4 is better than 3.

Anyways, music cant be systematically judged / categorized.
Different music does different things for different people.

from bestbuy.com

The Source (11/98, p.198) - 3.5 Mics (out of 5) - "...With a delicate balance of Black Nationalism, well-chosen interludes and lyrics to go, high-pitched metaphor specialist Kweli and straight-up showman Mos prove that they're more than just 'lyrically handsome'..."

It should've gotten 5 Mics...

The Black Star album was good, but it had flaws. I think it deserved what it got from The Source. Look at the improvements on "Black On Both Sides" & "Reflection Eternal". Both got 4 mics, but they deserved 5 (well, at least Mos anyway).

The Roots got 4 mics this time?
Hmmm... gotta look into that.
Besides, ratings don't mean shit.
Nelly is a consistent 3½ mic man, and he sells big...
I can't see Eminem get 5 mics either, unless he reeeeeeally comes good...

It could've been worse... Kim Osorio and the guys couldn't have understood the album's "change of pace" and given it three, but knowing Kim (a huuuuuge Wu-Tang fan) she accepts change.

unless he reeeeeeally
>comes good...

damn---how good does he need to come? a reverse MJ? LOL!

but on the real--i'm happy. contrary to what y'all may assume, "break you off" is NOT the direction of the record. we are just smart enough to dupe a few 106 and parkers to buy it (do not misread this as a "comprimise" song statement either, i stand by the song (more the album version than radio edit)--but i know we had to do what we had to do.

and i was a lil scurrred because it flys all over the place, that i knew that they give ratings on some "street" level. as in will a mofo from st. louis love this or not. and i knew it had to have been better than the average album just so that we could get a four (i still say if this was the mind squad from 1994 we woulda gotten @@@@1/2)--but it's cool. i'm still hungry as fuck, and i'm not stopping til i get my @@@@1/2.

if anything i'm more dissapointed that we didn't get the main review--that honor went to

1990-@@@@
1993-@@@
1995-@@@@
1997-@@@@ (don't quote me on this one)
2000-@@@1/2 (really not certain about this one either)
2002- (1985 @@@@@)
2002- @@@@

and the four "@@@@"er artist got the coveted HHQ honors.

still hungry.

lose their way in the limbo of the commercial middleground. (see: atcq)

even the most skillful funambulist can't walk the tightrope forever; the desire for more (either acclaim on the one side, or fame on the other) always knocks the balancing act off.

it's really a depressing thing as a hiphop head to know all of your favorites must do the grayson tumble sooner or later, for one reason or the other.

we're talkin two different things here... i'm talkin why you care about the Source... you're talkin career. The source can give MADE MEN 50 mics and they'll still brick.

Now this state ment i was talkin about the mainstream... not Source. Yes you do have to throw a clap at the mainstream consumers and thats understood. But dont let them, nor the Source determine sucess vs. failure. That was my point.

5's are never 5's.

and it gets too scrutinized. besides, those ratings are lifestyle ratings. they award em on status and lifestyle. as much as i love aquemini---part of me is listening to them as "competition" so it makes it real hard for me to enjoy it as an album. all i see are 5s. same with blueprint same with scarface, et al.

4.5 is the same as a 5, but it's less scrutinizing.

I stand behind "Life After Death"
Its such a complete album. 5 mics in terms of hiphop is fitting for it. 5 mics in terms of all genres is probably a bit much. But the source is a hiphop publication. "Life After Death" is not flawless but no 5 mic album is.

i wouldn't change a thing wit illmatic (even the imperfections were ceelo), but i'd definitely make "life after death" a single cd (maybe even illmatic-length).

man, who gives a fuck 'bout grades? report cards don't determine a scholar's intelligence nor do ratings determine a musician's quality.

actually, it seems like y'all been pretty successful without having to depend on 106 and Park.

btw, i'm curious, do you

A) make music independant of outside pressure then after the product's complete, hope that it'll have commercial success

B) make music while simultaneously considerin' what's necessary for commercial appeal

i'm rootin' for a.

i'm all for commercial success 'cause i want all folks to have access to good music but i'm hopin' that artists don't purposely compromise their genetic style just for the sake of creatin' consumer-friendly music.

I don't know if it beats all the CBS shows, that would surprise me...

when quest said viacom, he probably meant their music properties, as in "106 is the highest rated of the shows on BET, MTV and VH1" which I am fairly certain is true.

It is the highest rated...it consistently beats TRL, and they're having a fit over at MTV trying to figure what the hell is happening over at BET.

so, i'll re-post, do you:

A) make music independant of outside pressure then after the product's complete, hope that it'll have commercial success

B) make music while simultaneously considerin' what's necessary for commercial appeal

from your replies, it seems like you want a larger audience, which is understandable. but how much did this affect the whole production process? i mean, while phrenology was movin' along the creative pipeline, were you askin' yourself, "does this sound good to me?" or "i wonder if this will sound good to 106 & parkers?" i'm just curious.

when i say for me.

meaning to my satisfaction.

when i say consequences, meaning the hip hop i'm accustomed to dosn't appeal to the average joe nowadays

think not?

ask the average joe about "menatally mad".

if they don't get it, then you see what i'm up against.

however, who dosn't want a larger audience? i've been doing this for 10 years, i think it's due time we get to play larger houses that my peers who started on that same level with us in 94 did.

but--in this cliamte of being on universal, i can't call it. if this album flops-- i think it could be curtains. the marketplace is falling apart, and clearly people doing art for arts sake are being totally put out to pasture (see meshell)--

so that is what we are caught in. ask BEP and Jurassic and bilal the headaches that interscope have them going through. i aint complaining. i'm up to the challenge. but this is a whole new game, and i know the rules. it aint fair---but eff it.

did we follow our vison? hell yes
did we comprimise our final vison? fuck no.
did it take forever to make? yep but we got it right.

and that's all that matters

I feel y'all struggle, but remember, be careful what you ask/wish for cause you just may get it....Good Luck!!!!

I think he meant major label support. The labels are still trying to deal with changes in the economy post-9/11 as well as those wrought by the Internet.

In response to Reply # 71

i'm all for the roots getting even bigger and playing larger places but please don't forget about the medium sized venues. i don't think anything can match the enegery of seeing a roots concert at the 930 club. i think the 3/3/01 930 show may be the best concert of my life (im just 19).

don't get me wrong, if the roots can headline an arena tour...with just the roots i would wait in line to get tix, it would be crazy to see what you could do if you had a big concert budget (see talking heads "stop making sence") or if you can fill a bassball staduim or whatever...i'll be there in a heartbeat,

but also PLEASE keep doing smaller shows too, you may have to play the 930 club for a whole week insted of just a weekend...whatever it takes. ive seen you at college/festival shows and they don't live up to seeing you at a place where the whole crowd knows all your songs, all the lyrics, and all want to dance.

Although it seems like rs gave em a 5 to kiss their ass (jagger was "eh," and i didn't care much for the other 2 fogies new shit), what do you feel about beck getting @@@@@? personally, i feel he should be at a @@@@. its a good album, but doesn't show a range of shit, and can be boring if you're not in the mood. but that's just my opinion.

We should just all be happy the Roots got a new album coming out and it may just go plat. Finally they will get the respect and $ that they deserve and htey did it with out selling out. People need to stop with the just make good music. I admit that when I see people acting like they discovered the hottest new thing that they ignored when I played it a year ago for them I just a little annoyed. But whatever the more people who jam the better. If this draws people away from Ja Rule and Nelly then is there any greater reward for us as fans. Cause the more people that bump good music the less crap we will have to listen too.

Yeah, I feel like I'm seeing ?uesto the hardline hip-hop "purist" knitting his brow in frustration when I read this post...even if you agree with most of the editorial in The Source, for me the concept of rating a hip-hop record's quality with a number of units lost its meaning many years ago...it just strikes me as such an obsolete way of validating hip-hop records, plus as some people mentioned, the writers consider the artists' lifestyles and fashion sensibilities when they make their ratings, which is overly judgemental. I mean, they can rattle off a number of mikes to "measure" your record by, but can they tell you who James "Blood" Ulmer is? ?uest, you should find satisfaction for yourself, man.

lemme use this example. a writer has an audience, a group of readers who enjoy his work, almost completely. but the writer himself, has a particular goal in mind - the pulitzer. eventhough he knows he has this group of readers who will continue to support him in his art, he, himself has a personal goal. 4.5 is the man's pulizter prize...nothing wrong with that.

not really. a writer doesn't write with the intention of receivin' a pulitzer. a pulitzer just comes to him/her naturally.

the same should be with artists. they shouldn't create something just 'cause it's likely to receive an award. the reward should come naturally and if it doesn't, who cares, no one needs an award to prove their legitimacy.

that's pretty much pc.

that whole self satisfaction is some nice humble shit, but on the real?

no one out there is thinking 100%--this is for me.

all through voodoo we was dreaming about what our elder influences would think when they heard it.

the reason why riq goes through no less than 5 drafts of verses before he even decides on verse number one is because he's thinking about outdoing and at the same time--getting respect and love from his peers.

and no mc alive--not even the lowest recipient of a source mic (hammer @1/2) can tell you that getting a source classic rating isn't in their dreams.

it's way different now, but pretty much people remember when the source acclaims an album. especially oversees. the same can be said for non hip hop media researchers (snl for example is well aware of our acclaim) who need to know the status of a particular hip hop act that they aren't familiar with.

take that black star review on that online record store some posts up:

now i know at least 300 non hip hop fans (who saw brown sugar this weekend) that are very very curious about mos def, between topdog, and brown sugar and the vanity fair feature. now if the source gave the first record

@@1/2 then gave BOBS a @@@@1/2

what do you think they will grab first?

even my dealer guy at mitchell and ness sportswear mentioned the source ratings when he copped DYWM for the first time.

so to some of us, they hold no weight.

but pretty much they are still considered the hip hop bible to the rest of the world.

and don't confuse the initial post as bitching---again i'm rather shocked. i was really really expecting a @@@1/2, simply because of the musical direction we took it.

hope i shed some light.

I feel you on the statement that noone out there is thinking 100% this is for me -- I don't write like that myself. And I remember when The Source magazine's ratings held a lot of weight universally for hip hoppers -- including for me (years ago). But when the writers at The Source started getting lazy with their analyses of more progressive hip-hop records that certain artists were putting out and their laziness SHOWED IN THE WRITING, I tuned out. I'll never forget how Son Of Bazerk's album blew me away when it was released -- hell, the simple fact that it was released blew me away and this was like '90. And The Source reviewer shitted on it with some real subjective and non-analytical writing, citing something like the crazy rock and roll music on the record. From that time forward, I started thinking that writing like that about hip hop would hamper the culture's creativity as well as what showed in the music. Rather than showing the skills and knowledge to talk about music and its origins, I thought, certain writers can get away with their laziness by simply giving mics. And I'll stand by that judgement on my part to this day.

And you did give some good examples of how that magazine's status can influence some peoples' opinions, but then some of your statements (like no emcee alive would not want a 5 mic rating in The Source) seemed overly subjective to me as well.

At any rate, I'm happy that you guys don't use the editorial in The Source as a guide to what you put in your records.

but--in this cliamte of being on universal, i can't call it. if this album flops-- i think it could be curtains. the marketplace is falling apart, and clearly people doing art for arts sake are being totally put out to pasture (see meshell)--

but, the roots and meshell are in diff'nt situations. from the get-go, meshell didn't have much success. the roots, on the other hand, have tasted success, as evidenced by the gold status of things fall apart. your album was a success without havin' to compromise the characteristic roots sound.

besides, y'all have a pretty loyal fanbase.

and, on this:

You're not stoppin tell they
>give you 5?

nope. 4.5

well, like bonz said, "success is a journey, not a destination"(taken from my nigga pra's sig).

ain't nuthin' wrong with that but if the source is based on a biased rating system, why give it any worth?

actually, what they'll do is grab BOBS, then after diggin' what they hear, will proceed to purchase the first album. that's a process that a lot of folks are familiar with, includin' my self.

You seem to be chasing an existance where the Source loves your album, 106 & Park loves your singles... and Okayplayer.com rides your nuts regardless.

The only group that has that right now is Outkast. If you keep chasing that existance The Roots will lose thier identity and your DYWM fans wont be around to support you. Thats as simple as I can put it without inciting a riot around here.

Sincerely yours,

Make a cut called "FUCK FOUR MICS!"

4 mics That's cool and all,continuity in shit....nm

If you think,it's some groups that can barely get two mics nowadays

I wouldn't sweat it though just look over your shoulder and be like ummm,hmmmm.....Once you let that so called status quo go you can free your mind more on the execution......

I know,I know it matters but really does it...

You want to win 106 & Park?????

*slaps hands together then puts up the picture window gesture*

Just get MusiQ on the stage during the live performance, first, before droppin the video, then switch the beat to some slow wicked tempo like the original tempo of the Al Green intro that Biggie used to death.

Have MusiQ babyoil the flesh for the estrogen persuasion.
A wife beater some sweatpants....Have him work the crowd with few choruses.....hands out to the ladies,on his knees maybe once, and some serious intense energy.

toss out some phernology shirts and promo items.....eventhough most of them will look at the title and be stumped by the "Big College Word"
*fur-nee-ologeee*

The stage is tight so Black(thought) must stand still don't jump around,do some Marvin type ish.....(Beyonce proved that too much is too much)

Insert BET some where in the Chorus.

Right after the performance drop the video.....

Yall share dat- Badu
N E E KeeP Makin music

From this point, I vow to

Reveal is a very good album. I recommend it. For some reason people lost interest in R.E.M. after the highly successful Monster. My favorite R.E.M. album was recorded during the Monster tour - New Adventures in Hi-Fi. After Monster went quadruple platinum, Hi-Fi strangely failed to even go gold. They continue to make very good music, but nobody seems to be listening. Warner has lost a lot of money on their $80 million record contract, to be sure. U2 flopped at the same time as R.E.M., but they've bounced back already while R.E.M. has yet to do so. I don't get it.

regardless i still have even money that the Roots get the front story in the Arts&Lesiure section when the album finally drops
