"'Don't Say Nuthin'"

What a crap song. The beat sounds like something Maddona would sing over. It may it in the club if thats what they are going for. I can see the Roots in shiny suits for the video. I liked the love songs but this is the end.

Cd's that you should own
The Shins - Chuttes Too Narrow
Loretta Lynn - Van Lear Rose
The Mars Volta - de-loused in the comatorium
Bjork - Live Homogenic

Crush of the Month
Mia Kirshner - L Word.

People have the right to criticize. I dont know why some artists think they are above it. Its been happening since people have been making art. If someone puts out some week shit, people are gonna say something.

>People have the right to criticize.

-true enough.

>I dont know why some artists think they are above it. Its been happening since people have been making art. If someone puts out some week shit, people are gonna say something.

-that all fine & good. my issue is w/ the fact that sometimes the "criticism" posts sound a bit redundant.

-i think maybe i'd be more receptive if you'd say more than "the beat sucks".

-iono. it ain't just directed @ you. pay me no mind....

don't think ppl give the song enough credit. personally, i don't like the beat but for some reason, black thought always comes hella muthafuckin nice on storch beats. i'll take the trade-off. weird choice of single tho. should've had ?uest on the croonaphone for the hook. brush the dirt off ur drumsticks qoolpimp!

I hate to say it, but i kinda agree. I wouldnt mind the track on the album, but to make this the first single shocks me. there is no bass and sounds very mainstreamish. the thing that bugs is that the entire song is sampled. the roots stand for organic sound, and it just isnt in this song. i feel really bad complaining about the song on the roots/okayplayer boards and all, but i just gotta voice my two cents.

i am confident the rest of the CD will be amazing, but i just gotta question why they made this the first single.

basically you're saying that they should release a single that doesn't sound like the roots in order to fool more people into buying the album... sorry for twisting your words around but that's what i get out of it.

it being "all samples" as someone described it doesn't surprise me in one sense because it's produced by scott storch and he sounds a lot more dr. dre than the roots nowadays. he recorded the song w/ BT in miami. why would they release a non-roots, basically black thought solo song as a single though? seems silly. sampling is cool but if it's all samples that kind of defeats the purpose of being a band.

i haven't heard this yet but i don't listen to the radio. is there a place on the web (not p2p) where i can download the mp3? i have all the roots albums (legitimately), it's not like i'm not going to buy the album.

artists like the roots or kweli or mos always have a "catchy song" as their first single. it is not necessarily the best song of the whole album.
For ex. "waiting for a dj" was the first song off quality and it definitely isnt the best song on the album.
or " coming to break you off" not the best song of the album but definitely more catchy than other songs.
or "ms. fat booty" thats the catchiest song on the whole album. but that album has way better songs than that.
so regardless to what the first single sounds like. i am definitely buying the album on the day it comes out.
and then i will criticize.

upon first listen it's much like the first time i heard "break you off" and i didn't like it too much but it grew on me. i'm sure the same will happen to this. thought impressed me a lot but i wasn't really feelin the beat too much. it will grow on me though. i'm lookin at this more as a look of things to come. i have high expectations for "The Tipping Point" and i doubt they will dissapoint.

only difference is break you off had a good beat. the reason this post is here is because the beat is very simple and a lot of people arent pleased with it.

anyone else have a problem with the mumbled chorus?

I agree that the beat is way too basic for my liking and the mumbled chorus isn't my thing either (just what is he saying?).
Now I want the roots to attract as many people to there music as possible, I'm at uni and I'm constantly showing people, who's idea of hip hop is jay z and 50 cent, how the roots are different to others, with thought proving lyrics and exceptional musicanship. This single though doesn't show this (muiscally) and I don't even believe it will be commercially successful. The Seed had the originally beat (which attracted interest from rock fans especially here in the UK) and catchy chorus, this doesn't.

Its still an OK album song and there is no way I'm not gonna buy the tiping point, I think I'm just disappointed coz I wanted ?uest to give us that raw drum sound like we got on te organix album or on something like double trouble.

i havent heard it yet, but does it sample the original 'joe tex' song?

man 30 people will be on here saying this song is the downfall of the roots, and that everything is so horrible.

and then 4 months later make a post titled, "dont say nuthin" revisted', and will proclaim their love for such after sleeping on it.

i want to hear it, i bet its hot. "break you off" was pretty tight, and "waiting for the dj" was decent too. best songs on their repective lps? no. good songs i dont mind hear getting some burn? yes.

Now if the Tipping Point turns out to be this shit x10 (or 12, or whatever...), then I'll be pissed. But this is the Roots we're talking about here people ... do you really think they're gonna forget to bring something else to the table?

This reminds me of the first time I heard "Break You Off" ... crazy disappointed, plus that was with the video -- imagine my reaction to that song the first time 'round. Of course once i heard the full-length version sans seeing Black Thought "make love," I changed my tune.

This will grow on me, and it'll grow on all of you too. And with any luck, TP will rank right up there with everything that's come before. When have they ever let us down with an album? It may not be what you expect, but that doesnt mean it won't be solid.

I for one love it. I wanted to hear some new Roots music and that's what this is. Let the hate begin but I think the joint is hot, especially the hook. I'm gonna be mumbling that for days "didzididibmlzinbim...give it here don't say nuthin". Oh and as a Madonna fan, I don't think this sounds like anyhitng she's remotely come close to. And besides is that really an insult. I mean I bet Riq could spit fire over that "Get in to the Groove" beat

C: it IS a club joint. so? hiphop's a club joint. ok we've gone down this road before and people keep poo-pooing that point, BUT it also shows range, and a bit of "we can do that too, but better -- WHUT!"

and finally...the main thing you folks are totally missing...is

D: LIVE POSSIBILITIES! Imagine how this is going to be flipped at a show?! With the band??? COME ON! Game Over after i see that, I'm sure of it. You can just tell these dudes are salivating over the different possible live arrangements. Shit has potential to bring real power to the venue.

Everyone keeps saying this is Dreish or something that reminds them of Dr.Dre. But the reality of it is that Scott has been doing so much of Dre shit for the last couple of years that you don't even know what a Dre beat is. This is Scott all the way, and the beat is sick! It's time he gets the love he deserves, from the Beyonce, Ja-Rule "Clap Back", Jada Kiss "New Joint", Chirtine Agularia, and now The Roots. Open your minds and except change dude is a beast and the lyrics are just MURDER! Blackthought killz this joint, LISTEN!!!! To what dude is saying. It's a Banger!

Storch, a former Roots member himself IS the magic behind Dre. Remember Dre doesn't actually *write* music. Producers get all the credit, but the hooks are *written* by musicians. OK, maybe once in a while a producer hums some shit or is a musician, but Dre is not.

BUT

I think the thing that irks me and most sane, normal people that frequent this site is the disrespect.

Its art man, address and respect it as so. It takes a lot for someone to put something they made in front of other people, INCLUDING I acknowledge criticism. But that's not what most of this is.

'Sad thing about the internet is it has done away with things that I think artists take for granted, like respect and politeness and not sounding ignorant and pathetic and like a flock of unintelligent juveniles who love to bask in their anonymity.

Got news for you's: "I aint feelin this whack shit" is not constructive.

Neither is "The lyrics is aight but this beat aint shit".

That's why most artists don't want to be a part of this site anymore.

That's why the only thing that's left here is a bunch of fake internet thugs with no concept of what criticism is, who are slaves to a mob mentality and have nothing better to do with their time than get into pissing contests about who can sound more embarassingly sour.

That's why I already don't care about your replies about my low post count or how I'm off topic or how I'm wasting just as much time making this post as other people did making theirs or how if you would only meet me on the street we would fight. So don't bother.

(I like Don't Say Nuthin btw)

non-reactionary, looking at an issue from the other person's perspective all in one post=the holy grail of internet message boards. Online communities give people a great opportunity to voice opinions and connect with people of similar interest. The downside is that it becomes all too easy
1)to not think about whether or not what you say/post is of any value
2)forget that just because you have something to say/opinions doesn't mean that they should all be shared.
3)remember that their is a difference between an opinion and fact. Opinions are fine of you present them and treat them as such.

1. Funky beat sounds strange at first but got stuck in my head halfway through the second listen.
2. Black Thought kills it.
3. Has a 'summer' feel to it...you know, driving around blasting it on a warm night.

In short: I love it. Can't wait for the album.

I like that it isn't 'typical' Roots...but it is a logical progression that keeps many of their classic elements (e.g. stacatto beat, flow/interrupt, killer lyrics, non-formulaic, creates a mood). I think that's good. I, for one, don't want to hear umpteen albums that sound the same, no matter how good they are.

this song might not be roots-ish...or roots-esque...but its a banger...from the standpoint of how i relate to it and how i like it...and definitely from a standpoint of can this attract the masses...now they got the first part of the formula right...if they get the publicity/promotion/marketing support right...this song will take the roots to their tippin point at least sales and popularity wise

but i agree this is comes off like a BT song and not a Roots song IMHO

I dont mind if the Roots do a club song, that fine with me... but the beat is just too simple for my tastes. you can break down the structure of the song after 3 secs listening.. thought absolutely destroys it as usual, but i was just hopin for somethin a little more complex.

Yes you had Justin Timberlake, but they could have easily put out a dance number, and gone with the easy route. How many songs about racial harmony do you hear on the radio.

The Shins - Chuttes Too Narrow
Loretta Lynn - Van Lear Rose
The Mars Volta - de-loused in the comatorium

On my third lsiten, I quit doing everything and really listened. BT is ill, I don't really care for the mumbling, and the beat is...cool. Hopefully, this is the joint "for the radio". They are on a major label (Geffen), people. "Thicker than Big Boi's baby mom's sister"...that's hot!

Beat kinda sounds like Knight Rider, but anyway, after listening to it a few times, the song is tight and more evidence of the Roots' skills...

Ya'll should stop hating and enjoy the versatility that the Roots employ in everything they do. Who cares if it's not "organic" or like their "old" sound, the Roots are a dynamic band, always trying something different. You don't want them to stagnate and be predictable, THAT would get old. It's good that they're exploring sounds, and that they can pull this off. At least they can sound like Da Band as Rusty points out, but can Da Band ever pull off sounding like The Roots? Damn, people need to just ease up of comparing The Roots to their personal mold of what they should be, they are what they are...

black thought does kill it. he has such a great flow.

but...with that being said, it seemed like they just made this song for radio play for more sales. i have no idea what the rest of the album is like but this is nothing like what we're used to when it comes to the roots. change is a good thing, but this single seemed like they settled in order to make more sales. i just hope the rest of the album doesn't follow the same suit.

You can really hear that Philly sound. What I mean by that is, when I hear Thought, I kinda hear Ness from Da Band too. It's really funny to me. And not to start nothin', but, I hope he wasn't talkin about anybody in-specific when he said "its a shame what some people will do to get a necklace". Cause somebody could accidentally take that the wrong way.

it has alot of appeal, and i reckon it'll get them alot more radio play. Lotta people saying, "oh, it sounds like a dre track" or something, but i reckon the beat is real raw sounding, and suits BT. Roots "need" a track like this on the album. Although, I agree that it's more showcasing BT, rather than "the roots", as a band.

Anyway, Black Thought brings out some of the hottest shit i've ever heard on this one.

It's good, are some of you just too elite to accept a different sound? People call it a commericial track and imply that it's a sell out, but shouldn't selling out or going commercial be connected with an action and not a sound? And if the mainstream loevs this track is that bad? is it bad to push art into the pop culture? I mean if you don't like it you don't like but there's no need to attack their credibility or integrity.

Try to realise it's all within yourself
No-one else can make you change
And to see you're really only very small,
And life goes on within you and without you.

The repeated sample, the mumbled chorus, even the title for god's sake! this is the most satirical thing the roots have done since the "what they do" video.

it's such a shame that more people on this board don't realise it. if you guys don't see it, then i'm curious how the rest of hip-hop is gonna see it.

Okay I sat here and read every single one of the posts regarding this song so now I'mma give my OPINION.

First I feel a bit let down because I read that the TP was going to be a return to the Illedelph days and "Don't Sat Nothing" is not that. But judging the song on it's own I have to say that I like it. I don't love it and that's because my TASTES usually have me stearing clear of the really synthy sounding beats that have the blips and bleeps in them, which this song has plenty of.

I do like the way Thought came off on it though. I don't hear from his lyrics justification that this is a satire of commercial music. Thought has songs where he talks about stuff but more times than not he just rhymes, which I like. Hell that's how I do it too so I can't knock him. This song doesn't have that "bohemian" "neo-soul" (pardon the term) feel that the Roots are known for, but remember ?uest said that if Tariq and Kamal were the spokes men for the Roots we'd think they were Cash Money. (or something like that.)

The song as a whole is fun but I think that it won't stand the test of time. I think most that like it now won't come back to it and think that it's great years from now. I hope the rest of the album has a different feel but if this is what to expect I'm not mad, but it won't go in my classic file.

Please remember; The above is opinion of the poster and does not reflect what actually is but rather what he thinks.
