"The Roots - Bob Dylan Tribute"

Which song are the Roots going to play at the Dylan tribute on Thursday in NYC? Any idea what the other artists are performing?

Also, I want to apologize for the poor fan participation at the UNC show on Saturday. I've never been to a Roots concert where the audience had a problem getting hyped, but it was entirely the audience's fault. They were too cool to move.

Note to other OKay artists: it's still okay to perform at UNC. I think the student body realized they'd messed up by the end of the set.

that was covered by cat power.
pretty awesome vesion i might add.
we did "masters of war".

i can't really describe the feeling....maybe it was lowered expectations or a lil doubt creeping in on some "mmmm wonder what a "rap group" is doing at a dylan tribute.

but i really feel like last night was a tipping point for us (we "white striped it" with just me and kirk and damon on the tuba from the jeff bradshaw brass band)

dare i say it was like motown 25. im not certain what the results will be but shit is not going to be the same on that set again.

we came out in all army fatigues.

and did a mars volta esque/zappa version of this protest song (lyrics are soooooo relevant for what goes on today)---incorporating in the gap band's "you dropped a BOMB on me" and hendrix's "MACHINE GUN" for added spice.

most of the renditions of the night were incredible in its silence. i wanted to go electric to sorta be the sore thumb in the acoustic at atmosphere sorta like newport 63 (ha ha).

for roots fans just imagine if there was a way to show a Riqless highlight reel of a roots performance to an older rock fan. take my drum solo, take kirk's guitar solo, add theatrics and musicianship tricks, add some cover songs, add dynamics (we went from "s----i---l--e--n---ce....to ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH!!!!!!!!! on this roller coaster version of this song)

i know for a fact that we won the respect of our peers that night (cyndi lauper just might be my new best friend---she was more hip to us than most vets....she LOVES game theory ("although the second half makes me kinda sad"----lol!), jill souble was another longtime fan----the reason im so amazed of these facts is because we are so out of the socializing loop (unless we do shows with other acts) i have no clue that mofos even know if we are alive or not. but the cats from the Allman brothers were cool as shit, Chan from Cat Power and i traded Memphis musician notes, joan osbourne (i think she was a lil miffed at me for this is the second album i said "no" to---time was of the essence and i couldn't commit) Roseanne Cash called me a lik heartbreaker (lol) and once again Sandra Bernhart can never remember the story of when we first met in 1996 (she did the scared white lady in an elevator bit at some hotel we happened to be staying in that had 80 loooooooooooong floors.---when her assistant ---who got on a few floors below---validated me then it was "oh he's safe". but the visual of a dark ass hotel hallway and then seeing this sinister monster inside changed her whole body language (face to floor, no eye contact. etc---i mean it was effed up but i "guess" i understood) even breaking the ice with a "king of comedy" compliment couldn't break the ice....i was like "damn....how many rapists can quote classic scorcese filler?

anywho....

after the performance we got the only standing ovation of the night. and ....man i cant describe it. all in the streets people waiting for cabs and walking to the parking lot all had the same story "my kids are SO jealous you performing and they are not here to see it!"---i mean like this was rippling throughout the whole audience. we made a mark last night. i can really feel that something is gonna result of this.

Yo Quest - great job last night - u guys definitely opened up some peoples eyes to what the roots are all about and the level of talent u guys possess. To be clear tho, u didnt get "the only standing ovation", but I do think you you stole the show (the only performance I enjoyed more was MMW with Oliver Wood)

Also, I thought that order of the show was a little whacky and illogical - agreed? And LOL at Cat Power doing an Eric Burdon cover and Jack Elliot doing fifty choruses on Knockin on Heavans Door......Really a strange, anti-climactic ending.............

I signed up for this board today just to come on and rave about that Masters of War last night. Insane. Beautiful. Deadly. That's what a cover song should be, you take a song and make it your own.

And there is no question that was the song of the night. MMW's take on Buckets of Rain was pretty, and Ryan Adam's Isis>Love Sick>Isis was a rocker and had the perfect Dylan Fuck You attitude. But that Masters of War was something else entirely...

I've seen hundreds of shows, and that might be the finest single cover I've ever seen live. Incredibly creative arrangement, from the Star Spangled Banner intro, to the Taps and Drop the Bomb teases, and then once Machine Gun kicked in, I think I was levitating about a foot out of my seat.

(I had to play Band of Gypsies on my ride home after that, and I forget how powerful that album is. Much praise, Buddy Miles and Billy Cox.)

?, I love Roots original music, but if you guys ever wanted to do an album of classic rock covers, I'm ready to give you my credit card for a pre-order right now. Hell, I'll pay for studio time.

(Speaking of artists on the bill last night, I always thought you guys could do an amazing, huge cover of Rock and Roll Nigger by Patti Smith.)

Anyway, not sure what the Roots policy is on live music trading, but I would kill my brother to have a copy of that Masters of War from last night. Mp3, 8 track, reel to reel, I just need to hear that again. Any help anyone can provide would be much appreciated.

Seriously ?, you should just release that on itunes tomorrow, give all the profits to an anti-war charity or last night's recipeints Music for Youth. (They did Pass the Dutchie, right?)

Keep up the good work, can't wait to see you play a full band set in NYC soon!

of the song really didn't call for mal, hub, riq, or frank.
and i knew that visually it would come off more effective
as some white stripe shit. the tuba as bass was to further
add an odd element on top of what was already an army sounding
duo.

have you met them? and have you ever gotten any feedback from Jack on the Roots? Just curious cuz I know you have pics on your myspace of stripes shows, and I read how when asked what band you'd like to sit in with it was the stripes you mentioned.... but it's a pretty well known fact that Jack despises hip hop.....

was even crazy enough to do my version of "fell" (joss) one night in sydney.
i guess i won his respect when all i could talk about was the Van Leer Rose project and how
i wished someone would trust me enough to let me man their project.
most black artists only want the "best"/"sucessful" person to do their project (which is why its KILLING me that Wil got the MJ project....not on no hating shit cause out of everyone out there i think can bring mike close)---but basically because ive never done a top 10 hit or have the attention of the audience that is needed they go for who got paid the most) so thank god al green is my rod tidwell.

perhaps the only black artists with nothing to lose are those over 50.

which is cool with me being as though they make/made the music i emulate now

I always wanted to ask you about the Stripes....

and from a fan's point of view....I bet once Pharrell's re-do and The Rev's project come out, combined with all of this positive press from the Dylan tribute, you'll be gettin alot more opportunity outside the hip-hop world...

btw, was Dylan in attendance at this thing? and did he have any say in picking you guys??

Kudos for not falling back on a choice that wasn't obvious for you (ie, Subterranean Homesick Blues or one of the Talkin' Blues pieces) or easier to adapt a straightforward arrangement of.

But Masters of War is an outstanding choice. Great lyrics, and being a folk geek I'm a sucker for the melody, which was taken from an old English traditional called Nottamun Town. And an arrangement like that, shit, man, from the sounds of it, who could ask for more?

I went to an LB show at UVA where this was happening. Phonte and Pooh are on stage tearing it up doing the Yo-Yo song.
"YO YO YOYOYOYO YO YO!"
:crowds kinda standing there looking around:

I am firmly convinced Bob Dylan is God's gift to cover songs. No one else has a catalogue like his for nice covers.

never realized how stealth it is until i saw you you mic tucked undernearth your shirt very slick. im sure the other bob dylan fans might think the same.

but i cant find this shit anywhere, so maybe there werent any tapers there. especially since bob dylan has a concert in portland the same day.

sidenote: how can you not be at your own tribute? why didnt the reviews say that? thats journaLism for you

Dylan tapers are usually on it, and they are good at going stealth..
so, of course, they weren't spotted... but that doesnt kill out hopes that a recording will appear..

(handle got the link ready before me so no link)

and ?uest changed up his drumming style a whole lot (atleast compared to roots shows)

kirk really needs to sing more, maybe it will get him to stop head bobbing like chicken head

the use of the tuba is perfect

Dylan's version is a *classic* that will live on as long as recorded music is archived. It's a classic through-out all time and space. It's the finest song ever written. Jesus cried when he heard the song. Biggie and Tupac made the truce was this song was playing. The Kids in The Hall wrote the "Always Put Salt in You Eyes" sketch while listening to it. Madonna lost her virginity while the song was playing.

It's an important song.

Lyrics:
---
Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build the big bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks

You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly

Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain

You fasten the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion
As young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud

You've thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain't worth the blood
That runs in your veins

How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
Even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do

Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul

And I hope that you die
And your death'll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand o'er your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead
