"Com sells 670,000"

well, 670,000 in the U.S., that is (I'm sure he sold a bunch more overseas). Big up, Cornbread!!! The info came from the Billboard story below...

(next time, hope you snag that platinum plaque, Big Com...you deserve it)

Billboard Bits: Pearl Jam, Common, Ween

Rapper Common is back in the studio recording the follow-up to last year's MCA set "Like Water for Chocolate." The as-yet-untitled album is tentatively scheduled for a November release, according to an MCA spokesperson.

There's no word yet on who Common will be collaborating with, but his official Web site reports that the rapper will be recording some tracks with Shaquille O'Neal for the basketball star's forthcoming release.

"Like Water for Chocolate" peaked at No. 16 on The Billboard
200, and has sold 670,000 copies in the U.S., according to
SoundScan. It featured the R&B/hip-hop airplay hits "The
Light" and "The 6th Sense."

what do you mean "that's all"?

there were probably less than 15 rap records that year that sold as much.

and Com only had one hit single and isn't affiliated with any multi-platinum "big dogs" like Ruff Ryders or Roc-a-Fella.

I'd say it's DAMN GOOD to go from selling an average of around 150,000 a record to 670,000.

Sheesh.

Maybe next time around he'll got platinum. All too often we see garbage albums going 2X and 3X and it should only be fair that Com atleast go plat. About redman going platinum it was his first time, and he's someone else that deserved it. Artist like these put in mad work and itz about time the get some recognition. A lil' MTV exposure helps everyone.

>670k is half of everybody logged
>in on this site.

this site gets 300,000 hits. That doesn't mean there are 300,000 people logged in with screen names.

Besides that, you are assuming even the people who come here are Common fans. Some are D'Angelo fans strictly. And a lot of folks who were Com fans post-LWFC didn't like the change in sonic direction (i.e. the "bring back NO I.D." coalition).

>He should of done better being
>red went plat off doc2000

Red is part of the Def Jam machine. Red had club hits. Red had several gold albums before Doc's the Name and only added to his built-in fan base. Com, by contrast, did not have club hits and never had anywhere NEAR a gold album pre-LWFC. These situations (Red to Com) aren't analogous.

>and that wasn't as tight as
>comm

It's not about dopeness nowadays as far as sales are concerned. Sure, Aceyalone is a doper emcee than Jermaine Dupri. Whose solo album do you think sold more? It's about hits, marketing, etc.

>nop doubt i glad he reached
>this mark but damn
>this is one of those albums

next album...

MCA seems behind him...he sold a solid 670,000 and he's been touring heavily. I think he's going to hit the one mill next album if his lead single has what it needs (and I know Quest knows the "secret single sauce" now).

I'm sure he sold a million worldwide, but that's not how it works in terms of getting a platinum plaque stateside. He has to sell a million copies _in the US_ to get his plaque here. He might have gone gold in one of the European territories (in a lot of countries, selling 50,000 is gold).

No doubt, Comm went 2x platnium in my heart. I wish I had heard of him before Like Water For Choclate, however. Anyway, I hope the next album will be even better than Like Water.. whatever it's gonna be called. I'm also sure he will go platnium for real this time. It puts a smile on my face to see dope emcees sell good numbers without having "to lose self in trying to win fans over" (see- "Nag Champa")

For real 670,000 is a big disappointment. Think Jill Scott's joint went platinum without the benefit of a single that did as well as "The Light". MCA dropped the ball by waiting too long to follow up "The Light" with another single, and then releasing that bullshit, happy ass GETO Heaven Re-mix featuring Macy Gray. Obviously that was an attempt to appeal to the MTV crossover audience, but the heads, and radio didn't give a damn about it.

Going gold means nothing these days, Comm went gold off the strength of "The Light", period, MCA should have came with the fire after that. Also how come Com couldn't see that the re-mix to GETO Heaven was straight wack!!! It was one of my favorites on the albums, now everytime the BS comes on the VH1 Soul Channel, I turn.

Bottomline, Com should have been platinum. But him going gold simply means that he probably won't get dropped from the label, and we can expect another album in the near future. Don't expect platinum though, judging by the success (or lack thereof) of "Things Fall Apart", it's obvious that MCA has no clue how to promote progressive hip-hop.

Hey I feel you SirLau , then could you please stop these so-called progressive artists from coming here interested in doing business with MCA. Too late on Blackalicious though, you should have talked to then before they came here. I tried to warn them. Also when you see Common, tell him to squash that sickening positivity that he always has and to tell him that his last project was an unfulfilled failure.
Damn, it took Def Jam many years & albums before they got Redman platinum. Maybe will get it on the 2nd Common album we work.

It seems you & I have some work to do.

I'd say most rappers fall victom to Napster. Since napster, I've bought very few cd's b/c theres usually only 1-4 good tracks on them, plus bullsh*t skits.

Okayartists, Neptunes, J-Dilla, Hi Tek, Mos Def suffer too, most of y'all already had that sh*t b/f it dropped. Basically, anyone who's not getting burn on TRL will significantly lose out on record sales. Most high school, college kids, young adults who got access to the nets, r downloading the tracks they like & f*ck a soundscan.

Spoken like a true label guy. Even you know that ?estlove isn't even happy with the way you promoted TFA. And by the way I did my part, even though I got several copies of both TFA and LWFC for free, I went out and bought two copies of each. One for me and one as a gift to a friend. So as a fan, and supporter of positive hip-hop, I did my job. Actually I probably did more than the average fan. But let's be real, LG, Geto Heaven Re-mix was wack. That's why it didn't do well, and why MCA stopped pushing the album, even though the adds kept billing it as "soon to be platinum". And if I did see Common I would tell him that I wasn't feeling the re-mix that's what a true fan does. But thanks for your commentary, you know I've been doing my job as a fan of hip-hop since '84, and I haven't received one check...

Yo honestly if you ask Common I don't think he wants to go platnium. Once you go platnium you have to change your whole style, and Com is not for that. Most emcees that don't go platnium stay true to emcee and not selling records just to sell them. Just look at most of the platnium emcees that weren't platnium they're first CD it was Classic( illmatic, Reasonable Doubt, etc.)

Trust me bro, Common wants to go platinum. "I'd be lyin' if I said I didn't wanna make millions" - the 6th Sense. Don't you think this somewhat softer album shows that Common wanted more mainstream acceptance? Quite honestly, I'm not mad at the product, with the exception of the Geto Heaven re-mix, but mostly I think MCA did a poor job capitalizing on the momentum of "The Light". Just as they did when they didn't come correct with "The Roots" after the success of "You Got Me". Put it like this, Mos Def probably sold more units than Common, without the benefit of a mjor record label or a hit single.

but mostly I think MCA
>did a poor job
>capitalizing on the momentum of
>"The Light".
Did it ever dawn on you that it took "the Light" to get to that level? If he didn't get to "the Light" he wouldn't have gone gold on NO label. And by the way you didn't touch my Redman analogy from earlier in the thread.
Look at the game, the power house label Interscope pushed the HELL out of the Black Eye Peas "hey DJ" single (MAJOR MTV) and their album but the bottom line is consumers wasn't feelin it. Sh*t they only sold 154,000 units with a major label push.

Just as
>they did when they didn't
>come correct with "The Roots"
>after the success of "You
>Got Me".
What was the obvious 2nd single RADIO cut from TFA? I guess my version of the album didn't have that BIG 2nd single that your copy has.

Put it like
>this, Mos Def probably sold
>more units than Common
Do your homework.....
LWFC=671,540 units scanned
BOBS=540,292

Dawg, look at the game......the hip-hop artists we like don't fit into the stereotypical mainstream sh*t that consumers buy. It takes hitz to get plaques for our underdog rap heroes.
I've stated this before:
no hits = no plaque
one hit = gold plaque
consecutive hits = platinum
w/Dr. Dre = platinum

I'm really pullin for okay hip-hop artists to have back to back monster hits (not with just us but with the bulk of the buying public) so we can get the platinum.

And I've been broke on the road with Common on the Best of the Underground tour in '94 (Common, Organized Konfusion, Beatnuts, Artifacts....I was road managing Org. Konf....believe me artists want to eat good just like the rest of us. The road is harder but at least cats can look at themselves in the mirror and be proud of their work. Just concentrate on connecting with the marketplace.
Now I'm done with this discussion. Back to work.

Label guy, you seem like your torn between the bullshit of the industry, and being a fan of good hip-hop. But you seem like you have good enough intentions.

Now about your Redman analogy:

Don't you agree that the game has changed significantly since "Whut, the Album"? Because of consolidation of radio, the influence of consultants, isn't it alot easier for rap artists to get nationwide airplay (ie hits). What was your formula again? one hit=gold. Now since you have the benefit of pulling up soundscan and probably Billboard archives, can you tell me if Redman has ever had a song that hit close to Top 40 on the Billboard charts, like "The Light" did? Redman went platinum in a time when "Hip-Hop radio" had matured to the point where it could help truly send an artist to that level.

Now about Mos Def, once again you add credence to my point. Number one, he defied your rule, no hit=gold. Okay, so Common sold about 100K more, which is significant, but don't you think all those spins on radio and BET should have equated to more?

You never addressed the wackness of the Geto Heaven remix, so I'm assuming that you agree.

You also never addressed whether or not ?uestlove was happy with the effort MCA put forth in promoting TFA, maybe coolquest himself can address that.

But in the grand scheme of things, I'm glad the project did what it did, 'cause now the brother can live a little, and we can look forward to another album.

Keep doing your job brother!!!

Because of

only if it has a certain hook/sound that connects with the marketplace. stations lately determine how long they bang something based more on requests, callout research, consumer feedback.

yeah, so did Pharoahe Monch & MOP - both had hits and both didn't get a plaque. Black Rob had a big-ass hit and went platinum. There are of course exceptions to the rule which I always stated when I first put my theory out there. Most of the data supports my theory though so my batting average is should be kinda high.

31. "you're not in the industry"
In response to Reply # 18

>For real 670,000 is a big
>disappointment.

You're not in the industry, are you?

Name 15 hip-hop albums that sold 670,000 units in 2000.

Do you have any idea how many hip-hop albums were released in 2000?

Do you realize that LWFC sold far more than any previous Common album?

So, how on earth was it a disappointment, being by far the best selling album of his career?

> Think Jill Scott's
>joint went platinum without the
>benefit of a single that
>did as well as "The
>Light".

Wrong. I heard Jill Scott on the radio MUCH more than Common. Did Com perform at The Grammies? Jill did (with Moby, right?). Is Common going on an arena tour with Sting? Jill is. Did I not see "Gettin In The Way" every 30 minutes on MTV2 (and that is NOT an exagerration).

> MCA dropped the
>ball by waiting too long
>to follow up "The Light"
>with another single

blah.

Do you realize how many hip-hop projects don't even see the release of a second single? Besides, radio is notoriously closed right now. It takes a lot to get them to add the first single, let alone the second single.

Again, you aren't in the industry, are you?

> and then
>releasing that bullshit, happy ass
>GETO Heaven Re-mix featuring Macy
>Gray. Obviously that was
>an attempt to appeal to
>the MTV crossover audience, but
>the heads, and radio didn't
>give a damn about it.

Well, this is a tricky business. Like I said, radio playlists aren't known for their flexibility, particularly urban radio.

>Going gold means nothing these days,

You really aren't in the industry.

>Comm went gold off the
>strength of "The Light", period,
>MCA should have came with
>the fire after that.

And the record label you work for is...?

>Bottomline, Com should have been platinum.

Besides Xzibit, I can't think of a hip-hop artist that had previous albums not even go gold, then hit platinum mid-career. And that's only because Dre scooped up Xzibit (giving him the mainstream seal of approval). Rapping with Snoop on a radio hit, sure didn't hurt (B Please).

>But him going gold simply
>means that he probably won't
>get dropped from the label,
>and we can expect another
>album in the near future.

You know how many people repeatedly do not go gold who are still signed? Beatnuts come to mind immediately.

> Don't expect platinum though,
>judging by the success (or
>lack thereof) of "Things Fall
>Apart", it's obvious that MCA
>has no clue how to
>promote progressive hip-hop.

After giving Com and The Roots' their first gold albums, I have to violently disagree with you.

Who DOES know how to promote progressive hip-hop? Talib Kweli and Pharoah aren't gold yet, are you cursing the name of Rawkus?

You're right, I'm not in the industry, and glad for that. But don't try to front like I'm not makin' valid points. No one has addressed the fact that the GETO Heaven re-mix was THE WACK. I am fully aware that about 2% of all albums released account for half of all album sales. All the Jill Scott stuff you alluded to happened after she went platinum (Sting Tour, Grammys etc.). Now do your homework, Mr. Industry, check the billboard charts to see if anny of Jill's singles have done as well as "The Light" (#43 pop charts, Top 10 R&B Charts).

i'll address it, it wasn't wack. it was quite good.......just cause u don't like it means nothing to the 670,000 people that bought the album WITHOUT the remix....remix means a different version of the original.

I am

I don't know about where you guys are, but The Light remix with E. Badu is the hit in the mellow club atmosphere in the Chi. I think MCA should have brought that out. Coupled with the controversy over their romance, it may have helped LWFC reach that platinum plaque. Just a thought...

Jill had 2 singles in the top 50 pop charts(Gettin In The Way and A Long Walk) and gets way more radio airplay than Common. And she had airplay before the Grammys, was platinum before the Sting Tour, so your point is not backed up.

In response to Reply # 50

did I forget to state the obvious?

the R&B market and the hip-hop market are apples and oranges.

comparing Jill Scott to Common in a marketing context is like...comparing D'angelo to The Roots...hip-hop records and R&B records are marketed differently...

ps: Use your billboard research skills to find out how many spins Jill got for "Gettin In The Way" and "The Long Walk" compared with "The Light" and "Geto Heaven (rmx)". Therein lies your answer.

pps: The rotation Jill got on MTV2 came BEFORE her platinum status, thank you very much. WELL before.

Even though I preferred NO I.D.'s production over Jay Dee's, I think with the success that Common had on LWFC, he's not going to go backwards and I can do nothing but respect that. And I seriously feel that One Day should have gone gold. Why "Retrospect For Life" didn't blow him up just boggles the fuck outta my mind. The next choices for singles were mistakes I believe. "Remindin' Me of Sef" kinda alienated me at first. And even though I loved Hungry and Invocation, whoever decided that should be the last video from the CD made a very huge mistake. I think a stolen Moments video combining the 3 parts woul have been dope. Even G.O.D. or All Night Long would have made better choices.

DAY IN THE SUN

I’m tired of havin’ to drag myself up outta bed before I’m fully rested
Born in slums that were infested, everyday I’m bein’ tested
The bullshit’s the world’s feedin’ me is not easily digested
They tell me to keep hope alive, but I’m not really interested
‘Cuz I’m tired of watchin’ all my dreams go up in smoke
I’m tired of breakin’ my back every day, and still bein’ broke
Life’s a fuckin’ joke, I’m stuck between a rock and a hard place
Tryin’ to live by the ways of the world, and still remain in God’s grace
The world’s a dark place, I was told that the sun would shine forever
But it’s like me and my wife never get a chance to spend any time together
And it’s tearin’ apart my heart, I’m tryin’ to chart my life’s timetable
But it’s a rare occasion when I’m able to keep my mind stable
It’s like my spirit can’t be free, if I abide by all these policies
I came from poverty, so I’ve always dreamed of a life of a better quality
But I’ll probably end up getting’ stabbed in the back wit’ a sharp dagger
I know the future’s there, but it can’t be seen like dark matter
So why, does it always feel
Like my chances for success ain’t real
This cold world sends multiple chills, down my spine
These negative thoughts have bounced around my mind, like a thousand times
My legs about to give out tryin’ to live out my final fantasy
How can it be, that I’m half the man that I never got a chance to be
Financially, dollars ain’t makin’ no sense, it’s intense
As the world clashes, my soul burns down to ashes like incense
I’m tryin’ to leave my imprints on the face of the earth
But wit’ all the strife, it feels like my life was wasted at birth
Face in the dirt, got me thinkin’, why the fuck do I even bother
Don’t know how I learned to be a man, ‘cuz I ain’t never had a father
And it gets harder, tryin’ to go on every day wit’ the stress
They tell me to lay them thoughts to rest, becuz they say I’ve been blessed
My heart’s meltin’ away in my chest, and occasionally, I’ll notice a gray hair
It’s like the world is trapped in darkness, and I really don’t wanna stay there
But it’s kinda hard to win at the game of life, if you play fair
And I really can’t explain it to my family, even though I know that they care
The light’s at the end of the tunnel, I’m tryin’ to make my way there
The light’s a long fuckin’ way from me, but I’m tryin’ to make my way there

As I
Look on my life
I sure do hope in time
That I’ll have my day
In the sun

All Nite long was the shit and would have been a hit single fo sho. I was in high school when that came out and I swear to you iused to listen to that song all day! Maybe I was wack, but a shortened version with Badu in the vide would have made that man more than gold. He'd have pushed platinum. That song would have rocked in the club during the middle of a nice r and b set. His label dropped the ball on that.
