"Re: D'Angelo's Stupid Mistake(will it happen again)?"

I've listened to "Voodoo", and I must say that it is by the far the greatest SOUL album in years. But I have to voice my opinion. D'Angelo did a stupid mistake, by having Method Man and Redman guest rap on "Left and Right". I mean come on, the whole mood is so positive, and lyrics are amazing "Left a dirty stain on my heart, I can't refute", from "The Root", and when Mr. Charlie Hunter does that backwards bits with the guitar, I get chills down my spine.
"Left and Right"'s raps totally hurt "Voodoo" musically and spiritually. Does anyone think he'll make this stupid mistake twice, and have filthy raps on a muscially superior album? Meth and Red hurt "Voodoo's" sales if anything. It's like I'm vibing with my lady, and these jokers come on and screw the mood that I'm having. I'm begging that D'Angelo doesn't have any Horrible mouthed Rappers on the album. In fact, I heard that that was why Lauryn wasn't on "Feel Like Makin' Love". Please if anyone knows D, or sees him, tell him I don't care what he does with the sound, because he's the musicain, but shit, I'm the receptor and I don't want disrespectful lyrics towards women on a D'Angelo album. I would appreciate all thoughts on this matter, as I feel it would have sold double what it sold(321,000 copies) in it's first week, if D'Angelo just did the song solo, cos all generations feel his muisc, but just those raps, HURT "Voodoo's" sales immensely in the Long Run. Don't Do this Shit again D, PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

>>D'Angelo did a stupid mistake, by having Method Man and Redman guest rap on "Left and Right".>>
We've had this discussion. Mayeb it is archive. Definitely check ?uest's review of "Voodoo" and see Left & Right.
>>Does anyone think he'll make this stupid mistake twice, and have filthy raps on a muscially superior album?>>
Interesting question. But I think calling it a 'stupid mistake' is too harsh. It was an honest mistake. D was trying to do a track that the fellas would respect and he made a questionable judgement call. I would call it a bad call since I skip L&R everytime I play "Voodoo". But you have to expect that he will make mistakes and that he will grow from them. Respect that he may not grow in the way that we would have him grow, however.

>>Meth and Red hurt "Voodoo's" sales if anything.>>
Not sure I really agree with that although they probably didn't bolster the sales too much.

>>It's like I'm vibing with my lady, and these jokers come on and screw the mood that I'm having.>>
True, true.
>>In fact, I heard that that was why Lauryn wasn't on "Feel Like Makin' Love".>>
Fiction. Is THIS discussion archived?
>>I feel it would have sold double what it sold(321,000 copies) in it's first week, if D'Angelo just did the song solo>>
Okay, this is just an overestimation, exaggeration, and a very convenient one since it did not go down that way.
>>cos all generations feel his muisc>>
With Redman and Meth or not, this is not rated-G ish. No, it is not vulgar. But it is sexual, has cursing, and neither my grandmother nor little cousins will be listening to most of it. It is an adult album. And need we mention "Shit, Damn, Muthafucka" off of Brownsugar? D is no saint. Not that he needs to be.
>>but just those raps, HURT "Voodoo's" sales immensely in the Long Run. Don't Do this Shit again D, PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!>>
I don't think people are in the streets going, "Yeah, I hold that joint is tight, but one track ain't kosher." Some people may doubt his integrity with the song but even for them I think it will be a forgivable 'sin'. His artistry shines through no matter what.
And given the state of popular rap today, I would not say that there is a huge segment of the public that is repulsed by women being portrayed in derogatory ways. If anything hurt his sales right now it is this: Voodoo is not a BrownSugar remake. It shouldn't be! But many people just cannot grow with an artist and D'Angelo requires that. Ultimately, though, he is a far richer creator for it. And I think this album will still have longevity.

Okaylurker no longer.
Sig coming soon...

if there's anything that okayartists have made perfectly clear since this sort of beautiful interaction began, it's that they haven't made the records they've made to please anyone but themselves. i'm not criticizing you but i think it's safe to say that d didn't make this record to please you. meth and red weren't a mistake on that track by any means. you may not want them on there. but he did. and damn, let the mufuka do what he wants to do! no offense, but if you don't like it, make your own damn record.
http://www.thehungersite.com<;/a>
"I ain't no goddamn son of a bitch--you'd better think about it, baby!"
--Glenn Danzig (Misfits)
"Where the F*CK is my purse icon??????"

hurt record sales? we went platinum in 2 weeks. this album has already surpassed brown sugar in shipment sales (2 million).
as for mistake. there are some cats out there that really feel meth and red. do i on this song? no. but i wouldn't go as far as to say "it was a horrible mistake". sheeeit if that makes you uncomfortable, then i'm glad we left "bitch" and "pussy" and "suck my soul (funky emotions)" off the record (actual songs).

THE SOULQUARIANS
chewy (quest).....jan
luke (d)........feb
lando (jaydee)......feb
cp30 (james poyser).....jan
r2d2 (jazzy jeff)......jan
hans (chaos)........jan
anakin (lil mike)......feb
honorary members:
kelo- soulacorn.......jan
common- soulcies......march
erykah- soulcies......feb
I would have to agree that there are heads that definitely feel Meth and Red!! As a musician D's job is to express himself. We get the product of that expression, and he felt like Red and Meth could add to the song and they are both ill. I wouldn't call it a mistake...it's a choice he made. Not everyone is going to feel that or agree and that's okay, nahmean!! But think about those heads out there that bought the album which is doing very well because of the vibe they got from a track like that. I also want to add that it's dope to see D doing stuff like collaborating with Meth and Red and not limiting his range cause he's ill!!

It gives it that "dirty" feel. Since D is a child of hip hop as well as soul, it seems like he's just showing his dirty-versity.
SA-DA-TAY!
I AM BLACK MUSIC
"Ima put a curse on you. actually, i don't think it hurt sales. Although, i did question buying the CD after I heard that song because I thought the rest of the tracks would be the same.
BUT, as for sales, I think D made up for those few people who didnt like the meth and red, with his nekkid video..
that's just my opinion.

it seems like all the soft, r&b fans are the only ones who have a problem with this. who says it was a stupid mistake? or a mistake at all? i hope he makes these "mistakes" more often cause the shit is funky and dirty.
i agree with TinkyWinky. voodoo wasn't made for anyone but those who were on it. if you don't like it, press fast forward and SHUT THE FUCK UP. THE SONG IS ALREADY ON THE ALBUM!!! QUIT BITCHING. d'angelo talks about how the process of making the record was about evolution, or LEARNING. and i think he learned that many of the people who listen to his music are one dimensional and close-minded. and if he made voodoo only made to satisfy fans, it would have been brown sugar pt. II.
...and if you thought the song was vulgar, listen to prince (and i say again, "i sincerely want to fuck the taste out of your mouth" -- let's pretend we're married).

Reading the CD jacket, I was shocked to see Medthod Man and Redman's names. Once I heard the song I liked it and felt the "men" bring some of that "street - fucking reality" into the CD, you know, fucking just to be fucking kind of thing that we've all done once upon a time.
I disagree, I love Left and Right! As for it messing up your time with your lady, I dont see how it does, I can put Left and Right on, get into a serious nasty groove with my man and then flow into the more mellow tracks for some deep, passionate lovemaking. I think it just shows that he can be versatile, and that he has a lil something for everyone. I dont think it was a mistake.

I like L&R, but not at all feeling Meth/Redman's raps. I'm not offended or prudish, they just don't fit in well with the song. Short anecdote: I brought my copy of Voodoo in for store play (mom and pop record store in Arizona) and while I was playing it, Voodoo was selling and selling. Then my boss happened to be around and heard the "set yr pussy on fire" and LSS, now I can't play my copy of Voodoo and we've sold like 3 Voodoos in a week. I ordered an edited version of Voodoo for store play and it's on backorder and meantime assholes are buying fucking Sisqo. I think that meth & red were out of place when u look at the album as a whole. But I've been so exposed to them rippin' those rhymes and especially on that song (I think that song was released b4 Untitled). So I got used to it. But I'm got tight after I found out that Q-tip was originally on "Left & Right." He definately would have been a better guest rapper and less abrasive.
Also, he could have just plain left the rapping out and used meth and red for a remix.
I saw a post that quest put in response to this saying there were other songs? "Pussy", "Bitch", and "Suck my Soul..." what? What in the hell is wrong with you cats,.............I know those songs were/are bomb they need to be released some time in the future (like quicksand milennium, Hint, Hiiiiiinnnntttt!!!!).

"I'm feelin' like my soul is empty" D'Angelo
"It's all about the artistry, baby."

>But its obvious that artists nowadays dont
>mind compromising the quality of an
>album for higher sales...
If you read ?uestlove's interview on D's page and/or any other interviews you hear about the making of that album, you would know that the foul-mouthed ish you hear in that song was put there for reasons other than simply to boost record sales. He put it there because it made sense to him! I mean, the damn thing took 100 years to come up with, and it seems that each song was painstakingly gone over to find the perfect blend of sounds and rhythms . . . so for whatever reason, D thought that Left & Right needed that ish right where it was. If he didn't want it there, it wouldn't be there/
Personally, I don't much like the rapping on that joint either, but I respect D's creative integrity for putting it out there.
