"Whats up with this Common anti-f#g freestyle?"

yO, i heard about this freestyle that Common layed down at the Spitkicker tour about two dudes kissing each other during the concert. What happened? Some dude said that it was really really homophobic and completely made him a Common hater. I don't know what happened exactly but i kind of feel that if your anti-homosexuals than keep it to yourself. This is a big issue today in society and isn't a joke. Everyone knows Common is not the biggest fan of homosexuals as he talks about in LWFC, but openly dissing dudes that paid money to see you at a show is taking it a little far.

Anyways, i just wanted to know if anyone saw this.

the rap game is all fucked up now, what we goin do now, how we goin eat man, 50 back around

I was kinda surprised that he went off like that. I wish my memory were a little better and I could let you know a little bit more about it. I do remember thinking to myself that it sounded kinda harsh to me, especially given the fact that we were in San Francisco and there were probably a lot of gay people in the crowd. They probably didn't feel to great when Common said "So if you're on that gay (or fag or queer, I'm not sure which word) shit, get the fuck up outta here."

However, it did not turn me into a Common hater. I still luh that guy But then again, I'm not gay, so I didn't feel as insulted by it as others did. A couple of minutes before that freestyle he was telling the crowd to be cool, stop fighting with one another, show love, be careful not to push the women cause they are queens etc. So, I dunno. If that's how he feels the need to express himself....

Well kinda...I was at the show in the front, but off to the side, so I didn't see the couple kissing. But I did hear Common's freestyle. I think he said something to the effect of "this is san francisco, not san fagcisco...or something like that. Well, I don't want to quote him, but everyone gets the picture. A few things come to mind when I think back to that moment and read some of these people's responses...

1. Big cities are usually know for something. NY for the Statue Of Liberty, L.A. for the weather...San Francisco is known for gay people. Everyone knows that!!!

2. Does everyone honestly think that these two guys were really that familiar with Common? Do you think they said to themselves "We know Common doesn't like homosexuality, so let's kiss in front of him?" I mean, if you were black (and I am, so I can say this), would you pay your $ to hear someone dis black people? If you were white, would you pay $ to hear someone talk about white folks (well, actually some of you would and do. And what I mean by that is a black hip-hop artist can say something about white people, and a lot of white people still buy the album or pay to see the show. I'm only speaking the truth!) They probably just went to the show to hear some good music.

3. It's a double-standard. Most of ya'll know if it was 2 females making out, you'd love it. But since it's male, it's disgusting.

4. You don't have to like everything that goes on around you. I don't like seeing fat girls in biker shorts or half shirts, but that's their perogative if they want wear it. Just like it's their perogative if these two guys want to kiss.
If you don't like it, turn your head, as long as it's not hurting you.

5. Most people that are paranoid about gayness, are usually trying to hide something themselves. If you are comfortable with your manhood or your womanhood, they it shouldn't asffect you.

Now from a hip-hop perspective, the fact that Common busted into a freestyle about something he witnessed-I can appreciate that, even though I don't agree with anything he said. Hell, if we agreed with everything that was said in our music, we'd all probably be a bunch of bitches, hoes, and niggaz (props to the artists who go beyond that). From a humanity perspective, well we are all human beings and we all deserve to be treated with respect. Just remember that...

on some real shit... AINT NO FAGS gonna be slobbin each other down right in my house either. I think Com just had a reaction to it.

Gays really be wildin out, and everybody know that, i was at this one "white" party at my college and two gay cats was on the couch DURING THE PARTY jerkin each other off. Now i'm not one to gay bash but they allmost caught a bad one.

If thats was my way of life, i think i'd be a little more conscience of the impact PDA's could have. You make your bed, you lie in it.

go to no parties with quez, lol
naah seriously though, that shit is nasty. let me play devil's advocate for a second though. if a guy and girl were getting it on, would they have caught one? lol

damn two guys, ewwwwww. well i might take a beating for this but that is fucking unnatural. i have nothing against gays, your choice, but it is not natural. two ladies though. there is evidence that shows that two ladies might be okay. more on that later, seriously

I've read a few posts and articles on common, and yeah, the guy is a regular guy too. He's got his
weaknesses and strengths. BUT....that doesn't excuse him for words or deeds he says or does. I wasn't at the concert & don't know what exactly was said. But even on his tour posts, he stated that it wasn't cool what those 2 guys did. I'm not gonna lie, it bothers me to think that someone who talks alot about spirituality, reflection & social awareness would counter all of that by openly expressing his dislike for a particular group. I think he's got to learn verbal etiquette in his current position. Unfortunately as much of a regular guy he is at heart, he has a much broader audience that listen to every word he says. He's not in the southside of chicago poppin' shit with his boys.
I don't know common personally, but i only judge him on a musical level, whereby i feel he is a talented person in his field. but, in the end, it's not cool to point or pick out a group of people. His comments are very serious. He has to realize that there is no difference in pointing out or disliking someone because of sexual orientation than it is to dislike someone because of race or ethnicity. I'm not your pastor or spiritual advisor com, your a grown man and you'll have to answer for your actions if you want to or not. Your not that indie artist struggling to get noticed anymore. Your at level of higher exposure, which is the price you pay to want to do what u do for a living.
Peace to com & he's gotta reflect a bit..

I agree that there is no excuse for offensive comments and that people should be tasteful when choosing their words, but let's be real. He may have been offensive, but you make it sound as though it were a crime he committed.

I think that people today are too accepting of everything that goes on. Not to say that I'm homophobic, but I do not accept that kind of lifestyle and I refuse to go along with it just b/c it's done. Common speaks of spirituality and part of spirituality, to me, is being pure and true to your beliefs. If he feels that way about gays, then so be it. Who are YOU to judge his perspective? I'm a spiritual person myself, and part of it is turning yourself inside out and examining everything that you believe in order to be more complete.(Know thyself) Where Common is in his spiritual journey, I don't know, but expressing yourself is not a crime.
And excuse you, but he doesn't need practice in verbal etiquette. I'm glad that he is not afraid to say what he feels. It's time that people tell the truth and stop going along with the gradient. We as a society need to get everything on the table so that we can sort them out. Common's remarks may cause a stir, but at least people will start talking about issues that really matter.

Making fun of someone's sexual orientation is NOT nearly the same as making fun of etnicity or race.
If I was gay, I could hide it from the world. But I can't hide my blackness. There's a difference.

174. "done topic...."
In response to Reply # 158

this topic is done for me. I've got my opinions, everyone has theirs. After reading most of these posts, Opinions ran the gamut. To say i was disappointed with some of the opinions is an understatement. How can people "seem" to have so many things in common but stray in big issues.
There's no way i'm gonna condemn someone for trying to be who they are, even if they don't live the lifestyle i believe in. Neither would i try to oppress somebody by being a part of the problem. You may not see the issue as being as important as others because of your personal circumstances, but you shouldn't downplay other's who are suffering. Until a year ago, i didn't really know anybody gay, but after working with some co-workers who were, i opened my eyes and perceptions about what i thought gay people were all about. I got schooled and learned how small my way of thinking was in pigeon-holing people to fit my limited experiences. Today, i realized i can be friends with people if their gay or not, 'cause i realized we all have the same needs and emotions. And to make light of this situation is like making light of an offensive joke about someone and playing it off as "what?? it's just a joke man, lighten up..". To much of that mentality i've seen and i silently went along with even though i disagreed inside.
I said my peace, but people will always look out for #1 before opening up for others. I think it's human nature to do that.

what the man was trying to say is that Com can have his opinion about gays, and say what he wants about them, but the way he does it, he makes himself an asshole. There is something to be said for being pure and true to your beliefs, but there's also something to be said about ignorant beliefs. Ever heard the saying "Hate the sin, love the sinner"?

I personally think homosexuality in men is pretty weird. Women are so interesting sexually, and men are the antithesis of that. In that way, I also find heterosexuality in women weird. Doesn't make any more sense to me than gay men.

and what's up w/ questlove? that guy always makes it seem like there's nothing to discuss whenever anyone brings up Com's homosexua... i mean homophobia. maybe quest is tryin to hide something too, i don't know.

i'm not saying Com should be 100% accepting of men kissing at his shows, but he should ask them not to a bit more respectfully instead of insulting people who paid to see him.

as for quez's party.... EEEWWWWWWWWW!

That last line about homosexuals being able to hide their sexuality... therefore making it different than being racist is totally ignorant. Why should someone have to hide their sexuality in order not be made fun of. Why are the victims at fault? Why not say that the one's making fun of him/her should check themselves? If there was a procedure that a black man could go through to appear white, would that make it okay to ridicule and judge him based on his race? And would it be okay for him to go through the procedure. What does that say about him comprimising who he is? We've come too far as a society to judge people based on such mediocre things. Lets all try to progress.

Of course there are people who have to hide their homosexuality! In some places, hiding it is the difference between life and death. Not everyone is so accepting of that kind of lifestyle. And what the fuck is so ignorant about saying that homosexuals are able to hide their sexuality and therefore making a difference between being racist? Have you ever been called a NIGGER to your face? It is a horrible feeling. I was 10 yrs old when a girl called me a nigger. It was painful, but I dealt with it. Do you think that if Matthew Shephard didn't come out that he would still be alive? I don't have to let my mom know that I like girls, but I can't tell someone that I'm not black.

The victim is not at fault, but sometimes playing that part is essential to survival. And those who play the part of the bully do need to check themselves, though. Muthafuckas have to stop putting down others to compensate for their small penises. It's never okay to judge a man by his race, even if he tries to change it. People do whatever they have to do to get acceptance....jeopardize their futures, ruin others' lives and many other things. Sometimes it's not about beind who YOU are, but who others BELIEVE you are.

I agree that we need to progress, but we still judge people for stupid shit. In this world, if i chew with my mouth open or speak with a lisp, I could get teased all four years of high school. I WISH that some people were like you, but that's not the case. I don't know what kind of innocent, sugarcoated world you live in, but shit is brutal sometimes out here. C'est la vie.

I'm just reserving spot #100 in the list of replies that this is bound to get...on the real we've all been there before..it's been discussed ad nauseam on this board..even rahzel has been held up to the light before...
on a serious note, if I was in frisco I would not use that fag line in a freestyle...but that's just out of principle...
I still don't think I will feel comfortable around some homo boys kissing...lesbos I'm cool with ...but I've come to accept that maybe some people are genetically gay so I can't really blame them...
Maybe common was so repelled at the sight that it filtered into his stream of consciouness when he was freestyling...
Anyway anybody who truly listens to common knows his views on "fags"..if you go to his show, why would you expect something different?

Plus, what are two gay guys doing "front row" at a Common show? I mean, Com has been homophobic all his carreer so I dont know what these cats was tryin to do. I know i wouldnt be supportin a rascist MC....

I'm not trying to hate but still, that is faulty. How you gonna hate on someone for who they are fucking? I mean what does that have to do with me? You don't have to wave your rainbow banner to know that it is not cool to be bigoted. Don't pass that buck. I think a lot of folks do that to artists because it is easier than really dealing with the issue. Whatever we think, We gotta think crtically.

Here's the deal: Com's a homophobe. Straight up. Anybody that's heard Like Water For Chocolate would know he's a homophobe. It's not cool, but it's the truth.

So if you heard Like Water for Chocolate, and got offended by that shit, why would you go to his concert? Just like if I was white, and he was on the Kill Whitey tip, I wouldn't go to the show either.

Why is it a guy and a girl can kiss all they like in public, but two dudes kissing is making a scene? On the same tip, though, cats should know what they're getting themselves into. Them cats kissing should've knowned Common was going to clown them if he caught them.

It's not right, but they should've known.

just cause eminem is a bigot doesn't mean com should be too... but I agree with what other folks have already said. If I was gay I wouldn't show up at a Com venue, simply because he's made it clear that he's not so tolerant of homosexuality. That's his right, and even though I think he should be more openminded he's allowed to have his opinions... It may not be the most polite thing for him to start going nuts on the gay guys in his audience, but then again those guys probably should have thought twice before their public displays of affection, since they knew they were at a com concert.

Quest,

Fine. Screw Eminem for his homophobic lyrics, which are hateful, neanderthal, intolerant, silly, dumb, short-sighted, very American, ignorant, juvenile and boring.

Now.

Fuck Common for the exact same bullshit. It always fascinated me when an artist so intelligent on the one hand can be so ignorant on the other.
Both Eminem and Common's lyrics are laughable. Why are they so afraid of homosexuals? At least Eminem admits he's ignorant white trash. Common tries to be positive and spiritually support his community, but read Breaking Bread by bell hooks and Cornel West. They show that homophobia divides and weakens the Black community just as it does in any peoples.

I'm not an eminem fan (may even be a hater..) but he never put himself out there as a spiritual and conscious person as common has. Someone that on the one hand comes across as such an intelligent, conscious mc then disses "faggots" every chance he gets will be more criticized (and should be) than someone who can't even be taken seriously in the first place.

Now that the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (aka GLAAD) is going after Eminem, can we discuss Com's homophobia?

Em is being crucified for his homophobic comments...GLAD (gays and lesbians against discrimination?) is demanding an apology for some of his comments and is on a media campaign to make him accountable for those lyrics. If Com sold more records, they'd probably be after him too.

Look, I try very hard to be tolerant. I was invited to a dinner party once by a young lady i went to college with, only to discover once I got there that she was a lesbian and so were most of the invitees. Now, as progressive as I try to be, I'm honest enough to say that this Southern boy was a little uncomfortable at the sight of ladies sitting on each others laps, kissing each other. I'm still trying to get over my prejudices. But I wouldn't dis anybody for doing their thing. It's not right. How would y'all react if Com made fun of someone in the audience because they were overweight ("all you fat fucks, get the hell out my show") or Asian ("your eyes are too slanted to see my style") or whoever. It's not cool...

Every man and woman should be held accountable for his or her actions.

What Eminem does should not concern Com.

This isn't the media going after Com, this is Com's fans questioning his actions.

What if that were two male Okayplayers kissing and they got shouted out by Common?

These people paid for a show not to have their lifestyle attacked by the very person they paid to see.

Now I wasn't there and maybe it did not happen like nick said it did but if it did, it's WRONG in 7 time zones, 12 different languages, and whichever of the 18 ways you look at it.

somebody talkin bout "Until De La is crucified for all their talk about 'makin money', Puffy is off limits."

Everyone is accountable for what they say, regardless of what joe shithead at the other record company says.

Not to defend Eminem's homophobia, but what little I have heard of his lyrics, yes he seems pretty homophobic, but he always sounds like he's joking. Com sounds like he's joking some of the time too ("in a circle of faggots...") ("...spend nights up in dykes..."), but sometimes it sounds hella serious ("we used to ??? ??? and bang fags") (whatever he said at that SF show)...

Not in disagreement wit ya, quest... just making light of your biased use of emphasis.

into gardening? i think com was referring to mexicans who garden for a living because its pretty much the only job new immigrants can get since they speak no english and have no other qualifications in this country. i wouldn't say they're "into gardening" they're more forced to garden. i see it everyday where i live, 10 mexicans in a pick up truck that drive to all the apartment buildings and do the gardening. they sure as hell dont look too happy like they're "into" what they do.

Do any of y'all see how FUCKED UP this is?

Music should be a place to ESCAPE this kind of bullshit. If I went to a Roots show or a Common show or any concert and the emcee on stage told me to Get The Fuck Out Of Here because he didn't like who I am?? Or if I saw an emcee do that to ANYONE else, it would ruin the whole show for me.

If anybody understands the magic and the power of the spoken word, of rap, it's OkayPlayers. We've all had rap music affect us emotionally, we all have our songs that still get a deep instinctive reaction from us. The thrill of a good live show is unparalleled.

Going to a live show to pay homage to an artist you respect, looking for that thrill, that damn-that-emcee-made-my-day exhilleration that comes from a good show and then right when you're into it getting told to Get The Fuck Out Faggot is one of the worst betrayals I could imagine. It'd be like getting kicked in the balls by a friend.

Y'all are hating on anyone who's like "I don't like Com cause he's a homophobe," but do you see how hard it is for me to give Com the trust and respect I want to when he pulls that shit? I want to like the guy, I want to be able to listen to LWFC without wincing every three songs, but I can't and that's sad and it makes me hella mad at him.

Hope that made some sense.

"gays be wilding out" ?

shit. i've been mugged by black people on multiple occassions (and never by any other ethnicity) - do you want me to yell something based on your logic like, "black people be fucking violent criminals!"

judge individuals not an entire race or group.

Sex outside of marriage?
Sex for purposes other than conception?
Uh oh, god may have some issues with me too . .

Seriously though, since you base your argument in God, do you consider yourself a religious person? Do you have an issue with premarital heterosexual sex? Sex using birth control?

No offense Quez, but I think the "God hates it" argument is a little absurd. Most of the people I know who make this argument (I'm not sure if you are in this group or not) don't mind violating the rules of the Old Testament in a million other ways, but they get all righteous when it comes to homosexuality.

Just a thought,

You are so right. The gay issue is one that people are so quick to defend on a religious basis, but I didn't most of those people at church last Sunday--after sexin' it up at the club on Saturday night!!!! Check yo self!

Agreed, I was just trying to point out how people tend to selectively claim biblical authority, which as you pointed out in your later post tends to mimic the own person's opinions.

No no no. The man's got a right to speak his mind, and I'm not contesting that. I'm just venting. It just hurts to see something that's hurt so many people I care about infused into something I really care about, and there's nothing I can really do about it other than vent on the OKP boards.

You know, it's always a shock of reality hearing things like that (GOD don't like homos...Com telling gays to leave his concert...etc) just like with sexism, since I'm neither gay nor a woman, it's easy to think that both don't exist in the year 2000, just like there's all sorts of white people out there that think racism isn't a problem anymore.

But it apparently is.

I really don't see why so many people have a problem with homosexuals. It just doesn't make sense to me, the same way it doesn't make sense that one person could have a problem with other races, or men with women. You could try explaining it to me a million times and I just wouldn't get it. Do cats think hanging around gay people will make them catch gay syndrome? Or that the goal of gay people is to turn straight people gay?

I respect Com as an artist that every now and then has some true lyrics, but I can't respect that, just like I can't respect a white rapper who was on some Fuck Niggas shit.

Com's homophobia is a topic that has been on the board over and over again. It's sad, but dude's not going to change. I mean, I'm a fan of his music, but bruh man is going to stay ignorant about this until he's forced to open his mind one day. The same goes for everyone else.

YOu might as well get a response from a gay okayplayer in this thread. and, since its already ASSUMED that Hot_Damali and I speak for all the OUT okayplayers here (let's not GET INTO those who are FRONTIN with a quickness, but since i don't out folk..you know the spiel), i'll give my take on the situation:

Okay, i wasn't there..i heard about the freestyle from folk that i knew who attended the concert (gay and straight) and after i read Common's journal. I'm sorry, but this is Common's OPINION...It's wrong/it's fucked up/ but it is STILL his views and he is allowed to say them being that he is American and we do have that Constitutional freedom to do so.

But, as i have stated and will state, IT'S FUCKED UP! not only is homophobia fucked up, so is anyone spouting off some ignorant ish that's racist/sexist/classist and the like. What i'm trying to get at is that we can't hold JUST Common accountable for views that MANY FOLK say and get away with.

This one's for ?uestlove: i agree with you 100%--As much as folk want to attack Common for his views, i have YET to hear any gays or lesbians JUMP on Eminem for the shit he spews. I'm sorry, but i hate pulling race into this (but, THEN AGAIN, all isms are interconnected, etc.) BUT if Common was white, there would BE NO discussion on this. Eminem is an MC--skills or no skills--who gets away with being homophobic/racist/sexist (TELL ME you didnt think his calling Jada Pinkett Smith a bitch in I'm Slim Shady/dissing Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears/his MOTHER/Jennifer Lopez was wrong..PLEASE so i can break this one down in another post, but i digress)/etc. and NO ONE is up at arms. I just don't get it--this only seems to happen when artists of African descent (Buju Banton is a prime example for his song "Boom Bye Bye"), correct or not correct in their feelings, say what they think.

Look, i'm not trying to be a champion of free speech and shit (as anti-American as i feel somedays), but I WILL CHAMPION the right for a person to speak their mind. plain and simple...

as for PDA (public displays of affection): i don't care if you're GAY OR STRAIGHT--I DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT want to see you slobbering all over someone at a damn concert. sorry..i just don't. i don't care WHERE it is..i don't want to see and neither do most folks. that's what a bedroom is for, thanks! the two men who were at that concert: that was wrong.

I don't know...I guess I'm just not taking it as seriously as everyone else FEELS they have too (knowing DAMN WELL most of y'all hide behind being open minded anyways...). All i can do is speak for ME, RYAN CANTY: irregardless of how Common feels, i still respect him. my love for his music wont' die--neither will my love for hip-hop. Granted, it's probably one of the most complex areas to deal with as a gay/lesbian/sgl/bisexual man or woman..ESPECIALLY if you are a person of color. But, it's not going to change the way i feel about the music...

And, i do agree with the person who said that he doesn't get WHY folk have issues with gay people. i don't get it either....i still DO NOT understand how what you do behind closed doors can MARK a person so damned much. WHEN, if folk really THOUGHT about it, it doesn't. I won't even touch how stereotypes of homosexuality (based on WHITE PEOPLE) become confounded and damn near non-existent when people of color are involved.

To Quez: i don't agree withyou...not with what you're saying, but mainly cause IT SEEMS LIKE your feelings are based on the WHITE PEOPLE you see at your school. Sorry, but PLEASE don't assume that ALL GAY FOLK are that wild in public. I'm not..THOSE WHITE DUDES DON'T REPRESENT ME AND I DO NOT REPRESENT THEM..it's THAT SIMPLE. dammit--this shit kills me. cause that's the WHOLE ARGUMENT for why black people (some) seem to have issue with non-heterosexuality--in addition to citing the Bible (that's a WHOLE NUTHER TOPIC), people always say that gay folk are nasty..come to find out, their perceptions are BASED on what they see WHITE FOLK doing on tv/print media/etc. i'm sorry, but THAT is NOT my EXPERIENCE..PERIOD. once again--assumed images of gay people DO NOT speak to my DAILY LIFE EXPERIENCE AS A BLACK SAME GENDER LOVING MAN..it doesn't. but, i can't prove that toyou, Quez, can i? not to be foul, but it seems like you're quite sure that ALL gay people act like those random white guys at your school. that IS part of the "gay community" (which i don't like cause it's not inclusive anyways), but it's a small part. But, if u believe that ALL GAY FOLK ARE LIKE THAT (and, it looks like you do), then you're living in ignorance and that's a problem i can't correct for you..you have to correct that yourself.

In general, i don't know...Common could change his ways..he may not. BUT..that's not up to us to decide. More importantly, indiviudals need to decide whether OR NOT they feel they should be suporting Common as a fan they're offended by what he says. If you cant, return your cd's now. if ou can, move on. But, hoping that Common will change wont' help. He needs to do that on his own (IF he needs to be changed...which i doubt).

Ryan

P.S. if any of you want to discuss this matter personally with me, I'm at RyanCanty@world.oberlin.edu

P.P.S. hmm..HotThyng76--i'm sure you'll give a more "mainstream" counter response and tell me why im wrong..so, i await your post.

Do
>you think a racist man

agreed....if a racist man walkedinto a common concert, he SHOULD expect a diss from common AND AN ASS KICKING from the audience. at least, I'MA KICK HIS ASS if hes next to me.

And
>fuck all this right or
>wrong shit... certian shit is
>just gonna cause conflict.
true this does..as do most things that folk are uncomfortable with or don't understand. but, folk do have right to express feelings that counter this: i.e., folk who have issue with homophobes should expect to debate withfolk who are homophobic and can justify how they feel...that's just life.

BWAAAAAHAHAHAAHAHA good cow analogy..true again. com did what he had to do....just like the folk who are bothered like this are doing what they have to do, right or wrong. i'm just saying that folk need to speak their peace.

i think we're saying the same things, Quez, we're just coming at it from different standpoints. which is cool...no prob with that. i do agree with you on a lot of shit (which i'll get assaulted for by a a few gay okayplayers. but fuck it, black folk arent monolithic--we all have our own viewpoints and thoughts on shit. bout time we started speaking on them..)

oh you mean that BRIEF ASS press release they put out--the protest that basically died down b/c eminem's camp said they'd TONE IT DOWN the next time around.

sorry..but that doesn't fly with me. GLAAD isn't all that..LOOK at their poor track record when it comes to dealing with LGBT people of color. they're JUST NOW addressing it...no, i just dont' take GLAAD seriously when it comes to protesting homophobia. sorry, but being half ass about issues just doesn't cut it if you ask me.

Thanks for taking the time to break it all down, Ryan. I agree with most of what you said...the only point that you and I differ on is the PDA thing. I personally see nothing wrong with it. Hugging/kissing/holding hands in public by any type of couple is fine with me. But that's a matter of personal preference and it's cool.

To all the homophobes: sorry to disappoint you but you can't cure us or kill us all. Gays have always been around and we're here to stay. So sowwy.

After reading all the responses on this thread, I have formed my official opinion on this matter (please feel free to not give two shits about what I think...I mean, who the hell am i anyway?): I was more disappointed in Common than angry at him. But I'm still gonna support his music and I'll be in the front row at Roseland in NYC if I can manage. I'm not dating Common so I don't have to like his views. As long as he keeps making the hot shit, he can say whatever the hell he wants. If something really offends me too much, I don't have to buy it. Miles Davis was an admitted wife beater...women all over the world still bought his music.

Common, like many other young men, is still going through his process of growing up. Wisdom only comes with time and he may or may not change the way he feels at some point. I do not support Eminem in anyway, so that's my way of disagreeing with the stupid shit he says.

The two guys kissing in front: hey, it's a free country...kiss if you want. Everyone else be damned.

gurl, thanks for the post(i'm actually doing research for a movie i'm trying to write..the shit i'm looking at is boring as hell, so i NEED a break from it! ).

i really don't have much to say...i'm not angry at Common either. but, i do feel as you do...folk are still growing. eventually (i hope), his feelings will change. if they don't, then they don't. it's not of any concern to me. as long as he keeps putting out good music, then i don't take ish with it.

but, i do understand why folk are debating the issue though..and, it's about due time....long overdue.

but, continue on family...

What I still don't get is this : why would it be OK for two women to be kissing in public (like Common and someone else in this thread suggested), but not for two men ?
Cos that doesn't fit in heterosexual male fantasy ?

I'm not a big fan of i.e. tonguekissing in public myself, especially not in a crowded place such as a concert hall, but that goes for both men and women. If it's too much in my face, I'll make a remark about it.

I'm not tongueing my woman down in the street myself, but that's a personal opinion.

In the end, I'd rather see 2 men having a good time at a show, than heads knocking each other out and fighting.

I don't know how I feel about this, for real.

Sankofa...I agree, Com has the right to express his BACKASSWARDS/FUCKED UP/HOMOPHOBIC/DISGUSTING/GUT WRENCHING/ABOUT-TO-MAKE-ME-SELL-MY-COPY-OF-LWFC/THIS-IS-WHY-I-DON'T-LISTEN-TO-MUCH-HIP-HOP views if he wants because this is a free country. God Bless America.

As for the Eminem thing...GLAAD has recently spoken out against Em, so his day has come. And I personally don't give a fuck what he says because his whole image is about offending/upsetting the masses. Com is on another page. He's all about "enlightenment", right? So, I hold him to a higher standard, I guess. He's failing miserably on this count.

I'm seriously thinking of selling LWFC.

i agree with timmy....

anyway, that people care if common's a homophob more than if eminem is one has to do with that common has intelligent opinions and things to say, and then when he says something like this... it's worse when it's someone who's intelligent. Who could think better then that. This is so nasty. I should stop listen to common, but how could i do that when i love his music?

i've also heard that he's against abortion? oh no... what am i going to say? sometimes i feel like to stop listen to music made by men, books written by men and all these movies with only men in them. Just because common is against abortion. it makes me so tired... and this is one of the reasons i don't like religions, it gives you a reason to oppress people! Common raps about oppression of blacks, how can he oppress homosexual people? that's selfish.

okay, that's all. Sorry about my spelling / grammar. I'm not so good at english.

homophobia exists because people dont know any gay people! They hear stories and see stuff in the media which stereotypes gay people. All people need to be educated on homophobia, homosexuals have existed since at least the 1800's! The more gay people one knows the better understanding they'll about it! If your sheltered from any type of homosexuality, your not going to understand it. But if some dude your friends with for many years says he's gay....your not going to abandon him? You need to know homosexuals to become ok with homosexuality!

homophobia exists because of what homosexuality is and represents. I do in fact know gay people and have had a gay friend or too. I have during college been placed with a gay roomate twice (go figure) during my first two years in the dorms. Those homosexual people i'm cool wit may not like what i have to say but i know they understand where i'm comin from.

And dont use the religion cop-out either cause thats not where it all lies. One does not have to identify with any religion to have an instictive disdain (spelling) for homosexuality. It goes back to SIMPLE and PLAIN biology, do i have to get graphic? If everyone was gay... civilization would cease to exist without technological methods of reproduction. Like i've said before... if you wake up one day and say "oh shit i'm gay", you probably need some therapy. Handle dat. I refuse to believe people are born GAY. What the fuck is GAY to an infant and since when can a backwards sexual preference be coded into DNA? The problem is people, society and the human mind. Our own ability to question is the cause for shit like this.

just to clarify things: you are basically explicitly stating that you think DNA allows NO room for bisexuality or homosexuality.

(not to mention the many other types of non-heterosexual sexual behavior.)

and therefor those types of sexual behavior are the CHOICE of the individual.

okay - then how do you explain bonobo monkeys and other (MANY!) animals who practice bi or homo sex?

hell, female dolphins initiate sex with humans by inserting human divers' flippers into their vaginas! do we accuse those mischevious dolphins of bestiality?

sarcasm: those must be some evil monkeys and dolphins! i'm sure god is outraged and is reserving a special place for them in hell.

relax. it's just sex. it's not that big of a deal. and it's nothing to get outaged about.

the way you try argue against homosexuality is juvenile. and to be honest, it reminds me of the way I MYSELF thought of sex when i was 12 or 13.

but that way of thinking is so retarded............

well, actually there have been homosexuals since humans existed. There are homosexual chimpanzees who we share descendants with(although they are usually shunned by their community) but recorded accounts of homosexuality date back to Ancient Greece. Ever read Shakespeare? He clowns with gay characters all the time(not saying gay people are clowns, just some individuals' flamboyant aptmospheres are pretty comical) The Greeks fucked anyone and everyone. And there was another good point made. WE ARE ANIMALS. No matter how much you don't want to believe it, we are hairless primates(apes). And if you take your bible a little too seriously(btw, the bible is a great book and contains very valueable and good teachings, as does the quoran)then you also believe that we're all ancestors of two folks named Adam and Eve. Wouldn't incest be inevidible in that case? Anyway, back to evolution. Humans have adapted bipedalism due to long distance walking, smaller teeth and certain digestive systems due to a changing diet, large brains due to advancing in tool use and hunting techniques, and sexual instincts due to the need of procreation. But these things constantly change. So why the sudden increase of gay people in our day and age? Well, THERE ARE TOO MANY DAMN PEOPLE IN THE WORLD! We have to realize that if everyone was made naturally to have kids then the population will just keep rising. The high population is the main cause for every single problem in the world. You can break everything down and it will all come back to the fact that there are just too many people and not enough resources, outlets, etc.. Now we can't go terrorist malitia and go killin off motherfuckers because besides the fact that it is wrong, it wouldn't make a dent. I believe(and I may not be right, but my opinion) that homosexuality is a part of natural selection. There are too many people so it is convenient that people have these urges now to be with the same sex. Out of all of our evolutionary changes the thing that has taken the longest to change is sex. Sexually, we are animals and that's it. If you disagree with me than I doubt you've ever had sex before. I ain't sayin that we should all be gay and get the population down, but let's not discourage those whose urges tell them to do so. Think about the big picture. We need gay people. Sure I've had gay dudes come at me pretty scandalous before, but I'm sure that women feel the same way about niggas. I've also had some gay dudes make me feel quite flattered by how they think of my appearence. I mean i don't go that way and I would never trade my girl's stuff for a man, but I can't hate them for it. And I know I'd be down to watch 2 fine ladies go at it. So I'm just comfortable with the fact that I klnow who I am. Homophobes got a little fear in them. Not necessarily because they are afraid of being gay, but just scared of what they don't understand. Just like racism. So basically it all comes down to evolution and the fact that we are all animals. Yall disagree you better back it up because I am quite educated on the subject of human evolution. So don't diss cuz you don't understand. Just agree to disagree. word. Com is still the shit though. He probably just don't understand gay people. You know I don't really either. But I don't hold that against them

yep

>Common raps about oppression of
>blacks, how can he oppress
>homosexual people? that's selfish.

I think you need to rethink that statement. Com has never oppressed gay people. He would have to DO something to them in order to do that. I really don't like it when people compare the Black experience with the gay experience. Of course the two experiences are similar in regards to facing overall descrimination, but beyond that the two are completely different. I'll give you an example. A Black person is born with their color (and no I'm not saying gay people aren't born that way). We (Black people) walk through life with our color. There is no hidding it. Gay people can simply (if they choose to) hide in the closet. No one has to know that they are gay if they don't want them to. On the surface, oppression is oppression, but the oppression of Black people and gay people aren't the same. And before anybody attacks that statement think about it like this: When you were a child and your parents put you on punishment you were being oppressed, right? Let's just say you were told not to go outside to play, but you could stay in your room and do whatever. Now, ask yourself, would you rather be TOLD to stay in your room or FORCED to stay by being chained to the bed or something? That's a silly example, but it gets my point across, which is this: They are both forms of oppression, but one is more extreme than the other.

I have nothing against gay people. I don't agree with the concept of homosexuality, but that doesn't make me dislike a person just because they are gay. What they do is their business. I don't agree with what they do, but I can't still respect them as people. Their sexual preference has nothing to do with their personality. Now, Com chose to voice his opinion. He had every right to do so. Some people may not have liked the way he did it, but that's his way. Like it or leave it.

No, you have right about that it's worse to be black then to be homosexual. But... if you're homosexual and chose to NOT hide that, you mean that they're have to put out with comments like that`? because they wanna live like other people are able to do? no... of course it's worse to be black, but, homosexual shouldn't have to hide what they are. Like, now Common knew they where homosexuals, because they didn't hide it, so it's no differnce then if someone said that all black people should leave the concert. It's oppression.

If he said "all Racists leave" it would be oppression too. Oppression isnt the issue.

I'm tired of people equating gay/lesbian movement to the Civil Rights movement. Gay/Lesbian groups can run around and demonstrate, throw parades, have a day declared Gay Pride day... but its ok for Gay/Lesibians and everyone else to hate Racists and Canibals and Communists.

Is it okay for ANY group of people to decide to do ANYTHING that will cause disruption and rally for it. NO!!!

I cant wait till all the Gay/Lez peeps are fully accepted into society then the Cow-Fuckers start coming out and throwing Cow-Fucker Pride rallies. I cant fuckin WAIT to see the Gay/Lez people hate on them.

No, to be a racist is an OPINION. it's nothing you are and can't help. It's about what you think. to say "all homosexuals leave" is about what you ARE. Like if you're black. If i AM a racist or whatever people can tell me to leave because they don't like what i'm saying and thinking, but if you're homosexual or black it isn't about that.

>If he said "all Racists leave"
>it would be oppression too.
> Oppression isnt the issue.

Racism = 100% socialisation, and acting according to a certain ideology, includes the oppression of otherwise-thinking people.

Sexuality = basis is biological, the way in which it is expressed depends on socialisation. Does NOT include the oppression of other people.

So comparing homosexuality with racism makes no sense at all.
Homophobic behaviour with racism on the other hand ...

>I'm tired of people equating gay/lesbian
>movement to the Civil Rights
>movement. Gay/Lesbian groups can
>run around and demonstrate, throw
>parades, have a day declared
>Gay Pride day...

Black People can have a Million Man March, run around and demonstrate, ...

>Is it okay for ANY group

>disruption and rally for it.

The question is if homosexuals cause the actual "disruption", or inconfident heterosexuals who project their own insecurities and problems with women onto homosexuals.

Sex between adults means there is consent, regardless of the hetero or homosexual nature of that sexual relationship. I don't see any consent in cow-fucking.

You might as well compare the feminist movement with a bunch of cats demanding equal rights, that's how ignorant your equation is.

why are americans so disgusted by public displays of affection? shit. you go to some european countrys and couples will be embracing each other in public parks for hours.

people kissing isn't that big of a deal.

and why not be happy that there are people enjoying each other's love and affection?

the way y'all get so disgusted by PDA (especially if it's only kissing!) makes you sound so prude. relax. it's just a kiss. you're not going to get cooties from them.

Why should it be ? To maintain and fortify the division between "us" heteros and "them" homos ?

Weigh a few freestyles and a couple lines versus the entire marshall mathers LP or anything else.
I also don't think you can infer how someone "is" from what they type in a tour journal once and can come to some assumption that Common is a "homophobe straight up".
Atleast he says his shit, other people just be PC and are thinking the same things.
I just think its funny that I don't see no "Homophobia and Eminem" posts in The Lesson..go figure.
I mean, equate "I didnt like seeing two men kissing" to "Hate fags the answer's yes".
Whatever.
I just pray that Dice Raw doesnt mention "Faggot" more than once in his new LP or we are gonna have 11 thousand more threads on this.

isn't that he says anti-faggot shit. that's ok. the reason he's gonna get criticsm than any other MC who does is because of what he claims to be. the whole "if you're mad at common, but you're not boycotting eminem don't speak to me" thing is bullshit. first off, one doesn't cancel out the other. to say it does is kinda covertly oppressive. and as for eminem, he repeatdly claims to be ignorant, and his fans get off on that. even the reviewers who tirelessly dick ride him call him ignorant. the problem with common is that in his music he claims to be righteous, he claims to be "conscious", and he looks down on other people for not being conscious enough, and not being humane enough. it's a living in a glass house thing. common's shit would even be ok if he was brand nubian or x-clan, who claimed to be conscious, and as an obvious part of their religious "consciousness" hate gays. but common comes off as wanting to have it both ways. straddling the fence, if you will. and that makes him come off looking bad. his gay-bashing comes off as more of an egotistical need than anything else. which is human, of course. but when you make songs like common does, expect people to be more critical of that.

I'm a writer and so i'm coming from an artist standpoint but this man can voice his opinion whenever he wants. If you don't like what he's saying, don't buy his shit. Plain and simple.
If someone doesn't like the topic of my book, then what.....DONT BUY IT!
That's the cool thing about living in Amerikkka, we actually have some kind of choice in most matters.

I'm not the one to judge either but two men kissing in front of me feels like something being pushed in my face and it makes me feel...well....uncomfortable. No more or less uncomfortable than when people push their religion or unwanted attention on me. Why shouldn't i say something about it. Some folks are scared to voice their opinion, scared of what the next person thinks but just as the two dudes made the concious effort to kiss in public, Cornbread made the concious effort to say something about it. That's it. That's all.

Oh....
Opinions are like assholes, everybody has one!

Ive been waiting for someone to address this.
cool.

Im really not particularly interested in censorship, boycott,or homo-bi-eroto-transphobic bullshit of any stripe.

Im bothering to post because for one, I dig Common. and as i said in a post way back, my experiences with him (caz meetings in the street and opening for him in '92) found him to be a really cool guy.

I'm really more disappointed than angered, because I really thought (and still believe) he's doper than he's allowing himself to come off.

Heard a couple days ago about common fagdissing in San Fran of all places, down the street from me at Maritime Hall (" This is the Bay Area, not the Gay Area" blah blah, among other things, I was told by a more than a few people who attended.)

I have for myself only, and primarily for my amusement, decided that one of the following things is true.

1. Common has some latent homo desire he is suppressing, and must constantly fagdiss in order to edify his fragile heteronormative stance,

or:

2. He is a very typical tall, handsome heterosexual well spoken lightskin-ded black man from the southside of Chicago. Being "good looking" and articulate, he is constantly challenged by other males (and women) in his social spheres with regard to his sexuality. An unfortunate part of Chicago's very conservative Midwestern "big city space/small town thinking" dynamics.

example

lightskinned (read: more beautiful) and articulate= white (read:"un-hiphop)= weak=effeminate=gay, faggot, etc.

are either of the above totally true? dont know.

do they have a smidgen of truth? id bet money, cause ive seen it played out over and over again.

whether people want to admit it or not, Bohemian,"progressive" hip-hop styings have long been the refuge of queerboys..

(I being one of many: I cant count how many times I got called "faggot" back in the day for being into De La, Pharcyde and such.I even heard people refer to Souls Of Mischief as "faggot pretty motherfuckas" for nothing more than being goodlooking and not on some gunboy shit)

and I can see Com having serious problems with being percieved as such, especially in terms of what it would mean to his commercial viability, which for the first time in his career, is a reality.

I still think its wack on his part, because he's obviously more talented than this.

I wouldnt want to be in his shoes.they look tight than a motherfuck.

kids make me laugh.

blindly supporting any cause that comes around so they can hold an "open minded" or "defender of justice" sign over their heads. sure, you can be open minded, but you can also know what the hell you do not like or put up with.

i know lots of gay people (or people that claim to be gay) and sure I can be 'cool' with them, but chances are I wouldn't be. It's like being gay is a fucking fashion statement these days.

"Oh, I'm oh so cosmopolitan! I'm bisexual!"

Get some self control and know how to stand for what you believe in and don't. You can't please everybody, so stop trying.

Com gets a pound.

It kills me, kids will talk all this pro-gay-open-mindedness and tell fag jokes in the locker room as soon as some girl they are trying to impress isnt around. Eff that. Just like I know white boys that listen to rap and know a nigga joke or three. the true colors always show, stop frontin'

ME: not fond of homosexuals, every one I've ever met has annoyed me.

ME: also doesn't like flaming heterosexuals, every one I've ever me has annoyed me.

It's all opinion, just like if you don't like grape jelly. or girls that smoke. or guys with hairy backs. or american sports cars. or three 6 mafia when compared to kmd. or rpgs when compared to street fighter games. or jazz as opposed to emo. get a grip.

people need to stop pretending like they have to like everything, cuz that's bullshit.

fuck being 'openminded' when you KNOW what you like and don't.

uhm ... just wondering ... do you consider the possibility that people might be genuinely trying to discuss this thing, out of an unsuspect motivation ? In other words : that some people wonder where all this hatred comes from, and try to discuss it ?

>sure, you can
>be open minded, but you

matter of fact, that's probably the exact reason why the initial poster posted this ...
How about me reading your line as follows : I don't like to put up with such statements, said by ANY person (this has nothing to do with just Com, I'm referring Quez his statements).

>i know lots of gay people

So, you know lots of gay people ? And ?

>(or people that claim to
>be gay) and sure I
>can be 'cool' with them,
>but chances are I wouldn't
>be. It's like being

So ? Even if you feel it is today, why should this bother you ?

>"Oh, I'm oh so cosmopolitan!
>I'm bisexual!"

What does this have to do with homosexuality and homophobic reactions ?
Just cos a few people explore and experiment and consider it "cool" or like to brag about it doesn't change the fact that people of the same gender genuinely love and care for each other and are sexually attracted to one another.

>Get some self control and know
>how to stand for what
>you believe in and don't.
>You can't please everybody,

Who says I am trying ? So noone can genuinely believe that homosexuality is normal ? Is as natural as heterosexuality ?

I agree, that's foul, but again : what does this have to do with the core subject here ? Does this make it OK for every person to diss gays, just cos some people have double standards or act hypocritical ?

I agree that people should stop pretending. That's exactly what I'm doing : I stop pretending to be a stereotypical chauvinist insecure heterosexual male.

Please.

Like your "genuinely discussing" this is gonna change someone's (Common's) mind. people know what they like and don't. people know exactly the types of answers to expect to the questions the ask. starting experiements you know the outcome to is stupid. asking questions you know the answer to makes said questions stupid-ass questions.

wonder where this hatred comes from? <--- stupid-ass question.

if you have a shred of common sense you already know where it comes from. just a few are: ignorant religious overtones, sexual insecurity, or just plain not liking the idea.

now if you think you're gonna erase the influence of religious overtones world wide you have another thing coming. are you going to cure the sexual insecurities of thick neck, 550 lb bench pressing, steroid popping, 'manly' chauvinist men? nope. if someone knows what they don't like you aint changin their mind.

usually when their minds are changed they've just been desensitized to the subject matter of have become apathetic. either way such individuals annoy me too.

genuinely discussing... blah blah, go paint a house if you want a cause. discussing com's views on homosexuality here are doing nothing for changing his mind and nothing to change the world, because last time i knew only 10,000 people come here a day. even less come to the boards. and that's a small number when sized with the billions of people sucking the life out of this globe.

dudes shoulda knew better than to be kissing at show common was at anyway.

the same reason it bothers me that eminem gets played on rock and roll stations when the roots are closer to rock and roll than em ever was, is, or will be. the same reason i hated it how the american audience all of a sudden picked up on the final fantasy series at FF7 because of the eye candy and movie, while the rest of the game and story was dumbed down. the same reason i dislike seeing kids walk around with those little beaded bracelets (praying beads I was told by my trendy sister) with chinese kanji on it and the only thing chinese they know is eggdrop soup and bruce lee. i hate trends. that's why it bothers me. and i usually am not friends with kids that follow a bunch of trends. like shit because it makes sense to you. gay people who are 'gay' using it as a way to be different, exclusive, cosmo, or victimized make NO sense to me and can get lost. that's the same for any trend i don't feel, we're just talking about homosexuality and common's reactions to it.

>
>>"Oh, I'm oh so cosmopolitan!
>>I'm bisexual!"
>
>What does this have to do
>with homosexuality and homophobic reactions
>?

homophobia is overused. most people i know that don't like gays aren't fearful of or scared of gay people, they just don't like them. and i'm not surprised when someone voices his disdain for something he/she doesn't like (whether it be mango juice, gays, checkers, country, black girls with blue contact lenses, black guys with white girls, or bell peppers), it's that person's decision and if you don't like it or what they have to say, get this-- don't deal with them.

>Just cos a few people explore
>and experiment and consider it
>"cool" or like to brag
>about it

that makes said person a scrub. SKUH-RUB.

>doesn't change the
>fact that people of the
>same gender genuinely love and
>care for each other and
>are sexually attracted to one
>another.
>

whether they genuinely love and are attracted to each other is not what i'm talking about. i'm talking about people who are always looking for causes to defend and jump in the middle of. bandwagon activists. and in this case, worrying about common and his 'homophobia'

i don't care who you love, the fact is if i dont agree or like it, i dont. plain and simple. and no amount of 'genuine discussion' is gonna change my mind.

kids shouldn't feel obliged to change their mind and ignore what they've been taught in order to reflect what the 'rest of world' around them thinks.

'loving' somebody is subjective anyway. you can say you love your dog or parrot and say you love your mother. 9 times out of 8 'loving couples' i run across these days don't have a clue what love is anyway.

>>Get some self control and know
>>how to stand for what
>>you believe in and don't.
>>You can't please everybody,
>>so stop trying.
>
>Who says I am trying ?

did i say: "krewcial, you are
trying to please everyone?"

no, i didnt. but yo, if the shoe fits, buy the whole clothing line to match.

> So noone can genuinely
>believe that homosexuality is normal
>? Is as natural
>as heterosexuality ?

you can genuinely believe what you want. people act like everyone has to genuinely believe what they do. i dont believe it's as normal as heterosexuality, because if that shit was the case the ration of homos to heteros would be a little closer. that's like saying fucking a tree trunk or elementary school age child is normal.

it may be normal to whoever is doing it, but it aint normal to everyone else.

****DISCLAIMER: no. i'm not equating homosexuals to pediphiles. don't be stupid.

I don't expect people to genuinely believe everything i do to be allowed to walk this face of the earth, but if you wanna walk the face of the earth and be my friend or in a social circle of mine at the same time-- well, then... um we're gonna have to relate.

If Com's views on homosexuality bother people, those people can't stop listening to him.

Em's misogynistic lyrics bother the hell out of me, so I didnt buy his LPs or listen to him really.

anyway, if you need a politically correct emcee you will be looking for a looooong time. the closest thing you'd find is Hammer in his "We got to pray" days, but christianity and all organized religion is the oppressor of man, so even he doesn't fit the profile.

>Yin and Yang, my friend.

we're not friends, i dont know you.

>I agree, that's foul, but again
>: what does this have

what's the core subject here? "how do you feel about common dissing homosexuals that paid to see his show?".

this is how it relates:

1.common supposedly disses gays at show.

2.PC okayplayers decide to stick up for the gay kids so they can offer their oh so intelligent and open minded points of view.

3.chocolateboywonder thinks playing the PC card and pretending to have a view on every controversial subject that passes thru these boards is annoying and decides to state so.

>Does
>this make it OK for
>every person to diss gays,
>just cos some people have
>double standards or act hypocritical
>?

not every person disses gays and no, of course it doesnt make it right. rhetorical questions are stupid-ass questions. i dont agree with homosexual lifestyles and i don't diss them. i don't agree with 9 out of 8 heterosexual lifestyles and i don't diss them either. because it's none of my fucking business.

there are several worlds of difference between knowing what you like and don't like (which, by the way, I'm not sure Common does - or will at least admit to - because of how much he's waffled on the issue of homosexuality, both in his journal and the difference between that interview he did with angiee on his site and other shit he has said), and composing and ode to why you don't like to individual people who have come to your concert.

it's for common, late lurkers, hueva..I read through all the responses thus far and these are the *props & pounds* heads to me:

#10, bigworm - get over it
#15, wormagain - catchgaysyndrome..lol
#29, mlax - this isn't a fad so self-educate so as to not perpetuate hate, fear & misunderstanding
#49, layzboi - odd sht is fodder for freestyling emcees, gays are fair game
#63, quinn - fence-sitting isn't cool for the position com claims to speak from
#69, pointfivefag - for whatever reason, com evidently is slightly insecure in his manhood
#73, spread - the bigger picture: inevitable sociological/anthropological evolution ie. population control

feel I've forgotten some..krewcial gets general props as a reasoned, seasoned voice in this thread.

most of it all ties into post 29 (mlax) anyway..KNOW THY SELF.

sincerely though, thanks to ALL for the knowledge.

as an American he has a right to say what he wants to. sorry folks that's the way of the world (c)EWF. if you don't like his sentiments don't listen to him. and what makes common different from ANY other rappers that "disses" gay people? nothing. oh, i forgot, he's conscious. well he can be "concious" but that doesn't make him perfect. nobody is gonna do everything you like (cept Stevie) so as consumers we have to make a choice about who we will support and who we won't. if someone offends you that much don't listen to them. common has never said anything i haven't heard any other rapper say.

fuck, listen to wutang and come back and scream and yell.

by the way, marshall mathers is waaaaaaay fucking worse when it comes to being an "insensitive ass"!

96. "Boycott, huh?"
In response to Reply # 95

I would hate to boycott Cornbread, but it looks like that's what I'm gonna do. I see now I have to treat him as I treat all the other rappers who say stupid shit like he did. I guess I was fooled by his "conscious/righteous" image bullshit. I really thought the Brother was different. I held on to that thought so hard I ignored the gay rapper dis on "Nag Champa" and the "circle of faggots" thing on "Dooinit"...but this incident at the show is just way too mean-spirited/bigotted/knuckleheaded for me to ingnore. If that's who Common is, I can't support him at all (which is hard b/c I love much of LWFC).

If I could return my copy of LWFC, I would. As things are, I'll just have to sell it for cash.

It's almost a compliment that Common's getting this flack about it. Y'all are right, no one (surprisingly) really hollers at cats like Eminem, ICP, Three Six Mafia, but jump all over Common on the 'gay' issue. I think it's because Common is more respected as an artist then all of them, and his words have more impact since he's not forcing controversy into it. When he did the show (I'm assuming, and the same w/lyrics on LWFC) the freestyle came straight from the heart, not to stir up controversy. Is it fair? I don't know, but once you establish that level of respect your views seem to have more weight. A whole thread about the politically incorrectness of Eminem is a pretty useless but valid cause.

And while y'all also argue with 'It's a free country, he can say what he wants' well, yeah, everyone can. Everyone's free to be as prejudiced as they like. But would you still be as defensive if you were at the show and Common picked you out and freestyled for ten minutes insulting your race/gender/sexuality with genuine disgust at you (who paid money to see him), ending with "Get out of here."

1Love,
BigPerm

I've been checking this whole thing (just sat here and read all of it), and I wanna make a few points...

1) The whole conscious thing... does "conscious" mean that you have to bend over backwards accepting everthing without having (voicing) your opinion? Does openmindedness equal not being able to stand up and say that something to you is wrong? I agree tht Com may have some issue with the whole homosexual thing, but why must he have to like it. I consider myself an evolved man of sorts; and, because of my upbringing and religious beliefs, I think that homosexuality is wrong. Lots of things are wrong; however, so it's not like I single out one particular group as opposed to another. Furthermore, it is not a tenet of my beliefs to hate or try to change anyone, love is paramount. I simply supply information on what I believe when asked, or if a positive opportunity arises. Is that not being "conscious"?

What Common did... was a reaction to set of stimuli (that may have been purposefully) set before him. Remember, y'all he was freestylin, and this was his concert. If you know the performer is already against a certain lifestyles, and you sit blatantly in front of said artist displaying said behavior... well, I think Com was within his rights to say something, just off GP that they weren't paying him no mind. Male or female, I would call out people kissing in a freestyle no doubt.

3) I don't think that Common was oppressing anyone by asking those two guys to leave. He was addressing two people that really didn't pay him any respect when you boil it all down. On a side note, I also don't think that the Gay Community should equate their struggle with the Black Community. I think that if someone decides to out themselves or remain in the closet, they still have a choice in the matter, being black affords no such choice; although, I understand why they have to (still don't mean I like it, though). But honestly, to me, it should be a moot point... everyone deserves basic rights no matter where they put whatever into whomever.

peace.

I was at the show and right where it was all happening. One white boy was hella (born and raised in SF) drunk and pushn' on everybody. Common had already said for the crowd to back up so the ladies (me) wouldn't get hurt. But the guy was on some other sh*T. He pushed the wrong nigga and a fight broke. Common walked over to the fight and was like ya'll need to quit but no.... they kept on so he started freestyle like "I ain't trying to dis but ya'll need to stop trying to kiss." I can only remember the first line. Regardless of the politically correctness of gay rights everybody knows the worst thing to be called is a fag so Common called them fags and pussy ass niggas to show them that it was stupid to be fighting. That was the tight ass freestyle and I will defend him anyday. He was not on any hate gay shit he was trying to show the stupidity of the fight. So get off his back. For real. Peace and Blessing from San Francisco and a Phat ass Common fan.

i was there.
two dudes were fighting.
comm dissed em.
called em gay.
did it tastefully.
he embarrassed the hell out of em.
what he should've done.
i was glad.
can i paraphrase???
"people say 'but comm, you supposed to be a poet'. just cuz i call these dudes gay doesn't mean i'm homophobic".
ya'll need to stop tripping on comm.
even if he called em faggots, and hated on him, and shit, that's his perogitive.
he can think whatever he wants.
either feel his shit or don't.
but lets get over this homophobic hump and put it behind us.

peace, don't trip.

who says the man is homoPHOBIC. this word implies that he's afraid, bruh just doesn't like that shit. don't say that his dislike & disgust comes from him being afraid. can't you just not like something and be totally disgusted by it? i don't like chitterlings, doesn't mean i'm chitlinphobic. all i'm saying is he's entitled to his opinion. if it hurts someone's feelings well oops.

i get sick of people putting OTHER HUMAN BEINGS on pedalstals. who said he's a perfect man? maybe he'll change his opinion in time, maybe he won't. just get off his back already damn. i want to see one person get this amped up about the ignorant shit going on in the government and in their neighbor. why dont' you put as much energy into the things you can actually change. it's easier to move a mountain than it is to change a person's opinion. so work on yourself and your place of rest before you try to change the next one.

In response to Reply # 0

I was at the Spitkicker in San Francisco over the weekend and I was witness to Common's freestyle. I have read some posts that said he was actually talking to two guys kissing, but in fact he was talking to two guys fighting. A fight broke out right in front of the stage and Com's DJ stopped the music and Com looked down to see two guys fighting over something. He said something to the effect of "the tour was about peace and people shouldnt be fighting" then he started the freestyle with "I dont like the show, and I aint tryin to diss: but i cant have two homosexuals up here trying to kiss". I guess it could be takent he wrong way, but the fact is he was just trying to clown on two guys for acting stupid at a show.

The show was amazing as well. For those of y'all who were there: how bout the Biz movin the crossfader with his gut, and throwin in some Bob Marley in the Mix.

And I had to snap on these two guys kissing in the front row. That shit
was out of pocket! I did a tight freestyle dissin them. That’s because
it’s freestyling when you really feel like you getting shit off your chest. I
aint never have that shit happen at no Common Sense show. If it was

Don't mean to add to the large number of responses, but I've got to get my words in, y'know?

I guess what bothers me is the fact that Common has a mission (so he's said) to reach children, to get people out of the box they're living in. I give him props for saying what he thinks and all that, but the truth is... well, I sincerely hope Common doesn't reach TOO many children... because we've lived in an intolerant society for far too long. The guy was on Hip Hop For Respect... I'm not asking him to be mad friendly, all supporting homosexual rights and shit, but don't you think he could show a little respect?

And the comparison to Eminem... well, Eminem is treated as a satire, a parody, something to poke and laugh at. Is it disgusting, hell yeah... but people don't listen to Eminem in order to be enlightened, in order to get perspective... this has been Common's ticket to fame, his willingness to talk about more than pimpin and whatever. He's got to expect (and he deserves) flack for saying what he says...

More than anything, I'm disappointed, that's all.

Damn people, just by reading this I see that we are all, well maybe not all, have some sense of where are beliefs are....but, once again I see a double standard.
Now, it was explained to me and I understand the term "GAY" to describe the lifestyle, sexual orientation and/or cultural chioce (whatever or however you want to believe it is) of men, while the term "LESBIAN" is meant to describe the lifestyle, sexual orientation and/or cultural chioce (whatever or however you want to belive it is) of two women.
As I analyze the statement or 2nd hand statement of Common's, I see that however you want to take his comment or the tone thereof, it is my understanding that he was talking about men.
OK, now to the point ladies and gentlemen...everyone is all willy nilly because he's was talking about two men. Now, if he were talking about two women, not only would everyone not have a problem with it, they would have wanted the two women to get on stage and slob each other down. You can take my comment as pseuo-feminist or whatever, but one of you said it yourself, however jokinly, that if it were women, there wouldn't have been a problem.
As for Eminem, of course, there's another double standard, most of all it's matter of discrimination. We all know that we live in a society that turns a blind eye to the oppression of our black borthers, so why are you surprised that Eminem can display his homophobia without discourse from such organizations as G.L.A.A.D.? Moreover, the funny part is that the public has been sleeping on the beautiful music of Common and other artist who fall under the category of T.H.E.M. (as uest would say it), but all of a sudden he's saying something bad about gay MEN(this is the operative word). No matter how much he has uplifted black women through his work...that's besides the societal point. But when Eminem came on the scene and even when he released his new album, no one...i mean no one, asked him to apologize for his lyrics about violence against women. Don't get me wrong, I know some of you respect this man, just cause of his "3rd leg" status, and yes, I understand that he is comminucating to the world what alot of men be thinking in their minds about their own girlfriends in those times of trouble (this was his explaination of his lyrics), but do we draw the line at the actual sound of a woman gurgling blood from having her throat slit on Eminem's album or are we going to keep our minds narrowed?

Dice Raw: "Reclaiming the Dead", September 19, 2000" Your just going to have to wait.

The simple shut doors and screams inside of my head. It wd be difficult. To make such a straightforward document of my life. Because in fact sometimes I yet cannot face understanding that my life has been a roll of minutes. A series of absolutely connected images, being born and passing almost at the same time. I think my life an incredible maze and blotch of shadows, circuses, divas, and floats. Much sadness. Much hapiness. Mostly expectation and desire. And yet it is all here in me to be revealed reunderstood. (Amiri Baraka..."6 Persons", I)

The brutal truth is that the bulk of white people in America never had any interest in educating black people, except as this could serve white purposes. It is not the black child's language that is in question, it is not his language that is despised: It is his experience. A child cannot be taught by anyone who despises him, and a child cannot afford to be fooled. A child cannot be taught by anyone whose demand, essentially, is that the child repudiate his experience, and all that gives him sustenance, and enter a limbo in which he will no longer be black, and in which he knows that he can never become white. Black people have lost too black children that way. (James Baldwin)

STILLWATERS:
GURL, YOU BETTA REGULATE! you basically summed up THE TRUTH of this whole post. i spoke my piece on the subject and STILL maintain what i posted.

it seems like folk want to whine and moan cause Common said somethings they didn't like. i guess people forget that common is a HUMAN BEING, not a GOD--hes human. he makes mistakes. yea, what he said about gay men was faulty (what he was about lesbians, no matter WHAT straight men say, is fucked up in itself AND a vicious double standard at that) and FLAT OUT WRONG..but, it IS his opinion and for better or for worse, we have to respect that.

i'm sorry, but i'm NOT going to boycott the brotha cause of his viewpoints. he isn't saying that to me....people need to realize that there still IS a stigma on homosexuality. as evidenced by some members on this board (quez/chocolateboywonder, etc.) folk are extremely intolerant of folks who aren't straight or AREN'T IN DENIAL. igorance is bliss these days, and you have to realize that not everyone is going to make an effort to dialogue with u about sexuality or even MAKE a concerted effort to speak to you in a civil manner on it. but, that's me...i could care less what folk like quez and half the people who posted think of what or WHO i'm doing behind closed doors...sexuality is such a MINUTE part of who i am..it's very clear that THE FOLK I NAMED (and in general) seem more hard pressed on staying clear of gay people than just up and admitting they're ignorant. it's that simple....
but stillwaters, u keep tellin the truth gurl! it's realness like thisthat keeps the channels open for communication between ALL to understand life and how we as human beings don't share a MONOLITHIC view on it.

Ryan

I didn't see it, but I would like to comment on this topic. If you read Com's bio, it says he's not homophobic. I mean if I saw two niggas kissing in the crowd while I was on the stage rapping, I'll talk about them too. You tripping like the shit is a normal thing. You don't see niggas kissing on the reg. I don't know about you, but I don't. When you freestyle, you freestyle off the top. Whatever comes out, comes out. Personally, I don't have anything against gays, but just like you said, "Keep it to yourself".

I recently heard about this occurence too. It really changed my perception of Common. How can someone who preaches educating yourself and all that stuff be so ignorant. How can an artist who comes off as being so secure in his manhood allow two human beings expressing themselves to make him feel so uncomfortable. All that talk about loving your sisters and brothers.... what about the millions of black gay men? Does their sexuality make them any less your brother? If your real brother was gay, would you abandon him too. I can't believe that in the year 2000 we could have someone as celebrated as Common being so ignorant. Thinking a man is any less human because of his sexual orientation is completely neanderthal. That is exactly the kind of thinking that allowed the white men of colonial America to rationalize taking human beings from Africa, packing thousands of them on a ship like cattle, robbing them of their humanity, and forcing them to do whatever they said. That kind of thinking allowed for rape of your ancestors... the queens you praise. And it is that kind of thinking that allows for the overlooking of the murder of contemporaries like Diallo. Bigotry is bigotry and ignorance is ignorance. You can't justify it because seeing an expression of it makes you uncomfortable. Did you think it was okay for slave owners to lynch a black man because the sight of him made them uncomfortable. Think about it! And start educating yourself!

180. "Back up off him!!"
In response to Reply # 178

See, this is exactly what I heard Common say. He said that he didn't want people to see him as "Mr. Righteous" all the time. He is not a one-dimensional man and not always the good-guy rapper. He has many different sides to his personality. He said it himself: "Y'know, I'm striving to be a good person and striving towards perfection, but there's other sides to me...Just show the different sides to keep balance. If you're doing good things, and you're having spiritual sessions with people, that don't mean you don't go out with and enjoy yourself with your lady, or even with a lady friend, man. Life is balance."

The way people speak of the event, it seems as though he is an inconsiderate and ignorant MC. It was a freestyle, just a creative expression and it is unfair for people to limit his expression and see everything so one-sided. It's not so black and white. There's more color in the scene and not such a literal meaning to it all. Like all of us, he is growing and still learning; he should be able to have the freedom to do say he feels. (See Ist Amendment)

I understand that gays may be tired of being harassed and were especially offended by the commonts coming from Common, but back the FUCK up for a minute and stop being such hardasses. True, I do not know how it feels to be gay and persecuted, but calm the fuck down. I believe that I will not see total acceptance of gays in my lifetime, but as homosexuals, you need to keep your head up and not let a couple verbal daggers kill you pride.

It's all a matter of free speech. We may not always like what comes out, but he is a grown-ass man, and he can say what he wants. It's possible for the KKK to march down the street, or for people to burn flags or whatever, then why is Common being persecuted for every anti-gay comment he makes.

Me personally I don't like that ish either, but I may just joke about it in small circles instead of at a sold out concert. But that's his choice, it is HIS concert! And plus anybody that listens to Common knows his feelings about the subject, so obviously they're not too offended if they're at a show. I'm not saying it's right...but I understand.

Okay, so are you saying that you condone the actions of the KKK? Just because its legal doesn't mean that its right. Cops got away with killing Diallo... LAPD with beating Rodney King... does that mean its okay. I think its totally fine for Common to have his beliefs and such... but I think as an artist, he should be responsible for how he expresses them. If a white artist sang about killing all blacks, would it be acceptable because they were "just expressing how they feel". I am just trying to draw the parellelism. I want artist... especially minority artist to understand that prejudice and hate is wrong... Someone like Commone ridiculing a gay couple is just as bad as someone calling him a nigger. Its wrong because it dehumanizes the victim for no reason. Its says that you are less human or less valuable because of your color... or your sexual orientation. Not because of anything that has to do with merit. The Catholic church has decided to accept their gay children because they realized that we should love all of God's children. I would hope that Com is at least as conscious as the Catholic church!

I'm not condoning the KKK or the NYPD, or anyone else who does injustice. But what I am tired of is the gay rights struggle being compared to the plight of blacks in America. I believe that your sexual orientation is a choice. (and I can break it down religiously, scientifically or any other way you want it.) I didn't have a choice to be born black, I was just put in this jungle and told to survive the best that I can.

I'm not condoning any type of discrimination, but then again we have to be careful when we start to say what's right and wrong concerning free speech. Don't forget that the same laws that allow the KKK to march in the street, are the same ones that allow us to march in protest over injustices such as Diallo and King.

And then my other point about Common. Unless the couple just by chance went to a concert and had never heard Common's music(which is unlikely), I'm sure they knew his position on homosexuality. That was their choice. Now I'm not saying what he did was right, But I'm not going to a David Duke convention and be surprised if I hear the word "Nigger" 2 or 3 times. If you don't like it, don't support it.

I understand completely what you're saying. People here are all like "it's wrong and ignorant for him to put down a group of people....he needs to watch what he says as an artist....for someone that talks about spirituality and educating oneself, he really aimed low...." OH PLEASE. Everyone is ready to defend gays, yet ready to show the same kind of prejudice that many show gays in this country. Look at yourselves. The way that this is going, I'm looking out for an "Anti-Common" movement and a boycott of his album and concerts. You are rising up against him and becoming worse than those who dislike you.

188. "The 'Telephone Operator' Effect"
In response to Reply # 0

Remember that school-yard game, "Telephone Operator"? If you don't, let me refresh your memory: The telephone operator (the first kid) would whisper a message in a circle of ( or group) of kids and the next kid would pass it on, and so on...and by the time the message reached the end of that circle it was totally screwed up?!

Please excuse my rambling--I'm all nostalgic at this point because this forum has reminded me SO MUCH of that childhood game.

I was at Maritime Hall when this alleged incident took place. There was tons of pushing & shoving going on prior to Common’s poetic interlude. The section where the gay guys were making out--which was off to the right side of the stage—competed with Common himself for audience attention.. There had been a small series of fights breaking out in that section throughout the show and security had to intervene. That is what initially drew Common’s attention and why he felt compelled to say something. The guys were very aggressive in their PDA and it looked like a fight from where I stood (which was not far away) so immediately following his “Keep the Peace,” statement, Common got a little salty with the two guys (who had the crowd in a slight uproar themselves).

Yes, Common expressed his disdain for their act (but they had taken it a bit too far). He did not, however, condemn the two for their sexual orientation, he just made it known (to quote him loosely) “that it ain’t cool” while he’s standing on the stage. Basically it was more of a “Get A Room,” type of thing which I’m sure he would have said if a man and woman were doing the same thing (to the degree that the 2 guys were).

It’s funny to see people up in arms over something that they have NO firsthand knowledge of. It is very interesting how SOME folks could turn their backs on one of their “favorite” artist over HEARSAY. I am a black woman and I don’t agree with his frequent use of the N word, but I’m not loosing any sleep over it. I am, however, fighting to make a difference in those things that I don’t agree with…

In a circle of faggots your name is mentioned - Common dissing some rapper on "Dooinit"

It's rumors of gay MCs/Just don't come around me with it/You rockin hickies/Don't let me find out he did it - Common expressing his disdain for gay rappers (and by extension - homosexuality in general) on "Nag Champa"

These are examples of his homophobia on wax. I chose to ignore them before b/c...well b/c I was being wishy-washy.

But then I heard about this incident. It may or may not have happened, but that doesn't matter. The homophobia in his RHYMES bothers me. These rumors only reminded me of the truth - that I can't support an artist who spits shit like this.

198. "ThanxHOT/the Queer Question"
In response to Reply # 193

thank you Hot (seriously) for resubstantiating the already painfully obvious.

I myself am really kinda done with the whole notion of not supporting Common as an individual artist because of his politic. He's kind of become a symbol of the hypocritical bullshit endemic to a hip-hop culture that so vociferously prides itself as a bastion of truth, verity and...

...."realness"(I usually know i'm about to hear a buncha bullshit when someone insists upon using that phrase)

I in no way expect Com (and dont give a shit)
to embrace my queerness, in all of its manifestations, as a part of his politic or lifestyle or vision of whatever.

I do find it interseting that, from my years of scene-stering in hip hop that:

1) Misogyny, eroto-homo-bi-trans-phobia,sexism, classism, etc. is generally tolerated (and excuses made for it) from so-called "progressive" or "conscious" MC's or groups

Ex: Public Enemy's virulent homophobia
("the G that Killed Me" etc.) or

Arrested Development's strident brand of
"Im the Good Afrikan in the Dashiki/Youre the bad Nigga with a 40 in your back pocket" class-stratification

while the same is vilified when it comes from
"gangsta" or "hardcore" MC's
("We expect those stupid country gold teeth wearin-n-helicopter flyin mofos to be on some bullshit! they cant help theyself!")

and

2)That this is only an issue because there arent any *nationally prominent* gay/lesbian/bi/trans/fetish MC's who are OUT(not yet, but soon) and articulating their lives in rhymes.

AGAIN , what happens when an MC says to Common (or anyone else for that matter)...

"YES,YES In a CIRCLE of FAGGOTS , my name is mentioned HUNDREDS of times,I tonguekiss boys, I suck dick, and im PROUD of that,
and FUCK YOU or anybody else who has a problem with it!"

How dope are you going to be, Scared of Faggot MCs, when the Faggots claim their birthright, when they come with skills, when they break your shit off in a cypher (they already have, you just didnt know it was them )

who you gonna dis? who will be the Nigger below you on the hip hop social totem pole?
where will you go when there is no more
Old Straight Black Boys Club Network for you to belong to, or when people who will never belong cease using membership in it as a barometer of their worth as a human beings?

The women arent taking it anymore. The white boys
have come for theirs.

where will you go?
who will you be *doper than* then?
who will become the epitome of wack?

I sincerely hope that anyone reading this understands that I posit the above as *my* opinions and observations only. But I do *know*
from experience that

-prejudice is usually UNILATERAL
-fear of the unknown or different or uncontrollable is fear all the same
meaning..
a Homophobe will usually also be
ageist/classist/sexist/racist etc.
on some level or other. think about it. and watch.

whatcha gonna do/when they come for you?!
