He is not talking about album sales, buildingblock I am suprised you did not go with schwin's assesment the musician that you are. It would not suprise me though that if you were just trying to be devils advocate. Numbers like the roots=A song is a number, that is what bands mainly back in the day called them. "Let's play that number again" for example. It is clear to me that when he said "trying to disconnect" that he was trying to do some different shit but "they keep pulling him back in" nobody wants to hear anything different. If you look to his Showtime concert where he said he was trying to do different stuff and be more inovative (sp?) "like the Roots". He gave them props during that concert as well. I think this is easy to understand and this subject should be dead.

I agree with Dude...he made some valid point. I thinkthe can do numbers like the Roots was a play on words; It had a Double meaning, Meaning: 1)He cant sell records and live his life the way he does and do to his rep ( besides..we all know folks dont support Rootsy music) 2) he cant make Music (i.e Do "numbers") like the roots Jay Live shit didnt make a BIG splash.

dude ment no harm..jus commin off the Top he stated what was on his mind. he pays homage to the rooots. They played for him. Get off his dick. let it ride. he said no disrespect. it was a good point sayin he was tryin to Disconnect. I mean doing the live Roots jawn was a big step even the rock shit was lenny..like reasonable doubt, you all lamed out

It's called clarifying your point so the slow and ignorant will understand. It could also be called defusing a situation before it gets out of hand because people are bored and will make much ado about nothing.

The term "number" could just be refering to a song. I know musicians who refer to a song as a number sometimes. So imagine "Can't do *songs* like the Roots"

Sounds like he's saying that he does think like an artist who loves his artform, yet if he really showed us that, he would only sell like the Roots do, which won't get The Roots dropped but will make fans very anti-Jay.

Imagine Jay-Z dropping the Black Album at the end of this year. It's full of good experimentation, he's focused more on his flow (vocals NOT cash), he keeps the guests to a minimum, and the beats are top notch. Cats who only buy Jigga to hear him floss would put him down and say he's biting Talib's style! Since he came in like a baller, that's what is expected. Now his fans' expectations are high--and only going platinum is 99 and a half...

He's been telling people for years that he dumbed his flow down after Reasonable Doubt because he didn't sell. Now he's so big that he can't go back to doing that. But he still gives flashes of that brilliance from RD...just not whole albums of it.

I know you're all fans, but put any other group's name in that line, and tell me that's not disrespectful. you think anybody wants to be referred to as the example of low sales in rap. come on, Jay did 'em bogus. Even if it was a quick rap, he should have rewritten it.

"40 OZ. MAGIK", THE BEST RAP ALBUM EVER.... COMING SOON

Basically, even if Jay's intentions are good... 95% percent of the people who'll hear this will see it as a negative reflection on the Roots. Its only positive if you really analyze what he's sayin which most cats wont do. Its a jaded shoutout.

Now, you fucks may speak...

Which is really is dilemma from the start. That muthafuckers don't really listen to him and understand the shit he say. They take the single and "single him out to what his about". They just listen to the chrous. He knows that he has to keep up his sales now cause he used to and stakes are high everytime he comes out so he has to give the people what they want. Hopefully the Black Album will be his not giving a shit and doing art for art's sake.

he can't change his appeal.he has fans that did him they inspire him to excell as that "type" of rapper.he wasnt successfull before and if he changes he won't be around later ..he won't sell being the "intelligent" rapper,or break new grounds a.k.a the roots .at the sametime he's smart enough to know he has to evolve.it's a catch 22.he knows sales dont mean sh*t ask candyman and vanilla ice.also people have short memories so he says "oh i know ill challenge mobb and nas-atleast become a trivia question answer and atleast create debate about my legitamacy in the hirearchy that way ill go down in history guaranteed.ill atleast have a relationship with the best artists (roots) and see where i stand and where to go from there".
hes realized his $ and his fans limit his creativity. because he lack the true ability to go to different levels like all the best do.if he had smart fans wouldnt he have original album titles?and not just change the volume numbers so he doesnt confuse them? for more see Nas "God Son" and mobb deep "infamy" i sound like a hater but i cant convince myself im wrong.

46. "best of both worlds = things fall apart sales?"
In response to Reply # 0

or did even BOBW outsell things fall apart?

heck, if you consider that RIAA counts double CDs as two distinct units per sale when certifying, "blueprint 2" has only moved 1.5 million. that's not exactly astronomically higher than the 700,000 or so that The Roots pushed for TFA. And considering how much radio play Jay gets compared to what The Roots get, the gulf between them sales-wise is much closer than an outside observer would expect.

but blueprint 2 is kicking the hell out phrenology in sales. shrug.

a lot of rap albums come out. a lot of rappers and not many even get to gold (which you will reach). AND not many rap acts from 94 dropped new albums in 2002 that got any attention at all (basically you guys and Nas, right? from that year anyway). hell, be proud. i'd be dancing in the street if i were you.*

i'd still like to hear thought and jay z over a vintage big daddy kane tempo track trading lines. hell, with kane on it too.

but i'm just a dreamer...

* and Com, to drop a debut album in 1992 and have a hit single ten years later? how rare is that? i think he may even be ALONE in that category. i would add busta, but LONS was a group. com did it solo the whole time.

side note: jay put out a double album featuring dre, lenny kravitz, pharrell, sean paul, etc...i mean, it was a collection of hit singles in the making...expecting your album to compete with that on a sales basis is ridiculous...but if you guys could get some high-powered features next time...and i don't mean nelly (bless her soul), I'm thinking the Blond Guy or Jigga himself.

Peace,

Spirit (Alan)
