Happy Belated Birthday ?uestlove,
I was about to not post here, because I was thinking to myself, "Like he REALLY is going to read damn near 200 messages of people saying happy birthday? PLEASE!" Today I was reading a little more of the OkayPlayer Diary though, and I was just so moved. This site is like...amazing. I have NEVER heard of celebrities straight reaching out to their supporters like this. NEVER. I was reading the Diaries today, and even re-reading some of your posts, and I asked myself, "Who is he talking to here?" Then I thought, "He is talking to me. He is talking to my co-workers. He is talking to every person whoever heard a Roots tune and was like, 'Yo that's DOPE!', to every fanatic, who would spend some inordinate amount of time and money just to be at the same place and time as a Roots member." I am just so amazed by that. I mean, I'm used to hearing stories of Aretha Franklin flippin' the fuck out because barbecue chicken was not on the set of her 'A Rose Is Still A Rose' video. I'm used to the media swearing to us that Michael Jordan acted like a prima donna towards the other Bulls. But you, through this website alone, have made it CRYSTAL CLEAR that y'all don't "carry yours like 'dat". I just think that sets an outstanding example of what so-called stars are really supposed to be about. I mean, you act like you are just some regular person, who happens to be some sort of musical, and other-stuff-too kind of genius, walking out amongst the rest of us. NOT~! But, then again, maybe so? At any rate, I just wanted to thank you. I am not even a 'Roots Head' like probably 90% of the people on this board are, and I don't know every single song, every single album, all the members' mamas' maiden names, the date y'all lost y'all's virginity, and what-have-you. But I can tell you that the music moves me. Somewhere deep. Each time I hear a song I haven't heard before, I'm opened up a little more. It's like, the world is a different place after the experience. Except for D'Angelo, Common, and the newly crowned Q. Mackadilla, no other modern artist has affected me with their craft in that way. I mean good grief, I only thought Hendrix, Miles, 'Trane and Prince were the only ones who could create ascension through their music like that anyway. You're onto something though. I'm not sure if anyone thanked you for it, so I figured I would. The work that had to go into organizing all those Blackfolk for the OK tour had to be difficult enough, challenging at best, but then to come to a computer and reach out to friends(Prince calls us friends, since fan is short for fanatic, and sounds derogatory)at the wee hours of the morning after a set, I mean that is just so revolutionary! Only an Aquarius could think to do something like that. So from one to another, happy belated Birthday, thanks for the diaries, and this website, and know that your jam sessions with D'Angelo played on 89.3 in the ATL on the week-ends are really on some Ethereal-Level-type-shit.
peace,
ya Setshego February 3rd
