"Dagoodness. et al. read this. because it's vibrant and very good for you..."

ok. yesterday morning i called q-tip to apologize for relaying the message of some of you ok heads about your feelings on his joint "vibrant". i hadn't even heard it before i left a message. i heard it on saturday. i love that shit. then i felt guilty. then i was like.....i love this shit. it's not "jiggy". not at all. songs and performances should be judged on content only. not a style.
before the whole "disco sucks" backlash of the 70's there was a period where quality disco was as respectable as anything the beatles or hendrix did. (see THE SOUND OF PHILADELPHIA, and barry white). so okay. you hear a joint on the radio and everyone jumps on the jock. you then my players have to decide for yourself whether or not you felt as though that particular song was a blatent cash in on the culture.
"vibrant" isn't one of those songs. if it is than please enlighten me. the loop is classic barry white. and tip's just being himself. mind you hearing a jam in a club can always alter your view. the speakers where tight. low end was heavy. and the dj was good. my date was bangin' and this song comes on.....and the shit was.........tight.
which leads me to my point. as a musician how far will y'all let me go? i mean yeah i make these records for your enjoyment, but i admit i got heads at heart when i create. not like "oh they'll love it" more like "let's try and chalk one up for the "good guys"" because the hip-hop i enjoy (loot pack, slum village, black star, gang starr, outkast, etc.) needs a stellar starting team to go to war against "them" (the bad/whack guys). so i look as each creation as a fired cannon in a war in which i'm proudly serving my side.
but metaphores aside. sometimes i get the craving to do afrobeat records (see: fela) or i wanna put a kick ass rock joint on our shit. sheeeeit for those lucky enough to attened the second show/second night bowery show. what we did to you got me was a miricle. that classic house shit with lots of percussion. yesterday i drumed on a remix of the 80's classic "baby i'm scared of you" man that shit felt liberating! that's what i want to do. but then you get certain people that impose their way of life on you (do i do that? hope not...) and cry "foul!". i mean we got blasted just because "clones" (one of the "realest" hip-hop songs) ain't sound nann like "mellow my man". and i catch some of these people, they be like "who was that?!?!?!" and i'm like that was us....then it's scowl city. so here i am at the crossroads seeing one of my breathern grow up and grow on (he'll be 30 soon). sure nothing will beat that first time you heard "electric relaxation" (...and by the way...it's "relax yourself girl....please settle down") but that was another space and time. when you have high expectations of course you'll get let down. i'm gonna stop now because i'm packing and i wanna see how big my headline was.

"god made me funky"

>Why is "Clones" one of the realest
>hip-hop songs and what constitutes "real"
>hip-hop?
You had to ask? Try this, start the song at the beginning off low, turn it up a little bit more after each keyboard(?) sequence and by the time you get to ?uests bringing in Mars verse have it blasting. you will see how hot this song is. Plus the lyrical content is just on another planet. When you first heard dywm, did you expect to hear about moms smokin up product on the next album? Thats REAL.
Real hip hop- when u wanna blow, and make an album with top notch original production n lyrics on some im hungry shit. you dont stress it if you dont go platinum, and you DONT compromise your art so that the mainstream masses can hear it. thats just my definition though.
don't take offense, i use that word loosely.
i know the song is hot and dice and malik b rip the shit out the frame, but the statement just struck me as odd. i mean, come on, the realest hip-hop song? "no my brother" there is no realest hip-hop song. Well, the Rapping Duke put out some contender in '84, "Duh huh, Duh huuuhhhh, Duh, huh, huh,hu hu, huuuuhhhhhhh"

kev b laughing right now.

Good definition though.

>Why is "Clones" one of the realest
>hip-hop songs and what constitutes "real"
>hip-hop?
>kevb
i did a typo. i meant one of "our" realest songs. "real" and "street" and "hard" in my book are one in the same. to me a jam is one of the above. a classic mixture of gritty ass drums mixed to perfection. an infectious loop or melody topped with stellar ass rhymes. now if you asked that question for general reasons then there's your answer. but if you were being a smartass......tsk tsk tsk
"god made me funky"

...you should do your thing because your crew has always BEEN experimental.
One thing I've been wondering ever since I saw you & Thought posting on here more and more - are you being influenced by what is said by us "players"? What I mean is, if you have an opinion about something in perticular, and one day you come to the board and everyone is posting about the EXACT OPPOSITE of your opinion - does it alter it? Cause we all here on this board have a lot in common...a lot of us share the same opinions. I know this has happened to me on more than one occasion, where I felt strongly about something and when I saw all the different responses on the same topic, I saw the logic in the opposite opinion, and changed my mind about it...is this a good thing? Who knows. I guess if you have certain views on something and you change you mind, it's all good, but then, do you change somewhat? More importantly, if this said "opinion" is music, will THAT change?
Just me thinking out aloud....
*checking e-mail..."you have (0) messages in your folder"...awww man!! Well, back to Long & McQuade...*
Oneday...I'll get an answer to my keyboard question...

6. "But....."
In response to Reply # 0

Now I was one of the first to bring up how terrible the new Tip song is, and on further listen, I cant really recant my statement. Now after readin Quest's post and the whole Barry White comparason, does make me more open to the joint....BUT the track still hurts me to listen to, because it IS Q-Tip. Now here goes my attempt at an analogy, alright if a kid get like 1400 on his/her SAT, and is not satisfied and decides to take it again. One can expect that he/she will score within plus or minus 30 points of their last score. Now back to Q-Tip, when I listen to "Electric Relaxation" and then "A Vivrant Thing" it simply does not "make the grade." We expect as a spoiled hip-hop listeners that Tribe or Q-Tip in this matter will be close with his work, either better or worse than his previous joints(thus the plus/minus, I really dont think that anaolgy is gonna fly...oh well) but we should expect a certain level of performance from our favoriute artists. Thats why we respect you guys, cause yall never stop from putting out the quality product....but I guess I am sort of a hipocrite, in that I respect yall as artists, but I am quick to put down the gavel on joints like "A Vivrant Thing" But like I said above, change is constant and at times good, but when we are forced to comprimise in the name of change, we the listener are short-changed. And as far as the Roots doing a Rock track, or sumthin outside the norm, we know its gonna be hott, cause the Roots will not release a track, that they feel is inadequate. Remember yall, Quest says he can barely listen to "DYWM" while most of us realize that it's a hip-hop classic. See the gripe over "vivrant" is that it seems the track was done in haste....for example Tip says "special girl, do your thing in my eity bity world..." and "sittin back with this mic in my hand/ spittin hot shit tryin to see this grand..." NOW yall tell me, can you imagine a Roots track with lyrics like that??!?!?!??! I know im bein rough on one of my ALL TIME FAVORITE mc's, but we must be judged by our actions.....
now Im all for doin tracks which appeal to larger audiences, but my concern comes when artists retard thier style to make a hit...remember Tip a couple of years ago "they know the abstract is soul on ice/ the characters of man/never ever of mice/shorty let me tell you my only advice/its gosta to do with lots of lovin/and it aint nuthin nice" now tell me thats not brilliant. But I respect the fact that when Quest gives a thumbs up to a song, you know it must have sumthin special(hey you dont mess with the best) but...i hope yall understand where im comin from....

Peace
Ram"igotcarpaltunnelafterthispost"XL

8. "Definition of a Sell-Out"
In response to Reply # 6

Ok, I just read the "why are the roots not sellouts?" post and then this one, so i got some shit to vent. noone would care if you decided to do some rock shit that came from the heart because you would be doing some shit from the heart. i can use the example of "it's just about over" from goodie mob's still standing as a great fusion of rock and hip-hop that came out of a true quest for something artistic. i can use that bullshit krs song on i got next as an example of someone trying to do a rock song just to do something different and failing miserably. ok, rambling...the difference between you (quest) doing some unorthodox ish and vibrant thing is that tip did not do vibrant thing because he thought it would make a good song nor did he push any sort of envelope. he made a song that is radio friendly and would get play, not to mention the lyrics are trash. this is why tip now joins nas and o.c. in the land of fall-offs. i will not flatly say that tip is a sellout because maybe he is really on some other ish and thinks this is a good song, but as far as i can tell he's trying to do some hot 97 club shit and that, to me, makes him a sell-out. not because he is trying to make comercially viable music, but because he is letting himself fall into what is currently considered commercially viable, which, as opposed to a few years ago, is terrible. just my humble opinion. peace...go slow...
p.s. i hope you get a chance to take another listen to the track quest. i know you won't be able to come out on a fellow artist and friend here on the site, but i'm guessing you will not defend this track with the same fever you reserve for jay-dee.
>this is why tip now joins
>nas and o.c. in the land
>of fall-offs.
nas is a little debatable, but what gripe could you possibly have with o.c.? I have jewelz and every track on there Im feelin. I never heard his first album and word is its hot, but he hasnt fallen off. In response to ?uests post, just do whatever comes from your heart, make music that you would enjoy listening to, and its more than likely we will all feel it. Go ahead and experiment, but always keep some of that raw flavor too. Maybe you felt vivrant because you were in a dancing atmosphere and thats what the song is for. But like kwis said if you sit down and listen to it as a fan, not in a club like the rest of us have, you may wind up feeling different. Dont let the "tip is my boy" thing come into play, because for their good I would let a friend constructively know I wasnt feelin their work and why I wasnt feelin it. And this is comin from a die hard tribe fan who has 0 problems with either of the last 2 tribe albums.
in only 10 minutes...did you beat the response time for a BT post?
Okay, as for "Vivrant". I felt weird about it the first time I heard it...it sounded off to me...part of me liked it, and the other part didn't...kind of like a guilty pleasure thing, where your booty "involuntarily" shakes and your head nods, but you'll be damned if you purchase the shit to own.
His lyrics are sub-par, and the track isn't special (sorry ?uest, I'm not reminded of Barry White when I hear the loop, but I'm not too familiar with his "faster" songs) But it is pleasing to my need to shake my ass...I guess we all disappointed that Q-Tip wasn't giving us more, like he usually does, like when the guy you date stops taking you out to eat at Shark Bar and thinks a video and microwave popcorn will do...

I like it because it does what its supposed to-but I hate it because of who its coming from--ATCQ love joints are phenomenal from Bonita(this song does things to me--just a side note) to Find a Way...and he could have done the same with "Vivrant"...but I don't think that was his aim, and that, I can't understand...I could theorize on that for days....

Peace and Love

I am one of those people who hated on Q-Tip song. Maybe he has gotten to the point where I expect nothing but the best from him. That's a good thig right? I don't think that you as a artist want people to expect wack ish from you. I am going to listen to Vibrant again and make my decision from there. I am still waiting for the album because as long as the Ummah is doing the production for it, it's going to be ill. Tip is still one of the best emcee's ever. Damn lost my train of thought so bear with me....hmmm....blah...blah....blah. Uh oh yeah it ain't over motherfu@#er's. Does anyone know if the song MR.INCOGNITO is going to be on the album? And has anyone heard the song "the night he got caught" from ATCQ. That song is pretty ill. i don't know how the production is being billed. because truth be told the ummah is a name thing only. check it
THE LOVE MOVEMENT:
jay-dee:start it up (if y'all heard the original record he got this from y'all would die......it's a slowed down version of "sweet georgia brown" the harlem globetrotters theme), find a way (another chopped up unrecognizable gem), steppin' it up (twisted cannonball adderly), like it like that (the guitar is stellar....the rhyme..--eh), his name is muddy ranks, busta's lament,
tip: da booty, 4moms, give me, pad and pen, hot 4 u, rock rock y'all (what i beleive to be a fitting swan song to tribe simply because the production sloppiness of the loop is such a throwback to '87 marley marl and so anti "tribe" that it's probably the most envelope pushing song on there. just listen....dosn't sound like them huh?
ali: common ground (could've been a classic but godamn phife!! 4 lines??????!?!???), against the world, the love (those strings, plus the slick rick shit was dope to me)
tip did his solo shit all by himself. jay gave him 5 joints. and all of the Soul of Aquarians (me, d'angelo, jay-dee, james poyseur) contributed something. tellin you now. he's gonna come back with a vengence. but for y'all to enjoy it don't raise your expectations so damn hi.

"god made me funky"

for breaking the production down for me. I always tried to figure out who did what on the album. I can tell a Jay-Dee beat once the neddle drops(sonic boom type of ish),Tip's production is dope(that Rock rock ya'll song is hella old school sounding I love it), Da booty(love),Give me(made Nore actually sound tolerable),hot 4 u(love it). Aww damn eff it I love the love movement(for the times it is a really good album)although it is not "classic" Tribe it is still good. But I listened to the song in question again and I must say that I am still not feeling it. To each is own right? When the hell is SLUM VILLAGE coming out? I went to the website but it isn't finished yet. I felt blessed seeing them in concert and have been waiting for the album for at least a year and a half. I still need vol.1. What is the song that Jay-Dee sampled for "find a way"? It sounds like the woman is singing in french when I listen to the instrumental, but when I listen to the song it sounds like english. I am buggin' right now. Peace,Nick
"this girl from my past had rediculous ass"-Phife
P.S. I need a ASR 10 and a Sp1200

Well, I'm not going to sit here and say that I'm going to listen to the song again and then turn around and say that I like it simply because ?uest said it's "nice" (as some will do). I don't really care for the song (I don't hate it) but I'm not going to say that q-tip has fallen off. This is only one single and I'll have to say all of that when I hear the whole album as I said before when this whole thing was brought up. LOL
Just wanted to make sure people would read this.
For starters, if Im correct, this wasnt an Ummah song, Its a Violaters track, and very well may not be on any Q-Tip album but on the defjam released Violater Compilation comin later this summer.
So its not as if Tip is "dumbin himself" to try and sell his product. This song is a party jam, plain and simple. Will I listen to it over and over and go, "Damn!Tip ripped that ish!"...No.
But will I put it on my next mixtape...hell yeah! Cuz it makes you shake ya arse. The lyrics are somewhat trite and whoever said the song sounds rushed, you're right. It sounds pretty hastily thrown together, but if we just take it for what it's worth, a jam, we'll all sleep better tonite.
As for Q-Tip joining the ranks of Nas(and what the bejesus does O.C. have to do with that!?!), dont forget, Tribe always managed to keep one foot underground while bringing more of the world (i.e. coffeshop chicks and white dudes) down for a look. The judgement on whether Tip is going Versace/Italian Ice should definatly be reserved till we see what he does on his own joint, not on a compilation-ON DEF JAM FOR GODS SAKE!!!
Besides, if he does, at least he gave us ten years of some of the best hiphop to grace our precious ears, not one album with ten ILL tracks that autoMATIClly etched grandeurs of what couldve been in our heads forever.
One.
"Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to su...ffering" - Yoda

I'm happy (girlfriend), Tired (No Sleep), Excited (Knicks won), Anxious (Start new job), and I really dont give a shit (I dont), so I'll put in my .02 before I hit the pillow. First off, If the Tip song you all are talking about is the same one I'm thinking of, WOW....It REALLY sucks. I heard somebody play that shit at Hot 97, and I felt like I was gonna throw the radio against the wall. Did Tip Fall Off? Possibly....Maybe Almost Definitely. Is Tip a Sellout? Hell no...dont be a bunch of dicks. I see Tip showin love to his fans so many times when I'm chillin in the village, In Tower records showin peace to his fans, and up in Fat Beats, shoppin for new joints...stayin in touch with the real. For you people to say Tip Fell off, I understand...To say he sold out? Shit, I think He has the right to earn a few bucks. God only knows Tribe got screwed over by Zomba for the Low End Theory, and I dont even know about thier other joints....Let the man make his payday. He's 30 years old!
Now, as for ?uest doing some experimental rock shit...DAMN, aint it obvious that the brother has a wide range of tastes?? If ?uestlove covering a rock song REALLY surprises anyone, I think you should take your head out of the toilet bowl, and put it a little closer to your CD player... ?uest is gonna be ?uest. Up to this point, I've enjoyed just about everything (to my knowlege)in which he had some form of creative input. However, if He did some Rock shit, and it TRUELY sucked...I wouldnt buy it. THATS RIGHT PEOPLE... Its possible. Just let the shit go Plastic, and purchase the next joint on the shelves. I know we all think of ?uest as fam, and he IS a hell of a cool guy, but when it comes to the BUSINESS of music, his job is to ENTERTAIN us. Thats what we buy his stuff for, and thats what the record label signed him for... To ENTERTAIN US, so THEY could Profit from it. While I dont see something of ?uestlove's being TRUELY wack (No pressure there man), I can honestly say that if it was, I wouldnt buy it..and I would hope that alot of you would act in the same manner...the manner thats most true to yourselves. Thats the only REAL way to let people know how you feel.
You dont like Tips joint? Let him know.... How??? Keep your money on your pocket, and dont put it in his. Throw stones at me if you must, treat me like that kid in the De La Soul is Dead skits ("I kinda...like..it..man (SMACK!)), but Vivrant Thing is growing on me (and not because I was swayed by ?uest "I'M NOT A GENIUS" Love). To me, that song is strictly a party song. If I was tied up and dragged to a club and I heard this, I would shake my booty. As ?uest say, when you hear this in a club and the system is tight, it's bumping. When I was in DC, they played some ol' Master P shit and I was dancing (not as hard as when JazzyFatNasty did that reggae song last night, but I was dancing regardless). Hell I even danced to Been Around the World Remix. WHAT!?!? And I think those two as ARTISTS are garbage.
IMO, I think that the gap between party and "real hip-hop" songs has widen. If it's too jiggy, you don't respect it, but if it's Co-Flo level, you can't REALLY dance to it, cuz underground folks focus more on making that head-bob while you're in your cypher, freestyling. Don't take that as a diss (well...maybe it is...). That's how I see it. The only cat I see that can bridge that gap is Redman. Don't front like you didn't feel "I Be That". The Roots are getting there (I'll get to yall later). I mean is it that hard to bridge that gap? Who do I blame? CAN I blame anyone?
The Roots. In the pocket. Growing with each album. Woke up those sleeping with "Clones". "You Got Me" a beautiful song. Kinda fucked up that folks who don't know you will only consider that an Erykah song. Selling out? Because the "mainstream" is suddenly feeling yall? What kind of madness is that? People who say that they're in the rap game because they love it is 75% full of shit. You can rhyme on the corner in cyphers. Cats want to get paid so that they don't have to do a 9 to 5. Doesn't everyone want to be known at least once in their lives? However it is WHAT you do to get that money that matters. Are you going to keep growing like Prince or are you going the route of Nas? By making yourself more accessible to public, is that going to help you grow? ?uest, I know if need be, if you REALLY wanted to get loot, you can make some songs that all these HOT 97 cats will dig. That would be too simple. That's the same problem Prince had after he did Purple Rain. I remember him saying, "I know how to make hits. I can make a top selling album easy." but he wanted to grow as an artist. All that to say sometimes you gotta push that envelope in name of artistry. I'm cool with the rock thing as long as you do it because you want to.
We as Hip-Hop inhabitants owe it to ourselves to expand. We also owe it to the folks that we like support. To the artists, do your thing if it makes you happy and not because of what the record company is telling you we want to hear. 9 times out of 10, they're concerned with the books (I can't really fault them because it's a business, but...).
Why do I feel that I made sense, but yet I didn't...
"Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent."---Unknown (but it's dope, right?)

27. "money vs. artistry"
In response to Reply # 24

Glad you brought up the topic of Prince/The Artist, who I believe is the greatest musical genius who has made music in at least the last two decades. True, he has grown as an "artist" over his career, but he has made some concessions to make some crossover hits, or at least expand his audience base. HOw else can you explain his occasional attempts at making rap music?
But HIPHOP is different. Why? Listen to the the Intro to Things Fall Apart. Hiphop is not seen as an artform, and is actually degraded, pimped if you will, by "the industry". Can you blame them? We, as the hip hop nation, have a history of abandoning our heroes. Kool Herc? He'll get props, but not the $$$ that he so rightly deserves. Big Daddy Kane? Kool Moe Dee? Whodini? Doug E Fresh? We even disregard KRS-1 and Chuck D!?! 10 years ago all this would be blasphemy. This list of disposable heroes can go on and on, but my point is WE HAVE NO RESPECT FOR OUR HISTORY.
Which brings me to Q-tip's "Vivrant". He knows that he is facing a point in his career where most "hip hop fans" usually tend to abandon their heroes, and move on to the next thing. He knows that "Beats, Rhymes, and LIfe" and "love movement" were met with a lukewarm response by the fans. At his age, he still wants to feel the need to be a success, and if this is his "9 to 5" for his life, he's gotta think longevity in the game. And dammit, he needs to find a way to put food on the table!! To the chagrin of us diehard Tribe fans, we feel he's abandoning us, but if this is his CAREER, then its either expand your audience or perish.
I would put him in the same category of LL Cool J or Busta Rhymes. You cannot stay underground forever. I cringe when I hear this song, but truth be told, if it comes on in a club, I'm shaking dat money maker.

Yo, I wrote something similar about this last month. When I heard it as a mpeg I was not feeling it either. But when I heard that joint in the club while I was getting my dance on, I wasn't upset. The sister I was dancing with wasn't either, maybe that has something to do with it. But seriously the track is a party, good mood kind of joint. I don't feel that it is meant to be taking seriouslly or to reach critical acclaim.
I sincerley feel like ATCQ is one of the greatest groups ever. I think they reached their peak with Midnight Marauders. I just cannot fathom how you can make something that surpasses the material on those first (3) joints. That is like spiritual to me, Footprints? It is possible that everything he puts out from now on will not measure up to his previous work. I like this joint on the Slam soundtrack but I just like it, that's it. We shouldn't question why people come out of our lives or (fall off) we should remeber them as they were and treasure the time they were there. Their significance in who we are as people today.

Don't worry about the people that can't stand to agree(sp)with you because of your status. If I don't agree with someones opinions I tell them and we usually argue but we (more often than not)see the others perspective on things. This is a message board that thrives off OPINIONS. If you don't agree with someone and there opinions then say so and you guys can duke it out on the boards(Ali/Foreman style). So to Quest and everyone I say do not keep your opinions inside where nobody can hear them, opinions need to be heard and who knows you may jsut say something revolutionary and inspire somebody. There is no such thing as a stupid question only stupid answers by people who think that they are better then others,I am guilty of this too,we all are. And the only way to fail is to not try at all. Just some things for ALL of us to think about.Peace and much respect to all who post here. I was one of those people who said "I'm not going to change my mind about blah blah blah because ?uest said it's aiight." Well, I didn't mean it like that I was referring to the fact that some people change their minds about something just because their favorite artist (or person) says it's good or whatever. I didn't mean to sound all harsh or anything. You know I still luv you like a play cousin.
Peace
Nayyirah
"What is a Nayyirah?"
"Nayyirah Rah Like a Dungeon Dragon."
"Will You Be My NaYbor?"

Those comments are not an indictment of you, but the people who do flip just to agree with you. In past debates some seemed to wait for you to give your opinion and then say something to the effect of, "yeah, yeah! what he said!" You're a scary person to disagree with because your technical musical knowledge is, well...you know. I think people are proud of themselves when they get up the nerve to stick by their guns and want to bring a little attention to the action. peace...go slow...
"And if you don't like it kid" don't "take it personal." --Guru

Thems just jokes, baby...
?uest, that was not an attempt to "dis". If you noticed the majority of the posts were AGAINST Vivrant Thing. I stated that I kinda liked the song "Throw stones at me if you must, treat me like that kid in the De La Soul is Dead skits ("I kinda...like..it..man (SMACK!)), but Vivrant Thing is growing on me". That was like, what, the first semi-positive response to Tip's song. As stated by you, you were feeling the song "i love that shit. then i felt guilty. then i was like.....i love this shit". So you know how this board gets when someone has the same view as you ("What? Improv!? agreed with ?uest? Oh he's on the dick!" Remember this: http://www.okayplayer.com/dcforum/general1/297.html#1<;/a>).
Seriously though, what would I gain by "dissing" you? Because on the real, that was not my intention (damn, ?uest, you should "know" me by now).
*holds out a peace pipe*
"Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent."---Unknown (but it's dope, right?)

i'm reading the posts here and i just don't get it. why are people giving tip so much flack...okay i don't like the song but who's to say he fell off. people said the samething about tribe when beats rhymes came out. you can't expect people to do what we want all the time. as artist their first responsibility is to themselves. fuck that, if he's happy with the song i can't be mad at the man. i know ppl are like no, we, the fans, come first. well i personally don't believe that.
it appears to me, from these posts, that you all will except anything that the roots put out 'cause you say they won't put out something subpar. who is to say that tip didn't think the track was banging. who is to say he's just trying to get airplay. we can only assume until the man speaks and tells us himself. until then...quit riding him so hard. with tough love there is a limit. 'cause the more you scream at at person, eventually they tune you out.

it's
>not "jiggy". not at all. songs
>and performances should be judged on
>content only.
I don't think it's "jiggy." I just don't like it. We're all entitled to our opinions, so I understand that some people will like it...I just don't happen to dig it.
> before the
>whole "disco sucks" backlash of the
>70's there was a period where
>quality disco was as respectable as
>anything the beatles or hendrix did.
>(see THE SOUND OF PHILADELPHIA, and
>barry white). so okay. you hear
>a joint on the radio and
>everyone jumps on the jock. you
>then my players have to decide
>for yourself whether or not you
>felt as though that particular song
>was a blatent cash in on
>the culture.
> "vibrant" isn't one of those
>songs.
I agree with you. I just don't dig it.
if it is than please
>enlighten me. the loop is classic
>barry white. and tip's just being
>himself. mind you hearing a jam
>in a club can always alter
>your view. the speakers where tight.
>low end was heavy. and the
>dj was good. my date was
>bangin' and this song comes on.....and
>the shit was.........tight.
>
>which leads me to my point.
>as a musician how far will
>y'all let me go? i mean
>yeah i make these records for
>your enjoyment, but i admit i
>got heads at heart when i
>create. not like "oh they'll love
>it" more like "let's try and
>chalk one up for the "good
>guys""
Even though we okayplayers have similar tastes when it comes to music/hip-hop/the roots/etc., we aren't a homogenous group. Some of us may dig something while other okayplayers may not dig it.
There probably were a lot of okayplayers who DID dig Vivrant, but didn't speak up for fear of retribution.
because the hip-hop i enjoy
>(loot pack, slum village, black star,
>gang starr, outkast, etc.) needs a
>stellar starting team to go to
>war against "them" (the bad/whack guys).
>so i look as each creation
>as a fired cannon in a
>war in which i'm proudly serving
>my side.
>
> but metaphores
>aside. sometimes i get the craving
>to do afrobeat records (see: fela)
>or i wanna put a kick
>ass rock joint on our shit.
>sheeeeit for those lucky enough to
>attened the second show/second night bowery
>show. what we did to you
>got me was a miricle. that
>classic house shit with lots of
>percussion. yesterday i drumed on a
>remix of the 80's classic "baby
>i'm scared of you" man that
>shit felt liberating! that's what i
>want to do.
I personally LUV that ish. But then again, I LUV 80'S & classic HOUSE music.
As far as "vivrant," who knows, after hearing it for the 50th time, I may like it. But right now, I ain't feelin' it.

natural1
"Her daddy would beat H.E.R., eyes all puff..." Common

Yea, I'm one of those peeps that get disgruntled when i hear those overplayed "mainstream" joints. As for the Q-tip joint, i only heard it as a low quality realaudio file, and it probably wasn't the whole thing either...But i do feel y'all when "one of ours" makes a "club" joint...Like "what the heck????" But my feeling is that, we can't really expect any of these artists to make what we want. I mean it's their music, and if it's for the love or for the dough, it's their decision. I mean it can be cool to state your opinion to let the artist know the deal, but we can only complain for so long...There are other artists out there, sometimes it just takes more work to find what ya want, maybe even takin' risks on buyin a CD or tape of an artist you ain't heard before. Cuz i know I ain't dependin' on the radio much nowadays. Who knows why Tip would make a more club friendly joint if that is what it is. But it's out and if you don't like it, then you can pass it up. I understand that Tribe is classic, but nowadays "classic" doesn't get played as much on the air round here... I know, i'm disappointed by that too...but think about it...if there was no mainstream, then there probably wouldn't be an underground full of hungry artists...or if the Roots got played 24/7 on the air, would we appreciate the album as much, if the stuff was bein rocked on MTV like Backstreet Boys? I mean I think TFA is tight, but if it got stuffed down my throat, then i probably wouldn't be as pumped as i get when i throw the CD on. Anyway...the choice can be ours..if your favorite MC ain't comin with it...there's other stuff you can pick up..or you can throw on their past material..it just takes work...but i do wish it didn't have to be like that sometimes, but oh well..it probably just makes me more appreciative when i do hear a dope jawn.
peace in Christ,
Derrick
http://www.syntaxrecords.com<;/a>

Indeed it's a Vivrant thing, but the truth be told i wasn't feelin it the first time i heard it but now after carefu;l examination of the music and lyrics i must say the song is a dope party joint, big ups to Tip for goin out on a limb and commin correct. your totally right, everyone around me looks for songs that go along with a trend rather than looking further into it and letting the groove get them. When I heard electric relaxation in high school, I heard a new kind of groove in that than on any of the other shit around Queens at the time(Black Sheep, L.L., The Goats, etc.). What I love about the roots is how every song redefines the groove. But I must admit that I bumped Dynamite so many times in my car that I blew a speaker and I constantly have that song spinning in my head. At least its not Brittney Spears. The Roots rule, and I hope to catch the show on June30 in Paris because I'll be there on vacation.Late!
