"Poll question: let's gopher Delph"
Sat Jul-16-05 09:11 AM by qoolquest

okay.
the nyc concert review almost scared the shit outta me cause we put so much effort into following high voltages's advice on "winging it" like the very successful essence fest some weeks back (i was calling songs out hoping mofos remembered shit)---shit almost got ruined by that first post about the great 20 buck mystery

"panic" had a nice run. might think of a way to flip it. nowadays i only use it to stall in case there is a problemo with my monitor wedge and i need a few seconds to fix something (we jam a long time before riq starts first verse)

"what they do" makes sense to bring in since we have a guitar player to freak spanky's part--so no need to list that.

we had a laugh in rehersal as riq got mad at himself for saying so many cotdamn words when he wrote shit like "DYWM"; and "sections"

"hypnotic" seems like a loooongshot. but being as though we are doing one the the most important gigs of our career since lincoln center (we doing philly's kimmel center---our version of carnegie....we will be the first rap negros in the spot and they letting us get away with murder: orchestra, deer hoof and fishbone as openers--) and i wanna pull a good 10 never heard befoe classics out the closet.

hypnotic could provide a BIG moment if a certain someone came out and sat at his rhodes. shit, just shock value alone would make it worth it. even though everyone anticipating him, no one's expecting to see him for a long time. Niggas would lose it. maybe could even go into that version of "break you off" that people were scrambling to download.

we doing philly's kimmel center---our version

not to rain on your parade quest but Thee Phantom out of philly was the first EVER hip-hop act to rock Kimmel Center. And that was soon after it opened.

www.theephantom.com
www.myspace.com/theephantom

Yeah I might consider going to this kimmel center affair if yall bring out some bangers off DYWM, and Illadelph. I didnt live in philly during yall grind period (got here in 99), so I missed the album release events and such during the early days. BRING IT BACK! FOR OLD TIME'S SAKE!

oh yeah for the record I would want to hear all of those songs with the exception of 'no alibi' it wouldnt be right without malik. Concerto is definitely #1 tho, Push up ya lighter would be crazy too but only if bahamadia was involved.

Ouch! I get it. Roots >>> Phantom. Was a fan up to that point. However the case may be, young Tec is correct. First ever Hip-Hop artist to perform at the Kimmel Center in 2002-2003. Ja-Rule was even there after that. LOL! Not too much space between the bush and the swelled head I see.

Man. I was all ready to call up my printer and get some "vengefuljawn" and "Dissed by ?uest" t-shirts printed up. Next I thought you were gonna tell me that Thought was the first cat to rock a widows peak. Then I would've had to crash thru the Kimmel's glass ceiling and do some Run's House shite in the middle of your set. LOL.

It's all good.

Yeah Phantom performed in front of a sold out crowd at the Kimmel Center .. and did his thing too. Maybe you should check out one of the SOLID PHILLY ACTS, he's definetly better than most that are doing it locally.

I doubt he was headline status as the Roots are going to be, he could give the details better than I can.

He performs with a live orchestra, and it's pretty dope. Alot of the live strings are incorporated into his recordings. His website - http://www.theephantom.com is under construction, however he has music on myspace -

I actually performed at the Kimmel's Summer Solstice Celebration in 2002 and 2003. I rocked with a few members of the Philly Orch. and Chamber Orchestra of Philly in the Perelman Theater for an hour. Shockingly, they told me I drew more people than Itzhak Perelman himself at the same event an hour later. We may have actually worked with some of the same people. Gloria Justen who co-composes with/for me was supposed to do the Jay-Z Unplugged with you. She also records a lot for Larry Gold.

The stuff on the myspace site is a little elementary compared to what Gloria and I are writing now from the ground up. Also, the "A Million MC's" was played by a gentleman named John Levis who plays for PhilDanco and Penn. Ballet.

Not trying to run this in the whole but I found some archived press. My name is in there somewhere. LOL. Lots of turnover at the Kimmel since 2002. The cat who booked me there is named Tom Warner and he's still with them.

I NEED to be @ this show, what's the date?

And you HAVE to bring Norwood & Angelo on stage with the band to do a song...on some medley type shit...

Do snippets of "Rockstar", "Sunless Saturday", "Bonin in the Boneyard" segue into "Cholly" (for the big booty hoes), "Lemon Meringue" closing with "Properties of Propaganda" (have Riq do Busta's rap in that tune) BAM!! Muhfucka's would be losing it...

In response to Reply # 0

I've been to about 25 or so Roots shows dating back to right before TFA dropped, and think that unquestionably my favorite show opener is when they set it off with Respond React (saw that at Lincoln Center). Here's a ysi link to what I'm talking about:
hxxp://s42.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2TT70TZS36X4C1NP0DQKB3VXJ7

It's just ridonc how you (?uestlove) switch up the beat thrice; especially with that sorta nonsensical mumbling before you switch the beat and Riq starts with his, "I'm just a lyricist a chemist of the hemp." Similarly, the "watch the sound of they dynasty chant...", that beat switch up is nuts. I love those keys.

So i vote for opening with this. It is epic and energizing and I think a great way to set it off. I wish I could go to this. Damn.

I also gotta give my vote for the version of You Got Me where Ris does his, "Yo, can I trust her? Is she my chick for real? (and then y'all pause.) then Riq screams you know relationships get ill and you do your quasi heavy metal break down only to abruptly switch it back up to either the so fresh and so clean beat or the normal one (I prefer the normal one though).

On the topic of You Got Me, I think it's done best when y'all speed it up a bit and Riq pauses at different places that normal. Here's my example from memory:

Somebody told that this planet was small,
we used to live in the,
same building on the same floor,
and never met before until I'm,
over seas on tour,
and peeped this ethiopian,
queen from philly taking,
classes abroad,
she's studying,
film, photo-flash focus record,
says she's working on a flic could my click do the score,
says she's loved my show in paris at <whatever>,
and that I,
stepped off the stage and took a,
piece of her heart

Anyway, not sure if that is at all clear but I vote for doing YGM in this fashion.

i'd have to say the best opener ive seen in the past 10 years were 1) when they opened with respond/react, but playing motherless child behind it, and 2) when they used to open with without a doubut, comin thru the crowd with cowbells and stuff. anybody remember those free lil shows they was doin in record stores and stuff back then?? i know that was back in 96....

Def the openings with cowbells through the crowd were dope.

What about when they opened in slow motion; I remember ?uest putting on white gloves or something and he did it all exaggerated-like and ultra slow.

They're just a really good live show is what it boils down to.

Probably my least favorite of their openings is the newer one with web->boom or web->whatever that tipping point song is. I mean, still incredible no doubt, but I prefer the TFS era openings.

Come to Edinburgh guys! (before Aug 24th please).

Was gonna post this somewhere else, but as that kimmel performance has come up, anyone have the video of this?

I did have the audio but it cut off halfway through web. Would love to see the whole performance.

Also if you were to perform hypnotic, I think riq should use the lyrics from 'the notic' coz think that some of the best stuff he's written.

I didn't know if you posted this by mistake or just wanted to use it as an example. Either way that shit was bananas, especially when they switched to the Burn beat before the Malik B verse. That show as whole was sick. Perhaps their Best DC appearance not withstanding the epic ?uestless show in 94/95(?), I've been hearing about for years, where Rhazel beatboxed the whole show through. Now, I would kill to get my hands on that tape!

not for nuthin' quest, but i wanna know two things right 'bout now:

1)when is this jawn gonna go down?

2)and who do i hafta make a deal with to get tix?

now with that said, i say that the one classic roots joint that should
be done is(drum roll): CONCERTO OF THE DESPERADO!!!!!!!

that joint has cellos and arias all up in it...

the new sig-
