if haven't read the latest Jazzy Journal entry, please do so. bascially there's a rumor going around that Erykah Badu is planning a "Black Sisterhood Tour". the tour would include, Erykah, Sunshine Anderson, Macy Gray and Jill Scott (if she agrees to do it, c the journal entry). now of course, if u've ever been 2 the Black Lily b4, u would definitely find this interesting if not slightly disturbing. obviously, Merc thought so or she wouldn't have wrote about it the journal. basically, the idea and name of the tour is a little 2 closely related to the Black Lily. what makes it even more interesting is that all of those artists (w/ the exception of Sunshine Anderson) have performed at the Black Lily more than once. so basically, i wanna get everyone's opinion on this. is this a rip off or just a coincidence? would u go c the tour? do u think it would b different if it were a Black Lily Tour and it included those artist mentioned as well as the Lily regulars (Jazzies, Flo Brown, Jag, 3 7000 9, Kindred)? and what about Black Lily, isn't that a spin off of the Lilth Fair name? what do the Roots and other OkayArtist feel about this, having not only worked w/ both the Lily fam and those artists, but being friends as well? for the record, i love the Black Lily showcase i can't wait till it comes back 2 nyc area. just want 2 know what u all think about this.

black is black. we're all black people. whether we be a lily, a part of a sisterhood, a part of a panther party, a part of men united, blackwhatthefuckever....etc. u can't put a copyright on the "black" moniker!..... just as you couldn't put one on the term "african american", white, indian, chinese, spanish....it's just preposterous. and the words "black sisterhood" in no way shape or form conjure up the thought of the "black lily" to me. outside of okayplayers, philadelphians and people in the music industry, i don't know of anyone that's even heard of black lily....and i know alot of mufuckas. yes, it's a part of a movement that the jazzy's and others have probably busted their asses to bring to the forefront......but i do not believe that an established artist like erykah has any need to blatanly bite her sisters. it makes no sense. and even if she did is it gonna make the black lily and less "black"? would the jazzies feel better if they were asked to be on the tour? would that make it okay? i mean if u "ask" me i think it's called "reaching".

there was a reason for even the lilith fairs & the lilys to be begat in the first place...when u have male artists bein able to secure venues of the sheer strength of their reputations & their jock straps & women looked upon as only "glad-to-be-here" openin acts or scantily clad background singers...necessity becomes the grandmammy of invention

well, if u actually read the entry, then maybe u'd get more of an idea what the Jazzies r talking about. is it a lot of "women drama" as some folks have put it? maybe. but u have 2 at least admit that besides the word Black in the names, it does sound quite similar. Black Lily = a black women in music series. Erykah has been 2 and performed at Black Lily. is it a business? yes, of course it is. is it about money? yes, more definitely. r Jill, Erykah and Macy bigger names than Jazzyfatnastess, Jag and Flo Brown? of course they r. it just sounds weird is all. and it's still a rumor. who knows, Erykah might actually do the tour and she might invite Mercedes and Tracey 2 perform on the tour. then again, the tour may never come about. so we can't really say. but still, there r valid points brought up.

I have to thank everyone for sharing their views on this topic. Our journals are a place to share our thoughts and feelings. I don't expect for everyone or anyone to agree with what I'm saying. I simply share my point of view. I don't expect people to not buy tickets to see a concert starring, Erykah, Jill, Macy, Sunshine Anderson, etc. That was not the point I made.

I never once said don't support the "Black Sisterhood Tour" I just think they should call it something else. That's what I think. And I'll stand by that. As far as the whole Lilith Fair thing. It's a valid point. I responded to that issue in detail in today's journal. I never once called Erykah a biter. I read that on these posts. I didn't bring this issue to the boards, someone else did.

As far as this just being drama, well let me tell you this is definitely about business, something I also addressed in detail. For the record, I learned of these plans from multiple, reliable sources so I felt very comfortable in writing about it. The issue struck a chord in me, it moved me to write. This isn't the first time I've brought up delicate topics and it won't be the last. I apologize if that's too much for some people but it's a journal, honesty is the point of the whole thing.

I see most people are strongly against my point of view. I hope you at least read the entries and aren't just basing your opinions on those of other people. Once again, thanks for sharing.

Normally I agree with Mercedes' insights on the industry, but on this point, i must disagree. Sister, linking the idea of "Black Sisterhood" with "Black Lily" is a stretch. The tour involves black women, sisters, coming together to go on tour. Now, if a bunch of white women went on the "Black Sisterhood" tour, maybe I would share your suspicions (because what do white women have to do with 'black sisterhood"?), but these are black women. Surely you didn't think the concept of black women touring together would begin and end with the Lily, did you?

I do not think Erykah took your concept at all...sisterhood is something that should be encouraged in all of its forms.

As a proactive solution, I suggest you connect with Sister Erykah to co-promote between the Black Sisterhood tour and the Black Lily, perhaps with a Black Lily second stage. Or by having Black Lily regulars be opening acts.
