"I don't make music for the fans... Lemme explain...."

I don't make music for the fans. I never have, and god willing I never will. Do I have your attention? Are you offended? Do you understand? Lemme explain....

The true music fan respects the artist who is honest with him or herself. The art is the expression..if I'm only expressing things that are of value to you, than I'm not being a true artist. Once I start to do it for the sake of the fans, then I will really fall off and become irrelevant. I will become transparent..instead of the complaint being, "it doesn't sound like black star", it will be, "he hasn't grown since black star." The honest artist will grow and challenge his audience to follow where he is going, and not the other way around. People who love Be shitted on Electric Circus, but they fail to realize Common had to make Electric Circus to get to Be. It is a process that is easy to criticize if you've never had to do it. It's not like Electric was for him and Be was for the audience. They were both made for him. Think about this before you say I'm supposed to make music for the fans. Uhh, no, I'm not. You hear artist who make music for the fans all the time in the media. If someone asks them, why do you only talk about sex violence drugs and jewelry, their stock reply is "I'm making music for the fans, I'm giving people what they want." You look at some of their sales and think, hey maybe they're right. Then you come to your senses and be like fuck that! I'm not that dude. I make music for me, and so do my favorite artists.

I'm strictly talking about the process of creating music in the studio though. Once you put a barcode and a price tag on it, it no longer just belongs to you, it belongs to everybody. Like Cee Lo said, we are selling soul. In every song put out for consumption is a piece of my soul. It is intensely personal, that's why I only make music and get on stage with people I'm cool with. Anything else would be unnatural and not correct. On stage, I strictly belong to the people. In videos, I am trynta to get the people to spend money on the album. However, I cannot let these realities corrupt the creative process. The reason why my shows stay packed is because I work hard to keep it honest. This is not what I believe, it is knowledge I've gotten from doing it so long. You know what else is interesting? The same fan who shits on an artist for doing an ad or a song they feel like is just for the money is the first one to say you should respect me because I bought your album. This is why you can't make music for anyone but yourself..Phonte from Little Brother talks about this excellently in one of his blogs.

THIS NEXT SECTION I SHOULD WRITE IN CAPS, BECAUSE APPARENTLY SOME OF YOU SKIP THE POINT OF MY BLOGS AND GO RIGHT FOR THE SENSATIONAL BITS. Just playin, but seriously, I wrote some things about Okay Player last week that some of you took exception to.. I'd like to address some of it.

1. KWELI ONLY MENTIONS OKP WHEN HE'S DISSING. Not true. Instead of wishing for the new reflection album and being lost in your internet bubble, get out and buy right about now, where I shout out spit kicker AND Okay player. In countless freestyles at shows i have shouted out the okayplayers in the audience. I give away music here and participate in every okp event I'm asked to be in. In countless interviews, I mention how the okp community supports me with or without a record, and give it out as my official website. Throughout my career, okp has been a great help to me, AND vice versa. On Kanye's album I made a joke about the hating that goes on the boards sometime, but it did not come out of the blue. In his verse, Kanye jokes about meeting girls on the internet, thru black planet. Anybody who follows me knows I'm not computer saavy at all. I didn't know what black planet was, so I said something funny about okp. They said I was sensitive, but jeesh, the way some of these kids acted over that was like I killed they grandma. My rhyme was in the context of the song. Also, to really break it down, the term okay player hater was referencing my own song with black star, hater players..I referenced myself as sort of an inside joke, but the purists ain't get it..they just heard hater and took offense.

2. KWELI THINKS OKAY PLAYERS SHOULD ONLY SAY NICE THINGS ABOUT THE ARTISTS. Not true. I relish constructive criticism. I love all of my albums, and there are things I wish could be better about each of them. I've heard great criticism, I've heard hate described as criticism. If I don't wanna be criticized, I shouldn't release music for sale. In my last blog, I did not address the hate of my work except to say, yall can miss me with that. Trust, I'm good. While you stay in your own little world in front of your computer screen, I am traveling the world, loving life. I love the music I'm making right now, and I'm very proud of it. Maybe you don't like it, but maybe you are not the type of person I would hang out with either. You probably assumed you were, but that had nothing to do with me. I'm just trynta be honest with my craft. Love it or hate it, I don't care, but you are gonna respect it. NOW HERE'S THE IMPORTANT PART. THE POST I ADDRESSED ON OKP SAID THE M1 ALBUM WAS TERRIBLE, AND WHY SHOULD OKP SUPPORT THIS GARBAGE. Well, here's why. When okp was started by dan, shawn, ahmir and the good folks in philly, the intention was to create a digital community to bring awareness to artists who are passionate and positive, but don't recieve much light from the mainstream. The first okp tour lasted over 2 months and featured the Roots, Big Daddy Kane, Guru, Dice, Slum Village, Bahamadia, Phat Kat, Jaguar, the Jazzyfatnastees, myself and Dead Prez. Every night, the illest moment of the show was when M1 and sticman came back to do an encore(which means, they had ALREADY smashed it) of Hip Hop, which became the theme song for the tour, much like it is in Block Party. This was in 2000, so while a lot of you were popping pimples in junior high, M1 was grinding on a tour that raised awareness for this beautiful thing we have now where some asshole could post that M1 doesn't deserve some love here. Fuck you, you don't deserve to post, you're a tourist. You don't know how this was started, you're just visiting. To start a post by saying an album is terrible, not offer anything constructive, and question why he is down without taking his history into account is a slap in the face to the whole community. All the artists, from the Roots to D'Angelo to Common to Jag built this community, alongside our fans who support and come to the shows. Everyone feels free to comment on why I should be better at taking critcism, but to say that M1 does not belong is a judgement. There is no police at okp so we must take care of our own.

The fans who love this site should not encourage rampant ignorance and hate in the guise of constructive criticism. This is why I responded. M is my brother, and you know what, the other artist should respond too, or at least Dan and Shawn. Thats not a diss, but they probably see that bullshit all the time and get sick of responding....

3. THE ONLY TIME THE FANS HEAR FROM KWELI IS WHEN HE IS WHINING.
Funny, but not true. I don't think standing up to challenge what I feel is unacceptable disrespect to my comrade is whining or bitching. If you think it is, tell me when you see me. And you will see me, because I don't hide. I do 200 shows a year, not including speaking engagements. I walk the streets, I'm very accesible. Sometimes I don't realize the power of my words though. I write from the heart, just like a fan, because that's what I am. But because I've been on TV once or twice, my words seems to hit harder. Everything I say is dissected and looked at under a microscope by the purists, and that can be uncomfortable sometimes. Maybe I'm too passsionate, maybe I care too much.. Tarik would probably think I was crazy for writing this, like why are you wasting your time on someone who obviously don't get it. I believed that this was a community for us, by us, but it does not seem to be, when someone could post something like that.

Everyone has the right to an opinion, including me, but dudes post was not acceptable..anyone who thinks it is should be ashamed of themselves, and does not deserve to be down with okp, sorry, take that bullshit elsewhere. It might be true that I have not focused enough on the positive things people do over there. Even though I said in the blog from last week that I cannot hold most of okp responsible for a few bad comments, y'all seemed to ignore it. Maybe I should make a rhyme about the fans who really support me (oh wait, I do that all the time). I feel like I support with every piece of myself I have. As far as not saying I haven't been relevant since reflection, stick your head back in the sand. My career gets better every year. I started a label with Jean Grae and Strong Arm Steady, Blacksmith Music, distributed by Warner, and we will define the vanguard of underground coast to coast.. My most recent albums and mixtapes got everyone from David Banner to Wordsworth to Rakim to Doom to Papoose. No artists on this site puts out more music than me, thru a label or myself or otherwise. I'm definetly not making the music I used to, and I'm not going to, because the nature of the artist is to grow. If you want me to sound like I'm 20 and just signed to Rawkus, don't hold your breath. You don't have to buy the new shit, someone will. Just respect what I've done for the community you cherish so much. Respect M1, even if you don't like the album, that's all I'm saying..If I don't have the right to say that, then I shouldn't be down, y'all are right...

PS..the funniest shit is the cartoons of the angry kweli..i gotta watch what i say, y'all be missing the point..trust, I'm living and enjoying my life..say what you want about me, it does roll off...I had to defend Mtulu, tho, he's new as a featured artist. I been thru the bullshit before..That's all I'm gonna say, and now I'm so cool. Enjoy your message boards..I've let this distract me too much, back to the fly shit...

135. "The irony of our complaints about Talib Kweli's whining..."
In response to Reply # 7

is we're whining about his criticism over our posts. The boards said "Make better music"; dude said "Write better posts."

Kweli, i'm probably in the minority, but i've come to accept your music for what it is. What i cannot accept, however, are your claims that you make music for yourself. When you make such disingenous statements in your posts you insult my intelligence and your own. This ain't training for the NYC marathon, cousin. Every ARTIST desires to create something beautiful and then share it with the world. After you put the finishing touches on an album but before it hits the shelves, you're hoping your work will be appreciated by the masses. To deny that you make music for BOTH yourself AND your fans and then claim "I make music for me" is patently absurd. My advice is to holla at Pos and see what he has to say about the cooling off process.

As fans, we have to come to grips with the fact there will probably NEVER be another "Train of Thought." (Yeah, i said it.) Call it "the Little Brother effect." I realized it after "The Minstrel Show" dropped. Not in any way knocking LB's musical growth or saying TMS wasn't an entertaining, poignant, and highly relevant album, but "The Listening" was a perfect storm. Back then pop/gangsta rap was rampant, Kanye hadn't yet *saved* hip-hop (jokes, people), and three talented dudes built on 20-plus years of love, frustration, and life experiences to give us a classic.

For one, we have to realize is Kweli is not "that dude" any more. I don't think anybody (though i might be wrong) has the same hunger level after reaching a life-long dream. I guarantee the day after the revolution is televised, over 90% of the people involved are gonna be watching it on CNN instead of continuing to fight. Those of us who gave praise reports in church after we got off the unemployment line but were tired of our job months/years later are now barking at Kweli for not bringing it like we want. Whatever, just make sure you're putting everything into your TPS reports like you used to.

Another reason we'll never see another "The Listening" or "Train of Thought" is b/c LB (like Kweli) puts out so much music. And taking both "Chittlin' Circuits," "Connected," "Sleepers," and TMS, we probably have 2 superb albums, maybe 1 classic. But even then it's a crap-shoot. That hypothetical classic still may not match the cohesion and clarity of theme that TL had. The same theory goes for Kweli.

Bottom line is dude gave us two albums universally hailed as classics. It seems artists will either continue to improve in the eyes of their fans, or they'll go the way of ATCQ. I understand the frustration as a consumer when one of your favorite artists appears to be slacking, but if dude says that he's giving his all and he's comfortable with the music he's making, then it is what it is.

I'm trying to think outside the box like Henry Brown.

In response to Reply # 135

My brother, I feel that you may have misunderstood Kweli. Naturally, when an artist makes their album, it is going to be marketed (whether poorly or well) and the fans will be able to hear the music, criticize, assail, praise it, give accolades, etc. However, when an artist such as Kweli is in the studio, he makes the music for himself. As he has said earlier, he makes the music from his soul; the fans have nothing to do with it. I agree with Kweli, if artist made their music strictly for the fans, that would impede the growth of the artist. I attend the University of Virginia and I am a literature major and philosophy minor. I am going to be honest, when I write the enormous amount of papers that I am told to write, I write them for myself for I can only speak about what is true in my heart (also adding empirical evidence, facts, quotes, etc). However, once my respective papers leave my hand, it belongs to the professor, faculty, and administrators. Nevertheless, I still write what is true to my heart. We can not conform to the wants and needs of society for it takes away our individualism. Kweli has produced quality albums (some better than others) but I feel there is a bias in the music industry in terms of the fans. Most times (BUT NOT ALL) fans like the first album that an artist release after they have grown. Examples would be Jay-Z, Kweli, Mos Def (maybe), Biggie, and Nas with Nas probably being the prime example (however, I tend to favor Life after Death) and the list goes on. Now, ofcourse this point can be argued; however, from the people that I have spoken with through my conversations about hip hop, that is the consensus. I will mention again, there are exceptions, but just because they are not living in nostalgia does not mean that we should cancel them out of our minds. We must be able to look at the aesthetic creation for what it is my brother, God bless and POWER TO THE PEOPLE!!!

I don't know about anybody else but even in 8th grade, using "good" to descibe something would have gotten that nice red mark. It's too relative.

Just because I don't like something, does it make that thing "bad"?
What if I like it but you don't? Is it that I like the "bad" thing or is it you don't like the "good" thing?

Sorry to have to take it back to 5th grade english, but it seems to be needed. Which brings me to another lesson. Remember those 5Ws? Well, some of you have the "Who" down, a few of you have the "What", but "Why" is missing in a lot of the opinions in this post.

Without giving reasonable arguements for your opinion, your posts just look petty, spiteful, and childish.

^^^^^ This this doesn't just apply to sunchild, but to everyone else who falls in this category.

Talib Kweli is a human being. humans are variable. they do what they want or what they have to. don't get all caught up in your image of him, just as he said about seeing M1 as a person, not an image. if you respected him once, don't lose that just because of changes he's making in his music. We all gotta respect each other, and if you don't like what you're hearing out there, make your own music and get down to it.

The Roots understand that in the public eye they're only as good as the audience perceives their live show to be

your main means of getting it is making albums - you're only as good as the public perceives your last work to be

anyone who loved your work from day 1 up to today is considered a part of the public, understandably you cant please them all

De La put out "The Grind Date" and didnt move many units, but it stands as quite a respectable album. Would you rather brick with an album that was received well or let albums sold dictate how good your product was?

you carved the "real authentic" niche, making a drastic departure from that wont go over well.

before i get to him, i'll compare 2 of his partners in crime

Dave Chappelle: 50 million dollars wasnt enough for him to go against what was in his heart

Mos Def: did movies and hosted def poetry jam to get money, when it came time for his sophomore release he went left but he didnt water himself down

Talib Kweli: his attitude is like Cartman on South Park 'WHAT-EVA, I do what I want!'

To my knowledge Nas is the only one that can wear 7 different type of rapper hats and make you at least curious to see what his next album will sound like

then what is..just cause its not as dramatic as fucking over a lot of money or doing a different type of album...btw the only reason why Mos's album was "left" is because after the MCA was gone the Black Jack Johnson album wasnt gonna come out first and AT ALL.....and thats the only reason he so called went left...

talib kweli's progression is a lot different from Common. Common has remained consistently "good". even with EC. it was different, but i respected it.

talib has just been in a slump. maybe the distractions of record label changing and mos/hi tek leaving has made it hard from him to find his angle.

his experimentation and "finding himself" has made a lot of people turn their backs on him.

kind of like nas, but not quite.

:c(

he'll be back. i love me some kweli.

maybe u dont like his current music but i (and a lot of others) do. he gonna put out what he wants to. maybe beautiful struggle wasnt as good as train of thought but i still thought it was a good album. way better than 80% of the so-called hip-hop nowadays anyway. id prefer beautiful struggle over a twista album any day. if u dont like his music, dont buy it. theres no reason to call him a piece of shit though and tell him to change his ways. like he said, u dont have to like his album but others will. i enjoy kweli's music and will continue to do so. fuck the haters, keep making good music

Y'all bitches get you panties in a twist if anyone ever mentions okayplayer and hating in the same sentence.

It's ridiculous how serious some of you guys take this shit. Like you can't just listen to an opinion without having to fire back with your own two cents.

So if you don't like something, don't like it. Why you waste so much time and energy bitching about how it's "terrible" or "hot garbage" is beyond me.

This forum is going to hell though. It's all this hating on this or Kweli can't take the criticism. Shit it's you guys that can't take any fuckin' criticsm. Takin' all this shit so personal.

It's no wonder artists are getting turned off by these forums because you discuss and disect shit like some third graders on the playground.

And y'all can come back and get at me with all the hate, venom and log off's you got and ya know what? I ain't even gonna sweat it or give y'all a second thought after I log off. I've thrown my two cents in and that's that for what it's worth.

But a lot of y'all just sit here and obsess and only say some shit because your anonymous and sitting behind a screen in the comfort of home. Y'all know if you ran into Kweli in the street half of ya would be scared to approach him and the other half that did would have nothing but nice things to say.

Yeah everyone's entitled to their opinions, you, Kweli, me, but shit's just getting out of hand.

It's just music, okay player.....

But most people don't even spend any money cos they don't buy the album. People say Kweli is whiney, but I reckon alot of the people on here are whiney. Kweli doesn't owe us shit, but alot of people act here like he wouldn't be shit without us. Yeah I don't think his recent albums come close to his Rawkus days, but that's it. I think his older music was better, but he hasn't swore at my mother, he hasn't said something dirty about my sister, he hasn't disrespected me, what reason do I have to disrespect him or hate on him for him not making the music I want to hear. Yeah I think it is fair to say something like Beautiful Struggle, Right About Now, and Quality can't fuck with Reflection Eternal or Blackstar for the following reasons and I wish Kweli would consider these reasons while making his next album. Or if you hate his music that much, and despise him so much, then why waste your time posting about him. I just don't see why so many people have such a personal vendetta against him and other artists.Get over it.

i think a lot of ppl don't understand what goes into creating an album. the writing, recording, listening, editing, printing, promoting, calling, etc etc etc.

since a lot of the world is so disposable now ppl just think an album is finished in a week or something to that extent.

i am a true independent. i've completed 1 album and am working on a collaborative project and another aside of that. no label, no funding, this comes out of my own pocket from hours upon hours of overtime @ the 9to5. i was on tour. i was on a couple tours. i had to drive my own 94 accord with 5 other cats etc etc. no money, sleeping in the whip and scouring for telly cash etc etc. just to get ppl to "try" to listen.

its very hard. so before i criticize an album i "listen"...and let me stop quickly to explain listening.

1) buy the album 2) take it home 3) play the CD from beginning to end without any skipping while 4) reading the liner notes.

and i do this to see how the album was conceived and what went into birthing this music. ppl don't do that anymore. for example i met a couple chicks that bought the "jamrock" joint a while back. they unwrapped it, put it in and as the songs played they skipped thru the tracks b4 each song even got to like 10seconds elapsed time. and i think a lot of consumers do that & then from that haphazard listening party that they give themselves say that an album is platinum or copper.

so i think that the argument or displeasure is from ppl that pass judgement on an album that hasnt even really been given a chance whatsoever before the judgement.

Kweli...man all we want is good music. I know I'm a broken record here, but it can't be said enough. Posts like this, will only feed the Kweli hate brigade. Most of us hear what you sayin and appreciate your candor. But you gotta watch your tone yo...cuz there are some who will feel condescension emanating from this. And that's the LAST thing you wanna portray; arrogance. Opinions will abound when people are spending money on albums. And alot of cats buying this music ain't caked up to begin with. So for their money, they want quality. No pun intended. Yes you have to write for yourself. But you share it with the world for that exact reason. To share. To share your thoughts, fears, love, hate, and life expereiences with people who are going thru the same thing. When I listen to Be, I'm on a soul trip. Common is from Chicago, but I'm from Baltimore. Two different cities. But we have the exact same issues in the community. So although he's writing from his perspective, it's still an open letter to everybody going thru it. "...that's why I write freedom songs, for the real people" © Common. So yeah man, we DO want to hear YOUR experiences. But not at the sake of coming off as self righteous. Cuz truth be told, if a whole bunch of kids from the suburbs bought your music, but nobody from the hood, how would you feel? Would it matter? Would it still be "I write for myself"? Of course not. You want your music bangin in apartments of single black mothers, in the headphones of niggas on the bus who tryin their hardest to stay legit, in black communities, to anybody in the struggle regardless of race. That's what we want. Good music. You got it in you brotha. You got a gift. Shake the negativity off and get it poppin.

you must not read all the kweli hate on here... he could've said a LOT more. the golden rule 'treat people how you want to be treated' is nowhere to be found in post like 'kweli sucks', 'kweli has fallen off', etc... he could have said a LOT more. there's a lot of darts being thrown at him, and it takes a strong person (which all okayplayer artist are) to handle it. in my opinion he's being real nice to those who post without thinking first

>And alot of cats buying this music
>ain't caked up to begin with. So for their money, they want
>quality. No pun intended.

if you think an artist's material has fallen off with his/her last couple releases, why would you buy his next cd without getting the word from the streets first?, and plus, you probably know somebody who can get it off the net before it hits the shelf anyway, so this point makes no sense

come on man, do you really think that the hood would COMPLETELY abandon kweli? like he said, if you dont like it, cool, somebody else will buy it. and i'm pretty sure kweli would want his music to be heard inside and outside the hood, inside and outside the country too. listen to artist like jeezy, wayne, and cam if you want to listen what the hood or the majority of the hood is feelin

>You want your music bangin
>in apartments of single black mothers, in the headphones of
>niggas on the bus who tryin their hardest to stay legit, in

how you gon say niggas this, black communities that, and then say to anybody in the struggle regardless of race lol... why not just say the last sentece lol anyway...

"The hood is where my heart is at" - Kweli/Beautiful Struggle/Around my way... this might be one of the songs you skipped or albums you didnt care to listen to.

>That's what we want. Good music. You got it in you

i think Kwe is being very contradictory in a lot of what he said here.

i dont respect his attitude towards this community or its fans.

yes, he does okp events and is promoted here... but thats all business, thats not a way to defend yourself from bitching out the people on this community.

i could go on, but ill just be provoking more posts like this.

whatever, everyones over it.

my best advice to Kwe would be focus less on shit like this and make sure your next album is fire, cause thats the only way you will earn the respect of people here again.

to you as a hate fest
your music was instrumental in lots of areas in my life
your music has touched me
and im sure lost of listeners
then u come to okay player acting like we dont matter
why in the world are you paying to be an artist here?
nobody is saying you cant grow
look at Badu
she went from boho head dressed sister
to worldwide underground EP
she has grown
she has maintained her essence
and even tho she has drawn criticism
she is still pumping out good music
and she has come to okaplayer
and INTERACTED WITH THE FANS
SHE HAS TOOK HEAT FROM FANS AND DIDNT RUN TO DAN BITCHING
she held her own in both artist
and activist
she doesnt come her to just bitch and be reactionary
since you want to take cues and use other artists as example
why dont u learn from badu

you must be so proud of yourself, tellin all your friends you pissed off kweli on the internet. i don't know what's going on in your life, you probably need attention, and he shouldn't even have respond to people like you who didn't learn to respect other people and talk like a 14 year old kid going through his teenager crisis.

You can't say you didn't have support for black star or lyricist lounge or train of thought. Damn near everyone who posts here would put black star in their top 25.

And the whole, "you're mad cuz I'm famous, loving life and travelling the world" Just wow. Who's acting like who knows whom now?

But if this isn't some bitch shit, I don't know what is, man.

I donno what the original post said, so I'm not going to address that. Maybe it was extra. BUT...I could give a fuck if Dead Prez cured cancer on the 2000 OKP tour. It's 2006, and if M1 wants me to like his 2006 album, he better make it tight. It's absolutely ridiculous to assume anyone's gonna give an artist some kind of lifetime achievement pass if they put out a bad album, and frankly, overall, "Confidential" was.

Meanwhile, you make this whiny-ass post to talk about how you're not a whiner? Dude...go run your record label, make your music, and sell it. If you really weren't a whiner, you wouldn't have to make this bi-annual sandy vagina appeal for love to a message board. And on one level, I get that artists want to be appreciated for the work they do, especially if, like a lot of OKP artists, they're serious about what they do. But for fuck's sake, grow up about it. Some ppl are gonna feel it, some are gonna hate. Handle your biz, give love where love is shown to you, and move on with your life.

This shit is just sad.

he needs to bring his ass to DC for a show though...for real.

this is from your myspace with reference to the M1 business;

"...but if you are going to say an album is terrible and question the revelance of an artist on a website designed to promote awareness of these artists, youre just being an asshole."

now, saying "this album is terrible" and not elaborating on why is stupid and pointless, but you seem to be saying that people shouldn't criticize OKArtists on this site AT ALL - and that's just wrong. if people wanna say that albums are terrible, they should be able to say it here, as long as they explain why they think that, and refrain from insulting the artist.

dude if u wanna sell records, which i imagine u do. u better GET computer savy. this shit is promotion. every time skillz posts, negroes are trying ot see what he's gonna say u aint' gotta be bill gates either.

BE is a better album than EC. evne tho it had it's misteps. can u say your album was better or as good as the last album?

and that's it. oh and since u make music for you and not for me as a fan i'd like to offer to sell u back your cd's i'll inbox u my contact info. jokes......well i'd like to give you beautiful struggle back tho....just kidding.....but for real, tho

i really said all i need to say in that other post. i don't know if you want fans to really enjoy your music, of if u just want them to buy it just cause it's you, and they are "down by law". whatever, the point is a lot of your fans are telling you that u haven't been bringing it...a LOT. now if you don't want me and the others to buy your album, stick with the staus quo. but if u wanna excel, u need to up that shit. your audience is talking to you. unless u just wanna go to a show, and be able to say "toenail" and have THOSE down by law muhfuckas on some "THAT NEGRO SAID TOENAIL, HE'S THE GREATEST" where is the integrity in that? that's not genuine.

u need to 'Move this fuckin Crowd' like we all know u can.

repect for responding.

and i will CONTINUE to give my honest opinion of ALL okay artists here, U included.

to set things off. something that shows some thought and maybe touches on different points Kweli makes since he has taken an interest in speaking on comments other people are making about him. This is not a judgment against you, I know you've been on OKP for many years and engage the boards frequently. I didn't think "let it go" showed any respect for the effort Kweli made to speak his mind to those who address him anonymously and I was hoping it would start off differently. Still, people just can't seem to want to show much respect for the man.

sure. there's a lot of people out there who just hate and don't offer any constructive criticism, but lets be serious here. the whole point of okayplayer is to discuss music and hip hop culture in general. a lot of artists on here recieve hate. heck, the roots (?uest) & little brother, who are on the site more often than you recieved a lot of hate for Tipping Point/Minstrel Show and you dont hear them whining. i just find it weird how you take so much offense to it. if someone doesn't like your album then fuck them (even if its me). if i released an album and someone wasn't gonna buy it anyway, i could care less what they say.

Nuance isn't at home on OKP

Whatever people on this site feel, they feel FOR REAL

Y'all need to give this whole thing a rest. I don't feel every album Kweli has put out, but I dig him as an artist nonetheless, and on his own site, in a community that he's obviously part of, seems a little off-base to trash his or M1's work without some constructive criticism or respect.

But hey, that's just how I was raised.

Damn-- no one's taking away your right to dislike music, just saying, no need to be tactless about it. Reminds me of someone who's mad loud at a library and when they're asked to keep it down they go OH HELLLL NO I KNOW YOU DIDNT TELL ME TO BE QUIET

the man makes damn good art from his heart, actually strives to improve himself, and gets absolutely trashed over trivial shit just like Com does and Mos does and everyone else. but i just think a point had to be made that a general "okayplayer in the house" name-drop is not even in the same ballpark as the kind of novels and week-long specific attention he gives to cats who piss him off

im a fan and sometimes after listening to a 'get by' or 'four women' or 'black girl pain' or 'ms hill', or any given song on any given cd, depending on my mode, i want to say thank you. but you aint make the music for me.

but im gonna continue to be a fan no matter what direction your music takes as long as you still come with those potent themes and messages.

however, i wish you would chill on addressing the folks on this board that dont appreciate you and inter-act with the ones that do.

why dont any okayartists ever comment on the work on freestyle? y'all too busy? do they even go there to see what we do?

cat r.kelly is ON TAPE getting
grimey with the underaged...

fans sellout madison square garden.

slim thug sells his joints out the trunk...

cat is a millionaire on his fan strength
without a major deal.

dipset makes the same album three times
in a row?

fans rep harder than scientologists,
knowing that dipset style is bootleg
and knockoff. think they care? nope.

they rep dipset. PERIOD.

meanwhile, brother talib reps okp to the fullest
on every album...drops arguably two classics out
the gate and manages to stay 'postive' and 'creative'
without dissing no black women or 'embarassing the race.'

what his fans do?

they download his album.
fileswap the joint.
diss him.
DON'T BUY said album when it hits
the record stores.
and then stand poised and ready
to diss any 'commercial' move he
might make to recoup.

thus:

'conscious' rap fans = wackest in the game.

b'lee dat.

bottom line is anyone with questionable ethics will continue to sell out if their music is remotely good. what Talib needs is like one or two producers for the WHOLE album. like a Hi-Tek. then his shit will be consistent and it'll bang.

and as if we're supposed to support a musician just cos he's a stand-up guy? like i know the dude personally?

the charts and the dollars don't lie.

too short hasn't made an album in
four, five years, but i guarantee
he could drop a joint this fall and
ship plat out the gate.

HIS fans are real fans.

same with redman. jay-z. ugk.
e40, whoever. they support the
artists they like with album
purchases and concert attendance.

YALL cats...?

it is an unquestioned fact that the
NEXT MOVEMENT and the soulquarians -
depsite all their talent and touring -
never got supported by their 'fans'
as consistently as other rap and
r and b acts.

like i said, the dollars and the
chart positions don't lie.

i dunno if NINTH even read it,
but in a post he made i told them
period point blank that they should
disentangle themselves from you guys
as soon as possible. okp fans hold
artists hostage while simultaneously
refusing to wholeheartedly support them
finanically. it happened with talib.
it happened with common. it happens
with the roots. and it will happen to
little brother, unless they continue to
make the move they are making (like
hooking up with dj drama, and networking
wtih folks like weezy f and other
southern artists who like them)

you muthafuckas will doom an artist
to critical acclaim and slim pockets,
if they tie their artistic success to you.

if you doubt me, ask yourself why jill
scott's second album sounds the way it
does?

hint: nobody can eat trynna court you
guys anymore. you don't support artists enough.

i dont understand why im supposed to buy an album based on the fact that im "down" like that. a "real" fan. shit, i mean just cause an artist put out something classic 10 years ago, im supposed to buy everything that artist puts out from now on?

fuck that.

fuck too short. fuck jay z. fuck the roots. fuck every fucking artist of all time. whether they're my favourites or not. i buy music that I LIKE! cause i like it, not cause i feel obligated to own the fucking discography. i will buy game theory because i know first hand through quests posting the effort that motherfucker is putting into it. they have never disappointed me. k, maybe the tipping point didnt "effect" me the way "roots come alive" or "do you want more?!?!?" did when i was in tenth grade, but they've never jumped the shark on us. that effort is felt everytime i make a purchase. through the production, the liner notes, or the talent riq displays on tracks like web.

if an artist really wants to say he makes music for him and only him, then why the fuck you go on tv and promote that shit. hold up...why even release it at all? make any money off it whatsoever? if its so self-actualized, why not make for yourself and listen to it on your own home stereo. no artist that makes money for their craft is really "ALL about making shit for themself"

cause thats bullshit. you're making music to make money, and for yourself.

no. but you'll definitely give em a late pass. took me three albums to realize that i'm not feeling kweli anymore. but it was worth it for me to find out. that's what a loyal following (is supposed to) get you.

>if an artist really wants to say he makes music for him and

Nobody's sayin that. Kweli explained it best, bout the creative process bein all his. but once you put it out there, it's no longer solely yours. You are now selling it. Every artist realizes this with whatever they do, be it writing, filming, whatever. Remember when Kweli got all pissed about some album getting leaked (don't remember which one, Beautiful Struggle?)? It is like that. He was in the process of making.

Yall okayplayers on the rag or something? Someone needs to play Jay-Z's Can I Live for this thread...

Anyhow, personally I feel that his music has over time fell off emotionally. Your voice doesn't seem to have that drive or motivation anymore. Songs like For Women are absolutely amazing because of that soul that you express through your lyrics. Lately I feel that you are trying to cater to too many crowds when this fan base is the one that has supported you throughout your whole musical career and to alienate them is like career suicide. However some of these people are biased people who can't back up their arguments thoughtfully at times and ignorance makes me angry as well. I mean we all want to hear the stuff that made you popular, but growing as an artist and trying different things is something that you have to do for yourself and keep on doing it. As an artist myself I make music for myself as well because it provides an outlet for all my feelings and thoughts and to cater something that is so meaningful to me is out of the question. Anyhow, I'm done and this may be biased because I'm a huge Kweli fan, one of my favorite emceees of all time.

Peace out...

when it comes to being an artist, especially an OKP one. There are countless haters amongst us, but personally I ignore their petty comments since I know people are ALWAYS going to have something to say.

And you do mention the hate often, but I guess if I really think about it you do spread love too. Your music is enough appreciation for me, (not dick riding) so don't stop making that HEAT and being true to the art.

It's all LOVE (yes, even the haters love you)!

Well, I wanna thank U 4 takin' the time to express yourself but ultimately, you don't have to. The best you can do is make your music & live your life. People like to think their particular POV is the only way (kinda like religion & you know how they can get!!!) & you'd better listen or else.

I'm a big Prince fan. He drops mad albums. Some I like, some I don't. But I don't curse or insult the brother. I got too much love & respect for what he's already done before. But I do know that we live in America and we are a 'what have you done for me lately?" civilization. Most folks don't appreciate what has come before. The ole' "you're only as good as your last fill-in-the-blank" syndrome.

But thanx for the peek. It's always good to get a look inside the mind of an artist.....

Easy!

I'm an official OKP Hater. And it's not just the brand of music, because OKP represents many of my favorite artists. It's not just the fact that back in the mid to late 90's--when most of the OKP artists start seeing some real shine--it just so happened that 80% of the audiences at these artists' live shows couldn't possibly represent or repsect "the struggle". I don't hate on OKP because I'm a starving artist who just can't seem to get down. Nor am I an obsessed fan with no real outlet besides the internet to satisfy my need to "belong". The reason I hate OKP is because it has-- as does mostly every other entity that attaches itself to my people--become a rapist. I hate OKP for the same reason I hate Def Jam, MTV, BET, Radio 1 and mostly all other VIACOM subsidiaries. Anywhere a mf like Talib Kweli can get this much hate on his own site is somewhere I don't think I need to be. Do you really think people are on laffytaffyplayer.com or demfranchiseboysplayer.com disrespecting those artists? This shit is ridiculous, because I don't have most of you that have disrespected both M1 and Kweli saying any of that to their faces. And I realize that is one of the cons that comes along with the internet, but yabasa (sp)!!...lol. Seriously, I was a PA on Dead Prez' first video (well actually my girl at the time was working wardrobe, but being PA...that's the lie I tell people) and I hated on those kids. Musically, I didn't get it. I'm a traditional head-nod nigga and they just didn't move me. At first glance, I thought they were just some down south cats that caught some culture from an HBCU or somewhere and blew because they was spittin' pseudo-knowledge to a fanbase that obviously had no cultural or revolutionary exposure. As I listened closer, I learned quickly that just the mere fact that they'd taken a stand to certain things, particularly at that time--the beginning years of the bling era---that they represented true hip-hop. I have never owned a Dead Prez album, but they most definitely have my utmost repsect. That's the purpose of this reply. And I don't relieve the artists' responsibility to the situation. If I didn't overstand where Kweli was coming from in his statements, I'd assume, like many, that he was another spoiled star. Sorta like Sprewell or something; similar, but in an entirely different vein. Unfortunately, at the core of this "issue" is OKP itself. What had the potential to be a real movement in 2000, has become one big ass myspace page and the artists just happen to be myfriends. This is fine but it can be much more. While the writers still usually keep the content filled with useful information, I don't think it is being packaged and distributed in the proper markets. Maybe OKP should charge for membership or offer OKP VIP where a true artists community can exists and folk would need thier work reviewed and approved in order to have the privelege to interact with the OKP community. As it stands, if I'm Kweli or M1 or Common, I would have little to no motivation to interact with many of you and this is sad. I don't think this is what they had in mind. People such as myself, who read OKP but rarely post, are turned away by this type of nonsense. I just read like 6 straight replies that dis Kweli and unless the posters know of some dirt this brother had done personally, I can't imagine him deserving that type of treatment...on his own site. Let me make this warning: If both the owners of OKP and the community players, themselves, don't find a true movement or revolution to which this energy can be directed, I see a bleak future for OKP.com. Obviously, you, the current OKP generation is failing to attract a new or next generation so you are what you make it. There are a lot of talented, connected, righteous, and revolutionary folk that are members of this site and involved in this community. Negativity is divisive. We know better. Don't just talk shit. Make shit happen. If you ain't feeling M1, don't diss him on his own site. Make a hot ass record that disses him, yet respects his politics (how can you not?) or at least reflects your own. Damn!

I've been on this site for a good few years.

It's always been hostile, but I noticed it has become a lot more hostile in the last little bit. Probably has somthing to do with the extreme increase in population and people going to extremes to get their voices and comments heard.

like taking e. badu's fox wearing self to court and ish.

damn. mofo's acting as if it were life and death on these boards. probably cuz no one can see who they are.

I think it was always hostile because it is the Internet, where everyone is nearly anonymous.

It may have been less hostile in the early years because people could only stay online for so long before they were paying out the ass. Now you can stay on the net 24/7 and it remains affordable. So you have more bored people killing time and anonymously talking shit because they can.

The only thing more ridiculous than how serius OKP's take themselves is someone taking OKP's serius. I just think Kweli needs to think before he logs on; ask himself, "What is the best that can come from this?"

At best, he will get a handful of constructive responses, and a whole wall of bullshit. Stay talking to people face to face, where they have to be accountable for their words if you want a positive conversation. Come on OKP if you want to laugh...or cry. Either way, the fact that all of this shit is still going has got to be a joke.

112. "im feelin you but you gotta allow niggas to say what they feel at times"
In response to Reply # 0

i completely agree that dude who wrote that post was off base, purely off the fact that he didn't offer any constructive criticism, he just said it was wack and that was it. Yea, that nigga needs to shut up, but i think as fans you gotta allow us to say stuff and criticise. I think despite the popular conception that real die-hard fans ride for any album put out by their favorite artist, im one to believe that real fans, especially music fans are actually MORE critical of their favorite artist. Sure they allow him or her to grow, however just because one is growing don't mean that it is tight, a nigga can try to do some unorthodox shit, which i like but that don't mean ima be jumpin up and down gleefully like "man he went left field, hes a real artist". Sometime folks be thinkin that if a nigga steps out the box, automatically he is a better artist than the ones who are "confined" within the parameters of said music genre, in this case hip-hop. Outkast stepped out of the box a little, that was tight. Mos Def stepped out of the box, it wasn't that good, the nigga sounded exactly like the white rap-rock groups he was dissing. However, his songs with his singing were nice...

At the end of the day, you're saying that you don't mind constructive criticism, but you're comin off as if any time a nigga makes a comment that directly says or implies that niggas shit is just not jumpin off like that, that we ain't real heads and we don't know what we're talkin bout, that's my only real disagreement wit your reply. Other than that, i respect your grind, i got all your albums, RE, Blackstar were your best, Quality was tight, and Beautiful Struggle was mediocre at best , right bout now was better wit a few bangers, ms hill, supreme, and the joint wit jean grae. I think as a consumer, i have the right to say that, even more importantly, as a REAL FAN of talib kweli, not some mindless drone who would bob their head if you said " i like that laffy taffy joint". That ain't me and i consider myself a big fan of you, however i am also a MUSIC fan and sometimes you, and other okayartist don't be puttin out hot shit. period.

Like the one time you said on one song, "i don't fuck wit politics/i don't even follow it", but yet you say stuff like "the democrats are acting like republicans", which is obviously inherently political, my point in bringin that up was not to diss, but to ask is it alright for me to critique that or would you rather i eat up the inherent contradictions? i don't know, but regardless i got love...

I am absolutely disgusted of all the hating going on about Talib Kweli. You guys should go back and review what he has contributed to hip hop music. I fully respect him and his work, and it is felt through his music that he is spiritually progressing as an individual an artist and as father.

A lot of people might feel that his mixtapes haven't been up to par, but you have to realize that he is making music along with the current trends of hip hop. Personally, I'm not the biggest fan of the dirty south, but collaborating with such artists only broadens his skills as an artist.

IF YOU GUYS WERE 'LOVERS OF MUSIC' LIKE BLACK THOUGHT SAYS THEN YOU WOULD RESPECT ANY STAGES ONE HAS TO OVERCOME TO BE AT A BETTER PLACE IN LIFE.

On the real, talib, keep doing what your'e doing.......

The thing about contructive criticism or criticism in any form is that just cause a person "A" gives some...and just cause a person "B" is open to receive it...doesn't mean person B a has to like or agree or even accept critism...in fact, he might be inclined to bug and hit person "A" in they mf face...of course, cyberspace protects us from that scenario...besides, noone gave constructive criticism....mf's was just hatin'...pure, unadulterated hate...M1 or Kweli could have re-made "Edutainment" (the best rap record of all time..) and recieved that same bullshit...the hate is personal...i see this alot in "conscious" places....its usually from a former fake thug type who played themselves out trying to be thugs when they weren't really...then tunred around and jumped on the neo-soul or conscious rap bandwagon when mf's like kweli and mos made it cool to do so...if i spent most of my time frontin' I guess I'd hate on brothers who never had to, too!

Matin consciously hits mf's in they face, though....ask around!

from Lyricist Lounge to Reflection Eternal to Kweli:Confidential, he has stayed on course with his message. He's found different ways to express what's going on in the world today.

The Manifesto
The Blast
Love Language
Africa Dream
Eternalist
Rush
Get By
Guerilla Monsoon Rap
Won't You Stay
Ms. Hill
Supreme, Supreme
2+2
B.D.K.
I Try
Around My Way
Ghetto Show
Beautiful Struggle

This is only a small sampling of the strength of his work. Yes I'm a fan, I grew up on Public Enemy, KRS-One, Big Daddy Kane, Rakim, and I won't hesitate to say that Kweli has easily carried the torch for them.

What are you looking for in music, what are you hoping that it will do for you? For me I ask that music challenge my mind, make me think, make me realize. Kweli delivers, Mos Def delivers, Pharoah delivers, Dead Prez Delivers, The Roots deliver.

And all of you here trying to stir things uo just for the sake of stirring things up, go ahead with that, we're all very proud of you, go tell your girl about this...

Take the hate to other sites please... constructive criticisnm only here...

In my personal opinion and experience with the movement, PE,Kane,Rakim share a common trait with Kweli.... to me, you disagree and I respect that...

like i said growing up i was all about Kane, PE, KRS, ATCQ... but as they slowly faded, there was avoid for and it was the likes of Kweli, Mos, The Roots, Common that re-ignited my love for the game....

but i understand your argument... skill wise...

he was more intricate lyrically, and by that i mean his rhyme schemes, wordplay, metaphors were better. As were his songwriting ability and the production on blackstar and RE was much better than beautiful struggle and right about now, But the only thing better now is his ability to ride the beat. I actually like quality and think it is a real good album.

And he was just more raw, honestly and sometimes that not something you can articulate, or explain because it involves a lot of intangibles. But i think intuitively most people can "feel" the difference, but as is with feelings they are sometimes hard to express. To me he was more hungry, like i said before raw, and i think a little bit more "i just don't give a fuck", if that makes any sense....

he wasnt THAT lyrical back then..he was DOPE ..but he has gotten better as a lyricist...he may have sounded "raw" but only because he was starting out...he was young...hes more polished now....its like hearing Jigga on Blueprint and on The Black Album..u can TOTALLY hear the difference between the 2...but Blueprint may be the better ALBUM...but on The Black album he's the better emcee...hands down. so bun out with your excuse.

Fo sho..I LOVE Talib for that...I completely agree and I'm on the exact same page...seems like too many ppl today are too quick with their opinions and much too quick to judge when they need to respect things for what they are...respect other ppl and the things they do and do your own thing..don't expect Talib to make what you wanna hear...he's HAS given us the most material and whether you like it or not, it's something....
I probably love Talib's music almost as much as he loves it himself (the only thing i'm missin is the pride of creatin it) and I love him for givin us so much of his work...I love hearing from him and where he's at...where's everyone else at? Really, you don't kno, cuz they don't drop us these mixtapes and stuff between albums...I love being able to follow Kwe as he comes up with new stuff...At the very least he deserves mad respect for that alone...

Once again...I hate when ppl are too quick to form opinions and judge others...who are you to say ish? ...I'm jus sayin...don't knock others for what they do..

AND haters...please check yo'selves....you DO NOT kno everything about good music and what constitutes it...don't come up here with ur b.s about good music...try jus sittin back and listening to the music..and do it without judging every bit...jus relax yo'self..

Peace

How can you ask for respect but not give it? If you don't like us because you think we're computer geeks then fine. Unfortunately I love your (earlier) music, but ain't supporting you no more. I'm downloading ya shit from now on. You just dissapointed me Kweli, I thought you were better than that.

First and foremost, you can't expect EVERY damn artist in this industry to SUCCEED. All of them have their own flaws, and none of you have any say in their opinions. Talib for one can at least stand up for himself. You don't gotta like him, but RESPECT the man. He ain't done shit. So what if you THINK that he hadn't made any good music in a while, that's what you think, your opinion, so keep that shit to yourself. If you don't got anything positive to say, don't say it. You actually think that shit is gonna help one way or another? Just putting more shit on the artist? And so what if Kweli's gonna talk about artists in that blog/post.. he has a right to, and if that's what he wants to say, then let it be. I don't get a lot of you. What don't you get? He's not only tryna prove some things wrong out here, but also tryna make yall understand and to give him some respect. Bet half of yall thatre talkin shit dont know what its like to be an artist.. so save that shit for yourself.

All the people still hatin' after reading Kweli's blog are either just trying to get attention like a momma's boy or are just plain Dumb and Illiterate.
Like he said while ya'll sit in your high tec Imacs and PC's trying to get attention in OK player forum. He is living a meaningful and productive life. Much like all of us that dig what he says and have a LIFE (key word). Go play your Simcity and waist the rest of your day in front of your computer while most of us contribute to society and get way ahead of ya'll in life.

I love how people automatically assume when they are posting that everyone else is either 12 years old or some bum with no life.

Meanwhile most of us are just looking for a way to kill time at work. Now you can go ahead and say that I'm wasting my life at this job, and that's probably true, but at least I'm getting paid to be on okayplayer.

First off Kweli it was seriously an honor to get to open for you at the NYU Skirball show last Friday. You've always been an icon I've drawn inspiration from and felt challenged by to make great much-needed and bangin' music. Everytime I see you rock it just reaffirms that.

You make a great point about not making music for the fans. That card is always brought up, "this is for the streets!" to justify some seriously wack and damaging shit. That ain't leadin' that's following, and some serious bullshit -- either historically in a political sense if you wanna take it there (i.e slavery) or culturally (disco anyone?) -- has been popular in a general sense. Popular demand alone never justifies anything, especially given the "hidden hands" that mold people's views and tastes. I think the really great artists aren't just true to themselves, even in the face of great isolation, they produce what the world needs but doesn't have yet, the unarticulated dreams of millions of people, whether they know it or not (and goddam some mufuckas is in the dark). And that takes some serious vision and understanding. Thank god for people like you and M-1 (for the record I'm not feelin' the whole album but a lot of it is fire! "For You" is seriously my joint, fuck all this narrow hating on the South just 'cuz we can't get it together in NYC and have fun, this ain't the mufuckin' Civil War, where you think Black music came from, word to New Orleans). Anyhow keep trailblazin' TK!

where I'll be when OKPs realize:
1. their opinions on artist don't matter outside of OKP...

2. OKArtists don't really care about their "critiques"/opinions/photos/soundclick pages/myspace pages/hobbies even if they say they do...

3. okayplayer.com is NOT a real place...

4. simply because you have a voice doesn't mean you have anything worth saying...

5. at best this site is ENTERTAINMENT

6. artists don't owe fans anything...

7. outside of this site most OKPs don't even EXIST

saying that artist don't owe fans anything is ridiculous, and almost not worth responding to however im bored. To keep it short and sweet, fans are the only reason any artist, actor, athlete gets paid, period. To say he don't needs fans is like saying a newborn didn't need a man and/or female to be born, he just "magically" appears. please nigga

Those my niggas, anyway Talib has fallen off just a little bit, but thats life you can't expect a nigga to stand still, that's true. Hopefully the albums get better. At the same time I respect that dude and I always support, because he is Crack and has substance, thats kind of rare. Lots of rappers that have subtance but their not CRACK!!! Then lots are DOPE but they aint talking bout shit. I feel he"s kind of smart, cause by him growing, he kind of expanding his market. For example I'm from Uptown DC, man I don't know hardly any nigga's that fucked with Kweli Prior to "Get by" now more people that usually wouldn't fuck with Kweli now do. Even though the albums aren't as good as the classics. I like it though because the goal should be to be yourself and relate to as many people as possible. M1 is a real nigga too, you aint got to like the album but he a real nigga and I guess as a sub plot he was defending him but he got a lot off his chest. OKP is a good sight some of ya are some rightous muthafucka's and that is beutiful sometimes but I like to mix it with the GAngst Shit!!!!!

You write a lot about judgment but fail to realize that you do it yourself. I mean, you were sitting in front of your computer screen while writing that. There is a lot of ego stroking in your words and it honestly got on my nerves.

You didn't like the way someone spoke about M1s album and automatically that gives you the right to speak on all of us? You spent a lot of time writing about having the right to an opinion, and yet you judge some of us for ours. Why don't you just log on and converse with the rest of us instead of projecting from your blog?

to me it's about familiarity. when I listen to a song by Kweli I don't think "Ok I should expect this or that in the lyrics or styles" but I know that if he's being true to who he is as an individual artist then the familiarity will shine through. I think it's a natural thing too...it's your enviroment, whats goin' on, who u hang with, what your into etc. it should all be within your artistry.

if Kweli were to set out to try to please a certain audience by only rappin' about this cliche or conversely rapping about everything to prove he's the best to a certain group of fans it wouldn't be a natural process in the song writing(or his life). artists need the time & freedom of flexibility to grow. I'm glad dude gets it. always been one of the dopest emcees.

He writes backwards but he's better to work with then half the students here.

Wordup, you out of control with that last line son!?!?!!

Kweli love your music man. My only beef is the selection of the beats. People are missing the Hi-tek sound you were synonymous for in your early work on Rawkus. Lyrically the passion is still there. We just need better beats and the haters will transform back into the fans they previously were. Can't wait for the new album, peace.

my suggestions: Hi-tek, 9th wonder, kanye west, 88 keys, madlib.

to each other or to their friends on the streets, in school, at work, dudes is having the same conversation about Talib and being disappointed, it's just that this is a PUBLIC forum where that type of talk is common place, most times the hate can be ignored by people who actually like the intelliectual conversation, but same shit in real life - ignorant cats get played, but if you come to these forums, and complain about discussions on music, its stupid man - you might as well record a whole album and title every song "I hate rap fans" and sell it, you're preaching to a choir.
