"It's sad that they're gonna put "Go" out as Com's next single"
Sun Apr-17-05 01:00 PM by Quez

You have jay biggin up Com on the Black Album as this super lyricist. EVERYONE heard it.

You got the tru-hop momentum of Kanye goin.

You got John Legend killin the airways with an acoustic song (and featured prominently on the album).

You have "The Corner" up to #3 on 106 & Park... which means the kids are ready for some next level heavy, positive, yet dope shit...

Not to mention that Jada & Twista both just scored with heavier themed tracks.

then they get a "club" track from Com.

Let me tell u somethin... there's nothin worse/cornier then when people not percieved as being able to make party music try to. It may get some spins... but that wont transfer to sales... cause Common talkin about "ass" is corny to the consumer.

Not to pigeonhole Com... but on another note... its not even a true representation of the album. That track is alone on the album. I think the kids should be givin a true window of what's on the album.

They could strategically use the momentum Com has going with Kanye, Legend, Jay, etc... to get the sales... and the shit could break thru on some "if you're a rap/hiphop fan, u have to have this". That's what i would go for.

Hopefully Kanye's presence can save "Go" and make it not come of as another "conscious" MC trying to make a club track.

and look at this "Kweli" single out right now...

*shakes head in disgust*

just my 50 Cents.

P.S. -- All this said... I think Go is dope... just not single material at all. I'd go with "Real People" or "They Say"

And now for a moment of PIFF:

"Like Mannie Fresh? YES! I'm into big bills
Big wheels BIG grill, wrist chill BIG deal!
I BIG deal... fifth steel givin 'em 8
Hollows dig in his face, that's what I call a tip drill" -- Malcom X

"Love Is" should be a nice single to come out with,
its my favorite track on the CD next to Pop's Reprise.

I however, don't consider BE to be a real album, its more like a demo or promotional disc that should be much longer.

Define "complete." It sounds like you have some idea that an album is supposed to be 15-25 tracks long...is that it? Not enough music for you? You deserve more? Com let you down?

Its too short how it is right now. Testify cuts off right when I'm getting into it. Common has to extend the length of the album and change around the beats before it comes out in June. I remember reading somewhere thaat Common stated he wasn't that mad that the album was leaked on the net because they didn't have all the songs.

and the reason why the roots did their biggest numbers with TFA and com did his biggest numbers with LWFC. erykah made "you got me" "contaigous" for folk looking to get into "positivity," but afraid to jump head-on. "the light" the same way. both records had the effect of leveling out something that a specialized group of people (read okayplayers) were already up on, and making it digetable for the masses.

as for 50, et al, it's the same thing: kids who want to identify themselves as street/hardcore/thugs--what have you--can stand behind the 50 superthug image. he translates "the streets" to the masses.

it just so happens that more people, for obvious reasons, want to identify themselves with the 50 side of the same coin.

but in the end of the day, an artist has to run the risk of being caricatured, because kids want to relate to something--doing so helps them shape how they view themselves.

I don't think his "presence" is gonna necessarily help Com sell.

To me, "Faithful" or "They Say" woulda been a much better choice.

john mayer is probably more popular than common, and i mean that. not as disrespect to common, but john has had MUCH more exposure. you've been very dismissive in this topic, i suggest you heed that john mayer being on the track (if only for a syllable) could do good things for getting some people aware of common. not every artist can gain a strong fan base solely on their own music/merits, though all should be given the chance. i agree that go shouldn't have been a single if you're comparing it to other potential songs on the album (i.e. be would have made a bloody fantastic single if they cut the part of the upright bass intro where he's playing around).

i just hope that niggas don't start making these 10 and 11 track albums on the regular. i'm not saying that they can't be good or anything and i definetly believe in quality over quantity, but by the same token, the roots who dropped a 10 track album (12 with the hidden joints) and common who's supposed to have 11,aren't really the type of artist that drop albums every year. therfore i kind of feel like they should hit the listener with at least 14 joints. i understand as artists of their caliber that they might not want to force inspiration, but with dudes taking 2 to 3 years to drop music,i feel like 13-14 quality songs aren't too much to ask for. oh,and by the way,i can't really comment on the ''BE'' album because i haven't heard it. i'm in cleveland and i don't know anybody with it. i have every intention of copping the offical joint on may 24th,but got damn,i need to hear something!!!

Any song on this album could be the next single except for Real People, despite it's exceptional lyrics, the beat just might not be a potential hit imo.

song sounds very cinematic/thematic...

i think radio would eat that song up right now the way things are goin. The played Game's "Dreams" in DC just as much as "How We Do" leading up to the album. People who have heard "Real People" are goin bananas over it. It has that jazzy shit, but it's hiphop to the core and lyrically potent but not preaching.

holla at us!

EDIT: who exactly do u expect to get hyped and buy the album based on "Go"? I mean, what demographic?

when you have this golden opportunity where people are finally starting to open up, this IS a very limp move. Faithful would be a great single, so would Real People, but at this point, i think with the situation we have now, he could actually come with a rapping-on-beat version of "Testify" and people would respond. maybe i'm incorrect, but Faithful or Real People would have definitely been two very safe and sure singles that would at least give people some substance in a way they'd accept and digest.

but at the same time WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU EXPECT? people bash a dude for 2 fucking years for being too soft and choosing abstinence and trying new things musically and being an artist not just another rapper, and people just rip him every day on these boards, making him the butt of erykah jokes etc, saying they wished he was "street" and "raw" (aka cunducted himself like your average rapper but with better punchlines). of-fucking-course he's going to come with a "doggystyle in the restroom" booty single after his lead-off "gritty" track.

I completely agree with you, to me "Go" is the worst track on the album, and its just so bizarre how to me the whole album is amazing, classic material, and then "Go" is just bullshit. It really brings the album down a whole lot. I'm glad Common put it at the beginning so I have 8 tracks to get over it!

Stop trippin' "Go" is a dope record. In terms of mainstream radio, don't try to tell me Corners has the legs for that shit. I give it a few more weeks on 106 before some stupid thuglove song by Omarion knocks that out of the tops spots. I love the lyrics for 'Corners' but could care less for that beat personally. After hearing the leaked tracks, "Go" seems like a good choice, but I would've been cool with "Faithful" or "Love is" too.

Botton Line, the label sees John Mayer & Kanye west on the track, they see marketing possibilities.

Record labels put out singles that they think will be commercially succesful. "Go" has the most commercial appeal so I think it's a good move. If people are gonna buy his cd just because of "go" at least they'll have the opportunity to listen to the other songs and appreciate them as well.

i understand big business and the need to move units... but this strategy is just dumb white people shit. As if John Mayer has ANYTHING to do with com's demographic. At the end of the day... what percentage of John Mayer's fans do u think would go buy Com's albums? Even if he was prominently used on the track? Com could do anywhere from 750K - 1.5M easily if labels understood who he is as an artist.

When it comes to hiphop/rap artists.

White people will buy whatever black people buy.
Black people will buy whatever isnt corny to them.

The only loophole to that is a group going BEP-corny and bypassing the black market. That is not somethin Com can or would do, hopefully.

Anyway... Com is on a pedestal right now with "Corners" out. By releasing "Go" you're going to take him off that pedestal. He'll go from "dope" to "corny" in two seconds... and they'll attribute any redeeming value of that track to Kanye... and Kanye's next album will have more momentum to go multiplat. That has been the case with all these other Kanye beats, video cameos.

this is nothing but the fuckin' truth here.

again: "go" is by no means a bad song (actually, it's dope), but it is totally not a good look for a second, "let's keep the momentum going" single.

can you hear it on a radio playlist? what the fuck is radio gonna do with it? ("and that was 'go,' y'all. next up: cassidy's 'i'm a hustler (remix)!'")

it does not bring anything to the table for anyone. (i.e., with "corners," com is bringing in new fans who are looking to identify with something "conscious"--"go" will not give them that, and the streets are gonna think it's corny, anyway.) the reason "the light" was, like, his only hit is because it provided an avenue for wannabe-bohos to feel like they a part of the team, on some, "hey ya'll, i'm 'deep' too!" and of course it was "sticky" (e.g., you couldn't get it out of your head), as well. but the imagery/association that people got from it--the "i'm conscious too!" factor--is what made it contagious, and everybody knows "stickiness" and "contaigousness" make shit catch on (see kayne supplying both elements to "corners" with the everyman u.s.a./averagejoebackpacker imagery steez, AND a catchy-ass chorus)

that's why i implore geffen/labelguy/com to seriously consider putting "faithful" ("real people" is redonkulous, but let's be real, people (pun intended), that shit would not fit into a radio format, it's too "jazzy") out as the second single instead. "faithful" is "sticky" (word to malcolm gladwell), and if the video is done correctly, it could push com over the top.

And if all else fails, go with "the food." but stay thee FUCK away from 106 & park/trl/hot 97, etc. with "go."

i really mean it.

you might be right about "Real People" being to jazzy... but I think if the radio dj's got behind it (which they are all over 25) it would breakthrough. Also, i like the whole "go against the grain" dopeness factor it would bring to radio. And it's short... 2:47.

I could hear "Faithful" on the radio... but i think it's a lil too heavy lyrically. Kanye's "Jesus Walks" was heavy thematically, but kinda playful lyrically. Com isnt funny or zany... so I dont see him being able to break thru with a religious themed track.

I would fuck with "Your World" as a single for Com too... after hearin how much burn the Game's "Dreams" got on the radio here.

It's funny how cats is talkin this revolution shit... and makin puppet moves.

i could say i understand the theory of relativiy but that doesnt make it so. Com can not do 1.5mil easily. There is no chance of that happening, IMO. He could do it over a long period of time with alot of hard work. When it comes to "Go" they are using Mayer not for Com's dem but for Mayer's dem. They are working for NEW fans, not the same ass holes on OKP who downloaded the album a month ahead of time and prolly wont buy it anyways.

>When it comes to hiphop/rap artists.

"on the count of three everybody head back to their fantasy"
- i wasnt aware that black people actually bought albums. When it comes to ANY music (that isnt something like go-go or screwed) white people are the majority consumers so you market to them (although sometimes THRU black people to get to them). So not only do they have Kanyeeze on this track but they got a white guy. Its enough to make a honkey go "humm?" and check it out at the store.

Actually, you might be surpised at who likes John Mayer. You also might be surprised at who likes Common, for that matter. I know John Mayer's not everybody's cup of tea, to be sure, but a lot of his music is potent. He's good at capturing a feeling. Also, he's got a monthly column in Esquire, in which he writes some pretty insightful things about music. Check that out if you get the opportunity.

is u mad?

We all know Com has meantioned that stuff, but that's not what he's projected to the public (read: his singles) thruought his career. Sometimes i wonder if there is anyone under 30 in charge of these terrible marketing schemes. "Corners" as a first single... brilliant... very thematic beat... takes people to another place when its on. Kanye killed it, Com killed it.

"Go" is dope for Common fans... but it suffers from the standard "I wanna be played in the clubs" vibe. "The Light" had a good run cause it seemed natural for Com and it was a smooth track with a dope storyline/message (read: all from the public perspective). And it was singable. "Go" wont be embraced on that level... and if it is... the tangible results will end up with Kanye, not Com.

This shit aint rocket science... understand hiphop and get ya head out your ass. Com may be at a point in his career where he could strategically take his throne in hiphop, and the nigga is puttin out a wannabe TRL track that's not even representative of the album.

Face it... a guy straddling the fence between street/"conscious" MC making a "club" track is corny. Just ask Nas. That's why his most successful tracks are thematic anthems "If I Ruled The World", "Hate Me Know"... not "Oochie Wally" or "Big Thangs".

people aint tryina hear that shit from him

you have a choice... com can barely go gold with these puppet move... (read: competing with 50,Nelly for club play) or he can believe in the music he worked so hard on and release a track that will shock people (but is still a Com record to the core).

Thats what you "industry" heads dont understand. Com's rhyming style and now the music (kanye) has evolved in a way that it's more accessible but still Com. He'll fall right on his face with "Go" cause face it... dude is old enough to be the father of a big portion of his demographic. And he already has the "conscious" label on him (like it or not). Com spittin about "draws" and "ass" in a "club" track is gonna flop visciously.

When Wu came back out with Forever, they released "Triumph"... that single was undeniably Wu and wayyy too long for radio and it got crazy burn even with the jiggy era takin off. Com needs to come with "Real People". People will bug the fuck out.

I heard the response to "Corners" when they broke it in DC... 12 people in row saying "THAT SHIT IS SICK, REAL HIPHOP". I was like "DC"???? and "real hiphop"????? oh shit. This is Go-Go town remember? I couldnt believe people was sayin that shit. There was even two young girls prasing the song.

Go ahead with your obligatory "dance" track and put Com back into obscurity while he has the momentum of Kanye, Chapelle, Jay-Z, John Legend, and tons of publications calling it a classic.

just dont be mad at me... i tried to tell ya

"Go" isnt going against the grain you moron

maybe it is against the grain for Com

but it is not against the grain in the public eye (read: It's a corny move)

chew on that for a min

respectfully, goin' against the grain would suggest that a person is not predictable. in this sense, com could be doin' jus' that, 'cause nobody's expectin' him to have a club hit

i'm not suggestin' that it was his motive/intention at all, but its not so far-fetched

this is dude's career... what u mean give it a shot? You cats sit around and complain about the industry, and radio, and this and that then play right into it cause its "safe". I'm not sayin just release anything... i'm sayin find the track that will get people's attention and display Com for who he is and what he's capable of, and use the momentum/alliances he has... and break him thru.

or if that's too much thinking... try to get him a club hit

Man let the man live.. ’Go’s made for the femal demografics – my wife loves the tune..

And how come this ain’t Com? He’s been living in absence for quit a while (referring to his bizarre relationship with badu) – so he got to be mad horny by now.. LOL ..
At least I would be…

As fare as the lyrics goes – Com shows that it’s possible to find a balance between expressing lust and being vulgar - like in the good ol' tribe days..

I havent heard the rest of the album but I am feelin' GO, that being said if the rest of BE is much stronger than GO then you have just got me anticipating this album more than ever..

co-sign on either 'real people' or 'they say' to be the next single.

although 'go' is a really dope track, it aint single worthy.

good discusion here, just to add my $0.02

1) "Go" is a hot track...kind of freaked me out at first on some "com...talking about blowing backs out??!?!" but i had to stop myself from screaming "Go...Go..Go..." on the subway while bumping it in the ipod.

That said, not sure if it'll work as 2nd single..think "Break You Off" -- although "Go" is arguably a MUCH better song.

The Food would be a dope second single but two Kanye hooks in a row may be too much.

P.S. Hopefully Com adds like 2-4 tracks to the final cut bc a few of these tracks fall flat and "Testify" is way too short.

i never thought of Go or Never Been In Love as club tracks. they're easily something that everyone might relate to, but I dont think they were intended for solely club use.

Go and Never Been In Love are two good songs if you ask me. Kweli seemed watered down a bit tho.

Good summer song..
Good for Radio response..
Needs a Good Video..

As far as spins go, it will top "Corners".

But "Corners" is the best shyt I heard on BET or of any mainstream shyt in years.. and that alone got people hyped for the album..

But erryone can chill.. cuz hopefully there's a 3rd single.. and it's too late to bicker on Go.. the video's already done..

any of Faithful, Love is, The Food, or They Say can come next..

Is if they had a video where BE leads into Go...

kinda like when A Tribe Called Quest did Jazz and Buggin' Out.

Personally, "Go" has really caught on to me, and I'm just satisfied that Com got a second video. I would have liked "Food", but Chappelle messed that one up! lol

I don't think that it will personally affect his sales one way or the other. I think Kanye's name will prompt more sales, and he will have respectable numbers.

Platinum hits only come with club hits nowadays, and if that isn't your motive (which I don't believe Com is), then you can definitely BE satisfied with the numbers.

I just think it's funny that people become so full of it that they believe that people (artists and fans) are so one-dimensional that they can't exist outside of the boxes you put them in. Fugg it, Common can put out a club track if he wants, the same way Twista can come out with something a little deeper. When you consider record labels, soundscan, ratings, fans, change etc...What makes people think all of the people will be pleased all the time, maybe this track will make people from the "other side" interested and buy it... By the way is the CD even out yet? I didn't think so.

after 12 years in the game, Com shouldnt have to cop out to the "radio" friendly joints. The people around him (specifically marketing people) should 1) care enough and 2) be creative enough to sit Com down and ask him... "which 3 songs do u feel strongest about on the album?".... then out of those 3, pick the one they think they can spin into a hit thru strategic marketing (radio, video, etc...)

This whole "lets see if we can score a club hit" with an artist like Com is a slap in the face IMO.

Tupac didnt get his place in hiphop based on "How Do You Want It" and "I Get Around". He is were he is cause he released shit like "Brenda's Got A Baby", "Dear Mama", "Hail Mary", etc....

but the record label WON'T do that, b/c they don't give a shit about Common, they care about record sales, and they'll push this track b/c of kanye and the subject matter. I wan't to hold the record labels accountable b/c they constantly push one image of hip hop nowadays, but what can we expect with capitalism.

record labels could sell albums in similar numbers from artists that are on the positive tip if they put their brains to use those fucking yale & harvard degrees and come up with some creative marketing plans...but it's funny, they just use the same shit to push the same artists and they make millions off it and take credit for it.

Hmmmm... when did I ever say that Com COULDN'T drop a club hit. My point is that he doesn't want to, so he doesn't. Yeah, he could make a club hit, but it would also mean that he would have to veer away from the format in which he has defined himself so far. Including the Electric Circus. So please don't attack my opinion without analyzing exactly the point I am making.

My quesiton is this... how concerned do you feel Com is TRULY with Soundscan numbers? Do we feel that he truly wants platinum success? Musical success varies according to artist, and maybe good music is what is needed.

I still would like to see a dual video regardless, only to get a snippet of "BE" in a video.

and a lot of nonsense.

true, com SHOULDN'T have to go the "club single" route but shit, this is the same guy that only got one single last time around (due to label troubles primarily i think). he's probably clicking his heels together about even having a second single drop before his album does.

that said, "Go" is not a club hit in the making. i forsee myself hearing this song at barbecues maybe this summer, but stepping in the club and hearing this would probably surprise the shit out of me. kanye/dilla don't really have an impressive roster of bangers regardless. jesus walks and stand up for kanye, basically nothing for dilla. they should just concentrate on making a dope video for one of common's tracks (i'd suggest faithful), think how many units the white stripes moved off of that lego video alone. fuck it, have com stay 'faithful' to a deaf girl and hold up cue cards for 4 minutes. nobody outside of OKP probably even saw that video.

regardless, i hope com finally gets some of the shine he's been lacking from the mainstream with this album, and maybe a third single will drop and make everyone happy.

dude you are way off base. Go is the perfect single. It has a summertime type feel to it. So, don't go saying it a wannabe club record, bcuz it is not in the least bit contrived at all. Maybe this will be accessable enough to create interest in the album from the casual record buyers. especially if the video is done right. and your other point is offbase too. 'Testify' is the only song that stands out like a sore thumb.

"Sequencing error!!!!! We have a song that should be on the cutting room floor!!!!" Testify is a descent song and all, but it just is missing something. and to have it sandwiched between two superior songs is just plain silly.

Enough talk . May 24 just Go and buy Be and don't worry about what They Say.

In response to Reply # 0

The real "problem" is that there isn't great single material on the album (even though it's dope). "Go" is the closest thing to single material on the album, but it's appeal has a lot more to do with its potential radio plays than any sort of club appeal. People aren't gonna be dancing to it in clubs, Kanye isn't a club oriented producer, but it could crossover to multiple radio formats and get video love. Outside of "Go", Com's best bet might have been to drop this rumored "Corners" remix with Scarface and Mos Def and hope to pull in some of their fans. I can still see "Go" + "Corners" + Com's fannbase from before adding up to a platinum plaque, but not more.

a) this is the best we have, let's release it and hope it drives people to the album before they realize nothing else is good

b) this is a tier 3 single, but we have 2 dynamite singles that will et progessively better and all the while keeping the album near the top of the charts due to the singles getting more and more airplay as released. let's not 'waste' the best single just to get buzz for the album.

methinks b) is being applied. i'd go with (no order, but 'go' first) 'go', 'faithful', 'chi city' for local chicago (b side or something?), an extended remix of 'intro' with a fresh rap about whatever is topical at the time it's released (on some 'why' steeze) and if 'the food' at all, the sped of 'chappelle's show' version. the album version isn't fly at all.

'love is' is a phenomenal track, but to me is reminiscent of kweli's 'never been in love' as it's a sweet track but won't really get airplay. maybe if you threw a revamped lauryn or someone hot on it it may.

what do people to the idea that 'go' is sexually explicit? nothing too crazy, but doesn't seem fit for TRL? will that hurt him in the end?

Strange though, because something tells me it was Kanye's idea to release "Go".

Although I think "Be" is an obvious choice as a next single, it's too short.
Although I remember saying that Talib and Tek should release "The Blast" an my boy was saying it's too short and if they do they'll have to extend it. I was like 'Naw', and next thing you know... they extend it.

I think if they shoot a great video, it could sell Go, and also with Kanye's presence. I think it could work. People are on Ye's jock right now, so they'll give his sneakers burn if he put them out to dry!!

Also, because most of these songs are cut quite suddenly, something tells me the released version is going to be a tad longer. Especially "Be" and "Testify". Who knows, but Comm's race definitely isn't over yet my brothers and sisters...

If you've read his interviews, the idea came up from John Mayer to do a song about your fantasies. Kanye was trying to create the melody for "go" and Mayer gave him a suggestion. I know it's not what were used to hearing from com, but why do you have to perceive it as a conscious/positive MC tryin' to do the club track. Why can't he talk about his fantasies of women?

I like the song and think it's catchy. As the next single? I'm not sure if it will totally catch on, I agree with you on that. Maybe "testify" or "real people", or even "chi-city." Com made two tracks "love is" and "faithful" that remind me of "the light" too much. the tracks are dope, but I don't want to see another single like that.

Trick daddy was on Rap City a few months ago when his joint dropped. Tigga (I think) asked him about selecting singles. He said the labels don’t listen to what he wants. He does make sure that he puts good joints on his record so it don’t matter which one they pick. This is the kind of record y’all wanted Com to make and still you’re not satisfied. I liked "Electric Circus" as a compliment to "Phrenology." "Be" compliments "Late Registration," which is not neccesarily a good thing.

whatever.

it's good to see people concerned and anxious about the "wrong moves" made by a record company for a favorite artist.

That's the love right there.

Look, I think everyone knows that the label is going to go all out this time around for Com. There WILL be a third VIDEO, so ease up, even if Kanye has to pay for the video himself, there will be a third video.

but it still aint a good look for com. He'll garner some "sex appeal" attention from the more mature hiphop crowd (no homo)... but the vast majority of the man hiphop demographic wont touch it.

And I'll update my suggestion to a combined video of Be & Real People

"Go" is a great look for Com.. it rounds out dude's appeal. He already went the Andre 3000 route with Electric Circus, he flipped the gritty shit with "Corners".. now "Go" with the purely hedonistic vibe.

He's presenting himself as a jack of all trades. He'll never be able to flip that club shit like, say, Q-tip did with "Vivrant Thing" though, but "Go" is a decent effort.

Truth: "Love Is" is the only song on Be thats built for radio.

that is the weekest song on the album single-wise. Standard neo-soul "conscious" hiphop song with "Love" in the title, u knew it was going to be there. And it's straight elevator-music status.

They should drop the Chapelle "food" performance as an underground/unofficial single and see if it takes off on its own. MTV2/Rap City would eat that up. And Be or Real People or both worked as next video/single.

i would merge the two They Say's... Kanye came good lyrically but Consequence killed the track vocally/delivery-wise. But that aint a track thats going to a) get radio play or b) increase sales. It will just give Kanye some more attention.

I don't think that GO is the best single from the album but I really believe that they are saving the best stuff (see reply 95: http://board.okayplayer.com/okp.php?az=show_topic&forum=3&topic_id=40165&mesg_id=40165&page=#40744 ) There will be at least one more single. I'd recommend BE, Food, or They Say.

I also feel that GO is a good move for Com. It's not a club banger, and I don't believe it was ever intended as one. It's also not corny. It's a mature adult track about healthy sexual desire. The women will eat this up. Look for Com to end up on the list of the sexiest black men of 2005 because of this song (no homo).

This single doesn't have to make the album. It just has to carry enough buzz for a month or so to get them to the next single.

<------- The most important release of 2006, coming on July 23.
UPDATE: It's a boy!!!!!!

GO is straight for the ladies. cats talkin' about "dudes ain't gonna ride with him..." this ain't/won't be/never was about dudes. it wasn't dudes that went bonkers over 'the light', and it wasn't dudes that went bonkers over 'come close'. but of course, dudes are still gonna buy the album (and that's why 'they say' and 'the food' are gonna hold us down)

ya know why? cuz nukkas ride with what makes women moist; that's why so many dudes got maxwell's first jont.

there was only one question to ask, once 'the corner' got comm's credibility back- "which one of these songs is most likely gonna make women moist?" the answer is GO- and common's about to be your girl's favorite rapper (if he ain't already...)

I agree about the singles being preludes to his solo shit
but the fact remains Kanye's name does enduce higher spins
and sales right now. like even with the two joints you mentioned
Dialated got more spins with "this way" than they ever would
have got on Chicago radio at least cause he did the track, and the
same with "selfish". shit he prolly gettin paid just for us talkin

something being played over and over . . . . and over again doesn't qualify it as a hit???? Granted I don't like the Whisper Song, but the fact that at some point during the day (or rather several points during the day) you'll here that or the remix makes it a hit, at the very least by industry standards. As was the case with "this way" (sorry Dilated I still think "Marathon" should have been the first single and I was disappointed you road the Kanye train) and "selfish". But maybe I should have more clearly defined my argument . . . . my bad

and opinions are like assholes if I recall correctly . . . not shit and I'm sure you got one of both

>I'd go with "Real People" or "They Say"

they say should be the next single, it has all the makings of a single. hot-ass john legend on the hook, ppl would finally know what consequence looks like, and the beat is fire. instead he uses go. if i ever get to talk to common ima ask him what the fuck he was thinking. go doesnt have the charisma to be a single, meanwhile they say grabbed me the moment i heard it. to be a single something about the song has to grab ppl before they even hear most of it. common's fuckin up

PS. i dont got time/energy to read the million replies u already got, so sorry if im repeatin someone

none of Common's tracks have enough bass to really bump in a club setting or in somebody's truck. One thing about Kanye's "Soul Rap" is that it really doens't translate into club bangers, like say a Swizz Beats or Neptunes. Except for every now and then, like that song he did for Ludacris (When I move you move) ... Ability to be bumped in the club is important if Common want's blow up, crossover, or whatever you want to call it ...

what about the black eyed peas? i mean suffice it is to say they have gotten pretty corny, but they're now extremely successful and used to be "underground conscious b-boys"... the only difference is that "Go" is actually a good song.

"Go" doesnt blatantly pander to white people...

i would say it does with the John Mayer feature but his presence is negligable musically.

Go is the right choice because the people you talking about buying these records dont wanna hear no shit about love or they wont catch the lyrics of chi city and they dont really dont care to hear him talking about if god was a woman...Go is smooth and most people i know who i let listen to the album only liked Go and The Corner
