"The Roots in TheWall Street Journal, speak on Game Theory"

The Wall Street Journal
Media & Marketing
In Production / 'Game Theory'
By Christopher John Farley
264 words
17 March 2006
(Copyright (c) 2006, Dow Jones & Company, Inc.)

The Project: The Grammy-winning hip-hop band The Roots is among the few rap acts whose members play their own instruments. So far, the group has enjoyed critical acclaim but only modest sales. Now, in a bid to raise its profile, the band has signed with Def Jam Recordings, a unit of Vivendi Universal's Universal Music Group. "Game Theory," the group's first album for Def Jam, is due out in September. Roots drummer Ahmir Thompson says the new work is "very mature, very serious, very dark."

The Buzz: Shawn Carter, a.k.a. Jay-Z, the president of Def Jam, is a chart-topping rapper and respected music executive. The Roots's presence on his label may persuade fans of harder-edged hip-hop to check out the band. In addition, the group's link to the storied label, which helped to launch LL Cool J and the Beastie Boys in the
1980s and recently signed veteran rapper Nas -- sends the signal that The Roots have real hip-hop roots.

The Outlook: Artists like Outkast, Kanye West and Lauryn Hill have proved that innovative hip-hop can sell millions of albums. If the Roots can come up with an album that critics embrace, and singles that radio stations want to play, there's no reason they can't
post sales comparable with those of their more successful peers. The rapper Common is scheduled to appear on the album and a guest shot by Jay-Z hasn't been ruled out.

Well...did anybody see that coming? I think it's a smart move.(the understatement of the year)
I'm happy for them. Guaranteed increased exposure of their music. Def Jam is gonna be a good home.

you think? i wouldn't think a common appearance would really help out that much, that's not to say i don't like common, but this seems like an anticipated move.

i would think that having guests like nas or jay would do more to push units. maybe even mos def because of his growing hollywood stardom.

but guest spots aren't the solution in my opinion.

the reason the other artists they mention have gone platinum is because of singles. lauryn, kast, and kanye all have multiple #1 singles per album.

that's what the roots need more than anything to truely blow up.

granted this is all my humble opinion, but it's based primarily on things ?uesto posts all the time.

mos def is on the album though.

and im talking about personal taste. remember what happend the last time common and the roots collabed on a roots album?

and this is also based off of the new songs ive heard, what ive read about the album already (cop that remix album if u havent already), and a lot of other shit... not just one guest spot.

as far as personal taste, agreed.

what remix album? how can there be a remix album for game theory if it isn't dropping for 6 months?

i'm intrigued.

OKP hate everything anyway. and why would the roots give a fuck? we're here on their dime, do you really think any of these artisits stay up at night worrying about our opinion. ?uest seems to be salty when folks are overtly negative without reason (and rightly so), but he's going to do his damn thign regardless of what we say.

or Left Jam...

Where artistic integrity and quality outweigh units sold.

Now I'm a little confused as to the direction of the album and what exactly their goal is...

Push units or make an album with substance...

personally, i'd love to hear a band with chip on its shoulder and a sense of urgency in the music.

TTP was a marathon of a lyrical performance, i hope riq can out do it and be a bit more personal with the concepts.

Darker than phrenology?... I don't know. would be dissapointing to anticipate an album this much and this long only for it to be self-indulgent-impossible-to-play-on-a-great-day type ish like electric circus(for example) Critical acclaim is requisite for a roots album but it can often alieanate even the most die hard fans. For me phrenology is as dark as it gets..not that I want Thought to be Mary poppins tho. With jigga at the helm there'll obviously be a harder than before push for sales..regardless of being "Left".He gave em licence to do whatever tho so its bound to be bangin.
