...with geffen. At least thats how I understand it. Thats why hes not doing any promo for it, cause he doesnt care about the project, he just wanted Geffen to get out of his life, so this project fulfills his contract and now hes off to bigger and better things.
Thats why none of the songs that were hyped about over the summer, only One track that he preformed a couple months ago when i last saw him is on this album, and he preformed alot of new shit.
Notice that Kanye's track isnt on there, 9th Wonder's track isnt on there,
I mean i could be wrong, but thats how I understood it, and my sources are pretty credible usually

This was his last album on Geffen so I think you may be right. This is how I see it too. This was his last major release on the label and we know how he felt about being the label. I'm just going off interviews he's had before and during the release of his last album The New Danger. The label probably also didn't care which explains the lack of promotion and other things.

the music is good, its not BOBS, thats not Mos anymore, he has alot of shit thats in the New Danger vein, but to me the message is clearer now, some songs are still kinda corny, "There Is A Way", but just like Mos said back in the day "rather be corny than ignorant"

was on BOBS, i dont expect a 32 year old to think like a 25 year old, i agree that some songs dont have the instant likability of some joints on BOBS, but to dismiss them as Mos falling off to me doesnt make sense.

Cause I dont think he has. I just know that you are wrong (and that isnt me bein arrogant, I know people who know mos and the people who work for him, and this is all comming from them). I saw him live and the joints he played that were new were FIRE! everyone in the crowd was on some "MOS IS BACK!" shit, (i did like new danger btw), but NONE of the songs he played at his show are on this album.
All im saying is that he just threw some shit together to get out of his deal. Mos refuses to do any personal promo for the album, no interviews, nothing. the CD comes in an empty artless jewel case with just the CD in it.
Mos is the shit to me, but this album is not a true mos def record. It has moments because mos is naturally talented, but nothing about this record has any passion in it. essentially it was a "fuck you" to the record lable as he broke out the door.
and as far as people saying that this sort of thing is wack to the fans, im not knockin mos, but mos has never factored his fans into his train of thought when it comes music. he does his thing and people will love him or hate him, but he could care less. im not knockin him for that but thats how he operates
but yeah, i know most people this that this is my opinion, but its much more accurate than that

anyway, surely there's more to this than just wanting to be rid of Geffen. I'm sure I've seen posts on here about him turning down offers from just about every other hip hop label since his term with Geffen expired
I was at Best Buy yesterday and they had a notice taped up on the rack where Mos's CDs were, saying something to this effect: Even though we advertised the new Mos Def CD would be for sale on Tue, the release of this album has been postponed indefinitely due to production problems

He's gotta know that this music still is heard by fans, so to me there is no excuse to come this wack on an album, especially when you are so f*cking talented. Without any knowledge of what's really going on, how are we (the fans), supposed to know that dude has label problems.
Even if I hear a legit explanation from Mos himself, out of principle as well as the ridiculously high standard of producing excellent music that Mos Def has set for himself, I'm just going to assume to he fell off.
This is hip-hop, I don't care why you made a wack album, if it's wack Mos is wack. This is not to say that he can't come back and redeem himself a la Esco after Nastradamus, but you can't disappoint your entire fan base and then say it is the labels fault. Be a professional, make quality music, maintain your fan base and don't make excuses.

I hated New Danger as much (if not more than) anybody. But True Magic is on the same level as BOBS imo. Im not going to say classic because everybody seems to hate it.

Even if he is doing this just to get out of his contract, that's a slap in the face to his fans. If the label is willing to let it go out there with no cover art, no single, no release date, then I'm sure they'd let him have a certain degree of freedom to do what he wants with it. So why not give his best?

Agreed...until I hear it from him, it's a rumor.
With that in mind, I'm still curious as to why he'd put the album out with a bare-ass CD. If he's truly unhappy with the label, and his contract is officially complete with the release of the album, I wouldn't think he would have a problem speaking his mind about the situation surrounding the release of the album (if there was one)

He was in the Bay Area about a month ago doing some promo on the radio...but with the lack luster album art..you might be right...I think he's sending mixed messages..lol...The album is dope though...it does sound a bit rushed on the mixing tip.....?

the mix is pretty bad, no artwork -> really looks like getting out of a deal as fast and cheap as possible
but then, there are songs like sun moon & stars, fake bonanza etc. that tell a different story.

maybe those traks will be on the official release because I just read that the 12/29 release of True Magic was an early one to combat downloads? (Gimme a break, when are they gonna learn?)
