"The Roots Need To Go Back To RAPPIN Their Choruses"
Sat May-27-06 07:03 PM by Mellow My Man

seems like they got some singing on every chorus nowadays. they didn't rap ONE chorus on the tipping point. this new track they got(don't feel right") is crazy. the beat is straight up raw...but then you hear this chic singin and it just don't sound right. that beat would sound perfect with a rapped chorus. it's a shame, cause the roots got some of the illest rappin hooks of all time..."no alibi"..."proceed"..."push up lighter".."concerto of desperado". the roots use to always switch it up...some rap choruses..some singin ones...and it was fresh. but when you got singin on every hook, it just gets old. anybody else feel the same way?

homie, stop your babblin. did you even read what i said? it's coo to have some singin hooks here & there, but when you do it every damn track, it gets old. i could give a fuck who's singin the hook, so stop gettin all emotional cause i dropped a little criticism. isn't that what this board is for?....or is it just to dickride EVERYTHING the roots do?...yall need to chill with that. yall be comin off very cultish & shit. afraid to give a little honest feedback. i was just givin my opinion, and here comes Mr."OK" gettin all pissed & shit. just cause you got an "OK" next to your name don't make you bigger...be a man and think for yourself for once...and let others think for themselves too. stop tryin to be some type of internet police & $hit. i would appreciate it if you responded, and not just delete this thread like yall always do around here. peace. homie

first of all you talking way too familiar for a cat with just 47 posts.
second of all i got 9 albums with my groups name on em and the ratio
of singing to whatever the chorus should be in your head is slim money.
so how is that so "tired".
yall acting like this was some deliberate attempt to get on radio
"duh...hey yall lets get an rnb bitch and ride this radio thing til the wheels fall off!"
first of all getting a "singer" to get on the radio is so 1997.
the new radio is....i dont even wanna offend folks with what it is. but if you look at
ALL the shit that is winning right now in "hip hop"---singing is NOT the common denominator.

and dude im a fucking musician, cut me a break if i got singers laying around to be utilized then that is my right.

and "winning" wasn't even the point. but since im here let's look at the marketplace:

tell me the last "rap" song with "rapping" in the chorus that won.

ghead get at me dog.

NO! LIST
Tom Petty
M J
Zeppelin
Springsteen
Neil Young
Eagles
Ray Charles
Madonna
Chuck Berry
South Park TV Songs
Justin Timberlake
"Food Glorious Food"
"Twilight Zone" theme
"A Boy Named Sue"
"Night Moves"

yeah i got 47 posts, but if you look just ONE line above that..you'll see that i joined in 2003. remarakable aint it

and it seems this is the 2nd time you've skimmed through my post. this shit aint got nothin to do with gettin radio play...i just feel the singin in the track wasn't necessary...is that so hard to believe?...the singin is "tired" because yall seem to be overdoing it lately. "what they do".."you got me"...singing was perfect for those tracks. "don't feel right"...not so much. that beat is hard...thought came off...i just felt it would've been much better with a rap chorus. i like my "rap" songs to have a "rap" chorus..so sue me. i aint hatin on the song, i already said the shit was crazy. i'm just givin a little feedback on somethin i wasn't feelin. is that okay wit you?..or do i gotta kiss your ass like the rest of the dudes on this site? it's you're right to utilize the singers around you..just like it's my right to have an opinion. everybody's not gonna be feelin EVERY little thing yall do. yall could release the worst track in hip-hop history and everybody on here will be kissin ass just because they know yall be on here. i could give a fuck...that shit don't impress me. i'm a grown man from the hood...still in the hood...i say what i feel. i respect you for what you've done & accomplished...i got all yall muthafukkin albums. yall got the sickest discography in hip-hop history hands down. but your arrogant-elist "act" is gettin old. let muthafukkas say what they feel without tryin to sway their thoughts. if yall drop somethin wack it aint really "wack", it's "different"...it's "artistic"..we just don't understand it...homie..wack is wack.

and since you asked..the last "rap" song with a "rap" chorus that "won" was a song titled "lose yourself"...by a rapper named Eminem. yeah, i know..it's eminem...but you asked a question, and i gave you an answer. a right answer.

you just proved his point. "Lose Yourself" came out in 2002. So the last "rap" song with a "rap" chorus that "won" was 4 years ago. thats few and far between.

im not trying to dickride or 'back up' ?uesto on this one... but your ignorance is baffling so i had to chime in.

why don't you read more Carefully before you make comments. when i said "wack is wack" i wasn't referring to their new song, i was referring to all the times quest has somethin to say when somebody calls out a wack song. i've seen it plenty of times on here. somebody disses a wack roots track, and there's quest callin em out...sayin they don't understand it..blah blah blah. if a mothafukka think's it's wack, then that's how he feels. people aren't gonna be feelin EVERY roots track. even the most die-hard roots fans. only difference is, very few got the balls to come out and say it cause quest posts on the board. but fuck that...be a man, and stop ridin dicks.

and 4 years is not that far dawg. if Eminem dropped "lose yourself" today it would still win. and besides..quest said this aint about winning, so what is it about then?...what was the point of the question? i didn't have no underlying messages about the singin in their hooks. quest just took it the wrong way. i like the roots rap hooks better than i do their singin ones...that was my ONLY point...i didn't say nothin about radio play, or about winnin awards...yall did. make one little remark and all of a sudden i'm a hater. go read my first post again...do i come off as a hater?...nah..i made a remark and asked if yall agree....but like always..yall take it up the ass. so i ask YOU....would you rather the roots go back to their rappin hooks or keep at it with the singin ones?...yo can PM me your answer if your not ready for the backlash.

you're *still* missing the point.

i said its "few and far between". its not a question of whether that song would have worked/won today, its that its been 4 years (which IS a long time) since the last 'good' rap song without a singing chorus (according to you).

and as far as your dickiding comments... son, get over yourself. you're talking like you are the ONLY person here who has the tesitcles to bad mouth a roots track. please go read that first "dont feel right" thread (here, and the one in the lesson) and read all the mixed feelings and hate in there. the majority was feelin it, but there was a fair amount of people who voiced their displeasure, so it was definately a mixed bag of feelings.

i was referring to all the times quest has somethin to
>say when somebody calls out a wack song. i've seen it plenty
>of times on here. somebody disses a wack roots track, and
>there's quest callin em out...

that's because i am the only hip hop artist with a relevant career that even cares to interact with internet critics. yall better thank your stars for me, cause i know mofos that come to okayplayer (if the artists dont come here they got a girlfriend or a groupie or a cousin that come here and snitch on yall) and they wind up seeing me and i wind up calming them down from wanting to shoot yall asses.

i just rebut.

some of yall signed your death warrant and dont even know that shit.

no exag-o. this is the ONLY site i know that lets mofos get away with murder in the name of free speech.

meanwhile my peer group who dont understand the net ready to fuck me up over yall opinions.

so yeah...i find that if people who can't even do the job to whom they are criticizing are passing judgment---then yeah...a mofo is likely wanting to get up in that ass.

i just rebut.

if you got the nerve to print it. be prepared to deal with me. i think that is a fair deal.

sayin they don't understand
>it..blah blah blah. if a mothafukka think's it's wack, then
>that's how he feels. people aren't gonna be feelin EVERY roots
>track. even the most die-hard roots fans.

i actually find my "fanbase" the hardest mofos to please....so this aint nothing new. you think the shit shoulda been done some other way...and i say you are misinformed. its my song and im satisfied with it.

only difference is,
>very few got the balls to come out and say it cause quest
>posts on the board. but fuck that...be a man, and stop ridin
>dicks.

this "i aint a dickrider" shit is actually the new dickrider of 2006. the "im an individual" steeze. first of all this dont deserve its own post. so right there you in the wrong. this alone proves th----no name calling...nevermind.

>and 4 years is not that far dawg. if Eminem dropped "lose
>yourself" today it would still win.

dude "lose yourself" could drop eons for now and you would miss the point:

em is a white man doing a black mans art.

when are yall gonna get through yall heads that the song aint got SHIT to do with anything. in this sundae the song aint even the ice cream. the song is the lil jimmie's sprinkled on top. the basis of yall "accepting" a song is based on a SCILLION factors that yall dont even know has seeped into your brains:

-how rich they are
-how cute they are
-how they ride looks
-who they fucking
-the clothes they rock
-how they talk
-their lifestyle
-if they got shot

all these things

if we did "lose yourself" note for nt----sheeeit if we did "gold digger" or "the way you move" mofos would LAUGH us off the stage!!!

shit aint about the song!

shit is about all that surrounds it.

it SHOULD be about the song. but most hip hop fans dont know they drunk the kool aid.

so yes.

if "lose yourself" came out today? it would win simply because

em is white
em is crazy
em hates his mom
em kills his girl on songs
em's homophobia keeps him in the news
em has the endorsement of the black man that most whites think is credible
em has discovered "the most dangerous" man in hip hop
em got arrested on charges of violence to his girl
em grew up in the worst inner city in america
em was poor white trash
em was a misfit
em is the richest fuck ever
em is always mired in controversy
em is hated
em is debated
em is xrated

you think em is a winner cause he is a good rapper?

em is a mc with respect because that keeps him being bulletproof and always 6 steps ahead of vanilla iceville.

mags wont burn em down because as long as his face can sell for them that means $

so again..."lose yourself" was sung. (i mean "the real slim shady" or "my name is" was more "spoken" than "lose")---but the fact that you even use em's name as an example...shows me that you are coming from a naive place: em will win because of the above list.

most important is em is white. and white priv still carries big weight in the us of a. he knows that...

your post came off like the levee has broken on the hook singing for the roots and im like how is that even a factor of judging hip hop when NO ONE judges that in hip hop....

why am i even being QUESTIONED when LAFFY TAFFY was number one for friggin 5 weeks?

and if you were me you'd be saying the same shit.

what am i suppose to thank you now? like i said man..i'm in the hood RIGHT NOW. so all that "death warrant" and other bullshit means nothing to me. some rappers being mad about some shit that i say is the LEAST of my worries homie..believe that. and i don't even come on here talkin reckless in the first place...if my comments were reckless to you than you a very senstive person.

i agree with that. that's why i said i respect yall. all i did was state that i would like to hear yall rappin some choruses again and you brought up a very weak argument. i don't know if you were tired or just angry..but the argument was weak. i don't know how you could say otherwise. i said i wish yall would get back to rappin some choruses, and you brought up lauryn hill, and said that i'm a fiend for fame???...that shit is so offbase that it's rediculous.

>i actually find my "fanbase" the hardest mofos to please....so
>this aint nothing new. you think the shit shoulda been done

that's coo. and i never said yall "shoulda" done anything. i just gave my opinion, and that's it.

see the thing is...dudes on here riding yall aint as much about them not havin the balls to say anything, cause really...what are yall gonna do?....it's more that these dudes just wanna be "friendly" with one of their favorite artists. makes them feel a little closer to yall. and don't even front like you aint experienced some serious dickriding on this site. i mean just look at this thread...is it any surpise that not ONE person has come in here and agreed with me. not one person has come in here and said "yeah you right, the roots should start rappin their hooks again"...you mean to tell me not one person agrees with my original post? everybody comin in here tryin to Prove YOUR points. tryin to make me into some type of badguy cause i'm arguing with one of their "favorite" artists.

you like your shit in the past.

even with the examples you gave were all 1994 shits

like who the hell has rapping in their chorus anymore on some mobb deep shit?

and regardless of your 3 year status, im sorry your "constructive criticism" comes off naive.

its what we felt the song called for...actually the chorus came before the lyrics. its not like we keeping track of "hmmm what is the percentage of sung choruses to rapped choruses", its not even like im asking "what is the success rate of sung to rapped" but i do know that with the slim exception of maybe a "shook ones" i aint never heard a rapped chorus win on radio.

now even if you "aren't" talking about "winning" and just saying that the song needed a "rapped" chorus ala "proceed" or..."section" then i will tell you that they idea of rapping the chorus seems rather ancient to me. even when it isn't "sung" there is still some melody to it (even "the real slim shady" has a "sung" feel to it even though its rapped, same with "breathe and stop") but i get the feeling you trying pass this off as some "corny" rnb attempt and its not even close to that.

this is why i gave you the lauryn question.

now if you front on "everything is everything" and you fronted on "all fall down" and you fronted on "the way you move" and you fronted on "the love song" and you fronted on "ms fat booty" and you fronted on "they say" and you fronted on "shopping bags" and gold digger" and "lucifer" and "21 questions" i mean i can go down my itunes list if you want me to....all them joints in some peoples eyes are classic material and if not, they stick to a mofos memory like grits.

so am i to believe that you have a problem with THOSE songs being as though 99.44% of hip hop fans like those songs?

so why you picking on my shit when i can name shit waaaaaaaaaaaay more deliberate than that?

come on now man. you know what i mean by "sing"....yes, every chorus has a melody to it, but i'm talkin about actual "singing". and yes..i can admit...i did feel the singing was a "corny" rnb attempt. the beat was hard...it just didn't sound right with singin on the hook. i aint speakin for everyone..i'm speaking for ME. which is why i asked "do yall agree" in my original post. i aint sayin change the shit..i'm simply givin my opinion and that's it.

nah...i love pretty much all those songs. but you so in the dark right now it's hilarious. you tryin to act like i got some type of vendetta against yall. i've already told you i'm a huge fan. the only group i would put in front of yall is prolly the wu, and that's it. and this aint changed that...this aint nothin but a discussion. i'm still gonna go buy yall album the first day that it drops, and it'll be the same with the rest of yall albums...cause i know the shits will be crazy. it's just that yall got some of the sickest rap choruses of all time, and lately it seems like yall been settlin for the generic rnb hook. i aint sayin i'm right...i'm just sayin that's what it sounds like someitmes. if yall happy with that shit, then do you. i'll still cop the album. but i'll still be here to give yall my criticism. if i spend 15 dollars on the damn thing, i earned the right to speak my mind on the shit. i've been in so many discussions about the roots it would blow your mind. and 99% of the time i was arguing FOR yall. but this time..i decided to drop a little criticism. as a long time roots fan whose dropped plenty of money on yall work, i feel i deserve that.

ummm.. didn't the 1st single off TTP have a rappin' hook also?

second of all, who cares? good music is good music... and the art of the hook isn't the same as the art of the verse. songwriters say that all the time.

and since when did "need" mean "should"?...should is an order..a requirement. the context i used "need" in was for my personal "need"...not the roots need.. as in i "wish" the roots would go back to rappin hooks. so go ahead..drop another comeback, so all of your internet buddies can come in talkin abut LOL & LMAO. must feel good to get some props on the internet.

i kind've agree with this. the tipping point was probably album of the year for 2004, but i would rather hear another illadelph type joint. black thoughts flow has changed a little over the years...i think his flow was at his best on that illadelph album. i still be in amazement everytime i hear "no alibi"...prolly thought's illest performace(flow wise) ever. dude did rip that tipping point album though...just wish he would go back to that tip of the tongue flow every once in a while.

talk about stereotyping...

sorry, I'm not a "white boy", I'm hispanic. White boys don't learn spanish before they learn english...

and how is "white boy" an insult anyway? How is that derogatory? Does a white boy know any less about the world, hip-hop, or otherwise?

i didn't call you whiteboy in a derogatory way...i called you a whiteboy cause that's what you are. you inferred that people in the hood don't have the internet. either you were implying that the internet actually doesn't exist in the hood...or you were implying that people in the hood just can't afford the internet. and we all know you were implying the latter. then to top it off, you spelled "the" with a "D" in an attempt to even further stereotype people in the hood. so you can go ahead and call yourself "hispanic", but by your comment i can tell your nothin but a whitewashed lame.

you're still using white boy in a deregatory way.

I WAS being stereotypical (and borderline racist) with my internet and "da hood" comments in an attempt at humor. Luckily budz4zo picked up on that (unlike you, who ironically took it to heart much like the way you claim ?uesto and Roots fans do when Roots songs are criticized).

I only said it because you were posting idiotic claims and I wanted to rile you up. Mission complete. You kept throwing around "I'm in the hood" in every post as if that gives you any more credibility as far as hip-hop know-all is concerned, or as if it makes your OPINION any more valid.

P.S. Your name is Nick Cordova? Sounds like a hispanic name to me, homie... if that's the case, you're nobody to call me "white boy".

Maybe you're just resentful because you're still in "da hood" and I'm not. Maybe if you spent less money on internet, you'd be out of "da hood".

Well, you're probably stealing someone's wireless network, so nevermind.

where did you get the impression that i was riled up?...and no i don't consider myself "hispanic"...that's the term "white" people use to bunch up all people who speak spanish. i'm 100% blood mexican homie. i brought up that i'm IN the hood, cause quest was talkin about people's death warrants being signed. i just let him know that that shit means nothing to me. i face more serious problems than a bunch of rappers being mad about some internet remarks. but keep comin with them sterotypes homie...glad to what kinds of people are supportin the roots.

Wow, you're not hispanic, you're 100% mexican. Using the term "white boy" then is equally stupid as what you think is the stupid use of the word hispanic. By that logic, you should call "white people" 100% german or 100% irish, or whatever.

And for the record, my mom was born in Mexico.

PS: you are NOBODY to insult me for what kind of Roots fan I am. I do more for The Roots and Okayplayer than you, or 95% of the people who post here...

I like the chorus on Don't Feel Right. I think it works really well because of the contrast to the beat, they compliment each other. if the chorus was rapped the beat wouldn't be as noticible because it's during the sung chorus that it's accentuated the most.
