"Its kind of ridiculous there have been no posts about The Roots Jams"
Sun Apr-26-09 03:45 PM by HighVoltage

Considering these have been some of the best shows i've seen them do in their career (yeah, i said it).

Up until this, we really havent seen The Roots do something like this before (granted Wetlands was before my time, but im not sure they really "jammed" in the sense they are doing it now). For those who haven't been, these are not even like the Grammy or Holiday jams either (which are also awesome).

Never know what to expect each week, but its guaranteed to be something new. I mean, they have done 7 so far and not once have they done the same jams.

Anyway, aside from selling out each week, I'm not sure they realize how grateful we are (its easy to be spoiled in NYC with all the dope shows we have every month). So i'll just take this opportunity to thank them for rockin out each week until late in the morning with "work" the next day.

Definitely the highlight of my week, every week, and i'm thrilled to see 4 more were added in July. Keep em comin!

she tried the old "okayplayer" shctick and was somewhat surprised at the response.

there was none.

bill and i laughed at each other.

i guess the "logical" thought is that the first draft of 19-24 year olds we attracted in 99 are now 29-34 years old and if the rep of our fan base is indeed the upper echelon college edumuhcated type then that class of 99 draft are now smart responsible adults who have these things called "jobs" to tend to in the morning.

at least i hope this is the answer instead of what always lurks in my head which is "yall have been abandoned".

clearly there is an audience out there. all the jams are sold out til july.

im just wondering who is our fanbase today.

for the non hip hop based groups we are always paired with i notice their fan base stick to their groups. DMB/phish/phil and friends/et al never "re-up" on their fanbase like we do factory style. they just add on and add on......

for some strange reason we can't "add on"---they chill like its a 4 year rest stop on the turnpike and then create some excuse for why they aren't interested anymore (and yet the new discoveries speak of us like "we could kick ourselves for not being down with yall earlier....and then they do the same.)

as long as we add on im not that worried.

i would like to figure out what is what though....

i mean i got more followers on my twitter page than the website of my so called home.---its borderline more productive for me to announce shit there than here.

i mean--the roots keep the lights on over here....but i hardly see this place as a support system for the roots.

i dont know if that is "life as we know it".....or "sad"

--but yeah back to your comment....we finally living up to our reputation hype and making up shows on the spot.

all them trees in the forrest falling.....sigh.

Correct.

Wait, so you wondering if you've been abandoned when all the shows are sold out FOR THE NEXT TWO MONTHS? And I've been wondering why I can't get tickets...

>for the non hip hop based groups we are always paired with i
>notice their fan base stick to their groups. DMB/phish/phil
>and friends/et al never "re-up" on their fanbase like we do
>factory style. they just add on and add on......

Points to bear in mind:
*DMB, Phish, and Phil ain't pooling fans from three different ponds. It's one big pond they're pooling from. All three's fanbase = the same fanbase. Do you really know anybody who likes 1 but not all 3?
*Their music is openly more accesible. A lot of their fans are people who are or were scared to go down the rap aisle in FYE. That's why they've got more fans, they're attracting new listeners who won't listen to hip hop.
*You make a point of changing direction every album. You even say so in the interviews. Hip hop ain't the form of music where you can expect fans to understand that. Are hip hop fans stupid? No. But name another hip hop group that changes direction every album? Name another hip hop group that puts out enough albums to even CONSIDER the notion of changing directions? Hip hop fans suffer from only being able to eat what they're fed. And they damn sure ain't fed enough artists capable of changing direction every album.
*As for hip hop fans...Hip hop fans are bred a little differently. Inclusive, opinionated, at best honest/at worst disrespectful. It's one of the lesser traits of hip hop I can't say that I'm proud of. But then again, when most rappers can't make 3 decent albums, can you blame us? I'm afraid The Roots are A+ students in a room full of D students. It's going to be a loooooong semester.

"THEY" as in The Roots fans who you have to re-up? See my comments above.
"THEY" as in new Roots fans? I've been here since Kolby Kolb played THE SILENT TREATMENT BT REMIX on the Power 99 show RADIOACTIVE, so I can't speak on new heads any more than above.
"THEY" as in hip hop fans in general? I sincerely believe they're fully formed humans force-fed baby food.
"THEY" as in the white college crowd? I feel as though the white college crowd do their "slumming it" years when they're in college. Music, movies, experiences, thought/intelligence, dating. The ones who "create some excuse for why they aren't interested anymore" in their mid 20s become boring people by their 30s. The fact you're the only hip hop group still doing it that they've been turned on to is the reason you're noticing that. If Outkast was still together, they'd notice the same thing. And those "create some excuse..." heads aren't DMB/Phish/Phil fans STILL, they just keep playing the same records over and over again. They'll be those people who listen to the same old shit, only "supporting" as a form of nostalgia.

>(and yet the new
>discoveries speak of us like "we could kick ourselves for not
>being down with yall earlier....and then they do the same.)

A lot of those new discoveries are, in fact, that white college crowd, so in essence you're referencing the same group twice thinking they're two different groups.

>as long as we add on im not that worried.

You're on a major network five nights a week.
You're one of the only hip hop groups to consistently put out above-the-grade material since 199WHAT?
Hip hop is (slowly) losing its negative stigma, bringing with it new listeners.
Hip hop fans, in a strange majority, seem genuinely tired of wack shit.
You make fresh music without the big labels in an era when the big labels matter less and less.
"Those who doubt will soon believe." (c) some midwest rapper you helped make a superstar.

>i mean i got more followers on my twitter page than the
>website of my so called home.---its borderline more productive
>for me to announce shit there than here.

To be fair, this is true of just about everybody on the internet with a home. The fucking head of facebook uses Twitter.

>i mean--the roots keep the lights on over here....but i hardly
>see this place as a support system for the roots.

So much good stuff that's come to pass because of OKP, don't be the disgruntled doorman. Don't turn into Kevin Costner at the end of Field Of Dreams, mad because somebody else gets to walk through the cornfield. Be happy you built the field, even if all you get to do is watch the game.

DMB has a different audience than the hardcore jam bands like Phish and all the Dead spinoffs.

Phish/Phil fans would be more likely to be into the Allmans or Government Mule than DMB.

DMB carries more of a pop audience (people who know them from Crash,e tc.) with an overlap on the jamband set. Many DMB fans barely know 'of' Phish and have never heard of Phil and Friends.

Your points about the white college crowd growing up to be boring is pretty right on. Part of it is due to people settling down, having babies, moving out of the city so seeing shows isn't part of their routine anymore. Part of it is just people becoming lame and attributing it to 'growing out of hip hop'.

How do you grow out of the Roots when they're growing/changing directions too?

i know tons of people who are into Phish, Phil Lesh, Allmans, Black Crowes, Umphreys, etc. and they all know DMB. They may not all be as big fans of them, but they are certainly very familiar with their music.

Right, I agree with that point but I'm saying the opposite.

My brother fits in the category you describe. Huge Mule, Crowes, etc. and he knows about DMB but doesn't care for them.

On the flipside, I also know plenty of DMB fans who don't know Phil Lesh from Phil Collins.

My point is that DMB gets a slice of the jam band audience but a larger slice of his crowd is made of people who are more likely to listen to Coldplay or something more pop-leaning.

I assume DMB has fans from their radio play, but every DMB fan I've ever run into tries to hip to every jam band, from Phish to String Cheese Incident. So if you're the guy who's running into the DMB radio fans, I have no option but to take your word on it.

Settling down and having babies is a poor excuse for becoming wack. But I suppose that since I've not done either, I can only assume.

Exactly. I hate talking in large generalities, but a lot of white people are only interesting during their college years. After that they're just boring people who do your taxes.

i wake up early for work the day after and it kicks my ass, but there is no way I would miss out on these, so I'll gladly make that sacrifice.

but i do have friends who want to go but cant make it because of the very late show times. also keep in mind the last train out of grand central is usually around 1:45 AM, so that forces those outside of the city to only drive in.

basically what im saying is, a midnight show on a work night is going to alienate a certain demo of fans.

but even with that, they still all sell out, and thats really what matters, though with a $10 price tag, I'd assume you guys arent doing this for the money.

i followed the roots religiously from about 2002-2006 havent seen them since last year's picnic though

as far as fans dropping off, i got to say that i was definitely very disappointed by the last two albums. no disrespect or hate intended cause i still bought them and will buy what comes out next in hopes that its better but i feel like both of the last albums were packed with similar tracks that didnt have sonic or lyrical hooks to keep me interested

i will never lose faith in the roots' ability to put on a live show or put out a great album but the last two seem like they must have been rushed or something. it wasnt that they were bad just not enough to get into my regular rotation or to compare to what the band had put out before

i really want to go to one of these jams but timing and money are definitely issues. im hoping my situation will permit me to hit up a midweek show like that by the next time they make tix available

some of what you said is true. but i think a lot of those fans you might have thought you lost are just too caught up at work to be posting on okp all the time. i think a lot of them are still listening, still coming to some shows. i actually see a decent amount of older ppl at these jam sessions. so i don't think its all college kids anymore. i think the roots are also for people who have grown up and wanna listen to something a little more substantial now.

its probably also because okp isn't the only show in town anymore. twitter, myspace, facebook and all the other places to post stuff. i've never been a big poster but i still lurk all the time. but with all the sold out shows, some of these ppl have to be okp's.

granted OKA isn't as active as the Lesson, but you say there are no posts there either.

i'll definitely be going to a couple of these this summer, i just need to bust my cherry.

as for why i haven't gone already, i live in CT and these shows are late as fuck during the week.

unless i leave the show early, i ain't making the last train home. i'll be there soon though, looking forward to it.

I've considered taking the next day off work and driving up from philly to see a show. If there was every a friday or weekend one i'd be there in a heart beat. But a mon-tues-wed is just brutal.

But to tack on to HV's point, i've been pretty disappointed in the updates, the bits i've read about these jam sessions have sounded incredible. I've been dying to hear more. I'd LOVE to see some sorta weekly summary.

And to respond to ?uesto... i think you've sorta summed it up well. I've never been incredibly active in the boards. I've always been more a reader and lurker but i was all about the forums and reading it like 4-5 times a day for years. But it seems like every year my day/job just gets busier and busier and its harder and harder to squeeze out the time. Now basicly it seems like the only time i can hop on here is my lunch break.

But I don't think that means we don't care or check in. Its just means its harder to do.

ya "tangible" would be awesome. I was originally hoping there'd be a weekly blog or something from Ginny or someone about the shows on the front page. But since thats not happening, if you and some others could maybe give all us non-nyc people a once a week run down i know i'd be gratefull.

I think for my birthday i'm gonna try and take a day off and go see one of these shows.

Guest wise, is it all just completely random? Do they ever get one of the guests from the Fallon show to come out to do the Jam? Not that it matters, i wouldn't care if there wasn't any guest. I was just curious what its been like so far.

It's the most amazing thing I have been apart of since I have been shooting!

It's a honor to be THE photog for these said JAMS!

Some days I stand on stage and doze and push back the 1st 5 rows.
( yes I know how the line REALLY goes)
But that's how I feel.
Last week when boot camp was on stage I had to kneel down behind and just close my eyes and say WOW....this shit is DOPE AS FUCK!

I use to ask Ginny on let's say the day before as to who THEY have for this week. But now I want to be surprised as to who is going to show up.

I could go on and on about my experiences I have had with the 6 Jams or is it 7 that I have been so and taken photos at.( missed the 1st one cause I was in Japan...go figure)

So yeah, shits are dope as fuck and I am very thankful to be down.

Thx: Roots crew and that means everyone!

that tonight was mediocre imo (in comparison to the previous jams).

with that said, i took a friend with me who hasnt seen the roots since 2003 and he thought it was great.

still, it took 10 shows for me to find one I wasnt blown away with, which is an impressive clip and a testament to the roots.

just sharing my 2 cents.

cant wait for next week.

It was definitely not the best of the jam sessions but opening up with the breakdancers and all those musicians on stage was awesome...also black thought killed that 'mona lisa' verse...wonder if that was a new song..if so, wooooo...part of his verse is here on youtube like one min in...

the jam with lady alma was great and some of the jams at the beginning were good (but too many wack rappers though... they looked silly up there trading verses with riq geez. truck and mars co-op were only nice ones out of that group)

Mona Lisa is actually an unreleased song that was produced by Karriem Riggins at least 3-4 years ago. I'm assuming it was gonna be on their collab album, D.Troidelphia (or whatever it was called) that never came out.

compared to last week....

i mean i think last week was the greatest week of the jam session.

but you have to discount the celeb factor too yo.

you had the illest guitar player in the last 15 years

going head to head with a maniac whom in the 70's Time magazine called "the heir to John Coltrane"

add in BCC and well?

*shrug*.

i only wish Marsh woulda hit the ball out the park like i KNEW she could.

that violin chick violated rule number ONE

you NEVER solo over another mofo.

as for the rappers? eh...its hit and miss. but if i dont give em a forum....who is? (zukon the freestyler was dope imo)

kirk was MIA.

but yeah compared to what you saw last week i could say that.

but i know cats who seen it for the first time and liked it so its relative.

all my A list pals are keeping an arms length to these sessions cause of the "on the spotness" to it.

even ol hov was like "word im down" only to be like pulling off before he walks in. lol

*shrug*

james was drunky smurf.

im comparing to it every week though (i havent missed one yet)... i mean i dont expect the A team to show up every week, I get that.

>that violin chick violated rule number ONE

I dont think she did- she didnt actually start playing until 3 min after she was introduced.

but isnt that exactly what David Murray did? Kirk was in the middle of an ill solo and he stole his thunder.

>as for the rappers? eh...its hit and miss. but if i dont give
>em a forum....who is? (zukon the freestyler was dope imo)

zukon made me laugh "mic check 1, 2... whos got the swine flu?"

>but i know cats who seen it for the first time and liked it so
>its relative.

the people i rolled with thought it was great, but i was tryin to tell him that they take it to whole 'nother level.

>all my A list pals are keeping an arms length to these

thats a bit surprising. its not like they are expected to be on the spot, it falls more on the band imo- BCC even did their notable verses while buckshot freestyled (which he loves to do and is very good at anyway).

at the end of the day, i cant really complain... the whole residency is more than i could have ever hoped for and the recession-proof price tag is the icing on the cake. cant wait to do it all again tomorrow night.

last night felt great because the musicians were kicking ass (and tony royster gave me a break!!!) so it wasn't about a major celebrity and more about the virtuoso of musicians there

(vernon reid, tal wilkenfeld, tony royster, taylor mcferrin, rahzel, the cats from snl, whole bunch)

last night was all about the music. all the musicians that blessed the stage killed it.

out of the 15 installments so far (damn, thats adding up fast!), that may have the been the best from a pure music perspective... that jam with tony royster- cot damn! i think that was the first time i can remember seeing the roots play and you getting a breather... yet even with the break, you were still playing MD barking out orders, lol.

cant leave out the incredible Soho jam at the end. Hot Music indeed.

i said it before and ill proudly say it again... guaranteed to be the best 2 hours of my week, every week.

Andre Nickatina had me dying...another good one last night...i'm saying though...jay and beyonce came rolling in with bodyguards to table upstairs...jay can't go on stage for 5 minutes and kick AH verse? Really?

yeah they came in like 10 min after the roots came on...sat at a table for like 30 min upstairs...and then either bounced or went to chill backstage..

i was thinking that it was kind of like kobe showing up at a pickup game to watch at the park...and not getting on the court (which would be understandable)..but its totally different. i don't want to speak for anyone, but i would imagine jay was asked to get on stage last night and he must have said no...weird..i mean, kick the first verse of D.O.A, tear the place down...and then do you man...

no one is expecting you to do reasonable doubt from start to finish or even crazy in love dog..

a great one.

Amanda Diva's opening set was dope, didnt expect her to have a band which was a nice surprise.

all the jams (instrumental) were top notch.

huge fan of Fresh Daily so to see him spit with the roots, then trade verses with BT made my night.

really nice to see The Cypher jammin with The Roots.

and Adam Holzman kills it on keys every single time hes at a jam.

another example of how you dont need A list talent to still put on a fantastic show. in fact, i kind of liked it more because it gave BT more time to shine, and when he's debuting new verses every week and rippin it, thats always a good thing.

I really do feel bad for those of you outside of New York City area because these Jam Sessions are sooo dope! Being that I am now in the realm of somewhere in the 30's amount of Roots shows (I am starting to lose count) I was a just a tad (I know the Roots don't disappoint) skeptical just because I had got so use to the set format of their shows, I wasn't sure what to expect. The solo's last night were amazing! Especially when Quest was standing up drumming while another drummer was getting down on the same drums at the same time. A real HOT version of Web was done too. This being my 3rd jam, I'm loving the random Black Thought verses over different beats. Its like a bunch of remixes. Can't wait to catch all this shows this summer!

High Voltage- u are always posting up video's at shows that I'm at. I probably seen you a dozen times already. Thanks for all the footage to relive these moments!! And Handle too!! (still waiting for a Roots Live DVD)

I'm loving NYC right now!

Got to love NY. A couple notes. Brown girl burlesque - I wasn't ready for that. Was that Brainchild on the turntables. Nice grooves to keep us nodding are heads until the madness began. Good vibe in the air. Must have been like what my grandparents witnessed.

That Lockheart chick was bad. Excellent voice. Crazy. Sexy as a mother. What happened to her blackberry. She was standing next to me. Shit was cracked. Hell if I cared. Okay I think I have a lil crush on her. Too much information. Lol. Still high off the music and contact high.

I'll be back like Schwarzenegger. Nice to be put on some new shit (to me anyway).

see you got two camps battling each other onstage

hip hop heads

vs

musicians.

and EVEN THEN you got more camps

the fusion era musicians (old cats who are weather report, herbie influenced)

and the next breed (all of glaspers cats and the revive da live cats)

so in my book: chris dave is GOD, but if craig g wants a raw gutter break beat, we have a problem.

tiombe lockheart NORMALLY rips shit. i now know that "off the top" aint her cup of tea.

and if a monitor cuts off, you may NEVER know what key a musician is in.

ill be honest i was gonna throw in the towel and be like "fucggit no magic tonight"

but man...i thought about paris jackson and i was like

"EFF THAT! this mofo aint die in vein, he never did a half ass job so why should i?!"

my rule is all is well that ends well.

as long as the last 20 mins is STRONG then people feel justified to come back AGAIN.

so i yelled "reach in and pull some magic out motherfuckers!" i can tell cats were leaving cause we were meandering a bit and NOW we gotta do something SO MAGICAL it will make those that DID stay be like "YO SON YOU SHOULDA NEVER LEFT!!!!!!!"

thank god that happened last night.

so the audience isn't as critical for stuff like that because we aren't expecting a well polished set. we expect loose vibes and some hiccups, so it seems natural to me.

only times it was noticable was Craig G and Tiombe, but Tiombe looked like she had no idea what to do so I think that fell on her.

the MJ tribute was awesome. heads should know by now to never leave a show before it ends, especially the roots.

and finally Chris Dave, Galsper, Hodge, Corey King, the cypher... all those RDL cats killed it as usual.

also to the comment above it's funny to me when people ask if a show was recorded. if I was there, you already know...

i was waiting outside before the show, and i saw the girls pull out a shiny glove, and at first thought, i'm like "big MJ tribute", and then i saw what the gloves were for...and i was like WOW...and i still got the tribute...

i gotta figure how to get back to NYC to another jam...there's always Rock the Bells on the 18th...

Thanks again!!

Can anybody out there suggest a good audio recording device? I'm tired of forgetting all this magic at these Jam sessions. I try to remember the melodies in my head and of course they vanish by the next show. There is so much of this stuff I would love to hear again. I tried using my phone (and its not a crappy one) but the sounds are way too powerful and the recordings sound like cats rumbling through the trash can. Any recommendations people?

i haven't been to a jam session since the one yall had with rhazel/bilal a few weeks ago...

so i took a shortie to the show...having already told her of all the jam sessions i been to..( i think this is 8 ), she is geeked and all excited to see yall perform...

when u guys are on, she is like a kid in a candy store...smiling from ear to ear...when the other acts come on...the smile turns into a frown ( except for the white preacher act )...

she wanted to cut the night short...and was looking at her watch every other minute...

lets just say i think i will be attending all future jam sessions either solo or with one of my boys...

on another note...

I KNEW you guys were going to do something for MJ before I even entered the building..and I told her so while we were online...

so when yall did human nature in the beginning, she says...ok, i dont think they're doing more...

I tell her...just sit back and watch...

so we get to the end of the show...the combination of her nagging and me hearing thought say...thank u all for coming out and supporting us led me to say ok....no sense fightin this battle...let me quit while im ahead...

then i wake up to hear what i knew was gonna happen all along...

lol
fuckers !!

ahhhhhh

Of course dope show!!

Quick Thoughts....

It seems How I Got Over got a great RESPONSE! I was surprise to see how many seem to know the song. The jams and solo's were dope, especially when Quest and a dude that looks like mini Quest were drumming at the same time on the same drum set. I like the little sprinkle of Roots songs while still keeping it an improvise jam. I gravitate as another user mentioned before of having more musician guests as oppose to rap guests (unless they are great caliber who can share the stage with Black Thought) as it worked well again tonight. My only minor little complaint- I think Quest got us all too eager with the Lady of My Life Michael Jackson tease- the place was about to go nuts!

Thanx fellas for more great music!!!

this was a great one... definitely one of the best musically so far- so many talented musicians came through. richie cannata, wallace roney, will calhoun, etc. damn.

it was funny because for a while I was saying to myself, damn, BT hasnt been back on stage in like an hour or so... and then he pops up and goes right into 75 bars, web and men @ work all back to back (thats breath control at its finest kids).

janelle monae was fantastic as well, shes got so much talent and energy. that rendition of sincerely, jane was top notch.

the crowd is definitely more wild at the jams than at "regular" roots shows, its great to see that kind of reaction every week. that place was goin nuts during how i got over.

Quest, you say you cant wait til December... but we dont want this to end (not that you guys dont deserve a vacation from this).

I been to quite a few Jams now, and they have all been great- but this one did seem exceptional! It was one of those shows I wished I could have brought somebody for the first time. Everybody on horns were great. Talk about breath control- it was insane when Quest keep intentionally drumming faster and faster towards the end of Men @ Work and Black Thought not missing a beat- Insane! Is December the end of the Jams, or just a break? I hope its just a break, although I don't know how these guys grind the way they do, but us fans appreciate it!! I start work again in September (its nice having a teachers schedule), so after next week, I don't think I can catch a show until the next holiday break.

holy fuck...

thats insane. With no break inbetween? If you had told me before hand that they'd attempt that, i woulda wagered it wasn't possible... men @ work is rediculous on its own.

I can't wait till the audio of that makes its release date.

@?uesto

Just outta curiosity (and you don't have to say what it is, just a yes/no is cool).

Have you guys stumbled upon anything in these jams that you liked so much you plan to include it in the normal shows?

ive seen PLENTY of jam shows and besides "a lil karaoke" and alot of soloing.

i cant name many contemporary groups that just straight up make some shit up.

i mean i love it.

but man to be honest.

i can't take the anxiety

the making sure this mofo dont drink too much to not perform (upstairs be a calvacade o dranks)

making sure that mofo dont take it personal when they rock a jam that is whack

making sure this mofo dont overplay

making that mofo projects in the mic

making sure this mofo dont overstay the welcome

making that mofo gets here ontime and NOT stand us up

making sure the cat who drove 4 hours got money worth

making sure that mofo who has been here 29 times before still enjoys it.....

im not an anal perfectionist but damnit.....i just feel like its too risky if we dont come up spades.

imma let it go til the end of the year.

january we will announce the mother of all shows.

and i personally would like to end it on an "up" note like that.

NO! LIST

its funny to see how time has changed things in terms of looking at your posts. back a little bit you are so amped up for the jams. now it looks like you're getting tired of them. i think these jams are even better than regular roots shows. its gonna be hard getting used to the same setlists again after getting to see this so often....

i almost wish the roots would take a break from it so its not a chore. then do like once a month or something just so it stays fresh and its not so much of a chore anymore. next year i'm saying.

sometimes i almost get the feel that the group doesn't have a full say in who comes on stage especially when its some strange group and you see their faces after the performace like wtf was that?

I'm sure as blood sucking fans we would want a Roots Jam every week until you guys retire, but we will surely enjoy it until December. Its actually kind of fun watching how things play out on stage as a real funky jam is born or reactions to a "wtf" moments. Look forward to the next one on Monday and the mother of all jams to come in January!

In my defense a) i was drunk b)i was never a fan of the band and only know the name vernon reid from guitar mags c)someone called out Vernon to him, so even though I originaly thought Vernon was the guitarist, my drunkness convinced me that I was wrong.

Could have used more of the Roots, but still well worth the trip from DC

I live in the south and know many people who are Roots fans but aren't trying to spend hundreds of dollars (air fare, hotel, ticket, etc) for a show. But we will buy a DVD or comp of the best moments from these shows.

As far as OKP not being supportive of the Roots, I think those days ended when admins started letting just anything go in The Lesson, as far as topics and tone. It created an atmosphere that was almost hostile to the kind of aesthetic the Roots represent.

Also, rap fans tend not to be loyal to anyone but whoever is hot at the moment. That, combined with the Roots changing their style so often, may be why the Roots get a new core audience every few years.

- boots reilly comin out and doin a Public Enemy medley with black thought.... fuckin dope!
- ?uesto solo.....? KILLED that shit(sounded like some dope effects on the drums)
- double trouble, reality check, respond react... songs you'll usually NEVER hear at a typical roots show.
- the jam with the dude on the keys....

MAAAN, if I only lived in NYC I'd be at every single one of these...

30 incredible shows. This residency should go down in the history books.

It was definitely the highlight of my week, every week.

I wouldnt be surprised if it was revived in 2k10, maybe on a monthly basis instead of weekly. We shall see.

Initially, when I heard that the Roots were going to be on Jimmy Fallon, I was happy because of the exposure they would get and all, but at the same time, I was like- dang, no more shows. Little did I know that I would see them almost as many times at these Jams and other little gigs than I have seen them previously dating from pre-Fallon days all the way back to 1999. (Hammerstein Ballroom w/ Macy Gray and Gang Starr was my first Roots show) l'm sure I have bumped into a bunch of you guys at the jams. I did start to see some familiar faces in the audience. These jams were special because they literally would come up with some funky electric spontaneous jams that would switch from show to show all for the recession price of $10. The last show was pushing close to 3 hours long!

Thanks Roots crew- Look forward to your next endeavors!
