"who would you pick as 2nd full time MC for the Roots?"

for me, it's got to be Mos Def, for two reasons:

1 - he obviously wants a full band (see Black Jack Johnson)
2 - double trouble

who would y'all pick?

"when's the last time you heard a funky diabetic?"

so i don't see why a new emcee would have to be philly-bred. just curious.

but I could be way off base. But of you know how regional accents and flow vary a lot in hip-hop. It seems like the philly emcees from the roots all brought a similar flavour to the table. But, I guess it doesn't have to be that way.

i mean, yes, BT has a different style than other emcees, but i never attributed that to his being from SP. i respect your opinion, i just never thought of it that way.

For the simple fact it wouldn't be somethin people would expect, and he would spit some super clever, informative rhymes.

i mean not that that matters, just saying at the rate of ages of successful rappers these days, doesn't it just seem a bit odd to bring a 40 year old rapper as a NEW member? (if he'd been with the group all along it'd be different).

i mean just my two cents, feel free to disagree.

When I listen to him, I don't think about his age at all. I just hear his words and his passion behind what he sayin. His age never come into play, but even if it did, I think it would only help. Cuz he got the experience of an emcee and just life itself, so lyrically, he'll have a whole lot more to offer. imo

before people start calling him "too old?"
i mean i'm not disrespecting him at all, he's a very talented artist, and if he joined the roots i'd still buy the album with sincerity, but coming INTO the group at age 40 i think might make him vulnerable. i would still buy the shit, but i think the everyday listener wants to hear a new young addition, specifically when we're talking rappers (instrumentalists for some reason seem to last longer in the public eye... look at the red hot chili peppers, but then look at slick rick. dude is still a legend, but that's just it).

wouldn't really feel right with anyone other than Malik B or Dice.

other than those 2, i wouldn't mind seeing Jean Grae become fulltime. possibly Skillz, but i'm more interested in him as a solo artist.

he wouldn't be an emcee so to speak but i really dug the vibe when ML was singing soul for them. They sounded so ful. I really really wish ML was a fulltime root. He'd be a perfect edition. Sometimes i felt he interupted BT but then again thats just speculation.

This is going to sound crazy, but my vote goes for Kweli. Hear me out. The man is an incredible emcee, you can't dispute that whether or not you like his beats. Mos Def is incredible, but the Roots have moved on beyond the Double Trouble era. Common is talented, but will not be able to hold his own with Thought when it comes to the Roots' beats and Thought's flow. Common needs a specific style or he sounds lost. Kweli, on the other hand, is incredibly versatile and is comfortable with Thought's and the Roots' style. He's an incredible lyricist who will be able to provide quality rhymes to compliment Thought. Moreover, Kweli sounds better in group situations. He always sounds more at home with other people in the song. Plus, (this is a clincher) he's lost his direction nowadays. The man's still incredibly talented and the Roots could help him get back on track. They'll give him quality beats and the work he needs to hop back on. Moreover, if it's commercial attention he's after, he's going to get that so much more on Def Jam than on Koch.

More than anyone, though, I want Malik B back.

Since I think we should keep it in the Okayfamily and based on my review of their past performances, I would select one or all of these emcees:

1. SKILLZ (He has lots of charisma and he is one cool dude too! AND he is knows how to keep the party rocking)
2. Truck North (He seems to have history with The Roots and I enjoy his rapping style)
3. MOS Def (I am a fan of MOS and I think he and Black Thought flow really well together)

Good question...thanks for asking.

Asheru and Blue Black of the Unspoken Heard. I don't think they're together anymore, thought. I've got a couple of albums from '99 and 2000/2001-ish: "48 Months" and "Soon Come."

I highly recommend you listen and get both.

that kid that was on "somebody's gotta do it". sounds hungry as hell, and to me seems like he could fit that malik b complementary role. all those other guys are dope too but i don't think any of em would really fit that malik b role, which is that of a supporting character.

also, maybe jean grae. she can lyrically hold her own plus she's got the sense of humor. she was also coincidentally on "somebody's gotta do it"
