"Favorite Roots Live Shows"
Fri Jul-07-06 09:58 AM by tonywashington

The Roots, Area 1 Tour, 7-31-01
http://www.therootslive.com/archive/show_073101.html

I know most of us on here who collect live shows all ready have this show in their collection. This is one of my favorite shows. If I had to try and pin point why I like this show so much I would have to say that it seems like it was a fun show. In addition, Plus some of my favorite Roots shows are when Ben and Scratch were with the group. Ecspecially Ben. Ben is on Bass in this show.

Anyway, what is one or what are your favorite Roots live shows that you have in your collection. Also, they do not have to be on the therootslive.com website, this one just happened to be in their archives.

the 9:30 club show in DC back in December of 04 was one of my favorites. we have night 1 on the site, but night 2 was the best imo (no recording, sorry kids). RCMH (Night 2) and Kimmel Center are also up there.

washington dc 2000 which isn't on rootslive.com but can be found on the net. Great atmosphere on recording and they switch up the beats on many of their old songs.

My favorite show, hands down, was the Lincoln Center show from a few years back.

Does no one have this on mp3? I've been waiting for therootslive.com to drop it, but no luck...

i really enjoyed the save the rhinos show. but my favorite was probably that ford flash concert last year. it was just an incredible evening. very laid back. the weather was perfect. the roots did their thing, and it was over at like 9. it was alot of fun. oh yeah and it was free.

thought not, had checked usual places and no sign. Personal recording must be pretty satisfying especially as you have been to show and can relive it.

Wish I had been able to recrd there show in manchester uk in november 2004 coz that was amazing and played some different stuff from US set lists (mainly different covers).

The roots at a lyricist lounge show back in 98, around the summer I think. The show took place at the infamous and now closed Tunnel nightclub. Common was there in rare form, with his "Don't give a fuck about a Puff Daddy" freestyle. Rahzel had us all bouncing to the sounds of him beatboxing to Aaliyah's "are u that somebody." A little known emcee by the name of Eminem opened for them, while Slick Rick hosted, talking about his new album. This was months before Em and the roots dropped their resepctive albums on the same day in February of 99.

Another one I enjoyed was at the again, now closed Wetland in NYC. I got to see the Roots, Com, and Jeru freestyling, along with a long roots show for 7 bucks. This was a month b4 TFA came out, back in 99. The roots played background while several people came onstage to freestyle. Correct me someone if I am wrong, but Mr Storch was one of them.

follow me @oldirtyplaster on the Twitter thing.....i say awesome stuff

This show was similar in version to the Montreux show but the difference was that I was there standing right in the middle of the pit witnessing the show first hand. When I listen to the show now I can still can see that day in my mind. I think the best feeling was seeing the Roots grab hold of so many new fans. For a lot of people their it was their first Roots how. Being a long time fan I loved the feeling of hearing cats walking out saying "damn they killed it."

Probably the best and livest Roots show I have attended was in 99 at Bogarts in the Natti.

Unfortunately this was before I opened the doors to TheRootsLive.com cause I wish I would have recorded this show.

Anyways...the crowd chanted "Roots, Roots, Roots" loud as shit for at least 5 to 10 minutes...I mean the place was rocking. They came out and open the show to the theme to "WKRP in Cincinnati"....man the entire crowd was signing along...

They literally rock the house for almost 3 hours...left and the crowd just kept yelling "Roots, Roots"...so they came out..did and encore and left with everyone siging along to the theme to "cheers"....

I will never forget that show and the energy that was in the crowd that night. I have been to over 50 Roots shows and nothing compares to that night.

Maybe someday the show will appear from some secret vault....

i been to some shows where the roots kill it, and the crowd just is standing there.

sometimes even BT has to say shit like "what you put into it (referring to engery) is what you get out of it".

And that shit is definately true-

when the crowds are REALLY into it, the band definately kicks it up a notch.

Cody ChestnuTT opened with a few songs and jumped down into the audience to shake hands and mingle.

The Roots came out and killed it for about 1 1/2 hour. This was when Ben and Scratch were still going strong with the band. Then they took a break to let Skillz come out and rock a short set.

When the band hit the stage again, Skillz and Black Thought kicked a freestyle where they each would recite a line from an existing rap song and finish it off the top of the head.

They played for like another hour, finishing it off with Cody singing on The Seed 2.0.

All that and I think I went solo to that show. I caught a drumstick from Knuckles, who threw the thing right at me, b/c I towered over everyone else in the front.
It was the best single concert I have ever been to.

If anyone has this concert, I would be much obliged.

Yeah I was there, my first ever Roots show. And to top it off Comomon came out to De La Soul's The Bizness and took the crowd to an even greater level.

I was there too and up front. WKRP had me cracking up. The Roots on a bad night will amaze ya. The Roots on a good night will make you never want to miss a show. I can't mess with 50 but I'm around 20 shows now going back to them opening for Beck in 97. Their Hip Hop 101 at that show made me lifetime fan.

See ya, JAK

That drum solo at the end where quest had like the whole band playing on the set was incredible.

Plus double trouble with mos def (which is one of my favorite roots songs)

vernon reid is the shit, although i like capt. kirk a little more.

Game Theory- Perfection in musical form

Kimmel Center last year. OMG. It was an exerience like no other, like no other live show I had ever been too(including roots, hehe). Everything from their entrance to the brass AND string hookup to covers from Jungle Boogie, Black Betty, Ray Charles, and others to the exit when the brass band went out on the street. I was awed.

They just came out there and SMACKED the crowd in the face. I am listening to this at work today. Have not given it a full listen in a minute.
