This question has been plaguing me.. I have not made it to a live performance of any of the OkayArtists, but does that mean that I am not loyal? I wanna get to one, but other obstacles stand in the way.. Alright, my question is---do you consider yourself a truly loyal fan? If so, state why........

Dag fire, leave it to you to make me display my true thoughts... Okay, to me loyalty is when you support your favorite artists or anyone for that matter, no matter what the case... You show an interest in them that cannot be totally defined in words..... Uh, I am running out of things to say... Um, you let them know when their songs inspire you, be it email, or letters.... Those kinda things.. This is my opinion and thoughts fire, remember that.
i can name maybe ten artist's that i would blindly spend my money on. everyone else has to be either recommended to me or i need to hear something that blows me away for them to keep me coming back.

i like what all the okayartists are doing right now and if they continue to do things i like, i will continue to spend my hard earned dollars in support of them. that is all any fan of any artist should do. ain't gonna be no mo' "loyalty" if i stop liking what i'm hearing. i did that shit with prince, and look what he's been doing to his "loyal" fans for the last 7 years; taking a BIG dump right in our faces.
Dag, so when they do not please you anymore, that is when you call the whole loyalty thing off? I would not categorize that as being loyal at all.. When your favorite artist does not do something that pleases you, the case maybe that they are trying to evolve into something that will please them. I must say that I don't think I would just cast my favorte artist out simply becuz they spit out a couple of disappointing records, that is when you should support them the most. My opinion.

i am not saying that someone should be abandoned because you weren't feeling a particular thing they've done. but are you saying that i should invest money in something i don't like just because i liked what the artist did before? and that this makes me a loyal fan? so, because you are a loyal fan, if the soultronics started making album after album of zydeco music, you would buy it; Not because you like zydeco, but because you are "loyal?" that just doesn't make sense.

You made it sound like you would not buy it simply becuz you did not like a couple of songs or what have you.. No I would not buy the album if I truly did not care for a couple of songs that were played on the radio, or whatever.. What I would do, is get on the internet, and try to listen to a couple more and see if they appeal to me, if they do not, then I will not buy that particular album. I was simply saying that when an artist is in a slump, that is when we should support them the most, not just buy the album even if we do not like it--but continue to support them otherwise..... Sorry for not being clear.

Awww.. Thanks, I totally agree, but sometimes I don't even wanna buy the CD's (too high unless I go to Best Buy)... If my pockets are full, that is when I go shopping for CD's, but when the lint is more so than the money, This chick will CDless......

don't consider myself loyal not only because I've never seen any of the okayartists live..I don't really owe them anything either, the exchange is made when I handed over my hard-earned for their output and appreciated it.
it's like the prince analogy, or wu tang..despite our history/shared time, I don't know them personally so if I personally can't comprehend/mess with what they're putting out I won't die trying..and that'd be truly loyal. _______________________________________________________

I've been to 4 Roots concerts, 1 Common concert (thanks, Frigidaire Krewcial), trying to get to the 14th july D concert (hella expensive).
I have all the Roots albums (even "from the ground up"), 2 D albums, 2 Com albums, SV's album, the Jazzy album.
I've been on this site since before it was actually open.

I was hooked on all these artist before they where hook up with each other, problem is besides The Roots (props!!!), none of the other okayartists (oh Jazzy's came to the Bamboo, sorry) come to the Toronto.

I don't think I would beat somebody down simply becuz they showed no love for my favorite artist or what have you.. It is that person's opinion, and what they think will never lessen the way I feel, so they may think what they please.. Yeah sure, I do argue and state my points when it comes to defending the music I listen to, but I will never, or shall I say---try my best not to be ignorant when someone says otherwise about the music I love and listen to.

I am currently in the progress of getting this lady at my job to listen to their (the Jazzyfatnastees) CD, but I am not going to let her hold it---I will dub some of the songs, and let her listen to it.... I don't trust too many people, and I am not lending out that particulcar CD......

I do not thinkthat going to live is necessary to be loyal. A lot of going to shows is a matter of geography & economics , me my self I live in Pittsburgh it is not exactly the place mad artists come thru like a NYC or LA. I've seen the Roots several times in Pittsburgh but i wouldn't call myself more loyal the cats that didn't go. At the same someone in NYC or Illadelf has the luxury of seeing OKAYartists several times month possibly. I wouldn't say they are more loyal than the cat who lives in Butte, Montana, who will never the Roots, Jazzies, etc. Without bgoing to a major market to check them out. My rhyme partner is from Philly he always goes down to the Black Lily as sees the OKAYplayers is he more loyal than me? no. It only takes him 1/2 hour on the train to get the 5 spot, while takes me 6hrs. to travel across the state of Pennsylvania.

I see what you are saying.. I have the Jazzees album, and I am pheening to get to a live show, but with my luck---something always happens to keep me from one.... I have The Roots Things Fall Apart album, I would love to hear Next Movement, Ain't saying Nothing New, Act Two (The Love of my Life) live..... But I do agree that geography plays a big part in getting to live performances...

I am a pretty loyal person by nature and I haven't until recently had the geographic and financial means to see the okay artists but I bought the CD's of course. I take supporting artists seriously. I will go support artists not only because I appreciate their talent but because I appreciate theier gumption and political stance. I listen to the Okayartists when I'm writing my poetry or a screenplay or a novel. I listen to them when I'm down and when I'm up. I think the greatest loyalty a fan can have to an artists is to just realize their gift in their music.

i really just got into going to functions not too long ago, but all those who i support new or old i still got love for them like D' Angelo nobody new if that man was coming back, but when he dropped that album (Vodoo) i showed my love and support by buyin it and when he came to town i showed more love buy going to see him it doesn't mean you aren't loyal cause you missed the shows anything can happen, but if you are buying what they are putting out a supportiing them that's loyal to me

I'm loyal to D' as a fan because I have loved his work since Brown Sugar. I listened to that album several times a day. I just totally absorbed it. Then when Voodoo came out he just took me to another place. The man's a genius. I had the pleasure of seeing his Voodoo concert (see my post "Voodoo Concert Review"--I think thats the name of the post). I'm pretty much new to The Roots and Common and the Jazzys. I'd love to see a show. How come the Roots never come to L.A.? What up with that?
I just checked out Common's site. It's tight. I love that song/video w/Lauryn Hill. Where the hell was I when that came out? I heard about Com a few years ago, but I never got around to getting his stuff. The same with The Roots. I noticed them when What They Do came out, but again, I never got around to getting their stuff. So, although I'm a newbie, I consider myself loyal. All of the Okay Artists are extremely talented people. They demonstrate what real Black music is about.
