"Call Me Stupid but Reggie Bush should not be a top 20 pick...."

maybe not even a first round. He will not be an everydown back in the League...not denying his skills cause dude is nice...but i dont think it will translate...unless you want to waste your first round pick on a return specialist/3rd down back.

Prediction: reggies bush is the second coming of eric metcalf....

he really is going to have to put on some weight...like i said i am not denying his skills..and once he hits the open field it over...but there is more speed in the nfl, and he will be hard pressed to run between the tackles...his best bet will be getting outside..which wont be as easy at the pro level.

Edgerrin James 6-0 214
Tiki Barber 5-10 200
Clinton Portis 5-11 212

also most the other top 10 rushers are 5-10 220 which is a weight he can get up to like LT, Rudi, Willis, and Dunn as stated before... so the size excuse isn't one

And I know good in college doesn't automatically mean good in the pros (there are busts in every sport), I don't see his size as limiting him. It will be interesting to see who gets him and if they use him on special teams (I see no reason why a stud player cn't be used on special teams). But I guess we'll never know until he steps on an NFL field.

I dont think 6' 210 or whatever he is will hurt his pro career, he can add a little weight and plenty of guys that size have thrived at RB in the NFL.

okay, you're stupid. reggie bush is a can't-miss player. size has nothing to do with it. a great back is a great back, period. you cats get too caught up in size. other than thursday's game, where exactly has ron dayne tore up the league. how about jamaal lewis this season? c'mon man, you gotta bring a better reason not to draft bush than this.

but this theory is stupid if you're basing this all off of his size.

The dude bulked up going into this year and showed he can run between the tackles and he obviously has the speed to run outside. You can also line him up out wide like the Eagles do with Brian Westbrook on occasion. I'm sure he'll add a little more weight/strength to his frame going into the league as well.

There's been plenty of smaller running backs to have nice pro careers: Barry, Thurman, LaDanian, Tiki, Marshall, etc.

Reggie Bush will easily be one of the best players in this year's draft. Personally, I'd take him at #1. That's just my opinion though. Saying he shouldn't be taken in the first-round is, for lack of a better term (I'll just use the one you gave us), STUPID.

>so its not just one thing...i just feel like his running that
>high with that little size running into ray lewis could be
>nasty...

I don't know where you're getting this 'runs high' thing......but I've watched him every week for the past two years and trust that's not an issue. When he heads into the pile and either slips through or bounces it out, he's running so low to the ground it's hard to see him. When he's running down the sideline after he's just dicked five defenders and it's just him and some grass between him and the end zone, he's running a little taller.

The dude is a great player, an absolute can't-miss player. Don't make this more complicated than it is.

I think Vince will have a chance at QB, have a decent NFL career if he doesn't pout when things don't go his way, but Bush is top 3 material at worst. It will take Vince 2 or 3 years to reach his potential in the NFL, Bush will hit the ground running.

Hopefully Bush won't go to a team that expects him to run between the tackles like POrtis but I can easily see him putting on a couple lbs and being an every down back on a west Coast type of offense.

there's no denying Bush's talent but there are questions if he can be a every down back in the NFL seeing has how he hasn't been a every down back in college. I could see him being a Brian Westbrook-type player, a great dual threat, but can he carry a team like a Tomlinson or a Alexander?

He put up great numbers on a LOADED USC squad with Heisman QB against the less than steller defenses of the Pac-10. JJ Arrington ran for 2000 yards in the Pac-10 last year but he hasn't been nearly as effective in the NFL.

I'm not saying that Bush won't be a great NFL player, but to say that its a slam dunk is a bit of a stretch IMO.

Even if he's "just" a Brian Westbrook-type player, I think that still puts him easily in the first round (if not top 20) considering how integral Westbrook is to the Eagles offense.

he will be an every down player and a difference maker.

no, i would not give him 25 carries a game, but he would most certainly get 25 touches. (no homo).

i can't say that he runs upright because i've only seen him this last week vs. ucla and the holes were so gaping he had no need to have his shoulders lowered at the line.

he could easily murder shit in either denver or atlanta's scheme, including getting yards inside, off the stretch and cutback.

dudes that elusive RARELY take head on shots. one of my boys when i played ball was a starting d-1 receiver at less than 160lbs. and he wasn't on no sideline ish. he'd go over the middle and catch the ball in front of linebackers routinely. and they never got a clean shot because he had such body control and instincts. he ended up (long time ago), making it through next to last cuts for falcons 2 or 3 years in a row. not quite the dream, but that's significant for someone his size.

if i had bush on my squad:

put him in the backfield on first down. run/pass option.
backfield on 2nd and long: draw or screen or swing pass.
split him out on 2nd or 3rd and short as a slot WR. he will be uncoverable. defenses will commit a db to him as well as walk a lb out there to police the flat. he can still beat that, or you can give to your big back, with one less defender in the box.

3rd down back, on 3rd and long, you know the runs.

he would see the ball in all kinds of formations, and would get burn as a traditional back and a split receiver (passes, end arounds).

no way in hell i take out the most explosive player on the field for 2/3rds of available downs.

if he goes to a dumbass coach, yeah, he could get ruined.

peace & blessings,

x.

sigless for the summer, y'all.

LOL So by your logic he sucks even more then

Playing all those years and not getting to the playoffs

How many 5 year backs are out there who have playing in multiple playoff games. So all of them >>>>> Sayers huh?

Using playoff appearances to judge a running back is about the worst shit I've ever heard.

statistical achievement or postseason success. Sayers has a great highlight reel but outside of that he comes up short everywhere else. His teams sucked. The true mark of a great RB is durability and Sayers didn't have that.

IMO Terrell Davis deserves to be the HOF more than him.

Sayers could have played on but chose not to. He was beat up but it wasn't like he had to retire. The fact he is in he hall of fame after only playing 5 years should tell you all you need to know about the impact he had on the league. I don't think Reggie Bush or the team that drafts him will be mad if he had the same 5 year career Sayers had. And really, that's the bottom line for in this post.

>IMO Terrell Davis deserves to be the HOF more than him.

I'll just let that statement speak for itself.

You could have the greatest running back of all time (which Sayers may have been) and you're not going to win without the other pieces in place. They had a poor passing game most of the time Sayers played. And yet, Sayers still put up big numbers even against Defenses that were keyed on him. Too many people speak to Sayers greatness for it to not be true. Dude was a great player. And if Reggie Bush can have a career like his, he'd be far from a bust. That's all there is to say on this.

never makes the playoffs he WILL be considered bust. Sayers was just special because he was the first of his kind. Barry Sanders came along and did every thing Sayers did and MORE.

Saying Sayers "flamed out" is just some more foolish shit coming out of your mouth. If Bush has 5 years like Sayers, he's going to be considered great. If his team doesn't make the playoffs, thats going to fall on the front office and or coach more than him. What else can a RB do other than put up his numbers. Or do you want him to play DB too?

a player like Sayers before. He had some great highlights but like i've already pointed out, he didn't accomplish much in his career. With the amount of money Reggie Bush will make as a first round and possible #1 overall pick if he only has two 1000 yard seasons and his team doesn't even sniff the playoffs he will be considered a bust no matter how you slice it.

A 1,000 yard season and a playoff birth meant a lot more. 12 games to get his 1,000 yards and only 4 teams in the playoffs each year.

And don't think Sayers was the first slashing back anyone had ever seen. He was just the best they had ever seen.

Saying you "googled it" is just another way of saying you looking it up on the internet. Not that there is anything wrong with that but thanks for proving my point. 95% of the time I'm working with my own knowledge of a subject. I may look up something from time to time to confirm a thought but I don't depend on it as much as some of you so-called "experts" do on these boards. Stop acting like you had that knowledge in your back pocket. If you hadn't been looking at it, you wouldn't have know either.

as a return man. You don't think Hall was worth about 3 wins a year for the cheifs when he only returned kicks and played marginally on O? That, IMO ALONE is worth a top 20 pick.

That said, I think he might need spelling, but he should be alot more durable than say someone your opinion might apply to more aptly: Sultan Mcullugh.

i say he gets injured in his 3rd NFL game if u give this guy more then 25 carries a game

and ppl saying he can be like westbrook, well *newsflash* westbrook aint RUSHING to no victorys (only breaks 100yds maybe 2-3 times ALL yr) and only a handful of teams run west coast offenses good enough to use a talent like westbrook effectively

Bc I'd take that man on my team in a second....You can't deny his talent....So much upside....And his weight??? That can easily be fixed..Dude will get put on an intense weight-lifting plan...Its not too hard too gain 15 lbs of muscle...at 5-11-6'0 215-220 he'd be fine.....I don't know how ppl can make size an issue when dealing w/ Bush.....

Just watch the guy play...He's a gamer....And if he already has immense talent, I don't see how he could be a bust....

back then there weren't 350lb D-linemen, 250lb linebackers running 4.5, 230lb safeties. Its a different game now.

It's a different game but I wouldn't say it's a better one. Tackling is much, much worse for one thing. If we were talking about the 40s and 50s I might agree. But from the mid 60s on, players that were stars then, would have been able to play now with no problem.

When Jim Brown played he was the same size as most linemen and bigger than most linebackers. That wouldn't been the case today.

Right because quarterbacks are supposed to be able to run over people.

Jim Brown had that

Sayers Had that

OJ had that

Payton had that

Sanders had that

Dickerson had that

I could give a fuck what era they played in. I'd take any one of those backs in any era.

you can have all the talent in the world, but if you don't have great instincts or vision, you will never be that good...Great vision is what separated guys like Jim Brown, Gale Sayers, Barry Sanders, Emmitt Smith, Walter Payton, etc. from the pack....

But you're very much wrong....

First off, the average D-Lineman ain't 350...more like 300-315....The average linebacker does not run a 4.50 40....I'd love to see the real times they run bc we all know that stats are imbellished...I'd say the average speed is more like a 4.6-4.65.....The average safety doesn't avg 230...Where do you get your stats from ???? More like 215-225.....And some are smaller than that.....

Anyways....Yes, the game is different....Nowadays, Defenses aren't designed to stop the run first..Nowadays, you won't see defenses stack 8,9 guys in the box to shut down the run....Nowadays, its common to see 4 and 5 guys in the secondary.....Nowadays, Offenses are much more complex and focused on spreading out the field and defense....Nowadays, the refs are much, much more leniant on Offensive lineman and the rules of blocking...( But Im sure you already new all of this)...

Like I said earlier, to say Jim Brown would not be a dominant RB in today's era is idiotic at best...

You're full of shit. If you look at most of the top teams in the NFL RIGHT NOW their built around power running games.

Just look at passing numbers for good/great QBs back in the 60s and 70s. You'll see Star, Namath, Bradshaw, etc throwing 20 times a game or less. To say teams focus on the run now as much as they did then is so wrong it's not funny. Hell, the way the D backs are held in check with these rules today, you'd be a fool to not to think pass first.

Fuckouttahere! Joe Namath passed for 4000 yards in '67. Sonny Jurgenson threw for 3700 in '61 and '67. The passing offenses weren't a sosphisticated as they are now obviously but don't act like people didn't throw the ball.

Namath was in the AFL at the time which was known as a passing league (helped get ratings) Which is why it was much easier for them to attracted big names at QB and WR but high profile RBs stuck with the NFL

And I'm sure Jurgenson was the exception not the rule. Since you like to look shit up, go back and tell me how many attempts Star had that year. I bet you it was less than 20 a game. And while you're at it, why don't you work out the avg attempts per team and I would bet you my left arm you'd find at least half the teams lower than the bottom team today.

according to your logic thats what you're saying....Or Curtis Martin is better than Jim Brown ??!!! Bc they are dominant RB's today, and apparently JIm Brown wouldn't be in today's game....

IF you can't except the game has changed in favor of RB's I can't help you...It seems painfully obvious that you don't know much about the history of the game and how it has evolved....I don't think you realize how much more offensive players are protected in this era...Offensive lineman could never get away with the style of blocking they do these days....Defenses didn't have to worry as much about complex offenses that had multiple weapons at rb,te,wr's to spread the ball out....

Have you ever seen one of those old electric football games? Ever see the linemen? They have their hands tucked in and their elbows out for a reason. Not that cats really blocked that way but linemen weren't allowed to use their hands even a 1/4 of the way they do now.

Dudes size wont be a problem at the next level, and like everyone said there have been plenty of smaller backs who've been successful in the league. And have you seen him play? Yea dude has amazing cut back abilities, and all sorts of moves but he can run in bt the tackles and he runs with power. Im more concerned about how A. Peterson will do, hes been hurt, and he got that E. Dickerson style of runnin--standing strait up. R. Bush is the truth, just watch that Fresno State game, then no one will question him ever again.

If he was putting of those kind of numbers against SEC or even the Big-10 level competition I'd be impressed. Fresno is the toughest defense he's faced all year and their defense is ranked 31st. Like I said earlier, JJ Arrington ran for 2000 yards in the Pac-10 last year and look at him in the NFL.

So you are wrong, but probably not stupid.

I would call you stupid if you compared him to Gale Sayers like some are doing.

I wasn't saying he was the next Gale Sayers. But Truth is acting like Reggie Bush would be a bust if he had Gale Sayers career. Now that's stupid.

I dont think his lack of size will be his downfall. You say he runs high, but watching damn near every one of his games, he will move the pile and rarely ever allows himself to get hit standing up not only because of his speed but his decisiveness when running the ball. This cat will not dance with the ball, he will hit the hole inside hard and then combined with his vision, its a beautiful thing. His strength is very underrated, his legs never stop moving either once he gets inside.

B West could be an every down back if he possessed Reggie's quick decision making, both their strengths are severely underrated (but reggie is even tougher imo) and Reggie may be even shiftier allowing for him to get great angles on cats. Also, I highly doubt he runs back punts or kickoffs unless its that important of a possession or game, thus limiting the hits even more so.

His ability is cant miss imo, regardless of his size.

Vision and quickness means everything on a punt or kick-off return. The defenders are spread and you have to see holes , in some cases before they even open. Being able to anticipate like that is what makes a back special. Just throwing out someone's height and weight and then making an assessment on his talent is idiotic. Unfortunately, there are a lot of GMs out there that do just that.

Dude looks like he's playing on Heisman level and his opponents are like Yale playing on Junior Varsity. This is easily the best highlight video I've seen. 7 mins and 30 seconds of him just making people look foolish. Its also fucking crazy Alex Smith is throwing him the ball. That could be 2 straight #1 draft picks from the same Highschool.

He'd look good in the Honolulu and blue... Fuck I'd trade our last 5 years of draft picks for him

I do admit, I've felt that L. White would end up being a better pro than Bush. But to say that Bush shouldn't be in the top 20, so much, a 1st round pick is just STUPID. There is no denying this guys skill. He's able to cut on a dime and accellerate (reach top speed) faster than most players in the NFL. Does this translate to being a good pro? Only time will tell. I remember people saying the same things about Bush that they did about LT. So I guess we'll have to wait till he gets his chance in the NFL.

Don't ever open yourself up for ridicule like that by telling people right in your post title to call you stupid.

In terms of the topic at-hand, my resident NFL expert friend was questioning Bush's everydownbackability today. He's 2 in. taller than and same weight as Tiki Barber, and we all know what Warrick Dunn has done as well, so it's not a given that he won't do well. And the prospect of him falling past the first round is unlikely.

SDSU is still my favorite college team even though UCLA is my alma mater. two points: as bad as the defense in the pac-10 might be, the defenses in the old WAC were miles worse. and the new and improved reggie bush, who can now run between the tackles *much* more effectively than he could the last two seasons, is now better at it than faulk was at this stage.

marshall faulk is one of my favorite players ever, but the fact is that george jones (the cat who replaced him at SDSU) followed him up by smashing his records against the same defenses (more or less) and the same 8 and 9 man looks.

in person, probably should have been a little more specific.

But in the last let's say, 15-20 years, how many would you put above him (and let's keep it on the offensive side of the ball so we aren't comparing oranges to apples)?

Barry, Bo, Marshall, I'm drawing blanks after that.

Of course, I've also watched just about every game he played which probably skews my opinion at least a little.

Forgot about him, dude was a warrior and a great leader. And he was almost surely more important to his team, I don't know if he was a better player though.

>Jamal Lewis freshman year
I know he was bad as shit but this looks like a Tennessee thing.

>Orlando Pace
>
Definitely the best college o-lineman I've seen (I was too young to really appreciate Munoz at SC). I probably should have limited it to skill players though, because I don't know how you can compare these two.

>push:

>Peter Warrick
My favorite FSU guy ever, one of the best I've ever seen at running after the catch on the college level......but I'll take Bush without hesitation. Bush can do anything Warrick could do.....can't say the same for Warrick.

>Michael Vick
This is borderline. He did put VTech on the map. He also only played two years and lost his biggest game. Advantage: Bush.

you can't the same for Bush

before he tore his first ACL he was the second coming

Lewis was a grown-ass man when he stepped foot on Tennessee's campus - 6'0, 220 pounds with legit 4.4 speed as a true freshman

he ran for 2,000 yards *after* he tore *both* ACL's...

Speaking of UCLA, has anyone seen Warren Coolidge since Saturday? Just curious. I want to hear about Drew Olson being the best QB in college football and USC not being as explosive again.

Peter Warrick WR 5-11 195 NFL listing
Reggie Bush RB 6-0 200 College listing

Reggie should get highlights in the NFL, but the team and offense is going to be a major factor whether or not he will be a success. Plenty of players have Bush's size, but it is too early to tell if Bush will even PLAY RB in the NFL...He can be a pretty deadly receiver.

It is definately worth taking a top 20 pick, even a top 5 when you think about how many RB's AND WR's you'd pick over him with no remorse...

The teams that will be able to pick him NEED either a RB or WR anyway...Some need Jesus/Allah/Jah/Buddah/Krishna/Yahweh/Igzi'abihier*
you have the 1st pick in the NFL draft for a reason....

that being said....

San Fran will get him...

* got to be politically correct, if i missed your (God) i apologize...

being an under 6 foot wideout is a huge disadvatage in the NFL.

Gayle Sayers highlights take a look at the defenders he's juking. A lot of that cutback shit he did would get him KILLED against the athletes on defense in the NFL today.

i'm not saying they would. you can't cross-compare like
that. the point is they dominated when they were playing,
thus their effect on the game is similar. i'm saying
reggie could be THIS generation's sayers. the game has evolved
so players are bigger and faster. but when sayers was playing,
his generation of players were faster than the players before him.
get it?

what type of one-sided history argument are you making?

you're talking about taking bamas out the past and putting 'em into today's game on some time machine/leather helmet shit? the greats of the game played against the greats of their era, all under the same conditions- give jim brown modern training and nutrition and he's gonna shit on everybody JUST LIKE HE DID BACK THEN.

and what style of running are you talking about that wouldn't work today? priest holmes cut back on the 'skins about 4 times enroute to a screen pass td earlier this year

terrell davis- cut backs
denver clinton- cut backs
robert smith- cut backs
ahman green- cut backs
walter payton- cut backs

And I didn't say cutback running doesn't work today. But a lot of the shit Sayers did in the 60's and Bush does against Pac-10 defenses like running one way then reversing field and juking all 11 defenders for the touchdown simply does not happen in the the NFL on a regular basis.

In response to Reply # 221

How the fuck you think juking doesn't work today? Have you seen these cats tackle today? lol I'd say that's the one area that is worse without question. What the hell does size and speed have to do with getting juked? Where not talking about caching someone from behind or haveing the strength to bring someone down. We're talking about getting their hands on the man and wrapping up. And that's the one area most football experts agree has gone downhill. Cats looking for the big hit and not actually wrapping up for the tackle. If anything, a back like Sayers would be more effective when it comes to juking.

against these so-called fast defenses. That style of play is very much a possiblity depending on that players own ability. However, I dont think Bush is a good as barry was, but he is close.

highlights tend to represent the HIGHLIGHTS of a season/career
-anquan boldin got a reel from this year that would have you thinking he's jim brown in the form of a wide receiver

gayle sayers has a lot of crazy highlights, but he also has a legacy that STILL has historians saying "could've been the greatest ever". not a billy sims "great but cut down by injury" or barry word "great for a few years" legacy, but a "potential G.O.A.T." legacy

but ultimately, how does all this apply to reggie bush?
-if he keeps hitting holes in a similarly decisive fashion, can BLOCK and goes to a team with a decent run-blocking line and a credible WR threat, he'll enter the league balling like either '05 willie parker (floor) or '05 cadillac williams (ceiling)

What you see as porn someone else sees as Da Vinci... It's the eye of the beholder. We can only assess that. What makes your music beyond porn? Again, Eye of the Beholder.
