"first single from Game Theory streaming on Giant Step's Jukebox"
Mon May-15-06 11:44 PM by INKtheZionCrewRep

how'd they get the exclusive before Okayplayer? lol

anyway, its called "Don't Feel Right" (featuring Maimouna Yousef) and you can check it here:
http://www.giantstep.net/releases/1032

sounds pretty dope to me
its not what i had expected from the first single, i guess they ditched the "Don't Say Nuthin" method?

definitely feeling the switch-up in the 3rd verse

it's not the use of samples that irks me. i'm obsessively familiar with yr body of work.

it's their pitch.

i woulda raised both samples up a couple semitones each. shit sounds off to me.

BT is lyrically on point again
and i love how the song ends
and i like that theres a short sorta break in there
but
its like irony for the song to be called "dont feel right"
cause
the execution of Maimouna's singing feels ordinary, cliche and is similar every other rap song. that doesn't feel right knowing that she is much more capable than that
the instrumental to the song gets boring after a while, not much desire to listen to it again after the 1st listen
and BT is being his bland self again, im tired of him having no sense of character in his flow, some poster was right and the roots really need a jigga man for the front man

this song kinda feels more like filler for ttp than the lead single for game theory

thats my $ 0.02

it was produced well, the overall end product has a different vibe than what i thought the record version would sound like after hearing it live a few times. The piano stabs were mixed way higher in the live performance making it more of a main melody than an element of a whole as it is now. Good work as usual, still can't wait for the ep.

for real...most cats that complain about hip hop today STILL listen and accept the shit they claim to have disdain for in the current marketplace.

and the thing is i dont know vegans that sneak a lil pork chops every now and then. just because you dont purchase "lean with it rock with it" dont mean that shit dont effect your pallette.

that said:

"character". you ask for "character". have you heard the lyrics to this song? what about it screams a busta animated delievery? or some ying yang shit. or even common?

common's character is his most endearing trait. he is a loveable guy that you want to win. you believe in him. he is earnest. he "tries". he is borderline "suthern gentleman" with an east coast wardrobe.

as far as maimona's "cliched" singing, i think it is rather understated than the forced gospelized "dre day" background singing (blue raspberry anyone?) on most hip hop. no i disagree with you. i wanted her shit right in the middle of "gospel" and sade deadpan. listen again.

i dunno...if we come glossy (dont say nothing) you bitch. now we coming rather vintage east coast (and in the age of hyphy/snap music this is considered a risk) you bitching. i think you having personal issues.

we are not gonna "coon" and yes...most of yall who think you dig a certain element of hip hop just for art sake have no clue that yall are falling for the bamboozeled state of hip hop.

and it is cooning not "charachter".

but that is a whole nother argument.

sorry ol chap. this shit bangs.

I know I might be askin for it here, but here it goes...( hops on the nuts, with slippers on). This track just sounds good. Didn't Hiphop, screw that, didn't MUSIC used to be about a good sound, and or feeling. Some of the most neanderthall ( spelled the way they spell it) music has educated women and men losin they mind without a gil evans arrangement,or joni mitchell lyric anywhere to be found. Crazy crackin drums-check, Well performed effective hook-check, one of the most underated pocket riding MCs ever doing his job-Check! I wanna know whut makes this a less than steller release from this band. Evolution is a tricky bastard! Now if Kanye released this, it would be considered one of the best things he ever did. Maybe I'm wrong, or maybe unconsciously my expectations have dropped. All I know is I'm rockin like a yes man when this comes on. (hop off the nuts, puts hater boots back on...)

don't get me wrong i love the roots, but is it me, or arn't they as creative as they could be? this does seem like a filler for ttp and a cliched rap song. the roots are capable of a hell of a lot more.

To me this doesn't sound like anything on TTP. As some have said, if this is any indication of what to expect on Game Theory I'm excited. Thought is spittin' with conviction and the track is dope. It kinda remind me of some TFA shit but not quite. As far as creativity.. some times simple can be just as dope and get the job done! I cant wait to get home so I can really bump this!

72. "ugh ie "you want tricks""
In response to Reply # 21

look i know we make shit look rather effortless but this is ridiculi! lol
so maybe this is the tom hanks syndrome post forrest gump
you putting on us as in what you think as "ho hum heard this before" nothing
special.

but im sorry, you know how hard it is not to have ONE CORNY line in a hip hop joint today?
show me the corny line.
and i dont wanna hear "why is he so deadpan?" the song calls for "deadpan" the lyrics are about something that dosn't require a "dat skat" flow.

now if you say "well i prefer my roots animated" then i can accept that (im still gonna question it but will accept it) but i think most of you naysayers feel indifference and have no clue as to why you feel this way (and of course i get blamed for it):

take the kast single: the most dangerous thing on "pushing the envelope" is the second you decide to "tone it down" (ie pryor not using "nigger" anymore...the beginning of "soft" "non hard edge" pryor) it just naturally lets down. now i for one am not disappointed in "the mighty oh" simply because i feel the rhymes are tight and the beat is cool. but most of the kast cult first of all can't even admit or conceive that perhaps "bombs over bag"/"hey ya" was more an exercise in image pushing (yes i give credit to where credit is due both songs are great but you CANT dismiss the "look ma no hands" image approach that is andre 3000.) than just "great songs to listen to".

so that said i dont know if we "pushed the envelope" so far to no return--actually i can't recall a first single in the past 10 years that pleased roots fans more than caused them to cry "meh!"---(break you off?, dont say nothing---matter of fact i dont recall no holidays for "dont see us" either)

its an expectations game. and i dont know what kind of "tricks" or fireworks or smoke and mirrors shit we can pull in this era of post modern hip hop (especially when we are celebrating the long done with classic 93 era hip hop)

i mean what are you comparing this song to?

i think this song is better than corners (and before you start dont even reply until you acknowledge that the success of BE had EVERYTHING to do with Com's association with you know who (dont believe me? tell kanye to sit this record out and see what's up...com aint stupid he knows aint nothing going on but private school tuition)---

so again: with no trick to pull (ie the kanye endorsement..and yes admit it..its a trick)
and no suuuthin flow (30 of the top rap joints are down south)

what do you suggest we do?

i try not to be too critical of The Roots on their site, but I can't get into this track at all. Sounds formulaic to me and nothing new. BT is bland in his lyrics, and the female vocals are annoying and feel like i've heard it before. i'm still waiting for BT to actually talk about something, he's still a beast on the mic and has one of the best voices. i like how the beat changed up, but the chorus "don't feel right." i'm disappointed this is their big Def Jam single (if it is).

i ain't hating, just really not feelin' it.

sounds to much like tp material...i was hoping they would go back thier earlier sound or push it in a new direction...i mean its catchy but it feels too produced, i wish they went back to pushing hip hop, this feels like they are just trying to fit in with modern/radio hip hop.

but this is the single and the it is rare nowadays for there to be a single to the track that really impresses me. I do like the "breakdown"

we'll see, but i am really hoping this album is not too much like tipping point. If you ask me, bring back malik, a beat box, and some creativity, forget trying to get that radio track (i know, i know, thats what pays the bills). Every album seemed to try something different and this single gives me the feeling like they are just trying to take a tipping point and give it more over-production.

In the name of the father, the iverson, and the holy spirit.

what in the world is on radio today that sounds like this.

for real.

no bait-o

and i SWEAR i aint tryna engage the naysayers into anytype of debate---ie yall being afraid to say what's on your minds.

but if you gonna make a point i want that shit to be bulletproof.

pushing hip hop?

what is pushing hip hop.

first of yall you can't dismiss that most of yall are streaming this song listening on small ass computer speakers (in other words i doubt you are banging this in the whip where the shit truly counts)

wow i really had cats wrong on this.

i avoided the easy chipmunk route
i avoided the cymbal crash emphasizing the hook ie just blaze
i avoided the "yall do the same shit over" thing with no rhodes/dilla isms
no shuffles or stop on the dime club rhythms ("Fatty Girl" "fiesta")
even took my trademark snaps out just so i would'nt get accused of biting something i been doing on my records since day one.

what breakbeat on radio does this sound like?

like did i bite a pattern?

or did you mean the girl?

but yet and still i doubt you'd scoff at mary j singin "you're all i need to get by"

and even at that this aint even a love song! lol

so i beg of all you cats. step from out the shadow of the alias (why are all the naysayers under 1000? lol) like help me understand what you expect from us.

(shrugs)

maybe you just outgrown us.

i dont know what more to say.

this shit bangs the fuck outta my ride. kicks are deep and my snare pops. and as far as being "impressed"

what trick do you want?

yall looking for tricks to keep you entertained.

for real...i want a real known okaycritic to come with something concrete that i can understand.

go wake up buildingblock. play him this so i can unnderstand what standard yall putting me in...i'll be damned if i get raked over the coals for doing EASILY the closest thing to the anti roots "break you off"/"dont say nothing" shit i knew yall were gonna hate.

if you looking for "tricks" (wow! he can scat and rhyme at the same time!! cool!!!!)
or "personality" (wow! the way he said "raaaow raoow like a dungeon dragon!!!!" cool!!!)
or the i know its coming "where's hov?" "where's nas?" "where's ghost?" "where's kanye?" post...i mean that to me reads "easy". i enjoy the art of all my label mates but that to me is starting on the wrong foot.

why can't we just be consistant on our 3 pointers? like we gotta 360 monster jam shit from the half court EVERYtime?

"wow you hear that drum and bass thing on you got me?"

sorry folks...that was called "a trick"---look "innovative" or "cutting edge" but at the end of the day that was a seaworld "trick".

the beauty/coolness of "you got me" was that it was a great song. not "the drum shit at the end". that was my dave letterman stupid human trick/cherry on top.

dog,please...

come with some uptempo shit, with a bassline o.k. ?

I talked to a straight hip-hop dummy who summed the Roots up perfectly, and I quote:

"These guys stuff is all mid-tempo, it's not soft, but it's more like wallpaper, nothing ever jumps out, the beats are COOL, the rhymes are COOL...but it's usually pretty flat"

I feel that that dummy spoke for once with some serious insight.
He's right.
Y'all play it a little too safe (BPM/Dynamic wise).
You get a lil' crazy and it's like Scooby ate too many pot brownies (Water)

Now I'm really not trying to crack, cuz you posed the question.

I remember when Late Registration came out, my first reaction to "Crack Music" was I would love it if "the Roots" sounded like this (as a band...in a room with a mic) on a track.

This joint sounds like you and Kamal collaborated two individual pieces into a beat. Where's Hub? Where's Knuckles?, Where's Capt. Kirk?

If it's gonna be like that...just let Thought shine over the Dilla beat. That has a bassline, a dope beat, and is UPTEMPO.

and I'm not trying to rake you over the coals, player.

It seems you're trying to please more than one master.

If you gotta do radio...blow radio away. This track ain't gonna blow radio away. This is gone Ghostface and not even be on the radar by the time the album drops.

I ain't saying you gotta go club single, but y'all do too many tracks for the "bitches" (that's that mid-tempo shit again)...I consider it the "Apple Martini Movement".

If y'all niggas ain't got nothing that sounds like a BAND freaking the "jungle boogie" sample on some Bomb Squad/Dilla ish with Thought ripping it...then fuck it...you gonna be grumblin' about Gnarls Barkley eating your dinner and Andre and Big Boi wearing your shoes this time next year.

I wish you'd hear me though.

but JIHAD definitely has a point. Sometimes I wish yall would take some risks. What I love is that you groove like a muthafucka every time so mindblowingly well, and i could listen to that roots all day. But sometimes you gotta do something different, maybe real uptempo, like showing the band off more.

That being said this joint is bangin, and as long as your making music this dope im not complaining at all. im just suggesting that one day you do something a little more spontaneous or in your face.

This is a suggestion for the future. as for game theory as long as its dope im happy.

thought@work was 110 bpms
the seed was 115 bpms

i've done uptempo shit before.

and what does speed have to do with a good effective song?

the fastest song on the top 100 is 100bpms ("tell me when to go") the rest are sitting somewhere between 80-90 bpms.

im not saying "im following the marketplace" but if your answer is "we would like this if you just went faster like the other faster things out" then i would have to bring up the point that most of the shit out today that is "success" is waaaaaaaaay under this son bpm wise.

I talked to a straight hip-hop dummy who summed the Roots up
>perfectly, and I quote:
>
>"These guys stuff is all mid-tempo, it's not soft, but it's
>more like wallpaper, nothing ever jumps out, the beats are

i did the "jump out" record called phrenology. again just because you got fast bpms does that mean i can just discount the other elements that make a song a success?

>I feel that that dummy spoke for once with some serious
>insight.
>He's right.
>Y'all play it a little too safe (BPM/Dynamic wise).
>You get a lil' crazy and it's like Scooby ate too many pot

well...again. the fact that i am a root within itself is the risk. this is the tom hanks/allen iverson in his 9th year reaction. hanks is a master and after phila/big/gump/road to/ryan/toy/seattle/cast away---i mean after awhile a critic said that hanks is so good in his work that to praise him becomes cliched.

now i aint saying everything i touch turns to gold. but you also can't say that this song ranks with the filler from the Ghetto Superstar album either. and compared to the shit you dealing with now? i find it really some curious shit that im getting picked on over this.

>Now I'm really not trying to crack, cuz you posed the

so the idea of the roots fulfilling your fantasy is better than the idea of the roots making a good song?

the roots ain't made no striped down hip hop since "clones"--i mean need i make a list of "Stripped Down" hip hop? if you a "head" then you questioning why i made a stripped down jawn confuses me. that's like me asking the bomb squad circa 87 why "dont believe the hype" was slower than "rebel"/"noize" and with half the samples. i mean it aint the end of the world if mofos sit one out right? this is just a piano/drum song.

something we NEVER done before.

>If it's gonna be like that...just let Thought shine over the

no...i'm only trying to please myself.
you bring that subject up again like we aint never used a "bassline", or the drums aint knocking (if these drums dont knock to you i question the system you listening on.
and ive done shit at high speed, and ive done shit at slow speed.

>If you gotta do radio...blow radio away. This track ain't
>gonna blow radio away. This is gone Ghostface and not even be

what the hell yall smoking? this sounds like the "radio" attempt cause we got a girl singing the hook? the reason why SHE singing it cause if i sing it the windows will shatter! lol....oh god yall got this SO WRONG....

i am a DJ
this is 2006.

if you gonna go radio--you need to follow in the marketplace. this hip hop im tryna keep alive for yall mofos is all but DEAD in the eyes of radio.

this does NOT sound like the cousin of "the whisper song" or remotely remind you of it!!!!!
is "lean with it ,rock with it" the song you thought we were doing?
what about that chamillionare joint "ridin" that what you thought we thought we was doin?
or "oh i think they like me"? that gotta be it
or "snap your fingers"?
or that din da da ying yang song?

matter of fact...lets go to billboard:

ti-what you know
chamillionare-ridin
yung joc-its goin down
dem franchise boyz-lean with it, rock with it
bubba sparks-ms new booty
lil jon-snap your fingers
field mob-so what
50 cent-best friend

what song was we tryna approximate? the whole top 100 looks like this list. oh please don't pat yourself on the back for this one.

O.k. T.A.W. was doper with the Beatles sample...THAT would've been a good look. Wait...was that a single? Y'all need a single that ROCKS...
hear me when I say drop the Thought/Dilla/Dice Raw joint as is...cats foam at the mouth whenever they hear it (not necessarily knowing who the hell it is either)

The Seed was better as Cody's song on Cody's album. It got you a lot of play, and a gang of new audience. But are you following through with that sound? No.

I'm saying give me this song with a "moving" bassline and not just some dumbed down piano loop and we're talking.

Like I said, you should've inverted the middle 8 loop to be the meat and potatoes of the song. Why? Cause it's got more shit to move to than that stiff ass piano loop. (read that part slowly 2 or 3 times)f

>i've done uptempo shit before.
>
>and what does speed have to do with a good effective song?

Effective song is what you want as a first single.
Remember when Prince clowned Wendy & Lisa for the Waterfalls video...

Y'all be coming with the Waterfalls video/song more often than not.
Mid-tempo joint that's locked down but generally kind of dull...
fuck tryna sound like a loop nigga ZIGGABOO MODELISTE that shit. OPEN THE HIGH-HAT 30 times in one song.
Y'all ish be kinda like leggos.

>the fastest song on the top 100 is 100bpms ("tell me when to

Not what I'm saying at all Ahmir.
You've got a band. Not many hip-hop groups in the top 10,20 or otherwise have a band.
You need to show that band ROCKING THE CROWD w/ a song with MAD CRAZY ENERGY AS YOUR DEBUT SINGLE FOR DEF JAM.

The crowd wants to identify with that BAND...
slow or fast...whatever, come with some "KING OF ROCK" shit or a "SUCKER MC's". You thinking too hard coming with that mid-tempo again.

Play a old '73 soul train dance line video with the sound off...you're first single should sync up to whatever those free ass negroes were getting buck too...

After you cats did "RAW" at the VH-1 Honors...everyone who saw that clip was like "I WANT MORE ROOTS LIKE THAT!!!!"

this ain't that, THAT will cut through all the top 20,10 shit, this will not (sorry charlie, I'll put money on it)

If the RockSteady Breakers can't fuck with it...don't put it out as a first single. Feel me?

folks see 6 niggas in the picture and hear 3 on the record.

Booo!

phrenology was o.k., I'm not asking for "phrenology" though.
I'm asking for "She Watch Channel Zero", ain't no "She Watch Channel Zero's" on Phrenology, player. Overstand what I'm saying.

"YOU JUST SIGNED TO DEF JAM YOU'RE FIRST SINGLE SOUNDS LIKE ___________"

sure, expectations can get high after reading liner note after liner note detailing the battles with Geffen/MCA/Geffen...but now you've gone and made a record that could've been on Illadelph or T.T.P.
as I said...the vocals/lyrics are tight...but y'all ain't light no fireworks in my opinion.

Of course it bangs in your whip.

I tried to bang it in mine...and it was just "AIIGHT"

dog, if you gonna strip it down. STRIP IT DOWN. First Priority sounded stripped down, BDP "POETRY" sounds stripped down. This sounds like y'all recorded it in 3 studios on 4 coasts.

yeah...make that list.

Follow the Leader was stripped down, but mastered so terribly you can't tell.

This is nowhere near Follow the Leader.

Shit...I wish y'all would bring some "don't believe the hype" or "rebel/noize" type shit. Hear me...I WISH!!!
Not this bassless,1/2 a RZA stuff.

How much would it cost to do a bring the noize/don't believe the hype jam to your liking?

do you have anything like that instore?

Again...don't sleep on that Thought/Dilla track. That shit is a crackhouse on FIRE.

You stupid for trying to sneak a mid-tempo protest song on the radio with all that shit you listed in the top whatever.

The girl on the hook will pull in the bitches and you know it,son.

You trying to argue. I'm trying to suggest some shit as a fan who can bend your ear back. After the last 2 albums...y'all need to come with some Rage Against The Machine-Battle of Los Angeles shit.

As I've stated I'm feeling the vocals, but the track is lackluster.
I'm almost expecting Keith Murray to come on talking shit.

I can't wait to hear the rest.
considering y'all are up against Outkast,Fugees and Busta Rhymes on some "cats that have SOME credibility" tip... I can't wait.
And for once I refuse to read the fucking liner notes...
the songs will have to stand on there own...no anecdotes about the ghost of Jimi Hendrix programming motifs through infants.

it's not so bad, just jump off of an exploding speaker or something.

Just enjoy the music man!!! This is a dope song, take it for what it is! If you want something uptempo then go purchase some uptempo shit. Or better yet, since you have all these wonderful ideas of what a good hip hop record should sound like, why don't you get in the studio and make this shit happen?!? And no I ain't a dick rider but you seem to be going out of your way to HATE on this song. Do you think Quest, Thought, Kamal, and Hub went in the studio like, "Yeah we gonna make a jawn just for JIHAD"? GTFOOHWTBS The Roots are moving on and expanding their sound! Give me 2 Roots Albums (Major Releases) That sound alike....

i agree w/ most of what you just said. i'm happy we got a taste of
the new roots album. this song is okay to me, but nothing to get too
excited about. especially when intended as a single.

maybe it's an expectancy thing, but why not cater to that a little.
i'm not talking tricks, i'm talking about that energy you guys have
onstage. take that to the studio. you hardly do that imho.

>Of course it bangs in your whip.

at first listen i wasn't feelin it. i don't get into "i don't like how the drums sound", etc. I don't get too technical, i just go for how the track feels to me and if i can get into it. i'm not expecting y'all to go in a certain direction, or use any kind of sound that's on the radio.

you're right, this sounds like nothing on the radio, and that's what I love about y'all, and you still do you despite the criticisms of the past two albums. that said, after many more listens, I really do like the song now. sometimes it takes time to grow on me. at first the thing that was bothering me most was the singing...and its not like i don't want any singing, i just wasn't feeling that, but after more listens it fits the song well. drums kick hard, and as i pay attention to BT's lyrics, i like what he's spittin.

?uest i know you want some bulletproof reasons why some cats don't like this song, but some just hear it and it might not grab them. some get real technical and break the track down to its parts and don't like it, and some want you to conform to something that they want to hear.

anyway, i ain't saying i like it now because you're responding to posts, i just gave it more listens and i'm feeling it. i never look for certain things from artists, if i connect with the song and it sounds good to me than cool.

i'm excited to hear the rest of the album.

dirty and extra loud

can't wait to hear this live. its so simple (instrumental wise) that i knwo they can freak the hell out of it.

and thoughts lyrics are as usual on point.

i can see the video already, but im not getting my hopes up.

the fellas don't really have good video karma que no?

i see them examining an ever changing world, tkaing things from the song literally. driving the messaage home. don't leave anythign for the viewer to figure out. star did that and people got confused.

but yeah i dig the song, and this makes me want to hear the rest of gt

I love the Roots, but this song isn't catchy to me and doesn't make me want to buy the new album. I like it, though - but not enough to play more than once. I like the concept, it's the way it's executed that bothers me.

its definitely not what i expected but that happens on every roots album. thought's lyrics are nice but nothing spectacular or different from the past. the chorus is meh. the beat is probably the highlight but its not spectacular either. its definitely listenable and definitely has me wanting to hear the rest of the album, but i can't say this song was a "banger" or anything. sorry ?uest.

Great track IMO. Remeber this is the first SINGLE, and so if the single sounds this good (read:raw hip-hop and not on some Don't Say Nuthin BET tip) the rest of the album won't dissapoint.

- Love the beat.
- Actually feeling Kamal's key line, and I been kinda down on his creativity lately.
- The sample stabs are a nice touch.
- The breakdown at 3:16 is beautiful.

This shit sounds from the heart, so I give props to the crew for putting this out first. It sounds like a gamble in terms of a single (not that radio-friendly, but since I don't listen to the radio I could care less), but I give respect for taking the risk and blessing us with something like this off the bat.

This track is nothing but pure fire.

Man I am seriosuly shocked people are hateing on it, from start to finish it bangs, the drums are ridicolus, the chourous is nice, great samples and the flow of BT is on point.

It all blends so nice, just transports you into the music.

I know we all got different tastes but serious, if your not feeling this I dont know, maybe its time to figure out if you really like hip-hop.

Just my 2 cents. Cant wait for the album. Big up ?uest and crew.

I'm not afraid to admit that.

I'm gettin old.

Thought At Work, Boom and Web are the last of the great Roots songs, imo.

Some rhyme-tastic, MC channeling, non-stop, boom-bap, TRICKS songs.

TRICKS are NOT for kids, in fact, they're for people slowing outgrowing the genre.

So to get my full praise, modern rap acts have to either

A) PERFECTLY capture a moment from the 80s/90s

B) Do something totally crazy but yet effective (B.O.B., The Cold Vein, Neptunes)

C) Have some kinda cool image. (Kanye/Clipse/Kast)

I've had an epiphany. This has nothing to do with the Roots.I even hat e that new Kast which I neverevavavavavavavav thought would happen. In fact most hip hop bores me. I have become Brainchild.

Damn, that felt great!

not even trying to play you or whatever, but id hate to get to the point where a good "regular" hip hop song isnt good enough for me...i mean especially nowadays. is it just because its the roots and they are put on a pedistol? well when they gave people more tricks people dissed it (phrenology) and when they stripped it down people "eh"'d it (ttp) what is left to do but whatever the heck you want to do? (game theory...i hope)

if i was in that situation i would defintely do whatever i felt like and give up on trying to impress people if they keep letting you down...and thats when you've won...

and the same goes for Kast.

There may be something to ?uest's point that the palate of the populous has changed.

I think he took it a little far though, because it's not like I/we don't "recognize" good stuff when we hear it. (Which is what I think he was trying to say)

That's not it. It's that "regular" ain't regular no more. Regular's what's the radio.

And while groups like the Roots and Kast will always be my base (in that I know they really bring it), that base WILL get elevated in their absence.

It's a little counterintuitive, man. You'd think that after long periods of eating slop, you'd be THANKFUL for a hamburger with all the fixings. But instead, I, and a lot of people are like "What? No steak?" And if you give steak, then it doesn't matter, it'll keep escalating. They/I need a higher high, each time.

Kast actually took it higher and higher and crazier with each album. And the Roots too with a few miscues imo.

So at the current tally, I'm expecting some really expensive sushi from the Roots. And I got a fish sandwich. Good? Yes. Nutritious? Probably. But not what I had a taste for. And maybe that CAN be related to what's on the radio.

From Kast? I was expected an alien delicacy. And I got some bare bones track that didn't even sound finished. I'll take it, but not what I had a taste for.

Given this crazy mindstate that I (and other "supporters" hold), it's completely reasonable for them to do them and not pay us too much attention.

Cause at the end of the day, I'll buy the album. And I'll be at Radio City this weekend, lol.

i love the fact quest jumps on for some rebuttal, noone has stated a remotely significant reason why this song is worth so much scorn. what direction as far as a group or artists are you looking for them to follow. for mine "The Roots" are one of a very exclusive group in which each album is followed by a superior piece of work. their songs are such that love at first sight rarely happens. they grow on you and for mine there last release continues to grow on me, their not bird bath depth songs you need some scuba gear for some of there shit. wait for the album i reckon the cliches are coming from the haters not the band, more raw hiphop, more tricks, too radio friendly, more dywm, tfp type songs these are cookie cutter excuses, if your still there the lovers love it far more than the haters hate it. keep it coming

ps (if there was 1 complaint its that there isnt enough of it)

I read every comment before listening to the new jawn.
The General sentiment that pops up a few times here and
there was sounds like some "filler" TTP type jawn.
It is documented and um Remix or scratch mag(one of them)
that their will be some tracks from the TTP sessions on GT.
When i first read that, I was like man no!! we folks deserve "fresh tracks"
not something imo that was not good enough to make the cut for TTP? What makes
them good enough to GT? With that said I dont know the creative process of
the legendary or even what the overall album will sound like but I will purchase
like I always have since I was um...... 19. Okay so I will be 30 this year and still hail
illadelph/halflife as one of my favorite albums period when it comes to hip-hop.
this album was lyrically surprioer and ill on production.
Im going off track but back to the single. I was first taken in by the sample
probably most famous flip by E double back in the day.
I like the song though I can't front BT is nice like the vibe of it.
on a side note I was at a recent Roots show Jean grae was like
where the 70's babys at "yayayayaWW"(from the crowd) then she say where the 80's
babys at? "awawawawawawawawWWWAWAWAWAWAWAWA!!!"(from the crowd)
WOW Roots fanbase has changed man I felt old and isolated lol. I gone support this album
and make a fair judgement with hardcopy inhand though its only fair.

peace.

In response to Reply # 107

of TTP got co-opted by the attraction of certain executives at Interscope with Don't Say Nuttin', so maybe, hopefully there are some tracks that were created that were really fresh, but simply didn't fit with the album.

I like the song well-enough, but i want to preface this by saying that i WILL buy the album on the day it's released, no doubt, so it's not like i'm not going to support the band.

* big exhale *

I think this is their best effort to take the 'mountain to muhammad'. it's a good song, it's straight forward, it's distinctive. i guess the best way to describe this song is 'effective' like he mentioned on the boards around the time TTP was about to drop.

It feels like I've listened to the band for the past 13 years, but I still don't know the band. When i heard the instrumentals on TTP (Melting Pot and Din Da Da) i thought the band had finally hit their stride, that they had found something different than what the average band could put together. kind of like a superband, but for hip-hop.

But that being said, i don't like the singles the group picks initially. and it takes the music a little while to grow on me before i actually 'get' it. if it sounds like i'm hating, i don't mean to and given what the band is up against (being on a new label, coming off an album that screwed with the band's psyche, being a near anachronism in their field) i think this is a solid song.

i was thinking that The Roots are as close to 'un-filtered' hip-hop as you can get. it's high-quality, well-thoughtout, and aesthetically pleasing. but that's the image that would work well to attract a music historian or someone new to music, i don't know what that means to the average hip-hop listener...

((( (( ( my rambling thoughts ) )) )))

the live version done last year and the studio version are both great to me...

but the currently performed live version using the NORE "Superthug" beat... yuck!!!

What was the deal with that choice? It sounds much better with those piano stabs they used to use when performing it with Maimouna...

I've listened to the track about 20 times already now and it really grows on u. Put it onto CD and listen on a full stereo and you will see the quality of the song. As a single I think its an excellent choice, should connect with black and white audiences of all ages.

The drums are quality! Glad its an organic sound.

When is single released??

After all these albums I dont know what I expect in a lead off track from them. I mean, the song is great, but I dont think its gonna fly off for a new audience (the brainless 17-23 year old Def Jam audience).

So yeah, I hope it does good at radio, but I didnt get that wow factor

Really feelin this. Like someone else said, give it 15-20 spins before you hate it. If Def Jam can get these cats some airplay and some time to saturate the market, I feel this single could really be successful. Sounds strange to say, but I could see some BEP-lovin' soccer moms gettin down to this alongside Roots fans who dig the TFA keys and dirty drums. Nice work and def their best first single since You Got Me.

Is it just me and these speakers, but I don't think I heard any bass. That's very interesting. Not necessarily a bad thing. I just don't think I've ever heard a hip hop song without bass that I remember. Even if it's minimil. But still, I like it. Thought definitely brings it. He's sounding hungry again. I thought he was a bit sloppy on some tipping point songs (esp. star). Looking forward to hearing more!

Hey now boys and girls - this sounds good to me - nice beat, nice hook fom Maimouna and nice piano - good choice for a first single

I have to say I am still expecting something heavier on GT.

Cheers
