That would be amazing. That song's been crying for a hip hop group to cover it!

Actually, I've always thought "Sweet Leaf" by Black Sabbath was a hip hop song in disguise.

what you need to do right now is go out and buy a copy of BB KIng- Live at the Regal....its great.

he has a horn section with him, and of course his guitar playing is incredible.

Everyday's on there....he does a great version of it...

I don't give a fuck that they're a new band, or that the song isn't some classic from 1973. This is the song I would like to hear The Roots cover.

I read in Spin that ?uestlove digs Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti. So how about Ten Years Gone. I know they could Funk it up a bit.
Or maybe the Crunge.
Hmm. I'm trailing off.

Without a doubt The Ocean or Ramble On (Zeppelin). They could also do a sick Pawn Shop (Sublime) or Under the Bridge, then bring Mos Def out and go right into Brooklyn.

I wasn't even gonna reply to this thread, cause i'm desperately wishing the Roots would release a true follow up to Illadelph, but then I thought about it, and I always thought Black Sabbath circa Paranoid had some dirty ass funk shit on that album. If I had to to choose, I'd go for War Pigs... it's like Sabbath listened to soem old school 70's funk when they wrote that album... it's almost wierd, but I like it.

Don Brewer was (is) one of the meanest drummers around, and that whole album is tight. It would be funny to see Black Thought sing this, with Scratch and Rahzel reaching the high harmonies.

-the issue is making it fit. if you think about it, most of these songs are almost impossible to cover because it's tough to make them fit, speking of the song and the actual lyrics. water is just one of the easier ones to work with. i'm thinking that it would be easier for them to lead into the joker from a solo. like hub's? that would be hot. have him lead into the baseline & rock like a verse & the chorus a couple times? but, with their phren setlist, it's hard to go from that into sacrifice (which is what usually comes after hub's solo). regardless of which, the joker was the best suggestion, if i do say so myself, and i'm sure questo & the gang could make it happen. let's keep our fingers crossed. cause GODDAMN that would be great....

Oh yeah...in addition to Billy Squier, I think some glam rock would be dope---Queen. I think "The Braids(??) flipped it when they rocked "Bohemian Rhapsody", and I think the Roots could do it seventy times better, with Jill Scott singing the falsetto...
Plus, Queen just had some hot stuff "Crazy Little Thing Called Love", "We Will Rock You", etc. So eccentric.

-bohemian rhapsody? that sounds a bit gay. (no pun intended) jill scott brings a certain vibe to roots guest spots, and i feel like this would ruin everything good about it. besides, where would it fit?! as a lead-in to you got me? they would have to like feature this cover, and it would single handedly make the show suck....

Bohemian Rhapsody is one of the most amazing accomplishments of American pop music. The idea of having an orchestra to accompany a rock band, not to mention telling a story of a murder trial and the feelings accompanying in a pop aestethtic?? WHAT?? Gay...that's just genius. Yes, Freddy Mercury was gay, but Bill Withers was a wife-beater and DAMM, I loved his music...

I don't think anybody's getting offended. I think people might be taking a bit of exception with your unnecessarily limited view of rock music...to dismiss a song because it sounds "gay" is silly--I think every Prince song would probably be summarily dismissed as a worthy song then...and since the topic is "Rock Songs the Roots Should Cover", to dismiss one of the baddest rock cats ever on the basis of his faux-homosexuality would be an act of the worst idiocy...

Feel me, brethren?

-ok, maybe opening w/ national anthem (this could calm the ones who say hendrix too), but you're talking about lyrics too? this is why i say no radiohead. the band can probably hit almost anything, but when you say cover, doesn't that mean vocals included?....
