okay, Zidane wins or draws, they go through

Zidane loses and,

Croatia win - Zidane out
England win - Zidane out
other game's a draw - a vicious circle down to goal difference

my biased prediction -
France find their form and beat the Swiss
Croatia teach England a lesson

end this Rooney 'worth 50 million' nonsense

He has to stop hoggin the ball and let henry do this thing from the left wing....where he and Pires have great chemistry....Zidane is fucking everywhere.....and you know he has to get the ball if he calls it...no matter how many defenders he has.....Zidane is the best player on the France squad..but the team would be way better if Henry got the ball and put the fear on the defenders......What y'all think??

I think success on this tournament is based on geeting your creators to make life easier for everyone else. The talent level is so high across the board that very few players will have the op to burn others on their own. Based on that, the logic seems to be that the ball needs to go to Zidane so he can create chances for everyone else.Henry included......is he doing that?questionable, but when he gets into that mindset and rythm...it's over.

but is it just me or could ronaldo be even more effectively as a central striker, a la henry? i mean...he's tall and can really get up...he could work on his heading, but he gets his head to a lot of crosses, and he attacks it..if he just hit the weights, he'd be crazy...he's a great dribbler, but his crosses arent the best...i think this may be the way to go with him in the next year or two..i could see him partnering van nistelrooy or saha to offer a switch up top for man u. anyway...just an observation.

In response to Reply # 9

Both need a little maturing in my estimation, but in the end they're different types of players and will serve different roles... but both can go on to greatness. With that, I must point out that you almost NEVER hear of an English superstar being requested overseas (at least I don't), but a Portugese player would be more used as a journeyman. For example, I could never see Rooney at, say, AC Milan, but I could easily see Ronaldo over in Italy or Spain or something.

You know, should Man Yoo let him loose.

Ronaldo all day.......even with all his party tricks the dude already has a creator's sensibilities, watch out when he has really learnt to read the game.it will be over. Rooney on the other hand is a good player but relies too much on his physicality.

- Zidane scores
- Silvestre gift-wraps a goal (perfect track record there, Mika...3 for 3)
- Henry plays like absolute shit

Oh, yes. We've seen a few good crosses from France (of course, Silvestre is playing center-back). That's new. Now if Henry could stop pissing them away, we'd be fine.

I'm mighty pissed off, if you can't tell.

Man, that's the very least he could do

He barely broke even on this game.
Let me remind you this was Switzerland. He's lucky Trezeguet played even shittier than him today, or else he would've been subbed...

I'm impressed with Saha, on the other hand. He needs to stay.

seriously...Beckham might be a pretty boy, he might have a Miss Piggy looking wife, he might cheat on said Miss Piggy looking wife, he might be the dullest futbol interviewee ever (and it's a domain where the competition is fierce)...but doing nothing on the field he is not. Whether with England or with Real.

The difference now is that he's playing in a much more defensive role as before, which both of these teams (England and Real) sorely need, and he's doing a great job at it, but that means he's not going to have as many flashy plays as before.

As for being the captain...who should it be? Phil Neville?
(bwahahahahaha)

Seriously, I don't see why he shouldn't be the captain.

First post, English, I got this one;

Basically, Beckham is an above-average player who has bagged the captaincy because he's the nearest we've ever had to the saintly Bobby Moore, who was skipper in '66. There have been many England players who have been more talented than Beckham, but they've always been flawed by injury, alcoholism, or straight-up ugliness. I've been scratching my head trying to think of an American equivilent of being captain of England, and all I can come up with is a pile of dead skin on me keyboard. Suffice to say, it's a very important title.

To anyone outside of England who wonders why we're so enamoured of someone who has severe difficulty in stringing a sentence together - we don't have a tradition of flamboyant sportspersons. We actually like them to be humble, straightforward and nice. We value Frank Bruno over Prince Naz, because the former was endearingly bumbling and the latter was too arrogant, professional and, well, American for our liking.

Did you hear that a British TV show about the most important Black people in the country had Beckham as #1, incidentally?

You're too, too kind, Sir.

Beckham has a habit of popping up in the right place at the right time. The free-kick against Greece that put us into the 2002 World Cup, and the penalty against Argentina (the team that turned him into the most hated man in England in '98) spring to mind. He also happens to be the captain in an era when England are finally doing something about slaying their demons, ie, Germany and Argentina. As someone who has been an England fan in an era when England have done precisely sod all, I can't begin to tell you how important this is. As I write, England are in the final 8 of the most open football tournament in years, and I have this horrible feeling that we could win it.

However, he also has a reputation of choking when it counts, too. The girly kick in the Argentina game in '98, and pussying out of a tackle that led to the winning goal in the Brazil game of '02 are the two obvious examples that spring to mind.

But the main thing about Beckham is how he handles his business off the field, which is in a very professional, calculating, and (I have to say this, and I don't mean it in an insulting way) American manner. When Beckham gets his hair cut, you will see hundreds of people rocking the same style the next day. When he had his D'Angelo braids, loads of people who should have known better did the same thing.

Eus, I kid you not;

http://www.guardian.co.uk/tv_and_radio/story/0,3604,943063,00.html

As for Gazza...he was the absolute epitome of Englishness. When he burst into tears during the 1990 World Cup semis (when he got booked and realised he wasn't going to play in the final if we won) he instantly became a legend. Naturally, like virtually all our favourite sport stars, he pissed it up the wall. He is now bankrupt and sleeps on the sofa at his best friend's house above a chip shop in Gateshead, according to the media.

Beckham - who we'd like to be
Gazza - who we really are.

- is rooney worth 70mill now ?
- the english defense from set pieces need to be improved
- owen needs to score badly !!!
- the midfield(barring any injuries/suspensions) should stay the same for the rest of the tournament

no player is worth that - he's stormed onto the scene - wait till next year when teams try to mark him out of games - if he's still rinsing it then I'll herald a bank breaker - Chelsea would probo pay that though!

>- the english defense from set pieces need to be improved

Perhaps - But John Terry just isn't match sharp - he should have cleared that for the first goal. Plus Croatia have a huge height advantage.

>- owen needs to score badly !!!

Damn right - that dink over the keeper would have sorted hime out a treat - great idea though. Look at Scholes - after he scored he was like a dog with two dicks...

>- the midfield(barring any injuries/suspensions) should stay
>the same for the rest of the tournament - I fully agree.

is still not worth 70 mil, not even 50 mil. He did have a good game today, but he needs to remain consistant, I'm starting to worry about owen, he didn't do a damn thing in this game. Also beckham, as the commentators stated, he was pretty quite in this game and pretty quite throughout the whole competition. Now they got Portugal next, this one is hard to call. If England play like they did today, then they might pull it off, BUT they are playing the Host Nation, and the "golden generation" NEED to prove something, because lately I haven't seen shit.

despite the intense concentration of desire for England to lose, in the pub I was in (and any pub in Scotland), you could see England deserved it in the end. And watching the highlights Rooney was oustanding in all areas of play.

However

IT WILL BE ALL THE MORE SWEET WHEN PORTUGAL'S WINGERS TEAR THEM TO SHREDS

last night

france didnt convince me again, to be honest they are very lucky to be playing greece in the last 8, that should be another game they can get through without too much distress but they really need to sort something out because they arent winning this thing playing like this. they changed the system to play the way the players wanted (basically zidane 'in the hole' and pires left) with no great effect on the quality of the play. saha did well when he came on and should maybe start the qf. and is it part of silvestre's contract or something that he has to give away a goal every match ? whats wrong with gallas in the middle exactly ?

the other game i seriously dont want to talk about but if they win this whole thing i have to leave the country - im not joking

tonight

please let the scandis draw 2-2. it is so funny to hear the italians talk about match fixing and corruption. oh the irony is killing me, sort out your own stinking league first fellas (and then we can discuss how mussolini won the 1934 world cup if you wish). can you believe an italian tv crew has been allowed to put an extra camera behind each goal to spot any wrongdoing ?

that is one fucked up country, if they just played like they did for an hour against sweden all the time they would walk this thing

PD: I sympathise with you on your fears of an impending England win. When England won the Rugby World Cup, the resulting hysteria made me worry about what would happen if we won something at football...

As much as I'd love to see it, Sweden and Denmark are not going to throw the game. So many people have betted on a 2-2 result that the bookies have slashed the odds from 16-1 to 5-1.

And I'll shed no tears if Italy go out, as they have flattered to decieve for 22 years. During the first games, you're desperate for them to display the skill you know they're capable of. A week later and you're desperate to see them get knocked out by the Peoples Republic of Macaroon, or some other minnow.

i dunno man

i used to love the azzurri probly more than any team other than my own, this may have more to do with roby baggio than anything else and that 'catenaccio' thing just worked for me, plus the fact it really seemed to matter to the whole country, historically they have just been one of the great teams

theyve always talked nonsense but they seem to be surpassing themselves this year. i really want them to win 5-0 tonight and still go out (even tho they are my prediction for winners) lets see them try and get uefa to change the result or something

my experiences watching wales in the san siro last september kind of soured my attitude towards them too but thats a whole nother post

so yeah, forza scandis

the transfer thread has disappeared so this goes here

Joan Laporta, the president of Barcelona, gave a strong indication yesterday that the club have agreed terms with Henrik Larsson, a free agent after leaving Celtic

"Larsson needs to finish the championship because he is playing very well and we don't want to disturb him," Laporta said in Lisbon.

"But he knows that the offer will be waiting for him. We're interested in him. We know that he's a player with experience. The offer maybe for two years."

and I would've said the same thing (and if it'd been France too). I've seen plenty of games where a team passes the ball from player to player, refusing any possible danger, but for both teams to just wait it out... It didn't change my mind that this was an insanely competitive game, and a great one at that, but that was wack.
Anyway fuck that, let's Go Sweeeeeden !!!

Devoted die hard italian, I've never seen italy play as bad as they did this tournament, and in a sense they did not really deserve to advance, however, Italy playing at its worst is still better than many teams (excluding the obvious dominant teams). If anyone here read the italian newspapers, the articles and interviews with sweden and denmark had fix written all over it, and the way they overly celebrated together after that "surprise" ending was disgraceful. You can say what you will about our italian conspiracy theories, especially going back to the last world cup, but no one mentions the fact that 5 months after that match, the same ref that the italians accused of calling the match against them was banned from soccer for life for fixing matches in south america. As beautiful as this sport is, the politics and money surrounding it tarnishes it beyond belief.

Putting a positive to these disgraceful happenings, at least Trap is gone, and hopefully we won't see anymore useless long balls that do not take advantage of the talented azurri squad

I've had to suffer through Trap for a few years now, and you will never be able to convince me that this team wouldn't play 10x better under someone else, he obviously cannot control how well his players play on a given day, but to have so many great players, and what many call one of the best, if not the best defense in teh world, with Totti, Del Piero, Vieri, Cassano, Di Vaio... Trap never had a clue as to how to utilize these weapons, an example of a stubborn coach with old success not willing to make the changes he needed to make for his team to win, in the world cup and now the euros

I'm a devastated Italy fan, but the silver lining from this tournament that i'm forced to take is that maybe this result will change the team's philosophy in upcoming tournaments, so that there aren't games like the tie against Sweden or situations in which we had to depend on other teams to make up for our shortcomings. As much as it hurts to say it, Italy has no one to blame for this but themselves, it should not take a stoppage time goal over Bulgaria to put them through, because they should have had that shit locked up a long time ago...

Italy were gone in the first game when Totti completely lost it, tried to take a Danish bloke's leg off, and then gobbed in someone else's face. And even if UEFA didn't have this ridiculous format for splitting teams, they would have still been third on goal difference.

Although having lost money on a bet for an Italy - France final, I haven't laughed so hard at the end of a match since England-France (mainly because I'd been smoking all night and just knew that France would win). When Sweden made it 2-2, I said to my mate "Imagine if Italy score now and think they've qualified...wouldn't that be hilarious?" 10 seconds later, they do. And it was. No disrespect, but it's always a pleasure to see a big team fall on their arse when it's not one of yours. God, I love Football...

I'm now off to the 24-hour Tescos to panic-buy Italian tomatoes, seeing as there won't be many left when the Azurri arrive at the airport...

going to happen when France lose. It seems as though a lot of people are happy that Italy took off. Unfortunately I wasn't able to watch any of the games tonight since I had to attend class, so I can't comment on the whole "fix" thing, but it does seem to be a case of bad luck for the Italians, I mean 2-2, what are the odds! But it happened and now the only team that I can root for now is England since all the other teams got beat. Although I would like to see the Czechs do some more damage.

I'm pretty neutral for most teams; I just like to watch some good football. The teams I was rooting for were Spain and Italy. I like England (I got a couple of English friends so I'm guilty by association) but Spain and Italy are my main ones. If it came down to it, I would choose Spain. Holland, Germany, Portugal etc. I really don't care, when I saw the Holland vs. czhec republic game, I cheered for every single goal, it was a hell of a game. I guess the only team I really want to see lose is france.

i've never been more dissapointed for a team, especially after seeing cassano go from elation to dejection after he learned that his game winning goal was ultimately worthless. hopefully the italian fa will hire a manager who will go into these tournaments with the attitude that they must win games. they have the players to do it. it's scandalous that they've gone out this early.

peace,

first Holland-Czech Republic, now this

of course, it's comedy to me, because I'm not Italian, but when you think about it...this team has been tragically unlucky in all the tournaments they participated in for a long, long time now.

1990 WC lost on penalty kicks in the semis
1992 EC not qualified
1994 WC lost on penalty kicks in the final
1996 EC eliminated in the first stage, with a missed penalty in the last game against Germany (a win would have qualified them)
1998 WC lost on penalty kicks in the quarters
2000 EC lost in overtime in the final (BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...ahem...sorry)
2002 WC got robbed (I can't remember the specifics exactly, but I know they got robbed)
2004 EC the Scandinavian debacle

It's crazy. The futbol Gods are making them pay, I guess, for the countless foul ways their clubs used to win so many games in European club cups over the years. Either that, or for being on that juice in 82 when they won it all, I don't know. But if I was Italian...I would seriously consider getting interested in another sport right about now. Like volley ball or something. I know they're successful at that.

I think it was Golden Goal as well. And Korea got a questionable penalty I think.

In Euro 2000 and WC 98 they got knocked out by the winners (France)

but somehow I don't feel sorry for them.

They're usually pretty boring to watch. Cavanno is amazing (much better than Totti) and Zombrotti, but everyone else was pretty uninspired or kept squandering chances.

Sweden and Denmark on the other hand are responsible for some of the best goals and play of the tournament, I'm pleased they're both through.

It was highly questionable for Totti to get sent off for diving in extra-time, but there was no robbery there... Vieri scored in the 18th minute and the Italians tried to sit on the 1-0 lead for the duration and the plan backfired.

Well, when you get a player sent off in extra-time when there should have been a penalty kick (now I remember)...this is called a robbery. Unless you're rooting for the other team of course...

>Vieri scored in the 18th minute and the Italians tried to

That's how they do, and I agree it's sweet when it does backfire. But in that particular instance, they actually created a few more opportunities to bury the game (Vieri missed an open shot, if I remember right).

well, it was a questionable yellow (on Totti) but it was most definitely not a penalty kick.

Vieri missed an open shot in like the 89th minute but Korea had multiple chances as well after they equalized.

i've watched that match probably like 35 times since June '02, and what i'm trying to get at is, although the Totti send-off in extra time is debatable, overall, Korea deserved to win. I take umbrage to those who think Italy was robbed... even an Italian player (which one I forget) was quoted afterward saying, "we lost to a bunch of gnomes" ... i'm just trying to get my squad some respect

I enjoy their game, too. As far as that Italian player's comment...I think we all agree it was plain retarded. As were all the reactions towards the Korean guy who played in the calcio at the time (sorry I forgot his name).

As for them deserving to win, I would probably agree with that too. But if you want to be honest, you have to admit they benefitted from "homefield refereeing" in that game (as well as against Spain). It's something that happens regularly, but it was particularly blatant in 2002. That's why Italians have at least a little bit of ground to stand on when they say they were robbed. Of course, you can retort they should stop whining like little bitches because it's just another part of the game you have to deal with (and they should know about it by now).

The fact remains...they've been under a black cloud for a long, long time now.

taken from CNNSI: (After portugal defeated Spain) "The performance, many said, demonstrated the qualities the Portuguese want to see in themselves: determination, self-esteem and fearlessness.
Cities, towns and villages exploded with joy after the game. The streets filled with cars honking horns. Men, women and small children waved flags and cheered until after midnight."

In a country full of fear of losing jobs and the extreme economic depression it suffered, soccer gives the fans something to take their minds off of their other worries. People who might not have the quality of life that we have are able to celebrate what they do have in their life, soccer. Its truly awesome.

I don't have the exact data so I might be talking out of my ass, but I'm willing to bet two things:

- employment level in Portugal right now isn't worse than it is in the U.S.
- there are less people under the poverty threshold in Portugal than there are in the U.S.

I mean, soccer is cute and all, but cut the patronizing bullshit.

the way soccer is followed in europe gives it a much bigger impact on peoples lives. The fact is that sports give people a chance to get away from all their natural shit especially considering portugal is the poorest country in the Eu with Portugal having unemployment rates of 7 percent (US has 5.7 percent), and suffering through their largest economic depression. I was just trying to show how soccer can turn a whole country from fear to joy, thats all man.

I actually think England will pull it off, and in a wierd way I think the loss to France might be an asset in the sense that now they know they can come back strong from a heart wrenching loss. It's one thing to have the bollocks to come back,it's quite another to know you have the bollocks.I think "calamities" strengthen teams and now I see an English team that is more together and more detrmined.

this attitude is starting to piss me off.
i can't stand this whole 'i love this tournament cuz the smaller countries that litter the world cup aren't there'
'all i wanna see are the european superpowers' nonsense.

if these primadonnas can't get it together and play as a team they simply do not deserve to go through to the next round.

SWEDEN AND DENMARK PLAYED FAR BETTER FOOTBALL THAN ITALY DID AND THAT'S WHY THEY'RE THROUGH

smaller teams rising to the occasion is what the world cup and european cup is all about.
if france or holland or germany or italy or spain or portugal can't make it past the first round that doesn't make it a bad tournament.
how many france-italy, germany-holland finals do u wanna see?

enjoy the football cuz it's top class and don't whine about "smaller" countries!

I hear a lot of folks say the Euro is actually harder to win than the World Cup because the concentration of top notch teams is higher...

I think it's garbage. Even if I bought that argument, which I'm not sure I do (a team like Senegal could whoop a lot of ass in this Euro), it completely disregards other factors that you have to adjust to to win a world cup as, for instance, being on a different continent (and the only team who was able to do it historically is Brazil...not any European team).

But more importantly...I don't even give a fuck if it's harder to win. It still does not provide the same level of satisfaction when you do win. I mean, the 2000 Euro was great and all, especially the way we beat Italy in the final, but it had nothing on 98. And even if we win this year, I won't be phased until we take back what's ours in 2006 (yes, I said it).

Rudd should have had a penalty, and the game should have gone to 3-1. I would have been convinced it was a Czech win if they battled back from that scoreline. But instead the ref didn't call shit.

When it comes to country, there's very few I actually feel a strong "rivalry" towards. I just crack up every time Afrobongo does his Germany-bashing, nothing personal at all. And it certainly isn't cultural, no one on the Soccer board's like that.

Trust me, when I start posting about Chelsea... that's when the real venom starts flying in my direction.

See y'all in August.

it seemed like they were handing it to the germans.....then i felt shame for doubting the team playing the most inspired football of the tournament.
u gotta gome to play when u're facing the czechs. i don't think they'll be flawless in the knockout stages but they will certainly be THE force to be reckoned with.

afro's post (#141) had me laughing so hard

i was watching it taped and someone who knew the result was with me. after baros scored he was like 'u're in for a surprise' so i was so worried that the germans were come back outta nowhere.
i hate it when ppl mess wit me like that but he was forgiven because of my elated state.

repeat, ENGLAND ARE NOT GOING TO BEAT PORTUGAL.

Peace

To laugh often and much,
to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children,
to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends,
to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others,
to leave the world a bit better,
whether by a healthy child, or a garden patch...

another hard one to call, I really want england to win, and after they lost to france they have been playing some pretty good football, not excellent but it's allright. Portugal have a good squad but I haven't seen much from them, although playing in their home country has to give them some sort of a boost. It's hard, but I think england might pull it off since they have more momentum on their side, I think it might be 2-1 england.

late pass for this one as I just read the post:

i like the fact that there's a "soccer" post this large on the site, but all the german bashing is f-cking stupid. Obviously my opinion is biased since I'm a fan, but who ever said they had a good team or had any hope of winning? Hell, they were lucky to even qualify...so it came as no shock to me to see them lose (gotta root for the czechs now...most impressive team of the tournament so far). I didn't see anyone calling for Netherland's head even though they have a much better team filled with idiot stars who like to bring up WWII EVERY single time they play germany. Saying stupid shit like "I want to kill germans" in incorrect russian is just dumb and has no place here. Oli Kahn and Ballack aren't true talent? Kahn has been one of the best goalies in the world for a good while now (he's old now, but I don't think he did a bad job) and there's no way you can tell me Ballack is untalented if you've ever actually seen him play.

yeah i caved in and bought it.

half time thoughts:

the goal was luck. jorge andrade shouldve called costinha off, or costinha shouldnt have gone for it if he wasnt going to head it firmly..disastrous.

rooney hurt...that sucks...but vassell's worked hard since he's come on..and he's fast too, so u dont lose much in terms of speed..but he doesnt have the killer instinct in front.

beckham is playing soo centrally...i find it funny for some reason..gerrard is the boss...he is running everywhere..he's killin shit..too bad he has the yellow..i could see him getting a red before the game's over if he isnt very careful.

maniche looked dangerous early. he's quited down though

deco has been a bit off..he might come back with a vengeance in the 2nd. figo has been doing okay, but he and deco's free kicks have been horrible.

ronaldo should play on the left..he can exploit beckham and neville's relative lack of speed..cole can at least match ronaldo for speed...and he has experience against ronaldo (not that neville doesnt but...)

somehow i think portugal need a 2nd striker...if it stays like this, costinha or maniche or even one of the central defenders could come off late for someone...postiga i guess.

but i think portugal will put a lot of pressure on england, a la france..and i fear that england will start to do what they did in that game, and just punt the ball up the field instead of trying to really play. and eventually they'll cave and portugal will score.

it'll be interesting. sol campbell is a beast.

certain positions and certain players dont need to be especially fast or quick. just like in any of the american sports im thinking about. larry bird wasnt very fast or quick...but he was successful..if ur smart, have guile, and skill, u can compensate for a lack of speed.

but id argue that if u can do something just as well, with skill and intelligence, if u can do it faster it makes it even better or more successful. thats all.

yes his replacement scored a goal. but anyone could have headed that in. i hardlly think taking Figo out is the reason they scored.

yes Figo's old and slower. yes he was tired as shit. but he's still one of the best players on the pitch, even in the 80th minute or whatever it was. pure irony that RIGHT AFTER Figo rips a shot to the lower corner that almost went in, the coach pulled him out.

Figo is a player maker. he's a leader. you don't take him out.

never make your star player shoot. If you do, do not put him first, or last.

Maradona, Platini, Baggio...
but Becks got two misses in two tries in this Euro. That's a little sissified of him.

To laugh often and much,
to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children,
to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends,
to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others,
to leave the world a bit better,
whether by a healthy child, or a garden patch...
to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.
This is to have suceeded...
