"Poll question: Is Bron a better athlete than MJ was though?"
Wed Aug-15-12 10:40 AM by melmag

*BASED OFF ATHLETIC ABILITY ALONE*

hell naw Bron a better player, but we often hear about how his size n speed has never been seen before, and he's the best athlete ever.

but I'm watching 80s vintage MJ and in no way Bron a better athlete..
shit I NEVER seen Bron do, Mike did with absolute ease & fluidity: the hangtime, unmatched speed, cat like quickness, INSANE acrobatic moves, and underated strength..

And I aint even mention the power dunks in traffic over real centers when they still reigned

Poll result (36 votes)
Bron better (27 votes)Vote
Mike better (9 votes)Vote

I have a 2008 espn magazine when the "redemption team" were in Bejing and they had the measurements of all the players

and

a espn reporter marveled at the fact that Lebron was (officially) listed at 6-9 and *277*...now, granted, this might have been the weight he played at during that summer

but

I'm sure he's at least 265

This is a dude that entered the league at 18 yrs old weighing 245 which is one of the reasons NBA scouts thought he was ready to play from day 1 in the NBA because he already had an *NBA body* ...and that was 9 yrs ago. So you're saying he hasn't gained at least 20 lbs since he's been in the league?

Kobe and Jordan both entered the league weighing UNDER 200 lbs. and look at both of their bodies by the time they started to reach their 30s.

The Power of LeBron
Story Highlights
LeBron James' game has grown along with his physique
James outweighs many centers but still has extraordinary speed and skill
The Cavs' superstar has improved his defense and mid-range shooting

There was a moment during last Friday's Cavaliers-Warriors game when it looked as if Golden State center Andris Biedrins, who is no small man at 6' 11" and 245 pounds, had been sucked out of an airplane hold, so forcefully was he sent flying backward. Biedrins was attempting to protect the rim when Cleveland forward LeBron James came charging down the lane in that straight-line, parting-the-waters manner of his. Gamely, Biedrins took to the air to try to block the shot, and then -- whoomp! -- next thing you knew he was hurtling onto his backside.
As for the 6' 8" James, he remained both on-balance and on-course, as if he'd merely hit a patch of turbulence on his solo commuter flight -- nonstop from basket to basket, departing 15 times nightly -- before rattling in a layup. Minutes later he took off again, only this time he toppled two Warriors, then threw down a one-handed dunk of surpassing violence. Afterward, Golden State forward Stephen Jackson described the perils of such encounters, "As big as he is, you hope he just doesn't run you over and give you a concussion."

And just how big is James, exactly? Well, that is a matter of intense speculation around the NBA. He came into the league in 2003 weighing 240 pounds and is listed at 250 in this year's media guide, but that number is clearly low. There are whispers that he goes 265; one report recently had him at 274. "He's at least 260, right?" guessed Jackson, who added that D-ing up James is like "guarding a brick wall."

In an attempt to settle the matter last week I brought a scale to my interview with James at a ballroom in San Francisco's St. Regis Hotel. He laughed, but didn't get on. "I can't let everybody know everything about LeBron," said James, who more than any other star understands the value of mystique. He did joke that he'd "gotten fat" -- this from a man with 5% body fat whose raised veins run like tiny interstates up his arms and calves -- then hemmed and hawed before confiding that he had gained eight pounds this summer "even though I was trying to lose 10." That said, a Cavs source puts James's weight "between 265 and 270."

Which, considering his extraordinary speed and skill, is staggering. There are plenty of centers who don't weigh that much, including Cleveland's own, 7' 3", 260-pound Zydrunas Ilgauskas. If Magic Johnson was the first big man to play like a point forward, then James is the league's first point linebacker. "He even makes reads like a football player," says Portland Trail Blazers coach Nate McMillan, who worked with James for the last three years on the national team. "And he has enough speed; he could probably play free safety." Imagine that coming up to hit you on a slant pattern over the middle.
It would be one thing if James were merely an athletic marvel, but his game has grown along with his physique. He's the primary reason the Cavaliers were an Eastern Conference-best 34-8 at week's end -- including 20-0 at home -- and, for the first time in James's career, a championship contender. Sure, credit also goes to coach Mike Brown, who was wise enough to delegate offensive and defensive game plans to his lieutenants this season, as well as 6' 1" Mo Williams, who is the diminutive Pippen to James's Jordan. But it all comes down to the guy who through Sunday was averaging 27.8 points, 7.2 rebounds, 6.8 assists, 2.0 steals and three mother-of-God-did-you-see-that? plays a game. "You knew the Cavs would be good, but I didn't think they'd be this good," says one Eastern Conference scout. "I didn't think LeBron was going to improve that much, especially defensively. It's not usual to see a guy his age come back better and stronger every year. He really is a freak."

If so, then let us examine this freak who, it should also be noted, has scored almost 12,000 points and is barely 24. By taking the measure of the man, perhaps we can calculate his impact on the game. Consider this LeBronatomy 101.

Baseball is not a sport you can walk away from and then years come back to and expect to be good at it let alone great. In my opinion, football would be a easier sport to fall into because there are multiple positions one can play that doesn't have the steep learning curve that hitting a baseball has.

that's really the only requirement here.

The reality is Michael Jordan wasn't even really a baseball star in North Carolina in high school, you don't hear stories about schools or scouts looking for him in that realm.

He got to play (badly, at a minor-league level) due to his name along with the speculation of a secretly-imposed suspension.

Meanwhile Bron was getting football scholarship offers from Urb Meyer as a sophomore.

I don't know why people are so resistent to admitting anyone can be better at anything than Michael Jordan but this athletic matchup beteen him & Lebron isn't even really close if you look at objecively.

Lebron is one of the thre-to-five biggest 'Physical Freak/Athletic-Anamoly' guys to play in the NBA ever.

Michael Jordan is not.

look all that fast when I watched him play baseball)

LB can outjump Jordan (maybe not vertically but off one leg, no doubt)

LB is stronger obviously

Jordan was quicker

but

Lebron has the type of athleticism that would be transferable to any sport he chose to play

speed and quickness of a wing player. Lebron is a couple of inches taller and about 40 pounds heavier than MJ was in his prime. Lebron is not necessarily a "better" athlete, he's just a different kind of athlete.

And the argument you used above abt Nique is not an accurate one..

first of all, Nique wasn't that much bigger than Jordan and however much he weighed over Jordan still makes his so called size advantage negligible at best

As far as comparing who was stronger btw the two, that is debatable also.

Nique gets the slight edge in leaping ability

but

take an MJ in his prime athletic years and he still wasn't the athlete that Lebron is.

I really believe Lebron could've excelled at any sport he chosed to play...whether it be football, baseball, or even track and field, I also submit that for a guy as big as he is, he's more coordinated than Jordan.

I'm not going to hold Jordan's failure at baseball, which is probably the hardest sport to try and play, against him particularly because of the age he attempted to play but I will say that watching him during that time I realized he wasn't as fast as I assumed he was...(he actually looked slow)

The fact that we're even comparing a guy that's as big as Karl Malone and Charles Oakley to players that are 40 and 50 lbs smaller should already tell you which of the two is the better athlete.

I know it based on other ish you've said before

I been watching Jordan play ever since he hit the winning shot vs my Hoyas

and

no, even then he wasn't a better athlete than Lebron, sorry.

Because Lebron playing in an era with protein shakes and
Star Wars conditioning/muscle repair technology and shit

So its a Wash

if Jordan grows up with this technology and conditioning,
he's at least as muscular as Kobe and is a better leaper
than he was

Its a reason niggas was either skinny or fat back then

i'm not even sure who I say IS more athletic, but cats are giving WAYYY too much credit to lebron being able to move "WITH ALL THAT SIZE AND WEIGHT" while at the same time conveniently forgetting how that nigga got the name "LeRobot"

speed is tough, Bron being big looks faster than he may be in fact and his ability to guard Rose is QUICKNESS rather than speed, but footwork and body control MJ all fucking day and three times on Sunday.

noble effort though. and you goddamn know 80% of these motherfuckers ain't watched much live basketball before 1998, otherwise half these damn debates wouldn't even exist.

There's a reason he averaged 8 fucking rebounds
one season and is one of the great rebounders,
EVER, inch for inch n/h.

And its not that Kevin Love positioning bullshit

Its because pound for pound he was stronger than
Lebron.

Its because, despite being shorter, he outleapt
people all the time.

And LOL @ people ignoring body control, coordination,
fluidity, which are more important for basketball
athleticism than merely running and jumping.

so does that explain why J Kidd averaged *8 rpg* TWICE in his career? because he was a better leaper and was more athletic than his competitors?

like I said, this right here is proof you're the one who doesn't watch games as much you pretend to lol

you do know that 6-6 was considered to be big for a guard back when Jordan entered the league, right?
>
>And LOL @ people ignoring body control, coordination,

and body control and coordination is what works AGAINST Jordan in this comparison for the simple fact that name another player that had Lebron's size who was as or more coordinated/fluid than he is? I'll wait...

but

I can name a boatload of players past and present who were just as coordinated and fluid as MJ was...the problem is: they weren't better BASKETBALL PLAYERS than Jordan but the league has always had guys 6-6 or 6-7 who are/were around Jordan's size and had tons of athleticism...

but

you can't name one player as big as Lebron who could run and move and jump like he can, not one which is why you used the wrong metric to base your flawed argument on.

And as I mentioned in the post, MJs strength was alarmingly underated. NOBODY ever credited him for that shit, we all took it for granted. The body control, hangtime, coordination, etc were all aspects of his strenght..

Lebron is just pure power and strength, but he lacks the acrobatics and speed to really be a universal athlete

Speed: Mike
Contorting: mike
gravity manipulation: mike
dynamic foot work: mike
athletic intelligence : mikkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkke
quickness with the dribble/and off of the dribble: mike
elevation: mike

power: lebron
strength: lebron

with all the power and strength that lebron has he is still very one dimensional...there is a reason why he didn't enter the dunk contest.

His footwork is still terrible , and he is still too lateral when working our from the perimeter....and his post game is still irrelevant.

Mike played MLB, and then came back within the same year, without any practice to push the bulls into the playoffs....talk about a top athlete

come on!

Plus mike is one hell of a golfer, who could perform on the PGA tour if he really wanted to

YES.

"Smith says Jordan is the hardest worker he's ever coached. In high school Jordan hustled so, he was nicknamed The Rabbit. Rabbit, run. When he enrolled at Chapel Hill, Jordan ran the 40-yard dash in 4.6 seconds. This fall he ran a 4.3. By running and lifting weights he has substantially built up his upper body and gained 12 pounds in two years, most of it in the shoulders."

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/basketball/nba/1999/jordan_retires/archive/831128/

do some research, and you clearly didn't watch mike J.

Lebron LOOKS LIKE HE'S GOING FAST because he's
so large. Hell, BARKLEY looked like he ran faster
than Jordan. Same with Karl Malone. Large people
who run well look remarkable.

Jordan was more like Deion Sanders where it just
looked effortless to him.

a play at first on a throwing error in those 'highlights'.

You tried to talk up Jordan running a 4.6 in college when Lebron was doing that in high school.

And you act as if Lebron isn't guarding the fastest player on the court in a league that's actually far faster than it was in 1987.

but to hold lebron's dick?

lebron is so one dimensional it's not even funny......

because you are talking out of the side of your ass, and out of your ass
about a one dimensional athlete .. and you of all people should know better.

shit AI is a better athlete than lebron ...AI played saftey, qb, and running back with crazy ass speed ...he was vick before vick...

and AI went up pound for pound against big ass athletes in the paint ...

so if you were in here saying AI over mike, as far as being the better athlete, I wouldn't have said shit...

but you said lebron....damn..and you aint even from the midwest.

Lebron couldn't win a chip without two superstars from his draft class. He didn't just need help. The nigga needed the cheat code to enable god mode.(c)Kira

When I played baseball or ran cross-country, I wasn't putting on spikes to make myself slower.

cleats in dirt/grass is a big hindrance compared to running on track asphalt in track shoes

so imagine how fast he would be on a fast surface with the proper running equipment on

Young Jordan was just as fast.

He just didn't look like he was going that fast,
same way Deion never looked like he was running
that fast

Guys with that natural athleticism have a type
of glide and fluidity that tape doesn't capture

Like I said, compare Barkley going coast to
coast to Jordan going coast to coast. Barkely
looks faster. Jordan was faster.

Period.

here go study

you'll never see lebron go that fast with the ball baseline, up the middle, etc

jordan was FAST WITH THE BALL......lebron does all of that run up the court shit without the ball on wack ass fast breaks.....

true SPEED with THE BALL, from the pivot to the bucket....think a cheeta h taking off from the spot and hitting 0-60 in less than 4 seconds.

there is a CLEAR difference between speed with ball and speed without ball.
Only star player that trumps MJ in that regard (speed with ball) is AI or J-Kidd.. sure, there's prolly others like Michael Adams, or Mugsy but who cares really. lol

When you hear of Bron's speed, its usually speed without the ball. Which is atounding in itself, but for purely b-ball related purposes, I'll take the faster guy WITH the ball 10 times outta 10

LBJ is easily more athletic than MJ. OE I saw the nigga play fuck off.

Lebron is a NBA 2K13 maxed out myplayer character. He's damn near 6'9 and around 270 pounds. The nigga can put up 40/19/9/9 on any given night. He can guard any team's three best players and rarely commit fouls. He does this for damn near 48 minutes a game.

LBJ is easily the most athletic player of his era and easily bests Jordan in terms of athleticism. Matter of fact I take LBJ over Jordan in every other category. He sure as hell isn't as selfish.

no he wouldn't

do you know what athleticism is?....lebron can't take off from the free throw line.

lebron can't hang in the air with his power and speed..mike could.

athleticism is more than just power and strength.

lebron is more like the hulk to jordan's spiderman/capt america....

In a one on one game , jordan would not only beat lebron with his athleticism, but he would destroy him with his athletic intelligence....

shit lebron does not even elevate higher than jordan on his jumpshot ...and lebron is the taller player .

lebron is all force, but put that nigga in the air, force him to contort, for him to put intelligence to his ability, force him to his WEAK side( mike never had a weak side..lol),...fail.

jordan: how you want it?...turn around, fade away form the left, or right?....up the middle hang?.....explode to the basket, pull up?

Yes, Lebron can hang in the air. You obviously don't watch LBJ. If you did you wouldn't have said that dumb shit. More on that later...

You are dumb as shit. You are heavily disrespecting LBJ. LBJ is not a hulking monster. Lebron's constant guarding of the the opposing team's best player shits on your point. He can guard Russell Westbrook and keep up with him.

You are on that Skip Bayless. Bron would hoe Jordan in a pickup game. This nigga said Bron don't jump as high on his jumper BWAHAHAHAHAHAHHA. Fuck you and this bullshit point.

You make Jordan sound like Superman. The nigga had flaws in his game especially in his younger days. Lebron is ambidextrous so fuck your point. The only weak point in Bron's game are his post moves.

Seriously fuck all this shit y'all talking about. Jordan was a great player but let's not make him out to better than what he was. You're defending Jordan on some legacy shit. He ain't Jesus. Nigga ain't create no earth. Nigga ain't invent basketball. If we had twitter when Jordan was popping, niggas wouldn't be swallowing his babies nearly as much, retroactively.

Because Hulk runs faster and jumps higher and further than Spider-Man and Captain America due to his size and strength.

In response to Reply # 0

vertical leap...

I call bullshit all day on that.

I've seen toooooooo many coaches say in the past that player so so ran a 4.2 or 4.3/40 time...basically exaggerating their prowess.

And a 48 inch vertical???? bwahahahahaha

David Thompson had a 44 inch vertical leap and he was in the guinness book of world records for it

if Jordan had a 48 inch vertical then Nique must have had a 50 or 51 inch vertical and Gerald Green's vertical must be like 55 inches lol

Kevin Loughery who coached both Jordan and Dr.J said Jordan was more creative around the basket than Jordan but Dr.J COULD JUMP HIGHER and Doc's vertical wasn't anywhere near 48 inches.

129. "what role does stamina play in this?"
In response to Reply # 0

bron serves far, far more roles on the court than MJ. He's always been his teams clutch rebounder, clutch defender, and leading assist guy...which has him all over the court, on both ends. For like 45+ a night. And is much bigger. MUCH bigger. Jordan, for all his greatness, was a slashing scorer.

I think jordan is quicker, more explosive, probably better body control (cuz as a smaller guy, he's gonna need to be) but every thing else, I got Bron.

It prolly goes to how much weight you put on certain skills though.

It was part of his character defect that made his ass so competitive, he could just go and go. They talked about it during the dream team too, 36 holes of golf, practice, game cards, nigga was on some energizer bunny for real.

In response to Reply # 132

Shit, I sleep about 4 hours a night, that don't make me athletic.

Compare Jordan's role on the bulls - ANY incarnation of the Bulls - to LeBron's on any team he's on. Bron does all the shit Pippen did, but better and scores more, playing more minutes. Being much bigger.

You telling me about Jordan playing golf after ass-raping the Lithuanian men's team with a team of all-stars on his side don't mean anything, really. He didn't HAVE to do anywhere near as much as LeBron does nightly, at any point in his career.

The stamina to do that in a competitive athletic context, for about 100+ games a year, at 265 is some crazy crazy shit, and is much different than being able to play some tonk after playing 2 guard with just primary scoring responsibilities.

ROFL this interrupts my initial first comment but i love when average motherfuckers compare themselves to singularly special athletes by isolating one aspect for comparison. good stuff fam.

you clearly knew my point was to illustrate his motors, dude was going in BEAST mode during dream team practices, on top of all that other stuff. and unlike you, he WAS athletic and doing great things, you were trying to be cute about it. his NBA career did enough to speak to his stamina.

based on the statement immediately above, you obviously don't know what the entire fuck you're talking about. what the hell was mike doing when he had to run point and was dropping triple doubles like crazy? what about during the second threepeat when rodman got suspended for kicking that cameraman so jordan had to kick up the rebounding? on top of leading in scoring and defending one of the top players on the other team? did you youtube his whole career like LBS Finest?

i mean what do you think 32,8,8 for a season MEANS?
how'd he average 11 assists during the first title?

come on man.

also, this "he's big" is getting tired as fuck. we KNOW he's big, we get it, but stop using it as a crutch like it's a handicap. it is PART of the advantage he has over others, not something he's had to overcome.

so when i address "stamina" you try and shoot it down and qualify it, showing you know little about what jordan actually did for those squads. the end of the damn second threepeat, pippen's ass was OUT for the closing minutes because his back was shit, mike made EVERY single significant play in the last 2 minutes on both sides of the court, yet somehow bron's had to do what he never has??? FOH man

cats are officially trying to dismiss his career now smh

Jordan was not defending 1 - 5.

Bron does.

Jordan was not regularly his teams leading rebounder.

Bron damn near always has been.

Jordan didn't have the responsibility to do the shit that bron does on both ends of the floor.

Bron size matters, because while it allows him to take more of a beating, it also should cause him to wear out sooner, especially as a player who plays on the perimeter as much as he does. Big dudes don't run like that, cuz it fucks them up, physically.

But this dude is always on the floor, and never injured...so much so that you mufucka is kinda blown when he is.

I ain't one of them newest is greatest cats, but I don't pray to jordan at night either.

Bron is something completely different than jordan. I think he's a better athlete cuz of what he has to do every night.

Put it like this: Pippen was a much more versatile player than Jordan, and at least as athletic. Bron's a bigger, stronger, more durable, Pippen.

>Jordan was not defending 1 - 5.
>
>Bron does.
let's be real, bron is not routinely defending centers, he has on occasion but realistically it's 2-4, with regular 1 duty in certain matchups.

>Jordan was not regularly his teams leading rebounder.
actually, he led them in scoring, rebounds, AND assists until the 1990 season, but nice try.

>Bron damn near always has been.
>
>Jordan didn't have the responsibility to do the shit that bron
>does on both ends of the floor.
like facilitate, score, defend, and rebound? seriously? he absolutely did have the responsibility, you're letting his scoring overshadow the other elements of his well rounded game.

>Bron size matters, because while it allows him to take more of

>especially as a player who plays on the perimeter as much as
>he does. Big dudes don't run like that, cuz it fucks them up,

but we've always established that he's a freak of nature, so to even treat him like a regular big guy doesn't work. he clearly doesn't operate by the same rules so his size can ONLY be seen as an asset

>But this dude is always on the floor, and never injured...so
>much so that you mufucka is kinda blown when he is.
>
>I ain't one of them newest is greatest cats, but I don't pray

if you see above, i said i wasn't even sure if i'd say jordan was more athletic. it's the arguments saying why bron is that don't hold up.

>Bron is something completely different than jordan. I think
>he's a better athlete cuz of what he has to do every night.
different doesn't mean better

>Put it like this: Pippen was a much more versatile player than
>Jordan, and at least as athletic.
I disagree. Pippen had longer arms which aided him in defending more positions, but he wasn't MUCH more versatile, what he did was free up Jordan, a clearly more talented scorer, to carry that load without having to defend the other team's best player every night.

>Bron's a bigger, stronger,
>more durable, Pippen.
They're somewhat comparable, but not much. Bron for most of his career has needed the ball in his hands most of the time to be a factor. Pippen has not. Bron is a superior scorer, Pippen is better at getting others involved. Defense is a push, although when the bulls would execute that trap, it was a thing of beauty to watch Pip at work.

If it's just size then shaq was the most athletic player ever.

If it's just straight up about what your body can do in skill scenarios, it's MJ over Bron and Rose over both.
