"I'm w/ Kweli on this one"

I got into it with Wreck about Hype Williams a while back. As much as people wanna hate on Hype now-a-days, he along with Puffy have made significant impacts in their industries single handedly. "Hype" is anotha post for anotha day. Since things go in cylces... it's time to hate. When ya get too big, we need a victim; Hammer, Hype, now Puffy.

I'm with Talib Kweli on this one about Puffy. You can hear it in his own words (if you keep it 'REAL' like Ms.Cleo), or read the transcription (if you're not Bling-Blingn' w/ a shinny suit)

"I give him respect. I really and truly do. I give him respect. He knows what the fuck he’s doin. The reason I give Puff respect is because when I was coming up in this shit, when I was working in the streets, this nigga Puff was working at Uptown on some like, “I’m trying to do some real hip-hop. I’m trying to take this to the next level. I’m trying to do Craig Mack, I’m trying to do Biggie, I’m trying to do Total, I’m tryin to bring this to the street level where niggas on the street can respect and appreciate this shit”. My experience with him, is him going to the underground open mics, him going to the Lyricists Lounge, him doin that shit. Now when he started making money, he started acting like he was making money. Which a lotta niggas tend to do, and he got caught up in that. I saw that when he started going to the Hamptons’ and all, he got caught up in it, it fucked him up. I still give him respect ‘cause I’ve seen the work he put in. Niggas don’t see the work. Come 94, up to 94, that nigga was considered underground hip-hop. Up to 94-95 he started switching up. But, he used to be at all the underground spots, watching and paying attention, and he knew how to make records. There was a time in New York where from midnight to two in the morning, aint nothing but records that Puff had something to do with. That’s incredible. From midnight til two in the morning, if you had a party, it aint nothing but shit that he had something to do with, whether it was a Gina Thompson remix, or a Biggie record, a Craig Mack record, whatever it is, Puff had his name on it".

Yeah Kwa, I'm with you on this one! He was RUNNIN shit and we all rocked with him. But... things go in cycles...

but i was through with that dude on any serious level when he did what he did to "the message". no amount of "he used to do this" and "he started out like that" can explain what the hell he was thinkin when he decided to do that fucked up cover. there might be room for argument if he just jacked the beat...but he wiped his ass with the chorus too. he did a lot of shit for hip hop...but he a did a lot a shit to hip-hop too.

in the lesson this shit gets brought up now and again, I think if you're gonna appreciate hip hop for all it's glitches and glory, you gotta respect puff and hype...hype brought the hip hop video to another level...puff brought emcees up and then made party jams...

but i do think he started to wear his money on his shirt sleeve like kwa said..and that can always turn a few cheeks or two...

Much love,
Kyle

i give the guy any black man props for making his way legally. but i don't HAVE to respect him or Hype. i'm a creative person and i respect the creative process. to me, both of these guys have shown a complete and total lack of creativity. they perpetuate the money-hungry ultra-consumer attitude that keeps black neighborhoods in check cashing places. but for me the bottom line is that i think Puffy's music is corny and Hype's videos suck.

I just wanna know how many of the "real hip-hoppers" out there got a shout out on One For All and were on the Midnight Marauders album cover.

Kweli has a funny way of talking though, but it's dope.

I guess that's the point of this whole post. But don't you think it's funny how on the Sway and Tech album they were talking about shinny suit sindrome and catchy hooks and so on...Now Sway is all glad that Puffy came out innocent and all happy reporting him and backing him up. Shouldn't Sway feel a little bit of shame inside for doing that? I know Puffy wasn't in court for putting out catchy hooks and I guess Sway was just sticking up for stars who get taken advantage of by people who sue the living hell out of them. Johnny Cochran will have that effect on you!!!

You could also say that Sway is fake for "selling out" on MTV. The bottom line is, we all want to have money, I don't care how underground you claim to be. It is what we want to do with the money once we get it that makes it fake. Do we want to set up foundations for those that are underprivileged and invest our money, or do we want to buy eight cars and twenty houses?

& I ain't gonna front like I was ALWAYS into undaground at the open mic joints held in New York (cuz I'm in NU Jerz), like at the classic WETLANDS and ANYWHERE the lyricist's lounge was held, (we talking my junior high to high school years 1989-beyond),
but the first time I actually heard of Puff was on the news during the time of, I think it was the tragic City College stomping incident in the early 90's, in which he was organizing some type of party. i was watching channel 4 NBC news and they were hating on him like he ACTUALLY INCITED PEOPLE TO RUN OUT RIOTING instead of hold some sort of neighborhood event.

He didn't start LARGE. He was an Uptown records INTERN. He prolly didn't even get paid for the street team type shit.

I read up on Puf. People need to look at his days in Howard U when he owned and operated a taxi service as a side hustle. He and Derrick "D-Dot" Angelettie wwere involved in this lil' rap group. I think he managed it or sumthin'. To put
it short THE BRUTHA PAID MANY YEARS OF DUES.

& YES he did get caught up in the lime & media hype.

Why not...

Not only did he stay on in the clubs from midnight to like 2 BUT he (along with Biggy) made the idea of rap entertainers actually getting paid (reimbursed for their services) instead of doin it for JUST love an adopted philosophy.

He DID change the game. Whether you want to admit or not.

PS You never heard me say it was for the better.........

I always had beef with puff the producer not puff the man. I mean short of bveing on some swole head shit, the man found mary, biggie, craig mac, jodeci, heavy d.....the list of talent he put together while at up town and at badboy is incredible....he need to get shine for that. As an emcees he's garbagfe, and thats no hating, so much as it is a man who cant spit with out a talented team of ghostwriters. As a producer he's garbage, because he lives and dies by samples. As a man, I dont respect anyone who allowas their ego to run freely completely unchecked. there is still something to be said for Humility, and every attempt he makes at music comes of trite predictable and cliched. His tribute to his best friend, while touching to pop fans and readers of entertainment weekly, was a) the first and only big record of Sauce moneys career, and two completely demeaned in message and music by his inability to recognize his own lack of musical talent. If Quincy Jones lost his best friend would Q, hire a ghjost writer and spit on the track, or would he honor their memory with some real cats that new him spiiting about him in their own words.....I guess the song the lox did (sheik ripped one of the illest verses of all time) was his real tribute and the sting/faith/sauce joint was the capitalist egitist coming to the surface again....

I will admit that when Puff first hit the scene, I was a fan because of the work he did with Mary, Jodeci, Biggie, etc. I thought it was fly how the "Be Happy" Remix with Keith Murray rocked the same sample as Bitties In The BK Lounge (Part 3 - Maseo's Part). But I agree that the money has ruined him. I like another OK post-er here (I forgot who it was) thought it was a cardinal sin when he called himself "doing a remake" of The Message. And P.E. 2000...okay I won't say anything.

BUT, I strongly disagree with bignick...Hype Williams remains one of the best directors. Understand the business...when you see Hype do a "standard" video, it's usually for a new artist, or a returning artist trying to start or revive a sorry career. Kelis' video for Caught Out There...tight. Busta's video for Fire...blazin' (no pun intended...even though the song was wack). And even though Belly had sort of a weak script, it was well directed (except for the scene with DMX and Benjamin Chavis where you can SEE the camera).

gREG bASS (now known as datcatdeycalltREBLEFREE)
Former Questo-Endorsed Player Of The Week...

P.S. - I'm not trying to start no shit but I thought Puff was trying to get back at Mos & Kweli for "Childern's Story" when he made that WEAK remix for Total's Sittin' At Home using the beat from Definition. Any thoughts?

Puff (P.Diddy, whatever) is not a great rapper, but he makes catchy, very danceable songs. Primo samples a lot, don't see ya'll hatin' him. I will admit his subject matter can be a bit flossy at times. "Let's Get It" is a hot song, though. Hype seems to be in a formula, now. "What's It Gonna Be" was cool, and I kinda liked "Lay Low" by Snoop, but I'd rather see videos by his protege, Little X.

What up peoples, Uniquethoughtt drop'n dimes.

Artists have to be carefull of what they do and say, because whether it's 2 people or 2 million you're gonna have someone fallow'n ya say'n; yeah, I like the way he used that sample, I like how he used that wordplay, that beat was hot how he put 2 and 2 2gether. So artists are constantly shaping the concious state of hiphop. (Hopefully one day I'll reach that point).
What's the point? Puffy should have stuck to produce'n, he's not an artist.
peace, unique
