If Resurrection where better then illmatic, people woulda been crying foul at "Retrospect". But when someone makes an album like illmatic first time out... well.. Its never happened before. It hasnt happened since. Resurrections good, but Illmatic is for the children!

oneLOVE.
OkayBoricua known as... Understand, Com Sense is my favorite MC, but this is my favorie album. I was like 13 or 14 when this dropped and prior to this album I payed little attention to what was said in a song. Lyrically, and for a debut, this is off the chain! It changed how I listen to hip-hop, "The Chronic" is the only other album that can really say that because before I got it I didn't listen to hip-hop. "Ressurection" and "One Day..." opened me up to a different style of hip-hop, though, I'll give it that, and it is a classic, but it isn't better than "Illmatic".
peace
"I never sleep, cause sleep is the cousin of death"-Nasty Nas
"I got a rhyme and you got a rhyme/but my rhyme is better than yours"-Com Sense

common is one of my favorite artist, but illmatic was flawless. not saying that ressurection isn't up to par, but when you put producers like that all together with a dope ass mc, there's not to many albums that even come close.

"fuck this rap shit I listen to classical"---Baatin of Slum Village
"cause who i'm talking bout y'all is HIP-HOP"---Common Sense
"i'm morpheus in this hip hop matrix, exposing fake shit"---Common Sense

I like Resurrection better, but I think that Illmatic was a better album. Has anyone ever noticed the similarities between The Infamous and Illmatic? To me they are very similar. I like The Infamous better, although I think my view is biased against Nas due to what he has become lately.
"you have to give these dumb motherfuckers what they want to hear" Ras Kass

C'mon now, it's hard not to judge something he has done without thinking of the trash he puts out today and being angry at him. It is one of the best, and what I was trying to say but did not say clearly enough was that I think it's better than Resurrection, but my favorite of the two is Resurrection. I also think Illmatic was better than Infamous but I prefer to listen to Infamous.
"You gotta tell these dumb motherfuckers what they want to hear" Ras Kass

Resurrection was just the shit to me.. Both of them (Res and Illmatic) were classics, no doubt, but I got soo much more out of Resurection. I Used To Love H.E.R. (did we ever find out what that stood for?) was tight, but for a grip after I first got that album, I was hearing new meaning in Common's lyrics.. I just loved da hell out that album.
Hax.
"Why have a siggie twice the size of your post?" - me.

One Time For Your Mind is the "weakest" track on Illmatic. I've always felt like Watermelon is the best track on Reseruction. But I like One Time For Your Mind more than I like Watermelon. Or I Used To Love Her or Sum Shit I Wrote. And I can't even compare those songs to NY State Of Mind or Memory Lane. I don't know how the two can be compared. I can name dozens of albums better than Resurection. I can name only a couple better than Illmatic. They both came out in 94. What do I think was better than Illmatic in 94? Nothing. Better than Resuection? Illmatic, Ready To Die, Southernplayalisticadicalmuzik, Do You Want More, Stress: The Extinction Agenda, The Sun Rises In The East. Fuck it, The Beatnuts album. Not dissing Resurection, but I don't see the comparison. In lyrics, let alone production. (No diss to No ID either, but that's really far-fetched.)
"...one finger is in the air/ and one is in the chamber/ y'all ask me what the fuck i'm doing/ i'm releasing anger..." - Andre, OutKast, 1994

In my opinion Illmatic and Resurrection are the two best albums of all time. However Illmatic is an album where everything is perfect, and even though it's kinda short, every song on it is unbelievably amazing. Resurrection is amazing as well but nothing can eff with Nasty Nas and his lineup of producers. From start to finish, Illmatic is a perfect example of how an album should be done.

this is not a comparison about who's better NOW! it's about which album was better. don't hold what nas is like (pardon the pun) now. take him for what he was back in 94'. i'm not trying to defend nas either because he broke his true fans hearts with his new material.

"fuck this rap shit I listen to classical"---Baatin of Slum Village
"cause who i'm talking bout y'all is HIP-HOP"---Common Sense
"i'm morpheus in this hip hop matrix, exposing fake shit"---Common Sense

This is a toss up for a few reasons
1) When illmatic dropped, that was it, here he was, rakims successor, the hip-hop nation knew it. It took cuts like U.N.I. verse at war, the bizness, the bitch in yoo for people outside of chicago to recognize com. I copped resurrection in summer 98 and its been a favorite of mine ever since, I rarely even spin illmatic anymore and if I do it will just be a choice cut or two.
2) Both gifted lyricists, lets look at how they blew. Nas caters to the hardcore thugs, big willy wanna bes, and those looking for good lyrics, nas escobar was still nice just his beats became wack. blame steve stoute/trackmasters. Com became big with the ladies (evidenced by the summer 99 wetlands jam session) after "the abortion" jawn. Me myself it took hearing real nigga quotes on future flavas to go out n cop "one day", and that was what woke me up.
Anyway my point is being that cats were up on illmatic from jump of course its fair to say that its better, beats WAY better, but com came with it lyrically, my grandkids are gonna be coming to me catching slick things off this album that I didnt get (not really since I have almost every song printed out), but I can tell more thought was put into resurrection than just "aight im gonna scribble down the best thug shit, get some bangin beats and the pj's will love it" both albums are excellent but I think com gets my vote for witticism, introspection, and lyrical presence that the world slept on until about 97"

"Intellectual property I got the title and the deed, I pay rent with the tears and sweat and what I bleed"- Talib Kweli
"You got hamburger beef I'll french fry ya cause drag done ate your food"- Drag-On
