"Historic Fiction of the Word Nigger- Short Story"

As a preface to this literagy please refer to these two websites.
the First has a post by the infamous Saul Williams:

http://www.saulwilliams.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=2;t=000192

And this link is for alot of information on the slave trade itself which many of you prolly know already but has information good for everyone.

http://faculty.mdc.edu/jmcnair/Joe8pages/roots_of_slavery.htm

Bonny, Niger River (December 17, 1783 a.d)

"Lord John we are to meet with the Oracle Chukwu that presides over Bonny at the southern tip of this river they call Niger." First mate Daniel said as they floated down the beautiful calm of the river.

"Good. We shall meet with this Oracle and begin to unload our stock only after he has accepted our offer. Once we have the the slaves we shall make back to the Queen Anne and set sail for the Americas as soon as possible. I want no problems with this transaction. None at all" John said.

The dense foilage crept inwards towards the blue blazing sky. Daniel ran to the starboard side of the boat and called down to the mixed English/ Portugeuse crew below, announcing the arrival to Bonny, the largest slave port city on the river. The crew of 3 officers and 8 crewmen all stepped onto the rough crimson shore and docked the boat. The vessle they built had enough room for 100 slaves in the hull of the boat. When they reached the Queen Anne this load would be put with the other 750 slaves that Lord John had negotiated or killed for in the last 6 months. Mainly he had gotten his goods by means of trade for muskets, a mere 20 guns and gun powder could be traded for anywhere between 200 and 250 slaves.

The Oracle Chukwu had already known about the pale walkers that had come looking for slaves in return for weapons that were rumored to unleash the 'wrath of the heavens' and had prepared in corralling the local slaves from neighboring villages by offering them sanctuary from being eaten by the Gods. He would accept these new weapons and use them to seize the land of Utzi to the north which was stolen from his people when he was a child. He would level the field with these weapons from God.

The formalities were abundandt when the Pale walkers arrived. They made sure not to make any offensive gestures like walking behind or in front of the Oracle. Talks went along smoothly and after feating on goat cheese and potato greens, they went into the talk of the stock.

"We are willing to provide you with 5 of the finest British musketts and 10 barrells of gunpowder that will last for about 5 years. To use against any enemies that you may have. In return we wish to take with us 300 of your slaves; men and women only." Lord John said thru a translator.

"Hmm. I must see this weapon and it in use. Ntgow! bring in the the thief!" Chukwu pronounced

"The Gods have looked upon our lands with favor. We will see if they look upon this cabbage theif as highly, with your weapon."

They brought in the handsome cocoa skined boy of roughly 13 years of age. He couldn't be much younger than Lord John's first mate Daniel. They set him at the far end of the chamber and watched him shiver. Daniel cocked the musket and took aim.

"Now with this weapon we can deliver a fatal blow from anywhere inside 50 meters. Are you sure you wish to use a live subject?" John asked with a tinge of hesitancy.

"He is a thief! If your weapon is deemed by the heavens to take his life, that is the decision of the Gods and we shall not quarrel with that!" Chukwu knifed at the pale walker.

Daniel pulled the trigger. The young man's body slumped over as the smoke from the barrell of the muskett trailed into the air. Gleefully delighted, Chukwu clapped his hands at the prospect of avenging his people.

"I give you 75 men and 25 women to take with you in exchange for 30 of your weapons and 5 barrells of the potion of fire. No other offer is to be accepted. This offer is final" The Oracle announced as he stood to leave them to discuss the offer.

"Agreed." Lord John quickly said and thrusted the musket into the Oracle's hand. "We will load them as the sunrises in the morning and set sail by the following sunrise aboard the Anne."

2. "Queen Anne"
In response to Reply # 0

Queen Anne Gulf of Guinea, (December 21, 1783 a.d.)

Lord John looked out over the marvelous Afrikkan sea. The blue waves seemed made of crystal he thought. He began thinking about the cargo from Niger that had just been loaded onto the boat. He quickly became angered at the site of them. The Oracle had given him 75 men that were all puny compared to the slaves he had aquired from Cameroon, Sierra Leon and the landlocked nations of Chad. He would never be able to sell these savages when he arrived to Jamestown. And when he stood them next to the Mandigos he got from inland Cameroon, if he was able to sell them it would be at a completely unbearble rate.

"Lord John! What shall we do with the Nigers? Where shall we put them?" A Portuguese crewman holler up to him.

All of the slaves had a different task. For some it was cooking and cleaning linens he had traded for. For others it meant repairing the hull of the ship, painting the outside of the ship or manning the sails. He would make the Nigers scrub the deck of the ship and dispose of all the waste down below.

"Put them below and give them a double serving of their meal today!" He holler back.

"Aye, my Lord"

"My Lord." A soft voice behind him started "We havent enough rations for all them to get double servings and also feed the other cargo." Daniel said.

"Do not tell me how to tend to my cargo! I must make these scrawny animals to look decent by the time we get to Jamestown! Do you think I care if others suffer? As long as they all make it to America I could care less for these inexpicable excuses for humans!" He screamed at the first mate.

In fact, he had thought this through quite a bit. He had decided that he would keep the rations away from the Mandigos, only feeding them enough to survive and hereby ensuring that the most powerful of the warriors on his ship could not initiate any type of mutiny. The Nigers would gain their worth in wieght and he would turn a profit. He could taste it. He wanted them to scrub the deck under the unforgiving Atlantic sun, wanted them to be the hardest worker he had, simple to ofset any questions of their worth to sharecroppers and the tobacco plantation owners and slave merchants.

"No Daniel, I changed my mind, get those Nigers out here on the deck now! We set sail in an hour."

3. "Jamestown, VA"
In response to Reply # 2

Jamestown, VA (July 17, 1784 a.d.)

The Queen Anne slowly angled its way into the mouth of the Jamestown harbor. It would be another few hours before the ship would be allowed into port to dock. As they waited for clearance to dock, the crewmembers stood all of the remaining slaves on the top deck of the boat to airate the stench of stale flesh and feces. The took barrells of fresh water and doused the cargo with it, splashing it into their faces to make them cometo. The proceeded to scrub each and every one of the remaining 400 cargo that they had, sanding off all the blemishes and dirt from their charcoal bodies. They had lost many of the cargo to famine and some mystery disease causing them to dump the bodies overboard for the sharks to eat. The only other thing to do was for Lord John to change the ship's log recording that they only possessed 400 live cargo from Afrikka, a load of arms for sale, and 1,000 linens from the coast of Afrikka as well.

"Daniel. We must make the most of what we have. We will sell our cargo to Merchants in groups of 20. Each group will sell for 3 pounds of gold or 12 pounds of silver. We stand to make 60 pounds of gold off of this venture and that would buy us another ship or two" Lord John said without looking at the first mate as he changed the ships log

"I want you to run down to Tom Watsons place and have him come check out our Nigers. I dont know how it happened but we only lost 3 of the Nigers and hundreds of the others. Tell them we only accept top dollar for them, scratch that, make it 5 pounds gold and 20 pounds of silver. I want to walk away with no less then 100 pounds of gold you hear me?"

When the ship docked, Daniel rushed his way over to Tom Watsons place, careening through the cobblestone streets. He walked into the Pub and found the merchant he was looking for. Watson owned the Pub-n-Pub for many years but always seemed to spend too much time on the wrongside of the bar. Tom Watson didnt really need the pub anyhow because he had made a fortune selling slaves to tobacco plantations up and down the coast from Georgia to Virginia. Daniel told him of the loss of cargo but that he had to come see the Nigers that had almost all survived. Surely they would be an asset to any businessman.

"Niggers? How did they survive? something in that river water make em immune to disease or sumthin?" The fat merchant chuckled aloud.

"Dont really know, but that would be the best way to put it. Hell you could prolly double your profits if you sold them that way" Daniel said as he sipped an English Ale.

"Ya know I reckon your right about that." He said staggering into a standing position.

"My boy, lets go see what you got for the world of America. Hell you may be English but I like how you and Lord John operate."

They worked their way back to the ship docks where Tom Watson looked over the goods. Happily he paid for everyone of the remaining Nigers and a few of the other Mandingos.

"Where'd you say these savages were from again?" He asked Lord John

"We got them from the Oracle on the River Niger."

"Niger huh?"

"Yes."

He plopped down 30 pounds of gold for Lord John and the crew of Queen Anne. Then he escorted his new cargo into the mezzanine of the city, shuffling chains and low fearful mumbles eminating from the broken souls that were simply happy to be back on dry land. He lined them up in his regular spot and began calling to the passersby

"NIGGERS FOR SALE! OUTLASTED FAMINE AND DISEASE. HARDEST WORKING SLAVES EVER DISCOVERED!"

"NIGGERS FOR SALE"

"How much for a nigger?" an interested man asked.
