"OFFICIAL OKAYSPORTS 2006 NBA MOCK DRAFT POST"

Yep, we've got RULES:

WHEN IT IS YOUR PICK, REPLY TO MY POST THAT SAYS ROUND 1 or ROUND 2 (whichever round it is)...

Post your picks like this...

#1 Houston Rockets select Yao Ming, C, China

Then give us a little insight into your selection (must use either upside, long or ball-friendly in every explanation)

There will be another post for discussion of the picks

Try to...
NOT reply to original post
NOT reply to the post with the pick to discuss it
DO be around when it's close to your pick

As far as timing goes... we're going to need to get 2/3 picks done a day at worst.

So if the pick before you is made before ....

MADE BETWEEN MIDNIGHT-NOON EASTERN you must pick before 5PM EASTERN or be skipped

MADE BETWEEN NOON-5PM you must pick before MIDNIGHT EASTERN.

MADE BETWEEN 5PM EASTERN and MIDNIGHT EASTERN you must pick before NOON the next day.

the kid has low post game and lots of upside.
listed as PF, but can play C, weak side opposite bosh cleaning the offensive glass.

looked at offers to trade the pick but nothin stood out given lamarcus' ball-friendlyness.

lamarcus, bosh & charlie gives up a good crop of big men, a quick young frontline that hopefully thru free agency/trades, can have some veteran support behind it.

Too many unproven players in spots we are weak. Too little proven players in this draft. It's mostly upside this year. Quite frankly Chandler is weak and just a bean stalk. He hasn't bulked up at all and has not developed a post game. It's clear we've lost our post edge in losing Curry as weird as that sounds and the best big man this year is already taken.

It was between Thomas and the italian kid. I went with Thomas. I figured boards and blocks are more crucial for us since we have deng, gordon, heinrich, and nocioni doing the scoring it seems. The italian kid, while he might be the next dirk, we don't have time to wait. Thomas can block and hit the boards now. Sort of like a more athletic Rodman.

Well this was probably one of the easiest picks of the draft.. If you look at the Bobcats rosster you see a glaring need for a shooter and a scorer..

-You have solid play at the Point guard position with felton and knight..
-A versatile swingman with Gerald Wallace that can defend, rebound and finish out on the break
-Solid but still a work in progress front court with Okafor, Brezec, Ely and May

A jump shooter and three point threat with size seemed like the perfect pick..

It was either Morrison or Gay but I chose morrison because hes a bit more vocal on the court and could add some entertainment and spotlight to the organization

No doubt Rudy Gay will be a player in this league and should be taken pretty soon after this pick

In response to Reply # 1

It was between him, Bargnani and Brandon Roy. I didnt want to choose Bargnani because of the spectulation of him not wanting to play for us and ofcourse theres always the potential 'european bust' that can always happen.

When comparing Roy and Gay, it was a tough choice to make based on team needs, but as I further analyzed it, there was no question who would be a bitter fit for this team. Gay can probably also spend time as a 2 guard in this league and still succeed, but I based this selection on superstar potential, and thats what Rudy Gay has written all over him.

If this team pans out the way its suppose to, they have their future point guard (Bassy), Sharpshooter (Webster), Slasher (Gay), and low post presence (Randolph).

In this *weaker* draft, I believe Rudy has the most potential to be that elite player. He has the body and athleticism that GMs drool over (another upside over Roy), he has the shooting ability, and can also be seen as a lock down defender. His knock? Like his buddy, Villanueva, might be his desire and work ethic, which I believe, like Villanueva he will show people why he was considered the 1st overall pick at the beginning of the year.

He should also bring out some competition in Darius Miles, which *should* make Miles earn his minutes by giving his all.

All in all, I think it was the best player available at the position, and Gay has the most potential in this draft of becoming an elite player.

In response to Reply # 1

This thing needs to get moving and I think the Hawks would be estatic to see Bargnani drop to them.

He's very long and his upside compares to Dirk says the scouts.

He seems to be the classic Euro and needs strength in the post, but he's young enough to develop it.

With 47 Small Forwards on the roster and a thin backcourt and frontcourt the Hawks would like to pair Barnani with Zaza and go all Euro all the time.

If only they would've taken Chris Paul things would be looking up in the ATL.

They've got like 20 Mil in cap space to bring in a point guard and they should have a solid crew to build around with

Joe Johnson
Josh Smith
Childress
Marvin Williams
Bargnani
Zaza

I wanted to go big with someone like Shelden, but Roy is supposedly the most NBA ready player in the draft. However, with him and (if he ever gets his head on straight) McCants, we could potentially be dangerous offensively from outside and mid-range, hopefully taking some pressure off KG (if he's here ate the start of the season, and I believe he will be). Ricky Davis won't be around too much longer, and Hassell wouldn't have to be counted on to do things that aren't really his specialty (like scoring).

I like Shelden, but if Roy is there we have to take him.

Well, we tried to make a trade but it didn't work.

In the end, it comes down to Marcus Williams vs. Randy Foye. Since I'm a sucker for guys with pure PG skills, I'll go with Marcus despite his troubled past and questionable quickness.

and there was really only one option here.

Basically. I pray this happens irl.

If Marcus or Rudy dropped I wouldve really thought about it.

But were fine at PG with Rafer (he played solid over the second half of the season)
and there are more solid swingmen available than big men via draft and FA.

Shelden is a perfect PF for us.

His jumpshot has developed every year even though its not at Juwan Level.

he provides strong defense.

Say what you want about Dukies, but he knows how to play the game.

I see him as a Pj Brown type cat who can avg near 10 and 10 his whole career.

and for this draft thats not bad.

After next year we will lose Mutombo, so having Shelden as a guy who can play some backup 5 for Yao is also valuable

We tried to make trades but our oppressive salary structure did not allow it. This pick gives us a budding low post presence with good agility and good post moves. This gives us a shot blocker and a presence on the other block from diogu. Now baron just needs to learn a good post entry pass.

In response to Reply # 1

I typed this up as selecting Foye because I'd like to see him and Jameer in the backcourt together but I couldn't hit submit.

With Jameer solidified at the 1 and Arroyo also in the fold I couldn't bring aboard another 6'3 combo guard.

The Jameer/Arroyo backcourt worked well last year when used and I wouldn't want to limit that.

So basically I took Brewer

I considered JJ as a nice option to have as a kick out option when Jameer drives or for Dwight to pass to out of the post.

Would've loved to have had Landlord to pair with Dwight and DARKO.

But it came down to Foye/Brewer

Brewer is not a great shooter and more of a slasher.
He's very long especially in the backcourt and gets his hands on a lot of loose balls (nohomo).

I really like Brewer and think he will be able to score in the league. It was very hard to pass up Foye but team need brought me to Brewer.

let the hate begin, but Redick is a very polished shooter, and is an instant offensive upgrade for the Hornets who are in the bottom tier of points per game and 3 point % in the league. He would be a great compliment to JR Smith who has otherworldly athleticism and unrealized potential. Redick is not a freakish athlete, and his ballhandling could be better, but he is a very hard worker and a clutch player. He could very easily be the next Ray Allen.

In response to Reply # 1

Billy King is very high on Cedric Simmons, but I'm not.

Foye and Iverson is a small backcourt.

But with Iverson you're always going to have a small backcourt. I like Randy's experience being in a guard dominated offense and I like his abillity to guard well on the perimeter.

With this pick the 76ers strengthen the backcourt and leave the frontcourt as the eternal problem.

PG- Iverson
SG- Foye
SF- Iggy
PF- Webber
C- Dalembert

Bench
Willie Green for Foye
Korver for Iggy
Yournamehere for Webber
Hunter for Dalembert
Ollie for Iverson

Keeping Foye in the city could only help the Sixers attendance problems as well.

I selected the explosive atheltic scorer to pair him up with another Big Ten mate from a year ago an Deron Williams...

Utah hasnt had a decent SG since jeff hornacek.. they had raja bell for a brief stint but he doesnt really suit there still of play...

I think ager can score in the half court setting and provide the foot speed on defense to stick with some of the nba's smaller combo guards...

A center would be a great here but I dont see one worthy enough....

This guy is not really polished, but he is really athletic and PJ Brown help could groom him into the Hornets' 5 of the future (it should have been Jamal Magloire but the Hornets ownership are retards)

With Peja looking to be let go this year, the need for a SF/PF increases. Sticking with the athleticism of the team, the pacers take Shawne Williams. Packed with potential, a lineup of him and Granger at the 3/4 would be very nice. When considering his age, he played a year at a prep school, so he is actually 20, and not 19, even though he left after his freshman year. Has the body to play from day one.

His upside is limitless, he can play a multitude of positions. Possible Paul Pierce, or potential Walt Williams? That is the question. Landing either at #17 is still a positive. Had he stayed one more year, we'd be talkin about this guy being a possible lock for lottery...

In response to Reply # 1

Wizards' team needs are pretty simple. 1) Get an athletic big man who can rebound and play weak-side D 2) get a backup PG

With Hilton Armstrong and Cedric Simmons off the boards, taking Johnson could satisfy the first need in a big way.

Among the ACC league leaders in rebounds last yr., Johnson is a ball hawk on the both ends of the floor. Johnson would add a physical presence in the middle, while possessing the ability to hit that mid-range jumper as well. Though he's physically gifted, consistency is still a question however.

I was really tempted to take a chance on Saer Sene, the Senegalese international, but considering how raw he is skill wise, I'm not sure the team has the luxury to wait another year for the big man to develop. Peter John Ramos' development is already in progress.

Quincy Douby, Mardy Collins, and a couple of other Intl. players are also attractive to take at #18, but with Navarro possibly coming over from Europe, taking a guard this high might not make too much sense either. Plenty of guards should be available to address the Wiz' depth needs at the 1 or 2 later in this draft.

Okay, this was a difficult decision because there are some players that can make an impact on this squad immediately. Point guard Rajon Rondo can team up with Artest to bring havoc on the court. Sergio Rodriguez seems to be bring crazy skill, but with leadership abilities that J. Will lacked. Quincy Douby would bring back the BJack that we love and miss.

...that said, Sene is length and athleticism that every team needs. Question is...how long does he need to develop. Is he a the next Sam Dalembert or will come and go like Keon Clark. My bet he mirrors Sammy more, with his hardwork and background. Keon was a blunted out King when he was here.

That's my word.

Let's be real here, the Knicks need a whole new squad. But I looked into it, and the rules don't allow me to make that happen.

I was really looking at Shawne Williams, but he was snatched up.

I went with Macus over Thabo Sefolosha cause he's a lil taller and a lil bigger. Plus he can shoot. There's some upside to this kid and they've got him working on his defense (which they say is improving).

So that's my pick and I'm sticking to it (I don't have a choice now).

Back to the war room for the 29th pick.

We got a defender, someone who can handle the ball away from Steve Nash, and someone with really nice offensive talent that will fit well into Phoenix's offense-heavy routine. He's someone who can compliment Nash while learning from him. With Amare looking like he's coming back next season, adding Mardy to a Raja/Steve/Barbosa backcourt with the Marion/Diaw/Thomas/Amare frontcourt makes for a nice-looking team with two more draft picks to go, including one more first-rounder.

I felt we needed a point guard, due to what seems to be an injury prone back-court, specifically with Mighty Mouse and B-Jax. I like his vision, and he plays like a how true point guard should play. He may get pushed around because of his (lack of)size, but should be fine in the long-run. As for the criteria of using the three terms listed above, Farmar has great upside and ,as a point guard, he is very ball friendly.

Clearly our greatest need. I like Rondo because I could see him coming off the bench for Snow and making an impact with the team quickly. He's a great passer too with good vision to eventually take pressure off Lebron and let him do what he does best. And of all the PGs available I think he'll help us most defensively.

I was also looking at Quincy Douby for his shooting skills & I really don't know enough about Sergio to take him over Rondo.

Basically without trading up into Lottery position, which won't happen Rajon Rondo would be ideal if he somehow fell this far down, which I don't see heappening.

Since Kurt Thomas is an old man and Amare is a ticking time bomb of major injuries, they had to go with a smaller guy who hustles in the paint to hold down the center position for much of the season. Boone gives them a long athletic player to put into the paint who likely wouldn't get more points per game than, say, Kurt Thomas, but who can help a TON on the boards (an area where the Suns struggled this year) and can put some serious presence into the paint on the defensive end (another area where the Suns struggled).

With these two picks, you have:

Backcourt: Nash, Bell, Barbosa, Collins
Frontcourt: Amare, Marion, Diaw, T. Thomas, K. Thomas, Boone

I would say if they both contribute reasonably their rookie year (which they are both more than capable of doing), this will significantly increase the depth of the Suns' bench and their defensive capabilities.

In response to Reply # 1

I really thought about taking a Quincy Douby or Guillermo Diaz here, given that JET is a free agent and we need insurance in case he bolts. But, if that unfortunate scenario happens, we still have Marquis Daniels who could step in and play the 2 or whatever areas necessary. If there were a more all-around guard available - i.e. one who could provide what Adrian Griffin does, but be more of a scoring threat - I would have taken him. This pick gives us a tough interior type player who can fill in ably at the PF position to rest Dirk if Van Horn doesn't return, and could play C if Avery wants to go small at some point...I wanted Boone though, and also thought about Pittsnogle/Novak considering all Van Horn does is toss up 3's anyway, but I don't think that style is quite what Avery would have picked on his own...

I really didn't know who to pick up here. I was weighing a few options. I finally decided to go with Lowry over Douby because we honestly don't need another scorer. Lowry is more of the pg that we need to run this offense. He still has some developing to do, but I think he's ready now for the league.

I'd write more, but I'm at work, and I'm actually working today.

In response to Reply # 1

Nice. I was hoping he would fall to me. If he had gone at about 20 or so I would have tried to trade for him. Im also shocked that Douby has dropped this low, but I just cant pass up on Brown. I loved his game ever since he went to Michigan State. Hes got good strength and plays much bigger then 6'3. With Gay and Browns athletcism, this could turn into a highlight reel team. The great thing about both players is that they are no slouches on defense neither. My main focus was also drafting players from proven college programs and thats what I got with both Brown and Gay.

Further elaborating on Browns game, I think it is much more suited for nba style of play. His jumper will improve with much more practice so im not too worried about that. Overall I think it was a great draft for the Blazers.

We though about dealing for Travis Outlaw and grabbing Sergio Rodriguez here but decided to opt for Bassy and Thabo instead. With this move, we can start Telfair and move Delonte West to the sixth man spot. Thabo is a defensive minded swingman who can back up Wally Szczerbiak and hopefully replace him in a year or two.

They (I) took the Italian for them in the first round.
Their biggest need is for a ball-friendly point to solidify the offense.
A second Euro is risky, but he's dropped quite a bit and is nice value.

In response to Reply # 2

Yes, they need a perimeter defender but I'm hoping one will fall to the Clips second pick. This pick is a risk since Splitter could pull out of the draft but he is a first round talent in the second round so the Clip joint will take a risk. He's an athletic big man that is a great complement to Captain Kaveman and Brand.

While Denham Brown seemed to be the fan choice at this point. Blalock does everything that Calderon couldn't do this year.

Strong passer quick on offense AND defense, he's a guy that could fit with Mitchell and Colangelo's intents respectively.

With whatever free agency moves we pull he could be a strong backup to who ever we get in the staring spot, provide good minutes of relief with a strong tempo running the court w/ Charlie, Bosh & LaMarcus.

its the choice they have to make since they cant get a pg that early and Bargiani would be bosh or charlie 2.

Tyrus wouldnt have a spot.

L.A. has the chance of being a good solid center.

But i still argue that it looks like he walks on stilts, is soft, and will never be a star.

he's not quite ready now either. he clearly out-athleticized the field, and (as had been repeated over and over) thats not going to be nearly as true with the big boys, especially with his size. and, of course, his statement games came with big baby doing major portions of the hard work (he didn't play at all up against aldridge, and though buckman and williams aren't exactly slouches, they clearly fall into the stalled talent file). he's going to need some serious coaching, and chicago has some issues with large-ones development.

still, best pick.

I'm not expecting much out of him right away.....flashes of brilliance though....and truthfully I see him as an upgrade to Chandler who is up on his contract next year and I don't see a need to keep him. So in two years...

But i guess best player available has to fall into this equation for minnesota.. ideally a swap with the celtics and/or houston would work better in there favor so they can grab the PG they need or maybe just take Randy Foye right here with this pick

And having McCants or Roy (probably McCants) start on the bench with Davis at the 3 in a small lineup. If things with McCants work out, Davis could be traded next season, as 07-08 will be the final year of his contract.

I just didn't want to pass on someone like Roy who can contribute right away. Also, if we have guys who can contribute NOW, KG might be inclined to stay.

Overall I think he might have the same type of career as Emeka Okafor, both barring injuries. He will be able to contribute to any team right away, and will have a long and productive career. He just won't ever be a superstar.

Out of those top 6 teams, I actually think Roy would fit the best in Toronto. That's why I think they should try and trade down to Atlanta's spot, condsidering Atlanta's GM, and try to get either Roy or Foye (excellent rhyme on my part).

So we need a 2 guard way more than a swingman, unless they can shoot or attack like Gay. That's why we're probably gonna look at Reddick pretty hard coming into the Draft.

Hes athletic, but even at Memphis he never really took over a game.

If we need anything at the 2/3 its a shooter and thats not Carney.

and 8 imo is too high to take reddick when we can get a guy like gansey inthe 2nd rd

Swift right now is that bad and Van Gundy doesnt trust him.,

Juwan and Dikembe are on the way out, might as well stock up on Bigs.

had he come out last year, he would be considered behind Paul, Felton, Deron, and Jarrett Jack. On top of that, I don't see him being any faster than Deron, who had question marks about his speed defensively and hasn't proved anyone wrong. Not to mention, ya'll got rid of a faster pure point guard in Marcus Banks. I don't know Soulhonky. Just my opinion...but I'm not feeling the pick for ya'll.

Ideally, I would have traded down with New Orleans and grabbed a couple of players that could help but nobody was biting.

None of the big men interest me all that much and Rondo is Banks with a worse shot IMO, so if we washed Banks out (which I think we will regret after this season) I can't imagine Rajon doing much better. Foye was an option but he's not a true point. Sergio Rodriguez didn't impress me in the extremely limited clips I've seen.

No right hand, not very good at running the offense, not great on-ball defense, has trouble protecting the ball in crunch time.

He is a good combo guard off the bench but I just don't see him running a contending team.

I guess. At best, he'll be a solid pro and I guess that's all you can ask of a player. and maybe the rule changes will benefit his game. I still don't think it's a good pick for the celtics.

Id take him infront of Deron and Jack, but no doubt I believe he has the potential to be at Felton and Pauls level.

His game is suited for Nba style, he has the ability to get by his defender and his size is very desirable for a pg. JUst look how he carried conneticut throught the ending of the season and in the tourny.

I guess the Warriors should keep trying to establish that post presence lol... diogu, biedris, and murphy and now bryant...

there is a need for a starting SF as well and rodney carney might be a good fit... how good he will be im not sure....

Not sure if he's the new Kandiman or not but Biedrins is more known for his defense and O'Bryant for his defense. They should be a good tandem at the C spot. Diogu is the heir apparent at the 4. My guess is they try to move Murphy, Dunleavy, or Pietrus for a SF.

Raef, the 7, and Tony Allen for Troy and Derek Fisher?

They grab O'Bryant and Carney in the draft?

They need a proven commodity, because they have plenty of raw talent. He's not much taller and not much different than some of the 6'9 forwards they have.

Either way, this makes sense. The frenchman they picked in the 2nd round is coming over next season (and they have Damien Wilkins) so this makes sense.

Watson/Ridnour
Allen/Wilkins/Gelabale
Lewis/Carney
Wilcox/Collison
Swift/Petro

Personally, I think they should move Allen to Chicago for young guys and try to get a SF in return of Lewis. They will have a very nice young core.

The Hornets already have two SG's who can't play defense (JR and Arvydas) who aren't getting minutes on Byron. I also would have rolled the dice with one of the big men and risked not getting Redick rather than the other way around.

the Hornets pick again in 3 picks, I prefer to roll the dice with that pick rather than this one. The chance of JJ being gone by 15 far higher than it is at pick 12

Let's be realistic. Nobody wants Kwame. As solid as Kwame played the second half of the season, he still has to prove he's worth the money that was given to him. with Mihm, he's in his last year and we need to get something for him. You pick up duhon to start at the point ahead of Smush. He's not much of a shooter, but he's a better defender. then we get the shotblocker/rebounder who has quick ups. legit 6'10" with long arms. He can play with Kwame or play the 5 with turiaf at 4.

>but simmons is nice though....there's another player like him
>that I think if we do stay where we are in the draft we might

I think I know who you're talking about. He's cool but there is a swing that I'd like to get ahead of him though.

true...but I think we could gets some value for him....not as much as for Mihm maybe..but enough to package with someone and get a servicable player....

I'm no expert..but the level stone-hands that Kwame has right now..I'm not sure if he could be coached up on that ya know.....It's that bad...

The main reason we don't have to really break ourselves to get a 4 is because I think Rony showed that in the right line up...he can be a very valuable 4 for us...in a perfect world..if Kwame had hands and finishing ability...he and Rony would be the perfect 4,5 combo....but Mihm and Rony would be a nice duo also...very nice.

I would only have him playing the 5 for a defensive presence anyway. It wouldn't require him to post anybody up. At 4 he would be a help defender and have to work on his face up game. Kwame would be the post player.

In response to Reply # 3

The Cavs don't need a ballhandler as desperately as they needs a lights-out outside shooter, because realistically no matter who the "point guard" is, Lebron will be running the offense in his way. The PG won't be making the most passes, Lebron will. And Lebron showed this season that he really needs someone to pass to after he penetrates that will drain those 3s.

Not to mention that Rondo played like ass about 85% of the season. And Rondo's defense really isn't that much better than Douby's, Rondo is just quicker, but as many quick players in the NBA have shown, quickness doesn't necessarily mean good defense.

He isn't really what the Cavs need. He simply can't shoot and the Cavs need a guy who can knock down jumpers and feed off of 'Bron's drive and dishes.

Nobody is capable of running the team and making plays besides Lebron. This isn't necessarily something the team doesn't need it's something that hasn't been an option. Alot of people criticized Brown of not coaching (preplayoffs) and letting Lebron just run the team on instict. Well With Rondo we have another playmaker who will eventually open up the playbooks and help us build options. And his defense is significantly better. With Rondo we will have the perimeters locked down, much like we did to the Pistons throughout that series only to a greater level. It's going to force a dangerous bombing team like Miami to lower their 3 point attempts and put more pressure on Wade to make it happen.

As I originally stated we do need a pure shooter, but thats another move. Rondo is too significant a pick to pass up.

We have *something* you'd want really bad. But I hear you. He's the franchise at this point and Cleveland is still drooling over him probably more than just about any player in the league.

He by far is one of the classiest ball players in the league and fills that much needed void we our missing from a skilled shooter.

In response to Reply # 15

I'm still pissed he resigned last year. There was a strong buzz around town that he was coming close to home.

But yeah at this point without moves you have a better shot at Greg Oden then we do. As a matter of fact we have just about no chance. Although it would be good for the league to put Oden & Lebron together for a few years.

In response to Reply # 8
Mon Jun-05-06 06:38 PM by SoulHonky

Right now, trade checkers won't allow deals that don't match in salary despite the fact that teams like the Bulls or Raptors can take back more contracts than they give. Also, some deals wait until the BYC wears out on certain players.

I'd say no players just to make is easier. But including players makes it more realistic and fun.

Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, New Orleans, and Seattle will all be under the cap enough to trade for Maggette without giving anyone up.

New Orleans could definitely take on a move like this but it would be interesting to see him in Seattle.

Unless they were trying to move Lewis in a different deal. They will likely spend their money on Wilcox and not try to go to far over the salary cap.

Injuries aside, is he good enought to be drafted and play in the NBA? several mock drafts list Mac as a late 2nd rounder while others do not mention him at all. I think that once he is healthy, he could play in the NBA if on the right team. With his shooting ability he could be a Paxson, S. Kerr type if he plays with a LeBron, Kobe type player. And, at the worst an Eric Piatkowski who only god knows why is still in the league.

his stock isnt as high. Had memphis reached the final 4, we might be discussing him instead of tyrus thomas.

if pacers got gibson and shawne, that would be a solid ass draft.
