it wasn't about anything but minutes. and don't say anything STUPID like "if he was so good, he would have played more minutes" because that fucking stupid. They were becoming an elite team and he provided firepower off the bench and that was his role. he had really outgrown that roll by his second year.

And no, it wasn't CLEAR. if

that's ridiculous. i took joy and pride in watching idiots tryna be friends after shitting on him because of his early NCAA exits as proof he'll be sorry in the L.

well, i could say it's too early to determine bennett's place in the league.

it don't matter. i picked blake, love, harden and kyrie after a lotta people said they'd be sorry and i said derrick williams would be trash when most of the board love him. i'm a made man, so i cuban b anything i get wrong on this board.

let's just wait for them to answer. see, it's sad we gotta depend on people's memories because this sites search technology is on some colecovision shit.

But yeah there was an overinflation of his tourney performance and a general sleeping-on phenomenon.

Personally I thought he'd be a 15-20 point guy and I didn't care about the tourney as much as him being able to make his detail-oriented game work as well in the pros. I think I said something to the effect of "There's only one Paul Pierce." Oh well. Steph still better BTW.

His game looked flaky in college because of what he had around him. Its not like his game has changed either...just seeing him doing that against 20 year olds was not convincing that he could be an elite player. It was clear that he was (is) a head case...and his play in the tournament magnified it...but its really that he is a cerebral player with an unorthodox game. I thought his ceiling was Richard Jefferson good...not MVP caliber good.

And honestly still felt that way until he went to Houston. His playoff woes were real, and they absolutely did color how people felt about his talent. I thought he'd be a good scoring machine/not a real star.

Waiters is a big contributor for a title contender. Back to back buckets with under 2 minutes left to put OKC in the lead against the Spurs, and got the offensive rebound where the shot clock didn't reset and found Westbrook in the corner for the big 3.

He would've produced anywhere, but even moreso on Philly where he's one of the few legit NBA players. He's going to score points.

Russell is less NBA ready and is playing with some actual NBA level guards that are going to have the ball a lot. I know it won't stop most from doing it, but this one's not worth second guessing for a few years at least IMO.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if Oak is ROY...he was always the most NBA ready and currently polished. On the other hand, there's going to be a learning curve for DRuss as he adjusts to this level and gets a feel for the game...he's an extremely cerebral player but once he finds that rythym, he's the type of player who can elevate the entire team with how he gets everyone involved...going to take some time bc as you said, we have guards who limit his opportunities to do so and currently, as we saw last night, much of the team aren't anticipating his passes. Other than his effort fighting over screens, I liked his game last night...he will improve exponentially.

This is an agenda post though, so context has no part in it.

i know of not ONE elite nba skill he has. i know Oak got some precocious ass ELITE footwork and touch around the basket. i mean, EVERYBODY who watched him knew that. i know if he DEVELOPS into a 65% FT shooter, he's averaging at least 22ppg for the next 12 GOTdamn years. i know he's not an "elite" rebounder, but he'll eventually average double digit boards...just a matter of effort. i know he can pass out the post.

i don't know what the fuck russell got in to toolshed, dogg.

good fucking luck with aaaaaall that shit.

In response to Reply # 30

His ability to read the game and see the floor is all-world. That's obvious to anyone who watches him, right from the jump, and it was obvious last night...three occasions where teammates did not realize a pass to them could even be made, but they will adjust as they realize you always have to be expecting a pass when he has the ball.

Secondly, his patience and understanding off the screen-roll is very, very good. He knows how to create space with his body with a man trailing on his hip and he understands when to stretch a trap and swing to create an open look or rotating.

Thirdly, and this will coincide very well with #2, he has a mid-range jumper that he can utilize to make a team pay for not trapping the PnR and eventually once bigs start getting on their toes against him, he will be able to utilize that to get to the rim.

Fourthly, his body control combined with his ball-handling allow him to get in and out of angles quickly.

What he needs to develop the most is understanding how to balance his desire to get everyone involved vs aggression. Secondly, he needs to develop a floater to finish in the lane over traffic. Thirdly, his jumper needs to be more consistent.

I agree with you Okafor, extremely skilled and I always thought the knock on his rebounding was over-blown as with the right coach, those matters of effort will be sorted out. I think he's in a great situation in Philly because of how much usage he will get in spots that are his strengths. Speaking of coaching and situation, I think D'Angelo's development is going to take longer because he's playing on a team with decent guards and a coach who plays him off the ball predominantly.

No top 5 pick in any draft, ever, should be scared of Jordan Clarkson. No disrespect to the guy, he came a long way under difficult circumstances, but he was nothing more than arguably the best player on a really, really bad roster.

Kobe is going to have the ball in his hands more than he should at this point, and Lou Williams is a pretty good, veteran guard who needs a good dose of minutes, shots, and the ball.

His strengths are on the ball and he's being relegated to off the ball...taking away from a lot of his strengths and hence development. Go ask Byron Scott why he isn't putting our best actual point guard on the ball, something I was worried about in the pre-season and said in the actual game post.

Good grief, you're playing really dumb in this thread.

When he played on the ball, particularly for the second half of last season. Or is it a new phenomenon that coaches tend to stick with players who they are not only familiar with but who played very well in a certain role for them before? Oh no, that's not possible.

This isn't a black/white situation. He's still a rookie at the most competitive position in the league and he's played exactly one game where the coach didn't let him run the point, which completely defeats the purpose of drafting him if that continues.

Expectations and learning curves are different, especially considering the current state of their respective positions

DLo was also widely considered to be more of a gamble with higher upside whereas scouts tended to be more certain of Oak having a far more certain "bottom" as a likely perennial all star who may not have the same upside as Russell.

I.e, Oak was considered more NBA ready from opening tip and Russell was considered to have more growing pains.

Frankly, I'm not surprised by either performance, especially given the, uh, coaching decisions with Russell last night. I don't think most Lakers fans with half a brain expected D to be the second coming of Westbrook or Curry right away.

I don't think it's reasonable at all to expect him to be a top shelf NBA player right away.

120 replies and growing after Game 1 and this is a "season-long" thread.

IMO big men usually take longer to develop, the instant impact guys are usually guards. The *really* dominant bigs, sure, they almost can't help but make an impact but on average the curve is steeper for a big from conditioning to strength to footwork to avoiding foul trouble.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Don't bother saying something grimy about Boat or Bazz, cuz I saw you was quiet as fuck about Ollie's 2016 class.

Now if the lakers start winning, understand that this alone gives Russell an advantage...

Are these two guys not the same age? Do bigs normally develop more slowly than guards and have less immediate impact? Are both guys not on artificial sweetener-induced anal leakage rosters? Do both not have *every* opportunity to get minutes and make an impact?

Oh no, this is legit. This is getting upped alllllll year.

>Are these two guys not the same age? Do bigs normally develop

This is a case where the big already had many of those skills that take time to develop, hence why Okafor was labeled as the most polished player in this draft...and I know you know that, stop being dense.

>Are
>both guys not on artificial sweetener-induced anal leakage
>rosters? Do both not have *every* opportunity to get minutes
>and make an impact?

Cut the BS here...our guards are much better than what ya'll have at the 5 spot. If D'Angelo had *every* opportunity to get minutes and make an impact, then why was he relegated to an off the ball role last night? You can be as disingenuous as you like but Okafor is playing in a role that he is very comfortable with and fits his strengths....D'Angelo is being asked to play off the ball which nullifies his greatest strengths.

>Oh no, this is legit. This is getting upped alllllll year.
You're the last person I expected to start making generalized statements and ignore the realities of context. Oh well, pressed gon be pressed.

There is more than ample opportunity to come in and grab all the minutes he can, even if they have a little depth.

Okafor is more polished than your average 19-year-old center for sure but one of the big pushes on Russell was also his readiness, sense, vision, blah blah blah.

The fact that people are preemptively turning away from this one says a lot.

The big push on Okafor was his high floor...there's a reason he was constantly said to be the most polished and ready to contribute right now. You can try and re-write that all you want now but that's still the case.

As far as Clarkson, call it what you will but even though he was on a bad team, he was still efficient with it and improved his game under Scott...naturally, there's going to be a strong inclination for that coach to continue to put that player in that same role. At this rate, I'd rather DRuss play with the 2nd unit and control the game there...which not only helps his game but also forces Young and Lou to play off the ball.

But I haven't even seen flashes from pre-season to now.

26/7 is real good. Even better when you see the shitty ass guard play we got last night. He will have to get used to NBA double teams to cut down on the TO's. Very impressed with his shooting range too. He can hit that 13-15 footer too.

Russell might be in for a long season. There are 3-4 other dudes on that team can handle the ball. He may not get that many touches. The pecking order is steep for him. I've seen up close what lou willz can do for a young pg's development.

Get the ball in your best play-maker's hands to initiate the offense. I know Scott has seen what Clarkson can do as a primary ball-handler so he's familiar with him but his athleticism and ability would allow for him to be really effective against rotations and as a secondary play-maker. Lou is great with the 2nd unit but again, as you alluded to, he's not trying to create for anyone else. None of what we did last night was conducive to D'Angelo's strengths and it doesn't make much sense to me....Russell is going to have a learning curve but he has some great tools, I wish we would allow him to sharpen them by playing on the ball.

Not this season, obviously. Maybe not next. But once he gets going, it's 25 per. I don't care if never crosses half court to play defense if he scores 25 per.

But btw he was far better than expected in the defensive end last night. I could only pay so much attention because I was too fucking giddy about the other end, but he looked like an average rookie defensive center. Sure, he wasn't good, but he also wasn't enes kanter either.

That's kind of a premium at the 5 spot in today's NBA. There was questions about his defensive ceiling, but I couldn't make out a consensus on that.

Nobody should be shocked when he's the best post up center in three years.

For the record I have no strong opinion on Jah either way and I'm firmly in the Russell will be a bust camp since to justify being a #2 pick point guard you pretty much need to be Steph/CP3 level good or at least a John Wall type player... and pretty much all those guys were good right away. Out of the top 10 point guards in the league how many of those guys got off to slow starts? Maybe Dragic or Bledsoe? And those guys are borderline top 10 and are way faster/stronger.

Think of who the 15th best point guard in the NBA is today - that's probably someone like Ty Lawson or Jeff Teague or something? And those are guys who on a really good day could give you 20 points and 10 dimes and win you a playoff game on their best day. Are we SURE that Russell will be up to that level? Let alone competing with the Steph's and CP3s and Westbrooks and Kyrie's that can give you that night in and night out.

He shot 41% from 3 in college and 45% overall-- and this was on a team where he was really the *only* consistent scoring option. As a freshman.

I believe Russell should be a really good player. Not as good as Jah... but then again, Jah was the consensus #1 pick going into their freshman years, so I don't think that's a slight to Russell to say he won't be as good. It'll make the bitter pill for Laker fans that they passed up Jah slightly easier to swallow when they see how good Russell will become.

But what can he do in the NBA that will open up those lanes? Like you pointed out with kendall marshall. He has more tools than Marshall but by how much?

>He shot 41% from 3 in college and 45% overall-- and this was
>on a team where he was really the *only* consistent scoring

>

The college 3 is markedly different than the pro 3 and doesnt always translate. Great you shoot 41% from 20 feet. 41% fg shooter in the NBA is mediocre. In the NBA the 20 foot jumpshot is a dinosaur. Whether you like the trend or not, people generally dont shoot it anymore. The spacing on the court is just different. Really becoming a deadly shooter will open things up for him - so hes gotta put in work there.

Most college guards don't come in and immediately shoot 40+%, especially when the entire defensive gameplan is designed to force said player to give the ball up.

His expansion of range will come with time. My guess would be sooner rather than later.

like shawn was getting at, those ~2 feet are a big difference. i never watched him in college, but so far in the pros from just watching him shoot, he doesn't strike me as a player who has a natural touch from out there. i'm sure he'll be able to knock down the open shot at a decent clip, but that's not gonna be enough. he's gotta be special, otherwise i don't see how he puts the fear in opposing defnses

So presumably I'll be mad for awhile.

I'm also mad because this reactionary shit (while fun) is also stupid as hell.

I'm mad because my Forwards in Survivor are ass and a half.

I'm mad because my job is stressing me the fuck out.

I'm mad cause Byron Scott doesn't seem to know what the hell he's doing.

I'm mad on account of the fact we may have passed up a really good player for a shot at a great one (though I agreed with the gamble).

I'm mad for a lot of reasons.

Exactly, the odds that there was another player Russell's caliber in this draft are better than the odds that there was another player Okafor's caliber.

I'm not sure who's saying Russell won't be good. I'm not in that group. However, I am unsure if Russell will end up being a better player than Okafor. I am willing to wait it out but iono man. I get the idea behind it but it would have been hard for me to pass on Okafor knowing he would have such an instant impact.

151. "My issue is that so many draft boards and mock drafts said Russell > Oka..."
In response to Reply # 0

Especially around draft time. Last year at the All American game, all you heard was Okafor, much more than Towns and Russell. Then Okafor won a NCAA championship, yet he still didn't solidify his #1 status.

There were plenty people in both camps, but because of Steph Curry's Ring run, most people were saying "it's a PG's league now" "Big slow centers are outdated and not essential to winning" "The Lakers need a PG who can run with the PGs in the West." Regardless of how slow or unathletic folks may have said Russell was, he basically got that #2 spot by default.

With that....the even bigger agenda should really be Mudiay vs Russell. And most folks would have NEVER picked Mudiay as high as a #2 or #3, and everyone said he wasn't impressive enough in China. Yet, seeing that the Lakers would be better off with a super strong PG than a pretty strong C, I still think this agenda would burn more. Especially with Hibbert appearing to be solid so far.

As for me? I feel Russell has a high ceiling overall, but will never be a dominant offensive PG, which will be fine if he can turn into a light skinned Steve Nash-lite, or even Rod Strickland.....he's surely not going to be a superstar 1.5 like Westbrook, Steph, or Iverson, though.

smh
dude wasn't even running fast and reckless like he was in those china highlights
bruh looked like a 10 yr vet the way he was manipulating defenders and setting up his teammates
most of the highlights were half courts sets too, if dude is that developed as a playmaker at this stage it might be a scary L for the lakers

(it was a highlight reel so didn't show the 11 turnovers, i'd be interested in seeing how bad they were, someone pointed out that he handles the ball high and it's something they can fix quickly)

us younger Laker fans. And the last two 1-2 picks we had were fuckin Magic and Worthy. Our other lottery picks were Eddie Jones and Bynum...and you can halfway count Kobe with that too, since he was a high pick who had never played before.

So for me...I spent so much time just researching previous drafts, and realizing that there's so many damn busts, and so many picks who were slept on, and everything inbetween. So IF Russell turns out to be anything less than a 82 rated player on 2K in his prime, then fuckit, that's what it is, but I think it's way too early to write him off, and surely too early to bitch and moan about who we could have had instead.

What's even wilder? I saw this chart about how #3 AND #4 picks have way more success than #2 picks, even when you don't include Jordan > Bowie!! This halfway scared me before we even made the pick!

190. "11/3/15 SHOWDOWN: Mudiay vs Russell"
In response to Reply # 0

This is going to be interesting.

I can say that the system Mudiay's in gives him much more free reign to do what he wants to do, whether it's for good or bad. Russell looks so stifled out there to me...80% of the time he brings the ball up, he just passes it off, and may not even get another touch.

But regardless...for agendas and all that, tomorrow will be fun.

Of course, it's a whole different situation for both players. But folks are going to be invested in this one tonight...hella people on my Facebook are all pissed about the pick, and they feel Mudiay is gonna try to show out just to prove that we should have picked him instead.

198. "The usage rate says it all"
In response to Reply # 190

Mudiay's usage rate is at 31 (which would be higher than Bron's rookie season) while D'Angelo's usage rate is at 19....the absolute totals are naturally going to be higher for Mudiay with that kind of difference.

D'Angelo had a pretty good game last night...getting into the lane, making excellent decisions on his shot selection and pass selection. Once he gets his legs underneath him, you're gonna see his jumper become far more consistent...it's right on target, he's just leaving it short.

Beyond that I want to say that the NBA League Pass interface online fucking SUCKS. They made me establish two separate log-ins for League Pass and NBA.com. Why? Neither of them works very well. I like that they don't have the annoying things like ads or "We will return after this commercial break" but the in-arena stuff has shitty audio and also sucks. It's almost disorienting, frankly, even if you're not on drugs (and more so if you are).

I like some features the basic interface is trash. Conversely the NHL and MLB ones are great, my only gripe with the NHL one is that it doesn't let you stay logged in more than a few hours but that's minor.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Basa's playing this up like victory is in hand and these early games have a ton of meaning.

Truth's assessment, ridiculous though it may be, is actually plenty fair within the context of this presentation of Basa's over the top agenda bait.

In a REAL discussion, with objectivity? Yeah, he's trolling, but he's right in line with the way this post was presented from jump.
