The city breathes… Still wheezin from eternal cold seasons The asphalt cracked and bleedin And the rats is feedin On the flesh of trapped angels that became demons Where God is loved and hated for the same reason The people say “Free us”, the preachers play Jesus “Gimmie a tithe, for my time…” and Jah loses credence We try to build a hope chest for the hope-less To the let their soul rest But they haven’t learned to let their light glow yet On the concrete flesh, mothers softly wept Old soldiers reject the name ‘army vets’ They say, “That title is so out of character” “Cuz I’ve never fought a worse war than Black America” Dreamers feel the city life is a slow death Writin our will in the vapors from our cold breath Then that gun start sneezin, all our over your chest And that heat from the Vicks, will put you to rest The ones who should be light, be outright dim And the cats who can’t cope get spat out like phlegm The metropolis lungs is a populous sponge Where a thought sparked and its hypothesis sung There was found a way for us to lay pillars Hathaway, Lonnie Lynn, and J Dilla Music in the right hands bring hope to assemblies Conscious Psalm Rap…CPR for the city The city breathes

Ha! That's one of my favorite songs. But naw, it wasn't that song that sparked me. I've been spinnin Dilla non stop. It's this one track on that Donuts CD called Gobstopper. When I heard it, it just reminded me of the city. The horns on that piece just took me back in time. I just be at work writin to it. "The City Breathes" just came to me out of that. So I put it down...but I did it kinda fast and didn't proofread. Lookin over this I got a few typos. LOL Ehh well.
