5 years old and after....I have so so many memories of watching Laker games with my family. From losing in the Finals to the Bulls and talking about the games the next day in my pre-school class to watching Sedale Threat's jumper to watching Dan fucking Majerle beat us in the playoffs to Nick the Quick hitting a turnaround three for the W at the last game at the Garden to seeing Vlade tip the ball to Nick and throwing punches along with him after he hit a runner to beat SA in game 4 of the playoffs...the list goes on and on. I used to have to plead and beg my dad to lemme stay up past 10 to finish the games lol.

My entire family is a Laker unit through and through...it's pretty fucking ridiculous. Check my text messages and you will see at least 50+ in the last day about them, the first thing my dad and I talk about are the Lakers. It's where I get my serious passion and love for the team from....something you can probably relate to in terms of the Red Sox.

somewhat patriots too because my family got in to them at the start of the bledsoe-parcells era. oddly enough the red sox fandom largely comes from my mom, not my dad. usually baseball is thought of as a "father-son" type thing but my dad was never in to baseball like that.

goddamn...i could have wrote this entire post myself, hahahaa. i'll add these memories just for the hell of it...

cheesy pregame music for Laker game on am570 to Magic bodychecking Isiah w/ time on the clock in game 7 to being a confused little boy seeing them lose to the Suns in the 2nd round in '90 (what? they're really done?) to Magic chucking the ball down court to let time expire to Eddie Jones dunking on everybody to Antonio Harvey in the dunk contest doing a 360 and getting nothing but glass to the only game winning shot in Shaq's career...

i'm still not sure we're ready for either.

but the Lakers have been proving me wrong from game one of this season and i'm hoping like a mug they continue to do so.

i like our chances, especially if we snatch one of the first two in Boston. we'll take that shit in 5 if we do.

if not, it's going all seven, and in that case Boston will get the chip.

personally, i wanted the pistons to advance.

i won't lie, the celtics scare me. they match up very well with the lakers. i'm not sure how we are going to defend pierce, kg and perkins, let alone allen....

however, the lakers bench might be better, and i think having phil over doc rivers is a definite coaching advantage. oh, and there is kobe...

its awesome to see paul peirce as happy as he is....this series is going to be awesome.

i'm just pissed we have to wait 6 fucking days for this start

i think i'd like it if i were the home team. cause chances are you're gonna steal one on the road and then you have the last 2 games at home and those are the most pressure-filled too.

true, along with the fact that like only 2 or 3 teams have ever swept the 3 middle games, with no home teams doing such (if memory serves me)

Dirk & Kobe got one MVP & both lead their teams to the NBA finals that season. Also, both lead their teams against the champs (SA) & won. Hell, even KG got there after winning in 2004. Nash still has some time to get there but if doesn't...... conversations in the key of talkin bout it..

In response to Reply # 0

It's nice that the greatest rivalry in the NBA is back on prime time in the finals..

with the 2-3-2 set up...What the Lakers are going to have to do is focus on getting at least a split in the first 2 games..

that sets up the possibility of being able to win 3 straight home games and winning the series..

I think one of the things that this post season has shown is that the Lakers can hold down their home court...They are undefeated at home in this playoffs....

One other thing that this playoffs..and the regular season has shown is that the Lakers are also a very solid road team..

I think the Celtics winning tonight pretty much canceled out the possibility of the Lakers having a week of rest, with the Celtics still being hot from playing through a game 7..

That being said I think this increases the chances of the Lakers winning at least 1 of the 1st 2 games..

as far as the match ups go..

What I like in the Lakers favor is that the Celtics are not a very athletic team.... with Pierce and Allen..I mean they are solid players..but they aren't going to kill you with their speed or athleticism... Kobe can shut down Allen.......and also when the Lakers go with their 3 guard offense...Sasha on Allen is a nice match up for the Lakers with Kobe dropping down to play Pierce...

in fact I think that 3 guard line up that the Lakers utilize at the end of most games gives them a very solid match up

Vlad Rad will start off on Pierce early..but he's not going to stay on him..and even so..Pierce isn't going to present a challenge to Vlad he cannot at least stay in front of him early in games.... Look for Luke Walton and maybe even Trevor Ariza to get solid minutes on Pierce when the Lakers aren't using the 3 guards...

Now as far as KG is concerned... Lamar can guard KG... I have no doubt about that... KG is a great player..but he's not going to kill the Lakers because I see not only Lamar guarding him....Pau guarding him sometime...Turiaf guarding him...

and again... the Lakers do not have to double KG just like they didn't have to double Duncan...

one of the keys I think for the Celtics will be the play of Perkins.... if he can get rough and tough against Pau... and score on his end... that could be a huge plus for the Celtics...

bench wise...Cassell...PJ...Big Baby...Posey....House.... Thats a solid Bench... I think the Lakers have the advantage on the bench as far as youth energy and athletism.... Farmar...Turiaf...Luke....Sasha... Ariza...

At the end of the day, I say the Lakers split at Boston...

and then I predict with 2 close games...and 1 not so close game...the Lakers will win 3 straight games at Staples..ending the playoffs undefeated at home, and winning the NBA title

Lakers in 5

write it down..

again.

I can EASILY see the Lakers taking one of the first two games in boston.

Problem is, I can't see us winning all 3 games at home.

And to be quite frank, the Celtics have played much better in the ECF than they did in the first two rounds. Not any worse than we did against the Spurs.

the Celtics still go through scoring droughts like Spurs. But they lock shit up too.

My gut says this is going 6 or 7 games.

Well time for logic to kick in.

If LA splits in boston, Lakers in 6 (they won't get all 3 at home)

If Boston wins the first 2, Celts in 6.

I Think a lot rides on those first two games cuz I don't think LA wins all 3 at home. The C's are playing very good and they are quicker, younger, and longer than the Spurs on D and the Lakers haven't seen a team this good defensively.

I think Kobe will break his neck to get one of the first two (I say game 1 is up for grabs) and if he gets the first one, the tone will be set and Kobe will dominate this series.

If Boston takes game one, LA will be taken aback a lil and will prolly get blasted in game 2. Come home, blast Boston, win a close one in game 4 and drop game 5 in a close one.

Hope I'm wrong though...hope it goes seven and every game is close, LA pulls it out in Boston in game 7 and Kobe avg's 35 a game.

lol

MAN, I love basketball.

This is about the Lakers vs. Celtics, like back when I was a kid. This rivalry made the league what it is today. You can't even write a script this good. 1 year ago today, nobody would have thought both these teams could get good enough to play each other in the finals..this ain't about making up for the past 3 years of wackness! Only youngsters must be thinking that

Let's be real...I'm 26, and that's really not enough to remember the intense 80s Celts-Lakers rivalry (hence why I didn't have such disdain for KG going to Boston preseason).

This shit is about Phil and Kobe not losing in the Finals again. Get that 10th and that 4th (respectively).

And even they were talking about getting rid of that 2004 taste. The rivalry is one of the greatest and will continue to be so if both teams remain at this level.....but right now, that brutal 2004 still looms largest in the mind of Lakers' fans.

buy a razor and shave that 8th grade facial hair of his. What the fuck is wrong with his beard growth? Its like the same every day and its like little patches here and there...how old is that clown?

KG needs to learn how to talk to people. Head down in post game news conference?? Every time? Is he shy? Or maybe he realizes he looks like a dinosaur.

OK enough bs...Im loving this matchup. 29 years old and probably the most excited I have ever been for an NBA finals.

I don't think Kobe can be denied. Pau will show up for the 1st time in 2 series. Odom has a great advantage here.

Ray Allen and Kobe will get into it most likely. And KG will have some monster games. Pierce will finally be defended and I think will get frustrated now and then.

Lakers have the deeper bench and smarter coaching staff. Celtics play great at home. Kobe and Fisher have been here before. So has the Zen Master.

No prediction, but fuckin excited!

bottom line is right now, nobody can stop kobe. he's on a run that i haven't seen since michael. rondo has been a space cadet most of the playoffs, and everyone that watches garnett knows that he's incredibly intense, but tends to lose focus in crunch time. of course, the lakers have their own problems: will pau come baby bottom soft? will lamar play intense EVERY game? will farmar continue his great playing? will kobe get a free throw attempt?

i expect this to be one hell of a series. forget the regular season games. both of these teams are very different, especially the lakers; especially kobe. i don't really see it going 7, though i know the league would love that. bliss for one team and their fans, and bitter heart ache for the other team and their fans. bring it on!

Apparently every Laker fan thinks either the Celts suck or this is a best of 5 series. They got no respect for KG an em. I give Ko-Ko props for being a relentless scorer but damn. Team ball, or a lack thereof, will decide who wins this.

Personally I think as much as Willie wants this title, Pierce, KG and Allen want it just as much. If these 3 underachievers can't lay it all on the line to win their first title ever then there is no hope for them.

THIS IS ALL ABOUT WHO HAS THE WILL TO WIN.

Reality rap and Sarah Fusion are making a bad name for all Celtics fans. I understand you guys haven't been to the finals for OVER TWO DECADES (when you of course lost to LA in 1986).

But no need to ruin the community for everybody bumping every Celtics thread from the entire season covering the entire page so the rest of us can't have any other discussions or find other threads.

Remember you haven't won it all yet and you look like a bunch of douche bags that clearly aren't used to winning. (except of course reality rap because he is a New York Giants fan this season)

Peep the silky turn around baseline J Bird hits at 1:58 - Flawless

LOL @ Mychal Thompson's buckets. I really didn't like his game back then.

Worthy at 6:45 mark with the drive to the cup.

Yeah this is the point in Magic's career where he could shoot a little bit. But the spin move for the layup at 7:18????? NASTY

something I truly haven't fully experienced yet.

We've had a few seasons where it seemed we may break through, but it never happened.

I'm gonna be thinking about Reggie Lewis ALOT during this Finals.

my household was a trip i was rooting the lakers and my grandmother rooted for the celtics.

now today this series could go either way. the Lakers remind of that wild Card team in football who made that last pick up and snuck through to the title but we never know how truly good they are. meaning I think the Lakers can get even better than what they have been thus far. the future is scary.

the celtics I see another 2-3 more runs after this year but this year would be there best chance and for some strange reason and call it crazy but the Celtics remind me of the Football New York Giants of this past year. Paul Pierce is due and I have always wanted to see Kevin garnett to win because he IMO belongs in that same sentence with Shaq and Duncan.

for me the keys for the celics to win is on the glass and at the point.

the lakers keys are lamar and the bench. Kobe is gonna be Kobe but it's gonna be close. the celtics are saving there best for last and should be the favorites going into the finals IMO.it should be a good series but neither team when compared to those 80's battles is Great but the Superstars are great meaning Kobe, Garnett.

David Stern gotta be doing the souljah Boy dance right about now.

the best two teams in each conference. the lakers have the offensive advantage, the celts, the defensive advantage.

the coaching advantage clearly goes to phil over doc, by a country-ass mile.

the celtics have the advantage in overall individual matchups, the lakers in overall team matchups.

the lakers have that one unstoppable player in kobe. the celtics have the most versatile defensive big in kg.

boston isn't used to seeing a team that puts up points like the lakers. l.a. hasn't seen a defensive team like the celtics.

it's an interesting dynamic. and although the celtics have grown up over the last series. i see it going at least six or seven with the lakers having the advantage. for boston, playing against a team with an unstoppable player is their kryptonite.

It ain't close.

Better weather, better women, larger variety of people of both geographic and ethnic backgrounds, far more things to do/places to go/, four times as many neighborhoods to check out, better weather (yeah, you can say that shit twice because the difference is that strong from late November to early March), an ocean, better food, more industries, the list goes on and on.

I give Boston the edge on trainsportation system because L.A. is too big and divided to have something comparable to the T, cost of living is cheaper (but not by enough to make up for the difference) and for me personally living a five-hour drive from home.

I got love for The Bean and still visit folks up there but Boston ain't even seeing West Los Angeles let alone the greater Los Angeles area.

There's a reason I run into packs of Boston cats running around out here every day I'm out or when I'm in a sports bar. You will never, ever, see that role reversed in this level of numbers and there's a reason for that.

But as for this series, Anal Warts>>>>>>>>>>>>>Kobe Bryant, so I'm rolling with y'all.......just don't think it's gonna end well but I'd love to be wrong.

Patriots fans worship the devil so they're the worst. Sawks fans hadn't seen a championship in decades to they can do whatever the hell they want. Cs fans haven't really all that bad. LA fans only seem bad because they're so much LA/Kobe hate so the board gets flooded with LA/Kobe posts & spinoffs (only allowed by white bols btw)..

and why should you have been scared? dig...

you played a nuggets team that can spell defense.

you played a utah team that was afraid of you guys from the jump.

you played a spurs team that ran out of gas in game 1.

imo, the only team you guys had to fear didn't even make the playoffs, and that's the warriors. captain jack, b-diddy & co. would've taken you guys a hard six games because it would've been a track meet.

whatever invincibility the celtics had got tarnished the minute they proved they could't be the hawks on the road.

as i see it, the title is yours to lose.

except this time I hope the Celts win. I moved to the US from the Philippines in 87 and one of my first memories of the states was watching that finals between the Celtics and the Lakers. For some reason I really liked how the Celts played as a team (even though they lost) and have been a fan since. So it's great that for the first time since before Reggie Lewis died (with the exception of the 2001 or 2002 year when they made it to the conf finals) that they've made some noise in the postseason.

In response to Reply # 139

1. the lakers basically ran through the west without opposition. a 12-3 record to finish the conference is impressive- even moreso when you realize the way it happened.

first, they secured home court with the number one seed in the toughest conference in ages, possibly ever. the swept one 50 win team, beat a very physical (impressive due to the relative softness of the lakers, real or percieved) utah team and did so by winning a game 6 in their building- the toughest place to play in the league this year.

then they dismantled the defending champs 4-1. they basically had no opposition on their way to the top.

thing is, there was plenty of opposition. utah and san antonio put up a crazy fight. the lakers had two monstrous, epic comebacks that bookended their romp through SA.

so, they have had games where they flat out dominated, games where they scrapped their way through close ones by the skin of their teeth, and had games where they faced tremendous adversity to win out in the end. they won in every possible way, against very different teams, rain and shine.

basically they beat a tough ass conference, beat 3 50 win teams, and despite the close ones, the tough ones, overall they dominated the best conference the league has seen in ages. they out finessed denver; defeated the brutality of the jazz; and overcame the experience of the champs, and being one of the few teams to actually win some road games when everybody was holding down home court......

....and kobe is unfuckwitable like never before right now. phil is coaching his ass off. the team as a whole is firing on all cylinders. they have shown the ability to grind it out and play some tough ass d. they overcame tough d.

so looking at all of that and then witnessing the celtics struggle to against the likes of the hawks and cavs to 7 games and then a sixer in D.... i can see why. it's absurd to see everyone at espn with that 5 game prediciton, i would expect a few stragglers- but it's also a testament to how good the lakers have looked in this run.

i see this going 6 games, lakers, personally. but who knows.

You can't compare that to 2004, that run was done in by the Malone injury coupled with the Shaq-Kobe feud reaching an unprecedented level of toxicity and falling off the rails in Detroit.

When the trainer of the team calls that 'the biggest meltdown in sports history', you know you're dealing with a rare case.

two teams are 'evenly matched'?

I understand wanting to be cautiously optimistic but six games with a closeout in L.A. is a best-case scenario.

If the Cs don't find a way to win a game in L.A. (becuase the Lakers will steal one of the first two in Boston) in game 3/4, this could very well be a five-game series.

as they've gone through the playoffs.

Watching that Nuggets series again, on the real, the nuggets folded after game 2. I think the Lakers in round 1 are a completely different team than who they are now. This team transformed right around Game 4 of the Utah series. They got their swag then. They won ugly in game 5 and closed it out like they were supposed to.

With Cs I think after game 7 of the Cavs series, they started figuring out who does what at what time (Pierce). They beat the Pistons twice in Detroit. And regardless of how off and on Detroit is with theirs, from a confidence standpoint that's big.

I still think when it comes down to it, the Lakers will win in 6 because I'd take Kobe in crunchtime over Pierce. But I don't see us flat out dominating every game.

I think the Celtics started by regressing, badly.....and I don't think they've made anywhere near all the way back to where they were in say February.

Meanwhile the Lakers just ran through the much ballyhooed Western Conference never once trailing in a series and losing an average of one game in each.

You don't find the fact that they needed 7 and a bounce here or there to get past a one-man team and then managed to get by a beat-up Piston team almost in spite of themselves the way they finished game 5 to be a little unsettling if you're a Boston fan?

With the 2-3-2, 5 is a real possibility. If they win one in Boston, which I think they will, then win Game 3.......by that point they'll be smelling blood. This could get ugly for the Cs, whereas I think they'll need all 7 to have a shot to win the series on their end.

They may not have made it all the way back. But I think Pierce and Ray have found some semblance of success. I don't think they're the same team they were against Cleveland.

You can look at it like that. But again, I think getting used to having to beat a team 4 times in a series takes getting used to. I think you have to throw the first two series out after the the pistons series. They won that series in 6 games. I realize detroit is wishy washy. But they bounced back from giving up game 2 at home. I can see them winning one in LA and losing one of the first two in boston.

I agree. I'm just not sure the Lakers win 3 straight games in LA. That will be tough.

This team, since Cassell and all that, has never really gotten that mojo back.

And even though Kevin Garnett is a Hall of Famer who's had a mostly solid playoff thus far, he's really not a 'big game/big moment' guy. That's bound to come into play in the first series the Cs play where they're not the better team on paper.

They don't mean much because Pau wasn't there, I don't get what's hard to grasp about that.

This team is completely different since they got his pussy ass and have been on an incline ever since, not the least of reasons is because it moved Lamar into a role he's more suited for both in terms of position and pecking order.

And Duncan absolutely abused Gasol in a way Garnett can't and will not, in terms of taking him into the post and scoring down there seemingly at will at times. Didn't matter. From a numbers standpoint, KG will be hard pressed to maintain the gap over Pau that Timmy had.

Parker also got by Fisher most times he wanted and kept him in foul trouble, Boston has no point guard capable of doing that.

Ray Allen's going to be guarded by Kobe and he's been struggling most of the postseason.

I expect Pierce to have at least a couple big games, I just don't see it being enough.

True, I'm just looking for any sort of barometer of success of this team and showing that the Celtics HAVE beaten the Lakers this year, even though the Lakers that the C's beat in 07 was different in many ways. I mean, no Bynum snatching boards is a difference, as well as the Lakers addition of the Spaniard and Odumb filling up the stat sheet again, as you've pointed out.

This Celtics team, when firing on all cylinders is no-question the best team in the entire league, but they have to prove that they are in fact that team.

>Parker also got by Fisher most times he wanted and kept him in

Rondo can drive and get to the paint tho, he's just not finishing too well.

In the latter part of the Pisstains series the old-Ray so to speak came back, and even when he's not hitting 3's he's getting to the paint. I haven't been paying attention to Kobe's D since the first week of the season, but the Laker Fans here claim it's better, so I dunno.

It's hard to defend off double-screens and shit like that, which what was getting Ray open shots against Detroit.

>I expect Pierce to have at least a couple big games, I just

Oh Pierce is going to fucking love the atmosphere there. I can see him averaging 30+ for the entire finals.

I don't think he'll average 30 just cause they have other options, but he loves playing against L.A. and I can see a couple huge games out of him.

Not only have they not played the Lakers since the arrival of Gasol, the last time they played was Dec 07. Now, I'm not about to say LA is gonna run thru Boston but if you think this LA team is remotely close to the team Boston beat over 6 months ago you're fooling yourself.

Those regular season losses to Boston mean about as much as LAs losses to SA & Utah during the regular season.

I'd like to see it but I would never bet on it. I've been watching the Lakers get better and the C's get worse for over two months now.

I don't trust KG in a big spot, Feel and Doc is a horrific mismatch if coaching ends up coming into play, the Lakers bench is better, Ray looks borderline washed up and he'll be guarded by Peanut, etc.

The Lakers will win one of the first two in Boston and that put the C's in a bad spot when they come into Staples for three straight games. If the Lakers win two at home all the sudden you're in an elimination game in their gym.

In response to Reply # 0

The Celtics have a pretty fucking small margin for error if you ask me, even if they take game one I only give them a better than not shot at the series whereas losing means they are screwed.

They have to capitalize on the emotion of being there and their defense is going to have to shift from doubling to not doubling and man to zone at opportune times to win the series. It's going to be psychological warfare and that is a game that appears to favor the Lakers.

A big problem I see here other than the obvious ones like depth (overall and as far as guys who can guard Kobe) is that the Cs do not have a speedy point guard. You need a fast point guard because at worst it takes Fisher off the floor and forces Farmar to play a lot and at best it does the Lakers EXTRA dirty like it has in years past. Despite the job he did on Parker, I don't think it could be counted on over and over.

Rondo is pretty weak in that regard though, he lets the Lakers do what they like to do at both ends with their point guards so that eliminates one favorable matchup. From there is there ONE matchup the the Celtics have a CLEAR advantage in? I cannot think of one, sure Garnett and Pierce have advantages but they are not so substantial that they can clearly be exploited, especially since those guys are going to have to keep working harder on defense.

This is going to have to be a balls-out effort for Boston to win and they will have to jump out to a 2-0 lead. So far they have not adapted well to games where it's not a grinding pace and I doubt the Lakers will play the style that Cleveland and Detroit did at any point in the series.

I'll take the Fake Show in six and I think it's more likely five than seven.

The long layoff is BEAT, I am not even going to be in the country by the time this shit ends.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

I am like 90% certain the Lakers are going to lose this series. The C's dominated the reg. season meetings. Regardless of personnel changes, the Lakers still are not a very good defensive team. They were fortunate that Ginobili and Parker were so atrocious from the perimeter because I guarantee you Ray Allen and Pierce won't be. Not to mention House, Posey, Cassell are a far cry from Finley, Barry, and Udoka. You give them open looks (which the Lakers will) and they are going to make you pay. I've watched bball too long to know that defense wins titles. This matchup is going to be similar to the Lakers/Pistons final. The C's are just too good defensively and the Lakers can't win games with theirs. They're going to be flustered offensively and fall behind, make pushes to get back in the game, but it won't be enough. The only chance the Lakers have of competing is if the bench players can be a consistent spark of offense. And if Ariza is 100% and IF he even plays, they are going to need every ounce of his defending.

Rick Fox ain't walking thru that tunnel. Celtics in 5.

If LA can play their game (uptempo, control the paint/boards, bench contributes, Kobe dominates) they'll win the series.

If Boston can play their game (control tempo, tough defense, key role/bench player contribute, Big 3 knock down their shots) they'll win the series.

When people make predictions, they're assuming that the team they picked will be able to play their game & impose their style of play more than the opponent.

>I am like 90% certain the Lakers are going to lose this

Two games six months ago don't mean shit, that is just something for ESPN to flash on the screen, especially because Kobe did not play well in those games.

>very good defensive team. They were fortunate that Ginobili

I think they did a decent job on Parker which I doubted going in because he is a poor matchup for Fisher and Farmar kinda sucked balls up until then. Ginobili being 40% was a break though. They don't have to worry about guarding Rondo though so we are not talking a backcourt matchup, more like a wing matchup with Lamar and Kobe against Pierce and Raymundo.

Not to mention
>House, Posey, Cassell are a far cry from Finley, Barry, and
>Udoka. You give them open looks (which the Lakers will) and
>they are going to make you pay.

Hahahaha, are you serious? Barry was killing them from the outside and Cassell is playing like he belongs in the Turkish summer league right now. Posey is a better player than Udoka, OK, that's about it.

I've watched bball too long

Yes, Rick Fox, the lynchpin of Laker dynasties. I think the Lakers defensive struggles are overestimated. They had some runs where they couldn't stop a dime rolling down the sidewalk but they can string together stops fairly well and the Celtics are not exactly killers in big situations. They blow opportunities and leads, not all of them but too many for a veteran team.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Paul Pierce's 57 postseason games played are the most by a Celtic who has never won an NBA title.

A Celtics-Lakers NBA Finals brings many classic memories to mind. Most of these memories are distant, dating back to an era where Michael Jordan was a brash kid and NBA scouts were drooling over the likes of Armon Gilliam and Dennis Hopson.

Pierce: Highest PPG vs Single Foe
Opponent PPG Games
Lakers 27.9 16
Nuggets 27.3 18
Suns 27.2 18
SuperSonics 25.4 17
Warriors 25.1 17

But in the 21 years since these old rivals have met in the finals, the greatest Celtic of the "down" period in franchise history has also made a name for himself against the Lakers. Pierce, who grew up in Inglewood, Calif., in the shadows of the Great Western Forum, has always saved his best for the Lakers.

Pierce has averaged 27.9 points per game in his career versus the Lakers, more than his average against any other team. In fact, March 13, 2001 could be considered his unofficial entry into the league's elite. Pierce scored 42 points on 13-of-19 shooting in a 112-107 loss at L.A.

Pierce was nearing the end of his breakthrough third season at the time. He averaged more than 20 points (25.1 ppg) for the first time and took the reins from Antoine Walker (23.4 ppg) as the C's leading scorer. What happened after the game is what made it a watershed moment in Pierce's career, though.

Shaquille O'Neal, in the midst of his three-peat and a role as the most dominant force in the game, pulled a Boston reporter aside and offered the following: "Take this down. My name is Shaquille O'Neal, and Paul Pierce is the truth. Quote me on that, and don't take nothing out. I knew he could play, but I didn't know he could play like this. Paul Pierce is the truth."

Highest Active PPG vs Lakers
Foe PPG
Gilbert Arenas 29.1
LeBron James 28.8
Paul Pierce 27.9
Allen Iverson 27.0
Shaquille O'Neal 26.0

Pierce is a unique character in these Finals. He is the one member of the Celtics' big three who has been in Boston through plenty of lean years. He also grew up in Inglewood during the 1980s, where the Showtime Lakers were the hottest attraction in town. And his numbers show that he brings something "extra" when he plays the Lakers.

Despite the tremendous scoring average, perhaps the most impressive aspect of his game against the Lakers is that he has averaged 10.7 free-throw attempts per game, which is proof of his more aggressive approach attacking the basket against LA.

When Pierce has been criticized in the past, one of the main weaknesses that his detractors see in him is a tendency to fall in love with his jumper too much at times. Pierce's ability and willingness to attack the rim could prove crucial in this series.

In his career, Pierce has seven 30-point games and one 40-point game against Los Angeles.

went to OSU for school..

I'm a Pistons/Lions /Red Wings fan....(fuck baseball)..

although I'm not as die hard as the other Detroit fans on this board....

(edit..i used to be in middle and high school...
..after college...i stopped caring as much)

i care about Detroit pro teams...but college bball and fb are my cup of tea more than than professional leagues...most of the time i tend to follow the pro leagues just to see how former Buckeyes are doing

I would have rather seen Det/LA again...or even Boston San Antonio

but beating the Spurs would have been nice retribution...

they CANNOT let this team stand alone. they're always comparing it to the 80's teams. although i wasn't really around to watch those teams, besides the fact that they're good they seem nothing alike really, in the same way that the entire league has changed its style of play. just the fact that they were instantly called the Big 3 right after the Garnett trade pretty much is kinda ridiculous. if they win the trophy they've done enough to cement their own legacy. it's a lot to live up to, leave them alone.

oh, this could be the greatest series ever for okayplayer.

the amount of Laker ammo we have at our fingertips is amazing. If the C's lose, I might even get more angry about not getting to up some of these posts than over them losing to the lakers, that's how great this is.

as for the series...i'm scared about the boston bench being misused and the amount of crap doc will get if that cost with the amount of space sportswriters will have to fill. i think the extra rest the lakers have is negated a lot by the ABSURD scheduling of so many days off between games.

as for teams, it's odd. The adage about defense wins championships makes me think Boston. the one about best player and coaching makes me think LA. That Kobe couldn't get off against boston in the regular season makes me think Boston could win this one. That it was the regular season makes me think it doesn't matter.

Assuming Ray Allen is back from his extended slump, I feel pretty confident--having him as a spot up shooter really improves the boston offense. but that's a BIG assumption.

However, I think Paul Pierce is the key. He's playing for the NBA championship back home. If he uses that to blow the fuck up but not become a gunner, I think the celtics steal at least one in LA off of that effort. At the same time, PP also sometimes will go back to gunner-mode and then they're f*cked in LA.

I have NO idea how this series is going to play out. which is why I'm hyped. that and because laker fans/kobestans are getting aggressive again with their dickslobbery.

i think perkins and KG and 'nem can definitely out-rebound gasol, odom, and turiaf, etc...

but if KG's on the sideline, that will hurt you guys too much...so we just gotta get that nigga in foul trouble. but i dont see many calls going our way in the first two road games. it's definitely going to be physical...lol i can already see gasol getting his ass punked down there...hopefully he gets his little 10-15 footer going though. i think you guys are going to be surprised with how well we play defense though. and honestly, if pierce is having a dominant game, which with luke and radman guarding him can definitely happen more times than not, we'll put kobe on him in the 4th and that will be that.

to the pre-series shit talk... its a long enough wait anyway

plus, there aren't even that many posts going on with regard to straight Lakers v. Celtics (this and the Big 3 one really), unless u count all the Kobe shit... and WC's seemed more geared toward the rivalry and the history of it, cool with me - Lakers/C's is a big deal and there should be multiple threads if they touch on different aspects/viewpoints, why not

Thats just plan ignorance by a poster that is too big in his own mind for this community. Good riddance to him.

We don't have four Super Bowl threads covering the game, history of the teams, coaching staff, and analysis of QB match ups.

There is no reason to have multiple "lakers vs Celtics" preview threads before the 1st of potentially seven games is played.

Of all people I'd expect better out of you matinho

it

its not like it was cluttering the board - is it really bothersome to people to have that one extra C's/Lakers thread, discussing the rivalry?... there really arent that many (more now since I looked yesterday, but even so people are participating and they are different and interesting), if you dont like it, just don't click it -- I think its much more bothersome to look through 300 replies, i am NOT a fan of the mega-centralized-thread

I just think this is a unique circumstance, Celtics Lakers - NBA Finals, renaissance -- as a Celtics fan and and NBA fan I just think this deserves as much attention as it can get, nothing else is going on in sports right now that's as big as this -- and this is a different story than the Super Bowl, esp. for OKP

of course a part of me is being greedy and want as many threads on this momentous series as possible... OKP must milk the amazing potential

really not a big deal tho lol.. and the WC factor is an issue unto itself... i'm just sayin

Well, not all of them, but Laker playoff tickets went on sale all together - Ticketmaster refunds you if they don't make it to your game (so you can buy any round when they go onsale). I guess I just assumed all teams do it that way.

stayed into his junior year if the Bruins hadn't made their first Final Four trip since the O'Bannon squad and Farmar didn't lead all scorers in the national championship game.

First half he was the only dude holding that team up while Afflalo dissapeared per usual, second half he and the Bruins just ran out of gas but it was enough of a showing that it made sense to come out(particularly with Collison right behind him).

Dude was like 19 when they drafted him and I still figured he'd be displacing Smush by January of his rookie year.

I still wanna see that Nick Young documentary, him and Jordan are tight, I think it follows Nick's last year of high school.

Jordan'll be alright, I think he reached an apex of awfulness in that Utah series, Deron is a *terrible* matchup for him.......he can't handle a guard that physical who's also skilled. You won't see him look that useless again, maybe for the rest of his career.

But Fish/Farmar vs Rondo/Cassell is a wash at best, probably advantage L.A.

is how Faker fans can bounce back and forth between saying the players(beside willie) suck one minute and good role players the next. When they lose it's because Odom f'd up or Farmar/Fish was cold or wait til bynum comes back. then when someone disses the Fakes or says they'll lose then all of a sudden Odom is a great pf and Pau is a solid second option.
Either the Lakesters are bums being carried by Ko J Simpson or they are the best TEAM in the West. Pick one
When the Fakers lose it should rest on Willie's puny shoulders.

Nuggets>Hawks

unless they mean that it was an easier path simply because they played less games than the Celtics, i'm not buying it.

1. I have a feeling Ray will have his best series stat wise. Not sure if it means he's going to be a clutch performer. But if we put Sasha on Ray, Sasha isn't going to be nearly as successful defending him as he was against ginobli and other cats.

2. LOL @ cats making a big deal out of Kobe and Ray Ray feud. Talking about getting fools heads and shit. They tryna win a ring. Them muhfuckas ain't concerned about that bullshit.
