"Kelo"
Wed Oct-16-02 02:29 PM

is this dude a badass or what?

Does he just mix monitors?
on ANY DESK!?!?
Man I seen that dude on like 15 different systems, and its usually very clean. Speakers are all made of paper so cabinet doesnt matter. I think he knows every component.

off the top
Truth.com Seattle: Jenky system in a Aircraft Hanger mad echo, I believe there were delays every fifty feet.

Green Circle SD: Humble little house ststem that boomed. All QSC amps. Nice
Belly Up SD: Best system in the county

4th and B SD: This system sucks. Phase cancellation all day.
Street Scene SD: Yearly outdoor sound, bare bones

Great American Music Hall SF: great old hall, small stage doesnt allow for a great monitor

does he do all the arena tour joints too?
I heard Skratch got mix skills too.

Kelo needs some fuckin respect!
Give that guy a raise!

i know that any roots show i attend will be on point even if usually the sound system sucks, kelo is definitely under appreciated by most.

the last Beatles concert at the Candlestick, all kinds of shit. I'm an apprentice now, that doesnt decypher what you posted, I guess I need to research. Y'all gotta gem, I'd love to do just one tour as a drum tech (got resume!) just to learn how he groups, eq's and sets all mixes, that way I wont get my ass kicked when I step to doing non coporate gigs.

Basically can someone break down, "How not to get killed as a soundman in hip hop/rock" ???

man, there was ONE time when they were STRUGGLING with the sound. HARD. there was a show in the summer of 2000 in Brixton in London. Slum played, jurassic 5, ozomatli, the roots....but the sound was ASS. it almost came to blows as i recall. but yeah, this theater LOOKED nice, sounded ass.

tight show now that i think about it. thought had his dreads out, which was rare, and he freestyled during a j5/slum cypher on stage.

In response to Reply # 0

here's a question I've wondered about for a long while:

After reading the TRCA liner notes (the parts about sound guys hating to do the Roots), I confirmed this by talking to some people I've worked with in the northeast. The Roots have a bad rep among sound companies.. and I'm interested why. Do The Roots push levels too hard? Demand more out of soundsystems than artists/tours with lower sonic standards? I know that the Roots play more shows than most other bands, and so I imagine that they have higher expectations of what good systems are.
Anyone who could elaborate, that would be super.

Also, i'd love to get in a discussion about the equipment/techniques used at the Roots live shows.. I don't know much besides the microphone requirements and general indications from seeing them play/general sound principles.

Drum kit: two overhead (Shure sm81)Snare(shuresm57) toms (beta87x2)kick (beyer88) Intant replay (directx2) mpc?(two more for stereo) thats 10 just for ?uest. Group one.

Keys, 2 DI's for the Korg 2 for the hammond
14

bass DI+1 sm57 on the amp
16
GTR DI+ sm57
18
Skratch sm58
Thought sm 58
?uest sm58

so that 21 in a simple format.

now verb, returns, for each instument.

monitor mixes:
Mix one ?uest 2 wedges
mix two Ben one wedge
mix 3 Hub one wedge+sub
mix 4 Kamal one wedge
mix 5 for vox 2 for thought
mix 6 for vox 2 for skratch

thats potentially 9 amps, plus processing sends to each mix.

not includung FOH
4 subs along the front
4 tops a side (stereo)
2 front fills (mono)

delays? two a side every 50 feet?

thats a lot of work for a hip hop show.

Now imagine the okp tour. Who's got what mic? what mix are they listening for? M1 wants more snare in mix two but Guru's on in 3 minutes and wants less. Ahhhh I'm a nerd!

I've seen ?uest use the full line of kick mics, including the beta 52 and the d112. Also, I've seen him Shure KSM32's for overheads. Is the instant replay what they're using?

>Keys, 2 DI's for the Korg 2 for the hammond

Hammond or Rhodes?

I've never seen them mic the bass amp before, just DI. And btw, Hub uses a Zoom 506 bass multi-effects pedal.

Scratch uses a Shure SM57 Beta.

Rhodes not Hammond (my bad)

Scratch uses a Beta 57A.
All Vocals are Beta 58's
NO SM's unless the company doesn't have Beta's and I didn't bring our mic pac with us. I always bring BT and Scratch's mics and a Beta 52 Kick.

Right now we're at about 34 Channels and 9 Monitor Mixes.

As to our reputation among snound companies...They quickly realize that selling a school a half ass sound system (lowest bidder) can get you fucked up. WE've taxed a few and word gets around. I try to use the same companies (National Audio, Rainbo, Clair Bros., Rat Sound and Soundlab just to name a few.)all the time but we play in some weird spots and i have to bring in companies that i'm not familiar with. THEY SOON LEARN!!!

Peace,
Keith Mack

what is your favorite house system to work with? Clair customs, RAT traps, McCauleys, particular arrays? what about amplification?
in semi-relation, I recently got to hear the Adamson (canada) Y-axis mid-high array (it was used at The Roots show at UMass-Amherst last year, with Ludacris/Guster) and it sounds great.

we are problematic because promoters can or will not supply us with the proper sound requirements that we need to rock the mic right.

i got soundcheck in a bit so i can go all into it. im sure there is something archived. but i will say that people respond to volume. when the kick is kicking your stomach and the snare is crisp and bright (mind you--we are a band, so we have challenge on our hands because we have to make these instruments sound big enough as if it were "real rap music" coming at you. we don't trigger the drums (just recently added snaps and claps to accent the snares) so we have to make sure there is punch and warmth in the kick, and compete with the bass without feedback. add cutting the rest of the instruments and you have a sonic nightmare if we dont get our system.

on the real--its a long story KEITH?!?!?!

but trust us---we trying to go to a whole nother level with sound. we gonna do some things ---providing we can get proper support on the tour tip.
