"What part of a Roots song gets you every time?"

Everybody has a part of a certain song that brings some kind of emotion out of you and makes that song special to you. It could either get you amped, make you laugh, make you smile, even make you cry.
For me, during "Mellow My Man" when Black Thought is rhyming over the jazz break in the middle of the song, perfectly on beat, and then all of a sudden, says "Oops, I lost it" and instantly the original beat comes back in, it just makes your head nod a little more than it already was.
Another is more simple: during "Clones" before each verse when the music gets really smooth and ?uest's vicious trigger comes in to introduce the next verse get me amped everytime.
To me that is what makes a song classic or makes it memorable to a person. It could be one lyric, one note in the song, but it's just what makes a song great to you.
Anyway, I'm rambling. What's your memorable moment of a song?
-1Mind
"Kids who step to the Soul you're labeled fools/
Who claim to drop jewels/But for now you do the catching"
-Posdnous, "Tha Bizness"

I didn't get a chance to see the song performed live but I think "Y'all Know Who" is a contender for song of the year. It's unbelievable how after releasing TFA they come with something just as great if not greater than the material on the album. The lyricism is superior, the beat, genius. Just a great song!
-1Mind
"My mouth must be full of insect feces/
Cause I'm always saying some fly shit"
-Thirstin Howl III, "Frogstyle"
My Mellow My Man - When all the music goes out, then the bass drum hits. Plus all the keys in the song are great
Double Trouble - When it changes music. This is near the end with Mos Def. Most bands would have used the end as a whole nother song
Lesson Part 2 - Dice's Freestyle plus Rahzel and Quest. better than the original

I love the Roots to death...and "Hypnotic" was my favorite before this one. But Tariq managed to put my entire perspective of hip-hop on wax...then come Chi's First Son Common with the ill shit we support him for...And then the violins...shit was too much for me. I played that song at least 25 times when I first heard it...and I had it memorized by the second!
DVSJ

"Love Of My Life" that shit is simply beautiful.
As much as I hate to hear strings nowadays in R&B(more like a gimmick now "hey mom look how 'diversified' we are" see Jennifer Lopez) the string part in Love o My Life reminded me of how much the strings set off "No Scrubs" and "The Boy Is Mine", otherwise horrible, horrible records. Oh yeah, if I hear anymore "spanish guitar" in black music somebodys getting they ass wooped.
The drum & bass break at the end of "You Got Me" is a very close second, as anyone who drove alongside my car earlier this year will testify.
MrB

Here is mine:
"Panic"- Rahzel and that bassline
"Episode"- Jazzy's vocals, especially the acapella part.
"Push Up Ya Lighter"- The rhodes and Bahamadia's entrance and exit (when the last part of her voice echoes).
"What They Do"- The end of the song instrumental. Love the lead and bass guitar.
"UNIverse At War"- The beginning when Common and Black Thought say "UNIverse.....at WAR..... WHEN UNIverse... at war mutha f---a.... we about to do this Chi-town style here we go (verse at war... verse war)."
"No Alibi"- The vocals by Fatin and Tracey. Whenever I here the humming, I have to hum along with it. And that "ONE...TWO... ONE TWO" by Black Thought caliborated with the keys.
"No Great Protender"- Rahzel with the vocal trumpet....Lovely!!!!!! The vocal "aaaaaaah" by Jazzy's.
"The Hypnotic"- I feel ?uest when he said that flute is banging. That flute is real nice. It reminds me of when I was a little kid and my parents would take me to the park to feed the ducks. It's just peaceful like that. Peace to D'angelo for that organ and those vocals at the end. I always nod my head to that part.
"Ital (The Universal Side)"- Keys and drums colaborate so lovely!!!
"One Shine"- That whole joint is lovely.... The Roots need a jazz album FOR REAL!!!!! That would definitely be bangin'!!!!!
-------------------------------------------------
"Table Of Contents- Part 1"- Keys are lovely!!!
"Table Of Contents- Part 2"- Again Keys are lovely!!!!
"The Next Movement"- The Jazzy's vocal (oooooh....aaaaaah....bum...bumm..buum...bumm...). The beginning with clap and the drum skip intro.
The bass guitar.
The outro after "Without A Doubt"- bass guitar and keys "It's The Roots Crew.....y'all...y'all..y'all...y'all (echo)". Especially when The Roots go straight from the outro right into "Ain't Sayin' Nothin' New".
"Double Trouble"- The drum break at the beginning going right into the addition of the Xylophone sounding instrument (not sure what it was).
"Act Too (Love of My Life)"- (Ay Yo!!!! Ay Yo!!!!! I was speakin'..... To my guy Riq'in) I love that part.
"Diedre Vs Dice"- The string bass
"You Got Me"- Of course, the ending when ?uest starts bangin' on those drums.... ?uest you read my mind when you did that part.... NAAH MEAN!!!!!
The Hidden Track on TFA- "YOU DON'T HAVE TO SPIT ON ME.... OK I'LL DO IT." I laugh at that part everytime.

Peace!!!!!!
"It's still The Black Knight (BurbKnight is for the legal purposes)"
http://members.tripod.com/~TheBlackKnight<;/a>

I've got plenty of em.....but here goes...a la ?uest and i'ma break it down album by album...
Organix....
Pass the popcorn....On tariq's last verse when he's rhyming just over the beat, completely in synch with the beat...just gets your head nodding..
Anti-Circle.....Inspector Gadget....when they are breaking it down and at the end, you get a "Get Down!" Love that part.
Good Music.....Bends over to pick up his sticks and his pants fall down...haha, I always laff at that part...btw, did that really happen??
DYWM
Title Track...BAG PIPES, and thought scratching at the end is a killer.
Silent Treatment....The sax at the end....When Tariq ends the chorus for the first time....from 5:35 to 5:50...I absolutely love that part. And the whistling too....tell me you don't try whistling that everytime.
The Lesson....Lookin over my left shoulder the mic still feel colder than before....DICE RAW...The Motherfuckin wild noid, get on the mic and perpetratin is void! Across your back Ka-KRACK!
The Unlocking....."Tell me what....What's my name??"
I remain Calm....I have ya headin for the water like a refugee from Haiti.
Illadelph....
Respond/React....that whole song is ill lyrically.....But I really dig the end of Tariq's last verse...shhh shhh shhh..That's the sound of they dynasty chant...we surround your camp, assumin the war stance, now bring it from the chest now let's dance......and when he "Introduces" Malik....M-Illa-Tant!
Panic, cuz that song is so dark and spooky.
Push Up ya Lighter...the kick and snare on that is lovely.
The Hypnotic...when Tariq starts his second verse....Hub changes the bassline slightly by adding in a couple notes.....I always thought that was so cool, and I wondered why he only does it once thru the whole song. Was that a mistake you guys left in ?uest???
All Right Ladies....Lights Out!!! *SLAM*
No Alibi...The hook on that song is just ridiculous. I love this song.
What they do...like quest said...the end is neato...everytime I listen to that song, the end makes me wanna pick up a bass and learn so I can play along.
I'll finish the rest tomorrow.....too much to think about....and my brain is mush right about now.
Phil

"Okayplayer.com, first the Web, next, the World!" - Phil copyright 1999
"Phil, You're a Genius" - Kayci Copyright 1999
"I'm not a genius, I just say what other people should be thinking." - Phil Copyright 1999
"Girl, you so chicken, your Grandfather's name is Colonel Sanders" - Phil Copyright 1999
