I've been to about 25 or so Roots shows dating back to right before TFA dropped, and think that unquestionably my favorite show opener is when they set it off with Respond React (saw that at Lincoln Center). Here's a ysi link to what I'm talking about: hxxp://s42.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2TT70TZS36X4C1NP0DQKB3VXJ7
It's just ridonc how you (?uestlove) switch up the beat thrice; especially with that sorta nonsensical mumbling before you switch the beat and Riq starts with his, "I'm just a lyricist a chemist of the hemp." Similarly, the "watch the sound of they dynasty chant...", that beat switch up is nuts. I love those keys.
So i vote for opening with this. It is epic and energizing and I think a great way to set it off. I wish I could go to this. Damn.
I also gotta give my vote for the version of You Got Me where Ris does his, "Yo, can I trust her? Is she my chick for real? (and then y'all pause.) then Riq screams you know relationships get ill and you do your quasi heavy metal break down only to abruptly switch it back up to either the so fresh and so clean beat or the normal one (I prefer the normal one though).
On the topic of You Got Me, I think it's done best when y'all speed it up a bit and Riq pauses at different places that normal. Here's my example from memory:
Somebody told that this planet was small, we used to live in the, same building on the same floor, and never met before until I'm, over seas on tour, and peeped this ethiopian, queen from philly taking, classes abroad, she's studying, film, photo-flash focus record, says she's working on a flic could my click do the score, says she's loved my show in paris at <whatever>, and that I, stepped off the stage and took a, piece of her heart
Anyway, not sure if that is at all clear but I vote for doing YGM in this fashion.
