"Good news for D'Angelo fans..(I guess)"

I stumbled on the blog section of SOHH.com and found some news on our man D'Angelo. Some talk about him dropping some weight, and back in NYC working hard on the album. Pretty much goes like this:

Remember D'Angelo?

I just heard from a very reliable source that D' Angelo is grinding it out on the low here in NYC. Apparently he has been losing the weight and is on a heavy training regime with my homeboy Mark Jenkins. Mark is the trainer that got him to the "Untitled (How Does It Feel)" tricked out body weight. He also trained Diddy for the marathon, Mary J. Blige for her tour.... etc etc etc.

Mark told me that D'angelo isn't doing any press, not even documenting the transformation. Dude is also in the studio grinding out a new album.

In the new Blender Magazine, it states that he's in NYC recording with Dr. Dre on as producer for his new album. It's the 2006 year in review issue if you want to check it out for yourself....

thank GOD! im so glad to hear D' is makin moves again.

And 15, have you heard all of the songs that he recorded for James River? And if so, what would you say is the general feel of the album or those songs? i know you said "dark" but who can you tell D' got his biggest influence from while recording the album? And who had D' worked with while doing this album? Are the songs on some pure Funk like Funkadelic or a mix of Funk and Rock along with a sprinkle of R&B/Soul?

I'll take speculation over your bs any time, homie. Either way, you really don't know shit about what's happening with D despite consistently trying to suggest otherwise. Original poster says he's in New York: you say you "know" (not guess; not believe) he ain't. ?uest steps in and let's us know what's up; and that - yes - D *is* in NY doing his thing, and you still calling it speculation...

Damn, next time you see a D thread - just for once - think before you post the hate. It ain't no good for your karma, you know...

I can see the anger in your typing (IT'S FUNNY)...
but have you realized that everything up until now about D'angelo hasn't come from the man himself...
therefore, if D'angelo doesn't do an interview, internet promotion, a concert or at least a comment about his new album in the works, it is safe to say that there is no album being worked on...
Questlove been hinting about this James River project for three years and still not even a single is available for y'all to listen to...
not to say that D'angelo hasn't done any new songs since Voodoo but oblivously if he is indeed on the grind right now with Dr. Dre in NYC it would be more publicized....

Not really you twat face, he's just pointing out that you always jump into D'angelo posts with some self-aggrandizing cock spurt and he personally is more than a little bored with it.

>but have you realized that everything up until now about
>D'angelo hasn't come from the man himself...

Well done, and.......?

>therefore, if D'angelo doesn't do an interview, internet
>promotion, a concert or at least a comment about his new album
>in the works, it is safe to say that there is no album being
>worked on...

Why is it safe to assume that ? Oh, because you say so ?

So, the FACT that ?uesto has dropped some info is null and void to you ?

And who are you exactly ? And just how do you KNOW the facts ? You don't do you, so stfu

>Questlove been hinting about this James River project for
>three years and still not even a single is available for y'all

Read ?uest's post again. Reading and comprehension are basics.

>not to say that D'angelo hasn't done any new songs since
>Voodoo but oblivously if he is indeed on the grind right now
>with Dr. Dre in NYC it would be more publicized....

Why would it ? Oh, because YOU haven't heard anything that means it isn't so ?

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight !

Next !

Oh, and thanks for the INFORMATION ?uestlove.

on the internet getting angry at somebody is retarded...
so I'm gonna leave like this...
each year goes by and all of us are excited to hear news about D'angelo...
there has been so much hype surrounding his third album however there is no official news about it and its 2007...
so why have your hopes up for something that may never become reality...
just enjoy his two CDs and if he comes out with another then fine, if not, big fucking deal...
and yes if a platinum selling artist is working on a highly anticipated follow up album, it would be heavily publicized (common sense for those who possess it)...
take it easy twinkle toes....

peace,

Please stay away from the dark stuff. Dr. Dre on board don't equal salvation, as i'm feeling 50/50 about that, considering the Bilal material he helped churned out. (I'm not a fan of Bilal at all)

I hope the Poyser, Palladino & 15 trio, is kept far away from this project. That whole Soulquarian (which is a spinoff of astology = worship of the demons)sound ain't hitting. It's very tiresome, no disrespect.

I hope the good doctor will have enough sense to program his drums and let Elizondo groove around them programmed drum patterns, as that dude is a genuis, like Dre!

I would like to hear something new and unexpected from D'angelo...
that dark stuff isn't necessary in today's times; with war and death happening everyday in the news who needs to have that feeling when listening to music...
hopefully Dr. Dre and some other songwriters/producers will due this album justice....

On The Lookout 4:
some new music. WTF is going on this year?

agreed to a certain extent...BUT i don't believe all lot of his stuff was dark (give some examples). I think Voodoo was very very good material. What i think people loved about D'Angelo was that he did alot of the stuff himself. He doesn't need a team of producers and a team of song-writers to help him express himself...

I'm not saying that Posyer, Palladino & 15 aren't genuis's in their own right. Their credibilities don't need proving as the Roots are the next hardest working in the business, next to JB.

Imho, D'angelo lays down (in a way other than himself) when 15 is on the horizon, as does Erykah & Common. 15, imho seems to turn into the musical director on peoples project. That's wonderful if you a Roots fan, i'm not, never been one.

15's peoples, tend to be yes men (Christian Mcbride, Poyser, Pallidno) as those cats seemed coached, in believing that everything 15 drums on is hot, when in reality a lot of people would differ.

15 should let D'angelo find his own way, as evidenced by Brown Sugar not needing any 15 influence, no disrespect, just my observations.

D'angelo can do him, i'm just saying. Besides, other than Lil Ghetto Boy (another one of Dre's materstrokes, does he even use live drummers?) Dre is a big Parliament/Funkadelic head, from what i can make out from him, so if it don't move, it don't move.

That's all i'm gonna say.

If they on tour, they'll get replacements for they slots. If D in the studio, trust, they gonna be sniffing around with they hands out. I don't know how preceptive Dre is but i hope he knows how slick cats will get. Maybe Dre in this stage of his illustrious prduction career, don't have much left in the tank? Was 'Imagine' a hot track? Maybe Dre will let those hanger ons come in and run roughshod over this project. I know the Good Doctor that cut The Chronic would never let nothing go down like that.

To me, it reads that 15 just wants to get $$$ of those scrapped tracks that him and D cut. That's his stakes in it. Realistically, it seems that D'angelo ain't even in that miserable space anymore, when those were cut. Besides, that Joe Texan, Funky Drummer and them others, sound like some serious 8th grade talent show bush.

To my young ears, Funk & R&B ain't 15's forte. Hip Hop drumming is. Not soul & R&B. When 15 drums on a track, his influence is so felt that i can't hear the artist. Mama's Gun, i never listen to, Voodoo, please, i can't name you 3 songs off of it.

That's a good thing right! he's got some cats around him that believe in his music and the place he wants to take it!

I don't know how preceptive Dre is but i hope
>he knows how slick cats will get. Maybe Dre in this stage of

>tank? Was 'Imagine' a hot track?

Are we talking beat wise or d' vocal wise? cuz i am NOT feeling d's vocals on that track, the beat except for the corny string part is ok, but i think Dilla made beats like that 7 years ago and to hear the same damn piano on at least 2 "kingdome come" tracks makes me think that Dre just discovered "the piano" and made a whole bunch of tracks with it!

Maybe Dre will let those
>hanger ons come in and run roughshod over this project. I know

HOPE SO!

So you think this is a $$$ issue that still goes back to them Voodoo days? 15 needs to run to the Lady...get them 800 2" reels out of storage and import them into protools and share the whole thing with OKP...he can make some serious $$$ off of that ish!

>To my young ears, Funk & R&B ain't 15's forte. Hip Hop

You lost me with this comment??? I think people dig 15's input he has on projects he's involved in. and the albums you mentioned did all become classics in their own right! Pharrell and AL seem to like his style and that's MJ soul and oldskool soul! OK so he might not have the funk down? he can learn from the yoda's!

Or take cheap shots at The Soulquarians and what their out to accomplish. I'm not into trying to go back and highlight what anyone refutes, cuz it all opinion anyways, just like peoples opinions on a cars performance, or a game they see on tv. Besides, those guys can do whatever they want to do and i'm sure they will.

I tried to convey that the Soulquarian mentality would have one to believe that Black music in general, rests squarely on D'angelo's shoulders. That music just cannot go on without D'angelo which is the furthest from the truth. (Record store closings and all, it's carrying on right along, by the looks of it) Imo though, they bring that baggage into the studio with them and it seems to come at D'angelo's expense. It becomes a burden to even create under those conditions. I think partly, that's where you get the stories of D'angelo not showing up for sessions, or showing up high. He can play those games with the Soulquarians all day but notice how quickly Dre sent D that Imagine track and D jumped to it which is what you won't get from the Soulquarian production. I seriously doubt that D'angelo even enjoys playing with those guys. I mean, they turn around and give out the same tired & predictable neo soul tracks to Joss Stone, Amy Whitenhousenbaumer, Northern Soul, etc.

Also, the 15 & D'angelo together tracks always seem to bring a lot of D'angelo's weaknesses to the fore. (complaints of mumbling, no melody, no groove) It makes him sound under produced and a real drag to listen to. It's almost like looking at someone physically unattractive and trying to figure out what it is that you think makes them that way. Maybe it's their complextion, maybe it's their features, maybe you get the sense that they have a nasty disposition.

Lastly, with Dre, it's eqaully his reputation on the line as well, as both are working against the stigma that music has past them by. This ain't the 1989-92 Dre & this ain't the 1995 D'angelo. Em don't even take a whole lot from Dre anymore, does he? 50 cent to me, has run his course. Game doing fine without them all, it seems. Dre & Marsha from Floetry i would've perferred to see before Dre & D'angelo (as Marsha ain't gonna miss) but i'll take what i can get.

You certainly have the right to do so...I think the problem is people not wanting to think about how D' would sound without the involvement of the "soulquarians" cuz they liked what they heard on Voodoo and think that this is the way to go...I mean I'd like to hear a continuation of this group, cuz that's the sound that a prefer, but I also know that it is also the evolution of the artist...so in any way he chooses with whom he does his music, people should support the artist.
Though I'd still like to hear all those jams from them voodoo days!!!

how things will unfold. (if they do at all) One thing i'm almost certain of though is that Dre hasn't come to the east coast to play around. He's too astute of a business man for kiddie games, no shows and excuses. None of that BKlye behind the scenes footage of the recording process, or exclusive okayplayer clips and photos, no grand and eloboarate stories to read about with such and such dropping by the studio, thank God. I seriously doubt that Dr. Dre got time for gimmicks like that, he about business. Just with the name Dr. Dre in the studio with you, let alone on your project, commands that D'angelo has to bring his A game. It'll be intresting, as you have the mastermind beatmaker/producer paired up with an allegedly once good musician, so we'll see.

When Elizondo and Dre pair, it's usually golden. I have the January 2005 issue of Bassplayer magazine that interviewed ELizondo. One of the questions put to him was this: How do you come up with youe basslines with Dr. Dre?

'I draw a combination of the music i've listened to and the music i've played. I listen to Dre's drum beat, and it's almost like there's a bass line there- I can hear it in my head. I try to be lyrical, hooky, and have a great tone, all at the same time. The bass line has to be something you won't get tired of hearing for four minutes, and it needs to be as infectious as the drum beat. I've picked up a lot from Dre in learning how to create a bass part: where notes are placed, how long to hold a note, and what type of tone to get from the bass to match or contrast the kick and bring the whole 'kit' out. He opened my eyes to those kinds of concepts. Where the note stops makes a huge difference in what the groove feels like....'

Although I do agree, but it's what D says. In an interview D talked about Voodoo and that on this record he tried to do better than what he did on Brown Sugar....So I hope the man does stay true to his word, and continues to seek to inspire and just do better than Voodoo. In the linear he wrote that he could have kept the same formula he did for Brown Sugar and ran with that, but its all about breaking out and doing better than what you did. So whatever it takes for us to fall in love with the new material like we all fell for voodoo. I just hope its still about the music....

>In the linear he wrote that

'brown sugar' is a solid album, good songs with strong melodies. therefor i can't see how it would've been easy for him to create 'brown sugar 2'. yes, he might've been able to make another album that SOUNDS like 'brown sugar', but surely it can't be easy to create another batch of those SONGS.

maybe that's why we got 'voodoo'. folks expected him to keep it real. and didn't he say he had the worst case of writers block after 'brown sugar'? perhaps a reason to go in a different direction and focus more on sound instead of songs and grooves instead of melodies. 'voodoo' turned out good though. even better if it had gotten a quick followup record.

however i do hope a next record will focus more on songs/music. i guess he's had plenty of time to establish a unique sound. we'll see. but whatever he puts out, i'll be thrilled to hear it..

compare the use of metaphor on the title track of 'brown sugar' to 'the root' (i dug the 'you took my sword and shield' line as a metaphor for vulnerability, among others, whereas 'brown sugar' was metaphor of the 'wink/nudge, this is a weed song' variety). i dunno. maybe it's just me, but i felt he stepped his writing game up a notch on 'voodoo'. what song on 'brown sugar' is as well written as 'africa'? if there was writer's block, it's probably b/c he was trying to TOP the writing on BS.

I mean...I FEEL where your coming from, I like the whole soulquarian movement to!! It made me the musician I am right now, but it would be stupid to ONLY listen to that stuff for the rest of my/your life! They'll always be my fav albums but hey there's to much dope music out there! Same goes for the people making the music! Give me ONE artist that did EXACTLY the same music every record he ever made?

Dre is MOS DEF one of the better beatmakers around...
We lost the best one!...
So now someone has to step up!
IF i'm reading all of this right?, I'm actually pretty excited with the new progressions...we'll have to see and hear how it works out but Dre IS responsible for a couple of classic beats! Cuz I don't know but, ever seen a crowd that "DIDN'T" go wild on "g thang"? that's a dope beat with a killer bassline! Add up that Dre works with Elizondo...I mean...that record could be fire if you ask me!

It's better to support D' than to "make belief" our way on these boards saying who he "can or can't" work with...you think he cares what the fuck we "THINK" he should work with?...

But these are just my thoughts about the subject...

Now about those old Voodoo jams...lol

this was not a comment about Dre being "revolutionary"! it was only to point out that Dre did some dope songs in his career...nothing more!

Why no Dr. Dre involvement?

Help us to understand what you see that we can't, please.

I can see Dre wrapping that recording session up around March. Having the material mixed and on the shelf in the stores by June. What's so wrong about that?

i'm hoping hiphop won't play that big a role on a next record as it did on 'voodoo'. it's a good album, but i'm hoping the emphasis for a next record will be on songs and melodies instead of sound and grooves. and i guess that's not where dre's talents lie. if that means the album will take longer to record, fine by me.

also, i'm no fan of snoop's 'imagine'.

I trust a Dre & D'angelo joint effort. What & who D'angelo is, ain't gonna change.

D'angelo needs someone to almost literally kick start him back into gear and shift him out of neutral, as he doesn't know how. Dre's experience, work ethic, tutaledge and direction along the way, might possibly come to be very invaluable to D'angelo, for subsequent records to follow, if nothing else.

After Dre left Death Row (I was working at the Post Office as a letter Carrier at the time) i clearly remember looking at Dre on the cover of Vibe Magazine and skimming the article saying that him & Suge parted ways and Dre basically was left with nada. It was something about his photo that gave me a feeling he would make Suge regret humiliating him.

It's wasn't only hip hop and the music industry but the whole world watched what Dre would do next. I mean, he had nothing. NOTHING. Somebody else might've Kurt Cobained it, too much anxiety but Dre focused & dropped that Been Then, Done That. A few years later Em came along...

We all thrive off the comeback kid stories, the insurmountable odds stories, the David & Goliath stories, because sadly, most aren't triumphant. (exceptions the Princes, R kelly's, Santanas,) Very few can keep up with the changing musical landscapes through the decades and stay current.

I'm more optomistic, as i see Dre & D'angelo almost like a Quicny Jones & Micheal Jackson.

But let's not forget that it's not because D is lazy...The dude is perfectionist. That's why Voodoo took so long to make, and that's why it's a FIVE STAR album. I'm just saying though, whatever it takes to make a banging record, let oh boy do his thing. He has forseen his own projects in the past, so let him continue. And Dre's involvement, though it sounds huge, I think will be minimal as was Jay Dee's as far as putting music on the record.

Whatever caused him to delay in the past, is the past. New year. Clean slate. The score is 0 to 0.

Honestly, i thought that D'angelo would've 'offed' himself when he was going through it. He just seems like the type that would want posthumous status and by all means, go about it, by cheating himself into the history books, lol, no offense man. *slaps knee*

Dre's input can certainly mean many things, it's too broad to try and science it down, or box those guys in, as to the possiblities.

One thing though that you will not get from Dre which is the baby-fying of D'angelo like his boy 15. D'angelo went from being the regular old Eugene Archer that i see at the stoplight and kick it with for 10-15 minutes (holding up traffic like a mug) to blossoming into this delicate little flower that only 15 & Tinyteanie can speak to. ALL QUESTONS MUST BE DIRECTED TO 15 FIRST & IF HE DEEMS YOU FIT MAYBE YOU CAN GET TO THE BOSS.

so people who think BS is the way to go and you've got the voodoo lovers! since you seem to be the only one who has the slightest idea of what he is doing...is there a chance you can give us some insight into what way he's going with his music?
After your JR post I started this whole journey through my dad's record collection with all them english bands and these beach bums that...well...what the hell I am listening to? lol just kidding cuz I like "smile" in it's "artistic" context..."fire helmets anyone?"
allthough I digd "bullshit"...is this still his current mind cuz the press is gonna have a ball with that ish! was this the basic feel of JR?
we'll see what happens right!?

I'm talking bout D'angelo losing touch with reality, and all things in between.

I never met the dude, my illustration was hyperbole, btw, but i got the feeling that 15 had D'angelo gassed up thinking he was Ringo Starr, John Lennonn, Geroge Harrison, Paul Mccartney, Hendrix all wrapped up into one.

We all get humbled to the proper degree, at times, as The Almighty Father in Heaven knows how to get all of our attentions.

This is all just my opinion from looking on the outside 'in'. Take what i say with a grain of salt. I'm more than likely 100% dead wrong, as usual!

Remember Will Smith's son joke about the drowning man.

The joke went (watch me butcher it) that a man was drowning and a ship in the ocean approached to rescue him but instead of taking it's help the drowning man waved it off saying that he didn't want need it, but that God was going to save him.

Then, a 2nd ship approached to rescue him and he waved it off to saying that 'God was gonna save him'.

The man eventually drowned and when he allegedly got into heaven he asked God why didn't he save him. God responded that the two ships he sent him were his help.

That's reminds me of D'angelo with Jermaine Dupri, D'angelo with Dr. Dre.

dre hasn't even produced another artist's an entire record front to back since doggystyle and he's only done it a few times in his life (DOC, Michel'le, NWA, and Eazy), yet you're going to compare him to Quincy Jones, a producer whose career spans decades and across musical genres? Really? To be honest, I'd rather hear what Quincy Jones and D'Angelo could come up with rather than D and Dre. What great R&B record has Dre EVER produced? Come on now.

^most sensible thing i've read all night.

suggesting that jermaine dupri and dre are d'angelo's last chances at salvation is a little absurd. furthermore--and i'm tryin to bite my tongue--i can't quite figure out how you can casually wave off voodoo as a musical meandering that showcases D's "weaknesses" through a fault of quest's overwhelming presence on the record... or what-the-hell-ever it was you said.

listen to "the root", really listen and live inside it for a handful of minutes, and if it doesn't move you, there ain't shit inside to move.

so as of now, since D' has stated that he wants to start fresh
and thinks the last 16 joints that would have been on the
James River album bit are "Evil and Tainted" and too dark to go to which direction does he plan on going with his music now?

Does this now mean that he is now not putting out ANYTHING he has worked on for this James River album? Is he just doing away with the whole album and now just starting a brand new album, all over? And if so, who does he plan on working with and what direction is he taking now?

Are some of his influences still (for now, this new untitled album) some of what you had told us a while back that he had for James River. "( Maggot Brain, America Eats Its Young, Cosmic Slop, Standing on the Verge of Getting It On, Let's Take it to the Stage, Tales of Kidd Funkadelic, There's a Riot Going On, On the Corner, Inspiration Information, Smile, Abbey Road, Revolver, Electric Ladyland, Nevermind the Bullocks Here's the Sex Pistols, Dirty Mind, Ego and Emergency!)"?

...to put out BOTH of them...the Dark stuff AND the Light stuff...they are both the truth.

JUST the light withOUT the dark will leave something to be desired...it will be a half empty expression...it won't tell the WHOLE honest story. And you know (and I assume he still knows) that HONESTY in the music is the KEY to the classic shit. Honesty in the music is what makes it resonate and get INto the listener and STAY there. Yeah, honesty aint always pretty, sometimes it's gritty, sometimes it's ugly...but sometimes you NEED that 'gritty ugliness' to appreciate and fully understand the journey to the 'pretty and sweet' stuff...and thats just the way it is if you want to make some REAL shit and don't want to contribute to the abundance of soulless stuff that's out there wasting the airwaves and lowering the expectations of a zilion mindless listeners...

so ask him...CONVINCE him to put em BOTH out...convince him to be honest with the true music fans and share with them WHOLE unfiltered musical journey he's been going through since Voodoo...the grit, the grime, the shimmy, the shine...its ALL part of the story...

anything less would be selling out...
