Bonnaroo: Late Night Led Zep Medleys and Passed-out Fans
By Jon Pareles

MANCHESTER, TENN.–

Bonnaroo’s late nights are bewildering. After the headline set, the mid-level jam bands vamp into the night. The same fields where I’ve been wandering all day are now unevenly lighted and populated by more or less vertical dancers, seated groups and sacked-out people who peaked too early to get back to their campgrounds. It’s a tribute to the courtesy of Bonnaroo’s audience that more people don’t wake up with footprints on them.

And then there are the crowds, like the one I’m now standing in at the Other Tent for Superjam: Ahmir (?uestlove) Thompson from the Roots on drums, Ben Harper on slide guitar and none other than John Paul Jones from Led Zeppelin on bass. One of the loudest roars all day went up when they started a Zep medley with a recognizable “Dazed and Confused.” But replacing Robert Plant and Jimmy Page with Mr. Harper changes things toward wah-wah and rootsy slide parts, while Mr. Jones is more than willing to toy with his old parts. The trio veered toward a P-Funk riff.

Mr. Thompson’s snappy drumming, in rock and funk, has partly atoned for the Roots’ earlier set. Instead of playing songs from the Roots’ long album catalog, they filibustered: first with an overextended version of their remake of Bob Dylan’s “Masters of War”–the beginning is sung to the tune of “The Star-Spangled Banner”–and then with Mr. Thompson singing “Roxanne.” Not a snippet or a hip-hop revision, but the whole song. They could have left that to the Police tomorrow–or, actually, later today.

Roots hate aside, the swipe above is a poor piece of writing - let alone a poor review. This swipe gives a slightly more favorable evaluation of the all-star jam....

Tool, all-star Zeppelin jam highlight Bonnaroo day 1
By Jonathan Cohen Sat Jun 16, 11:58 PM ET

MANCHESTER, Tennessee (Billboard) - A headlining performance from quirky hard rock act Tool and a once-in-a-lifetime jam session between Led Zeppelin bassist
John Paul Jones, guitarist
Ben Harper and drummer ?uestlove highlighted the first full day (June 15) of the Bonnaroo festival, which has drawn 80,000 people to rural Manchester, Tennessee.

Tool drew a massive crowd to the main stage for a set heavy on material from the band's latest album, "10,000 Days," including the single "The Pot," as well as older hits such as "Stinkfist" and "Schism." Rage Against the Machine guitarist
Tom Morello joined the group near the end of its set for "Lateralus" and conjured a tornado of sound from his instrument. Earlier, frontman Maynard James Keenan teased the dusty, dirty audience by gloating about the hot shower he had taken. "Thank you for putting up with our cynical attitudes," he said near the end of the performance.

As midnight passed, Jones, Harper and ?uestlove treated an amped-up, overflow crowd at the Other Tent to frequently jaw-dropping jams on Led Zeppelin's "When the Levee Breaks," "Good Times, Bad Times" and "Dazed and Confused," the latter a 25-minute epic that drove the audience into hysterics. The impromptu trio also covered Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues" and
Stevie Wonder's "Superstition," the later with the help of Roots guitarist
Kirk Douglas.

DJ Shadow held down the fort in the This Tent during a set that began after 2 a.m. The artist mixed and matched elements from throughout his song catalogue, on one number laying the vocal melody from "Six Days" atop the hip-hop beats of "Walkie Talkie." Other highlights included "Changeling," from Shadow's acclaimed 1996 debut, "Endtroducing," and "3 Freaks," the first single from his 2006 release "The Outsider."

Friday also featured performances from the Roots, the Black Keys, Lily Allen, Hot Chip, the String Cheese Incident, Manu Chao and Kings of Leon. Saturday evening's headliner is the Police, in their first major festival appearance since reuniting.

On a sad note, the festival's first fatality was confirmed to be a 25-year-old man from Kentucky. It was the sixth death in the festival's six-year history.
And now its time to say goodnight.

there was absolutely no sign of any type of dissatisfaction on the crowds end. and personally i thought that was our best MOW ever,

anyone who wanted to hate on that was just...i dunno looking for something to judge.

the audience was with us and that is all that counts. rock critics hate jam bands anyway and that was clearly the hat we were wearing for this weekend.

not to mention that was his backhanded "stay in your place nigga" remark with "these guys are hip hop what the fuck do they know about dylan"

shakes head.

im shocked cause this whole time jon has been a friend (this is the same jon prince had thrown out of the park during that miles davis sign of the time new years show in 1988.)

normally he has been supportive of this entire unit. so this is coming from left field.

it becomes a problem when you veer away from your corner....that is him judging me.

its like HELLO CRITICS!!!! you fuckers wanna always write about my 60,000 record collection!!! but let me actually show the evidence of studying those records for near 40 years and it becomes a problemo?

that show was bulletproof believe you me. in 90 mins we showed a range that no rap gr---NO GROUP has shown ---even his beloved Police which gave an (at that) satisfactory and quiet performance.

mofos trip me out---i just read the coachella review in blender and fuckers said the same shit (worst cover to the roots for doing the entire "masters of war" to "star spangled banner") and then turn ghostface's lackluster performance (was NOT clear on the mic, forgot lyrics, breath control and communication skills was "eh at best" and praised that shit to the high heavens) in a festival highlight.

i guarantee you: he didn't want to like it. cause critics hate musicians who think they are smarter than them.

It's funny how all the critics praised the hell out of Fishscale and didn't really jump on Game Theory. Almost all the best of 06 lists had Fishscale but no GT - it makes me wary of (non-hip hop) critics and their reliance on 'image' and perception rather than the album itself... and this is coming from a huge ghost fan.

Fishcale was a scattered album with moments of brilliance, GT was just brilliant all the way through. But ghost has that image of quirky street character that is very easy to latch onto in a review...

man, continue doing u. critics are just people who wish they can do, what the artist(s) do on any given night. critics are just over hyped. if the music/art or whatever move u, who cares what the critics say.

i say "don't listen to the naysayers unless they have informative critiques, and not just going to tell u....yo, man, u suck, negative energy, and we definitely dont need more negative energy in the world...

keep bringing ur musicianship to the people, because the right ones are listening!

just a snippet. in fact i would kind of get tired out when i went to roots shows back in the day and they'd play about five seconds of "smells like teen spirit" into five seconds of some other song. it made you unable to get into the groove and listen to a song. it was more like flipping through the radio. when covering a song, i think it's GOOD to "cover" the song.

Excellent rebutle sir. I actually read all of his reviews and he praised the police performance, and trashed yours. i laughed my ass off, as i have heard nothing but mediocre reviews and kind of lackluster performances of there reunion tour so far, and definitely have never heard the police described as "experimental". i'm sure you guys killed it, and can't wait for RTB in SF, since i missed you guys in Richmond a couple weeks ago. Great work can't for more shows and more music.

I think you guys are getting more and more interesting by the day.

I think y'all should continue to go hard (Tariq was on the verge of NNN...in that recent interview posted in the Lesson*) on cats that ain't even bothering to connect nann dot beyond "Everybody Say HOOOOOOOOOO", especially in this the plastic age of not just HIP-HOP, but the music industry period.

To paraphrase Chuck D.: "the suckers are simple and plain"
(see my "HIP-HOP TALKS TO MUCH...DOES TO LITTLE"** post in the Lesson)

Keep up the good work.

Seriously, anyone seeing crappy quality youtube video of just the Masters of War cover couldn't possibly write what he did without having some kind of fucked up grudge.

You guys covering Bob Dylan sucks in the same way that Hendrix covering Bob Dylan did.

I figured i should ask, cuz I know that in some previous post ?uest explicitly didnt want material from the current tour posted. Presumably this was to prevent spoilers, and to keep keep the element of surprise for people who catch their live shows. The Roots put so much effort into keeping their live shows fresh, and ?uesto does so much for us that I didnt want to cross anyone.

The video link can be found here: http://blogs.heraldtimesonline.com/jbj/?p=478

The link is still active though the video is huge (1.3 GB), and if this is inappropriate, the moderators can remove the link.
Enjoy!
