"Dead Prez VS. The Roots"

I just read yet another article where the DPz talk about purposely distancing themselves from "conscious rappers" like Mos Def, Talib kweli and The Roots because it limits their fans to "white people". Although I understand where they're coming from, it kinda makes me upset because I been a fan of those artists from day one (I'm at every show in Atlanta too, I put my money where my mouth is) and I'm as black as they come.

Since they've even gone as far as changing their style from the first album, i guess my question is this: With this verbal tirade against artists like Mos and Talib (both strongly supported by The Roots and Okayplayer.Com) I wonder if they're making a mistake by shutting out that core audience that they've built up so far?

Heck, the only reason i saw them perform before is because they were on the same bill as The Roots one year...what do you guys think...

whether or not their audience likes the music

they care if their audience wants to join and fight for the things their music speaks about

and to the death

where is this article of which you speak?

it's funny how they talk about only whites embracing their music. that phenomenon is not exclusive to dead prez. all hip-hop artists draw mostly white consumers.

If I were the DPz, I wouldn't feel very UNcomfortable delivering my content to a show full of white people, as they often end up having to do. The sight of white kids throwing up a fist for the cause makes me cringe. Kind of like when I see girls dance to mysoginistic rap songs. Must be frustrating.

As far as I know, the DPz are activists (or whatever is the appropriate term) first and artists second, whereas the Roots, Mos Def, Kweli, while they may reveal their political views in their work, are concerned primarily with creating art.

since they were teenagers and they were always activists. as a matter of fact, when i found out they were rappers i was shocked because they didn't run with they "i wanna be the next tribe" cats back in college. they probably got tired of seeing how every young brother knew the words to biggie songs and figured they could use the music to spread the message. but they always had the message. they even started this group called NPDUM
National Peoples Democratic Uhuru Movement and they were doing demonstrations and community events all the time.

but i am not yet convinced that it is deserved of a cringe that a white person might want to throw up a fist at a dead prez show as a sign of unity regarding what is being put forth from the stage, even if that white person doesn't identify or completely agree with everything that is being put forth.

if they really hope for their revolution to take form and be affective, I agree that they should encourage the people's army to embrace all races

I'm pretty damn sure that's not happening. Any white people tossin' cash at those racists need to turn their woofers off and listen to the damn lyrics. I don't care about anykind of skill they got, if they hate on white people, and talk about other artists only having white fans, then they're racists, and they don't get a damn dollar of mine, nor should they get a dollar from any other white person who feels singled out for appriciating great fuckin music.

that was in the complex magazine right. i dont think dp abuse mos&kweli by saying that they dont want to be in the same class of hip hop because no one likes to be label. dp is not in this to please white people and i understand that a 100 percent.the music is made by the people for the people.look what happen in the late 60's &early70's when white actors supported and gave money to the panthers.as soon as the party started to fade the white support dissapeared.dp is not a fad this is real. and this is more than a "hip hop" group.

is 1) why they are holding Roots/Blackstar/etc accountable for their fan base. And 2) so they are distancing themselves from like-minded artists in favor of what?

What I think they need to realize about white fans of their music is that these are liberal minded people who in many ways feel the same way do about the corruption in the political system. And since there is no one else speaking on these issues as directly as they are then naturally these people are attracted to it. Why does having their support deflate DPz message? Don't see it, esp. since these same people are helping them eat.

They are distancing themselves from these artist in favor of truth and integrity.

If you listened to them you wouldn't have to ask, why having support from surburban white audiences could deflate their message.

On helping them eat... Please muthafukas was eating good before they dropped a cd contrary to your ignorant beliefs, they don't need you or your support to eat.

In response to Reply # 6

I'm not exactly sure what dead prez is trying to do, they fashion themselves after Public Enemy, right? Even their shows have been mostly white audiences, historically. I've seen them in concert with the roots, talib, slum village, all them cats. I don't think they're flat out racist, they're just speaking out against "the man". I agree with some of their points, but a lot of the other points are questionable.

... I'm 26 years old. I have a master's degree in macro-social work practice. Macro refers to practice on a community or organizational level. This further refers to community organizing, advocacy, policy development, lobbying, and so on. I am also a certified substance abuse / alcoholism counselor / educator. Essentially, my life (outside of the home) revolves around advocacy work of many kinds and forms ...

... I would have to say that you're wrong about your assumption of my world-view and about the subject at hand. Both words have hateful and degrading connotations. Historically, both words have been used as a form of verbal oppression; most often when they're said, the intent is to cause harm. While it is OBVIOUS TO ALL that the word "nigger" is the more vicious of the two forms of verbal bigotry (because of the more extensive history of this word), both words express the same form of cultural, racial, and practical ignorance. And, I cannot see how an intelligent person could see one as being unacceptable, but the other as acceptable. Do the math ...

... That would make you 1/2 intelligent and culturally-competent, and 1/2 ignorant and culturally-defunct ...

>How do you identify yourself?

... Whenever I have to bubble-in one of those "ethnicity" titles, I bubble-in "other." That's how I identify ...

... If you want to take this issue further, though, we're going to end up getting into theology. There are some schools of belief that trace the origins of the physical manifestation of "me," and there are others who see the physical manifestation of "me" as being less than important. This school of belief does not see "me" and "this body" as being synonymous ...

... But, this is getting away from the issue. What we're talking about is the fact that you cannot be half-pregnant; you either are, or you're not. Similarly, you either live by the belief that one's skin color, ethnicity, or culture allow you to generalize intelligence, ability, or character qualities of that person, or you don't. Any logic you follow which says, "Well, you can generalize these things about these folks, and those things about those folk, but you can't generalize anything about my folk," is flawed ...

We definately won't until we(blakk people) have to stop explaining to white people why we rage the way we do about the situation at hand. The shit is obvious, it ain't pretty, nice or palatable for your bullshit political correctness. Political correctness was divised by the white liberal media in order to make themselves feel better about isms in general especially racism. What you white folks need to realize is that blakk folks don't need you in their movements to make them legitimate. entitled or not?

rage has a point in that maybe his goal is not a utopian vision in which we work for equality. maybe his vision is one in which people of color take on more responsibility for themselves. which is very similar to the mentality of a group like dead prez. they believe that help from sympathetic or empathetic white people is not the answer to the black peoples troubles. they want to wake up their brethern to what it is they are participating in...to how they collude with their own marginaliation and exploitation. a bunch of white people liking the message is fine but that isn't who those cats are trying to change.

on another note, the DPz ain't perfect. they got a lot of hate and animosity and much too much is misdirected. But they wear their hearts and views on their sleeves even if it means losing some of thier audience. that is artistic integrity if i ever saw it. i am uncomfortable with their prejudices, anger, and super-socialists leanings (i believe in burkean change and if that leads to socialism so be it). but i can still enjoy their message and way of delivering it. and its easier to swallow than some of the crap that i have bobbed my head to in the past that was about nothing but bullshit escapism, consumerism, and insecurity.

those who agree with you? it really weakens the reader's confidence in what you are saying when you need to ally yourself to those who seem to agree rather than having your belief and sticking to it in spite of who else parrots a similar view.

BTW, as a black man, I have to say that you don't speak for all black men, or all intelligent black men, or all self-aware black men or all conscientious black men. not that you said that literally, but your arguments imply that you are part of some vanguard. you are not. and the quicker you start thinking for yourself and realizing that rhetoric is meaningless to a self-determined human being you may start having more compelling dialogues instead. i sure hope the white people who you come into contact with don't get fooled into believing that those of us who reject mainstream values all end up embracing some dogmatic belief system that makes us feel important relative to someone else's unimportance.

how little you seem to comprehend what it is others are trying to communicate with you. it seems your most common refrain when someone disagrees with you is to try to invalidate everything that has been said by asking for more cogent responses. for the record, i think it is a waste of time but allow me to be as cleare and logical as possible:

the reason why i responded to you is because i did not feel you were aware of your transparence. few people who are reading your commentary are impressed or really find what you have to say insightful. most see you for what you really are and that is a person who hides behind rhetoric and a group identity rather than putting forth your own thinking, not propaganda for the group you get your identity from.

your style of writing is not intellectual or intelligent. it is convoluted with terminology that you don't seem to have a grasp of (or are too eager to use and so you end up wasting five dollar words on 2 bit thoughts.) yet you ask others to speak to you with clarity and directness. that is call hypocrisy.

secondly, you seem to be interested in putting forth your socio-political views, than really having discussions with the individuals who sek to debate with you. now there is nothing wrong with being passionate about one's beliefs, but there is a something called prudence. one has to realize who they are speaking to and adapt their language to that group. now you can probably retort that you care nothing about the audience and only speak the truth, but just as a father is careful with a small child with delicate issues of truth, so should a savant such as yourself be careful when exposing the masses to what you seem to think of as earth shattering revelations. in other words, someone who identifies himself as intelligent should use that intelligence to tailor his words to his audience.

really brother, i know time is going to humble you but it might be nice to just keep you mouth quiet a little more often until that day. just trust in an "older god" telling you that you need to keep a lid on it a little more, because trust that you are going to feel foolish one day when you realize you were just half parrot (repeating a bunch of rhetoric without any judgment of its applicability or nuance) and half peacock (strutting around, flashing your plummage in an attempt to attract some attention).

but you probably will dismiss all this as straight nonsense...so I won't comment anymore. plus i could be completely wrong about you and maybe I am groveling at the feet of someone who is more mentally and emotionally evolved than myself. but maybe this message will stay tucked away in the back of your subconscious and help you one day. if it does...you are welcome.

value of people who write for public consumption and need to maintain reader interest. you on the other hand beg others for more completeness and detail in others' commentary and then turn around and ask for conciseness when you get the very completeness you recently asked for. you are vacillating back and forth like a fool. no one is buying it my brother. and although focus helps one to communicate a central theme, it is also not required to make clear relevant points. in other words, you just don't know how to discuss what is at hand and instead try to pretend like what has been put forth is beneath you. stop embarassing yourself. no one is buying it.

the following quotes are being pulled from your responses to this topic:

"They have no questionable points! Please name them & lets build!"

"What "ethnicity" are you & what's your age? Because your query is tantamount to a highly under-developed socio-politico
historical & cultural world view. There is no comparison nor parallel relevance in what you have highlighted/referenced.
What are you currently studying? & what studies have you conducted that lead you to this asinine synopsis?"

"re-read your retort for your composition of contradiction(s).
& I appreciate your "clever" attempt at composing an equation to
"illustrate" some form of intelligence...however, it was merely a decoy/cosmopolitan ploy of semantics that furthers leaves the
issue un-addressed."

"I mean really...You're rambling w/no centralized concept, theme & focus."

"You did not make the statement(s) that needed clarification & if even still, you DID NOT clarify what was needed to be clarified. So once again, wtf r u talking about?"

"You're responses are inundated w/lack of focus & concise points."

you see intelligently95, this is the majority of how you discuss things. you put fourth your own rhetoric and refuse to discuss anything that someone says in rebuttal. much of your rhetoric is just embarassingly simple-minded and reeks of an inferiority complex. and then you speak of you and your comrades. who cares if you have five or five thousand other people screwed up just like you who follow the same illogical rules that you follow? stand on your own two feet and discuss what you believe and be prepared to defend it instead of all these other logical fallacies. have you ever heard of "ad misericordia", "argumenta ad hominem", "ad ignorantia", and "ad populem". these are four of the classic types of false logic and you employ them well. you present yourself as an educated man so perhaps you would like to discuss something with clarity and conciseness without using these crutches that prove nothing but the fact that you are more concerned with perpetuating an agenda then having a sincere discussion.

and maybe the real reason you don't follow me is because you just don't have the gobs of raw intellect you claim to have. i will cite and example of why a person who claims to be intelligent should be able to piece together the 'ramblings" of those of inferior intellect: a small child communicates with his parents although he has yet to develop a large vocabulary or correct grammar and sentence construction. the experienced adult pieces together what the child is trying to say...in spite of the child's limited ability to express itself. similarly the parent expresses himself back to the child in simple terms until the child comprehends...

but in this discussion who is having a hard time comprehending? in other words who has taken on the role of small child who is unaware of his lack of sophistication and who needs constant re-explanation to understand what is being discussed.

i don't know why i am even responded except there seems to be an ounce of intelligence in you that I am trying to appeal to. what is the matter man? are you scared you won't be special if you cannot assert yourself as the most clear thinking insightful person around? man this is a community. why don't you join it and stop using this website as a means to feel self-important. i cannot let it continue to go on without addressing you and at least asking you to stop it.

that is just fucking whack. if someone ( a non black person) said the exact same thing about black people or any other race people would be up in fuckin arms. i liked a couple of dp's tracks but their beats suck pretty much and there rhymes are kinda shitty as well, nothing impressive. that shit is straight up racist. just because it is a black group doesn't make that shit alright there is no double fucking standard. fuck that militant shit anyway.
what the fuck is the point anyway, seems like it is a step backwards.

i wasnt the one who did deadprez.net that was a different jake. i like DP because i enjoy their music, i think it is well done for the most part and that despite all of the stupid shit they say there is a really good message there, i just try to block out all of the anti white comments, i also used to have a problem with their use of "cracker" i thought it was the equivilent of me calling one of the the N word. m1 explained to me that they use the word as a reference to all of the racist, war hungry, extremist whites not referring to white people as a whole. although i still dont really like the word that makes alot of the problem go away for me. basically i like them for their music and for the fact that m1 was a totally down to earth and intelligent person and treated me with as much respect as i have for him, i just try to ignore all the bullshit.

isn't this the same thing as using the n word as a reference to all the racist, war hungry, extremist blacks and not black people as a whole?

just curious

that stic.man maintains the anger toward white people a lot more than m1. It is important to note that everyone's belief systems get developed as they grew and environment can play a strong roll in that. M1 grew up in Brooklyn and Stic.man grew up in North Florida (which is more like deep south Georgia socio-economically speaking than the touristy central and southern regions). One thing you have to understand about the deep south is that it is still very segregated and there is a more pronounced lack of tolerance for other races. There isn't hardly enough of an Asian or Latin population in cities like Macon or Jacksonville or wherever to really talk about multi-culturalism. Its a culture of mostly Christian or Christian influenced black people and white people and from the first day to the last day i lived in North Florida, I was constantly sensing the derision. I am not making excuses for stic.man simply saying that i am not surprised that he perpetuates that animosity more. Also you have to realize that some very traumatizing things can happen to a person while growing up and if he is segregated from white people and he has a few traumatic experiences than he won't have enough interaction to not internalize the belief that white people create all of the chaos that he has to deal with. Think about living in the segregated south. Sometimes the only white people who come to your house are the police and bill collectors. That can shape a man's psyche. I think he will mellow out as he gets older though.

When its all said and done, we know its people who let greed and insecurity drive them to exploit or try to control the masses who are responsible for the current american landscape. some of those people are poor and some of those people are president. its not really a black or white thing but because it was white people (not all white people) who almost exclusively had the power to maintain the status quo and push for undermining of the masses so they would be enslaved by their own values, guys like stic.man talk of crackers. i think DPz' white fans understand that they aren't talking about al white people at all but the holders of excessive amounts of private power and influence who weild it in lack of interest for what is good for the psyches of the people, who just happen to be white much of the time.

its socio-economic beef. Its about the haves and the have-nots. Dead Prez just simplifies the issue and polarizes people by uses the white-black binary when really the whole shit is about money and class. I dont disagree with what they're doing on principle because its not harmful to black people or white people - its meant to provoke. Good. I like that. If they have to controversial in order to do so then fine and so what if their shit is overly reductive and so on?
Big up anything that rocks a boat in need of rocking.
Just dont forget that there is more to all this than what they say. Its about marginalized, disenfranchised people. Black v. white is only a symptom/aspect of this larger problem.

its like when malcolm realized how much he had folded hatred into his own growth as a human being and he had to leave the nation at his own peril. he also had to realize that he had brought a lot of brothers into the fold with hate and animosity even though he had at least got them doing some thinking and reading for themselves (even if few were willing to break with the idealogical stance of the nation...what can you do when your identity and sense of belonging are more powerful than your desire to speak and think in truthful terms).

i think dead prez (and most importantly stic.man) will have a moment of truth where rhey will have to change their language and admit that the distillation of white people into greedy capatilists is not right. its just like common and his homophobic lyrics. i think he was changing in his view of homosexuality over the last few years or so, but it took him a while to actually reverse his stance because that takes integrity and humility. for a group like dead prez, they risk losing some of their fan base of they don't keep the anger directed at someone they can name in one or two sylables. Its much harder to say 'please bring change or humility to the people who deny their spirit and humanity for the sake of seeking an unattainable security in an implicitly insecure world, all the while exploiting and attempting to control others through their massive fear and self-loathing" than it is to say 'fuck crackers'. I mean "fuck crackers" just has a ring to it that you ain't going to get when you treat every person as a complex individual with a soul, who has just as much right to live and evade their fears as the next man or woman.

But as a socially conscious couple of brothers I think they are going to relinquish the vulgar language one day...but in the meantime I think they are doing some damage by appealing to the more visceral side of their audiences. or mabye i should say they aren't doing as much good as they could if they let go of the anger, especially the anger directed at groups so broad and diverse as white people.

I think that to distance yourselves from artists who others might see as like-minded might not be the smartest move but I can understand their hesistancy in having a mostly white fan base. I mean, essentially, thats what happened to Public Enemy. Something changes when you're talking about revolution for your people and freedom and most of your fans ain't you. Some things we as Black people need to keep in house for awhile and let it grow before we let everybody have at it. They're in a similar situation that The Coup is in. The flip side is, at some point, even when you hate the system, you have to use it in your favor. And being anti-capitalist only works to a certain degree for a music artist that truly wants a large fan base. Also, I'm of the school of thought that believes that The Roots, Common, and to a lesser respect, Mos & Talib, are not necessarily what I would dub "conscious rappers". No, theyre not bling blingin or talking about bullshit all the time but they're not necessarily always positive either. To me thats not a bad thing because to me it just makes them more well-rounded than your average rapper. The point is Dead Prez brings their message with EVERY SONG. Not alot of cats can say that. And no, I don't agree with them on every point but I do agree with 99.9% of it and feel that if our kids are gonna listen to some gangsta type shit then let em hear Dead Prez!

Furthermore, trying to wake up Black people is HARD work. Sad thing is, more white people feel what I'm trying to do it seems than us. It gets discouraging sometimes. When I'm out and about promoting, the white people ask for info and then look at it and say thats a greats idea while Black people sit and question me to death about the most insignificant points. But hey, I love y'all so Ima keep fighting.

signature-co.

Think the deal with pulling away form the white fan base is that one would have to wonder how many slaps to the face (so to speak) they would be willing to take before they just pulled out of 'the cause' all together. One owuld rather be supported by the group for whom they toil. Unfortunately though I think the likelyhood of this happening -- the large black fan base & active support for upliftment of Negroids, aint't there. Niggas is trying to dance while telling sad songs not get lifted.

Getting back to the Original question...

The DPz said in that article in the new Complex magazine (as well as other places) that they didn't want to be associated with acts like Mos Def and Talib (and The Roots, since they are constantly working together) because they want a more "Urban" audience i guess. They didn't want to "ban all white people", they just wanted more black people people to see that they were'nt just some black militant book readers.

I have heard tracks from the new "Walk Like a Warrior" album (They came to Atlanta and had a listening session) and you can see they are going in a different direction than on the first album. I can't blame them for wanting to get that "Jay-Z dough", but to totally alienate the fans (and fellow hip-hop artists) that brought them this far is crazy.

In more than one article they've mentioned that they wanna get closer to the streets. My interpretaion of that after listening to the new stuff has been this: They are gonna dumb down their music and not be as political as they have been in the past. Evidence the fact that they have abandoned most of the production team from the first album and enlisted more mainstream kats like Kanye West to do the beats. They wanna shift focus from the audience that cares about lyrics or content, the "book readers", if you will, and focus more on those people that just like hot beats. They constanly have said recently they "they are just like regular black people". That "they sold crack" and "do regular stuff" too.

They aren't the only artists that have come out with this opinion. The Roots themselves talk about this in the recent issue of The Sauce. And DJ Hi-Tek made it clear in interviews that he's more likely to hang with Too Short than Cody Chesnutt. But should the artists just say "thanks for getting me in the door, now screw off! I'm HARDCORE like Clipse and 50 Cent Now!"

They should be careful or they will fall into that discount Arrested Development and Digable Planets shelf at the music store...

What DP needs to do is go all-out, ball-to-the-wall style like Black Flag did back in their heyday. They need to get in a van, with all their equipment - turntables, mics, speakers, etc. and do a garage tour of ghettos across the country. Make the shows DIY and super-hyped. If they are activists first and artists second, they won't care about not making money, so long as they spread the word.

If they want to enlarge their black fan base, they need to speak to the people. It sure ain't gonna get down via tv, radio or any other mainstream media device, because we all know DP is too radical for all that. They actually speak the truth.

As a white fan of DP, I can understand why they would want to increase the number of black heads at their shows, but I also beleive that alienating a white audience who might agree with all the politics behind the music would be a terrible idea. DP's biggest strength right now, probably, is all the radical white kids out there - from anarchists to backpackers - who enlighten the ignorant about real shit.

. . .

So it goes.

i agree fully. As a a puerto rican with light skin i just feel un comtherable as well because it seems they are speaking out agianst us. Whatever it is i still like them, just feel weird.

-LOL. shut the fck up pssy
learn about ur culture

for kat up a few posts.. ur an ignorant elitist thinking that because u are from the streets u cant be intallectual. do u know how many kats are smarter than u but only listen to radio stuff because that's all they're exposed to? i dont think u do. it took me to get into college and dig into a whiteboys crates to find out what kats like mos were talking about. i didnt even know nothing about an underground.. truth be told i didnt know much about hiphops history, hiphop integrity and purpose. if i listened to a song by a kat like mos i'd find it rambling because i couldnt get his point of view.. i just heard big words.. so love to kat above for making it clear that as a white person u can help expose kats.

i dont think dead prez should be alienating their white fanbase.. thats stupid. by that they're being elitists and unreal. u cant have a guarilla revolution in the u.s. hang that up. theres a longer road ahead than they think if thats their plan. they gotta just do their part and get their message out.. its not about what u wanna do but what u can do. and the black man taking power (land, business, organizing) is the only way...

so them "dumbing down" to the streets is not a bad idea.. maybe if they put a pop song out it will open kats to what theyre rilly about and their early catalogue.. in fact.. im almost sure that it will. Jay-z has done more for america than bob dylan and his 1,700 albums. he's told them they can be themself and be confident by it, and to live up to what they want by any means possible. and once ur that ur gonna speak for urself.. u dont need no preechy bullsht to tell u how to do that.

as far as dissing mos and kwa. i dont have a prez album and i havent followed them, so its not fare to talk on their part and what theyve done.. although i know their message is pro progression which is great.
but i do know that kwa and mos are mos definattelly activists before artists.
they own the oldest and i believe only black bookstore in brooklyn and often attend rallys and such.
because mos is out making movies and kwa is doing his thing doesnt mean theyve leaned off their focus. stop thinking they are for u, when they are for a bigger cause.
if com gotta do a coke commercial to push platinum so that on his next album he can bring his message to 1 million people, and get one million people to pick up his old catalogue so be it.

mama didnt raise no fool

Well argued points in your last post… I guess what I feel is that while I love for my favorite artists to keep making the music that I enjoy, I also want them to elevate and change with the times. But the Musicians with the most longevity are the ones that never lose their core audience while they GRADUALLY make a transition. Artists like Outkast and The Roots have done this.

The DPz can do whatever they want with their career and music. I just think it strange that given how difficult it is to break through with ANY kind of large audience in the music biz, why turn your back on your fans and supporters by saying “we don’t like the people that are liking us so we gotta start all over. And by the way, don’t mention us in the same sentence as those pesky ‘conscious rappers’ that sell white people like.” I know that that was not a direct quote, but that sums up the impression I’m getting from them so far.

Now that I think about it, I wonder if that is the core of what happened with the D’Angelo vs. The Roots situation...

Problem is that, the unenlightened core to which DP wants to reach, will be less likely to tag along if YOU are attempting to deliver the message, I think. Thus they attempt distance & alienation. Personally, I say let push the dregs to fall by the wayside. Put the message out allow for enlightenment & change, but some of the cats DP says they want to reach for are the ones I want to reach out for the A.K. for, and I have tamed my never fully realized bloodlust.

I saw the political bands of the '80's. I agree the DIY ethic seems like the pure route for an activist band. But really, what the fuck did Crass, the DK's, or any other mostly political band ever accomplish through music? They were just preaching to the choir.

I don't think music is a powerful form of political expression. It can be, for some people, but not as a means to reach the masses. Most people think of music as "art" and "entertainment" and won't take musicians seriously on political issues.

It isn't right NOW in the UNITED STATES.

Bob Marley had the two leaders of Jamaica's opposing political parties clasping hands on stage to end the bloodletting of their factions in Kingston's streets.

Peace
This new direction that you say DP's in now about to venture into? I don't see it. Did you really listen to Walk Like A Warrior, or how about Fifty In A Clip.

If you truly have the mind state that of a Black Nationalist (which DP's do) you wouldn't give a flying fuck if a white man or white woman feel's alienated by your statement about your fanbase. Because you are a Black Nationalist first not an artist like Mos, Talib and the rest.

Dead Prez is for Black People!

Like Stickman said at the show at S.O.B.'s white people that want to help let's talk reparations that's it!

" Laws belong to those who write them, and to those who use them to control the resources of a society. It does not matter if a law is written in neutral terms. What really matters is wether that law is enforced non-discriminately. Laws are just words written on books.- Amos N. Wilson"

I've only heard a few of thier songs. I'm feeling all the ones Ive heard. I agree with them wanting a more "Urban" audience or wanting thier message to reach thier people. I think maybe they are saying that they want the message to reach people that will "act" and join in on the cause as oppose to people just wanting to be entertained...but the message is coming through music.

They gotta face it: White people buy more records and come to more shows than black people. Plus when they came to Cleveland the show was promoted by a "white" club. Not that the club/promoters being "white" matters but the promoter marketed the show in a regular way.

I think if they wanna use performances as a medium to get thier message out, they need to take part in the promotion of thier shows or choose a different medium to perform. If not, they will run into a crowd that is more concerned with being entertained than recieving the message and then dealing with activism. Maybe they should start setting up "speaking" engagements at halls instead of shows at clubs.

i don't think they're racist at all. i don't think they DON'T want the roots/etc's fan base... they just don't want to LIMIT themselves to that fan base. and they feel that if they align themselves closely with those artists, they will limit themselves to only having fans that are roots fans or whatever. i don't think they're racist, and i don't think they were trying to diss any particular person or group. they just don't want to limit themselves.

does that make sense?

i just saw them on sunday in anaheim and i didn't get the impression that they were against having white fans at all.

It's kind of funny to me reading the posts about the subject. Mostly the people who are concerned about whether or not DPz is anti-white or concerned about their views of white people are white people. Wondering, "do they like us or not" Who cares, this is just the problem. DPz are artists and activists and they are making empowering hip hop music to get their message out and speak to people of color all over the world. They are not making music for white folks and they are not generally concerned with what white folks think of them or their music, but instead of supporting it and leaving it at that, their white fans, on this post and in general are more concerned if they are liked by DPz rather than taking their messages in and maybe going out there are doing something about the injustices they speak of or spread their messages.

and, as a white individual, I don't think they are anti-white or racist. I agree with most of what they are saying. I've met m-1 and stic.man, I've read a lot of interviews with them and have been to a couple of their shows and I've listened to all their music. Yes, they say things about white people, they say crackers and talk about white cops, etc. but they are referring to the racist, oppressive whites that exist and that have opressed people of color for so long. I don't have a problem with them using the word "cracker" as that word refers to a racist white person. I believe, and correct me if I'm wrong, but the word "cracker" was derived from a white slavemaster cracking a whip against a slave. sure calling a white person a cracker to some might be the equivalent of using the "N" word, but cracker carries such less historical meaning and significance in this world. DPz has a right to harbor a lot of anger and say the word cracker and a connotation for racist whites.

When DPz talk about white folks in their music they talk about the racist ones. when they said "running up on the crackers in they city hall" they talk about the white government officials that have and continue to lead a government that still enforces racist and discriminatory laws and policies.

In their interviews DPz has said they are not all anti-white, but they make music for black folks and they expect black folks to be at their shows and be the majority of their audience because their message speaks on issues affecting themselves and other people of color. They have said they appreciate their white fans and the white activists and have said there is a place for white people in the social justice movement, but not always at the forefront. They said this is a movement to free Africans and people of color and white people can be involved as long as their motives are the right ones and not involved for credibiilty or to be recognized as doing something good. What I think they are referring to is the history of so called liberal whites who instead of fighting for these causes on the frontlines as many people of color do, they are the ones donating money instead and gettting their names in the paper or are getting the media attention as do a lot of wealthy hollywood white folk. enjoy them for their music, but more for their message, don't take what they are saying for granted, otherwise go buy a Ja Rule record.

anyway, these are just some of my thoughts, sorry about the length of the post.

peace.

... Sorry, I was trying to put a link to a posting in "General Discussions" by a girl who took some females with her to a Dead Prez show just this past week; she was talking about how she had to sit around waiting while her girl-friends got tossed by the DPZ after the show. She noted that they weren't eating any salad on futons ...

In response to Reply # 45

I came of age during the "Golden Era" of hip hop. That being the case, It Takes A Nation of Millions and Yo!Bum Rush the Show had a huge, dare I say it transforming effect on me. It Takes A Nation of Millions exposed me to so many names, so many ideas, most notably Malcolm, Huey, and Assata. I still remember just sitting and staring at the picture of PE in a jail cell standing on the flag, or listening to Show Em Whatcha Got on the way to school in the morning, feeling a great sense of both pride and anger. I remember the first time I noticed on the case of Yo! the small type print that read, "The Government's Responsible." Anyway, those albums sent me on a mission to find out about myself, a mission that was reinforced with Fear of A Black Planet. I went through a "militant" phase in my life when every extra moment was spent contemplating the presence/pervasiveness/influence/machinations of white supremacy. I was actually conducting my day to day behavior while keeping in mind the tenets of Neely Fuller's People's Independent Compensatory Code...this book was on a list of books that Harry Allen/Chuck D said every black person should read that was published in Spin...it basically laid out that any activity, thought, endeavor that a person of color engaged in that wasn't in opposition to white supremacy was a waste of time...I read books like Enemies:The Clash of Races, The Iceman Inheritance, The Isis Papers, and I loved them...I loved the vitriol of H. Rap and Stokely...I felt pride when I read about and saw the images of these brave, angry, intelligent young brothers who weren't touting some peaceful resistance philosophy...I had pictures of them everywhere...having grown up surrounded by nothing but white superheroes and without a father, they were my very own Black Justice League and Father Figure rolled up intoone...but somehow I always thought there was something a little bit too easy about all of it, the basic equation, white=bad/evil, black=good seemed overly simplistic...and no, I didn't glean this simple equation from all of my reading, but I felt it was somehow implied...I knew deep down that evil was more intrinsic to man than color, more fundamental than that...anyway, I kinda feel Huey when he wrote in Revolutionary Suicide that he was never able to authentically and honestly hate people on the basis of their color, and I will tell you now, I have and have had a lot of enmity towards white people, and I would like to think that I separate their historical/collective actions from those of specific individuals, but sometimes the lines are blurred...I do feel a bit disturbed/disgusted when I see white boys with "dreads" next to me at a show...or white girls in stereotypical white girl voices talking about how cool the act is and so on, or passing a joint to the dreadlocked brother next to them...

Anway, I'm rambling, this is my point...I have feelings of ambivalence about Dead Prez...I remember Chuck D. saying a long time ago that PE would be replaced by newer, angrier voices...but are these brothers one of those voices?...I appreciate them more because of what they represent, and the context they are in...but as far as them intrinsically, I don't think they are that great as far as emcees go, to me they are basically rhyming rhetoric that anyone who was studied the works of Fanon and the BPP has already been exposed to a thousand times over...granted, not everyone has studied The Wretched of the Earth or To Die For the People, but to those of us who have, well to me at least, they seem unimaginative...but then again, perhaps what I call a lack of imagination or craftmanship is what some would call a very necessary directness...maybe they are trying to hit the "proletariat" so to speak and don't want to wrap up their words in riddles and artsy fartsy metaphors...Don't get me wrong, I like them and all, I listen to them every now and then, but they just don't blow me away...I think Boots is more insightful, clever, but somehow less compelling than the DP's...

Back to the point, my questions are as follows:

1. What do you think is so insightful/profound/informative/deep about their lyrics?

2. Do you think they are actually good emcees, or do you just like what they rhyme about? Can one separate the two?

3. If you believe that they are sincere, activists first and artists second, why?

4. I remember Lord Jamar saying that when he heard them rhyme and reference Ho Chi Minh(I think), he knew that he had to sign them because he had never heard that before. Isn't it possible that they are pimping an image? Sliding into an uncontested niche? I mean how many other militant rappers are out there right now? It's an insulated position, almost critique free. The last time I posted about Dead Prez I was accused of being a "cracker." It's like you can't criticize them as artists without being accused of opposing their message or ideology and I don't think the two are unseparable.

Let's face it, ideals expressed through music won't change many people except the people who are real music lovers and who are really in to lyrics and checking references. Music is mostly personal, not political. For most people music is just a nice backdrop to what they are doing.

Dead Prez has mucho libido for white groupies, go figure.

"If life is prison, then music is the yardtime"--Gift of Gab

"I've been a big genesis fan ... take the lyrics to "Land of Confusion," in which a singer addresses the problem of abusive political authority. This is laid down with a groove funkier and blacker than anything Prince or Michael Jackson-or any other black artist of recent years, for that matter-has come up with ... yet as danceable as the album is, it also has a stripped-down urgency that not even the overrated Bruce Springsteen can equal"--American Psycho

"I'm tryin' to read your poetry but I'm helpless like a rich man's child"--Bob Dylan

"The only thing you owe the past is wasted time"--Beck

Do yourself a favor,
Be your own savior.

we all playing this game. trust me.
mos is staying with both feet in terra firma in the acting world because there he can be a whale in a small pond. you always hear mos talk about "doing joints with the lox, or beanie, or nelly even" just to let you know that he aint just known for underground hip hop joints.

i'm sure that deep down phrenology is our middle finger to underground/neo soulphites. a lil smacking the hand that feeds us (but what a beautiful smack it is).

talib probably thinking that getting kayne west will get him "love in the streets".

and i'm sure that DPs made that remark.

see, all those notions are misguided. cause out of all those acts: the roots see their audinece the most than any of these acts.

and for some strange reason it is absolutely baffling to em. so baffling that they can't even believe it.

black people have never. ever ever ever been anything but tastemakers to black music. even the black music charts are run by 70% non black consumers. we set the trends, but believe you and me:

50's prime target aint the streets as you are being led to think (or that he is led to think too). white girls from middle america are creaming in their pants for this dude (watch trl if u don't belive me). and it's not a "concious" decision. not like i said "hey, we're gonna do some shit that only college kids feel".

y'all (my peers) can run but y'all can't hide:

pull out the race card (dps), jigga's peeps (talib), y'all sex/street alias under the radar sex rap white labels (mos), fur coats (riq), kill neo tag (jag), call it something else (angie stone), grab yer guitars (dangelo), cut the hair and the wrap (erykah), do psychedelic records (com), smack a bitch up (dilla)....ghead-- get down-- (anti backpack movement anyone?) that aint gonna fixed fucked up economics and cd sales with black folks. even skillz (whose previous touring experince in his 7 years in 0) is amazed at the color of the mouths who knows "the nod factor".

that my friend is a remark from ignorant artists (not in a mean way...just that i'd too be on the defensive if i suddenly found out that the only people listening to my revoulution are white people.....m and stic even were shocked at the faces)

dont be surprised at statements like these (i have article and didn't see the roots mentioned....but we might as well be there too) and actions coming from "us" some of us know not "what they do".

This is what I'm saying.

Black people buy bootlegs and dont go to shows.

I talked to a catt at the Barber Shop who went to a Roots show..his girl dragged him there...this catt is a 50 cent/ Jay Z trend follower type....but The Roots blew him away with thier show. He admitted that the Show was one of the best he's seen but that he has never purchased any Roots albums and is not hip at all. So when the local bootlegger came in the shop...he asked for "Phren"...guess what...dude had a boot of it...so there you go:

Either a catt has to get dragged by wifey to come out to a show or he's gonna cop a Boot of the CD. So if you wanna sell albums, why target that type of catt (street catt....50 cent / Jay Z trend follower)?....but I still say that there a huge need for a Mixtape DJ to "popularize" some "left-to-center" artist so catts can start getting some street credo.

I get more positive and participative response from white folks than black folks. The green crink$ supporting live Black music come most often (at least in SO CALIF) from hip white folks. It may differ in areas where the population is more Chocholate City type environs, but the niggas I try to get to hang is all out waitin' to cop Kenny G tix.

I'm working on that project right now. The biggest struggle is amount of material and making it sound new since the cats that will be buying this have probably already worn out the songs in the original way. I mean, I know I killed "Get Up" for a minute. Used to drive up next to middle aged white people and blare it to see their faces. Sidetracked. I personally feel the market is there. Edpecially since you don't hear that many exclusives on mixtapes anymore anyway. It seems like all the cats have the same songs, they just reorder them on the CD.

Peace. Lets Build.

the point made by ?uest has still not sunk into the heads of any hip-hop artists. The problem is that none of these cats study their history. Hardly any artists today are students of their craft. I have a feeling that ?uest makes this remark because what he goes through is nothing to far from what Miles, Herbie, or Coltrane went through in their day.

imagine coming to the realization that you are being ignored by your own people. (well--one can be made aware, but the vote is done when you purchase product). i think that is something that disturbs someone's psyche.

i see riq going through that now. some jawns was quoting freeway in la, and i saw that look of dissapointment in his eyes like "i been rhyming my ass of for a decade and jawns dont quote me".

but riq still don't get that jawns are celebrating the lifestyle that beans, and free, and 50 and em represent. so he can get these notions that he better write some street shit to cure that jonze in his bones. but the results will fall on the same ears. freeway is being celebrated for what you think he is. a whiney loudass drug dealer. i know jawns that will die for m and stic. but it's mainly because of the stance they got. yell some "fuck the police" talk about the goverment. the rebel rousing of it is sexually stimulating to most (i do nothing but consumer report like focus groups--so don't get fooled into thinking that some of the headwraps you see at a dead show are anymore into the revoulution that a britney spears fan would be).

so the only thing to do is some immediate reactionary shit.

Kind of off topic but...

>shit to cure that jonze in his bones. but the results will

This sounds like the makings of a track Thought really needs to record. I'd love to hear him address these issues in rhyme...

Funny too, cuz I always had the impression that Thought, if he wanted to, could out-gangsta or out-bling -- in rhyme, if not in lifestyle -- lots of these POPular rappers. Earlier today, I got chills down my spine imagining the possibilities as I was listening to an MP3 of a Roots rendition of "Gangsta, Gangsta", hearing Thought spit on some NWA type shit. The style seemed to suit him!

I dunno, he just deserves more recognition than he gets.

So ends my BT appreciation post.

I understand the dissapoint black people feel upon the realization that it's mostly white people that are supporting their music. But music is music, right? I think that's the most important question to ask ourselves. If you close your eyes and listen to music, you can't tell if the people performing are black or white unless you've been conditioned to know what "black" or "white" music is--which of course, we all have been. Let's put it in most logical terms: Should I not enjoy the Roots' music simply because I'm white? Should the Roots stop playing music simply because whites are predominantly listening to it? The answer is (I think): Of course not.

And as for "delivering the message," wouldn't the future be brighter if the "black message" is reaching the white audience, which is presumably the group the blacks are oppressed by or feel resentment for? It only makes sense that reaching the black audience with the "black message" is preaching to the choir, as the cliche goes. Just a random thought that perhaps blacks and whites desperately need to understand each other before the racial situation can improve.

The Roots-LOL, they dont wanna be conscious, don't you guys get it? Yeah, and their new album is suspect and very incomplete.

This is interesting. They're basing their beliefs on what they see at concerts. I'm sure half of those white kids aren't really even 'fans' of them; they just go to be considered 'down' or 'cool'. It sounds like DP is a little jealous of the multi-mixed fanbase 'conscious artists' seem to have.

Nonetheless good music, is good music. If an artist decides to shy away from a positive sound because of what fanbase they 'assume' they're going to attract, then it just goes to show how shallow they are.

wow shy you're beautiful!!

Deadprez are my favorite group in a long time and The Roots are a long time favorite. Its hard to slam either of them based on a moral decision that they decide to make. In the end, the art they create is theirs to distribute in whatever way they wish, they created and it is therefore a part of them. It is not for any of us to say how they should share themselves. Emotionally speaking I would love to see deadprez get together with artists like Talib, The Roots, Me'Shell, etc, but I won't stop listening to any of them if they decide not to work together. I hope, however that The Roots, Mos Def and Talib start recognizing groups like The Coup and start doing some projects with progressive cats like that.

i agree with the beliefs of dead prez, and their music truly opened my eyes to a lot of things and definitely changed me. but come on. you can hate white supremacy, but when you start to PURPOSELY shut your fans out because of their color, it's like... whats the point?

their message should be to try to get EVERYONE to understand their message. they should be overjoyed to have fans from all audiences knowing that theyre reaching out to all kinds of people. they shouldnt try to shut out one audience, but try to incorporate everyone.

I was introduced to dead prez through the song hip hop, but when I listened to other songs, the "kill whitey" message was apparent, and I stopped listening to Dead Prez altogether. Those cats are as racist as they come. I still laugh at white people that bump Dead Prez. It just goes to show that people these days dont listen to lyrics.

Geez, I have never heard deadprez ever say "kill whitey", sorry bro but that is your own insecurities speaking. Most of the shit I've heard actually has a deep political analysis about how black folks are forced to live in the United Snakes.

I know I sounded igornant and i should have rephrased my words.

I too have never hear "kill whitey" in any of the Dead Prez music. I agree with them on almost everything as far as thier viewpoints. My problem is "They School". I understand and agree with most of the points made but some times you have to work in the system to change the system. Other than that I agree with them. It is like you can nod your head cause you agree not just because of the beat. I like music like that.
So many problems in our society can be traced back to "Race". There was a time when Republicans were the progressive party. I can't remember which candidate and year but the guy ran on a prosegragation ticket. And No, it wasn't Strom. Most Conservative policy boils down to race.
I have heard nothing in the Dead Prez music that refers to me. I have heard some of my feelings put together in rhyme.

White people I am cool with but I just don't like "Whitey".

Ok so i'm in london so its all a bit detached, but i am a big DP fan and have seen most their shows here and sometimes the only white person there is a girl friend i may have taken, but at other times i've been the only remotely non white person at their shows...but anyway,as much as i love thier music, message and subscribe to the same influnces as them(Panthers, mal X) its hard coz they do appear to sometimes say things which people,(my friends) could find offensive, plus i'm mixed race, so as a long term fan and supporter, i've wondered how they would view me??i've met them they are nice guys, but some of the things they said, did leaving feeling a bit...mmm...uneasy.

they are lucky, there are sooo many talented cats out there whos voice won't ever be heard, so i feel that dp need to see that and not try and alianate the fans they have, what ever colour they are. also, where exactley are they going to take their sound? they where true (i asume) to themselves on the first record and it word really well, is it really worth compramiseing themsleves as artists?

the logo is meaningful to me, because it depicts a black woman ready for war against the enemies of black people: the caucasians of europe, west asia and south asia.

i do not subscribe to any socialist/communist theory. that way of life is best suited for small, scale hunter-gatherer societies, not large, organized empires capable of defending themselves and imposing their will on others.

The logo however represents a red socialist star as a symbol of freedom and resistance for the oppressed African woman in the picture. It is actually a logo by a socialist group, I can't remember which one. Further it is also the logo for the most recent Coup CD, a communist hip hop group from oakland. Socialismo o muerte!

I can’t believe there's still this discussion goin on with white cats whining about THEM bein discriminated. I’m ‘as white as they come’and it blows my mind every time this topic comes up and whites try to tell people of other ethnic backgrounds how & what to express on racial issues. Where do you find the nerves to do that ? Historically, that’s absurd.

You’re adding to the history of oppression

Feeling uncomfortable ? Consider maybe that means DP are doin an accurate job displayin their racial and economic realities, which are pretty fuckin uncomfortable..

And that ‘excluding whites is not being constructive’-sh1t doesn’t fly either. These are real emotions and ideas caused by real situations being expressed. If anything, be glad you get access to that kind of information at all. Take notes. Learn.

add to the history of oppression? that those people want to be treated the same?

im not saying that white people have it worse than black people in terms of oppression, but i think its kinda strange to get so defensive over something like that. just because someone wants to be treated without being messed with because of their race doesnt make them oppressive or against other races.... i don't really see any logic there.

I believe DP voices some of the frustration and anger caused by a couple hundred years of oppression.

Choosing to ignore or censure expressions like that means you’re not interrested in the nature of problems we’re dealing with today. How can you attempt to help repair something you’re not even willing to try and understand what's goin on in the first place ?

i don't believe all white people who dislike being called cracker are ignoring racism. i think some are just stupid, and some maybe are sensitive and don't want racism against blacks, but also don't want the anger taken out on them. it's not so cut and dry and you can't make that assumption about them all.

the way to make progress is not to "express a whole lot of anger about 400 years of oppression". its to do something. yelling and screaming "cracker" won't do shit. (that's not what dead prez is doing, but you're making it seem as if thats a worthwhile approach)

exactly, it's not like white folks are losing jobs to black "racism". Think about problems systematically, not individually.

i think that white people who complain about racism are often really corny and whiney to be doing so. you're misunderstanding my point.

im referring to you saying that white people who don't like being called cracker are continuing the cycle of oppression. because you did say that and i don't really think that's true.

It's just an image you sound silly. Even if it was what an image to uphold Black unification globally. It's not the same as promoting genocide through music like the Ja rule's and Jay z's and Bennie's of the world not even close. RBG's for life!

First thing first, this is my first post so let me say Hello What up, What the deal, or what have you to everyone, and say that Im a white New Yorker who is a fan of Dead Prez. I like DP becuase there one of the few musicians who are making statments within in their music,if this was the 60s when everything seemed to embrace a political message I doubt I would be listening, and what they do is great - I just wont be growing dreads anytime soon.
Yes it is weird to see a bunch of white kids dancing around to "Im an Africa", which has a solid beat that is great for stepping to, but the reason for DP's troubles is that the average kid living in the inner city really dosen't want to pay $35 to see them or buy their album. Altough at the same time DP should be replacing every 50 cent album in the hood. Here's my point though if DP really wants to reach out to a bigger more black audience they should be doing more community outreach type shows - Central Park Summer Satge may be a good place to start. Also I'd like to add that I will never pay more then $18 to see a show anyway and thats why Atompshere and Aesop Rock have been so sucessful - their shows usually cost anywhere from nothing to like $10 bucks, so maybe if DP really wanted a wider following they should lower there ticket prices, or even better take advantage of the messed up situation in Iraq and boost some free publicity.

I was also at the Central Park summer stage show, and DP rocked the house right before the rain came. I love the message that they put out there, cause that is what rap music needs, militancy counterbalanced by bling blong. Whatever they say off wax, is their business, but what they put on wax is what is going to be remembered.

music is music..if you like em and wanna bump that shit..then bump that shit...if their whole message is about political and personal freedom, regardless of the race issue, then get the message and not give a fuck what they say and bump that shit..ain't that part of being free?

it seems like the white cats responding to this post are like shocked that ::oh snap:: a group of black artists wants to make music for black people..that's all good...i can respect that, but heads need to realize, once that shit is in public domain, you got no control of who's gonna grasp onto it...it don't make it right, or the smartest decision but it's theirs and it don't offend me ....

i mean..fuck it...i'm part white..but shit ..it don't bother me if heads wanna talk about white people or whatever, because I don't take that shit personally..and if you wanna base your judgement on me based on my skin color then I don't really have time to be hearin you...

personally, i think dead prez is iight...not groundbreaking to me, righteous mission or not....i understand where they're coming from and all but i tend to like music that's a little more diverse...brand nubian had tracks that were on some similar shit...but at least every one of their tracks wasn't about "riding around town..runnin down crackas"...

although the instrumental for "hip hop" is knockin..mad fun to scratch over..

ps..what about common dissin "coffee shop chicks and white dudes"..on Act Too?..

I remember my homeboy telling me when he saw them in Jan. that they were gonna chill out with calling people, "crackers" becuz they understand that not all white people are bad. instead of pouting like some sluts, they need 2 wake the fuck up. i think the DPZ should want anyone in their audience that is willing to fight for injustice. isn't that what activism is? getting all people together to fight a common cause. it shouldn't matter their ethnicity.

for them to say that about mos, kweli and the roots is ridiculous. all of their material is filled with issues relevant to blacks. but is it their fault that they are so talented that their music appeals to all types of different people?

maybe that's just me

The goal is the liberation of black people. Not getting anglo saxons to understand what their doing is wrong, they already now we (Black people) are oppressed their the ones doing it. Black people don't need whites to get the big picture about oppression in order to liberate themselves. The white men in power already knows if Blacks were to liberate themselves the white power structure would be no more, and they simply can't have that and that's the bottom line.

So on that note brothers and sisters please stop trying to debate these white people, red necks, crackers, honkeys, devils or whatever you want to call them about this matter and build with your own. Remember we are the ones that are oppressed not them.

One question...
Do you guys believe that in this day and age where globalization is taking over, where the industry is controled by a white hand and the media spoonfeeds whatever they want and we take it (specially in America), thatis still possible to maintain the same 60's spirit and commitment? Shit, even in my country old traditions are being broken easily, and in places where people didn't have tv's 2 years ago!

Yes it's possible. It must start from within the grassroots organizations first and then grow outward. And just because people were in the streets in the 60's doesn't say they were all down for the cause. Look what happend when our black leaders were assasinated in the 60's, who stepped up to keep the ball rolling nobody. People like my uncles and aunts were out there in the 60's but it was because it was the thing to do a fad. We need to raise true warriors that will not lose the pashion for this on going struggle when some of us get jailed or killed. That needs to be fuel for the fire when one of our freedom fighters get's taken out another fills those shoes. Not to pack up and say we can't beat the system and then go work for the very white man that pimps us. Black people must deal with reality more of us are going to die and be jailed for revolution learn to deal with it and know those who do fall did not die for nothing.

Black people stop being scared embrace revolution it's for our future babies.

And stop looking to the sky for someone to save you he aint coming we (Black People) have to save our selves it's time to step the fuck and be willing to go out if it means death then so be it.

Laws belong to those who write them, and to those who use them to control the resources of a society. It does not matter if a law is written in neutral terms. What really matters is wether that law is enforced non-discriminately. Laws are just words written on books.- Amos N. Wilson
