"f!#@ the police..."

peace and light.
wow.
probably not the political statement to make when u only have 45 min. to do a set and not be able to explain.
BADU EXPLAINS..........

''otherside of the game'' (1997 BADUISM ) is chpt.1 of the ''f ''the police saga.
its a story about a woman who struggles w/ the reality of her boy friend saling dope
to make it and give her the life he feels she deserves ( shes pregnant ).
Up to this point we've never heard from the woman's perspective concerning the ''game''. NWA called her ''the dopeman's bitch'' in 1988. This song and its video broke the game down in 4 min. and some change......(police play dirty / see '' otherside'' video ) directed by e. badu.

''DANGER'' (2003 WWUG) is chapter 2 of the ''f'' the police saga.
its a continuation of '' otherside of the game ''.
in this story the baby has come , the fear and love is penetrating thru this sisters words,
and the life ,once glamorous is now manifesting into the nightmare that haunted her in
''otherside''...''WHATCHA GONNA DO WHEN THEY COME FOR YOU?''
the block has gotten really hot... if you will. There was no video for this song ... it was off of an E.P.
(sounds like im tryin to pitch a movie. lol )

DANGER
lyrics: CAUSE YOU KNOW THEY (cops ) GOT THE
BLOCK ON LOCK
THE TRUNK STAY LOCKED
GLOCK ON COCK
THE BLOCK STAY HOT
MIGHT HAVE TO FLUSH THE YEYO

I am a charecter , as i am in most of my songs.
i am a writter who enjoys telling a story from all sorts of perspectives....
these are real sittuations from my perspective .
its important to me to give it to ya'll like that.
one thing i find uncomfortable is being misunderstood.
but thats life. lol.

in my show i break the game down in 16 bars:

1. THEY bring drugs to yo hood
2. yo man sale'em
3. ya'll get payed
4. yo baby see that
5. now you got the block on lock
6. but police play dirty
7. somethin go wrong
8. collect call on yo phone
9. now yo man in jail
10. now you got to move to the trap
11. now YOU got to boil the water
12. now you like crack
13. in another 10 years
14. yo baby's (your child) in the game
15. and they give him 25 to life
16. cause the game dont change

so yes...FUCK THE POLICE.
who is the police?
not the officers who have given thier lives on 911.
not yo uncle Micheal.
not LATIFAH's pops ( who happens to be an x-cop).
...they all WORK for THE POLICE.

representing the HOOD ,

i'm erykah badu

>indeed
>and we have to start where the sick live...

yknow, the stuff cats dont rap about, or dont show in the videos.
let's say the stuff that isnt glamorous, or doesnt add directly to one's aura of invincibility, is indeed the bare facts.

the fact that these dispositions get imprinted into the genome.
if you fuck around, and decide not to make things better...your kids are bound to fall victim.

there goes another generation.

as long as we as a society believe in the quick fix, the immediate gratification, we'll never step back and give ourselves a chance to heal.

it's funny, people will destroy relationships, health, lives over some white shit...
on some get high shit.

but if they just sat down, in complete quiet, and just absolved their minds of all that's around them, and focused on "nothing"

there is NOTHING that will take you higher.

no chemical compound is that potent, because we are composed of it all.
great post!

peace,
-ram

....cause i was chatting with some friends the other night talking about "the state of rap music right now"....

one said all this ice chasing, cris sipping, cl driving is causing the youth to lose focus....
another guy responded by saying....."u ever thought that the ice chasin, cris sippin may encourage and inspire the youth...hell if 50 did it...i can get out of here"??
i don't totally agree with him on that, ,but i was jsut curious as to the role of music....ie what role is it playing now and where do u think it needs to go

music will always play a part in shaping the minds of our youth. HOWEVER, we as the adults (& parents) MUST live by example. If you are dropping it like its hot, throwing the "pie" around or glorifing the ways of those in the game via music, television, movies, etc. around the youth without counteracting that with positive images and outlets, you (we) are asking for failure. Of course the POLICE will have the block on lock... We ain't controlling shit... we can't even keep our block clean, let alone on lock. How many of you know your neighbors, let alone go to bat for them? Unify the minds, unify the nation...

I grew up in the cypress projects in brooklyn with drugs, gun violence and death all around me, however i did not succomb to that madness. Half the brothers and some of the sisters i know got 33 to life for some bullshit they did as a teen. And they thought they were just emulating that which was displayed on tv and throughout music.

Now I ask, what are we going to do?

It takes a nation of millions....

In response to Reply # 11

That make it almost impossible for black people to climb out the whole we've been placed in. To say the government is the police might be a little simplistic, because to even be a part of the government you have to have an economic base. So maybe not the government, but the people controlling who gets to be a part of the government. The people with $, who are too smart to even put there faces in front of the bullshit that goes on in the name of protecting the interest of the people.

the sharing ?uest and e are doing reminds me of the stories my father use to tell of how Ellington and Basie and other cats would come through town and they would just chill with my father and other local musicians after the show breaking shit down. yeah.
of course this online experience does not beat the personal exprience I stated above but it will do for me.

technology can be a wonderful thing sometimes.

1. THEY bring drugs to yo hood

"The War on Drugs" is the biggest line of propaganda there is... Okay, maybe second to the "War on Terror"... But anyway, it's not a war on drugs, it's a war on PEOPLE. And it's a vicious cycle... THEY bring the drugs into the poor communities, the poor people buy the drugs, then the people start wildin out, Then THEY use the peoples drug money to bring in even more drugs, which the makes people wild out even more, which destroys the property value of the community, and on and on and on.............

I read about all of this on a former LAPD officer's website, I'ma try to find a link and post it later...

number one is being left out of the equation.. sad when the people who vow to serve and protect are more corrupt than the people they are arresting.. talking about issues isnt a direct attack on police everywhere..

at any rate.. i appreciate your explanation badu.. in the end i dont think you owe anyone one.. but it does help to have a chance and venue to explain what you mean.

context and looking beneath the surface is of great importance and almost a requisite. I doubt she would make a potentially blanket statement like "F The Police" without reason and with the malicious intent of offending those who were not offenders, if you will. Understand, the term "police", in my opinion, is a metaphor for a larger thinking and mindset that can infilitrate damn near any profession and when used to pillage and oppress *anyone*, must be rebelled against. All members of law enforcement are not "bad" but as African Americans, we tend to encounter an all too familiar sect of those who ain't shit but I digress...lol!

I applaud her for taking the time to explain what could've been a knee jerk detraction from a dynamic show but for those that "get" you, it probably wasn't even necessary...lol.

Just don't take it out the show. I need to chant it next week in Charlotte!!!

now for a trivial tangential question

why is WU considered to be an EP only, given that with ten tracks (even if two of those are interludes) it's pretty much a full-length?

what was the idea behind it's release as opposed to a third studio album proper?

Didn't see the big deal either. Actually I heard people cheering when she said it. It was not taken out of context at all. People understand the hustle. Good show, btw.

but its not our home its a supermarkt-male, without earth, without sky,
and earth and sky teach us the cycle of this life as-a human experiment ah no i wanted 2 say as a human-experience
there is sun and there is rain, thats the cycle up and down but we can skip this cycle
zap/skip on: FORWARD-move-have some work 2 do some de-programming- constantly growing, fusing the experiments and the moods with other views and colour, fusion is like percusion nu sound -nu view,
AND (diiferent) options are like navigations
for not loosing your mind

Iīm a warrior cause i (try) 2 trancendent war
no I DO Do
do dodo do dadada
and if I have 2 scat it like billie holliday
singing makes us believe (cause it comes straight out of our soul)

You can't be a good writer without being misunderstood sometime. A listener's perspective always trumps the writer's intentions. What you intend for listeners to hear isn't always what they get from their perspective. But that's also beautiful because sometimes it makes you see things in your own words that you hadn't realized were there. At the very least, it makes you think more about what you write.

50. "but these motherfuckers are all choosing to sell drugs"
In response to Reply # 0

when is the 'fuck the drug dealers' song going to come out? there are lots of people who struggle hard to make ends meet *without* selling drugs, the motherfuckers who sell drugs often do so as much to buy material things they don't need (chains, cars, etc) as for survival (in fact, I'd argue there are more motherfuckers doing it for fancy shit then doing it just to eat), AND selling the drugs fucks the hood up something awful (already dysfunctional people get hooked, can't raise their kids, spread disease (from sharing needles and/or prostitution to feed their habit), motherfuckers settle disputes with gunplay, and so on.

i mean, biggie's mom worked very hard to give him everything he *needed* and he himself admitted he started selling drugs to get things he *wanted* (an extra pair of expensive shoes, etc). and his story is far from rare. the police aren't making motherfuckers act like this. and when in the course of selling the shit to get fresh kicks and a new ride they kill someone's son? then what?

AND there are a whole generation of sistas in jail for being in house when it got raided or smuggling for their man. we're fucking killing ourselves, then making songs about it. and it ain't from a critical perspective. not at all.

I'm glad you brought up this song, because that song has already bothered the shit out of me. it reeks of defeatism. if we came out of goddamn slavery with nothing and survived, there's no way in hell somebody in 2005 can convince me that they 'have to' sell crack. bullshit.

...then you missed the motherfucking point.

even though when you pushed that shit, you are fucking over all the mothers who have to raise their kids in the environment you're making worse by shooting each other, selling poison to your own, and generally not giving a damn about the community's advancement because you see what you can get out of slinging them thangs.

edit: Also note that I am fully aware of the CIA's complicity in the drug trade, the history of crooked cops, etc. But someone, somewhere makes a choice to sell rocks (there are isolated stories of cops forcing people to push the product, like one dealer's account from the Bronx (long story), but the emphasis is on "isolated"). Why do we continue to be apologists about all this?

edit 2: the song that set me off was 'otherside', way back when 'baduizm' first dropped, but that was way before this site existed, so there was never an outlet to express my thoughts on this directly to E. Badu or fellow supporters of her (do know that I am a supporter, with a disagreement/difference of opinion in this specific area).

I feel you, believe me I do... but one day I tried to feel these brothers instead of seeing them through my often critical eyes, and honestly it became a little more clear. True, big sold for things he "wanted", and the next brother on the corner selling for street cred, or because he just dont no any damn better, why-because his momma didnt know any better. Unfortunately many of us are still stuck in this cycle that began when they let our grandparents out of shacks with no money, no land and (more importantly) no education or sense of true self worth and love. Some of our people (by divine strength) overcame it, but inevitably some didnt. ANd you cant teach your baby anything that you yourself dont know.
Sure we dont HAVE to sell dope, or become rappers or ball players but truth is that still in 2005 we got to work thrice as hard to get the same outcome as the frat boy next door who's momma bought him a car on his 16th birthday or the business woman living good because she was left 100 acres of farm land from her grand parents....

what does it say about an environment if people feel thats the only way to make ends meet?

In response to Reply # 50

SOME PEOPLE HAVE NO IDEA.

Nobody realizes that people are in many cases forced into these situations. If you've had any sort of felony it's nearly impossible to get any legal regular job. There's a question on all job applications that says "HAVE YOU EVER BEEN CONVICTED OF A FELONY???". I've seen a friend get fired because he lied on this. So lying isn't an option all the time with this.

9 out of 10 times that puts these guys out of the legit job game. Now if you have a hook up (which I know brothers constantly looking for) you may get around this, or you can do the day labor thing (which requires some previous knowledge/experience of a trade). But everyone doesn't know someone that owns a business or can hook them up with an under-the-table job.

So it's a trap. You grow up fucked up and make a mistake at a young age so your fucked out of a legit job. One of my homeboys (locked up now for something else) his pops pulled him into a bank robbery in which they were caught giving him his first felony... he just wanted to help his dad you know?) Do you know how many brothers have no choice but to find some other means of supporting themselves and their families??? A legal regular job IS NOT AN OPTION for alot of brothers.

Man, I swear this pisses me off. One of my good friends goes through this over and over. He's in jail now due to this bullshit. And when he comes out it'll be the same drill. We'll be out trying to find him a under the table job, which after MONTHS of hard looking he may find, but it will pay minimum wage, which everyone knows you cannot support yourself off minimum wage in a major city. And if you have and sense of pride you don't wanna completely live off of women and asking for fucking change.

When you get hungry, and you can't get a regular job, if you have survival instincts your gonna do something to save yourself. Most guys don't WANT to sell drugs, they do it because their options are limited and they're fucking hungry. "Damn I need a fucking cheesburger I'm hungry as fuck. I can't get a regular job, so I gotta do something."

So yeah you have guys that sell dope because they want things, but TRUST AND BELIEVE every dope dealer is not a baller and is not rich and not doing to get rich. These guys are struggling to survive. Some of you here have this distorted idea that all guys that sell dope are fucking rich ass ballers... NOT TRUE... THAT IS COMPLETE BULLSHIT. Most of the so-called ballers have multiple jobs and hustles (legal and illegal) and work their asses off in all different directions to have money like they do. But most people that deal drugs are STRUGGLING to get by day to day and going through more shit than most of us here in internet-land can fathom.

I'm not a dope dealer because I don't have to (I have a clean record, and am intelligent guy and have things going for myself), but I've got friends doing this in neighborhoods all over LA and Southern Cali to SURVIVE and EAT. Everyone wants a legit job but it's not an option for most.

Man, I feel Erykah all up and around with this stuff. I know women that are out there with their man hustling and riding with him day and night. I SEE it, I know chicks that be out there making money to feed their children and keep a roof over their head, I seen a lil 12 year old boy making more money than every one else on the whole block, his moms AND pops nowhere in his life. He's out there surviving on his own. These are people without options struggling to stay above water. Man some of ya'll have no idea how real this is.

In response to Reply # 55

how many people 'accidentally' catch a felony? sure, you can be in the wrong place/wrong time, but a lot of people are making deliberate choices that lead to that first felony, like your partner that decided to go on the bank robbery. that's not some shit you help your dad with. period. you don't just get 'pulled in' as if you're some type of rag doll. when you're pulled, you can pull away or let yourself get pulled.

i'm no 'pull yourself up by your bootstraps' type of dude. but i refuse to believe 95% of the people who say they were 'forced' to sell drugs. some people have exceptional circumstances. but most people are freely choosing to do it. and i think it's a fucked up choice.

got a felony? can't work at mickey d's? that doesn't make selling drugs your only option. you could sell bootleg CDs, t-shirts, incense sticks, boosted Polo's, there's damn near a million things you can sell other than drugs. painting, plumbing, begging for spare change even...come on now. it's never that black and white.

YOUR POINT IS????????????????????????

So is ya man locked up from the Part 3 of other side of the game?
Do you have 2 blood brothers doing time for thugishness, gun charges or drug pedeling...

Oh you've experienced this in the glam your call artistry.

I so respect you for your perspective but I'm finding myself lacking the reality of taking your bebe to the prison at 5 am after driving all night since you got off work to see you honey while you slept for 2 hrs in the car while the busses of women from the city roll on in and you loose you place and have to wait and it now like 10 am and you aint seen your man yet while you got 20$ of quaters in you pocket for snacks and a bill or two for a poloriod.

Ms. Badu I love you but you just seem to celestially pimp a portion of the game that you can or want to notice...

WHAT ABOUT THE WHOLE STORY!?!?!?

You are close to glamorizing something that is heart wrenching for many and deeper that a part 1, 2 or 3 of songs you capitolize off of...maybe this is that misunderstanding that is an issue for you....but try to shine on all sides then...and listen harder cause we both know that talk is cheap!

aaight
then?!

And to take it further...you talk bout fuck the police...but when is the last time you were racially profiled and pulled over while driving in a hood not your color in a car that aint suppose to be yours?
That ish happened to me this weekend on my way to the beach...

So if you gonna NWA it and talk ya fuck the police ish...have some solid footing sis.

respect.

Sis-I hear what you're saying and Im not just speakin bout Badu but all Blk artists who speak in the tradition. We are a collective folk (in the tradition). When Aretha Franklin sang RESPECT, no one asked her to show dog bites on her feet and fire hose rippings on her back. She was speaking on the times of her ppl. The Blk artist speaks on behalf of the conditions. The Police (system) doesn't give a got damn about a nigga wit money. I think her (Badu's) credibility (in this case) is the fact that she uses her music as a tool of truth and not propaganda. I've never been personally attacked by the po, but have had disputes with em'-I still say Fuck em-cause I know what they do to my folk and wd and probably will do ta me.

just my two tho.

Instead of addressing it like that, intellegently like you have here, Ms. Wright wanted to take it to her promotional post on Okayactivist to reply. Again yes I understand where your coming from but as far as I see "fuck the police" has just become a cliche for entertainers. Who's the last entertainer that got fucked with by the police on some no cause ish? Yeah they the ones locked up. Just cause? Maybe not but they aint up here and in the paper talking bout fuck the police either. And what about the candy coat...the Im not talking bout this police and that police...then what police you talkin bout? Get specific like Pac on a deposition tape...dirty police...um the police that profile a nigga. Whatever. That post wasnt bout the police it was bout "the other side of the game" and whatever was the new reason to flip mode on some new and improved fuck the police shit. It doesn't move me as coming from a real place...pardon me for that. I aint buying it even though I can say fuck the police the C.O.'s the P.O's the damn judges the Rockefeller laws...wtf ever.

In response to Reply # 0

or intellectualized. I feel that way because everyone is going to have a different view and perspective of what is written. Sometimes what you write can be interpreted way deeper by a listener and the writer themselves never even thought of it that way. Its like when you read a book its left up to your imagination to make the description of the characters in the story. That's why people get mad when books get turned into movies, sometimes it fucks it up.

Think about Bob Marley's song Crazy Ballhead. What is that song about? I've heard several people saying the song is about racist white people. But if you know about Rasta terminology anyone who isn't a rasta is known as a ballhead or someone who doesn't believe in their faith. No one knows for sure what its about, but its still a great song.

Sometimes its better if its left to the imagination, figure the shit out on your own. I like to believe that art has its own... identity so to speak. Once its out there, its no longer yours.

Like with Michael Jackson, people are talking about they can't listen to his songs anymore because of his trial and history with children. But are you really gonna tell me Don't Stop Til You Get Enough wasn't the shit?

So sometimes I think explaining shit just kind of defeats the whole purpose. I love Badu's music and I do like Otherside of the Game and Danger and buy her shit as long as its dope. I just think somethings are better left unsaid. Both for you and my benefit.

There use to be a time when observation was enough for one to respond, reflect, or express how they view an issue or situation but this notion that I must BE the drug dealer or BE profiled or BE the woman waiting on the man who is in prison to be able to say what I think or feel is just BS. Empathy is always valid in my opinion.

Be it that I nor most on this thread do not know Ms Badu personally, I think its difficult to measure her intergrity in this manner. Is art always about the motivation of the artist OR to motivate the observer or just a simple observation of what the artist sees or feels and doesn't care how the observer takes it in. I don't know.

I just know that I can start my revolution in any manner I feel, through words, protest, boycotts, song, etc and it doesn't have be seen in your view to make it valid.

We need to be careful of the classism that is taking over the black community. Is this the next revolution?

Blind to the ways of mankind
God is smiling on you but he’s frowning too
Cause only God knows what you go through
You grow in the ghetto, living second rate
And your eyes will sing a song of deep hate
The places you play and where you stay
Looks like one great big alley way
You’ll admire all the number book takers
Thugs, pimps, pushers and the big money makers
Driving big cars, spending twenties and tens
And you wanna grow up to be just like them
Smugglers, scrambles, burglars, gamblers
Pickpockets, peddlers and even pan-handlers
You say I’m cool, I’m no fool
But then you wind up dropping out of high school
Now you’re unemployed, all null ’n’ void
Walking around like you’re pretty boy floyd
Turned stickup kid, look what you done did
Got send up for a eight year bid
Now your man is took and you’re a may tag
Spend the next two years as an undercover fag
Being used and abused, and served like hell
Till one day you was find hung dead in a cell
It was plain to see that your life was lost
You was cold and your body swung back and forth
But now your eyes sing the sad sad song
Of how you lived so fast and died so young

dude

I think it's needed. and true enough you have been using that phrase for a minute now. Sept 28th Chicago Congress Theatre was the first I heard it, and I thought it was politically correct but where people get it fucked up is when you don't explain it, Danger couldn't have a better Intro if you ask me still Love You gurl. and I'll see you Friday, and by the way I have a friedn who has been trying to contact Clearwater for Press passes for a week but none of his calls have been returned you think you can do something about that, he reallys wants to do a review of the show for his magazine.

i get what you are saying. the police have a love hate relationship with people. in certain situations, like when u are doing something bad and not tying to get caught; or when u got pulled over and you know it is because it is the end of the month and they are trying to make their quota then hell yeah f*ck the police. but when they are trying to catch murderers then of course i have mad respect.
in the context of the song you was singing and explaining at the concert it did make sense.

interesting when people decide to finally tune in.....

We need to be careful of the classism that is taking over the black community. Is this the next revolution?

Some things are better left unsaid. The tongue is a double head sword. The question is what are we going to do about the police, the answer, not a dang thang. Talk is cheap.. Shall we continue to talk.-- We sleep amongst Lions---We are the lost sheep----Who will rattle the bones in the valley while our people continue to shake our tail feathers...-----Bah Hum bug!!!

the socio-political statement it was making...at a specific time here in Los Angeles....It was a strong statement against an LAPD that had been traditionally hostile towards young Black men...it resonated because folks across the country had similar experiences...

I think the idea of F*ck the police doesn't really have the same impact or meaning as it did when it came into hip hop, and popular culture....It has to do with the balance of self-responsibilty..empowerment..doing what's constructive for one's community...no NWA didn't espouse all of those things, but the environment that existed when they said f*ck the police had Farrakhan, and other elements that were building so to speak..

go back even to the days of the Panthers...who dealt with the idea of arming themselves to protect their communities from the police...they talked about the "pigs" ...it was basiclly them saying f*ck the police.....BUT ...it was happening in a very revolutionary...Black power ...Do for self type of environment...

But today.....The idea of "THEY bring drugs into the community"... "THEY tell us to sell drugs" etc. It's not associated with Black empowerment..it's not associated with a hip hop environment that is about community building...it's not associated with an environment where Black leaders are empowering on a grass roots level....Now...today...F*ck the police is more of an excuse..than it's the revolutionary statement it was in the past..

We already know the rules of the game...it's a constant...so why not focus on how the INDIVIDUAL can impact his/her own life with actions that will benefit them...The same element that brought in the dope, has done a lot worse than that to us as a people...and we still continued to advance....Now all of the sudden the dope game is something that we are powerless against?? No way.

Had to make the Queen's post 100 long...

The police..

NO... NO-t the
Officers on the fed's stopwatch,
i'm talkin' Overseers, those who - are on the copwatch..
the boys in blue, they's really foot soldiers..
put in place to hold us, in cheque, while older
money, just gets older, cops actin' bolder..
the authority, got yer name and stats in a folder..

they come in all different forms, shapes and levels of corruption, just like us.. the 'common folk' they police..

YES... YES-terday I saw the
headline-
Black Man Shot
dead,nine-
times, by nine swine..
the block's thugs, pop slugs, like they got nine lives..
and...
3 nines will turn you upside down like 666..
how the HELL we get so sick, sick, sick?
why the hell we can't sell homes?
instead of selling your soul, or selling bones?
flatline, dial tone...
unarmed, but reaching for a cellphone..
lonely realities , for whom the bell tolls..

MAY BE.. MAY- we -BE
next in the innocent vic's obituary?
the next victim of a 'government dick' missionary..
Systematically intrinsic, within the inner city,
livin' as disciples of dominating divinity..
Capitalizing on the catastrophic cynergy
between man and beast, feast and famine..
crooks and cops, or crooked cops, that brandish,
mandated to hand us, death.. branded with badges and
vests.. who gon' hand the bandits a cheque?

C.? ---I. A.in't tryin' to F.-up, my B.I.,
but i can't try to be fly, with G's becomin' G.I.'s..

--that's kinda hot right there... but...

Casually, callously they cause many young casual-ties,
while we gradually, react savage, to the travesty
cuz back at the academy, the cavalry's minds get(washed)
in (white) tapestry,
lines get crossed,
oughta-matically,
when they Ought to be outlawed outright..
but tragically, we ain't got the power to outfight..

The people that govern the people that govern,
us.. they weaken the stubborn, plus.. lethally smother..
thus, Evil.lE. hover, like Black Moons, on drugspots..
in Black Helicopters, that duck down, and Buckshot(s)..
and why the fuck not? cuz it's not like there's
revolution brewing in the crack pot..
revolution's doing what the black man can-
not..
it's chillin' on a retreat on forty acre land plots..
the revolution, revolves around the globe,
in 360 degrees, of soundin' old..
the revolution will not be told..
the revolution has been SOLD...

undefine your understanding,
no boys and blue can protect you from THEIR planning..

13 minutes, 34 seconds..
