When I saw him touring in support of Brown Sugar (Angie Stone sang backup, BTW, GO BUY HER ALBUM!) D'Ang did a very good cover of the Ohio Players' Classic, "Sweet Sticky Thang". He also performed a wicked rendition of Al Green's "I'm So Glad You're Mine" which segued right into "Lady".
Damn, that set was hot!
"Let's take a long walk around the park after dark." - Jill Scott

>My pick Average White Band--"A Love of
>Your Own" (this is one of
>my favorites of all time)
That would be some ish. That song is one of the most slept on love songs of all time.
I would be interested in what "The Ballad of Dorothy Parker" would sound like. that's my favorite Prince song so I could defintiely live without it being covered.
Additionally, another song that's dear to my heart thatI'd be interested in hearing D cover is Donny Hathaway's "Someday We'll All Be Free". That song is the soundtrack and the blueprint to life IMO. A few have tried to cover it (Aretha did a nice job on the Malcolm X soundtrack) but none have really been able to capture the essence of that song. Donny and D'ang have different sounds, Donny usually sang with a much deeper voice.
Ok that's it for now.
"Let's take a long walk around the park after dark." - Jill Scott

i gots mad respect for your knowledge so i'll just say d' should approach Donny very carefully. they both kill a rhodes but that's not the same as saying he'll do the music justice.
i love d' but i don't see him really expresing "For All We Know" or "Giving Up" or your choice "Someday We'll All Be Free" quite yet. It's like he hasn't been in THAT place that Donny opened up for you with his music (and life).
Now put him on "To Be Young, Gifted and Black" first? Say hells yeah and put me up front. He might have to prove it to me on Donny's heavier stuff. Feel me?
just my thoughts,
bc
"I draw a crowd like an architect"-Rakim

>i gots mad respect for your knowledge
Why, thank you
>so i'll just say d' should
>approach Donny very carefully.
ANYONE, should approach Donny carefully. I totally agree with ya. I really have no interest in seeing ANYONE cover his material to be honest. his work is just so unbelievable, yet so few heads really know about this brother apart from the Roberta Flack duets.

>they both kill a rhodes but that's not
>the same as saying he'll do the music justice. i >love d' but i don't see him really
>expresing "For All We Know" or
>"Giving Up" or your choice "Someday
>We'll All Be Free" quite yet.
I have to agree with you, I was just thinking out loud. I'm gonna start a Donny thread in the Lesson one of these days, but there are few vocalisst that reach the depth of expression that Donny did in his songs. I mean "For All We Know" and "A Song for You" are standards that have been covered by everyone from Carmenr McRae to the Temptations to Mel Torme. But Donny makes the songs that he perfroms his own in a way that very few artists in the last twenty years have been able to do. For example "Nina Simone/Weldon Irvine's "To Be Young Gifted and Black". Now I love me some Nina and she puts work in on her song no doubt, but for me Donny's rendition is the official version. "Giving up", whew!! Don't get me started on that one. I can go on forever about Donny. But I do feel that D'Ang, while definitewly not where Donny was showed me something with his cover of "heaven Must Be Like This" peep my post about that song.
>It's like he hasn't been in THAT place that Donny >opened up for you with his music (and life).
Again, I don't know, "Heaven Must Be Like This" put me in that place that Donny puts me in with "Someday We'll All be Free" and Stevie puts me with "Heaven is Ten Zillion Light Years Away", but overall I'll agree. And Voodoo is a much diffeent vibe from "Everything is Everything" and "Extension of a Man".
>Now put him on "To Be Young, Gifted and Black" >first? Say hells yeah and put me up front. He >might have to prove it to me on Donny's heavier >stuff. Feel me?
I feel ya! I would love to hear him sing that (I hereby rescind my request for "Someday We'll All Be Free") although Donny's will always be the "official" version
"Let's take a long walk around the park after dark." - Jill Scott

But they're sounds are different, as you said...but damnit, I want him to do "A Love of Your Own"...I can just imgaine the level he'd take it...plus, he has the funky guitarists to do it (if the ones at Key Club are going to be his band)
Oh Mighty Drummer ?uest, you think its possible?
I know this is a huge stretch, but I'm thinking about songs that are heavy with keys....like some Nina Simone (stop looking at me like that!)
Any more possible covers?
"Punch your clock, but never end your day..."--Jaguar
Peace and Love

i'll have to make a plug for Al and Marvin...
there are many possible choices here but i'd vote for 'Love & Tenderness' and 'Make Me Wanna Holler'. It's clear that D's the heir to the funky lover man throne held by those two. I have to admit I've slept on Donny Hathaway (despite my love for Roberta), but my friend just this weekend (!) was telling me about how he's been listening to him on the reg. Any suggestions on DH 101?
We also shouldn't forget there are many songs out there sung by women worthy of the d'angelic attention...Rock Steady by Aretha anyone?
adamant
ps we've gotta get some traffic on this board! it feels so sad when I check on it after two or three hours and there are no new posts. c'mon y'all...
"Not until you have heard Rakim on a rocky mountaintop have you heard hip-hop." -- Saul Williams

Thankfully! The greatest hits album "The Donny Hathaway Colection" does a fine job of covering Donny's work. The set starts off with "A Song for You" and just goes on to "Giving Up", "Someday We'll All Be Free", "The Ghetto", "To Be Young, Gifted and Black", etc. plus some of the Roberta Flack duets. After you become addcited to that CD, I suggest you go and get "Everything is Everything" and "Extension of a Man" These two albums really fill out the genius of Donny's work with tracks taht aren't on the collection.
"Everything is Everything (1970)" is his first album and demonstrates his musical vision from the outset with "Voices Inside", "I Believe To My Soul", "tryin Times" and "Thank You MAster (For My Soul)".
"Extension of A Man (1973)" is Donny's Third album (the second being Donny Hathaway-released in 1971). The spirituality and the depth of his expression are all over this album with songs like "Love, Love, Love" and the amazing instrumental track kinda in the vein of Coltrane's A Love Supreme "I Love the Lord, He Heard Me Cry (pts I & II)"
And you gotta pick "Donny Hathaway Live". Hell pick up "Donny Hathaway" while you're at it to complete the set.
"Let's take a long walk around the park after dark." - Jill Scott

Don't forget Curtis Mayfield. D could difinitly bring a new element to "keep on Pushin", "The making of you", or "If theres a hell below". I not gonna even mention the whole superfly soundtrack. And as funky as he has been lately, He could hurt some Sly and the Famill Stone.
Peace,
Slim
aka.....been there, done that.
well in the four years of making this album you can best believe that we spent much time jamming. there has to be at least 200 90 minute dats of us doing other people's shit. to the point that we could easily relese em.
prince- every song ever written. our best songs are:
-she's always in....(of course)
-the ballad of dorthy parker (first song we ever did, after we made "the hypnotic" we said all of 9 words to each other. lot of frontin goin on. and then this song broke the ice. matter of fact, we did the whole catlouge "lady cab driver", all of "parade", and most of sign o the times.
this was a testing period. sort of a way to see who can out prince each other. i mean down to the wire.......the little solo lisa does in "mountains" on the coda......every snare lick on "lady cab driver". all the cymbal crashes on "automatic". brown mark's bassline on "i wonder u". prince spelling the word p-u-s-s-y on the dl on "new postion". everything. stuff that we only thought we heard (clair fisher's string arrangemet on "starfish and coffee" i could've sworn was for my ears only.) so after wards when i worked on "baduism" d came down to visit and we started having the first of a billion jam sessions.
roy ayers
herbie hancock
thelonius monk
marva whitney
james brown
earth wind and fire
bobby womack
the time
rick james (our cover of "ghetto life" is killer)
marvin gaye
slum village
joe tex
ohio players
miles davis
sly and the family stone
walter hawkins
bb king
jimi hendrix (for a while there we toyed with the idea of opening the record with "have you ever been to (electric ladyland)"
joe jackson (yes we did "stepping out")
gang starr (next album he's gonna introduce a new style in which his back round vocals will be sung in primoesque fashion)
when will this come out? i donno. i'm sure we will think of something

"....start your own company??!? your parents don't have enough money to buy you a company!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

OK player enough is enough!!!
First you posted about "running" into Jay Dee from Slum and being "invited" to the studio with him and getting to listen to all types of tracks. What????? Maybe I could let that one slide on some X-Files shit.
But your post's always seem to be JayDee and Slum related.
Let see...
Hmmmmm..............
And now you heard a couple of those D'Ang "around the world and back" jam sessions glorious DATS?
Eff that!
You are Jay Dee and I'm not trying to hear anything otherwise. Come out of the shadows my friend enough is enough!

"Let's take a long walk around the park after dark." - Jill Scott

1) My name is Jeffrey David, therefore J.D.
2) I am from the D., therefore DET313(area code)
3) My boy has been real tight with JayDee since around '93, therefore we always make ventures to Jay's crib...if _________ (insert name of one of your favorite producers here) lived in your backyard and you had access to hearing his shit, wouldn't u do the same???
4) If i were Jaydee, why would i come on the Roots web site posing as someone else and ride my own jock? That would be some pretty egotistical, self-serving shit- two things that the REAL jaydee is not. He is a very cool and very humble person.
5) Detroit's hip hop circle is a very small one, as well as the city isn't that big, so yes, you do just run into people.
6) I never stated that i was JayDee in ANY post or reply. If i talk about JayDee/ Slum Village alot, I'm sorry. Detroit has not had any group or sound (hip hop wise) since Motown that has defined the city or represented its people and i think Esvee may be the first to do that (in my opinion). So of course, i want to expose people to them as much as i can- ecspecially since after the "Slum Village Wars" ?uest won't bring it up (i don't blame u). I think Jay is the next great producer (he already is, but just wait...), and i feel Esvee's style- their album is incredible!
In closing, I'm sorry if some of y'all asumed i was jayDee because of any of the aforementioned reasons. And i'm sorry if you haven't heard Slum's album (no, its never gonna come out), or you think JayDee broke up Tribe (they lost their direction, and tried to ride JayDee's style), but i am not him...sorry if i disappointed u. I'm just a fan like everyone else. Peace.

Did Interscope drop SV?

...or you think JayDee broke up Tribe (they lost their direction, and tried to ride JayDee's style)
People get mad when I tell them that but it's true!!!! Everything that Ali Shaheed has produced lately (with the exception of the track he did for Mos Def's new joint and in particular regarding the two cuts he did for Eric Benet) sounds like JAYDEE'S WORK!!!! Also true to this is the fact that Jaydee has been tapped to produce solo joints for QTip and Phife??? ...why the hell should he devote recording and performing time to covers?
I mean I'm a musician myself, and everybody who's ever been around knows that I'll play EWF, pre-JT Kool and the Gang, WAR, Ohio Players (Westbound and Mercury) and CTI stuff all day!! Hey, ALL OF US like to do that!
BUT...
The brotha has a musical identity of his OWN that hasn't even been fully explored and realized, but yet folks are pullin' up lists of OTHER people's songs they want to hear him cover or re-make (yeah, there's a difference between the two; ask me and I'll explain).
Now, a cover song in a concert is fine; maybe one per album or something...but, for me, I'd rather hear what D'Angelo could do of his own. Not everyone can fuck with somebody else's song, but not everyone can make a contribution of their own either. Just because he might have a resemblance to the great soul brothas of the past doesn't mean that I want to hear him do THEIR songs.
Hell, if anything, let him do HIS thing so that other people will be trying to cover and re-make HIS stuff. Let him leave HIS mark...or make a deeper one.

I don't think anyone was trying to steer D from his vision or was asking himn to just do covers. It's just a din and a "wish" list. that's all player!
I'm with you. I totally feel artists, young artists especially, should avoid recording covers, (at the most one per album)and develop an identity. The covers should be saved for the live show. D has followed this pattern.
However, like in jazz, any good musisician should be well versed in the standards and should be able to interpret or cover them (which is different from just recording a song). I think the "wish list" that folks discussed here contains the R&B standards to some degree.
"I ain't trying to dis, but I don't be trying to fuck with Limp Bizkit" - Mos Def

I think he would bring a whole different vibe to this song. Or he could try "Memories" - i could see him @ the piano singing that 1.
Since KC sang the hell out of "Love Ballad"- it wouldn't make sense for D to cover it too but that would've suited him too.
