"Most Unbreakable Sports Record"

I'm thinking specifically of individual achievement in one of the four major sports, but you're welcome to post team-related or other remarkable sports records (Lakers' playoff sweep??)...

My vote: Joe Dimaggio's 56-game hitting streak. There's no way that will be broken.

yours?

Yeah, I think that's the one. However, there are a lot of them in baseball. Cy Young's 500 wins (I know it's more though) will never be touched. In fact, Clemens might be the last pitcher with a realistic shot at 300. Van Der Meer's back to back no-hitters should stand the test of time too. No one will ever touch Hornsby's .424 average, and I think Ty Cobb's career average is safe. Hack Wilson's 190 RBIs has not really been threatened in the last couple of decades, so that one might hold up too.

I think Wilt Chamberlain's record for points scored in a basketball game is pretty damn safe as well. I can't imagine anyone scoring 100 in a game ever.

I can't think of any others right now though. Oh yeah, Henri Richard's 11 Stanley Cups should hold up, just like Bill Russell's mark for NBA titles (forget how many).

Peace

if he had phil jackson and his teammates' blessing, i bet shaq could approach 100. imagine a meaningless regular season game against a sorry team that lacks a good defensive center, like the wizards w/ jahidi white. let shaq take a shot on every possession and he could get to 100 if he makes his foul shots.

of course, the media would prolly take out their swords and do hatchet jobs on shaq, phil and the lakers, but who cares? they did the same thing to dajuan wagner when he hit the century mark last year in high school, and it didn't seem to affect him too much.

with the right factors in place, i think wilt's 100-point record is breakable.

Sure it's breakable if someone takes all the shots for his team, but it will never happen. Phil would never let Shaq score 100, and more importantly, neither would Kobe. Also, I don't think any team would be willing to watch Shaq score 100. They would hack Shaq to death before they'd let him score 100. Think about it, what was the highest total this year? 60? Something like that. That in itself is amazing these days. We marveled when Iverson scored 54 and 52 against the Raptors, and when Vince scored 50 against the Sixers. How in the hell is someone going to score 100? I just don't see it happening. Players these days have too much attitude for it to happen. No player likes to see the other team score 100 on them, let alone one player alone. I doubt it will happen.

You also need to take into account that teams don't score nearly as much nowadays, the game has become so defensive-minded and the pace has slowed. Back when Wilt did that, teams were averaging close to 20 more points per game. peace.

Yeah, I cited both of those in my post. For the record, the mark for RBIs is 190 by Hack Wilson.

Another one I just thought of is the record for most home runs in a game by one player (which is 4). I know several players have hit 4 in a game, but I doubt anyone will ever hit 5 home runs in one game. Most of the time, they don't even get five at-bats in a game. That record is pretty safe in my opinion, considering the last man to hit 4 was Mark Whiten in the early 90s.

Joltin' Joe's 56 game hitting streak
Wilt's 100 pts (hell, I don't think anybody's gonna touch his 78 pt game, personally)
Wilt's 55 rebounds in a single game (I don't know if we'll ever see 40 in a game again)
Oscar Robertson averaging a triple-double throughout an entire season
Celtics winning eight straight titles (If Mike hadn't taken '94 off, the Bulls would've gotten it...that's as close as anybody's gonne come to it...don't tell me shit about Kobe and Shaq, either)
Gretzky's single season goal record (What is it, 85?)
Marino's 50,000+ passing yards
Walter's 16,726 rushing yds (I think Emmitt's gonna retire after this season...he's a little over 1,700 away and I think he's got about 1,350 in him, tops....I believe the next closest active back after him is Ricky Watters, he ain't touchin' it)
Allen Iverson's 42% from the field while winning the scoring title (I'm serious, that's fuckin' pathetic....Kobe and Vince Carter are about to lock up the scoring title and share it for about the next ten seasons or so)

'94 season finale against the Clippers. He scored 71 to clinch the scoring title over Shaq. David Thompson scored 73 in the Nuggets '78 season finale and lost the scoring title to George Gervin (who scored 63 later that night to clinch) in the slightest margin of difference in any scoring title ever. Those are the only two 70+ pt games in NBA history by anybody other than Wilt (who had three).

Not to nitpick but Wilson's record is actually 191. A couple of years ago they were looking through old box scores and credited him with another one.

Also, Derrick Thomas's sacks in a game record.

as the hockey guy, i gotta mention wayne gretzky's 2857 career points. second all-time is gordie howe (who played more than 25 seasons) with 1850. the truly incredible thing, though, is the assists record: 1963. compare those numbers, folks--gretz had 1963 career assists to howe's 1850 total career POINTS. if wayne gretzky had NEVER scored a single goal in his 20 years in the NHL, he'd still be the all-time points leader by 113. absolutely fucking unbreakable.

Wilt's avg of 50.4 a game won't be touched.

And UCLA's record would have been broken by now, if players didn't keep jumping to the NBA early. Back when UCLA did it, freshman weren't allowed to play.

his career K record won't be broken, and neither will Rickey Henderson's record for stolen bases in a season...i forget what the exact record is.

This isn't a record per se, but when Shaq had 60+ points and 20+ boards one game, they listed the only three to do it...
Shaq - once
Big 'E' - 2 times
Wilt - 21 goddamn times!!

That's dominating.

Since I'm a white guy, I gotta bring Rocky Marciano (white folk - tha'ts they one)

Kevin Young, 1992.

No one's really been close. Bryan Bronson ran a 47.03 in 1998.

Not that it's unbreakable. But no time soon.

For that matter, the Mike Powell might hold the long jump record as long as Bob Beamon did.

Throw in Michael Johnson's 200 and 400 records. That 200 will stand longer. Edwin Moses' record of consecutive races won will be hard to break too.

it proves nothing. That was the DUMBEST event ever. Donovan is an 100 meter, MJ is an 200, 400 man. Unless one beat the other at their strong event, no one can lay claim to the fastest man. And they are both retiring this year, I wonder whose legacy will be greater?

To continue the track theme, Mike Powell 29 feet 4 1/2 inches in the long jump at the '91 World Championships. That was unbelieveable, he beat Bob Beamon's record. In case some of yall aren't track inclined, that's almost 10 yards on a football field. I agree with the Micheal Johnson analysis, the 400 could be broken more easily than the 200. He ran the 200 in 19.32, almost .5 seconds faster than the previous owner.a

soccer to the ignorant ones.

Just Fontaines 13 goals in a single world cup (1958) is COMPLETELY TOTALLY HOPELESSLY NEVER EVER EVER going to be broken. NEVER!!!

for a player to score 6 goals in a single world cup these days makes that player a PROFICIENT goal scorer. keep in mind the amount of rules changed since then to allow for more goals in the game. the increase in the teams competing in a world cup now (32 and counting) etc. still, with all these changes, this record will never ever be broken
