"what is Bynum's Laker legacy?"

i mean the cat did get a couple of chips and was very good.

naw he ain't at the door steps with WLit, Miken, Kareem and Shaq, however he did more than ELden Campbell and Vladi DIvac and other post Shaq Centers in LA Right?

so whats his Laker Legacy in hindsight?

never has a cat been traded with so much potential and also coming on and who knows how his story will end up?

Phil didn't like him, his name was consistently floated in trade rumors, and he couldn't be the #1 option on offense even though he's got the best post game of any current center.

He is probably happy to be on a team where he can really shine.

- They went out on a limb for him as a fat 17 year old. They saw a potential no one else saw (at least the 9 picks before him)

- They hung onto him when they had a chance to get a couple of stars (Kidd, Melo) who were major at the time that could have contributed more to their championships runs at the time, and refused to make trade offers that were clearly offered to them. They believed Bynum was the future of the franchise.

- They stuck by him through his injury plagued seasons and never made money an issue, he always got his extensions with no haggling.

- Phil wanted Bynum to dedicate himself to the defense, and protect the middle and grab boards. He also was very lazy at showing on pick and rolls. Bynum was more concerned about his offensive game, which truthfully, if he beasted on defense, he could have averaged a lot more. Bynum was notorious for taking games off on defense, which was baffling when you saw the rare games that he brings it and shows you his mindblowing potential. He wouldn't grab boards, box out, do the little things. He just wanted to shoot (I admit he has a wonderfully refined offensive game). They even upped him in the foodchain by having more plays called for him and sacrificing Pau (playing him in a position he was not comfortable in) to make sure Bynum was the man on offense.

- Lastly, just as he was having his best season, and the Lakers were ready to hitch their wagon to him, he started showing more of his immaturity. It was one thing to show it against teammates, or his coach, but to be nonchalant against a management (specifically Jim Buss), who had his back all along, made them rethink their stance.

All that said, I really loved Bynum, and still do. The Lakers once balked on trading Bynum for Howard straight up, but as last season played out to a close, they had to. I wish Bynum the best. I would like to see him beast on both ends, and learn how to play out of double teams (he sucks at it). I think he will have a stellar career (barring injuries). I also always love him for playing with one leg through 3 championship runs. But he did get a fair shake in LA.

Butler only play 1 season with Kobe and at that point it was his best season ever.

Shaq's fgp went up but his fga's went way down despite no longer having to play with the great ball hog Kobe Bryant

what am i going to do, dig around for kwame brown's numbers or tell you what D Fish did with the Warriors?

we're looking at good starters who went elsewhere, those were the two guys that came to mind so i checked their numbers. what evidence did he have? just pro-kobe conjecture like always.

In response to Reply # 16

especially big men. gasol never even sniffed 54% before LA, came here and shot almost 59%, then 56.7. Odumb's FG% improved dramatically after he was traded here and then he went to Dallas and fell of the face of the earth. Chris Mihm was most efficient here. even Kwame! dude shot almost 60%.

even the spot up shooters like Radmanovich and Jumaine Jones had career highs from 3. Sessions had career highs from 2 and 3. and we all saw Smush Parker's % plummet after he left. as for Ariza, he didnt hit career highs in LA but his % damn sure went down in Houston and New Orleans. shit Shannon Brown just left to play with Nash and even his FG% decreased.

people dont think of kobe as a player who makes his teammates better because he's a ball hog but his role in the offense has always been to score a shitload of points AND set up others. he's been the lone playmaker on his team since forever.

Just admit you were wrong about what you said. It's not really a solid indicator either way anyway. I'm not here argue the broader claim, just the specific one you made, which was inaccurate.

Here's what I'll say about Drew - like LA2P said, the dude was a WARRIOR in the 09 and 10 finals. He grew from a raw project into an offensive beast who began to care a wee bit too much about being the #1 or #2 option (I don't care to look it up, but I'd venture to guess our win percentage wasn't so great when Drew scored 25+, but was awesome when he grabbed more than 10 boards).

Still, he's a hell of a player. Aloof, immature, and not yet ready to lead - but a hell of a player who deserved all the acclaim he got and who's body has betrayed him from being a 3-4x all star with 3+ chips.

D12 better tho.

This was a dude who never had to accept any kind of real responsibility or leadership until this season. He was always the third or fourth or fifth on the totem pole during those championship runs so there was no spotlight on him. Clearly, his immaturity was definitely spotlighted this year as he took over the responsibility of #2, and it's a work in progress. The point is...many people don't just suddenly turn into leaders or mature overnight when they had no prior need to do so. He spoke candidly and openly in the closing interview to Mitch and Coach Brown about playing more for his teammates rather than himself. As aloof and uninterested that his pragmatism and intellect make him sound, those two qualities are also very important in learning from your past and developing further.

I wish him all the best and have loved seeing him grow from that chubby 17 year old to the potential beast today w great footwork. It's a shame two freak injuries took away some of his explosiveness but he has recovered/adjusted, particularly with the new brace he adopted at the end of last year.

That being said...Dwight better for our needs.

Since the 2008-2009 season, he's:

70-34 in games with >=10 rebounds (67%)
14-4 in games with >=25 points (77%)

We'll see what happens when his touches go up and his rebounds go down (cause they will).

I really don't care THAT much and can't believe I'm even looking for it...but at least I gave a decent sample size. And in your world, that means something. Enjoy, sometimes-Philly fan!

..while his size, stature, and skill set show great potential for someone his age, most people forget just how long he's been in the league

his injuries have been a plague for quite some time, and only recently has he shown the ability to actually remain relatively healthy for an entire season.

while his size & strength should guarantee him solid standing over the next few seasons, the wear & tear of the game will certainly show. *you can accelerate that timeline if he doesn't have some serious help offensively.

all in all, he's top 5 among active centers.

i wish bynum nothing but success, but something tells me that we've already seen his best years behind him.

..and miles to go before i sleep...

..but i can't help but to consider the fact that this past season was not only shortened, but it was also one of the few where the lakers were comin' off an early exit in the playoffs

if he plays an ENTIRE season on another team, lengthy playoff run while maintainin' the same productivity, THEN i'll consider his greater potential within' reach.

'til then, its just wishful thinkin' on borrowed time

I agree on the point that the injuries will take a toll on him down the road, but what I have always loved about Bynum is his ability to want to get better (at least on offense), and I think he will have his best season ever next season......barring injuries of course.

..i'm just not convinced about his endurance

regardless of where he ultimately lands (philly bein' the obvious), he won't have players like kobe, pau, and metta to take the pressure off of him

his conditioning will have to improve greatly, along with his maturity.

remember, he's had one of the most generous opportunities to grow in the league because he was drafted & nurtured by the lakers (when most teams would've given up on him a long time ago). *another major injury will pretty much shut the door on future contracts.

again, i really do wish him the best, but i really don't see his career improving much more than it has already.

He is 25 years old and wear-and-tear wise you can shave off his rookie season completely (no higher than it would have been playing college, probably less intense really).

His inability to stay healthy for 82 games is no more a concern now than it was a couple years ago, although it's obviously still a big concern. He doesn't play star's minutes either, 30 a night max in his career.

There is also some question about his ability to assume a larger role with a team but I would answer those questions affirmatively. When he's been trusted, he's shown some good things. If he had a bigger role I think that would help his confidence and consistency. A new start should help.

Of course he is heading into high expectations from a demanding coach and an equally demanding fan base. That's good. He was not going to get better being pampered and if he has firm but knowledgeable people around him, he should get better.

I don't have a lot of certainty but I am optimistic about his time with the Sixers. As far as his Laker legacy, he was a draft steal and a guy who played a huge role in two titles. Was there really anything unclear about that?

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

bynum had major injury concerns comin' out of high school, so the red flag was already there.

>obviously still a big concern. He doesn't play star's minutes
>either, 30 a night max in his career.

with a full regular season, you better believe his minutes will increase. no kobe, no gasol, and plenty of double teams could be serious trouble for him.

his sensitive nature doesn't help. while i credit him for maintaining his composure for the most part, you can truly see the areas of concern regardin' his future.

>Of course he is heading into high expectations from a

the laker org worked tirelessly with him regarding development, but he was far from pampered. the real reason for concern moving fwd is the fact that he's never responded well to physical confrontations on the floor. now, he'll have huge expectations on & off the court, with a rabid fan base known to turn on you @ the drop of a dime.

>I don't have a lot of certainty but I am optimistic about his

again, he was a draft steal because of his previous injury reports.

there were other reasons he slipped, i mean he was a dough boy with zero college pedigree at the time.

i wasn't saying he was pampered in LA, just that he did not need to be elsewhere to succeed. in fact i think that would be a negative thing for him.

like i said, i see all the same ifs with him that you do, i just don't think there is that kind of urgency with time.

..history has shown that men of his size & stature deteriorate rapidly (esp after serious injuries)

when you consider the toll taken on his knees alone, its an incredible gamble at this point. still, it only takes one incredible year capped with a championship for that gamble to pay off. but in this current era, its highly doubtful that philly will ever make it past miami, let alone stand a chance against the western powers.

That would make sense if he hadn't just completed the healthiest seeason of his career against a condensed game schedule while playing nearly ten minutes more per game plus finally got to a point where he was finally able in the Brown era to wrestle 13 shots a night away from Double-Team-Heat-Check-From-Distance Dude.

most people would be hard-pressed to name 5 active centers better than bynum. *shrug*

and your suggestion that i don't wish him well? you obviously don't know me very well. i wished the same for shaq, lynch, dunn, & plenty other players who were once members of teams that i love. i'm not one of the zealots who hate anyone who's not on their fav team.

i don't argue stats. i look to actual play on the court/field. bynum's # of shot attempts suffered more from poor entry passes than anything else (but there's no stat line for that). if you want to fault someone, fault the entire org for failing to bring in a proper guard to actively distribute the ball. kobe's shown willingness to dial down his attempts (3peat yrs, olympic appearances, etc), whenever he's been presented with teammates that handle the ball well and knock down shots.

while i was very happy with bynum's production this season, i recognize that it was condensed and laker's benefit heavily from their hollywood connection (esp near midseason). on top of that, he's been playin' with one of the largest front court presences in the league for most of his career.

again, i truly hope he continues to improve, but i'm doubtful that will happen in philly.

pretending to root for us over a dude none of y'all wanted to keep out of some kinda fake-class gesture fans of a perennially contending team feel content enough to do.

Nah, we're cutting that off at the past on this board today & going forward.

If Socks balls out you're gonna hear about on this board until you hate him as much as he & we already hate Kobe.

So if that's too unseemly for any of those classy Laker Fans to swallow y'all might as well ignore us, because ain't no use frontin' like there's a fake truce.

This is a Jersey kid returning to hopefully give life back to a moribund Philly franchise that seems to be figuring it out under the new ownership.

Drew no longer has anything to do with you.

outside of maybe some strategic tanking but them finally having a worthwhile building block for the first time in damn near a decade is going to finally up the ante a bit from the boring mediocre malaise they've been stuck in.

I wouldn't expect The United States Of Laker Fans to truly understand going thru full decades of terribleness or even worse being just good enough to not bottom out.

Six straight seasons of being a low-seed with Andre Iguodala as their best player is deflating as fuck.

what on earth does a Hollywood connection have to do with Andrew Bynum starting every game at 35 minutes plus a clip in a condensed season with no signs of injury?

>on top

Pau & him didn't really mesh together very well all the time or even often, that's why they often split time with Odom when they were winning titles & particularly this year when Brown took the training wheels off AB a bit as Pau looked out of place all season.

If we're not talking stats & talking 'actual play', then if you don't recognize this to be true I guess you watched less Laker games than I do.

You've offered little actual insight as to why though, so therefore the analysis seems fairly disposable so far.

>most would be hard-pressed to name more than one, I'm all ears

that's not generous, that's realistic. while bynum shows flashes of dominance, he hasn't been consistent enough to put him above and beyond. we shall see how he fairs without the laker line up.

>what on earth does a Hollywood connection have to do with
>Andrew Bynum starting every game at 35 minutes plus a clip in
>a condensed season with no signs of injury?

perhaps you hadn't noticed that the lakers greatly benefit from lengthy home-stands through the season because of their annual mid-season roadtrip that durin' award season for hollywood. anyone who actively watches the games has heard this mentioned a few times each season. while it appears rigorous, laker players actually consider it a benefit, ensuring that they have more home games during the start & finish of the season.

>Pau & him didn't really mesh together very well all the time

you're mistaken here. bynum initially split time w/gasol & odom due to him constantly in recovery from injuries. on top of that, he didn't always play well within the offensive set. add to that the fact that he often holds the ball too long, slow to get started once he DOES commit to a move, and habitually puttin' the ball on the floor when he's arm's-length from the basket (resulting in more blocks/steals). these are the same issues philjax often hated about his game.

*as far as pau goes, his play this season was beyond sporadic and can't really be blamed on anyone but himself. players can have off years *shrug*.

>You've offered little actual insight as to why though, so

so chronic injuries & reluctant composure aren't factors in professional sports anymore?

so this started working for Bynum last season for the first time, however now is an indicator he's on the decline?

going on an off year & change, however obviously he wasn't helped by Bynum's extended good health plus increased role because that means he's not seeing the ball as much (since Chuckie McChuckerson ain't comin off a single shot). I mean, that was pretty obvious to anyone watching this year's squad.

like I said, if he hadn't just had his best season in perfect health then it might have held a bit more weight.

yeah that's pretty much a statement of the blatantly obvious, however if you think he's in the Top 2 wouldn't you have just said that rather than 'arguably Top 5'.

Let me try this one more time: where does Bynum currently rank among NBA centers, how many are rated ahead of him & who?

lol, how are you all going to make us "hate" Bynum? Like people have said, its not like Philly is an actual rival. I would have been more concerned if he had ended up in Houston or another western conference team. In Philly he's a "non muthafuckin' factor"(c)E.Lozado

How Bomb, who has been riding the nuts of Lebron who obviously has zero association with the Sixers, is going to tell anyone who they can or can't root for is beyond me.

It's particularly laughable when it's a dude like Bynum who was drafted by us, helped us win 2 rings, was traded to a non-contender, and was traded for the best center in the league, setting us up for a nice championship window. LOL.

you might wanna try that bullshit spiel with lesser sports enthusiast. that shit doesn't ride with me, fam.

>Let me try this one more time: where does Bynum currently rank
>among NBA centers, how many are rated ahead of him & who?

i don't view players like most. while bynum has displayed flashes of an incredible potential (stats & beyond), i also take into consideration his health, endurance, drive, composure, basketball iq, skill set, ability to execute in crunch time, as well as the obvious (size, speed, & strength).

while he scores high marks in drive, skill set, and execution (as well as the obvious), he still has a few issues regardin' health/endurance, composure, & b-ball iq.

*please note: b-ball iq is subjective, but mostly relevant in regards to adjustments (in-game AND throughout a season/career).

in order to crack my top ten, you have to lock down these intangibles. in order to crack the top five, you have to dominate. it order to earn the top spot, you have to do dominate consistently over time (5 yrs or more).

*also note: while the top spot is always coveted, the order of ranking from 2-5 (or 6-10) is pretty much irrelevant, since the only thing that really matters in that convo is - who earns the top spot.

while drew is an impressive player, he needs a few more yrs playing at the level displayed this past season to solidify the top spot.

the verdict is still out on bynum, but he could very well prove to be the best of the active centers currently in the league.

above Vlade, Elden, and others. And I think Dwight might take the spot below Shaq Mikan Cap and Wilt....so that leaves him at like #6 on our all time list of Centers. So maybe he'll be our best Center to never make the Hall of fame or some shit.

It could have been 150 replies of 'I wish all the best for Bynum' with one 'Im cool with him leaving' sprinkled in, and it would have been the exact same response.
