"***** ROOTS you better READ THIS! *****"

Just a little message from my homie Broke at the University of Washington.
First and foremost, Peace and Love to Rahzel The Godfather of Noize this doesn't apply to you(Thanks for treating me with respect at the Elements of HipHop tour in Vancouver 97 w/Common). Unlike every single person who seems to post on your website and rides your nuts. I come to post my frustration with your hypocracy(sp?) and arrogance. On numerous occasions you have completely shitted on the Pacific Northwest. Well that is where I reside and I take offense to that. This may not be entirely your fault, but you must take at the very least partial blame for this. The Roots have continually done shows in Seattle at the Showbox. This is a 21 & Over venue that serves alcohol. Now that's cool, I ain't mad at y'all for that. However, each and everytime you have come to Seattle you have either performed there, or done a no-show(ahmmm...Bumbershoot). If you guys are supposedly all for the preservation of the hiphop culture as you all so claim. Why is it you virtually ignore the hiphop youth. You all seem to forget that the youth is the future and present of hiphop. The youth have always dictated who deserves monolithic status. Right now despite what all your fanatics claim, you haven't proven to come remotely close to a Public Enemy. You don't show respect for all of the fans that support you. Shit, I have all your albums, but that don't mean I'm just gonna keep getting shitted on by all of you guys. I am not saying I am giving up on you guys yet. I will say that I know for a fact that heads in Seattle have come into ?uestlove about at least appearing and blowing down a few joints at an all-ages venue somehow. But Qwestchun has IGNORED these requests. Well I would hate to see you guys lose the support of thousands(Don't fool yourself, those Hippies/Grungers ain't true fans) of HIPHOP fans to some petty bullshit. I trust you guys will come to your senses and at least make an appearance at an all-ages location. My suggestion would be the University of Washington. Don't worry, by the way. I will email you ?uestlove and be sure you will read this message again if you don't. Until you guys show some respect to your fans, FUCK THE ROOTS.
broke
Seattle, WA USA - Monday, November 08, 1999 at 13:15:30 (CST)
"We all be kinda fly, just can't be afraid to spread your wings."
-Dre of Outkast "ATLiens"

You sir should not ever be allowed to see a concert by the Roots.
I know if you said some shit like that to *me*, you'd be in for a beat-down.
I would suggest this post be deleted from the message board, for I find it IGNORANT to the EXTREME (like Vanilla Ice) and offensive.
I would further suggest you put on your Eddie Bauer jacket and go back to watching Romper Room.

I live in the NW too and I don't agree at all. The Roots have done a lot of shows here in Portland over the past 5 years, and as far as I know ALL of them have been at all-ages venues. In fact, they're playing the Roseland on the 22nd, and it will undoubtedly be an all-ages show. The problem may have more to do with businesses in Seattle trying to keep young people out of the clubs than anything with the Roots. Anyway, that post was uncalled for so let's please just let it die.
peace,
murph

the Seattle promoters are hating. You were wrong about the post being uncalled for. Why do you find it uncalled for? Is the purpose of this website to dickride the roots and not allow anybody who posts something remotely critical about the group? Tell me? Drop it? I think not. It is an important issue that needs to be addressed because the Roots are not the only group that have done this. They do however deserve partial responsibility because they ultimately make the final decision on "what they do"

I understand your frustrations my man, but lets think about this rationally shall we???
The Roots, being that they roll with a crew as deep as MC Hammer did back in the day, and before this album, really didn't make doodly squat from record sells, make almost all their dough from touring the earth. Why would they purposely avoid seattle????? or avoid playing at all age venues in WA??? YOU CAN'T PLAY AT A VENUE UNLESS SOMEONE ASKS YOU TO. So go get all your frustrated buddies and go to the university of washington or some other place and lobby to get them to invite the roots to perform. That's like me bitching you out and call you a sissy ass sucker cuz you won't come to NYC and let me buy you dinner, even though I'm not willing to pay for your trip here. Doesn't make much sense does it???
Anyway, that's all. I understand your pain buddy, but just think about this whole thing a little bit more thoroughly.

We have made the contact before, but not a response...Questionably 4 Tha Love only responded to my post just now. We will see how the future works out. I stand by my post. You make some good points though. It is true that the Roots ain't making shit from their album sales. But they signed the dotted line. They have all the fan support in the world and name power to go the indie route through the internet like Public Enemy, Chuck D, and Poor Righteous Teachers have. Speaking of which, check out the new PRT cuts at www.rapstation.com They are off the hinges!

HEY DUMMY! Groups are represented by agencies, agencies book gigs, agencies contact promoters, then send info to tour managers (i.e me) or operation managers, (i.e Miyoshi) and we make the shit happen. People ask to go to Japan all the time but if it DON'T MAKE DOLLAS IT DON'T MAKE SENSE (WESTSIIIIIIIDE) DUH. I fyo had one clue as to anything you speak of . . . that's why I went UCLA, maybe the cold air has fucked with your brain, or maybe you're 19 and just coming into college and talking shit, I remember it well . . .use all of the words in your literature vocabulary book, try to showcase yourself as a literary whizkid . . . I got a fake I/D in college just b/c that's how you do it when you're a snot-faced kid. We all had to go through it. It doesn't mean you're shitted on it menas WE HAVE TO PAY FUCKING BILLS. Oh yeah, but you're still riding the nuts of the financial aid office so you couldn't possibly know what it's like . . .oh yeha you have a job. Well b/c you have to work, don't you think the University is shitting on you? Or the world. You'e whack! You can't go, isn't there a curfew at your dorm or something??
As fo the others, I know Bumpershoot was fucked up, trust me, I was there and DID NOT want to be. People fuck up, and I think they are allowed to. They ust have to deal with the consequence. HTis little piddly flea, I can't believe Quest is paying any attention to. Or any other muthafuckas who can't add. People don't make money from albums that go gold only sweetheart, mmmkay? I know it's difficult for y'all to understand. Just take the pacifier out of your mouth and try to listen for one minute.
Flights cost about $600/person to go out there hotels roughly $100 -$200 depending on where you are . . .why am I explaining this to you??
You're a dork.
Tiny

I can post as long as I want to whenever I want to as I have to deal with triflin' mofo's like yourself. I don't have the luxury of being on a computer all day everyday. Ya see, I work. Honey please, I don't "need" to do anything but stay black and die. The need you feel to diss a group based on the 2 year old thing, and or b/c you thin one person can change the minds of a record label, booking agent, and the likes is ridiculous. Question: Is it possible for you to have or be part of a discusion with out attacking an individual personally? I'm just wondering.
Anywayz!
If YOU have a degree then i'm even more disappointed in the North American school system than i ever was before, since not only don't you know how to speak an intelligent word, but your ass doesn't even know how to read properly let alone do some research. I didn't diss the band, and if you had scrolled through the posts and taken a moment to read what i had written in here, instead of hopping on the bandwagon trying to get attention, then you would have known that. Whatever school you got your degree from must have specialized in remedial.
I'm quoting you: "my post was telling you to know the system, not just running your mouth to hear yourself speak".
Your post did nothing of the sort, all it did was ridicule and patronize, there was barely and ounce of sense in anything you said (notice i said barely, i don't like to write people completely off). If you had come with that drama in the beginning then i wouldn't have said anything, but to come along seventy-something posts later and just regurgitate the same ish is just plain stupid ish and all i did, was call you on it. Seems to me that if you're as much of a grown man as you say you are then you would have been able to take it with a grain of salt. The fact that you didn't makes it pretty clear whose still reading Mother Goose and Nursery Rhymes. No wonder you were able to critique my shit.

P.S. Seems to me work doesn't keep your monkey ass busy enough. Can i suggest overtime?

i mean, what am i supposed to respond to this in a speedy manner? specially when i'm doin all i can to fix the situation at hand. it's bad enough that no promoter could be hired to do a show up there for this cheap ass price (tix are only $5 plus service charges), so in the end to do this damn near free ass seattle/portland show i gotta miss thanksgiving at my ailing grandmother's and do 6 other shows afterwards so that we don't fall in the red.......
.............so again.....am i supposed to be motivated or somethin? tell me

"....start your own company??!? your parents don't have enough money to buy you a company!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

first off, as to the guy who's pist in Seattle, you really need to chill. I completely agree with you that all shows outta be all ages. Restricting someone from a a show because of their age is just as bad as excluding someone because of their race or releigion. it's fucking stupid. however, you need to realize that bands don't always have the control of where they play. I don't worship the Roots as gods or anything either, keeping that in mind you need to realize that are only human and trying to make a living. One more point you made was that "the hippies and grungers ain't true fans". That's asinine!!!!! Anyone who supports the Roots, digs the music, and keeps an open mind is a TRUE FAN. You need to expand your horizons. Now for quest, just curious as to why the seattle show is 5 bones, yet the SF/Petaluma shows cost me 25 bucks a pop. I ain't complaining though, I know you guys will be worth it. But with those prices in mind, at 20 a head, with a couple thousand at each show, how are u guys in the red? much smaller bands are doing just fine. take care,
-eli
PS-See you guys in 2 weeks!

I certainly would pay more than $5 for your show, but you guys set the price not me. If you guys are almost in the red then there's something really wrong. MCA must be pimpin you guys quite nicely. You should go the independent route and put out your own stuff and take control of your music. My motivation is to get you guys to play an all-ages show by posting something my homie wrote. If that can't be done, then you can bet I'll be sneaking into wherver the show is thrown.
"We all be kinda fly, just can't be afraid to spread your wings."
-Dre of Outkast "ATLiens"

Check the tourdates often?? Nov. 23rd is just around the corner. I hope for all the other seattle heads that they find a willing venue, but in your case... i hope you get SHIT ON again.
You REALLY consider yourself a fan?? Then get your ass in the car and go to a show. Make a road trip out of it. since last March, I have driven a total of 28 hours to see roots shows. Spent 8 hours on a greyhound for the same purpose too. No matter how much I try, The Roots aren't gonna be playing in my backyard when I wake up in the morning.
Life isn't convenient bud. I am a full time college student. I deliver papers and bus tables. I do not have a car, so for me I have no means to get to Portland. I applaud you for taking an 8 hour bus trip to see the Roots. You are a true fan. Would you like a cookie too? I got Macadamia Nut and Chocolate Chip. I take the bus to see shows. What is your point? That you have the time to take an 8 hour trip to prove how down you are?

Yes, i, the pissed off seattle okayplayer am now defending the roots..!
First off, i do feel that the roots have kinda "shitted" on seattle in the past, and i was once a quite upset person because of it. And to all of you doggin my irate friend here, he wouldn't be so pissed if he didn't really like the roots... kinda tough love in a way, guess... not that i think taking the approach he did was the right one.
on to the defending... the roots, specifically quest, have made some pretty damn admerable attempts to correct their wrongs. quest has personaly told me that the show is going to be all ages. do you know why? because i (and im sure others) emailed him asking for to be so! The show WAS going to be at the showbox. it would have been 21 , and god knows how expensive. But the show is going to be all ages, and, according to quest, very cheap. So, if seattle was once dogged by the mighty roots, at least now they're wiping it off, so to speak, and trying to right the wrong they committed a few months ago. And you gotta respect that.
So, on behalf of myself and all my friends who are (almost =)as big fans of the roots as i am, thank you quest, for making the effort. And if you cant find a venue by the 23, i know it'll happen sometime soon, because their are way more people in seattle who feel as i do than there are people who feel as Marc here does. now, thats not to say that i didn't feel betrayed at one time by the roots, but, man, if this was any other group, you wouldn't even have the chance to vent like that! i know, i did it at one time, and quest actually responded to me personally. thats some shit! they've got a whole world to deal with, we are a little corner of the US.
Finally, i hope that post my marc didn't kill your motivation to persue the all ages show in seattle, quest, although id hate to see you miss thanksgiving and all... if it comes down to it, i'll find some way to make it to portland and i'll check yall out there.
- eagerly awaiting my chance to finally see the roots live, marius

aside from listening to hip hop, I listen to a lot of punk rock and $5 is the normal price for a show. Even the most popular bands such as Green Day rarely charge more than 10 bucks and they are making a fine living. I really don't find charging $5 such a charity. The Roots will still be getting paid for the show, and they'll still be racking in $25 a T-Shirt. All this for doing something they truly love. I don't feel sorry for them one bit.

-Eli

ESPECIALLY in a genre like punk or hardcore....
i seen sick of it all (quite established, heads never heard of them, it's THEIR problem) twice for FREE, at least 4 other times for between $5 and $10. i saw H2O for $5 twice (they're established too, only 4 records but trust me). agnostic front plays for $5-10 all the time. see, these bands just don't usually go through the types of promoters hip hop acts go through because hardcore and punk is so DIY (do it yourself). most of the promoters in a city are just kids from the local scene who know how to get a show organized. see, all it takes in HC is a venue, a PA, somebody who knows some sound, somebody for security, and a SHITLOAD of flyers. i won't get the electric factory but i could get 200 people in a VFW every weekend for 6 months if i can keep bringin the bands. some hip hop could use the DIY approach, but that's not gonna happen, and heads should just stop complaining.
http://www.thehungersite.com<;/a>
"Where the F*CK is my purse icon??????"

ESPECIALLY
>in a genre like punk or
>hardcore....
punk and hip-hop are apples and oranges.
again.......hip-hop is what we are speaking of. naw, eff that, fine any genre we can speak on. but in order for any act to do an extensive amount of shows, mind you, around the clock on more than 20 countries. the argument here is not "who is an established artist, the argument here tink, is why am i being challenged like i'm ripping off some people with a $5 dollar show (that was all ages to begin with, so this post wouldn't even be needed if mofo's would do a lil' investigation) so if i sound like i'm on the edge.......damn right i'm on the edge.

>i seen sick of it all (quite
>established, heads never heard of them,
>it's THEIR problem) twice for FREE,
>at least 4 other times for
>between $5 and $10. i
>saw H2O for $5 twice (they're
>established too, only 4 records but
>trust me). agnostic front plays
>for $5-10 all the time.
okay. once again. es-tab-lish-ed. by industry standards (gold record at least, hit single, a video at least 7 times a week, a major story in a major periodical).....or whoever. i'm sorry but even though i've heard of these bands i've not seen them in the least sense on mtv ("blah blah blah from h2o got arrested this week for.....") following or no following sorry but they could release a volume of ish the size of prince's catalouge. but still this is not the point.

>see, these bands just don't usually
>go through the types of promoters
>hip hop acts go through because
>hardcore and punk is so DIY
>(do it yourself). most of
>the promoters in a city are
>just kids from the local scene
>who know how to get a
>show organized. see, all it
>takes in HC is a venue,
>a PA, somebody who knows some
>sound, somebody for security, and a
>SHITLOAD of flyers. i won't
>get the electric factory but i
>could get 200 people in a
>VFW every weekend for 6 months
>if i can keep bringin the
>bands. some hip hop could
>use the DIY approach, but that's
>not gonna happen, and heads should
>just stop complaining.
again tink. this was not the focus of the debate. i know you meant well, and i'm not tryin to yank your chain, but this has nothing to do with the matter at hand...
"....start your own company??!? your parents don't have enough money to buy you a company!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

for for siding with me on this. this also shows that true fans of the Roots don't only listen to "hip hop" yet are able to expand their horizons. It's good to see that not everyone on this site takes the Roots side on everything. Quest is obviously a very intelligent man, but he isn't god. no disrespect.
-eli

Even
does a show for $5 or less........
Absolutely, A.F.I., a punk band from the bay area who have been around for many years and are very widely known by those who listen to that style of music, Mr. T Experience same genre (though they usually charge like 7 bucks), Fugazi, who I'm sure you've heard of never plays for more than 6 dollars.

uh, green day and i share the same agency and the last i checked, their last tour was regular
tour price, $17.50-$25.00
their SF shows weren't that price, but maybe that is because they are from here.

I really
>don't find charging $5 such a
>charity.
then you sir are sadly mist----clueless. you gonna look me in the eye and tell me that tribe,
or cypress, or cube, or eminem, or gangstar shows are $3.00? you must be stuck in 1967.
or a cheap ass motherf#$%er.

look, I'm paying $20 to see you guys twice in San Francisco, I think the show is definately worth it. You can charge what people will pay. I'm not saying that you should charge $5. I'm just saying that it isn't so unusual. Obviously those bands don't charge $5, there is absolutely nothing wrong with charging more if you feel you are worth it.

The Roots will still
>be getting paid for the show,
is your name: tina farris? or perhaps richard nichols? or maybe myoshi smith? you gots to
be cause i don't recall having a fool named elmic on payroll. cause only those people are
privy to my info as to whether not i get paid. how dare you speak upon my situation with
convivtion and authority as if you "know that it's no sweat off my back"

are you saying that you aren't getting paid? I have no idea how much you are getting paid, but somehow I doubt your getting nothing. If you are not then, you should do something about it, because for the show you put on, you deserve it.

>and they'll still be racking in
>$25 a T-Shirt.
even if that was the case (which it isn't) what, you think we get to pocket that loot? no.
hell no, that would be spent on maintaining this site so that you can say some more
ignorant shit
as for the $25 shirts, I saw you guys in Boston this summer and that was how much ya'll were charging for shirts. There's nothing wrong with that, if that's what the fans are willing to pay. And I should also mention that I really think it's great that you maintain a website like this.

......anybody ask you to feel sorry for me?

i swear. i'm cool with lettin motherfucker'spost what they want. but don't think for one
second that im letting someone say something ignorant without a response..........fuck that
shit.

I'm glad you responded, but I don't think that my comments are ignorant at all. I'm merely pointing out that $5 for a show isn't such a rarity. And you never asked anyone to feel sorry for you, another fan implied. I regret that line.
take care,
Eli

But they have the ultimate say in where they perform. Mos Def has made it a point that he will not perform in a venue that serves alcohol. So don't tell me for one second that they are completely innocent. What the fuck does Sir Mix A Lot have to do with anything? You are obviously very ignorant to Hiphop in the Pacific Northwest. So you don't deserve much else of a reply.

No that you are in your "reasonable phase."
Do you know how the ULTIMATE AUTHORITY an artist has to playing in a town? They have the option of playing OR NOT PLAYING. They don't get the option of picking and chosing much. If the promoter (the one who guarntees the money) says all he can book is 21 and up, that's where they play. Why can he only book 21 and up? Sometimes it's the size of a venue. Not many BARS will close the bar for a show without getting reimbursed for lost sales. Sometimes it's the insurance risk, remeber all these events have to be insured, and under age mayhem (don't see many 35 year olds moshing) cost more to insure. Sometimes it's security. Some security agencies charge more for an all ages show.
How do *I* know this? Coz I worked as a "promoter" in San Diego years back.
How can YOU help get the ARTIST you want in your town at your venues of choice? Become a promoter. Go work for a promoter. Call your local promoter's office and make suggestions as to what talent you want in town.
As for your earlier Mr. Hyde post, all that shit about "Do what I want or FUCK YOU ROOTS!" is not endearing you to anyone.
If you want to make a differnce BE the differnce. (Some trite shit.)
-Tom Hayes

Public Enemy, Hieroglyphics, Styles of Beyond, Freestyle Fellowship, Duckdown Records used to back in the day and were kinda pioneers with the whole conversing with the fans thing. Problem But who's counting. I think its really dope that the roots are conversating with there fans. Why else would I voice my frustrations. I just find it funny how its nobody's business who I say FUCK off to but that particular person. Yet all these Roots seamen were ready to take a bullet for their commander in cheif. Its kinda sad really. Although I can't lie, I would take a bullet for Chuck D, Muhammed Ali, and Grandmaster Caz. I could throw a few more in their but you get the point. But that is actually a bullet. I wouldn't defend them when someone attacks them. That's their job.

I sit here baffled as to how and why this has become such a big issue.
I love the roots, I don't go to every concert. Matter of fact I only been to three since '94. It would never cross my mind to be so heated at them. Maybe seattle fans are more serious about hip hop than us in NYC. Then again, I've been listening to hip hop since 1979, and buying albums since 1983 my roots run deep in this music my music.
I would never in my wildest dreams make such a big stink over not being able to go to a show by my favorite artist, and then tell them when they are finally trying to get the show together, that they are basically not doing it well enough.
On top of that, I would never take a bullet for no hip hop artist either (well, maybe Kool Keith). What's going on in the world today?? Why have we turned our music into such a serious matter. The bottom line is this IT'S JUST MUSIC. IF ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE ARTISTS IS NOT LIVING UP TO YOUR EXPECTATIONS, DON'T GET ALL MAD AND LOSE SLEEP OVER IT!!!!!!!!!
I'm not gonna defend the roots cuz I don't know what they promised you or if they were assholes to you. That's not the point the point is that this is all not worth the aggravation. Maybe cuz I am older than you cats I gotta better perspective on the whole thing. I don't know, this is all just a little bit overboard for me.

That's why a show like this is so important. Every time a national act comes to town it helps the hip-hop community that much more. You are lucky enough to live in NYC which is the Mecca of hip-hop. When you email Questlove numerous times without a response the only way to reach him is by making it everyone's business. Only then will he respond because of that. Personally I'm doing my best to help build the scene. But The Roots playing at an all-ages venue can only benefit everyone involved.
"We all be kinda fly, just can't be afraid to spread your wings."
-Dre of Outkast "ATLiens"

I dont speak for anybody but myself on how I feel about what I read in your boys letter. I dont think anybody is ever satisfied with how often they perform in our areas, but we dont lash out on some bullshit, we just wait patiently for them to show back up knowing/hoping they will reappear. Artists perform wherever they get booked regardless of age limits or whatever. Its up to your boy and other similar people in his age group to stimulate some kind of demand so that a place will want to have the roots do a show. Or he can nicely try to speak to the manager of the place and say "im not here to drink, I just want to see a good show, Im a big fan", but bringing that drama here was the wrong place. I dont think they're saying "fuck seattles nirvana lovin asses, we were on geffen too, shoulda supported us back then". I doubt that they have much control over the venues they get booked in. Make sure he reads this just like he was tellin people what they had better read, so that he has a better understanding of how these things work.

In response to Reply # 0

Here are the issues as I see them:
- People in the Northwest feel shitted on by the
Roots. As much as many of you dick riders would
like to say it's not so, this appears to be the
case, at least in a Northwest fan's mind. This is due the Roots pulling a dissappearing act at
Bumbershoot (I know, a message was sent but I
bet no more than 20% of OKPlayers got it before
the show...and what about the Roots fans who
aren't on OKPlayer.com?...how the fuck would
they know the Roots weren't coming?) And now,
it is my understanding that the Roots have
cancelled a couple of Northwest shows.
- To those of you bitching about how you live in
BFE (that's bum fucked egypt to the rest of ya):
It's not the fair for you to whine about how you
have to travel to see the Roots. If you live in a small town it makes sense that the Roots
aren't coming there. If you live in Seattle
(which is by all means a "large" city), you
would expect the Roots to show up there and not
have to travel 400 miles.
- As far as all ages venues go: The Roots should
make it a point to book all ages venues (much
like Mos does w/ his no alcohol shows). As I've
stated in the guestbook, I can almost certainly guarantee you that at least 60-65% of Roots fans
are not of legal age. If you play at 21 venues
you're locking out your biggest fanbase. And as
far as dealing w/ promoters (remember, I'm not
in the biz so I'm willing to admit that I don't
know for sure how this works), any promoter,
would seemingly want the Roots. You are guaranteed a sell out at almost any Roots show and
seeing how theRoots are by most accounts a "peaceful" group, a promoter would have to worry
about violence at a show and whatnot. I think
it is more the Roots management's fault that
they book an 21 show..but again...I don't work
for the Roots so I'm only guessing (so don't go
off on me!) And you can understand how an
underage kid would be pissed that they had a
good chance to see the Roots in a nice venue
where they didn't have to do anything illegal
to get in the show, and then the show was
cancelled (Bumbershoot). I think all of you
jock riders (who seem to think the Roots are
impervious to criticism by the way...why is
that?) should try to put yourself in a 17 yo
kids shoes who has just paid 15 bucks for what
he hopes is the best show of his life only to
find out that his favorite group has chosen not
to show up.
And don't think I'm a hater...I have every Roots album (and I mean every single one). I've been to
shows like the rest of you. As a matter of fact,
I just shelled out 28 bucks (including tax) to buy
the Roots live album just so I could remember how
nice they sound live. Just because I'm a fan (like the rest of you) doesn't mean the Roots aren't
above being called out when shit ain't sweet. You all need to re-examine before you judge.
Anyhow, I've said enough for now...I'll pick apart the rest of your arguments later. Peace to
MarcOne and Broke (you know who it is...check the email kids...see you at the SHOW meeting).
PEACE!
>To those of you bitching about
>how you live in
> BFE (that's
>bum fucked egypt to the rest
>of ya):
> It's not the fair
>for you to whine about how
>you
> have to travel to
>see the Roots. If you live
>in a small town it makes
>sense that the Roots
> aren't
>coming there.
First off, I wouldn't make fun of anybody's town. Second off, if you're serious about building your town's hip-hop scene (as someone, possibly you, noted) and you can't book the Roots, BOOK SOMEONE ELSE. Since when were the Roots the only hip-hop act in the world? I don't get this at all...

> -
>As far as all ages venues
>go: The Roots should
> make
>it a point to book all
>ages venues (much
> like Mos
>does w/ his no alcohol shows).
Relatively speaking, Mos Def doesn't do that many shows (ESPECIALLY compared to the Roots). I would wager good money that his 'no alcohol' pledge has a lot to do with that.
The Roots don't "book" the venues, the promoter does. Here's how it works (in the case of Mr. Def, hypothetically): Promoter X contacts Mos Def and says, I have Y amount of money to pay you. Mos says "Is there alcohol in the venue you wanna have the show in?" If the promoter says "yes", mos asks the promoter to find another venue or the show's off. Mos does NOT (I'll bet the house) call around Promoter X's city trying to find a non-alcoholic venue to perform in; that's the promoter's job. same goes with the Roots and whether they perform in all-ages venues.
In this particular case, the Roots went out of their way to insist on an all ages venue. I wager they had problems finding a promoter to agree to book them for a $5 all ages show. why? The money is fucked and the range of venues is limited, two headaches no promoter wants to deal with.
Yo, cats need to learn more about this game before they speak on it, for real...
>And as
> far as dealing w/
>promoters (remember, I'm not
> in
>the biz so I'm willing to
>admit that I don't
> know for
>sure how this works), any promoter,
> would seemingly want the Roots.
It's not just the promoter that has to want them...the venue has to want to house the show as well...the venue has to be strategically located (you know, easy to get to, decent parking, etc), there are a couple of factors you aren't discussing (I only went through two, if you want more, e-mail me)...
>You are guaranteed a sell out
>at almost any Roots show
No such thing as a "guaranteed sell out"...everything has to be properly promoted, et cetera...but yes, the Roots are popular...
>
>seeing how the Roots are by most
>accounts a "peaceful" group, a promoter
>would have to worry
> about violence
>at a show and whatnot.
You mean their fans are peaceful...not too many violent acts at concerts are instigated by the group on stage...hah...
> I
>think
> it is more the
>Roots management's fault that
> they
>book an 21 show...
The management? No, it's the promoter's decision...
All age venues are a different dynamic from alcoholic venues...some venues serve alcohol at some shows and have all ages on others, some venues are exclusively one or the other...what you have to realize though is venues can make a heap of money by selling liquor, money which doesn't get made at an all ages show...so, whenever a venue is missing a chance to make money, they want to make that up somehow...when that happens, you get into arrangements where a venue owner's grubby hands start slicing out of the pie of money made at the door a little more than anyone likes...this discourages a lot of promoters because, hey, you do a lot of work to get people out to the show and look who takes a healthy chunk out of it?
I could talk about this all day, but I'm bored now...point is, the Roots are coming to Seattle for an all ages show at $5...so why is this thread so large?
Peace,
Spirit
http://amphibians.iuma.com<;/a>
http://infiniteloop.iuma.com<;/a>
DC hip-hop is on the rise...
"High grade when I create beats/if I don't get signed/I'ma be the most dope bum that ever walked the streets" -
Aychell (HL, of Khemystery)
"If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and looks like a duck, it's probably a tool of the conspiracy" - unknown

?uest,
You know I respect you as an artist and all that but, I don't think that it's fair that you should have to do a show that will make you miss your holiday and mean that you can't be with an ailing family member; that is unfortunate. However, I must also say that I don't think it's fair that my grandfather had to work on his Thanksgivings and miss all of them for 8 straight years. But it's a job, and love it or hate it, you still have to do it. Everyone faces these problems but life goes on, you are no different from, to quote your Philly brethren, the "average joe". Take care, hope your family member gets well...Peace!

I think you're taking it too hard...maybe not, I don't know. I was simply trying to state that with the good comes the bad you know? I know you don't HAVE to do a show here...that wasn't my point at all. But if you feel like you need to cancel the show to make a point...hey that's up to you. I still stick by my comments though. I think if you're are even considering cancelling the show here in seattle because of all this you will only be proving those of us who have been critical correct though. I'm sure you'd feel differently on this point. Much love...Peace!
P.S. - It ain't a money thing either (at least on my end)...did you read my reply post about how I don't care what it costs (within reason of course). Peace again.

...that certain cheap-ass motherfuckers want something for (next to) nothing the whole time, like they're the only people with no goddam money? They overlook, or can't grasp, the fact that The Roots are in the music BUSINESS, and as a result, their livelihoods and the livelihoods of those who work for them are often dependent upon a whole bunch of unquantifiables.
It's all well and good saying "they signed on the dotted line", but if they hadn't, you'd be lucky to see them playing Seattle at all. Ever try getting tour support off an independent? Ever try getting shit from a rocking horse? Ever travelled cross country in the back of a stank-ass van doing something you love, yet wondering whether it was worth having to live on nothing but Taco Hell burritos for a month to do it? Like Marvin Gaye said, the artist pays the price so you don't have to pay. Maybe not literally in this case, but bear in mind that if they do go to Seattle and do that $5 show, they won't make any money from it. The Roots have bust their asses to get this far, and people still want it on a plate. Damn, I think I'd give up...
paz,
Pablo
"Why don't you check out your mind, it's been with you all the time" - The Impressions
"Gimme a dope beat and I'm all in it" - Gang Starr "Mass Appeal"
"If something is yours by right, fight for it. That's not even the issue. I'm sure everyone in Seattle would be willing to pay $20 like Crossfaded said. But Quest knows he messed up with the whole Bumbershoot and is rightfully correcting this wrong. The last time I checked the Hieroglyphics were doing quite well on their independent label. There are many others too. Quest thanks for making it all-ages.
"We all be kinda fly, just can't be afraid to spread your wings."
-Dre of Outkast "ATLiens"

If the Roots don't perform where you live regularly, go see them somewhere else.
If you have more important stuff to do or you don't have a car to go there, too bad, but don't blame the Roots for not having a car, or for YOU making the decision not to go cos you have other priorities.
It's been said a zillion times already (and I'm afraid we'll have more posts like this in the future), but try to understand the way the music industry works, and if you desperately want to blame someone, blame the right people (promoters).
i live in Ghent, Belgium, have seen The Roots 3 times in Brussels already. The last TFA-tour they didn't perform in Belgium. I could have said 'What ? They don't perform in Europe's capital ? How can they front on us'
But instead I went to see them in Amsterdam. It would have been very convenient for ME if they had performed in Brussels, but so what ? It means no promoter wanted to book them for a Belgian date.
I don't whine, I mean : this is life. You're gonna get what you want sometimes, but you're gonna be disappointed every now and then too. If you don't start accepting that, you'll end up frustrated and bitter. I don't want that to happen to noone, so PLEASE chill from time to time.
And if ?uest wasn't replying your emails, BE PATIENT. You don't know how many emails he gets a day, plus they're on the road constantly. I have a lot less work to do than The Roots, still I'm not on the boards as much as The Roots.
And don't say 'it's their job, so they have to be there', cos it's not. How many other artists do the same thing Ahmir Thompson do ?
On one hand you say we think The Roots are god (which I think most of us don't, they're just nice people), but at the same time you try to make 'm almighty, by expecting them to control the places to tour, the ticket price, whether or not there's alcohol being served.
I understand that some of us might feel that it would be better if The Roots followed this or that particular route, but that's your opinion. You're welcome to give it (in a polite, respectful manner), but don't expect The Roots to thank you for your advice and do as you tell.
They make their own decisions, it's their lives, art, families and careers involved. They're the best judges of their interest.
krewc
http://urgent.rug.ac.be/vinylators<;/a>
'pardon my expression, but I'm a tear shit up'-Kane
60. "Roots in Seattle"
In response to Reply # 0

In defense of the Roots I'd like to make this statment:
As a concert promoter I tried to bring as many hip hop acts (Tha Alkaholiks, Hieroglyphics, RAHZEL((where you there)), The GZA/Genius, etc...) as possible to RKCNDY, an all-ages venue. I just wanted you to know the fact the Roots NEVER played an all ages show in the Seattle area because of their booking agent having a long standing working relationship with a certain promoter who does all of their shows at The Showbox and Aro.Space (both 21 and over venues) who really doesn't care whether the 18 to 20 year old fans ever get to see their favorite artist because it would be too much trouble for them (working around the infamous Seattle teen dance ordinace)and partly because their out of touch with the HIP HOP audience anyway.
SO THIS REALLY ISN'T AN ARTIST PROBLEM IT'S JUST AN UNFORTUNATE POLITICAL SITUATION FOR THE PACIFIC NW!
P.S. Sorry to those fans that I disappointed by moving to Atlanta, I know there isn't another promoter in Seattle willing to make the sacrifices that I made to make sure that the youth continue to get the opportunity to see live hip-hop. (Had to move for family reasons)
***NOTE to the Roots-I'm not saying there is anything wrong with said booking agent's exclusive working relationship with this promoter. (I also agree that she is one of the best in the business)
PEACE

I guess the real deal is that this cat was extremely disappointed in not being able to access the Roots on his terms...even tho many caustic arguments have ensued, it points to the real depth of admiration for the illadelph kings, but bottomline, a true fan remains a true fan, no matter what!!!!!I haven't seen the Roots since 96 at the Masquarade in ATL, but shit, I rep them 24/8.There are 2 many factors on the business side for The Roots to be in full control of every individual venue, so unless you are on the friggin road with them day in/day out, there's NO way for some of these idotic rantings on these boards to have any basis in reality...watchagonna do when some real thugs roll up on you and you ain't got your crew?(thats to all you cyberthugs who pop ish on the boards but would probably drop loads if ?uestlove and Kamal rolled up in your piece...nothing worse than cats who front)
The Roots gotta be feeling frustrated at times too, and it ain't about bozackriding either...its about real business with real musicians with real challenges to provide real hip hop music to real fans, and to even submit the accusation that the Roots don't really love every single fan and consciously make an effort to piss on their following, young and old, must be a pimpb*tchslap to their collective rosy cheeks!
If you get a chance to see the show, cool, rep them because they deserve it...
If they happen to cancel a show, rep them because more than likely circumstances beyond their immediate control came about...
If you get a chance to buy one of their gems, rep them, because ain't no other hip hop band rippin ish like they do...
And if you are still sleepin on them or can't feel what I'm saying, GET THE FUCK UP(outta this site)!

"I'm the psycho(time to catch a bodaaaay!!)The Four Horsemen
"I'm surgin up when I'm emergin..." I'm going to make a comment away from the topic and step away from this a level. I think a lot of people in here have a lot of nerve to lecture the brotha (or whoever)that posted, about the way he posted in here, when almost everyone in here came back at him with negtative energy and no sense. A case of the Pot calling the kettle black maybe? He's a fan, that's why he's pissed, he is as much one of you as anyone else. He may be irrate as ish but that doesn't mean that he doesn't have a right to the way he feels.
If most of ya'll have managed to remain calm about the fact that you don't have easy access to the Roots, that's on you and goody for you, but he's reacting different and he shouldn't be ganged up on for pointing out some very valid points. There are two sides to this story, everyone jumped on the Roots side without even dissecting the post enough to say that "maybe" the brotha had a point. No i didnt' like the way that he went about getting his frustrations out, i thought he was a little extra, but i do give him props for coming here and saying what he had to say straight out.
There are far too many "psuedo" industry people in this site, trying to give out information about a scene and scenario they aren't even completely sure of. Most of you aren't even in the business, that's pretty clear so spare the lecture. The brotha was talking about his business and like he and his partner said they were trying to bring a concert into happening so i think that they have some kind of clue. And no, i'm not in the business, i've only been exposed to it, but i know enough to know that a lot of you were talking "ish". The Roots ARE partly responsible, that doesn't mean that I think that they are assholes, i think it's an oversight. When you are busy you are busy, you deal with things one day at a time and try to balance all the things that are thrown at you. I don't expect them to have a moment when they're like "Hey, i know we got a show in an hour, but since we have a moment of peace, let's sit down and plan, how, when and where, we're going to rock Seattle!". At the same time it's big enough of a city to count when touring.
So this isn't to who posted or to any of the member of the Roots that's feeling pissed in response, they have a right to it because that ish was directed at them and they're just out there trying to do their best. This issue is theirs and really no one else's. So this is, instead, to all the people in this place that think that stardom makes you infalliable and being a layman makes you significanlty less. These were two sides to this, both with two valid arguements and most of you in here didn't even bother to give both parties a chance or listen above and beyond the anger. Instead you chose to contribute to the negativity. Look i'm no flower child, but still that's really sad ya'll. Then again who am I to say shit right? because i'm sure that will be the posts that get flung at me in response to all this.
Peace

Don't bother trying to ghet-to know me. If you know yourself and the role you play in, and the relationship you have with, the world, then we already know each other and introductions aren't necessary.

I didn't necessarily agree with the tone in which my homie Broke presented his argument, but like you said, he has some valid points.
The reason I chose to post his essay was because both of us had emailed Quest earlier in a professional manner to try and get an all-ages show with no response.
Obviously when the issue becomes open to the Okayplayer board Quest has to address the issue and speak his side of the story. Man, I came online, searching for "Seattle" in hopes someone would know what venue the show's gonna be at by now. I stumbled across this thread and I cannot believe the negativity and lack of appreciation.
?uestlove bends over backwards to come back to Seattle and this is what he gets??? Damn, this brother comes up on the web and answers questions from fans all over the world on a regular basis, this on top of a heavy touring and recording schedule. You think he has time to answer your email 8 nanoseconds after you write it?
You guys are UNIVERSITY STUDENTS? Now I HOPE you're not Music Business majors... cause you got a few things to learn. Enough of that.
?uestlove, thank you for showing love to Seattle. Even if you missed Bumbershoot, you cared enough to send Scratch, Scott Storch, Dice Raw, Kenny X etc. Thank you for taking time out of your day to make an EFFORT to come to Seattle, most of us appreciate it and look forwarding to seeing you on the 23rd. Peace.

First off, let me tell you that the show is at DV8 and the tickets are $8 (I already got mine).
Now, I am one of the original "critics/seattle kids/whatever else we've been called", and I don't think anyone expected quest to reply "8 nanoseconds later"...in fact, a reply was never requested as far as I can remember. The title of the original post was "Roots, You Better READ (emphasis added) this", not "you better answer this".
The fact that we are university students means nothing. And never have anyone of us claimed we "know how the business works".
One last thing...the name of the show is called "The Redemption Show". That's about as close as you can get to admitting that Seattle was "shitted on" without actually admitting, right or wrong? Cuz if not there'd be nothing to redeem? right? Peace.
Respectfully,
Crossfaded

"I drop bombs like one-armed wide receivers" -- Ras Kass
