""Am I the Only One?""

Aiight, I've been logging onto okayplayer for about five months now, and I've been reading a lot of the stuff on here and my question is am I the only one? What I mean by that is Ahmir let's A LOT of ill shit come out of his mouth. I understand like most people should, is everyone has their own opinion and that's all this post is my opinion. Ahmir said in the D'Angelo tour gossip something about it was 40 cats to everyone shorty in some club and he knew it would be all these cats talking about "oh shit the roots I love ya'll shit" and he didn't feel like it. I can feel you on that, sometimes you just don't want people in your face but guess what? You're in the limelight, and that's what comes with the territory. If you're a student you're gonna have to do some studying, of course sometimes you're not going to feel like it, but you don't complain about it TO the teacher! It's like he's complaining about the fans, to the fans! Damn! Now, wait a minute I thought that's what artist want from fans but maybe I'm wrong. I'm from philly so I've seen the Roots grow from South street to the Grammy stage but damn, it just seems like Ahmir's head just keeps getting bigger with every new accomplishment. Platinum with Thing Falls Apart, Ahmir's head...a little bigger. A Grammy for Erykah Badu's album...a little bit bigger. And now with their own grammy...it's off the rocker. Now maybe it's just me, and that's why I'm asking, am I the only one? I thought Quest would want to hear how much people love the roots. Like I said I'm from the crib and now reside in Baltimore working at WEAA and produce Morgan State's hip hop show so I see the industry from every standpoint. Being a fan of hip hop, being behind the scenes, working for different labels, and being a producer but when I'm home for the most part, niggaz CAN'T STAND THE ROOTS!!! They want to hear Beanie or Eve. And I've read the the Roots really don't like performing in Philly because they don't get a lot of love. Now I'll be the first to admit that SOME Philly people have NO respect for hip hop as an art, but I just feel like you should show love to your fans that's all. Now about the Com album, I've got the advance, not the unmastered bootleg of "Like Water For Chocolate" and it's aiight. Not Com's best 74 minutes committed to tape by no means. I'd rather here "One Day", then "Resurrection" then "Like Water..." and then "Can I...", but then again that's just my humble opinion. I just feel the Soulquarians and Primo didn't come with it. No ID and Ynot(again in my opinion) is definitely missed on this project It's funny, it's like artist decide to put up their opinions and us the fans (or the peons) are just supposed to accept it, but let one of us post something and instead of politicing with us or building with us we get posts like "I'm sick of defending my shit it's 3am just buy the album!"! I mean, what's really the difference between the artist and the fans? In most aspects of this biz, the fans have more money than the rappers do, but they 're the ones with the big heads?!?! The fans MAKE these artist. If it wasn't for us, no one would buy the cd's. You wouldn't even ship platinum because the fans wouldn't be requesting it at the record stores. Seems assed backwards to me. That's what bugs me out. I would think the okay family would be more down to earth but I guess I was wrong. And the Tip review, is it ok if an album is made without Ahmir's involvement? Just asking but am I the only one? And if anyone would like to respond I would LOVE to hear back but let's build together, aiight? One.

...but I think it applies.
All I know is that when a good friend of mine and I were at the BAM afterparty, she went over (like loads of people) to tell ?uest how much she really really digs the Roots (and for how long) and how pleased she is that through the years they've kept it really really, well, REAL. Anyway, when she came back over from speaking with him she said, "I have no idea if I just annoyed the heck out of him with so many people going over to speak to him, but I really just wanted to let him know." (He did say thanks, btw.)
A few weeks later (around the end of the year) she and her guy were at Black Lily. ?uest was there and he came over and kissed her (ON THE CHEEK) and shook her guys hand and wished them both a happy new year. I'm certain he wouldn't have done that if he didn't remember and wasn't at least a little touched by what she said.
Doesn't sound like someone who's completely out of touch with the people who enjoy his music.
I read the tour update and what I got from the posted message you referred to was that the man was regretting being out AT ALL and not IN with his girlfriend. I don't know. That's what I got from it.
Maybe his head just APPEARS bigger cause he's letting his fro grow
Anna
Hair (hair, hair, hair)
Flow it, show it
Long as God can grow it my hair
~ Hair
When you turn off the spotlight and strip away the $$$ and recognition all anybody can be is human. Humans have good days and bad days, likes and dislikes, and even flaws. What pisses me off is that people keep criticizing artists for not being down to earth or fitting some superstar standard like smiling in everybody's face when someone says they are a fan. Just enjoy the music! People get so caught up in the external, material facades rather than just relaxing and being happy that there are musicians like The Roots out there making good music. The whole "he spoke to me", "kissed my friend" bs is so triflin' and fake!

Because negativity attracts more attention. Kil is obviously seeking attention. Attention that y'all are giving him.
This is prolly the first time I've ever contributed to a thread of this nature. There's a reason you never see my name attatched to wackness like this. I usually read a line or two, shake my head, and move on to something that's actually worth my time. So I guess congratulations are in order, Kil. You managed to post something wack enough to actually make me break my rule of not feeding into the games attention-seekers like yourself play, by EXPLOITING the artist/fan interactive atmosphere that we are busting our asses everyday to maintain and develop.
You insult our intelligence by slamming okayplayers...saying that you are "the only one"...implying (to me anyway) that this is a place for dickriding fans...but then you stay on here (you say you've been here for five months) and you make long-winded posts about how blind we all are and that we all worship the okayartists. Why do you stay here if you think that's what this site is about?
You ain't original, son. I see people like you talking this very same mess nearly every week!! If you were really on here for as long as you say, you should be able to find a more original way to get a rep.

PEACE
Doug (The New Guy)
"While you exist in a perpetual state of mediocrity, I be droppin these on ya dome"
"How I made it? Yall fuckin serious? Kil proposes an valid point and all I see is about six comments that's just dismissing everything he touched on, and what Ahmir himself said he loves, specifics! So let's get specific people. When I read a comment in Busta Rhymes CD saying "for those of you that I may have offended.... blah blah blah..I'm sorry, and then he says but if you don't like it FUCK YOU we already blazin!" This is not the attitude that these artists should be having! They the first ones to say this and that about what the FANS do and if you think, THAT'S what we here for, to keep shit in check! I would love to have a site like this for my fans to tell me ayo BOX your sound MAY be slipping a bit, clean it up or change this! But NOOOOOO all I see is really a couple of hot heads saying, well buy my shit but don't speak to me unless you got a cunt and some breast and Oh yeah A FAT ASS! Stop sniffing the clouds for a minute okayartists! We as your rent payers feel we have been rubbed the wrong way for nothing! Why wouldn't you want me as a fan and a person that respects your work to approach you in public and say it! WHY THE FUCK NOT!?? But when I buy a BOOTLEGGED version of your shit THAT'S when you want to remind me of MY duties as a FAN??? HA! You kidding!?? If you don't want, as you say NIGGAS on your dick saying I love the ROOTS, then why in the fuck would I want to SUPPORT a businessman who doesn't WANT to see me coming! The chinese learned from that very attitude the hardway! You goddam right I EXPECT to be able to approach the person I help go platinum! No Kil you not the only one because personally I'm sick and tired of getting shitted on by YOU, THE ARTIST! You could have stayed local and I would never have heard of the Squared Roots, or the ROOTS! Or songs like POPCORN, or I Remain Calm! You could have kept this shit in the fucking basement for YOUR fucking enjoyment! MY music aint gonna stay there! And when it does what it does I'm not going to shit on my public! I put in their hands to support and I will thank them and know that my thanking days will NEVER be over! I'm in it for the long haul! How can I call myself a true Hip-Hopper and but a bootleg? How can YOU call yourself an true ARTIST and not like the ones who LOVE you! This comment AIN'T just for the ROOTS either! Platinum has the letters A, and N of the word FAN if their WERE a F EVER in it yall must have used it to say F us! WAKE THE FUCK UP! YALL AIN'T REALLY like that UNLESS it's really LIKE THAT!

And if I approach your ass again I aint on your dick, I just want an autograph and some conversation! Selfish ass motherfuckers!

Lunch

I thought that some people would have got my point with the chinese reference! But I get back the comments of a few people that must have went over that OR maybe my comment was over THEY head! So here I go again! First off I may have saw ?uest in concert at the 9:30 club but I NEVER met him face to face(thus the refferel to Busta). I just related to Kil(a he not a she by the way) because I politic with dudes and females alot about this very topic! Once it becomes public you got to DEAL with the public! Not like but DEAL! I feel that when I go from being the cat from D.C. to multiplatinum or just plain ol HEARD on the radio, it'll NEVER be the same! I got to manage to stay here or when I go to work a job "aint you that dude who used to be.." will be dropping out of plenty mouths! Follow me so far? While I make my mark on the industry I need to keep the interest of the fans that the Lord blessed me with! I will HAVE to sign autographs, kiss babies, smile in photos you know the tiring shit! Because when they decide to boycott, oh shit! But as long as they happy, I have room to grow on my label, and maybe a chance to get my own because my clientel speak when my shit hits the stores! Now for ?uest! NO I don't feel you owe me a Goddam thing! If you buying a meal and I don't got the ends in the restaurant for my bill I'm not gonna look over and notice you and say "Hey" I brought his album with my laundry money "HE OWES ME"! Bullshit! BUT I do feel there's a certain level of professionalism that must be maintained within the artist/fan relationship! If I want to get on-there are ways that I SHOULD and SHOULD NOT approach you or anyone! If I want to politic-SAME THING! So let me ask this ?uest. Do you think this comment you reading right now will be spoken to you with a bottle of Champagne in the hand of the person speaking with spit flying every two seconds!?? No! I don't do that, I know how to approach people! Professional! I'll give two examples! I approached Com when Ressurection came out and he told me call him Rashid and we proceeded to talk about the album and people he might want to work with in the future etc. I even gave him me rendition of what I thought H.E.R stood for(How. Everybody. Rapped) he laughed and said "that's what it means now" with a beer in HIS hand. That was the realest experience I had with someone I thought I would NEVER get to speak with! Then there was Flipmodes frontman at the EPMD concert! EPMD were the coolest things in there speaking with everyone! Then I turn around to Busta who before I got the word Hay out my grill PUSHED pass me, I almost fell if my fall wasn't broken by a kind bouncer who didn't think I was disrespecting him! Fans we aint the scum of the earth but we are EVERYWHERE! We the ones who don't got the deal, the ones who DO have the deals, and the ones scheeming on your shit! But we are HUMAN too! Do we ALL have to be treated in a harsh manner just because a person gave you a BAD experience? And to the dude who asked why am I here?......This is a good website, the best I've seen so far! I battle here, chat here, and DEBATE! I am OKAY!

Lunch

As far as the tour diary you are quoting, it seems like you are reading a bit too much into it. To me, it seemed like he was dreading the "I love the Roots" male groupie-wannabe types. whatever.
I feel like artists like the Roots are doing what they do because of their love of music and an attempt to further hone their craft. I don't feel as if we, the fans, "make" the artist. what we do, is, show our support by buying the music, seeing the shows, etc. i don't feel that this entitles us to have them on a leash, asking them to obey our every command. i do feel that no matter how talented an artist may be, they should in every way attempt to remain humble and appreciative, but come on, they're human like everyone else.

deejaydub

Hey thanks Quest for setting the record straight... as an aspiring artist I realize that fans do try and manipulate you in saying that they made you when in all actuallity you made yourself... the fans just support you... Obviously your going to have to do somethings for the fans... D'Angelo's Untitled Video for example female fans loved it... I'm not saying that was D's intention, cuz I'm sure it wasn't, but it did work out that way... So to all you fans out there... don't tell artist you made them.... thats disrespectful... to their talent... to their music... and to them... so until you walk 1/2 a mile in their shoe's don't step on them...
Keep it Real and Flow From the Soul Y'all...
untitled...

Micah I can see how you might have misconstrued what quest said. I dont think he meant that (not owing us anything) in a pejorative (sp) way. I happen to agree with him somewhat. He does what he likes and we collectively appreciate it. If we don't agree we can go elsewhere. True he was a little abrasive but we must not always be so critical.

I'm kinda in a special position where I can relate to BOTH sides. I co-host the #1 6-10 pm radio show in Chicago (Bad Boy Radio on WGCI). Wgci is the radio station that gave you Tom Joyner and Doug Banks whose syndicated morning shows are heard all across this great country. This radio station does'nt breed your average 'oh-yeah-I-heard-of-you' dj, it breeds 'STARS'(I will use stars in quotes because thats what our boss tell us we will become). The support and love we recieve from the listeners is like no love you have ever seen for a radio personality. We are like actual local celebs and just like the Roots, we have our own intercative website www.thebadboyz.com(shameless plug)
How does this relate, you ask? I'm kinda like ?uest, the interactive one. Out and about, responding to questions on the site, trying to take the good with the bad. We all got into this for some sort of LOVE but the fans can be a bit much at times. Whether they're drunk, callin your name like they know you, or shittin' on your work,(or in my case show)you can only take so much. FUCK WHAT ANYONE SAYS ABOUT 'YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO YOUR OPINION' NO ONE LIKES IT WHEN YOU DISLIKE THEIR SHIT! Artists put their heart and soul into this and the fans shoot it down...excuse me 'review' it in seconds. They (hip hop fans and our radio listeners) also feel like your success is based on THEM ALONE. 'Y'all would'nt be shit if it was'nt for us, dont forget that' they'll tell you in a heartbeat!
From the fan side I can relate too. ?uest would seem approachable because of his interaction with this site. I remember when I was a kid, since I wanted to be a dj, I wanted nothing more than to hang out with the cool radio jocks when they did a party at the local skate rink. But they seemed too cool to approach (not unlike a lot of hip hop artists). Of course you could go up to them if you were fine with a fat ass (also like a lot of artists). I don't think artists are in it for the ass... it just comes with the job. If more fans were like Guru (give 'em a pound, tell 'em my name, told 'em I liked their music and was out) artists would appreciate it more, but people want to freestyle or sing for you (Boyz II Men syndrome) or just hang out which aint cool after awile cuz the artists MIGHT be trying to get laid (after all we are men and well, if they're gonna give it to us were gonna take it... right?)
Anyway, i'm rambling and I don't want y'all to get too mad at the okayartists for speaking they're minds (Aquarius' and Pisces can be brutally honest) Hell, y'all do the same and they're/we're supposed to just take it?
Disclamer:
This was not written to put myself or WGCI radio in the same light as the Roots. (hell, who the fuck am I anyway?)

http://www.thebadboyz.com<;/a>
http://www.wgci.com<;/a>

'Don't worry 'bout what the fuck I be doin'- Smokey

29. "What do you WANT?"
In response to Reply # 0

You seem to be a long winded, no point type of guy. So let me ask you this, what do you want?
You question Questlove's character.
You say niggaz hate the Roots.
You say that YOU made Questlove.
So what do you want?
You want Quest to shut up?
You want Quest to grovel at your feet begging for forgiveness?
You want Quest to "have a smaller head?"
What DO YOU WANT?
I'll tell you this, Quest has been more than even handed with response to these kind of personal attacks then almost anyone I have know. You are doing nothing but attacking him in your post.
So, make a point.
And if your musical opinions differ with Quest's, post them in the Lesson, and DO not directly attack him. You have your opinions, and so does Quest. Quest is not obligated by law to be gracious when you press him on an issue. Jay-Z would just stab you. Puffy would put two to your body. Quest just disagrees. Don't like his opinions, well then form your own and find some people who would visit your website.
By the way, your original post is filled generalizations, ancedotal evidence and just plain stupidity. In my opinion.
Also, please tell your mother to stop calling my pad after midnight.
-Tom
>What I mean by that is
>Ahmir let's A LOT of ill
>shit come out of his mouth.
Ive read iller shit on these boards by non-roots people.

I can
>feel you on that, sometimes you
>just don't want people in your
>face but guess what? You're in
>the limelight, and that's what comes
>with the territory.
If you can feel that, why try to present a different reality? thats kinda contradictory. This is the exact reason why last summer I saw him at the train station but let him go about his business, we had met before, he was cool so I just layed low, I think he may have been saying hey one time at the wetlands while he was talking to dream hampton but it was noisy and I didnt wanna interrupt their convo. Theres a thing called respect, and a time/place for everything. I'll tell you this though if I coulda made it off the bus I woulda ran up n showed mos def love when I saw him with chairman mao out the window.
It's like he's
>complaining about the fans, to the
>fans! Damn! Now, wait a minute
>I thought that's what artist want
>from fans but maybe I'm wrong.
Like I said time n place for everything. Hes shown us much love times when I was n wasnt present. I know of no other artist paying for cats to eat at a movie shoot, etc.

>it, but let one of us
>post something and instead of politicing
>with us or building with us
>we get posts like "I'm sick
>of defending my shit it's 3am
>just buy the album!"!
I'll give you this one halfway, ?uest takes offense to people criticizing his stuff, he usually has a vision though, and puts a lot into trying to get that vision across. Imagine you put a piece of work in a museum for display, something you were feeling when you created it n you got cats talking shit about it. You would be a little defensive. He takes the time out to defend himself, but you dont HAVE to buy the album its your money, your tastes, hes usually having to say "my shit is dope and this is why", whether you feel him or not is your opinion.
I would
>think the okay family would be
>more down to earth but I
>guess I was wrong.
I wouldnt even say I know the okayartists, Ive met everyone except d'angelo and hub, and I'd say they all are relatively down to earth, even thought, maybe you had a bad experience. Keep in mind though these are people just like me n you, they dont wanna be bothered all of the time.
And the
>Tip review, is it ok if
>an album is made without Ahmir's
>involvement?
I took that review to have a joking tone. From what I know ?uest n Tip are still cool regardless of him not being on the album. I took the review to say "This is why Im feelin the amplified album, even though I wasnt on it". Friendly stroking of his own ego, like "Im the shit, you shoulda had me on there, jay dee is the shit too though" (WHY DOES HE DICKRIDE JAY DEE SO MUCH PART 23, next weeks post of controversy) It was a creative way of expressing his thoughts on the album, being a highly controversial album since cats say tip sold out.

Just asking but am I
>the only one? And if anyone
>would like to respond I would
>LOVE to hear back but let's
>build together, aiight? One.
Possibly your intent was good and harmless, but sometimes I think cats do this kinda stuff just because they know ?uest will read it n respond.

35. "If ?uest doesn't give a eff about his fans, wtf is he doing HERE?"
In response to Reply # 0

You're entitled to your opinion of ?uest's art just like everybody else, but your statements about his head is getting too big and how he doesn't care about his fans are completely unfounded. If he didn't care about us, why is he spending some of his valuable free time talking to us on this board? How many artists spend that kinda time on their fans without receiving any compensation?
If he doesn't care about what we think, why does he even defend himself? If our opinions didn't matter, they wouldn't be worth debating. The fact that he made the effort to respond to your ridiculous accusations proves you wrong.
As for his supposed obligation to you and everyone else, your reward is the MUSIC. You pay $15 at coconuts for a CD not an autograph session. You pay for a concert ticket to get a live performance not to have a nice chat with the artists afterwards. That's the deal, everything else is a bonus. You pay for the art, not the artist. You didn't buy stock in the roots, you don't own a piece of them. They owe you nothing because you already got plenty in return for your money. Artists receive our support because we appreciate and enjoy their art, end of story.
