I thought you would've understood from the tone of my reply that 'ignorant' was tongue in cheek and not serious, it was a reference to your journal entry where you used the term yourself ... I'll admit that "Dear Tina" would've been a less provocative title ...
And I only saw PAP's post here after posting my reply ... I can understand your reaction a little better now ... for the record I don't agree with him ... there's no reason why you shouldn't be writing the journal or changing the way you do it. As long as people can react here and have a dialogue it's all good.
>MIDEM >definitely isn't the place for a conference....however, if >those are the people who are distributing music, and music >is culture, and I see my culture being spread in a way that >is inaccurate, then yes, I want the medium that is most >commercial, to spread some truth.
We all want that, but how realistic is it to expect it, when 99% of the people at MIDEM (and any similar initiative) are there to SELL or BUY something ? It ain't about distributing music, it's about the publisher's/record company's money. Just like you said, that's why you see a Korean copy of NWA there. Cos there's plenty of talent BUT there's no understanding or competent people on the business side. NO publishers who understand hiphop, NO A&R's, NO label executives ... except for a few smaller labels. And they probably won't even go to MIDEM, considering the cost and the fact that the majority of people there won't have the same priorities as them.
Not blaming you, to the contrary, just telling it how I see it.
And I can only react to what you write, there was no way for me to know that you know IAM if you don't mention it and criticize European hiphop for not coming with the topics you mentioned (when that same IAM you seem to know is one of the artists that does).
>I think I'm in a position >to make larger leaps. Apart of what we're doing are >workshops that would encourage people to come to our own >conferences - i.e. Okayplayer & Lyricist Lounge Present, the >1st annual Hip Hop festival in Amsterdam. Some dope shit >like that. Dialogue.
Well, great idea, and it would indeed be nice if people in your position, with your connections and experience, (co)organize things like this. Dialogue, like this thread.
>It doesn't work, however, if there is only one concept of >what "hip hop" is. They should send some lyrics with that >shit like how they dubbed Charlies Angels and spread the >word to the masses.
Part of the magic of lyrics and poetry is lost in a translation (it doesn't even always works for novels, poetry is even more delicate IMO), and how many people would actually care about a sheet with English lyrics if the songs are in French ? Not trying to be bitter or negative about it, just realistic.
We all know about the dominance of American culture (reason why the whole world is copying/emulating or inspired by it), a minuscule number of people in the US would actually go through the trouble of reading a translated text sheet ... if at least the album would be available in the US in the first place. And IAM ain't even available in The Netherlands, cos the record company reasons that the Dutchies ain't interested in French spoken hiphop ... that's how fucked up things are. And that's what upsets me (not your journal). Of course there's nothing wrong with the music listeners, why else would I have gone to a Youssou N'Dour concert (and thousands of others in Europe on his current tour), where I can't understand a thing he's saying, and still enjoy it ?
But that same Youssou N'Dour (at least as important as Bob Marley, but he'll never get his props since he doesn't sing all his songs in English ... sigh) hasn't released an international album since "7 Seconds" ... why is that ? I don't think it's his decision, it's all label-based. If even a man with his power and rep gets this treatment, how good are things looking ? Maybe I'm a little too negative, but this is reality too.
>gtg >the 10 hour thing kept the story flowing....Ahmir, are there >any OKP's with a sense of humor? Sheesh, remember the good >old days when people just went to school and wrote papers >there? This ain't even fun.
The 2 hour thing was tongue in cheek too. You're asking about okp's sense of humor, but you're taking things too serious yourself. Thanks for responding and clarifying a few things though.
