"soulquarians.."

i notice alot of mixed feelings towards the soulquarians..
me personally..i feel like they are dope..
i mean come on..

jaydee is amazin..
quest is amazin..
james poyser (who is he i dunno) but the cat must be dope..
deangelo...is amazin..

all they are missin is prince or some shit..

compared to all the other com albums it really sounds good....real good..
even the lyrics sound alot more polished..like a seasoned veteran.

the over all mood that they conveyed on coms new joint is very effective ..in my opinion..(productionwise) almost more effective than the CLASSIC resurection...i say this because it sounds like he is comfortable..
one day was dope..but the over all production wasnt as sonically connected as this one..
the ONLY thing i missed and to be honest expected was that dug infinite/no i.d. signature song..
but i understand...

this post is about the soulquarians tho so what i ask is for those that dont like or have gripes w/ the production...why?

i am cloudy as to wether or not they were the soulquarians before coms album but i know the sound that they have is nice...i like it..

soulquarians are the shit...in my eyes..

trust me...yall dont want me to post..

In response to Reply # 0

cats are too comfortable.

plain and simple.

to understand our sound one needs to understand the business of hip-hop.

okay. let's take a classic hip-hop song like hmmm "bonita applebum".

that song could never be made today. why? i'll tell you.

drums- little feat
loop- ramp (roy ayers group)
other loop- minnie riperton's old group on cadet (name escapes me now)

think of a pie.

now back then cats were sampling like there was no tommorow. no clearence needed. just loopin. some were simple (see: marley production, and jungle brothers) some were complex (see: de la, pe, and post "ill" beasties) in time sampling caught the attention of law firms and publishing companies.

time to pay the piper.

so what once was a simple song like "bonita". now could be a problem. why?

to clear a song you need permission from the songwriter, and the record company from which you sampled from. so that means the writer of the little feat song says well i want %30 of the song since the drums are a key part (everyone thinks their part is the "key" part) then warner says well since this came from our master tapes we want $10,000.

that was just the drums y'all

now to clear the loops.

so okay minnie's former group is a lil hip and they charge you a reasonable price cause they want you to come back and use em again (hence the reason why george clinton and the isley bros got used so much) they say give us $7,000 and no publishing (a miricle) but then the label wants to act a fool ("we want y'all to pay $15,000 a year to license this song) then hey if you are dr. dre, sure you can bite the bullet cause you have inter$cope behind you, but what if you are grand daddy iu?

lost?

okay imagine if this was "night of the living baseheads?" and you had to clear 19 songs.

19.

david bowie wants %75 publishing for "fame" ("succatash is a ? for kids who make cash, sellin drugs to the brother man instead of the other man!!" griff's music.)

then what if james brown wants %50 for the horn loop? thats %125 percent.

that can't happen. %100. so no song.

so that has left us with no options in 2000.

sure you'll hear a loop or maybe shawn j. will sneek a sample, or maybe the godzilla cats will never catch on to how phar made a classic this summer. that's the risk you take.

the way we deal with it is .......play

to me i see no diference in jay sampling rhodes, or d playing em

i think y'all are uncomfortable with the singing. but what do you expect from cats who sit around and listen to donny, stevie, and fela 24/7?

you wonder why cats are sounding alike in hip hop?

when you listen to that shit (even in hating) you have it in your system.

hear that song you hate on the radio? in the club? in passing cars? now you singing it?

see? it's in your system

cat's can proclaim "purist" all they want. it's like being a vegetarian, but sneekin a steak in every now and then. that's how you damage yourself. then you start to accept it.

i'm not saying right or wrong. i'm just saying to do another ressurection today is impossible. specially when george benson sued com for the "her" loop.

now the thing i find funny is cats cry no id/ and doug in. but they were sampling shit that sounds as mellow as our shit.

think about it. "communism" could easily be on this album. even "her" music could too.

look. i think it's some idiot shit to say you don't like it cause it sounds like the roots. which says "y'all used instruments". well duh motherfucker, samplers sample instruments too!
so that's idiot shit. and if you pay attention, live music is all in hip hop (dre's 2001 is scott storch son! grand wizzards/soulquarians everywhere!!!!!) all of cash money is keyboards yet i hear no bitching. so cats on that hating shit can suck my dick.

for real. i said it. get off your ass and start a new sampling law, or move out the fucking way.....

bitch.

it's not about sampling vs. playing

it's about getting bored with an album.
all of you are talented. that's why i am so upset.
you look up to some of the greatest musicians and singers ever, but your recent work (lwfc+voodoo) isn't close to being as great as a prince or curtis mayfeild or joni mitchel album.

your music is funky but it ain't taking us no where. every roots album was a break through album. now your argument why your fans are starting to turn away is because we don't understand the music buisness?

we hate because we hate the fact that you play live instruments?

get real. that's the reason why we fell in love with the roots. that's reason why lauryn and clef and mos and common started performing with bands.

i'm a idiot because lwfc didn't move me?
i need to suck your dick because voodoo was repetitive and boring?

i'm just saying this because i need attention?

quest and everyone else who believe my bad response to these albums is because i don't appreciate music or i'm just talking to cause a ruckus need to wake up!

fuck yall! that argument is bullshit! i'm not saying that everyone should hate these two new releases. the music is good, but the sound is repetive and not very innovative. and i'm not the only one who feels this way about the two albums.

and that is the reason why i think quest is so pissed off. because he is in the hot seat. he's starting to get valid criticism and doesn't know what to do about it.

and mos need to stop bitching? ha! mos album was alot more innovative than common's and d'angelo's.
if he would have worked out more and stripped down but naked in the umi says video maybe you would be willing to give him more time on the tour!

Yo! Big heazy(or whatevadahellitis...)They may "sound the same" in a certain fashion...if you don't like it then tough...don't enjoy 'em like some of the rest of us...go play your JAY-Z or PUFFY cd and listen to the samples that they paid their sellout-ass dollars for...if The Soulquarians wanted to sell out like them, then maybe they'd have millions of dollars to throw around for sample clearances and make another BONITA APPLEBUM or H.E.R. ...catch my drift...use your imagination or try to even put yourself in ?uest's big strollin' Pumas...it ain't easy, so they do what comes natural...they just PLAY.....that's my 2 SENSE...peace

Shit. I'd rather listen to a million dollar sample than a Prince/Mayfield biteoff riff from your shit. As long as I aint fallin asleep! And since we're on the subject of sampling, let's just hypothetically say that these Ummah/Soulquarian so called "innovators" did come out of the era during which true Funk and Soul was during the late 60's and most of the 70's. Then afterwards hip hop started. You wit me? I bet you clowns a million of them dollars spent by Jay-Z that none of these Ummah/Soulquarian joints would have been the source of sampling that most of the earlier hip hop joints took they're "innovatingly" shit from like James Brown. Come to think of it, James Brown is probably the most sampled soul artist by hip hop in hip hop's history. And this is why you revolutioners gotta understand - that sampling was and will always be an essential ingredient of hip hop. You can't eliminate that. Marly Marl even declares that it's a part of what the music is. Think about it ya'll, could you imagine Rakim's classics containing any samples from the Ummah rather than James Brown? Think how ungoldy his shit woulda been. I rest my case.

heat- tony allen (fela's drummer in case your the ignoramous i think you are)

doinit- bass rick james, keys keith jarret

the light- drums detroit emeralds, piano and chorus bobby caldwell

funky for you- drums the roots (adrenaline!), keys keith jarret

6th sense- i dunno where primo sampled from

nagchamba- drums isley brothers, keys keith jarret

thelonius- drums the crykle, piano ahmad jamal

grandmother- drums kool and the gang, clav kool and the gang, rest james brown

so there you have it. 80% of this album is *gasp* samples?

first of all, i'm here friggin everyday, everyhour on the hour. i've never seen your posts before now all of a sudden you are gonna come out from the woodwork on some hating shit. some bitch shit at that (y'all not hip hop).

whatever. i know this is a disguise post, cause you are too bitch too use your real post name. so okay money. it's sampled. now what the fuck you gonna say? it's too clean......you should've record at d and d?

whatever dukes. come with something else other than y'all don't sample. my point was if THE SHIT WERE LEGAL WE'D DO IT MORE OFTEN. BUT SINCE WE GOTTA SAVE LOOT SO THAT WE CAN PAY THE FRIGGIN SERVER TO KEEP THIS SITE UP SO THAT YOU CAN CRY LIKE A BITCH (damn is this me?) NIGGA PLEASE....I'M DONE (yeah right)

?uest,
The name's Omar by the way. You still need a last name with that? Anomonimouty isn't the topic we're discussing on your financially burdening site anyways. (That's why I love this internet phenomenon so much. It's more thrilling than than listening to the new Common lp nowadays anyways}) Sorry ?uest! No more snare remarks. I guess it is in all of us huh. I do got love for you though. You are by the illest on the bang set though duke. Regardless. So you yourself made my finite knowledge aware of the sampling you utilized for your latest project and I do appreciate the forensic breakdown of the elements. But in any case, it still has no relevance to me because I'm still not being moved by the new background material no matter how uncorforming you molded it to be. Whether it's clean or dirty, hard or mellow, commercial or underground, jazz or funk, against the grain or not, I aint feelin this particular effort!! There's nothing else I can add to that ?uest. If I don't like it I don't like it that don't mean I'm hatin. Sound familiar? And I'm not hatin. I just can't digest what you feedin me this time. Ya'll are still on a league of your own though. There's the love. My opinion however, no matter how much time I might be wastin on it, and also the time and money on your end with the whole site deal - evidently is disturbing to you. That just shows that I accomplished what I sought out to do. Not to hate, but to be heard. And c'mon what good is a forum when it only has one-sided views! By the way, don't you guys give like bargain packages at your store section for people short on cash? How bout adding some recently purchased Common cd's!! Aight aight. That's it. No more. I'm gone! Here' a lesson to be learned by artists who can't take the heat from all types of criticism. It don't mean squat to us fans though! It's from Badu - your own colleague money!

You can't deny, though, that cats are often reluctant to get into a new sound. They like their safe mtv shit. And in that respect, when something different comes along, they often diss it because it's different. Even if it's a throwback to music from a while ago, they don't recognize and they won't give it a chance. But this isn't even my point.

>and that is the reason why
>i think quest is so
>pissed off. because he is
>in the hot seat. he's
>starting to get valid criticism
>and doesn't know what to
>do about it.

What qualifies as valid criticism? Whose opinion is valid? Whose opinion is not? I consider myself very well versed in music... not only do I listen to a wide array, but I have a good feel for the business, I play seven instruments, I know a lot of musical technique/theory, and I'm a sound technician for a theatre. I've got music knowledge backing me up. But I don't think that necessarily makes me that much more of a valid critic than the next guy... I can give more reasons than some for an album's worth (or lack thereof), but in the end, one either likes the album or he doesn't. That's that.
A lot of cats are feeling the Soulquarians. Even people not acquainted with them are recognizing their sound: case in point, slipped on the new Common the day I got it. Cold Blooded came on, my friend said "Hey, that sounds a lot like some of that other stuff you've been listening too lately... I mean, it's more hip hop, but it has some of that flavor of Voodoo, or maybe The Roots?" I explained to him that the same guys that worked on Voodoo worked on this album... and TFA, etc. He nodded, said that made sense. Yesterday, he bought Voodoo.
This has gotten to be a long post. And I think I made my point.

money. "voodoo" is d's second record. i've seen many a sophomore attempt. personally i see it some classic ass shit. the sound is certainly like nothing i've heard before. the harmonies alone are backround singing 101. you are comparing d to cats who have left masterworks. funny but i'll say it again. who in 2000 is doing this? who? brian mcknight? the barry white comeback album??!? i hate saying that but....save for choice few....who

and boring? who says classic shit has to have "!" all behind it? if it is boring to you then

what is: THERE'S A RIOT GOIN ON?, DON JUANS RECKLESS DAUGHTER, IN A SILENT WAY, BITCHES BREW, OR ON THE CORNER (I CAN HEAR YOU NOW "SHIT IS TOO REPETITIVE!!")

look downbeat did it, rolling stone did it, and you (whoever you may be. radio host ain't it 202?)

bitches and on the corner were "horrible experiments" to downbeat. then 10 years later downbeat changes their tune: @@@@@ classic!!! wow!!!! a staple!!!!!

around the world, parade, and sign: same thing. "not purple rain......blah blah blah....."
now? motherfuckers will kill for another "sign".

so you made your mind up that LWFC and VOODOO are "boring". my thing is hey i don't know (nor do i care to change to your standards) what your standards are.

i hear "player player" as a cinematic experience
you hear "player player" as a 7 minute waste.

i hear "nagchamba" as a rich lush exercise in keyboard/guitar experiments.

you hear "nagchamba" as something that can't blend in with "simon says".

i mean in the end you think im gonna say "wow i hope i pleased big 202?" i mean don't get me wrong. i love my supporters. but i gotta make some shit that will please me.

>your music is funky but it
>ain't taking us no where.

hmmm if you study the history of african music (assuming you are an african) you should know that groove is the center of all things.

james browns jams were 8 to 14 minutes long.
fela? 18 to 24 minutes.
george clinton same thing.

so where should it take us?

i hear codas, changes, real chords, bridges, modulations (sic) on "voodoo"

i hear panning, floating voices, experiments, non conventional (and in 2000....what is conventional?) instruments on voodoo.

so where else?

lyrics? "the blood of god is my defense...let it drip down to my seed" vs. "if u back it up, you can hold my ice......owe me back like it's money i spent...."

again this is about preferences. i like lush keyboards and rhodes and arps. tight snares that give you headaches, bass that sounds like subs and off time playing like my 6th round of scotch.

so assuming you are speaking of the "earlier" work...i can't imagine what appeals to you. so i assume that you found "essaywhuman" and "datskat" experimental cause that was an OBVIOUS marriage of two genres.

sorry cat. i'm past that. and if you really paid attention you would know that each shit is different in its own right. so for experimentation to please you, do you have to have it spoon fed everytime? like: doing a rhyme in 7/8 meter to a banjo in a different language? personally the sign of a true champ is one who dosn't show boat.

last i looked i have more people in our corner with every release. as for you fly by nighters (you know, the cats who come up and have to swear that they have the first edition organix, and "these other cats don't know what time it is". they cry like babies who don't wanna share their toys......"i knew em first. they ain't the same no more.

look.....just throw the record away.

that's all.

damn money.

I am sure this is the problem. Based off what I've heard heads saying about this Common album and other underground heros of late - like Pharoe Monch - that's the whole issue. The underground audience is as fickle as the mainstream one, and once they don't feel they have control over an artist anymore, it's over. The Soulquarians are just a threat to some fans. In the D interview when you talked about why can't acts like De La, D, 'Kast, Comm, etc. work together like Ruff Ryders do, I think one reason could end up being that the core audience could turn against the artists. Maybe that's ok, since like you said, with each album The Roots are getting a wider audience (and Outkast had to lose some to gain some and then get them back again). But there's not just this knee-jerk protecitvness underground heads have about anyone they see as "their own" and whose popularity they can't control. You can't avoid the backlash. But maybe when you guys are making records like Voodoo and LWFC that will be future classics and also widen the appeal of your style of music today, if you stay strong and keep going on that path, five or ten years down the line the hip-hop landscape will have evolved enough that it'll be easier for the next generation, and we'll see the fruits of your labor. I'm not trying to get all idealstic here, it's just the way I see it.

?uestlove's exemplary Cash Money lyrics aren't that different than the opening of "Simon Says."

PM is very good on Sounboming 2. His album, which I admit I do not know well, strikes me as unfinished and lacking foundation.

SAY WHA!?!

Pharoah Monch is definitely a hero to me. His album may not be "ground-breaking" progressive hip hop, but to me, it's as hip hop as you can get.
For me, growing up, hiphop was all about rockin the party, throw-ya-hands-up ya know? That's what I get from Pharoahe's album. His rhyme schemes are still unparalled, his rapid-fire, crisp delivery is untouchable. What else can you say? I even liked his album slightly more than Mos Defs.

He drops all kinds of diverse topics, incredible metaphors, just pure sickness. Don't believe me? go get a transcript of his lyric sheet. peace

real quick cuz i don't have much time. ?uest, thanks for the bizness breakdown.

as far as people who say lwfc and voodoo sound the same i just don't feel you. ok, lwfc has drums and voodoo has drums. lwfc has keys and voodoo has keys. lwfc has guitar and voodoo has guitar. lwfc and voodoo have similar rhythyms and tempos, alright. the same people worked on both albums, yes this is true. but no song sounds at all repetitive or the same to me! each and every song to me is like a total seperate entity. each is different and yet each has enough in common that when placed in a the collective an amazing album is created. an album that flows together so well (ie. props for the sequencing). personally i rank these two albums as the best releases thus far for 2000!

Hunted and penned in an inglorious spot,
While round us bark the mad and hungry dogs,
Making their mock at our accursed lot.
If we must die, O let us nobly die
So that our precious blood may not be shed
In vain, then even the monsters we defy

No matter how far you try to take it with your prolific abstracts, you still won't earn back any of our appreciation for this album that you're so desperately tryin to attain. I get more of a "groove" hearin joints like Buck 50 then Long as its Funky or whatever shit that thing is. Rza is one example of a genuine hip hop producer. You's aint. Go ahead. hold on now, blood. i feel your pain, but Rza has done some very well-constructed beats. A lot of well-respected producers have used loops. It's the digging for the loop that is the art. Jay Dee and Rza are BOTH talented producers. Let's spread that love, okay?

I think I kinda hear what your saying.
Listening to LWLC I kinda felt like it has some simlarities to voodoo. The instrumentation is kinda the same in some parts but I don't agree with your argument that LWLC is boring and repetitive. I mean you are witnessing a new fuel of hiphop through common that really hasn't been touched much as far as I know. Not many artists out there even take a chance on a different style. So many cats just care about making benjamins. We are blessed to have artists like common, d'angelo, the roots and others who make hip hop not the money but the the love.
I guess it sounds the same to you but trust me most people have never even heard of anything like lwfc. The stuff they play on the radio and mtv are the real boring untalented shit. Man check the 6th sense.. the revolution is here..

hehe your already sick of the sound when most people don't even know it exists.

I am so sick of 12 year old coming in hear who weren't even around for the first part of hip hop and act like there's a "recipe" for hip hop. Africans and they're music had always evolved. The problem isn't that we can' get ahead, it's that we stifle each other before we can get started. ?uest I done told you about arguing with people who ain't as smart as you!
In any event, if you use the same instruments, a lot of times shit sounds the same. I don't suppose Alliyah, Genuine and Missy sound the same? same producers same sound. SOme people just particularly like the sound.
Fuck yeah it's innovative if it hasn't been done. It's funny that people compare D' to Prince like Prince was original. People sworethat he was just like Little Richard, but youngsters don't know, they just pop off.
Prince was an innovator in that he his music had it's own content, mixture and evolves as he evolves. WTF?! No one is doing what Soulquarians or the Roots do. Unfortunately, not many people like "music". It's been replaced with beat machines.
Keep on truckin' babies! Damn let me turn on Nag Champa again.

Sometimes, it takes a person to read the dirty truth to understand the difficulty. I'm humbled at how difficult it is to make a song, get clearance, get denied, go back to make the "hit song" cuz your shit was shot down, etc....

Anyways, I bought the Common. Love the smell..

I am Feelin you Quest. I really do not understand how people can be hating on Common or D'Angelo's new albums. I respect you guys so much for bringing live insturmentation into today's hip hop. Im tired of so many sampled loop crap, that is what is really repetetive. Com's new joint is amazing, I feel it is his best overall work, although It does'nt have a song like Retrospect and (damn I forgot the name of that song with Cee-Lo about religion) but ya'll know what I am talking about. The Lyrics are real and the beats are beautiful, I am especially feeling 6th Sense, The Light, Dooinit, Cold Blooded, The ?'s, Ghetto Heaven, and Song For Assata. As for D'Angelo's album Im feeling the movement it is taking R&B into, I do miss the lack of quality Melodies, with the exception of a few songs, but overall I love it. I just hope He mixes it up on the next album with a little bit of that shit, plus Some Stevie feeling shit, and some futuristic soul shit. I wish I could hook up with you guys, Im a writer and I have a great feel for music but I do not play insturments, Quest, Common or Anyone that gets on here and reads this, look me up for real, id love to see an email from one of yall if you get time, I can write you something an email it to yall if youd like, if not Ill keep feelin your shit. Thanks, Greg

i love d'angelo's shit. fuck what others say. lwfc, well, maybe if i wouldn't have read all the early critcs reviews and heavy anticipation, then it would have been better. and quest, just because the indudstry is flooded with a bunch of bullshit, then, i'm supposed to praise this, noooooo. there are some top choice cuts on there, nothing to write home about, except "a song for assata", but i could have swore that the beat sounded similar, i don't know, could be my "hating" that tricked my ears. ?

To butt in & slap ya in a face with what most of us feel about the Soulquarians. One: I never really cared for D'Angelo cause I thought he sounded like a young Prince wannabe; even though we need one since Prince hasn't been himself musically for mad years. So of course I'm not gonna like his second effort; but, I did like one song on each album. Yes, I do like the roots but as a whole not just certain members of the Roots! Two: Common is a rare & talented MC no matter whose beats he's rappin over; but, remember thats only half a song the music has to be the the backbone of any song. Three: Common with the sound of D'Angelo's music type stuff doesn't work with many that believe that the two could mix. I thought most of it was okay but could have been better; remember we are use to listening to Common with a real Hip Hop sound of sampled sounds. No, I'm not dissin' the fact that peeps play instruments but organic music is sometimes not the way to go with some rap artist.

Whatever happened to Questlove that use to expriment with comming with different sounds/techniques from his drum kit, will someone please let me know when he does come back to the rap game. I think when Hip Hop/Rap producers start treating Hip Hop as a second nature to any type of music instead of first, thats when they loose sight of what rap use to sound like (that child of music that made himself the individual & bastard of music that nows stands alone but still is made up of its parents). I could name at least a hundred albums that were soso cause the whole thing sounded like one big song instead of a group of compostions. Anyway to make a long story short (to some kats who might know more than I do)I think that Common's LWFC wasn't better than the last cause of repetative (R&B)production but not any worst than the last one either, just the same. Soulquarians is still a talented group/band since Reveloution or MFSB. Hey us listeners can give a rat's azz about what or why no-one can do a song now that was done back in the day, cause we just want good music not excuses for why you can't create classics (don't get madd just take ya azz back to the lab).

Remember this, it's either my way or hit the phunkin' internet highway.....dammit!

so you will only accept soul when it's given to you second hand? (broken down through a sampler).

again.

it's cool for a cat to loop funk inc.'s "kool is back" as long as it's parts sound like "come clean" in the first place?

hmmmmmm

but as a "root" "soulquarian" (or whatever) when have you known me not to do some melodic shit?

hey, i despise modern rnb like the next cat. but in my eyes d'angelo is not modern rnb. he is not montell jordan. he is not k-ci or jo jo, he is not case. he can only be him. and at the rate no one is even attempting to become a vanguard in this dead genre i feel he deserves a chance in the eyes of heads.

but again, who am i talking to?

real heads? or mofo's who thought they had what being a "head" was all about.

just because their is a j5 record in your collection and the "lesson pt 6." is a great exersise in experimentation to you dosn't make you "a head".

real hip hop.

i follow what bam and flash taught me.

they told me in 1980 they could play this in a set:

-"sugar sugar"
-"get it together"
-"give it up or turn it a loose"
-"it's just begun"
-"mary mary"
-"start me up"
-"get off your ass and jam"
-"sing a simple song"
-"cars"
-"theme to fat albert" (meters version)

that to me is "hip-hop". when cats experimented.

rnb?

if you can compare our shit to "bills" or "westside til i die" or whatever is sittin ontop of billboard then you can cry foul.

as far as getting hit with "the truth". money, i never felt so good about an album in my life. to the contrary. you are getting hit with the truth.

funny thing is a majority of this record was made with a "1200" and a "3000" and a "900".

forgive me for using these tech terms but i assume that you complaining cats are musicians/producers. so i assume you know "the basics".

and since i strayed away from experimentation (what ever that is......all of a sudden i just turned into swiss or something?) show me how to come back to the path. like name songs or production techniques. don't bitch. explain please.

looka here partna. look when i posted them jawns. look when you posted your jawn. my shit was up before yours so why are you taking this all personal? like i was talking to you. if you read my post i said to each his own. but don't think that imma just sit here and not defend my work. there is a lot of good shit that dosn't tickle my fancy

bruce spring..
most greek literature
rice cakes
the thought of letting a record store pass me by unscathed. i can name millions of good things that don't appeal to me.

but i can respect some shit. sheeeeit gimme a black tail over newsweek any day.

okay that went far. but when there is something i don't like in music (prime example: hated playing stravinski's "rites of spring" in college) i can either dismiss it. shrug it off. or investigate. i chose the latter. sure enough i found out that money was the bomb squad of his day. niggas hated his ass. when he debuted that peice they has a riot in the theater (not saying violence appeals to me.....but because he phrased his chords and voiceings different, they rebelled.)

im not comparing myself to him, just saying that i took the time out to do the knowledge on a cat who before class i had 0 interest in.

now if you think that lwfc is bad. as in horrible. as in the musicians can't play, as in com can't rhyme. then that's a whole nother thread.

but i can assume that this isn't the case. (it took me 4 years to accept J BEEZ WITH THE REMEDY) look i'm cool with y'all not diggin it. but i think that y'all at least owe me a reason why you don't dig it. and i don't accept "it sounds like the roots" or "the same" or whatever.

i play instruments, i don't make them. and all of a sudden imma catch a bad one cause a handful of albums have the same instruments?

think about it. 99% of radio is all repetitive yet some are ready to say "i've heard this before". primo uses the same "funky president" snare since "superstar" and yet and still "this sounds like a roots album"....."i used to love h.e.r." has crack snares, rhodes, and bass. "ressurection" same thing (piano instead of rhodes.) but yet and still "this sonds like...."

and yes kev, if com's non basketball playing ass can breakdown to lil old me why vince cater can be a hero in about 4 seasons, then i expect you to back up what you speak. it's like a cop not having a reason for pulling me over. and if you don't know "tech terms" (for the future, not being smart either) don't go around life blind on some chris rock ish ("i don't know that shit!!!")
you don't have to be a musician to express a like or a disdain.

now, let's broach greek literature. all of yall probably read the odyssey at some point. most of yall probably thought it was pretty effin boring. so did i. i appreciated it but it didn't "tickle my fancy" as mr. love put it. now, i'm in the middle of reading joyce's ulysses. I dunno about you, but as a musician and fine music appreciator, I always want to hear about the technical side of things. I wanna know who played what where, what the history -- technical and otherwise -- of the instrumentation is, why they decided to go with a particular sound over another.

Not only are you ignorant, but you revel in being that way.

WHY HAVEN'T YOU LEARNED ANYTHING!? (C) DEAD PREZ

Maybe if you (close-minded, myopic) were a little more objective (head out ass), instead of coming out of your mouth all willy nilly, you could learn something (expansion). Instead, you base your argument (pointless) upon the foundation of jealousy and insecurity (hater). In a court of law your case would be dismissed (ignored)!

Mad, cause someone's trying to teach you (spectator) something? Quest didn't come like Dr. Knowitall, he's telling you (listener) why his (artist) shit is the Phat way it is. He's telling YOU (spectator, playa hata) why HE (the originator) made his/their (Soulquarians) music the way they did.

Yet, you just wanna argue with someone about how they need to make THEIR (possesive noun) shit sound?

>>>it's not about sampling vs. playing
>it's about getting bored with an album.
>all of you are talented. that's why i am so upset.

You're upset because you are jealous. I have finally figured it out! You are a genuine, certified, bona fide, PLAYA HATA! It's alright though, we have all hated and been hated on at some point in our lives. The difference between some and others, is realizing that jealousy and undercutting in order to uplift and make yourself look better (in a public/private forum) pointing at what others are doing and crying wack, wack wack is wack! All the time.

>you look up to some of the greatest musicians >and singers ever, but your recent work >>>(lwfc+voodoo) isn't close to being as great as a >prince or curtis mayfeild or joni mitchel album.

Lwfc = rapper prince, curtis, joni = singers
voodoo= singer w/2albums prince, curtis, joni= singers w/ a catalog of 10 albums a piece

Where's the logic?

>your music is funky but it ain't taking us no >where.

It brings you here everyday my son, every day I see a Soulquarian hater post from you.

>every roots album was a break through album. now >your argument why your fans are starting to turn >away is because we don't understand the music >buisness?we hate because we hate the fact that >you play live instruments?

"We". Who's we?

get real. that's the reason why we fell in love with the roots. that's reason why lauryn and clef and mos and common started performing with bands.

The reason so many artist's are bringing live bands back to the forefront is the backlash to "manufactured" bubblicious r&B and rap that was marketed last century. Everything must change.

>i'm a idiot because lwfc didn't move me?

No, that's your opinion.

>i need to suck your dick because voodoo was >repetitive and boring?

No, you should suck it cause you keep riding it.

>i'm just saying this because i need attention?
Yes.

>fuck yall!

Thank you everyone could use a good fuck every once in a while, you should look into it.

I gotta stop now cause I told myself I wouldn't do this.

I feel that a lot of the peeps have gotten the wrong idea from ?uest's post, but I understand what he's saying.

First of all, hip-hop is based on four elements, one of which is the art of deejaying. This whole art form is based on taking other people's shit and making it your own, making it even phatter than the original piece. And, if you recall, the first huge success hip-hop ever had was the Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight," which straight jacked the bassline from Chic's "Good Times."

My question is, why hate on Jay Dee for doing what he does? First of all, when homeboy samples, he's fulfilling hip-hop's most important aspect: creativity. If anyone of us could create HALF as good a piece of music (read: genius) as he does with bits and pieces of old albums, we wouldn't be wasting our time talking shit about a brother doing his thing.

This says nothing of his and the other Soulquarians' ability. I mean, LISTEN for God's sake! The modern sense of what music / hip-hop is has dulled a lot of our senses to true artistry. When I listen to the music they create, I hear and feel every intricate drum pattern, keyboard manipulation, guitar chord, etc. It takes much talent to get busy the way these brothers do, and to simply write them off as being "dull and repetitive" is ignorance, plain and simple.

Keep up the tightness, Soulquarians.

Damn ?uest....you are speaking truth. Especially when you said..."all of cash money is keyboards yet i hear no bitching. so cats on that hating shit can suck my dick."
I bet alot of people didn't even know that about CMB. Instead of hating on certain groups that are in the "mainstream" listen to the music.
Is it originality that we are looking for or "realness"? Not saying I'm a fan of CMB, but I respect that much about them.
Why would anyone hate on the soulquarians? But then again, alot of people used to hate on artist that were before their time.

The brutal truth is that the bulk of white people in America never had any interest in educating black people, except as this could serve white purposes. It is not the black child's language that is in question, it is not his language that is despised: It is his experience. A child cannot be taught by anyone who despises him, and a child cannot afford to be fooled. A child cannot be taught by anyone whose demand, essentially, is that the child repudiate his experience, and all that gives him sustenance, and enter a limbo in which he will no longer be black, and in which he knows that he can never become white. Black people have lost too black children that way. (James Baldwin)

Hmm...I missed that. I gotta say, Quest's argument here gets weak, because it's not the choice of instrument, it's the style of composition. Piano can be in two different compositions and the result can range from pleasing to the ear to annoying as fuck, depending on how the sounds are arranged. I say that to point out that clearly CMR's use of keyboards is different from the Soulquarians. That should be patently obvious to anyone who casually listens to the two camps.

Similarly, a casual listen to the production on "resurrection" and "like water..." will rveeal differences even to the untrained ear...depending on your musical tastes, I think you will naturally favor one or the other.

All that said, I like "Like Water...". The main beef I can see in what people don't like is the sonic difference b/t LWFC and "resurrection", b/c I know people who had some gripes with "one day..." (b/c they were expecting "resurrection pt II"). it's obvious com will keep moving, with every album changing in style/vibe...

Quest,
You said it just like it is, cats are to used to being spoon fed the same old shit and complain about it at the same time. Yet when something new comes along, they ain't having it cause they gotta actually use that mass of cells in their head. What the Okayartists/Soulquarians are doing makes people think and in this day in time thinking for yourself is damn tough for lot's of people. The music needs to evolve, we can't live in the good old days of the late 80's and early 90's forever. So i congradulate you on furthering the music to a new level, even if the masses can't feel you yet!

>man.

for starters. next to ali shaheed, jay has the crispiest drums ever.

musicians and producers alike can't stand it when they hear his drums (pimp, interlude before "funky4you", thelonius snare.......sheeeeit i wish i had a snare that tight)

he has a musicians feel. the funniest shit to all of us is the fact that y'all cry roots album, but the only songs with instruments are "coldblood" "time" "geto" "assata" and "pops". i don't know one producer in hiphop that programs shit so pristine that you swear it's the roots.

on the album?:
peep "the light". for starters, the hook.
the hook is scratched.
and not scatching a hook either.
the hook is comprised of the lyrics of bobby caldwell's "open your eyes" as in.....

"there are times"
then later in the song
"when you need someone"
somewhere in second verse
"i will be by yourside"
an adlib at the fade out
"oh darling"
first verse
"there is a light that shines"
"special for you"
"and meeeeeee...."

im crazy, but not that crazy. now if all those words were together, then whatever. anyone can do that. but not only did jay put the puzzle pieces together but on top of that (luck ha ha) the piano in the backround happens to be in the same key.

that to me is one of the most amazing shits since pharcyde's j-swift forced "rockin funky watergate" (a song in a whooooooooole nother key-) to fit in with the music on "for better or for worse" (a dream in a whole nother key) (that creepy guitar when fatlip goes "ahhhh yes yes yes you trusted meeeeee")

anyway not to mention manipulating bobby's voice in the verse to sound like that of a keyboard. (listen to the fade out) that alone is some innovative ass shit. and to make matters worse he has no training!!!!!

need i go on?

the samba interlude after pimp

made up of 5 parts all separated on an album.

"dooinit"

didn't i give the rick james lecture before? in case you missed, when was the last time "give it to me" sounded so good in hip-hop? (salt and pepa?) this is rick james chopped the eff up dukes!!!!!!

if you need more explaining go to the lesson i'm sure some cats will school you.

as far as 88 is concerned. 88 paterns his whole life after jay. (don't we all?) just because money used brushes and a beastie boys sample (mos's record) makes it dope in your eyes? trust me. i can call 88 right now and he will play me jay's answering machine outgoing message beats.......

.....all 40 of em.

"breathe and stop" never kept an ass still as long as i've known and he still found time to keep "NT" fresher than ever

"wordplay" the kick drum is drunk as fuck!!!!!!! i love that shit to death

"let's start" pull out the love movement relics this was his "doinit" of 98. this was taken from "sweet georgia brown" (harlem globetrotters)
i heard the original. could even begin to see where he found the open horns.

"little brother"
(black star) roy ayers is talkin and singin all over this. the trick to being jay d is finding open space to sample. here he took 5 pieces and made it one.

"find a way" again towa tei has 3 half second breakdowns, of which jay made em into whole songs. not to mention the song is in japanese.

sure it's all relative. some cats want flash and fire for proof that something is amazing (man that echo on "aquemini" was deep!!! you know how many times i heard that?)

again, shit don't have to have the impact of a car crash to exicte right?

....right?

Yo, when I read this, my mouth just dropped. Are you tryin to tell me... that... that hook is effing scratched??? From different lines in the song?? I went back immediately and listened to it. The hook is scratched y'all. No, no. I don't think you understand what I'm saying. Listen to The Light, right now. Listen to it. THE HOOK IS SCRATCHED. I'm about the last person to jock the Soulquarians, but that's some amazing ish right there. And it was already my favorite song on the album before...

Dag.

u think 88 Keys is "amazing" and Jay is boring? Why is it that 88 has sweated Jay sooo hard since hearing his shit that he calls him and asks him if he can have a beat that Jay did for Esvee!? (WHAT?!) And that 88 even went out after hearing a JayDee beat off his voicemail, got equipment, taped that shit, looped it, and was playing it for cats!? Not to mention, 88's blatant jacking of Pete Rock's "Wunderlust" for a Truth Enola beat! Do your homework...

First he reviews commons full CD BEFORE ?uest.Skits and all (nobody had the skits)

In the same review he also 'heard' beats for Black Thought and other new joints.

If he was'nt, Jay Dee would kill him for giving away so much info.

He only replies to Slum/Jay Dee/Soulquarians/production posts.

this is all quite disturbin.....yall will make statements like...

"i dont like the soulquarians",
"LWFC is boring",
"Voodoo is repetitive",
"LWFC sounds like the Roots"....and those that makes these statements, EACH AND EVERY SINGLE EFFIN time, anyone, from quest to any other player challenges your statement, people do the "ad homenim" (makin your opinion what is right and wrong.....if i think it, it must be true) that shit is wack, and is called informal logic, and goes no where in a debate

....its like saying, well i dont support the death penalty cause i feel its mean....LIKE WTF...come to the hole with your best shit, or expect to be the cat in the poster that got dunked on........

i dunno, it seems like yall are pickin at straws, understand that the Soulquarians are replayin breaks, and doin loops, durin a time, when that shit is not possible due to samplin laws.(see above)...ahmir told me this after a Roots show, when i asked him about his cynicsm at the end of "TRCA" "due to the asanine wall street esque samplin laws.....)....that shit boggled my mind....and make me mad effin sad.....yall wonder why hip-hop is dead...hmm...like Ego Trip said, "cant kill somethin thats already dead"
but where do we go from here?!....give up.....sorry yall, im a taurus, but even i find myself wantin to give up on this shit and listen to the classics........but....when you hear an album like "LWFC" it gives you that feelin that there may be a whisper in a loud ass genre....and we wanna amplify that whisper...well at least i do......

so where do we go....."EW WHERE IS NO ID...BLAH BLAH BLAH" i love noid and dug inf more than anyone, i was listenin to "res..." the other day, and you simply cant make a song like "chapter 13..." nowadays...so do you give up, or go back pick up instruments, and do that shit for yourself?

....dont yall find it mad effin interesting that ali sha, jay, tip, pete rock, etc are learnin how to play instruments, even primo on each new track, addin a new instrument,

on J-Live's "best part" the flute

on "mathematics", the nasty guitar

on "sixth sense", the flute and bass combined...

....trailblazers dont complain, they take what they have and make classic shit. So why is when the soulqarians do the same shit...it becomes...."not hiphop"....if yall have a personal difference with the album, dont go makin general statements about what very very little is left with hip-hop music!

First of all I'm new to the family so I'll say hotep...

Second I read along trying to figure out what anyone's objections to this entity known as the soulquarians is all about

Third I challenge anyone to name me a group of individuals out there throwing down the gauntlet like the soulquarians...love em or hate em they are forcing players and specthaters to take notice...every artist on radio with very few exceptions are conforming to what is "known" to sell...until what sells becomes different...throuhout this forum many issues are raised...1.)Some cat talks about real hip-hop not being regarded as second but then cite samples...how should I say stupid is that...a sample is second generation at best...by the way I love samples and live/original compositions 2.)This whole idea about "boring" and "repetitive" is an example of what people call the MTV effect...everything has to be quick and satisfying, but I like my music like I like my sex, long and in a groove...know there is a famous Marvin Gaye album, I forget the name now that I heard that is one big groove, similiar arrangements, but a collective of individual pieces. Roots, D'ANgelo, Common, other assoc. artists provide muical meditation and because you cats can't sit still long enough to break it down and fall in to a musical/spiritual trance you are losing...4.)coolquest's point...Prince...cat's thought he was gay and didn't like his screaming when he came out...Tone,Toni,Tony peeps had a hard time accepting them when they dropped each album...classic RNB...there are more examples...point...good ish seems to travel ahead of it's time...or like someone once said it's right on time and we need to catch up...

this for quest...a lot of the people in this forum are ignoring the most important issue when it regards this music and what spirit or energy is summoned to make it...don't let those people who are less evolved get you upset...and I am not trying to dis anyone "less evolved" I respect your opinion but it's like somebody riding a pony trying to tell a cowboy how to ride a horse...

you can give two cats a gun...one uses it to protect his family...the other uses it to terrorize those without weapons...the tool is the same the energy and the outcome different

I almost think that people have gotten too used to the wack shit that has been coming out lately, that they've been brainwashed... and when they get approached w/ some horns and some xylophones, they don't know how to react. It's as thought somebody let out the cat, and they aint even trying to find it, they'd rather just BITCH..

like I alluded to in another post, I think that the simplistic ways of LWFC (simplistic in terms of, not trying to shine over Common; i know there are a lot of technicalities that go on in the background, that I'm not even finitely aware of.) are done on purpose to help Common shine lyrically. I know peeps are listening for the beats most of the time (I know I always am... on the real), but this album really made me change a little bit of that.. in terms of listening for lyrics a little more and paying more attention... ).. If we start listening to JUST beats, we get ignorant yo (perhaps, I'm ignorant because of my love for beats... and strictly that, but half the battle of knowledge is realizing you need to learn and open your mind... some cats here aren't willing to do that...)..

>but where do we go from
>here?!....give up.....sorry yall, im a
>taurus, but even i find
>myself wantin to give up
>on this shit and listen
>to the classics........but....when you hear
>an album like "LWFC" it
>gives you that feelin that
>there may be a whisper
>in a loud ass genre....and
>we wanna amplify that whisper...well
>at least i do......

I hope we aint talking the Q-Tip-type "Amplified"..

>so where do we go....."EW WHERE
>IS NO ID...BLAH BLAH BLAH"
>i love noid and dug
>inf more than anyone, i
>was listenin to "res..." the
>other day, and you simply
>cant make a song like
>"chapter 13..." nowadays...so do you
>give up, or go back
>pick up instruments, and do
>that shit for yourself?

Man, dilemma galore. I remember I told my dad once, that I was pissed that they never taught me how to play an instrument.. no matter what the hell it was.. a piano, a cello, a flute, a damn comb w/ some tissue over it... (ok ok, i'm stretching it now..).. It's so much harder when you DO the ish, that, that's why I've learned to be humble.. cuz I can't do a lot of things, so i really can't speak on em.. (criticize, mind you)..

>....dont yall find it mad effin
>interesting that ali sha, jay,
>tip, pete rock, etc are
>learnin how to play instruments,
>even primo on each new
>track, addin a new instrument,

And even the other artists... the Black Eyed Peas, messing around w/ that Native "flute".. that ish is dope..

>on J-Live's "best part" the flute

J-Live. Classic.

>on "mathematics", the nasty guitar

damn, i can't listen to that now..

>on "sixth sense", the flute and
>bass combined...

I love it... that's why I love beats and have been ignorant to lyrics. Cuz of nicely laced tracks like this one.

>....trailblazers dont complain, they take what
>they have and make classic
>shit. So why is
>when the soulqarians do the
>same shit...it becomes...."not hiphop"....if yall
>have a personal difference with
>the album, dont go makin
>general statements about what very
>very little is left with
>hip-hop music!

A good trick I use when listening to stupid people is, not everybody in the world has mastered
a) the art of being humble
b) the art of thinking
c) the art of making coherent points / discussions..

So w/ those people, you just ignore. It's no point wasting your time.

all these hiphop heads or immitation heads are really starting to kill me. hip hop has 4 elements , breakin, scratchin, mc in, taggin, and the newest element hatin.this is the fifth element. look at common, here is one of the hardest mcs to ever breath air. he could of took a willie don, f a b***h, gun clappin, easy way out and made millions with the skill he has.instead he stayed real to hip hop, and what do some of u do, attempt to diss him. his beats are wack, he use to love her, now what has he done to her, he sounds like the roots. all u haters, probably never loved her, like puffys beats, and rap like nas. del said it best when he said too many fans not enough artist. all of u 5th element representers, i got an idea, why dont u do it better, until then go buy a puffy cd and get jiggy. cause u have no idea what the way of life is about.

so take your ball and go home the sun is going down!

hey quest i see that you are really getting upset with these so called HEADS! but, the way that i see it, what is the percentage of people that enjoy your music compared to the ones that don't? i'm sure it's like 1%. you have nothing to prove to these haters, just worry about the people that come to your live shows and support all the projects that you and your crew put out. most of them are probablly those true diehard backpackers that don't like anything unless it's on rawkus.

and just out of curiousity, i was wondering what the average age of some of these okayplayers are. just so i can get a sense of what generation they come from.

don't worry quest, just keep doing what your doing. maybe with age they will understand what you guys are trying to accomplish. peace

I wish this whole pro vs. anti LWFC Soulquarian backed lp shit would end. I myself am anti LWFC meaning that I just didn't feel it - point blank. This will put an end to all the debate and help back up my view. Just envision a typical battle where Ghostface Killah did his smoothest song (jus cuz his album dropped this year also) against the hardest Common song (to cancel out some discrepencies between the 2 styles) from his new lp. I mean come on people! Who would obviously take this? Didn't Rakim explain to us that the meaning of mc really means move the crowd? To that respect then, who would have won? Okay fuck it - so let's say they both did they whole albums! Who'd win? Yeah I thought so. This whole rap game is really about whose most bangin - and Com's new ish just doesn't reflect that to any higher degree. That's what all the anti LWFC heads including me are really cryin about!! Aint criticism a muthafucka Okayplayer?? Go back to the lab and make some real hip hop shit before you let Com get further crushed by mc's who still bring it on rough, rugged and raw - you suckas!!!!!!!

Where is this great book on what hip hop is . . .somewhere near the "Rakim DickRider Club"? African music is hip hop. That's it. Is there some formula? People who love LWFC LOVE Ghosteface's album. People are giving you an opinion on why things evolve and are considered hip hop and you're denying it cause the "God" didn't tell you so . . . of which if you think HIS last album was classic you're a fool.

Different strokes . . . but African music evolves as do African people (supposedly). Where you at?

I just want to comment on the fact that I see alot of post stating something to the effect of, "you can't sample anymore, so this is the best you get." I even sensed that from ?uest, explaining the sampling laws and what not.

In my opinion, they're sound is the hottest shit out, period. If producers could still loop shit and slap a break behind it, Soulquarian shit would still be the hottest shit out, period.

You know why? They're making shit that 10 years from now producers will be paying out the ass to sample again. People will be replaying shit that they are making. That's called innovation.

If you don't like the way it sounds, don't tag it R & B just because it's smooth. It's still hip-hop. Singing=R&B???

Repetitive? Some of the best albums of all-time have this same so-called repetitiveness.
Atliens, sounds like he whole shit was recorded on fucking Mars. Illmatic had the same vibe to the entire thing. The first round of Wu-Releases? Same thing.

I'm just interested in what you all want from music. Just what do you all want? I mean if you don't like it, whatever, but don't come on here saying it's NOT whatever. Who the hell are you to say whether the shit is or isn't? Do you represent the majority? Do you represent anything?

>I'm just interested in what you
>all want from music.
>Just what do you all

the haters (i USE THAT TERM LIGHTLY we all haters just on different sides) do have a point..
but repetion is a formidable power in music..
a good formula is needed..
swiss' formula is simple beat make money
soulquarians formula is make good solid music they can sleep w/ at night..
i mean..i am an avid music listener..i have shit from the most commercial to obscure..i like that bullshit on the radio sometimes..i just dont oversaturate myself..

comparitively com and deangelos album to me are similar..but the similarity is something i like..kinda like fried fish and baked fish both taste good to me..so what if i dont make sense..

i like the way the shit sounds..u know..its soulful..swiss is some get drunk get crunk ish..
com is some get drunk and meditate..

as far as comparing it to mos on the same level..impossible..the production is on the same tip but not from the same finger tips..
they are part of the same movement but different forces..

damn..maybe i should have read the whole post..
but basicaly... the soulquarians have a unique sound..VERY ORIGINAL..

thank u for respondin and clarifying quest..
my post was out of love and confusion..

every man is entitled to their own opinion..
thats what makes us human..
my opinion is..coms album is hot, dope, freshtastic, gorgerific all that shit..
soulquarians are innovative and deserve as much media praise as casio keyboard composers..and with the praise comes the hate..just understand that..

trust me...yall dont want me to post..

I'm never a hater, only a person who knows what's good, what's terrible, & what needs room for improvement. The Soulquarians are still a great improvement on music for this day & age where commercialism rules. Anyway, I'm not dissing them read my first responce all the way to the end people (you too "That Vixed Drummer"). Maybe we should all just stop givin the truth to artist that need to hear it when something is not quite up to par. Maybe we should just lie to them & tell them everything they do is phat, its butter, its Blazin with 5 Mic statis; & just kiss thier azzes everytime! Then laugh when they really do become wack & fall off, while wondering why did they do that.

Like Eryka Badu said "remember I'm an artist & I'm senitive about my shit"; my responce to that is "well phuck ya then, don't do it if ya only expectin 100% good reactions". Peeps say I'm mean but hey I got reason why (but I wont type it here today). I'm gonna say it one more time, the truth hurts.....POW...SLAP !

"I agree 100%.. you gotta know what you're speaking of and just saying "i don't like it" isn't really a qualifier."

I'll have to disagree with this a little...Most things I can pinpoint what I don't like, but the first time I heard LWFC a few weeks ago (yeah, I got it on MP3, but I bought it on Tuesday like everyone else), I was just kinda like "Well, the beats are alright, a little bland, I guess." This seems to be a lot of the "haters'" opinions right now.

The thing is though, is that about a week before the release, I listened to it more and more, and I began to LOVE it, and having the actual CD to listen to in my headphones has made me love it even more. All I have to say is, is that if you think the beats are kind of bland, then just keep on listening, and I think that in a few weeks you will love this as much as I do. I can't remember the last time I heard and album this good.

I really have a hard time finding much to "techinically" critize what these boys are doing...i haven't read everypost, but I KNOW quest dropped some knowledge.....if you don't "feel" it..fine..but you can't knock the production and mastery behind these projects..the classic.."who else right now is doing it?"

BUT...What I do know is that NOT your average hip-hop fan is taking a liking to D's stuff, Common's new shit..and the Roots..and deep down you haters can't stand that...why else did you come to these boards..buy the albums...support this music.?!?!?!..so that the artist could remain "underground" for life...not be able to help out family or their own?...

and y'all come with weak responses too..
that's wack..'cause d takes his shit off and sells 1 million..y'all want to hate...ohhhh...mos def didn't do that...so he's better?...I love me some mos..his album was tight..but was anything "new"..innovative..as far as production went?...nah...he sang..ohh..so does outkast, goodie mob..etc..lyrics..that's another thread..but your attack the tracks..and that's quests cup of tea...

Y'all need some better supported opinions to change my mind about the soulquarians..(specially hometown hero...Jay D)..and I don't think that will come very soon..

I notice that when a group one person likes is dissed, they dis someone else's favorite group to defend their folks. STOP IT. We're all, I assume, trying to hear (and some of us *make*) good music. So, if someone disses your people, defned them, but don't feel the need to "cross dis" b/c clowning someone else doesn't make your favorite act look fresher...

Peep the following...

>do that...so he's better?...I love
>me some mos..his album was

>as production went?

Yes. I thought the production on Mos' album was very fresh. I like the arrangement on "Umi Says", "Know That", "mathematics" and so on. Don't feel the need to attack Mos Def's production to defend D'Angelo's production. Both men turned in excellent albums.

ps: Mos Def also gets little credit for the fact that he played a lot of the instruments heard on his LP. peep the credits...money is a multi-instrumentalist and he's nice with his. Respect due.

64. "To the cats that feel Soulquarians are....."
In response to Reply # 0

To the cats that feel Soulquarians are boring and non-innovative:

Most artists mark their music. When you here an Ali Shaheed Mohammed beat, you can tell it is hear. When you hear Stevie Wonder productions, you can tell that it was produced by Stevie Wonder. When you hear a song produced by Prince (even when it is sung by a different artist) you can tell that the song is produced by Prince.

This is the way way I feel about the Soulquarians productions. They have marked their music. This will make them known as ORIGINAL......

As one okayplayer would say..... I forget his name.... "Hey boys and girls.... the word for the day is ORIGINAL".

Let's also remember, hip-hop is an art, just like painting is an art. People see different things in art, just like hip-hop.

For example, me personally, I did not feel 2Pac because I don't get a feeling from his music.

But I can feel Soulquarians and Ali Shaheed because they're music reminds me of when I was a kid and my family and I would take long road trips to my grandmother's, and my parents would play the old school stuff in the car. When I hear Soulquarians and Ali Shaheed's music, it just takes me back to those times and relaxes me.

That is how an art fan looks at things. It is how it makes them feel when they hear or see it. So for you to say that it is boring and non-innovative, I have to ask the question, "Compared to what?"

So my question is, what do you listen to that is straight innovative and is not repetitive?

Peace!!!!!!

Mofo's just aint satisfied! What more could ya'll want? Damn, if you go against the grain and do some other ish - "It doesn't sound like the last album"
You go with the same style as your first 2 albums on your third album and cats say - "It sounds like the last album." see D'Angelo and Common.

Damn a lotta cats are actin like babies. I don't think LWFC is a classic (yet) but it's better than damn near everything presently being put out.

I wonder what ya'll haters will say will Black Thought's album drops? "It doesn't sound like a Roots joint"!!?? Puuuleeeze

I've read all of the responses and the comments (not an easy task, timewise) and have marinated a little bit on things.

I think the big reason for some of the adverse reactions to the Soulquarians is summed up best by something that Pinoynj/Omar wrote:

"I just can't digest what you (?uestlove/Soulquarians) feeding me this time."

The people that pick up "Voodoo" and "LWFC" are all at different stages in their understandings of music, life, etc.

Just like a newborn, some folk have to have things in a simpler form to get the most out of them at the time.

Think of the best damn meal your mom has ever made.

Now that meal may have been the dopest thing ever concocted in a kitchen, but would you ever try to feed that to a newborn? Hell no!

But just 'cause that newborn really isn't ready to get it's mouth on that dish, does it mean that that meal is any less dope? Hell no!

Just because you either don't, can't, or aren't capable of feeling Voodoo or LWFC (at this time) doesn't mean that either LP is wack, not innovative, or whatever labels you're trying to tag on it.

Maybe it'll take a week, a month, or a lifetime to completely feel them, but in no way does that erase the merit of each effort by the Soulquarians.

Another thing that seems to be popping up frequently is that the LPs are "repetitive."

Just like ?uestlove (summary--repetitive in comparison to what?) and donwill (summary--it's the carving of a signature sound) mentioned, there's a reason that the albums and their songs within each album sound, for lack of a better word, similar.

Using LWFC for an example--

Comparing LWFC to the majority of Hip Hop releases currently out is like comparing the 3 hours of Kubrick's "2001" to 3 hours of episodes of "The Simpsons." (I love both 2001 and The Simpsons)

Most Hip Hop albums today have an emcee spitting over a smattering of different producer's works. There's nothing wrong with it, in fact, it enables "heads" from all persuasions to get a load of what that emcee is about. For the most part though, in my opinion, there really isn't communication going on between the different producers on what direction the emcee is trying to take or what the emcee's vision (correct me if I'm wrong AND if you can cite specific examples). Most people working on projects have a preoccupation with getting something out that's "hot."

That's where Com came different with LWFC. He had something specific he wanted to do with LWFC and enlisted the help of those he felt could best achieve that. From what I've read, it seems that the project was decently tight knit from the outset and followed through all the way.

The 2001/Homer Analogy?

It's cool to see the Simpsons banter and carry on through various wacky exploits within 30 minutes and see them get funky in another 30 minutes within situations set down by different sets of writers. But seeing all 3 hours of "2001," a movement in and of itself, is something that, in my eyes, is more about experiencing something in its wholeness and not just spectating fragments.

So what people seem to be labeling as "boring" or "repetitive," is really just a work that is nearly defined by its cohesiveness, something that, as of late, doesn't come along very often in the music world, much less the Hip Hop Nation.

My last point (if these can be called points) concerns the Rakim definition of MCing which someone brought up. It's one of my favorite definitions, in fact, and the idea is that someone is on a stage transfusing their essence through the mic and out the speakers to the crowd and having that crowd respond with a certain degree of connection to the energy and craziness of the show. If you've ever experienced that than you've witnessed a true emcee.

But what about after the jam, when the ringing of your ears finally fades and you have to get back to the grind of the life that you live on the daily. You still moving?

To me, that's where Com and the Soulquarians come in...having a lasting impact on whoever will give their ish a listen. To move the crowd beyond the circumstances of the moment and into the realization that for some people this music is life--that to me is truly the Next Movement.

Peace,

Hi, I'm a long-time listener, first-time caller. I felt compelled to jump into this discussion, because I was disappointed by the level of discourse, especially from ?uest, who seems to be taking things a bit too personally.

The initial criticism of Common's album was kinda weak, and could have easily been attacked on it's own merits, but instead people have been falling over themselves to take personal potshots at the critics. A person should be able to criticize an album without having his tastes attacked (Just because I don't like Common's album means I must be a Puffy or Cash Money fan? That's ridiculous.), his musical knowledge impugned, or his motives questioned.

I'll admit that I'm not really feeling Common's album. I don't have any creditials as a musician, I've never studied any instrument, and I barely passed my "Elements of Music" class back in college. But I have been a serious hip hop fan for 20 years, I'm a grown man, and I learned long ago that it's okay for me to not like something. I can't break down the technical reasons for not liking Common's album. I do know that it failed my "train test." I put my headphones on and listened to the album on the way to and from work for a few days. Every time I listened to Common's album, I generally found myself not paying attention to it, and I continually had to force myself to listen. I'm not saying it's bad, it just didn't hold my attention. That could be acceptable at work or at home, since other things are distracting me. But on the train, there's nothing else to vie for my attention, yet LWFC still didn't keep it. The new Ghostface album does; Dead Prez does; Blackalicious does. LWFC doesn't.

Now, I'm sure that it must be frustrating for a musician to read such a vague criticism, but the average fan doesn't have the musical vocabulary to say much more. Sorry. But just because I don't have the vocabulary doesn't mean I can't hear what's going on. And if one has to have the proper musical understanding to appreciate the album, then you might want to look at yourself. The average fan didn't need a musical education to appreciate James Brown, EW&F, George Clinton, Marvin Gaye, the Bomb Squad, RZA, or Premier. Why do they need it to appreciate you?

It's easy to say that your music is so much better than most everything else that's out right now. That's completely true. But if you claim to be in the lineage of JB, Prince, EWF, etc., then you have to compare your output to theirs. That's who I'm comparing you to. I listen to music for a bunch of different eras, not just stuff that was released last week. I don't say "man, this Common album is much better than that Ruff Ryders album that I never bothered to buy;" I say "this groove on this Common song is cool, but it doesn't come close to anything on this James Brown CD that I'm also carrying around with me. I think I'll listen to some JB instead." I believe that you guys do belong firmly in that lineage, but while the icons were great at it, you're "pretty good." (please don't take that as a dis; it's not meant in that spirit).

I acknowledge that there's not gonna be another band as talented as James Brown's band; there's not gonna be another singer as great as Marvin Gaye; there's not gonna be another producer as great as the Bomb Squad. But topping their legacy is what you should be aiming for, not just being better than the flavor of the week.

As for the "worshipping" of innovation that seems to go on around here, I'd like to say I support innovation, but innovation is just a means, not the end itself. The end is good music. Innovative or not, that's what I want to hear. I can appreciate experimenting, but that doesn't mean I have to like each experiment.

As I said, I wasn't really feeling the album. But that doesn't mean I won't buy the next one. I certainly will, because I think you brothers are very talented. I've been a fan of Common's since Resurrection, and I still consider myself a fan, even if I wasn't impressed by this effort (there are plenty of Prince records I don't like, yet I'm a huge fan of him). So I'm not feeling this one. Maybe next time you'll work the kinks out to my liking. If not, then the time after that. I'm a fan of the Roots, and I'm sure I'll continue to be. I wasn't a D'Angelo fan, but this lastest album converted me. Keep up the good work, and please try to accept this criticism in the spirit it was given.

David

Please post more. You express yourself very well.

And I agree with the following, if you take out ghostface (which i haven't heard yet):

>still didn't keep it. The
>new Ghostface album does; Dead
>Prez does; Blackalicious does. LWFC

>it to appreciate you?

Word.

>out right now. That's completely
>true. But if you claim
>to be in the lineage
>of JB, Prince, EWF, etc.,

>your output to theirs.

Word again.

while I do enjoy "like water...", I await the next effort. I see the sound as evolving. respect to everyone involved. i hear the heart in it.

I would like to offer constructive criticism (yeah, yeah, ignore the song title post), so I have held back from a lot of the discussions on the album.

"a song for assata" and "geto heaven pt II" are my favorites. "funky for you" and "cold blooded" are runner ups. more to come...

folks with blackilicious and com's album, listen to "sleep" by blackilicious and "nag champa" by common. compare/contrast.

Spread love,

Ok, I haven't read through half of these posts and it got ugly, funny and downright yeaahhggkk!!

My opinion : If you are feeling this particular groove VOODOO, LWFC then you are there, it works its magic and sets you off for whatever reasons it does. If you ain't there then you ain't!
That doesn't make the music less that what it is. The music will be; that is the beauty of it. If you can't vibe with it then leave it be.

But this tearing each other up and down shyt is reedeekulous!! But its funny as hell to read! It's still a bunch of OPINIONS, no matter if you like it or hate it. (mine too)
It took me a friggin' month to get into VooDoo and now I can't turn the shyt off! The music was always there, its just now I am open and the vybes connect now. Same with LWFC, when I'm open, and the groove comes.

But for real tho, if someone else ain't where I'm feeling they ain't shytheads, diksukkas or idiots. They just ain't there. (and they can stay the fugg outta my way!) And that STILL don't have a damn thing to do with the music. It's already there. Period.

Thanks ?uest for givin' me something new to croon to. I'm strung out on VooDoo and I'm new to Common (he is some piece of work!) I can't get over the fact that I enjoy the "pimp" song! ME!?! CTFU!
