"Common is SOOOOO sexy!"

Y'all must be joking...
Why do I get so many e-mails with women wanting them some Common?
I thought the era of the light-skinned guy was over?
Is Common the new Al B Sure?
I asked him how he gets all the honeys when he says "bitch" so much? I agree with Qoolquest. It's like women just skip over his "bitches". (He says "Well, Ang, it's because I don't overdo the "bitches")
I was like, "yeah, right". You say one or two "bitches" in front of most of these women and they go off. It's like they distribute versions of his album with "bitches" ON MUTE to women.
I'd like to thank all the women who write in for Common, you helped me prepare for my part on his album, the part according to Qoolquest, that is going to make this album go triple platinum. (Tiny Teanie and I will be available for non-okayartist albums soon.)
I saw his new video yesterday. He looks good. Like, action hero good. Like, hell-fire homophobic, high yella good.
That's the only time I've said "Boy, you look good!"..."in the video"
Because he didn't look nothing like that sitting on the sofa watching the video. (He was doing 2 photos shoots, he got a GANG of interviews and such coming up...I was with him and MCA publicist, I'm a list em in the updates...)
When he used to squeak his voice on "Can I Borrow a Dollar", I used to think "Eff is wrong with this guy?". He almost looked okay in the "Retrospect" video, but his acting skills (or lack thereof) fucked it up for me.
The pro-questiness posts made me think of this. C'mon ladies...what is it?
Is Common really sexier than Black Thought?
WHY?
I want answers!!!
angieee ('stress)
Buy my book. You got a year to save up for it. "The Broke Diaries": Spring 2001 Random House / Villard Press.
(Yeah, yeah...Random House, I ain't joking...I'm coming LARGE!, WHAT?!!)
Hey! there ain't no darkk skin light skin "in" thing. If a dude is fine he fine, right? or Am i just too idealistic or what? I hear girls all the time saying, "he cute for a dark skinned guy" I was like what? and if it was up to me, Mos def is sexier than Com or Thought but I guess he ain't the topic of discussion at this point. yeah, Com is fine and he does have mad sex appeal. What makes him especially sexy is when he wears those glasses. intellect. those rosy, supple lips as well and the bald head adds to the enigma. ok Angiee what do ya think of that?!
"My motto--stay fluid even in staccato"-Mos Def
"How can I promise you forever when I can't even promise the rest of the day?"-Ceelo
"What you know about the bananas and mayonnaise?"-Khujo
Cresha the cre8or has now left the premises.

It's kinda sad. It's something people, myself included, overlook. And it's still misogynistic whether you're applying the term to a man or woman. Because when you get down to it, someone somewhere who started calling guys bitches KNEW they'd associated it with a negative view of those of us with XX chromosomes. And that connotation is still there.
"I am the FLY"- Car Wash
"a child is born/ with a heart of gold/ way of the world/ makes his heart turn cold" Earth, Wind, and Fire "That's the Way of the World" Thanks qtpi

I admit I think that Common is sexy also. But not only for his looks but also for the fact that he seems to be very intelligent as well. I admit that I only heard a few of his songs and I never heard bitch or hoe in either one. Now, though Angie is saying that he does. It makes me wonder why does he have to use bitch and hoe in his songs? Then I started to think about some of prince's songs, "Irresistable(sp?) Bitch" for one and for some reason I am not offended by that song. Maybe because he is only referring to one woman as a bitch and not all women in general. Is that what common is doing? Then again, does it really matter if he is? Am I a hypocrite? Anyway, I am curious Angiee, since you know him better than I do, are you upset by this?

We lie about our hair and we know we got a weave..

i definitely think black thought is sexier than common on the overall. his flow, his depth, his dizzying intellect....
based on looks alone, though, i'd say common....
and based on okaybios alone, i'd say malik b, actually.... he intrigues me.
and ?uest got EVERYBODY beat... on a whole OTHER eschelon...
bottomline/final thought: cain't nobody tell me that black thought cipherin' down the sidewalk on the "u got me" video didn't look better than com seein' apparitions of his aborted seed on the "retrospect" video....

"u need to buy a cd and stop rewindin' this..." thought on "next movement"

Anyway, I am
>curious Angiee, since you know him
>better than I do, are you
>upset by this?
Hey,
I felt like such a Dear Abby for a second.
Girl, aren't we all hypocrites in some way or another...and "bitch" is one of those *hot button* words, but (and I don't know why this is) not as much a hot button as "faggot" or "nigga / nigger"
I am not at all upset by Common using the word "bitch". It might upset me tomorrow, I mean a bitch is a *dog* right? Anyway, for some reason, it doesn't upset me. Maybe I haven't thought about the social implications of men calling us bitches that much. I'm usually too stuck on "nigga".
I've called women (and men) "bitches". Yikes. I mean, shit, I have.
Hmmm...I don't use "ho" too much. I hate that double standard...
But, no, Common's use of those words doesn't offend me. Because everything he spits is him. (Why do I feel weird, like I'm in a Common commercial. Yesterday night I was watching biography on a&e and they were showing the bio on Telly Savalas (Kojak). He was not a handsome man by any means and the women said it....BUT....they all agreed he exuded sex appeal because of his charisma and charm. They said he walked into a room and everyone stopped to look.
I'd imagine it's all the same about Com. Everyone hears him say bitch, but no one seems to care, Telly Savalas was a player, but no one seemed to care either. Charisma and Charm and the way you carry yourself can go a long long way.
Peace,
Phil
"Petty Thoughts for Petty Minds." - Phil Copyright 2000
"Okayplayer.com, first the Web, next, the World!" - Phil copyright 1999
"Phil, You're a Genius" - Kayci Copyright 1999
"I'm not a genius, I just say what other people should be thinking." - Phil Copyright 1999
"Girl, you so chicken, your Grandfather's name is Colonel Sanders" - Phil Copyright 1999
"You must have verbal diarrhea cuz all you do is talk shit." here's my two cents. and it is from a male perspective, so please bear with me.
men are naturally, and culturally adversarial. in any argument, you will see men cut each other off, and step on each other's toes to get across a point. there is a natural inclination amongst us to try to establish ourselves as "the upper" in our interpersonal relations with each other.
in doing so, words like faggot is not only seen as emasculating, but as the ultimate put down. in this new age of consciousness, and with our media being soaked with girl-girl imagery (which men don't complain about) and gaining in guy-guy acceptance, MEN lead the charge in being vocal. and the women who are vocal are more masculine, so they too make their voices heard.
so, women, being the incredibly intelligent back biting creatures that they are, decide to let a bitch or two slide. it's an amazing up hill battle to try to combat the word bitch, and they know who they can and can't change. the (black?)thought seems to be, "he's not talking about me, i ain't no bitch!" and under her breath she whispers to her *girlfriend* "but i do know some bitches though."
i mean, shit, com is pretty on point, and women *know* that he doesn't mean them, right? so why shouldn't he be sexy?
***
and as far as i'm concerned, nerdy computer literate verbose fashion plates with muffin like asses have never been in. but at least i could catch a break before all these darkies and their dreads ended up on my tv screen. ((if you take this line too seriously, just read my bio or something))
that doesn't mean that hak isn't sexy by any means, but it's gettin difficult on us 'tweeners who aren't lightbright w/the curls, or dark diesel and dreaded.
_______________________________________
http:://www.h8r.com<;/a>
((soon to cease existence in a paper world, the h8r will only be digital...doo doo doo doo doo))

21. "Bitch and hoe"
In response to Reply # 16

Through conversations with women, I have always been told that the reason a lot of females dont mind the word bitch and hoe in a song is because they feel that men are talking about women who are bitches and hoes and not all women in general. Thus, if you are not a bitch or hoe then why are you bothered by a word that does not pertain to you? I on the other hand feel that most of the time the word is used to describe all women in general. But then again maybe I am way off base on that. I dont know...I guess it just depends on the context. But hey, I still feel that Common is sexy (especially in those glasses...and those lips...damn...almost as nice as D'Angelos!!).

We lie about our hair and we know we got a weave.. yes i say the words.
yes i know they are wrong.
yes i'm trying to do something about it.
i'm not saying i'm gonna stop. but i want to mean it. if i say bitch, i want you to FEEL the anger in my tone, not like, "is there gonna be some bitches at that party?" but more like, "bitch please!" same thing with hoes, i mean, i know HOES. but most of them are just people with pricks.
i don't have a problem with a word, just in the connotation. i want my words to mean a little more now. jokes are jokes, it's all fine and good in it's proper context, but on this digital arena, and in places where i'm gonna meet new folks, i dont want anybody questioning my usage of the word bitch or hoe or nigger or fag or dickhead. i want to mean just what the fuck i say.
i'm working on it...that's all that i can say.
_______________________________________
"readin the boards, havin' a bud."
true? Although I do love some Com, I do cringe sometimes when he uses "bitch" up in his songs-even when he's talkin' about men. It doesn't really make it any better since bitch is a female dog, and even though a lot of folks may not want to admit it-when you callin' a man a bitch, it's supposed to mean he's weak, like a woman. But we know that we are anything but weak. I don't feel like making this into a three-page essay, so I'll stop here.
Oh-and I can't choose between Com and Black Thought. the way that he gives off this self-confident, slightly machismo-like vibe without coming off like a jackass. he's pretty good-looking, but personally i find black thought has the edge in the looks department (i also tend to find darker skin men more appealing).
i also think that he takes some liberties verbally under the auspices of this persona he created. for me, as far as the name-calling goes, i'm swayed more by the visual (or overall persona). i mean, juvenile doesn't have to speak nary a "ho", "bitch", or whatever, but the images i saw in the "back that ass up" video were much more disturbing than hearing some names.
just my .02
deejaydub

he doesn't get called on the bitch and hoe stuff because that's how a lot of people feel about most women. what ppl call misogony is accepted by most of us in day to day life and music. It doesn't bother me 'cause i say the same things and yes I am a woman. I say the same "homophobic" phrases. maybe it's the water out of lake michigan... I'm listening to common right now and i couldnt' tell you if i even heard him say bitch or hoe. i guess they do have a special mute mode for women. the only time i can remember hearing it is in my fave song "real nigga quotes" when he said "tell yo' bitch to calm down" i found it funny 'cause that's what i'd say. anyway... part of it is delivery. it's that fine line in tone that makes the difference. if he was calling females out the way he called immature it would make a big difference. it's just like violence, if you can make your target faceless, less than human then it's easier to do what you have to do. same with language, if you don't put a specific person with the deragatory statement then it's easy to say "he's not talking about me." like i said before it's also in the tone, if i don't feel a maliciousness in the persons words i'm not tripping. enough ramblings...

a wise man once said/an eye for an eye/leaves everybody blind/i’ve always listened/but today i’ve grown deaf/eye for an i/i/am preparing to go to war/but i can’t see to find my sword - incogx
But what kind of genetically engineered cyborg are you to remember what you were doing at age 1?!? - Ornery
skidmarks. they're not just for underwear anymore. - crash bandicoot
'i feel you like, tomaz zamot ya know' - donwill
yardicus: hey don't laugh! I can rock the hell out a miniskirt and some "hooker heels..."
yardicus: Not to mention, my superb flynes when rocking a string of pearls...
just think/just think/ what if you could just/just blink your tag - Black Thought HOB 99
bAttlin me is like some KEDS tryna mess wit NEW BALANCES.. -Sporatic
dick hed mcs, wit dem flacid, phalic soundin subjects- one of those jail urine roach xylophone nukkas (jurx-donwill)

I don't know. I don't exactly lust after the man (I ain't trying to make him mybabydaddy or anything). However, I can appreciate his craft. A lot of us let hormones get in the way of our artistic taste ( I mean, can YOU explain Vanity, Appollonia, or MC Brains? ). I feel Angiee on that Al B Sure comment, lol. You've all read artists' complaints about being viewed as just sex symbols. I enjoy Common's music, and that, like most every dern body up in here has already said, is the key point.
love, peace and hair grease,
grammy

"Who do you think I am, Willie Jo Sausagehead?" --My daddy
"Some folks say I'm a toe-low shaker. In response to Reply # 0

I don't get offended at all when Common or any other rapper for that matter uses the word "bitch and hoe" because I know that I don't carry myself like either. I'm a young lady and I behave that way. If other females would act accordingly, then rappers would have to find another group to disrespect in their albums.

Angiee, Angiee, Angiee:
We are so on the same vibe. Although I agree about the "office ho" thing, temptation is a mutha. Tyson Beckford though???WHOA. Jaguar said it best, "WHOA" is something negative, like "you're breath is like WHOA".
I just got back from my first Black Lily in Philly, at 4:30am this morning, and may I say that it some awe-inspiring. The positivity, the people, the music, the words, the vibe, the love and energy brought me back from some deep shit I was going through...and alot of things came full cirle within those couple of hours.
We all know that words are what we make them to be. But most of all, as black people we have the intelligence and ability to take certain words and incorporate them into our own dialect. Our poets, Commom included, aren't just out here making music to make money, like Master P or Cash Money. Our poets, the whole Okayplayer family included, have embarked on a journey to bring real black music back to the forefront.
The words may be harsh, but I hav always found the images we allow to be put out there are worse. I agree wit' fire, I will stop my passivity on the word bitch, when the images of black women as tits and ass cease in our music videos. Is this how we want to be represented?
No, then why are worried about a silly word like "bitch"? Take Amiri Baraka, b.k.a. LeRoi Jones, he told J.Edgar Hoover that his mother was going to die and that he was going to die. These words were meant to strike fear in the hearts of racist whites and empower blacks, in the dialect of black America. Now, focus back on Common, his words do the same thing, empower us through knowledge. Giving it to us in the only way some might know how to talk, or understand. Does it make the words right, I don't know, that's not for me to judge.
In that, yes, Common and Thought are attractive brotha's, but I see them as much more than just sexy. As I would want a man to see me a much more than sexy. These are beautiful and talented black men (both chocolate brown and cornbread included)who have come with some fresh air of realness. That is extraordinary in a day and age that allows regueritation of past hits become hits.

But a word to my sistas, if we accept generalizations as personifications of ourselves then we might as well let Little Kim and Foxy Brown be our spokepeople.

The brutal truth is that the bulk of white people in America never had any interest in educating black people, except as this could serve white purposes. It is not the black child's language that is in question, it is not his language that is despised: It is his experience. A child cannot be taught by anyone who despises him, and a child cannot afford to be fooled. A child cannot be taught by anyone whose demand, essentially, is that the child repudiate his experience, and all that gives him sustenance, and enter a limbo in which he will no longer be black, and in which he knows that he can never become white. Black people have lost too black children that way. (James Baldwin)

Honor the Iris's in your life!

RIP James "Jay Dee" Yancey

religion is the aspiration of man toward an idealized existence, in which the functions of god and man are harmonious, even identical. (c)amiri baraka
