not only black men, but black women as well....
you been a man before uniforms camoflogued you as one before sumone called you by a master's name and not the one your mother gave you been a man you are a man don't be no hero.
I found solace in the above lines... You were always capable of writing exactly what needs to be said. Peace.

"the 'centre' asks us, demands of us, that we should sign a peace agreement quickly and convert ourselves into an 'institutional' political force, that is to say, convert ourselves into yet another part of the machinery of power. to them we answer 'NO' and they do not understand it. they do not understand that we are not in agreement with those ideas. they do not understand that we do not want offices or posts in the gov't. they do not understand that we are stuggling not for the stairs to be swept clean from the top to the bottom, but for there to be no stairs, for there to be no kingdom at all."

to assume that these men who have/are enlisted are doing so because they want to be men or heroes. in my experience, alot of times, these do so because they feel trapped by societal stasis that exists... no money in the house/no house to go to/no satisfactory employment- these things make the armed forces a viable option.
that being said-
the piece itself was quite a display of writing skill-
>you went in search >of stars on petty coats >to form reasons >for the rhyme you call dick >and i told you >you were born with it >but you thought i was lying
intricately simple intro here. a very visual portrayal of a simple concept-well done.
>and >now >you a nigga with a sand nigga name >fighting a battle >within yourself
"nigga" can be effective to convey within one word an existence, a way of life- the import was received here.
>with stripes 'cross your eyes >don't be no hero >cause heroes always lose >their lives >and i told you once before >a blk man don't have no business in an army >that he ain't fighting with >but fighting for >purple hearts that dangle from dead niggas >ain't revolutionary >cause you died as an enemy >and i told you this >only heroes die >cause they ain't got enough courage to see >life beyond a moment >but you and time are twin brothers >the sun dials of myth >running >not from >but with >you been a man >before uniforms camoflogued you as one >before sumone called you by a master's name >and not the one your mother gave >you been a man >you are a man >don't be no hero.
very powerful/controversial message here, funneled thru some very poignant and powerful words.
