"how i feel about the soulquarians"

i don't know how to say this. this is really hard for me considering the roots common and d'angelo are some of my favorite performers of this new hip-hop era. i don't know how i can say this considering the roots and common are two of my biggest influences in the hip-hop music i create. understand me when i say i am an okayplayer, but i'm not a dick rider. i don't want to say this but, FUCK A SOULQUARIAN
d'angelo's album-a dissapointment-there were some nice tunes don't get me wrong but, brown sugar sounded like a debut album and was cool for it's time but i expected him to step it up. songs sound too similar. why stick to using the same instruments if you can't make those instruments sound new or fresh every track.
common's album better than d'angelo's but still was not as innovative as one day it will all make sense. still not as unique as one day it all makes sense or ressurection.
is the soulquarians mission to make everyone sound the same. are tracks on lwfc and voodoo not interchangeable?
do the soulquarians believe they have the perfect formula for creating hip-hop soul?
do the soulquarians believe they have the ability to produce the massess?
or are they just cocky bastards?
my veiw is that my mentors are running out of creative juices. to succesfully produce the massess you have to beable to give each artist a unique sound.
i know i'm going to get shit on for this because the majority of you cats won't listen to new ideas that go against the grain. i just hope someone will listen respectably. you don't have to agree just listen.
-naeem j.
You're about to get flamed to hell (unless somebody already posted on this topic, in which case you'll get a couple snide respones telling you this). But let me speak upon your points, because I dont' think they're without merit.
Yeah, I'm a little concerned with the convergence among okayplayer artists. In a sense, it's only natural. The two people most responsible for any "soulquarian/okayplayer" sound seem to have very similar tastes in music and have been working together for five years. I admitt, as much as I like the Common album, part of me was like, "Oh, this again." I've posted on this before, but I think Quest and D (and feel free, either one of you, to tell me to shut my damn mouth) are more interested at this point in mining the groove than coming innovative. They've created a really funky sound, and they want to explore all the possibilities of it. Must it be exciting to do as a musician? Probably. Is it producing exciting music? Undoubtedly. Do "Things Fall Apart," "Voodoo," and "Like Water for Chocolate" resemble one another more than I'd like them to? Sure 'nuff.
But, I don't think we should complain too much. Unlike you, I think Voodoo is the shit. I've only listened to "Like Water for Chocolate" a couple times now, but it's pretty damn funky too. I'm enjoying the soulquarian sound for now, hoping and assuming that each artist is going to move onto something else soon. You hear the rumbles about D's next album. Black Thought's gonna give us a taste of the nasty with his jawn. My point? Man, it's only been three albums. They're savvy artists--they know they've got to go forward soon. But right now they're working a sound, with great results. It may get a little repetitive, but for the most part I say keep it going.
Besides, by the time the Voodoo tour is done, you KNOW they're gonna have something new. Either that, or they're never gonna speak to one another again.
Bryan
aim=bshelly24
"My restlessness is my nemesis"
---Mighty Mos

feb zack- soulicorn
Can I dream that you misspelled Zach de la Rocha's name and he is now a Soulquarian?
seriously, although i don't hear the similarity between TFA and voodoo as some have stated here, i do hear some similarity b/t voodoo and LWFC, in the sense that the vibe is familiar. i believe they were recorded at similar times.
my question to the initial poster is: what exactly is your problem with the two albums?
side note: i preferred the drums on LWFC
i have to listen to a mastered copy of LWFC, then listen to voodoo again, and return with more detailed commentary.
final side note: anyone notice a marked difference b/t jay dee production solo and the ummah? b/c most people act like it's the same when i hear something distinctly different, which i cannot yet describe. listen to the last two tribe albums with slum village's fantastic vol. 2 and help me out, huh, players?
Spread love,
Spirit
www.theamphibians.com
SUPPORT DEAD PREZ, ALBUM IN STORES NOW!!
www.soul-sessions.com
Hip-hop forever...power to the people
R.I.P. Well I guess this post is the equivalent of suicide cause they ar going to murder you for this post. I happen to think that D'angelo's alblum is outstanding, but that doesn't mean that I am at all satisfied with the status quo-with the soulaquarians vibe that has been brewing-quest makes a comment in his interview with D about evryone getting together and forming some type of soul "syndicate" and like you I hope that never happens, cause you're going have the "puffy" effect and everything that comes out of this little click will sound the same and we will lose the only real soul music that's being put out. one thing D's alblum does do a good job of is making you ready for the third one.-and to all the other okayplayer out there, have mercy on him for he know's not what he does.
"there is no off position on the genius switch!"-David Letterman

I wasn't gonna respond due to the fact that your post is just another in a long line of bitter hatred that some of the general public chooses to display on this board. But due to the fact that I, fire, really has a problem with idiots, i will do my best to respectfully respond, but with a fuck you under the breath of my words.
>i don't know how to say this.
>this is really hard for me
>considering the roots common and d'angelo
>are some of my favorite performers
>of this new hip-hop era. i
>don't know how i can say
>this considering the roots and common
>are two of my biggest influences
>in the hip-hop music i create.
>understand me when i say i
>am an okayplayer, but i'm not
>a dick rider. i don't want
>to say this but, FUCK A
>SOULQUARIAN
You saying this is the equivalent of me saying that I love all the songs that the Isleys have made, but Ernie Isley's guitar, just didn't do it for me. schizophranic? crying for attention? hater?
i love the soulquarians sound initially, but after hearing things fall apart, lwfc, and voodoo i hate the repetition. i know that they have the talent to make every album they work on sound fresh. quest did it four times with the roots. where did his creativity go? i shouldn't just blame quest maybe i should blame the vocalist for wanting a similar sound. like people want that classic premier sound.
"a TRUE music listener..." -fire
okay my point wasn't very clear. brown sugar and voodoo do not sound alike and that is not was saying. my point was the voodoo album did not take it to height of its potential. it was funky. no doubt, but i had to force my self to listen to the whole album without skipping tracks. the similarities of bass lines and guitar riffs bored me. now george clinton was funky and he new how to make songs fresh i doubt it was too many people saying "aww that p-funk shit is boring"
"have you every used a live instument?"-fire
no, don't know how to play any istrument i can't even play the triangle. are you telling me because i can't play an instrument i can't comment on how music sounds it's alot of people out there who diss swizz beats who don't know how to make a track but i bet you don't complain about that. i listen to alot of music and know the potential of a guitar. a guitar don't have to go blink blink BLINK BLIKN blink BLINK blink blink on every song. that i don't see you doing any better argument is bullshit. you don't know my potential. i could be the next jimmy hendrix for all you know. the next michael jackson. but since i don't have my own videos or web site you don't think my oppinion is valid.
of course, i just want attention. no, you know something your completely right i'm a hater despite my roots collection, my love for common's flow and lyrics, the number of times i've seen common and the roots perform.
the people who seem to be dying for attention are the people that post shit like "how sexy is common?" "happybirthday common!" "the roots the greatest band to every live!" "they won oh my god!the world has finally seen the light!" fuck that. i'm trying to have conversation and if you read the other post would see that there are people who agree with me. so my oppinion must not be so far fetched. YOU SUCKAAAAAAAAaaaaa....
-naeem j.

Everybody on this post knows I respect them, so don't get all insecure.
File this under "Pot calling the kettle" or "Let s/he who is without sin." A lot of people who have been with okayplayer from the jump complain nowadays that people are disrespectful and vulgar on the boards. Yet as soon as someone posts a little bit of ignorance in their tone, people are screaming out fuck yous and writing him off.
Bigheezy's original post was a little harsh, but is that a reason to continue the trend? Can we get some turning of the other cheek going on here? It's not like he's without a point. The beats on Common's album sound like they came from the same guys who worked on Voodoo. As I said before, I don't find that particularly distressing, but it's a valid point. "Like Water for Chocolate" is dope, just not all that innovative. And just because someone offers a criticism of his/your/my/our heroes (however unfortunate the tone) is no reason to try to silence him with insults.
Bryan
aim=bshelly24
"My restlessness is my nemesis"
---Mighty Mos

Okayplayers--
Yes, it's frustrating to see someone diss or talk bad about something you care about (trust me, it happens enough in photography), but that's when you move on. I think we can argue the point without saying someone is COCKY or IGNORANT. When "VooDoo" first came out, I had people complaining left and right (excuse the pun). I just told them to listen to it again. I found out that you can't waste your time trying to convert people to your opinion. Just be happy that YOU like it, and be happy with it. Later.
--leroy b.
________________________________________
DONNIE'S GROUNDED! Beginning April 1st, no more posts, replying or lurking for a month.

In response to Reply # 16

I know this is a lil off the subject but I come to okp to hear a difference of opinion. Since when did liking every thing an okp artist does become a requirement for membership. I think if we all shared the same opinion this would be a very boring forum and I wouldn't come here. Most of the people who post regularly have utterd a effa this or effa that at one time or another, so I dont understand that as a basis for conviction. Really it took a lotta balls go aginst the grain and say that he didnt like the soulquarian cus I'm quite sure he knew that he would get many people in an uproar...and isn't that what this site is about... getting away from the masses who don't make waves and all think a like. Attacking people with differnt opinions will only promote okayconformity, which I have noted to be a growing trend on the boards, and we will become the mindless mass that we abhor so much.
Instead of saying "your stupid or you ignorant because you dont like the same thing I like" try "I like the soulquarians because..."
--------------------------------------------------
excuse any misspelling or incomplete sentences I dont type well at 1:30am

The Soulquarians are getting kinda repetitive. I heard they were working on Com's and D's album at the same time so maybe that's why they go hand and hand. Quest said "Chicken grease" was suppose to be on Com's album which is scary that a r&b track for D was suppose to be on Com's album but it seems after reading the tracking list, that Jay Dee produced the bulk of this album. He did 9 out of the 16 tracks. In Quest's review of "LWFC" he said he thought Com deep down inside wants to be a soul singer, so maybe this is the intro to "Com...the soul singer." And about the sequencing of the album...I heard the bootleg copy of the album and I felt like that sequencing was better then the final version. (just saying that cuz Quest said he didn't like the sequencing on One Day) But hey...that's just me. I think Com would've done better sticking with NO ID and Doug Inf but again that's just my opinion. I guess I just like those sampled SP/MPC drums versus Quest live drums. Just me but my favorite Roots album was "Illadelph" for the simple fact they were sampling. Whether it be sampling Quest's drums or whatever. Illadelph was SO much harder than "Do You Want More" and I guess I just like "HARD" beats. But if Com wants to be a soul singer, "LWFC" was the perfect start.

Ferris Bueler is one of my all time favorite movies. To call it "cliche" is entirely missing the point. High school life IS a big cliche, everything about it. You can either get wrapped up in the pointlessness or you can get a head start and begin figuring out who you really are, what you can really do, and really begin to REALLY enjoy it. It's about being able to get away with as much as you can BECAUSE you can.
And the argument that just becuase John Hues went on to do Home Alone means his past achievements are any less IS SIMPLY PREPOSTEROUS! Listen to _bigheezy_ and what he is saying, not how he is saying it. So much confusion is in the world because people pay too much attention to HOW something is being said instead of WHAT they're saying. When it comes down to it everybody, no matter what your beliefs religiously are, want the exact same things out of life, we all just ask differently. --Just because what Steivie is doing now dwarfs in comparison to his past work doesn't make his past work any less. Same for Mr. Hues.
GO BACK AND WATCH FERRIS BUELER AND BREAKFAST CLUB WITHOUT THINKING OF HOME ALONE AND BABY'S DAY OUT, and get off the drugs.
Love,
ToeJam

Because in my mind, i find in NO WAY "One Day" to be a third as inovating as the intro on "Like Water For Chocolate"! What was so innovating? (Not meant as a diss to anyone) The generic Roots joint "All Night".. the sloppy De La joint? Please name one thing on that album that u have never heard before. To be continued..

How about a song dealing with abortion? Or a song dealing with a three part mystery? Innovation...that word is used SO freely nowadays because there's not enough good music on the airwaves. What do you like so much about "Time Travelin" (since that's the album's intro) The live instruments? you got that with D's album right? What's SO innovative on "LWFC"? Anything that was done on "LWFC" was done on ALL three Roots album! Com's voice going in and out with a slight distortion..you can go back to 95 to "DYWM" and find that. "Payback is a grandmother" is just another instalment in the Stolen Moments series. the questions reminds me of "Let's Get it On" off of the Love Movement when Tip was asking all the questions to the short. A Film Called Pimp is nothing more that a revisit to "I'm Not Havin It with Mc Lyte back in '89 (just with a pimp and ho feel to it) SO again, I ask you....what is SO innovative about "LWFC"?

you know what's innovative, IMO? Creating some shit that you think is so much better, putting it out, then being able to shat on someone elses' innovation. Show me or make an album, using the same level of instrumentation of LWFC, Voodoo, or anything else that the "soulquarians" have. Until then this argument has no value except for, "i don't like it cause they are getting all the attention that they deserve." Do you see what I'm getting at? Stevie Wonder's shit, sounds like Stevie Wonder's shit. The man has been making music for 40 years and he still "sounds" the same to me. Underdig?
You know what? I'm not gonna argue anymore cause I haven't heard LWFC, but I have heard Voodoo and it's absolutely perfect.
GET CRUNK!
I AM BLACK MUSIC
"In the name of love and war
took my shield and sword
from the pit of the bottom
that knows no floor
Like the rain to the dirt
Like the vine to the wine
From the alpha creation
Till the end of time......." - D'Angelo
"FIRE!" - Ohio Players
"Step into my office. Innovation has to due with live instrumentation? See innovation to me is when Pete Rock showed the world how to use the multi pitch (a button that had been on the SP for years) to echo horns in or out. Innovation is Pete showing us that we could chop drums instead of using full break beats. Primo showing us to chop samples and replay them. Or how the beatminerz showed the world that you can filter a sample to create a bassline. Innovation for ME means doing something that's never been done before, or showing us another way to do it. There's a BIG difference to me between innovation and a good idea. Puff having Mary sing over hip hop beats was a good idea (that Ron G had been doing on his mix tapes) but not innovated ya feel me? Yeah, Voodoo is GREAT but Voodoo is soul music, Common is hip hop, and please don't do the whole "...but it's all black music"! Yeah that's true but that 's why we have different genres of black muisc. Like I said before I couldn't even imagine Chicken Grease being on "LWFC"...but that's just me. voodoo was innovative to me because it seems like you were present on the live jam session. The majority of heads don't like it for that reason but when' the last time that's been done? When I listen to voodoo it takes me back to Stevie's "Inner Visions" but "LWFC" to me is like a "hip hop" follow to Voodoo, but innovated? Like I said anything that was done on "LWFC" has been done by the Roots numerous times so I just don't feel you, but it's all good Fire.

So, guess in this day in age, the only innovation is live music...that's cool so...you don't like hip hop besides the Roots and Common? That's...cool, but whether it's live instruments or not, the shit these producers do with sampling is crazy innovative, sorry if you don't agree.

I fucking love electronic sounds, but I love live instruments even more. Nothing personal, just my preference. But, I will say this, I have alot more respect for people that play instruments. I played the piano for six years when I was young, but I'm not good at it. My older sister? She is a prodigy, she just didn't pursue it. So, I apologize for making it seem like I hate synthesizers, I don't. I think you don't realize the difference between the real and the unreal.
GET CRUNK!
I AM BLACK MUSIC
"In the name of love and war
took my shield and sword
from the pit of the bottom
that knows no floor
Like the rain to the dirt
Like the vine to the wine
From the alpha creation
Till the end of time......." - D'Angelo
"FIRE!" - Ohio Players
"Step into my office. And there are some things you can do on a drum machine that a live drummer can't do (because you have ten fingers to hit drum machine buttons, each holding a different sound, while drummers only have two sticks and a foot petal ).

I don't know...both acoustic instruments and electronic instruments both require a high level of skill to master...why get into this debate? it's all music. how could you have a preference over the form of instrumentation when it's all organized noise? the best music is the best composition of random sounds...where the sounds originate from seems moot to me in one's enjoyment of the final composition.

I'll get right into it:
>d'angelo's album-a dissapointment-there were >some nice tunes don't get me wrong but, brown >sugar sounded like a debut album and was cool >for it's time but i expected him to step it up. >songs sound too similar. why stick to using the >same instruments if you can't make those >instruments sound new or fresh every track.
I've heard several people say Voodoo is Brown Sugar #2.... I honestly can't see how ANYONE could draw up this comparison. Voodoo is on a whole different level from Brown Sugar. Whether you like Voodoo's direction or not is one thing, but to say it's just another Brown Sugar makes no sense to me. Personally, I think Voodoo is absolutely outstanding, like nothing I've heard in a long time. Since the day I bought it, it's been played at least once a day in its entirety... I honestly don't think I've skipped a day. And I probably won't for a long time.
>common's album better than d'angelo's but still >was not as innovative as one day it will all >make sense. still not as unique as one day it >all makes sense or ressurection.
Haven't heard LWFC... I don't think music always has to be 'innovative'. Good music is good music, regardless of whether it's been done before. I think their only goal is to create solid music... and they're doing it.
>is the soulquarians mission to make everyone >sound the same. are tracks on lwfc and voodoo >not interchangeable?
If LWFC sounds like Voodoo... I'll be damn happy. When the last track on Voodoo ends, and that quick reverse tour through the album begins, I can't help but wish for more. If Common cures that desire, I'll kiss his feet.
>do the soulquarians believe they have the >perfect formula for creating hip-hop soul?
I don't think so. I DO think they think they're putting out good shit, and they're milking their current groove. I give them props for it, too.
>or are they just cocky bastards?
Um... quite honestly, they could be cocky and I wouldn't care. I don't know 'em, though, so I can't quite comment.
>my veiw is that my mentors are running out of >creative juices. to succesfully produce the >massess you have to beable to give each artist a >unique sound.
Not true. Man, while reinventing your sound is cool, so is playing shit for the sake of playing. Because it's simply good. Why is everyone on some 'it doesn't sound fresh' shit?
>i just hope someone will listen respectably. you >don't have to agree just listen.

I listened. I disagree. But I respect your opinion. I think you should wait a year and see what else happens with 'em. Catch the D' Tour. Work with the sound.
-thebigfunk
"Grownups have it in them to be creative, and sometimes, with the help of ambition, hard work, and a bit of luck they actually are, but being grownups, they have no sooner created some epoch-making invention than they become a slave to it." - The Tin Drum

I had the opprotunity to meet Brother Questlove briefly at Radio City Music Hall, at the infamous Thursday night show. i must say he was all that i made him out to be in my mind, from reading posts about the great things he had done for others and how his personality comes across in his posts, Sincere, Genuine & down to earth. I wanted to preference those statements so that the person who reads my thread will understand i respect Bro Questlove to the fullest and am not trying to "throw shade" or "hate".
However, i agree 100% with what you said and felt from the word go (after listening to Voodoo thoroughly and being a D'angelo follower since day one) that the finished product turned out to be "a soulquarian production", with a depressing feel to it. I cannot come to grips with why a Q-Tip, common, etc,etc would have ANY INPUT in D's work. Is Mr. Archer trying to become a emcee or is his aim and end that of honing his skills as a musician? I thought it was the latter.
After sitting through about half of the show i was kinda confused. After plugging "his band" the "soulquarians" several x's i wondered if D'angelo, the sole entity before, the man that did it all alone, a 1 man show, was relinquishing that identity and felt he could accomplish more with a band of skilled musicians. I did notice that D seemed/appeared 2be happier moving about on the stage freely as he was acusstomed to staying behind the Rhodes in the past.
If Voodoo is any indication as to what we should expect from D in the future, TO ME, HIS FUTURE DOES'NT LOOK PROMISING ANYMORE.
My suggestion: whatever formula you had for Brown Sugar, be it Richmond dwelling, be it working solo, be it drum maching it, whatever, please consider my sincere request.
Chrishawn

You are entitled to your opinion, and what you say may or may not be true. Innovation is in the ear of the listener. I, personally, am glad to hear music that's not laced by Puffy or Timbaland. Every musician/producer has a certain sound. For example, tell me, can you not tell when Babyface writes/produces a track? It has his feel/sound. If you work with a certain team, in this case Soulquarians, you can't expect them not to stamp the project with their seal. I think that it was kinda harsh with the "cocky bastards" thing, but as I said you are entitled to your opinion.

i was listenin to TFA this mornin.....and LWFC is nuthin like TFA..........sure soulquarians did voodoo....they did LWFC, so there will be similarities, but rather than sayin its repetitive, or not innovative, how bout they are establishing a sound in black music, that is not present in anyway......
you can never replace MPC's etc. but understand that with samplin laws, most cats that used to use samples, are no where to be found....so the musicians take place of the instruments, and create the breaks themselves, or chop em and replay em so no one can figure em out....thas creativity....i challenge yall to tell me the sample Jay used in "Aphrodisiac..." or did he use one at all?? thas innovation and grotesque creativity if you ask me....
its a different sound, like ahmir said, singin on a hiphop record acts as cryptonite for a lot of "heads"....the same heads that think Ghost's lyrics make sense, and that his album was brilliant.....
and you cant say that "LWFC dont sound like a com album" cause com dont have a sound....Res, sounded totally different from Can I......One Day sounded totally different from both those....and now LWFC sounds totally different from the other 3....so where or what exactly is "com's sound"?!

One Love
RamXL
(beat junkie)

"I think that the isolation mentality in hip hop, which comes from the thug mentality, and which comes from the capitalist mentality, is tearing apart the fabric of the community" Bobbito

Quest/DAngelo et al have formed a crew, for better or worse, remember when you had friends, and ya'll would build? you know, come up with stupid names for yourselves and secret handshakes and all that? Well, these cats came with that same vibe, (?: Hey, lets make a soul syndicate, and then people will be on our jock! D: YEAH!) and they ARE putting out some of the dopest soul music right now (not the only shiz tho, Rahsaan Patterson, and even if she is his ex, Angie Stones album is aite)...you can hate their work all you want, want them to change the style all that, just phrase it better next time. and tell the truth, if you got a pass from ? to come kick it backstage, you know you would be geeked to go, and the first thing out your mouth would be like 'Silent Treatment was DOPE!!', jumping directly on nutsack, with maximum swing. no offense intended so dont take none, and there wont be none....

brother, you came foul from the jump w/ the 'FUCK A SOULQUARIAN' thing. and asking for a respectful reply was straight monkeybar action...aka childish. D: YEAH!) and they ARE putting out some of the dopest soul music right now (not the only shiz tho, Rahsaan Patterson, and even if she is his ex, Angie Stones album is aite)...you can hate their work all you want, want them to change the style all that, just phrase it better next time. and tell the truth, if you got a pass from ? to come kick it backstage, you know you would be geeked to go, and the first thing out your mouth would be like 'Silent Treatment was DOPE!!', jumping directly on nutsack, with maximum swing. no offense intended so dont take none, and there wont be none....

ya'll give thanks

and whoever recommended that Zap Mama, 'preciate it, its in constant rotation

Bin

on sabbatical.

does it really matter?

between Timbalands album, Ginuine & Alliyah, right? Coem on now, you know producers have the same sound. what makes Soulaquarians different? I'll tell you what . .TALENT! None of the other muthafuckas on your CD shelf can even play a fuckin' instrument. It's about teh duplication of the dope shit the dope way . . .instruments. Perhaps that doesn't amount to much to you . . . but you may be of the new generation that likes to hear the same dispondant shit . . go ahead.
Let the innovators roll into 2G and you still fiddle with your beat maker.

DAAAAAAMN, Tiny!!! You are off the cliff with your, but I feel you. As I said in my response, you can't expect a producer to produce somebody and not stamp their seal on it! That would be just like Keith Sweat not whinin, Babyface not cryin, and D not lickin those lips!!!!

Peace, Love, DOVE!!!

Even if that was true, so what? It takes talent to freak a sampler as well. Jay Dee can't play instruments either, from what I hear. He freaks the samples and he's MARVELOUS at it. Surely you don't think he is untalented merely because he can't play a traditional string or wind instrument (or percussion)? Come on now...

Hey, Beats By the Pound is all live instrumentation too. Are they inherently more talented than Premier?

Anyway, point is, you don't have to clown how certain people make music to big up your fam.

Soulquarians are talented. Jay Dee, Chief Xcel, Shadow, Primo, Pete Rock, and lots of sampling cats are talented too. Heed the signoff: spread love.
